Three More New Albums before 2016 Ends by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
T
he year is close to the end, but the music world continues to produce so many new albums from perhaps any genre, and from both contemporary and classic artists. Here are newly released albums from three classic and iconic artists that originated from the fertile ’80s Pop music scene. Modern English – Take Me to the Trees Doubtlessly, the release of the much-awaited eighth album of the legendary and seminal PostPunk / New Wave band Modern English is the proper epitome of
many music analysts’ favorite description: “A return to original form.” Although the band’s name, Modern English, may have not become a household name, its classic single “I Melt with You,” nonetheless, has become one of the most familiar New Wave / Indie Pop songs for the last 30 years. Take Me to the Trees is a completion of a stylistic circle, for it certainly docks back onto the raw, rustic, Gothic, sinister, and tubular bass–driven sound of the English band’s debut album, 1981’s Mesh & Lace. all, the current Modern English features four of its five founding members: Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitars), Mick Conroy (bass), and Stephen Walker (keyboards). Recommended songs include “Trees,” “Moonbeam,” “Sweet Revenge,” “Come Out of Your Hole,” and “Flood of Light.” Rick Astley – 50 Catapulted to popularity in the ’80s Pop music scene in 1987 via his solid debut effort, the English singer Rick Astley has

become a music icon in his own right. He was able to churn out a string of successful singles culled especially from his ’80s-released albums: “ N e v e r Gonna Give You Up,” “Whenever You Need Somebody,” “ To g e t h e r Forever,” “It Would Take a Strong Man,” “She Wants to Dance with Me,” “Take Me to Your Heart,” and “Hold Me in Your Arms.” To date, Astley has seven studio albums to his credit, from 1987’s Whenever You Need Somebody to the latest, seventh offering. Titled 50, Astley's new album is a collection of fine ballads (“Angels on My Side,” “Wish Away,” “Let It Be Tonight”), upbeat dance-floor stompers (“God Says,” “I Like the Sun,” “Pray with Me”), and a few Lounge Pop head swayers (“This Old House” and “Pieces”). Roxette – Good Karma The 30 years’ spanning career of the Swedish duo Roxette has produced 10 studio albums, from the humble beginnings of 1986’s Pearls of Passion to 2016’s relatively return-to-form sound of Good Karma. The commercial glory of Roxette shone the brightest in the late ’80s on through the early ’90s, when their second and third albums were released, spawning hit singles such as the Heart-inspired balladry of “Listen to Your Heart” and “Dangerous” and the upbeat, slick, sunny Pop of “The Look,” “Joyride,” and “How Do You Do?” as well as the highly successful non-album single “It Must Have Been Love.” Roxette’s latest offering combines both the classic and the modern aspects of the duo’s music, blending nostalgia and anticipation—the perfect album to celebrate Roxette’s 30th anniversary in the music industry. So, kudos to Roxette’s Marie Fredriksson (lead vocalist) and Per Gessle (vocalist/guitarist) for a worthy new album and for their musical partnership’s anniversary. Recommended songs include “This One,” “Some Other Summer,” and “April Clouds.” Final Note Those are just additional three new albums released this year. If you’re really a music enthusiasts, then you should not be complaining that there’s no more good music to be had nowadays—because there’s so much new great music out there—in fact, from any given place or decade. All one needs, really, is the initiative to look for the kind of music one loves. And one will certainly always find so much.

Duterte’s flip-flop diplomacy
W
hen President Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte announced his “separation” from the United States during his state visit to China, it shook the world. Not that it would have changed the balance of power in the IndoAsia-Pacific region, but it was because of the abrupt – “strange,” I might say – way of which it was announced. But what is surreally baffling is his retraction the next day. Is it a case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde syndrome or it’s just plain grandstanding? One personality wants to maintain the status quo on U.S.Philippine relations while the other personality wants to sever
all ties with the U.S. and align with the “ideological flow” of China and Russia. And in a moment of Napoleonic illusion, he saw himself as part of an alliance – China, Philippines, and Russia -- against the world! Why didn’t he include North Korea? The problem is: Duterte (also known as Du30) seems to live in his own little world totally detached from the geopolitical realities that dictate how nations – and their leaders -- interact with one another. He seems to think of the Philippines as an island onto itself that can provide security for her people without help from anybody. And, worst, dismantling the Philippines’ military ties

