ALL SMILES FOR SANTA Filipinos represent! The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, together with other community groups, joined and represented the Filipino community at the recently held annual Winnipeg Santa Claus Parade. The Filipino spirit of Christmas was definitely present with the showcasing of iconic Bahay Kubo and Parol (lanterns) and the joyful singing and dancing to Tagalog Christmas songs, not to mention the unity and volunteerism. It was indeed a night where most kababayans just felt happy and proud being Filipinos.Photo by Norman Padilla SANTA 4►

Filipino Christmas spirit alive at the Santa Claus Parade

N

ow on its 109th year, the annual Winnipeg Santa Claus Parade has once again captured the attention of Winnipeggers with their festive presentation, leaving everyone in awe, particularly those who have made it a tradition to watch the parade live. Tens of thousands of Winnipeggers gathered on parade routes along Portage Avenue on a drizzling afternoon last November 16 to witness Winnipeg's longestrunning free community event. Sixty float entries from local businesses and groups joined the parade, one of which is Manitoba Filipino Street Festival representing the Filipino community.

Regio Family

The float featured the iconic Bahay Kubo depicting the theme "Pasko sa Nayon" (Christmas in Rural Philippines). Joined by Quezon Province Association of Manitoba, Pinoy Alliance of Canada and some kababayan zumba instructors, the Pinoy representatives danced to some popular Filipino Christmas songs that made a lot of kababayan happy and proud. The group was also donned in coordinated scarves and toques. It is the third time for the Regio family to attend the Santa Claus Parade. "We were pleasantly surprised to see the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival float! We were beaming with pride to see our community being represented

in a very high profile activity," Sugar Regio shared. I also fondly explained to my children that as kids, we used to make parols or paper lanterns in our schools back home," Sugar added. The Baysa family said it was a different experience for them this year. "It is surreal, our first time to listen to Tagalog Christmas songs and see colourful parol in the parade," said Michelle Baysa. MFSF team is thankful to its supporters and all kababayans they met during the Santa Claus parade and looks forward to representing the Filipino community again next year.

Duterte defends controversial SEAG cauldron President Duterte said there was no corruption and extravagance in building the P45million Southeast Asian Games cauldron designed by the late national artist for architecture Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa. The President defended the structure that will be used to carry the SEA Games flame, saying it was a work of art and the artist has the prerogative to set the cost of the artwork. Earlier, Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said the structure was an unnecessary extravagance and that money could have been used to build 50 classrooms at P1 million each. The President turned the tables on Drilon by asking why he built a large coliseum in his home province of Iloilo instead of building roads.

Aquino reminds gov’t to ‘set priorities’

F

ormer President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III agreed with Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon that the government should have prioritized more important projects like the building of more classrooms instead of using the funds for a P50-million cauldron that will be used for the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Aquino reminded the government of proper appropriation saying that the priority is not the Sea Games which will only last for more than a week. He added that the current administration should instead prioritize education for the youth. Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon earlier questioned the construction of the structure, saying it was an unnecessary extravagance.

Robredo says non-Cabinet post doesn’t bother her

Vice President Leni Robredo said is not holding back in her job as the co-chair of the Interagency Committee on Anti-Illegal

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) did not sit well with Duterte. Malacañang said Robredo should not consult with “enemies of the state” who have prejudged Duterte’s war on drugs. She defended her consultations with various foreign organizations by saying that the drug problem is a transnational issue. She added that the supply of drugs cannot be restrained if there will be no cooperation with other countries. On resentment over her appointment as ICAD coDrugs (ICAD) even if it was not a chair while being the leader of Cabinet post. opposition, she said it’s not her Robredo’s meetings with problem as she vowed to do the foreign organizations like the job given to her.

The coworkers won the $1 million guaranteed prize draw on November 9. When Santos checked the group’s ticket on the WCLC mobile app, he was in disbelief. “Holy smokes, one million? No way!’” was his reaction when he saw all the zeroes on the screen. “I didn’t believe it until I called Customer Care and they said, ‘Congratulations!’” The coworkers have some ideas about what they’d like to do with their windfall. “I’d like to save money for my kids and family,” Santos said. “I’d also like to take my

family on a holiday—perhaps a cruise to Panama.” Yumang and Santoyo are considering using their winnings to visit the Philippines or vacation in the Caribbean.

Santos purchased the group’s winning ticket at Pop & Shop, located at 132-701 Regent Avenue West in Winnipeg. Their winning guaranteed prize number was 35051857-05.

