Jon Reyes wins PC nomination for St. Norbert Jon Reyes will be campaigning in south Winnipeg next spring as the PC candidate for St. Norbert. Former Manitoba Filipino Business Council president captured the Progressive Conservative nomination for St. Norbert earlier this week at the PC nomination meeting at Southland Church in Fort Richmond. A roar of cheers and highfives erupted from family, friends and supporters at the meeting as Reyes' name was announced. Reyes won the nomination over lawyer, Philip Watts and educator, Deb May. In his nomination address, Reyes highlighted, "I have served all my life. Giving back to my family, my community, my province, and my country is in the foundation of who I am. It is in my culture, it is in how I was raised by my family, and it is how my wife and I live and teach our children."

Avida Towers Cloverleaf to transform Quezon City as Metro Manila’s growth center Avida Land Corporation, a subsidiary of Ayala Land Inc. (ALI), hopes to transform the Balintawak Cloverleaf district in Quezon City into the country’s newest business district. Strategically located at the crossroads of EDSA and A. Bonifacio Avenue, the 11-hectare property is bounded by access points for public transit such as the Balintawak LRT station and EDSA buses on one side; and jeeps, buses and shuttles along. A. Bonifacio Ave. The site is also very close to the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) which is the gateway to the booming Northern Luzon. In addition, the upcoming Skyway Stage 3 that is scheduled to be operational by mid 2017 will make travel to Makati a mere 20-minute drive. With a total investment of P25 billion, the developer, through a 10-year project, is building a cluster of residential, office and commercial developments on the prime Cloverleaf district. A landmark in urban development, the Avida Towers Cloverleaf features a new concept in the unit layout of its residences with its three tower developments offering right sized units. The two-bedroom and three-bedroom units, which come at 52 sqm and 61 sqm, respectively, were designed for the needs of newlyweds and growing families. The threebedroom units were introduced to address the need for personal space. According to Avida Land Corporate Planning Group head Raquel S. Cruz, the units were carefully designed to provide each
family member his/her personal space within the unit. The first tower will have 28 residential levels plus six commercial establishments on the ground floor. Unit prices start at 2.2 million for a studio and goes up to P6.3 million for a three-BR unit. Phase 1 of the project is planned for the first five years. Amenities: • Clubhouse with function hall • Serenity gardens and landscaped spaces within the development • New Ayala Mall complex • 250-bed Qualimed Hospital • Six commercial establishments on the ground floor of the condo and two Alveo and three Avida towers • The swimming pool • Indoor gym and children’s playground will be developed along with the second and third towers. The target market are the Chinese community and residents of Quezon City and Camanava (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela) who would like to upgrade to new homes, said Caren Rose R. Rosales, business area head for business developments for Avida Land. Units will begin turnover by the fourth quarter of 2019. Cruz added that Avida Towers Cloverleaf’s advantage over other residential condominium in the area is the opportunity to enjoy a bigger lifestyle
full of convenience and the projected increase in property value at a faster rate over time. Phase 2 follows suit within the next five years. It includes construction of a mix of retail office and residential towers and another seven buildings. Phase 2 will be oriented towards the side of EDSA and will be linked to Phase 1 by a pedestrian promenade featuring landscaped greenery. Architect Jonathan M. Fabricante, Avida IDG head, said the three towers will be laid out in such a way that there will be ample distance and space between the towers.