with the U.S. would strip the Philippines of the capability to defend her sovereignty and territorial integrity. Digong’s brand of geopolitics Evidently, Duterte’s brand of geopolitics digresses from established norms and conventions in international relations. His handling of the Philippines’ West Philippine Sea/South China Sea claims vis-à-vis the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s (PCA) ruling, which is overwhelmingly favorable to the Philippines, has bungled the country’s strong case against China. Had Duterte stayed on course in pursuing the Philippines’ claims, the other claimant-countries could have used the PCA ruling to pursue their own maritime claims against China. It’s interesting to note that with all the geopolitical mishaps and diplomatic faux pas that Duterte did, he had the temerity to claim that he was a Foreign Service graduate. At a press conference last October 19 during his state visit to China, Filipino journalist Ellen Tordesillas quoted him in her column as saying: “Now that I am the President, by the grace of God, I read a lot; I’m a lawyer and I studied geopolitics and all, and also I am a graduate of the Foreign Service so I get to know how to balance this contending (forces).” But what Digong did was break one of the rules of geopolitics, which is: “Geopolitics is not a zerosum game.” Indeed, in today’s globalized economy, the object of geopolitics is to arrive at a winwin situation where players need to compromise. Gone are the days when nations go to war to settle territorial disputes. The Cold War is over and we are now living in a multipolar world order where all nations are interdependent with one another. The world is shrinking too; and everybody is just a “click” away. Digong’s attempted maneuver to “separate” from the U.S. -- militarily and economically -- and threatened to form an alliance with China and Russia, did not only fail to materialize but it also made a “village clown” of himself. And while he made all these geopolitical and diplomatic boo-boos, his Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. and Defense

Secretary Delfin Lorenzana had the thankless job of straightening out the knots and kinks of his “independent foreign policy,” which has been causing a lot of embarrassment for him. It’s all drama With all the “Du30 drama” he staged in Beijing, Duterte was able to attract $24 billion in investments and loans from China. It must have made Chinese President Xi Jinping feel triumphant that the Philippines -- under Duterte’s leadership – is now in his pocket, totally detached from the U.S. And it would certainly have given him a firm grip on the vast South China Sea. Wrong! The day Digong returned to the Philippines, he clarified that he’s not cutting ties with the U.S. He said he was just pursuing a “separation of foreign policy” from the U.S., which was quite different in meaning and purpose to what he proclaimed in China, which was “separation from the U.S.” He said that he didn’t want it to affect local jobs in Americanowned companies in the Philippines and the large number of Filipinos in the U.S. He also said that it is in the best interest of the Philippines to maintain diplomatic relations with the U.S. Volte face An article on the Nikkei Asian Review titled, “Duterte’s ‘about-face’ unsettles Xi,” published last October 28, talked about Duterte’s volte face [an act of turning around so as to face in the opposite direction] upon his return to the Philippines. The report said: “The Internet was not slow to react to Duterte's volte face, and the word ‘fraud’ has gone viral. One social media post read, ‘Duterte changed his face as soon as he returned to the Philippines after securing money from China.’ “The reference was to the traditional Chinese art of ‘face changing,’ where performers go from one character to the next by swapping masks in a Beijing opera or during a banquet. Many feel it was not the mask that was changed so much as a complete change of heart. “Other online posts put it in less uncertain terms, ‘China got dumped. China was deceived,’ read one. Another said, ‘It is a divorce in disguise [from the U.S.]
November 5-20, 2016
for the sake of borrowing [from China]. That's not uncommon in China.’ ” Damage control It must have occurred to Duterte that he didn’t have to let go of the U.S. now that he had secured a huge economic package from China. During his subsequent visit to Japan following the China trip, he appointed Philippine Star columnist Babe Romualdez as special envoy to the U.S., reportedly as part of a “rebooting” of relationship with the U.S. The Philippine Star report said: “Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. informed Romualdez of his appointment yesterday at the Imperial Tower Hotel in Tokyo, on the sidelines of Duterte’s threeday official visit. “ ‘We are trying on how we can work with the changes… especially with the upcoming elections in the US so we will see how we can (establish)… let’s call it as rebooting our relationship with the US,’ said a member of the President’s official delegation here. “ ‘We’d like to communicate the message of how we will have a rebooting of our relationship,’ the official, who declined to be named, added. ‘Yes, of course we will continue our relationship with the US.’ “As special envoy, Romualdez’s ‘special mission’ is to put back on track Philippine-US relations,” the report concluded, which begs the question: Can Romualdez fix the damage Digong made? Geopolitics is addition Now that Digong has his cake, he wants to eat it, too. But while a zero-sum game might produce intermediate success in the short term, just like what Digong did on his China visit; he should – nay, must! -- realize that in the long term, good geopolitics produces better results if it weren’t played as a zero-sum game. It reminds me of the late legendary political leader Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez whose mantra was “Politics is addition.” And so is Geopolitics. At the end of the day, Digong’s flip-flop diplomacy may have worked in his favor at this time, but he must be careful because it could boomerang the next time he flip-flops.