Duterte appoints Leni anti-drug czarina

W

hatever got into President Rodrigo Duterte’s head when he appointed Vice President Leni Robredo co-chair of the Inter-agency Committee on AntiIllegal Drug (ICAD) is anybody’s guess. First of all, Duterte knows that Leni is against killing of drug pushers and users. So why did Duterte put her in charge of enforcing the government’s anti-narcotics policy without “senseless killings” that has so far eliminated some 30,000 drug pushers and users? Has he gone loco? Or did he appoint her to keep her mouth shut from criticizing Duterte’s extra-judicial killings of those involved in drugs? And why did Leni accept the position when she knows that she has to play ball with her new partner, Duterte himself, in the anti-drug war? So how does Leni start in her new job as the anti-drug czar or should I say czarina? Which makes me wonder if Leni has the cojones to do a cunning and ruthless czarina’s job? Which reminds me of the Russian Czarina Catherine the Great who ruled the Russian Empire for 34 years. He husband of six months Emperor Peter III died in 1762. He was deposed in a palace coup orchestrated by Catherine. She relied on a loyal retinue of generals. She’s known as an “enlightened despot.” Czarina Leni, whose late husband Secretary of Interior and Local Government Jesse Robredo died in a plane crash in 2012 ran for vice president in 2016 and won by a slim margin. Being single and inexperienced in the war on drugs, Leni has to work with the male-dominated inner circle of Duterte,

But she took the job anyway, perhaps thinking that it’s a piece of cake running an operation that is infested with corrupt police officers coddled by corrupt politicians, drug smugglers, and drug lords. But it would be naïve to think that she doesn’t know the dangerous waters she’s treading. She knows it. Yet… she took the challenge of the most dangerous and thankless job in the government. Heck, Leni could have declined the job offer. She’s sitting pretty as vice-president doing nothing and safely tucked in a palatial office with all the help of a staff that virtually does nothing. She can go on a speaking tour around the country preparing for the upcoming presidential election. She could charm the people with her smiling demeanor that would make Bongbong Marcos look like a boy playing marbles, counting them for votes. He still couldn’t believe he lost to Leni. But Leni is taking it easy. Just let Bongbong figure out how to collect more marbles and beat Leni in the vote recount, which could go on until the next president is elected. And if Leni survives the hazards of the anti-drug war, she could win handily in the 2022 presidential election. But how is she going to win the anti-drug war? So far, no drug czar has succeeded before. Perhaps a different approach has to be taken in fighting the drug war. Which reminds me of the late president Ramon Magsaysay. When he took over as Defense Secretary under then president Elpidio Quirino, the Hukbalahaps or Huks were massing in Bulacan ready to enter Manila. But Magsaysay knew that to beat the Huks, he had to play their own game.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

The Huks waged war against the government using the slogan, “Land for the Landless.” So they’re fighting to get land from the government. So what Magsaysay did was used the Huks’ slogan and promised to give land, a plow, and a carabao for their weapons. Hundreds of Huk rebels surrendered their arms and were resettled to Mindanao ready to go into farming. Magsaysay’s campaign worked and it broke the back of the Huk movement. Within two years, the Huk rebellion was defeated, not with guns but with land. Czarina Leni could use Magsaysay’s playbook and fight drugs with something that would give meaning to their problems, which is inadequate social programs, and to give the drug users an opportunity to live a meaningful and productive life. Give them jobs. But there are an estimated four million drug users today. To resettle this huge number of people would take a miracle. Duterte admitted that he can’t do it. The problem with Duterte is that he failed to stop drug smuggling, the root of the problem. Drug lords were not prosecuted. They conduct their business unhampered by the police. Entry of illegal drugs into the country goes unabetted. If Czarina Leni stops drug smuggling, then the anti-drug program is half won. But with the intervention of corrupt politicians, drug smuggling is thriving. Czarina Leni has to be forceful in making decisions. She’d be stepping on a lot of toes and attempts will be made to remove her from her job. But she shouldn’t waver no matter who gets hurt. And if she’s removed from her job because of palace intrigues, so be it. Let Duterte remove her. It’s not going to hurt her for standing up to her principles. At the end of the day, winning the hearts of people through social justice is a lot easier than fighting them with guns. I wish vice president Leni Robredo the best. When Magsaysay ran for president in 1953, a year after he defeated the Huks, he won by more than 65% of the vote. Leni has two years to make a difference. If she has the will then she can do it.