Rizal on Reform and Revolution (part 3 of 4)
W
by Levy Abad
hat were the tendencies that arose out of Jose Rizal's ideas? The reform movement that he led exposed the abuses committed during the Spanish colonial and feudal rule. Aside from writing novels, he was also a part of the publications La Solidaridad and La Liga Filipina. This clearly proved Rizal’s involvement in the reform movement. According to Chris Antonette Piedad-Pugay, in his work “Jose Rizal and the Revolution: Revisiting Renato Constantino’s 'Veneration Without Understanding'": “Another example of Rizal’s reformism can be found in his manifesto where he emphasized the necessity of education in the achievement of liberties. He also believed that reforms, to be fruitful, must come from above; and that those that come from below are shaky, irregular, and uncertain. Rizal’s weakness was his failure to
fully trust his people. His idea that change should come from above is the clearest proof that he is kind of detached from what is happening on the ground. He repudiated the revolution because he thought that reforms, to be successful, should come from above.” Notwithstanding these weaknesses, the reform movement became the spark that started the prairie fire. The problem with freedom is that, once the people get a taste of it, it develops its own dynamics and grows beyond the control of the regime. It has a life of its own. So, when the call for revolt was made, the masses embraced it. If Rizal cautioned the members of the reform movement not to engage in armed revolt, ordinary people like Andres Bonifacio who bore the full weight of the feudal rule of Spain would have reacted in a different way, the revolutionary way. The more intense the experience of oppression,

And he said, 'No more fooling around, no more being a celebrity. I'm a fighter and I'm going to work hard and stay in the gym and you will see the best Nonito Donaire you've ever seen,'" Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said. fueled the people to revolt. We must remember that even revolutionaries are human beings, and utopian measuring sticks are useless. Even saints are sinners. Too often, leaders and scholars try to put a framework that will determine when the revolution starts and when they think it should end. The reality is that the implication, effects, or the success and betrayal of the Revolution of 1896 can still be seen and felt up to now. Reflecting on the writings of Renato Constantino, Rizal’s tendency was the natural offshoot of his status in society since he belonged to the Ilustrado (erudite, learned). The Ilustrados were people whom the Spanish colonial authorities trusted to be their administrators over vast tracts of land or encomiendas. Rizal's family was well-off. This afforded Jose Rizal and many of his siblings good education, attending the best schools like Letran, UST, and Ateneo. In fact, his family was able to send him abroad to study. The tendency of this class of people was to be cautious and weary of social movements as they might cause instability. They tended to veer towards reformism because they had a lot to lose in the process, although there were a few who transcended their economic background and embraced the struggle of the people wholeheartedly. I would like to think that Jose Rizal was one of them. On the other hand, ordinary people like Andres Bonifacio joined the armed revolt to end their oppression because they got nothing to lose but their bondage. [to be concluded in the next issue]
the more the revolutionary tendency intensifies. To substantiate this, I would like to quote from a book by Renato Constantino, entitled A Past Revisited, (page 159): “At first, the Liga was quite active. Bonifacio, in particular, exerted great effort to organize chapters in various districts of Manila. A few months later, however, the Supreme Council of the Liga dissolved the Society. The reformist leaders found out that most of the popular councils which Bonifacio had organized were no longer willing to send funds to the Madrid propagandists (assimilationists) because they, like Bonifacio, had become convinced that peaceful agitation for reforms was futile. Afraid that the more radical rank and file members might capture the organization and be unwilling to involve themselves in an enterprise which would surely invite reprisals from the authorities, the leaders of the Liga opted for dissolution. The Liga membership split into two groups: the conservatives formed the Cuerpo de Compromisarios, which pledged continued support for La Solidaridad; while the radicals led by Bonifacio devoted themselves to a new and secret society, the Katipunan, which Bonifacio organized on the very day that Rizal was deported to Dapitan.” It is impossible to go back in time and measure the sincerity of those who joined the revolution. Some authors claim that the reason Rizal distanced himself with the initiative was because of the insincerity of some leaders. Unarguably, revolution was able to drive out the Spaniards. Purity of heart was good but immaterial. Oppression was what