Canada will open the doors for 300,000 new permanent residents in 2017 To sustain economic growth and support its strained health care and pension systems...

reat news for those who are planning to come to Canada as permanent residents, hoping that by the end of next year, Canada's population will increase by another 300,000 new permanent residents, far from the recommendation by the Advisory Council on Economic Growth which stated that the annual immigration should be increased over a five-year period by 50 per cent, to 450,000 from 300,000. "That number is a conceivable number for same date in the future, but certainly not for 2017," said Immigration,

Refugees & Citizenship Minister John McCallum during the announcement of making the 2016 level of immigration would be at the same level for 2017. And the breakdown of the target number for 2017 gives the economic immigrants intake of 57.7%; and the family reunification, 28.%; and because of the Syrian refugee conflict, the government decided 13.3% for refugees; and humanitarian decisions get 1.2%. Accepting more skilled immigrants through express entry and the provincial nominee programs, the government takes priority to zero in in the economic immigrant category to generate more economic growth and to enhance a stronger bond in the social fabric of he various communities, as Kevin Lamoureux, MP, Winnipeg North Centre, and the Parliamentary Secretary to the government house leader as he postulated: "Immigrants not only fill jobs that would otherwise remains vacant and help to develop provincial economies, but they also contribute to the character and the social fabric of communities." And he added focusing on the success of the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program
that if it weren't for immigration thru the PNP, the population of Manitoba would have declined in the last decade. But from some quarters, increased immigration would be a burden for the Canadian government in terms of medical care, housing and security. And other MPs raised their voices that jobs in Canada are getting scarce specially in Alberta, as Alberta MP Tom Kmiec, PC, said;"Albertans get first crack at the job.". Other voices cited that there will be problems in the coming years if immigration becomes stagnant, leading to more problems because of the aging population and low birth rate, and that the increase of immigration will sustain economic growth and support its strained health care and pension systems. One official voiced his concern: "Who will pay for our pension plans?" More tax collections and pension plan supports are tied up with the 57.7% target of economic immigrants. The skilled workers are tax payers and the current pension payments support the current pension payment. Other voices are very disconcerting as you view some comments of Canadians who are against the increase on the intake of new immigrants. One might sum up those comments as a sheer frustration for someone who could not find a job; or someone who has a mindset that Canada is only for the white people; and that multiculturalism has changed the image of a country; and that our security is being compromised. With so much land we have to explore, and with so much skilled jobs are waiting to be filled; and with the aging population and the negative effect of a low birth rate; and with the sustainability of economic growth in the coming decades, immigration has a major role to fire the engine of economic growth, and making the mosaic of immigrants more colorful and exciting. I love Canada! And we welcome the 300,000 new permanent residents with an open arms, hearts and minds.

T
he annual summer picnic of the officers and members of the Original Filipino Association of Manitoba (OFSAM) is one of the best gatherings held by seniors, an event when the officers and members, friends and their families join together for a one day social affair.
"We are having fun every time the seniors gather and this makes us more active in our lives," said Letty Antonio, president of OFSAM. "We bring food, share the stories, dance and sing. These make us much happier, even healthier." Last summer, the officers, members and friends had a great time at the Assiniboine Park, near the Duck Pond.