They are the first two Filipino members of the city’s Carillon Toastmasters which is affiliated with the US-based ToastMasters International whose purpose is to promote communication and public speaking skills. The participation of Cajurao and Angeles in Carillon Toastmasters serves as an encouraging sign for the Filipino immigrant population’s integration with the local Credit Counselling • Credit Rebuilding community. In an article from the website of Pathways to Prosperity: Canada, studies show that joining local neighborhood networks and various community groups like a ToastMasters club are part of the factors that attracts,

integrates and retains immigrants to a certain locale. Cajurao admits that her long-standing interest in being a ToastMaster was influenced in part by having a brother-in-law who was an active member of a club back in the Philippines. She signed up with the Carillon ToastMasters in 2017 after learning that their membership dues aligned with her budget. She says that the club’s public speaking exercises boosted her confidence in communicating with co-workers who are native English speakers. As for Angeles, she applied for membership the following year after seeing a social media post about the club’s open house event. She says she is glad about her decision to join. “Aside from improving our confidence and communication skills, the activities are designed so that we have fun as well.” This was evident at the club’s recent celebration of its 40th Anniversary where the lively atmosphere was

sustained by humorous anecdotes from members past and present, and a trivia game that encouraged answers requiring impromptu, off-the-wall explanations. Both Cajurao and Angeles agree with the sentiments from club president Les Lilley and founding member Al Hamm that the Carillon ToastMasters has come a long way from its modest beginnings four decades ago. As the club looks forward to growing with new members, guests are encouraged to drop in and join the fun at their meetings every Thursday at 7 PM at the Jake Epp Library. Kris Ontong is the past president of the Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association (SEMFA), and is an awardee at the 2019 National Filipino-Canadian Heritage Event for his active role in the Filipino community.

Sistema Winnipeg encourages the children to reach their full potential and inspires greater social change thru music within the community. Since its founding in 2011, Sistema Winnipeg has partnered with the University of Manitoba to evaluate the impacts of the program on students, families and community. Paul Ong’s quintessential performance highlights the many

varied musical gems, making the audience experience some of the famous symphonies, applauding with acceptance every end of the aria; and the experiential unlimited musical rendition by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, as Naomi Woo, the conductor, musically belted every piece of the masterpieces, with a tempered but playful rendition. Paul also performed with guest Micah Buenafe who, herself, dreams of starring in a Broadway musical someday. Not only was this concert a way of giving back to the community but Paul’s giving back and recognition to the person who has made him into who he is today, his mother, Myrna Ong. In his introduction on his mom, Paul said “I would like to welcome on stage someone who has influenced me greatly to have a positive outlook in life all the time. Many of you would always ask me where and how I had gained this outlook in life- and it is this person that has made me into what I am today. And there is this person in our family who has been the rock,” Paul Ong says with a touch of poignancy. “As many of you might have noticed, over the last few months many of you have not

seen my mom. She is currently undergoing a medical condition but she still stays positive and strong. I would like to welcome on stage my mom.” The benefit concert ends with the subtle, yet with inspiring rendition of “What A Wonderful World” by the Sistema Choir composed of sixty young students, thirty of which came from Elwick School (Seven Oaks School Division)and the other thirty students came from King Edward School (WSD I). “We are deeply humbled and thankful for everyone’s support in this year’s annual concert for a cause 2019 with the Winnipeg continuation on page 17

Sixty-two new Canadians take their oath of citizenship at PCCM

O

utside the spring-like weather added warmth to the sixty-two new Canadians who took an oath of citizenship at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba recently. There was excitement in the air as people from the different ethnic background got ready for the most important event in their lives: a true Canadian Citizen. This year’s Citizenship Ceremony was held at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba under the sponsorship of the current executive and board members of PCCM led by Virginia Gayot, the current president of PCMM. Judge Suzanne Carriere graced the citizenship oath taking which has been held in various places in Manitoba, to reflect the openness and engagement of the government in welcoming the new Canadians.

And for the sixty-two new Canadians, they have more advantages because of many benefits for becoming a Canadian, like: 1) You will be able to work in all jobs, having an access to some restrictive jobs available; 2) There are no resident requirements to stay as a citizen; 3) Your children will be Canadians; 4) You can vote, an exercise to choose who will govern the country, or the province or the city; 5) You can travel easily especially to those countries which have no visa requirements; 6) You can get involved in politics. 7) You can continue getting social benefits; 8) You don’t need to renew your PR card; 8) You can get your consular services. (In case you’re abroad and if there is political upheaval, Canadians are the priorities for safety; and finally, 9) You can’t be deported. To the sixty-new Canadians, welcome to the club! Symphony Orchestra! THANK YOU for believing and being part of making this dream a reality. To Vickar Automotive Group (Mr. Larry and Ms. Tova Vickar), all our sponsors, media partners, photographers, event partners, volunteers, ticket sellers and buyers, and to my family, THANK YOU. None of this would have been possible without everyone’s

combined efforts. Thank you for allowing us to use the show as a platform to give back to the community, provide opportunities for youth to share and develop their talents, and to inspire and empower others. We hope you will all join us in our journeys ahead,” Paul Ong said. “Through everyone’s support, we were able to give $3,000 to General Wolfe School, and $25,000 to the show’s beneficiary- Sistema Winnipeg. These contributions will surely

make an impact in changing lives of many children and youth in the inner city,” he adds with a smiling compromise. With the collaboration of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Paul Ong’s annual concert for a cause, the 2019 charitable event exudes the greatness of helping other people and elevates our spirit of giving and sharing, making this world, our world, a wonderful place to live and to love.