The PBA was originally scheduled to launch its latest season last October 18 at Amart Araneta Coliseum but was cancelled due to typhoon Lando. And together with all the rapid technological changes, the PBA has also managed to grow its popularity due in large to the loyal following of its fans,” Narvasa added. The Gilas Pilipinas team was honored at center court for winning the silver medal in the 2015 FIBA Championship which was held in China. The 12 teams paraded with their respective muses with Talk ‘N Text, Barako Bull and San Miguel Beer among the crowd favorites. strengthened and diversified through cooperative activities.” The Secretary added that, as both maritime nations with rapidly developing economies, the future of Philippines and Viet Nam is closely linked and it is natural that the bilateral relations of both countries should strengthen and intensify. The Philippines and Viet Nam are in the process of finalizing a strategic partnership, which was agreed upon by both President Benigno S. Aquino III and Viet Nam President Tan Sang in 2014 during a meeting on the sidelines of the 26th APEC Summit. This strategic partnership is being established with a view to elevating the level and intensity of bilateral exchanges between the two countries. The Ministerial Meeting was preceded by a Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) held on September 14, in Hanoi, Viet Nam.

The Tenors Melted Hearts at MTS Centre, Sept. 18
T
he Tenors concert that was held at MTS Centre on September 18, 2015, was a mix of upbeatness, playfulness, seriousness, nostalgia, and melancholy. The overall theme was about the celebration of the Tenor members' relationship with their respective parents. The show also highlighted not only the quartet's vocal prowess but also their proficiency with the musical instruments that each of them could play--piano, guitar, mandola, and bass, among a few more. Yes, unlike other vocal groups, The Tenors play musical instruments, and their rendition is oozing with passion and clarity. But they also had their backing band that made the entire presentation so full and textured. Of their entire setlist for the show, "My Father's Son" was the one that really made me and many
of the audience members swoon and sing along to the chorus, obviously because many could well relate with the song's lyrics. Anyone who has been close to his parents and who is doting of his own son would certainly fell for that particular song. The other songs on the setlist included "I Remember You"; "Angels Calling"; "Granada"; a cover of Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful," which they dedicated to their mothers; "Lead with Your Heart"; "Forever Young"; "Home I'll Be"; "Adagio"; and a take on "Something" by The Beatles. Perhaps the best spiel heard from the guys during the show was, "We're Mama's [and Papa's] boys," uttering this usually derogatory quip with pride and love. Yes, many people feel embarrassed in expressing their

love for their parents or, in reverse, many children feel embarrassed when their parents express their love for them in public. Not me. What's wrong with that anyway? Whenever I see parents or children who feel shame in such expression of parental and filial love, I wonder what went wrong in their relationship with each other. I've always believe that parents' love for their children and the children's love for their parents is a beautiful emotion that should be celebrated and not to be downplayed or derogated. Having said that, "My Father's Son," from The Tenors' latest, fourth studio album (Under One Sky, 2015) may be regarded as the highlight of the show. It surely made many eyes there at the concert teary and noses runny. The Tenors are a Canadian vocal quartet comprised currently by Remigio Pereira, Victor Micallef, Fraser Walters, and Clifton Murray. The concept for the vocal group was formed in 2004; however, the eventual core of the group got to release their first album in 2008. To date, The Tenors have four studio albums to their credit: The Canadian Tenors (2008), The Perfect Gift (2009), Lead with Your Heart (2012), and Under One Sky (2015).

Double whammy hits China
L
ittle did China realize that her attempt to take over the South China Sea (SCS) would be met with resistance from the United States as well as the Permanent Court of Arbitration. And with the speed it took to accomplish the one-two punch against the rising superpower in Asia-Pacific in a matter of two days, it left China with few options, none of which – except total withdrawal -- she’d win without drawing massive indignation or backlash from the world community. It all began on October 27, 2015, when the United States sent the USS Lassen, a guided missile destroyer, to within 12 miles of the Subi Reef and Mischief Reef in the Spratly archipelago. The passage of the U.S. warship through waters that China claims as her territory drew protests from the Chinese government who threatened retaliatory actions
against the U.S. for violating China’s sovereignty. Two days later, on October 29, the Permanent Court of Arbitration issued its first ruling on the arbitration case filed by the Philippines against China over the disputed areas in the South China Sea. The fivemember arbitration tribunal, which is based at The Hague, Netherlands, unanimously ruled that it has jurisdiction to hear the Philippines’ territorial claims filed against China. The tribunal rejected China’s claim that the disputes were about its territorial sovereignty. China claims “indisputable sovereignty” over a region that comprises about 85% of the entire South China Sea. She has boycotted the proceedings insisting that the arbitral tribunal doesn’t have jurisdiction or authority to hear the case. But the tribunal ruled that it has the authority to hear seven of the Philippines’