Two Local Artists Releases Respective debut Albums
Band of Brothers The 12/21 launches Wish Local Filipino Canadian Alternative Rock band The 12/21 will be launching its debut CD, titled Wish, on November 12, 2016, at Filipino Seniors Hall (49 Euclid Avenue). Entrance is free! You may buy your copy of the CD Wish at the gig itself. The EP Wish is a solid collection of original songs written by the band: “Adventure,” “Larawan,” “Wish,” “Bakit Mo ’Ko Iniwan?”, and “Don’t Let Go.” The structural integrity of the songs, the vocal melodies and harmonies, and the polished quality of the instrumentation
are simply a result of The 12/21’s years of hard work, perseverance, serious approach to their craft, and openness to various styles of music. Add to that, the band has been playing around the community prolifically for several years now, with the loving and active support of their parents. The 12/21 is comprised by the Maceda brothers Roman (vocals/guitar) and twins Rico (bass/vocals) and Roque (drums). The three really rock hard onstage; but as soon as they put their instruments down and leave the spotlight, they turn into these youthful, amiable, and humble spirits—a mark of true Rockstars, who are serious with their craft but who are grounded and acknowledging of their roots and beginnings. Young couple discovers the wonders of Manitoba
Sunset at FortWhyte Alive and the migration of the Canadian geese to the south begins.
The lady photographers, from l to r: Gale Simpson, Viola Davidson, Gail Marchessault, Ruth Penner, Terumi Kuwada and Debbie Nolasco.
Bryan and Debbie have a perfect jump shot.
Oak Hammock Marsh, St. Norbert Art Centre/Trappist Ruins and FortWhyte Alive have captivated Bryan and Debbie Nolasco, a young couple who arrived a year ago, and looking forward to discover the wonderful places in Winnipeg and beyond. “Moving to a new place is not an easy path. We wanted to embrace the new place, see the wonderful places of Manitoba, discover the history and its culture, in a way it can serve as a powerful way to get unstuck and more forward. The more we embrace the new place, the more we feel at home on a path of growth and change. Going outside our comfort zone ceases to feel stressful and instead it becomes fun, stimulating, empowering and even playful,” Debbie said with sparkling eyes, full of enthusiasm. It was a sunny October 23, I decided to go back to my favorite escape from the hustle-bustle of the city, the Trapist Ruins at St. Norbert Arts Centre. I have been working on my on-going project about "Living Trees" and while I was taking some close shots of trunks of the trees, a couple was busy looking for a good shot of the La Salle River. And the lady asked me if i'm Hot Rod? And I said yes. And I asked: "When did you know about Hot Rod. She, a nurse and an avid photographer, said with a smile: "From an internet TV show of Matty in Manila.Wow, you're the real Hot Rod. Unbelievable. We were teasing each other that I would like to see Hot Rod in person...we are lucky today to meet you, Sir, in person." That was the icebraker for me and the young couple to engage in conversation as if we had met before. And because Bryan and Debbie have embedded the love of nature, I invited the couple to
visit "Fortwhyte Alive", to see the migrating Canada geese." Glad we meet you, Sir Rod. It is a real treat," said Bryan, an IT, System & Network Analyst at the University of Manitoba Student’s Union (UMSU). With their enthusiasm to see ForthWhyte Alive on that Sunday afternoon, and the start of a new bonding as friends, both have agreed to and answers for the Filipino Journal’s new section featuring the lives and loves of our new permanent residents. FJ: What made you decide to settle in Winnipeg? Has someone told you that Winnipeg is one of the cities in Canada to raise a family? Byran and Debbie: In our view, Winnipeg is a great place to move. We moved here for the better life opportunity and for the people we love. Bryan’s siblings and some of our relatives lives here. Indeed, if you’re starting a family, it’s a great place to live in where it offers access to health care, education and affordable housing. Lastly, the people are fantastic and very friendly. FJ: When did you start loving nature? Have you traveled to the various places in the Philippines and what experiences you had after engaging yourself with those places? Debbie: I know there are simple ways we can all reconnect with nature whether we live in the urban, the rural, or somewhere in between. I grew up in a place where beach is pretty close and sometimes the best thing I can do is walk to the nearest beach and play with my friends. At my early 20s, I started Photography as my hobby and eventually started taking photos of the different subjects and places. Indeed, my camera constantly reminds me to walk, explore and take a lot of photos. The magic really begins when you stay in a place