The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros

Have you been a victim of one of these scams? Scammers are on the loose! Calm down and do not panic if you receive a call from a man with a threatening voice, telling you to press 1 immediately because you have committed a crime, as for information from your Canadian Social Insurance Number. Much possible not to press 1. Totally ignore it and put down the phone. And immediately phone Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or it is called -PHONE BUSTERS-: 1-885-495-8501. And report the call which you have received. It happened to me one day with two phone calls from the two area codes: 905 and 613. I did press 1 and a man with an Asian accent told me to give to him my Social Insurance Number, my phone number and my birthday and telling me that I have a criminal record. I did argue and the man had raised voice when I mentioned to him, with firm voice and strong sense of urgency, that I will be phoning the RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and he dropped his phone.

I called the police nonemergency number: (204) 9866222. And if you do not suffer financial loss, phone Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or -PHONE BUSTER- (see phone above). And you suffer any financial loss, wait for the line, someone would answer your phone call. Remember that some of our kababayans were victims of the CRA phone scam. Fear of prosecution and deportation had over-powered their sense of composure, their sense of security, panicking that they might be apprehended and the most devastating consequence, that they might be deported because of their non-payment of whatever amount due to the Canada Revenue Agency. Many victims had gone to the money remittance offices or to the bank, as directed by the man on the phone; and paid the amount mentioned by the “officer” of CRA. And millions of dollars were paid to avoid any repercussions for not paying the amount owed to the government. With the advent of the international network (internet),

Top 10 scams where Canadians fall into! The latest: Social Insurance Number Scam scammers have all the time to found ways to get money from Canadians, especially the newcomers and the most vulnerable, the seniors. I do remember some seniors who were victims of phone scams, like travel and winning from some unknown contests. One senior had paid so much money, more than $6,000 for a travel promo to the Caribbean, and he was devastated when he found out that it was a scam. Just remember, CRA and other government agencies would not demand any amount, telling you to pay to some of the common money remittance agencies. And if you have a problem with CRA, or with Immigration or your Social Insurance Number, the government agencies write letters. And the officers do not demand fiercely for you to go to the bank and pay the amount you owe to this agency. In the CRA protocol, some collectors would send you letters on demand or would phone you with full identify. And these officers are kind enough to tell you their phone numbers for a much better communication. Service Canada would not phone you about your criminal case and ask you to settle the

case. And if there is a real case, report to RCMP or to the court, clarifying the case. And, in your judgement, that you could not remember any violation of the Canadian laws, then, ignore the phone call. The SIN scammers want your money immediately! And what are the top 10 scams Canadians fall into: 1) Romance Scams- (online dating profiles are fake!); 2) Income tax extortion Scam- (CRA officers calling you to pay immediately for your non-payment of income tax.); 3)Employment scam-Better Business Bureau notes that it gets harder to crack down because some scammers are operating through reputable services like Monster, Indeed and LinkedIn.; 4) Phishing- generally refers to scammers who are not what they seem to be; 5)Subscription Scam: skin care or wrinkles, or weight loss..do not subscribe and give your card number!..and watch your monthly statement!; 6) Advance Fee Loan scam: In Canada, lenders cannot ask for advance fee before giving a loan! The most vulnerable: persons and companies struggling for money. Beware!; 7) Tech Support Scams: Computer viruses? And Services? Go to the reputable repair services

First aired in November 1969 and still ongoing, Sesame Street celebrates its Golden Anniversary this month. Here’s to another 50 years of giving educational entertainment to not only children but also the young at heart.

f my recall is correct, the first time I saw an episode of the children's TV show Sesame Street, in the Philippines, was in 1973 or 1974. I was glued to the television every morning when the show was on, waiting most especially for the segments of Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the Frog, the piano-man Guy Smiley, and the grocery owner Mr. Hooper as well as the animated bits The Alligator King, Capital I and the

Lowercase n, and the Pinball Countdown. The Electric Co. and The Great Space Coaster Soon after, another similarly themed show came out—The Electric Co. (1971-1977), which was then followed by The Great Space Coaster (1981-1986), with the memorable Gary Gnu. Báta Batutà and Batíbot In the Philippines, by the late '70s, a children's show inspired by Sesame Street came about in the form of Báta Batutà, featuring its own local characters such as Kárdong Kalabáw, Alice Kamátis, and Professor Tiník.