submissions under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The tribunal also made it clear that China’s decision not to participate in the arbitration “did not deprive the tribunal of jurisdiction.” The U.S. welcomed the decision of the arbitral tribunal. A U.S. defense official said, “This demonstrates the relevance of international law to the territorial conflicts in the South China Sea,” then added, “It demonstrates that sovereign claims are not necessarily indisputable and it shows that judging issues like this on the basis of international law and international practice are a viable way of, at a minimum, managing territorial conflicts if not resolving them.” Core interest But as China had repeatedly expressed – and threatened – in the past, she is not going to abide by a decision that would contradict with China’s claim that the South China Sea is “an area of ‘core interest’ that is non-negotiable.” But would China go to war to protect her sovereignty over the SCS? Based on her pronounced stand on the issue, she will. But the $64,000 question is: Would she? And that brings to fore the ultimate question: What is the value of “ownership” of the South China Sea to China and why is it important that she has exclusive right over it? To answer this question, one has to recall China’s dream of becoming the dominant power in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. In an article, “China to take Second Island Chain by 2020,” published in the Want China Times on June 27, 2013, Admiral Liu Huaqing, the mastermind of China’s modern naval strategy, was quoted as saying in 1982 that it would be necessary for China to control the First and Second Island Chains by 2010 and 2020, respectively. “The PLA Navy must be ready to challenge
US domination over the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean in 2040. If China is able to dominate the Second Island Chain seven years from now, the East China Sea will become the backyard of the PLA Navy,” he said. Artificial islands The following year, 2014, China started building artificial islands around seven reefs and shoals in the Spratly archipelago. In three of these man-made islands, China built defense fortifications, troop garrisons, runways that could accommodate China’s biggest bombers, and deep-water harbors where her warships could dock. Although she denied militarizing these artificial islands, satellite photos clearly show that the structures built on them are for military use. President Barack Obama’s go-signal to the U.S. Navy to patrol the waters within 12 miles of the artificial islands was hailed by three of America’s staunchest allies, Japan, Australia, and particularly the Philippines, which is within 200 miles from these “unsinkable aircraft carriers,” as a U.S. senior naval officer described them. But many are of the opinion that Obama’s order was “too little, too late” because it would be hard to convince China to dismantle or abandon the artificial islands. China would never abandon them… unless the U.S. would go to war against her. But that will not happen. Not now. There is just so much to lose by both countries to go to war over these islands. Chinese nationalism But China has to react to the U.S.’s “infringement” of her sovereign rights. However, one needs to know that China is going through an economic downturn, falling stock values, rising unemployment, declining exports, shrinking consumer spending, and an increasingly corrupt military and bureaucracy. The Chinese people are edgy and
November 5-20, 2015
Chinese President Xi Jinping seems to blame the U.S. and Japan for all the country’s ills. It did not then come as a surprise that anti-American and anti-Japanese sentiments are running high among the Chinese people. And these are all Xi needs to rally the people to his side. In other words, Xi could increase his anti-American rhetoric without really going to war. He knows that war with the U.S. at this time would be devastating to China. Simply put, China doesn’t have the capability to defeat the U.S. in a naval battle or crush her with nuclear power. So, what is China going to do to save face? An easy one would be to send a flotilla to patrol the waters around those artificial islands and confront U.S. warships that enter her territory. And what would the U.S. warships do? While the two navies would be in a standoff situation, I don't think that either side would start a battle. However, unintended incidents could happen that could lead to skirmish, which could bring the two countries closer to war. Meanwhile, China could start deploying military aircraft and warships to the militarized artificial islands as well as building more artificial islands, which she threatened to do as a consequence of the American “intrusion.” What would Obama do then? Is he going to attack or withdraw his naval forces? Or is he going to negotiate a compromise, one of which is to demilitarize the artificial islands and put them under the United Nations’ control, but will remain as the exclusive economic zones of the rightful countries as mandated by UNCLOS. It would be a fair and equitable solution but it would be a painful pill for China to swallow. But what else could China do when a double whammy hits her?