and give yourself enough time to witness extraordinary things, meet new people, gain insight, and understanding of the place, history and its culture. For this reason, I learned that beautiful things can be found everywhere. Bryan: I grew up in a rural area where rice fields, mango farm, and farms animals are visibly seen. I also love nature ever since I was a little. I usually play with my friends and rush to the nearest mango farm where we play hide and seek. Hiking is my favorite hobby way back home. I usually do hiking during weekends with my workmates. For me, hiking is a great way to explore new place and rare opportunity to get in touch with nature. My very first hike was along the southern Batangas, in the coastal mountain of San Juan, Mt. Daguldul. It was a life-changing experience: we hiked all day, climbed hills for awe-inspiring views and made our way through it. Every minute felt like an adventure and the combination of the fresh air and sense of accomplishment is something indescribable. Bryan and Debbie: We both explored the province of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Bicol and Palawan. The beauty of nature in one place is hard to describe, you have to see the place with your own eyes. It was the surroundings and the stunning views of the seascape and landscape captured our love for nature. From the beautiful landscape, endless white beaches, crystal clear waters and an underwater world, that will take your breath away. Every destination is truly paradise. As a couple, the priceless treasure engraved in our hearts and minds while exploring a place together is everlasting. The learning experience bonds us together and offers us an opportunity to revel in knowledge as we open our minds and hearts to the world of nature. FJ: You mentioned that you had organized a group of lady photographers and would you continue that initiative in Winnipeg?
Debbie: In the year of 2008, I founded Pinay Shutters, a diverse collective of Filipino Women Photographers. We are former affiliated member of The Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation (FPPF). Indeed, we successfully lunched few photo exhibits and events in Manila. For that reason, Pinay Shutters was once featured photography club in Manila Bulletin, Philippines’ largest broadsheet newspaper. I would love to join any existing photography club here in Winnipeg. It would be really fun to organize a small group of Pinays who are interested in Photography. FJ: How would you plan to visit other places in Winnipeg, even during Winter time? Bryan and Debbie: Wee simply can’t miss Winnipeg’s Winter Wonderland and Festival du Voyageur, the biggest Canadian winter festival, explore and try skating on the Assiniboine River Trail, get acquainted with Winnipeg’s art scene, spend the day at Assiniboine Park ,tour the political heart of Manitoba at Manitoba Legislative Building, visit the beautiful church of St. Boniface Cathedral-Basilica, explore the beauty of The Forks, revisit Forty Whyte Alive and experience slide down a massive toboggan run onto the frozen lake, experience the Xorbing or Snow tubing at Adrenaline Adventures, and take a journey through Manitoba’s past, present and future at the Manitoba Museum and Canadian Museum for Human Rights. FJ: Being a young couple, you have the freedom to travel wherever you want to go, what would be your plans for 2017? Bryan and Debbie: We’re in our early 30s, we don’t have kids yet and we like to get out and take part in what the city has to offer. We would like to explore and welcome the unfamiliar and the unexpected beauty of Manitoba and hopefully our travel experience around the province will be more enjoyable and fulfilling. We are excited to explore the Interlake region of Manitoba

next year. This includes exploring Hecla Provincial Park, take a journey to the northwest corner of the Interlake at Steep Rock Limestone Cliffs, revisit the Oak Hammock Marsh, discover one of the nature’s oddities at the Narcisse Snake Dens, visit Grand Beach Provincial Park, and tour around Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. FJ: What will be your advise to our new permanent residents in Winnipeg, allowing themselves to visit these wonderful places in Winnipeg in particular and in Manitoba in general? Bryan and Debbie: Exploring the city and province provides learning and education about places and history, it connects us to other cultures and people, expands our awareness and introduces us to greater diversity, also gives us time to heal, reduces stress and helps us regain enthusiasm for life and lastly it stokes curiosity and awakens our inner child by offering us new, “first-time” experiences. Plus, exploring great attractions and activities in Winnipeg doesn’t have to break the bank. Just take advantage of the green spaces, walking trails, and free activities for the whole family. Today, plan a trip and go somewhere new. Explore the city of Winnipeg and the regions of Manitoba. Embrace the beauty of its nature, culture and history which create everlasting memories with your family and loved ones. (Editor’s Note: The Winnipeg Filipino population has increased exponentially through the years, and every new permanent resident has a story to be told. And through this special section of the Filipino Journal, we want to invite our new kababayans to share their experiences with our readers, making us your medium to reach out others and learn something special from your lives and loves! Can You Lend Me a Dollar or Two? Canadians call the dollar coin a loonie and the two-dollar a toonie. However, most likely, many people nowadays—especially of the younger generation—no longer know how these words came about. So, for everyone’s dose of trivial yet significant information, here is the origin of the terms.
Loonie. Introduced in 1987, the gold-colored Canadian one-dollar coin has been nicknamed loonie in reference to the image of the common loon that is found on its reverse. The common loon is an aquatic bird, one of Canada’s national animals. Toonie. This term is simply a wordplay, derived from
combining two and loonie, to refer to the Canadian two-dollar coin. The featured animal on the toonie, however, is a polar bear; so, it could have also been called a “polie.” Moreover, if there was a Canadian three-dollar coin, then your guess for what it would have been called is as good as mine.
The Last Leaf In the passing of time, the origins of many words fade out from the consciousness of many people. In the Internet age, relearning about them should be easy. All one needs are the curiosity and the initiative to google them with just a few clicks on the mouse.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