AlDub’s record-breaking tweets now official
A
new Twitter record generated by the phenomenal tandem of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, also known as “Yaya Dub,” has been officially recognized by Twitter Asia Pacific. The record-breaking event showed that 41 million tweets were posted using the hashtag #ALDubEBTamangPanahon from October 23 to October 25 during the Saturday event that featured a sold-out 55,000 seater Philippine Arena. The record eclipsed the 35.6 million tweets sent during the Brazil vs. Germany World Cup semi-final last July 8, 2014 Twitter’s Vice President of Media, Asia Pacific and Middle East Rishi Jaitly said in a statement that they are glad that Twitter and Periscope have become a part of the historic AlDub phenomenon. For her part, TAPE Inc. Senior Vice President Jenny Ferre said that Twitter has given the show a community where the team behind the show and the viewers and followers can interact. Meanwhile, popular comedian Vice Ganda has accepted defeat to rival noontime show “Eat Bulaga” during the sixth anniversary show of “It’s Showtime” aired over ABS-CBN on Saturday. He also reminded the fans of “Showtime” and “Bulaga” not to fight with one another on social media. Vice Ganda also said that “Showtime” would not be cancelled as earlier reported as he reacted to rumors that the show would be cancelled in December 2015.

Ernesto Herrera – the Apolinario Mabini of our generation
A
n emotional tribute was paid by the former colleagues of the late Ernesto “Boy” Herrera who passed away on October 29 due to cardiac arrest. Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto was holding back tears as he read his eulogy during a necrological service which took place this
Wednesday- “An extraordinary man who lived in extraordinary times, he was my seatmate for six years in the 9th and 10th Congress. Herrera of Cebu and Bohol, of the Senate, of labor, the Mabini of our generation. In the possession of power and honor, he did not speak of humility, he was simply humble.”
Former Senator Ernoesto Maceda also referred to Herrera as a modern Mabini- “I like to say to Boy, we are of course suffering a great feeling of loss like your family and we only hope that as the modern Apolinario Mabini, there will be many others to follow in your footsteps. Rest well, Boy
Herrera, rest in peace. Thank you again and goodbye,” Former Senator Joey Lina also paralleled Herrera to Mabini“Just like the sublime paralytic, Apolinario Mabini, Senator Herrera used his intellectual prowess to serve the interest of our country.” Meanwhile, Senator Sonny Angara delivered the eulogy of
his father, former Senator Edgardo Angara- “Boy Herrera’s drive and enthusiasm was undiminished by his physical handicap since he contracted polio in his youth. He achieved far more than his ablebodied counterparts and he lived a life of singular purpose. He remains an inspiration to us all.”