t didn't take long for Patrik Laine to show the hockey world why he was drafted second overall by the Winnipeg Jets in this past summer's entry draft. The
18 year-old rookie sensation from Finland has quickly shown his offensive prowess with his lethal shot and have Jets fans excited for the team's future with Laine leading the way. In a battle of the first and second overall 2016 draft picks, Patrik Laine got the better of top pick Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs. In what could bloom to be the next big rivalry of superstars, Laine helped the Jets rally back from a 4-0 deficit by scoring his first career hat trick that included the game winner in overtime. Matthews had a chance to win it in overtime on a
breakaway but was turned away by Michael Hutchinson. Laine came streaking down the wing and wired one past Frederik Andersen giving Winnipeg a 5-4 overtime win. After the game, Laine downplayed his individual accomplishment in favour of the team's win. "It's always nice to score," Laine said. "It was just amazing to help my team to win with those goals". With the sun shining bright on Investors Group field for the Heritage Classic, it was Oilers Cam Talbot who was shined brightest. Talbot stopped 31 shots helping the Edmonton Oilers spoil the festivities with a 3-0 shutout win. Mark Letetsu scored shorthanded and Darnell Nurse and Zack Kassian completed the scoring for the Oilers in front of 33,240 fans. The Jets dropped the opening of a home-and-home series against the Dallas Stars but exacted revenge back on home ice. The

Stars held off the Jets in Dallas 3-2 thanks to Ante Niemi's 28 saves. Stars Tyler Seguin scored the game winner and Joel Armia and Mark Scheifele tallied the Jets goals in the loss. Two nights later, Patrik Laine made sure the Jets had the last laugh. Laine scored twice, both on the power play, with pinpoint accuracy. Tyler Myers opened the scoring and Kyle Connor scored his first career goal helping the Jets bounce back against the Stars 4-1. The Jets travelled to Denver one night later and edged the Colorado Avalanche 1-0. Shawn Matthias scored the lone goal of the game and his second of the year and Michael Hutchinson turned away 37 shots for the shutout. After winning two straight, the Jets dropped a Sunday matinee to Kyle Okposo and the Buffalo Sabres 3-1. Okposo scored twice and Sabres goaltender Robin Lehner played brilliantly saving 37 of 38 shots. Nikolaj Ehlers scored

the lone Jets goal. Winnipeg fell victim to another hot goaltender. Washington Capitals netminder Braden Holtby steered away 43 Jets shots in a 3-2 victory at the MTS Centre. Down 2-0 in the third, the Jets fought back with Mark Scheifele getting his team on the board with under 7 minutes left. With 2:25 minutes left in the game, Joel Armia fought hard on the boards to set up Adam Lowry tying goal. Capitals forward Jay Beagle ended the Jets rally with 30 seconds left winning the faceoff and backhanding a goal past Connor Hellebuyck for the game winner. Helllebuyck had 24 saves in a losing effort. The Winnipeg Jets conclude their home-and-home series with the Washington Capitals to kick off a three game road trip. The month of November will be a gruleing month as 10 out of 16 games will be on the road.

to care for the absence of defensive play that was very reminiscent of the 80s matchups between the two clubs. In storybook fashion, it was Selanne playing the hero to the 31,317 fans winning the game on a penalty shot with 3 seconds left to play. Selanne who retired two seasons ago, clearly showed he was the best player on the ice scoring 2 goals and 3 assists. Even "The Great One" took notice. "The game ended the way it should end with the best player on the ice on the home team scoring the big goal," Wayne Gretzky praised Selanne. "Good for him, good for the franchise, and great for the city. Tomorrow is the real game, though, and tomorrow is what matters." Selanne talked about the experience of playing once again in Winnipeg.
"It was a great ending. The whole weekend has been unbelievable" Selanne said after the game. "Coming back here meeting all the old teammates and guys you haven't seen in 20 years... we don't get a chance to do this often and so far it's been an unbelievable weekend." The Edmonton Oilers took some wind out of the city of Winnipeg's sails the following day, downing the Winnipeg Jets 3-0. In a contest that was delayed for two hours due to sunshine, Cam Talbot shined brightest turning away all 31 shots. Mark Letetsu's
shorthanded goal proved to be the game winner with Darnell Nurse and Zack Kassian capping off the scoring. It wasn't the ending of the weekend for most of the 33,240 in attendance wanted but it was an amazing experience for everyone that attended and involved. The 2016 Heritage Classic gave fans the opportunity to see their heroes for one last time and to experience an outdoor professional hockey game. It's a rare opportunity but the city seized it and showed why hockey is part of Winnipeg's heritage.

t wasn't the ending that Winnipeg Jets fans had hoped for but the overall experience of the Tim Horton's Heritage Classic will be a memorable one. The city of Winnipeg played host to the outdoor game at Investors Group Field and welcomed past legends of the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers. It was a chance for fans to see their past heroes lace up the skates once again and a chance to see their future ones as well. The festivities started off with former Winnipeg Jet Teemu Selanne getting the key to the city from Mayor Brian Bowman. After fans crammed the MTS Centre to see the Jets and Oilers alumni practice, Bowman presented the "Finnish Flash" with the honour. "Teemu captured Winnipegger's hearts in 1992 when he exploded into the NHL with the greatest rookie season ever," Bowman said honouring Selanne. "He always made time for fans, for autographs, and for charities, and really is a true ambassador for the game of hockey we all love." Selanne reminisced about how Winnipeg embraced him as a young player.
"The way how the people, the fans, lived the journey with me especially the first year it was just unbelievable," Selanne told the media. "They made me feel so special and helped me so much in the years I played here. Winnipeg has a really important part— a big part— of my heart and who I am." Investors Group Field was transformed from a football field to a hockey rink for an October weekend in Winnipeg and for the most part, Mother Nature cooperated. Fans were treated to a spectator plaza that featured, food, games, picture taking, and live entertainment before both games. There was a chance to take photos in both Jets and Oilers jerseys, practice their shot in a target practice booth, and listen to the sounds of punk-pop group Sum 41. The best entertainment, however, was saved for the ice. The alumni of the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers took hockey fans back to the 80s and 90s when the likes of Dale Hawerchuk, Teemu Selanne, Mark Messier, and Wayne Gretzky dominated the hockey scene. The game went back and forth and nobody seemed

In view of this, our tagline is Celebrating Life.

originally wanted to start a water refill business, but when my dad retired (26+ years at Seven Oaks Hospital as the front entrance fulltime cleaner), I wanted to build a business around his expertise, passion and personality. While starting up the business, I started noticing how dirty some places are, such as restaurants, offices and houses. It was then that I remembered what I was taught at the business planning workshop which was: build a business around your expertise and build a business that solves a problem that the consumers are having. The problem was evident. Cleaning was lacking and cleaners in the city were starting to slack off. As for the expertise, that is where my father came in.

•Joelle Foster, Futurpreneur Canada: When I was tasked with opening a physical office for Futurpreneur here in Manitoba, I looked at it as starting my own business and I have run it like an entrepreneur ever since. I believed in what this incredible organization was doing in other provinces and I knew that I could make a difference in Manitoba. I recognized that for young people, there was a lack of access to finance, business planning assistance, networks and skills. It is imperative that we invest in ways that stem the tide of young people leaving Manitoba’s communities in search of opportunities by helping them to create their own jobs and jobs for others. Also, as older entrepreneurs are set to retire, young entrepreneurs must be prepared to replace them. Investing in young people brings considerable rewards: small businesses led by young people are powerful job creators and record higher growth rates than other small and medium-sized businesses.

Although God had other plans, from the onset of our new business with zero patients, we adopted an approach to graciously give back to the community here and aboard. •Marilyn Magtoto, RBC Royal •Sherilyn Andres-Daquis, Bank: As an immigrant myself, I Maples Physiotherapy / Sherilyn know the hardships that families Andres-Daquis Physiotherapy go through when they come to North End: As a foreign-trained Canada not knowing anything physiotherapist, it has not been about how banking is done and easy for me to secure my license to how it works.