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos
Homecoming S tarting the season with their first four games on the road, the Winnipeg Jets rose to the occasion winning three of the four. The Jets looked to continue their early success with the next six games back home at the friendly confines of the MTS Centre. With higher expectations, the Jets started off on the right foot at home and treated their fan base with a triumphant home opener. The Jets home opener was a thrilling one taking on the young and exciting Calgary Flames. Flames forward Mikael Backlund opened the scoring in the first period to give his team a 1-0 lead. After a quiet opening period, the Jets top line started to click. Bryan Little redirected a pass from Blake Wheeler to tie the game 1-1. The game seemed to be headed to overtime but Dustin Byfuglien gave the fans something to cheer about. With 1:28 left in the game, Byfuglien managed to stay onside and make a move around Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman and threw the puck on net beating Karri Ramo. Blake Wheeler would add an empty netter to give the Jets a 3-1 victory. After the game, Little talked about the dynamics Byfuglien brings each night. “He’s so strong on the puck, and he has a nice pair of hands with a great shot, too." Little said. "When he wants to take the puck to the net, there aren’t many guys in the league that can stop him.” The St. Louis Blues came to town to reignite their rivalry with the Jets. After both teams
exchanged a pair of goals in the second period, Vladimir Tarasenko scored his second of the game midway through the third period to give the Blues the lead. The Blues would add an empty netter for a 4-2 win. Mathieu Perreault and Drew Stafford found the scoresheet for the Jets. It was an Ondrej that was the overtime hero but this time it wasn't Pavelec. Lightning forward Ondrej Palat scored the winner in overtime to give Tampa a 4-3 victory over the Jets. Cedric Paquette powered the Bolts with a goal and an assist. Blake Wheeler scored shorthanded to force the game to overtime after a Ben Bishop miscue behind the net. Nikolaj Ehlers and Drew Stafford also tallied in a losing effort. It was pretty fitting that in a wild game, the Minnesota Wild would be part of it. Just 10 seconds in, Jason Zucker put the Wild up 1-0 but it was all
Winnipeg after that. The Jets scored the next five goals and held off a late Minnesota rally to win 5-4. Drew Stafford scored twice in the second period and Michael Hutchinson stopped 26 shots. The Los Angeles Kings paid a royal visit to Winnipeg and extended their winning streak to five games at the expense of the Jets. Milan Lucic broke a 1-1 tie late in the third period and the Kings scored two empty net goals for a 4-1 win. Ehlers scored the lone Jets goal. The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks closed up the six game homestand for Winnipeg. Hutchinson was spectacular in net for Winnipeg stopping 45 shots downing the Hawks 3-1. Andre Ladd scored his third of the year that proved to be the game winner. The Jets travelled to Columbus to suit up against the Blue Jackets. In a tightly played contest, Winnipeg escaped with a 3-2 victory. Blake Wheeler added a goal and an assist and Andrew Copp scored his first career NHL goal.
One night later, the Jets found themselves against the best team in the NHL. Starting their backup goalie Mike Condon, the Canadiens dominated a flat Jets squad 5-1. Tomas Fleischmann led the charge for the Habs with two goals and an assist with

Condon stopping 18 shots. Chris Thorburn scored late in the third period for Winnipeg. The Jets (7-4-1) will close off their road trip with a pair of games in Ontario taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs followed by the Ottawa Senators.

Carving for a Cause 2015: Air Jordan Jumpman Pumpkin supporting Kidsport Manitoba
A
s I walked into Kildonan Place for this year's Carving for a Cause charity caring event, I had no idea what I was going to do. I knew that I wanted it to be sports related because Kidsport Manitoba was my charity of choice again for this year's competition. It wasn't until I was walking through the aisles at Dollarama when I saw a mini basketball hoop set
when the proverbial light bulb came on! I was originally going to carve the pumpkin like a basketball and after a few Google image searches, I decided I was going to carve the iconic Air Jordan Jumpman design, well, a reasonable carved copy. The annual Carving for a Cause media charity event is hosted annually by the good folks at Kildonan Place Shopping

Centre. Every team gets one hour to carve a pumpkin. While most teams carve pumpkins, others take the competition in another direction by decorating their pumpkins, which is also awesome. My Air Jordan Jumpman Pumpkin was selected by the judges as the Most Creative Pumpkin Design. I also won the Most Creative Pumpkin Design award last year and I was pretty stoked to have won the award back-to-back, or as they say, REPEAT! I'm not making promises for a three-peat next year. Congratulations to JD Francis and Jordan Knight from ENERGY 106FM for winning the Facebook Likes voting and won an additional $500 for their charity, North Point Douglas Women's Centre.
It’s all about the glitter and the Jordan Jumpman pumpkin!
