PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

The 2022 presidential derby is on

N

o, it’s not a misprint. What we’re talking about here is the presidential race in 2022. But while the winner of the 2016 presidential election is still anybody’s guess, whoever will be elected vice president in 2016 would be the next president in 2022. And here is the reason why? In my article, “Who doesn’t want to be vice president?” (August 28, 2015), I said: “Whoever wins the vice presidency would be in a good position to run for president in 2022. Statistics show that out of the 10 presidential elections since 1946 (excluding the presidential elections during the martial law), five incumbent vice presidents ran for president in the next presidential election and won. They were: Elpidio Quirino in 1948, Carlos P. Garcia in 1953, Diosdado Macapagal

in 1961, Joseph Estrada in 1998, and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2004. But three other incumbent vice presidents had opted not to run for president, to wit: Emmanuel Pelaez in 1965, Salvador Laurel in 1992, and Noli de Castro in 2010.” I postulated that based on these historical data, whoever is elected vice president in 2016 would win the presidency in 2022. To date, there are six candidates for vice president in 2016. However, there are only four presidential candidates: Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, Sen. Mary Grace Sonora PoeLlamanzares (more commonly known as Grace Poe), and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte. Popularity ratings The latest Social Weather

Stations (SWS) polls show that three of the four presidential candidates are in statistical tie: Poe at 26%, Binay at 24%, and Roxas at 20%. The Pulse Asia shows Poe at 26%, Roxas at 20%, and Binay at 19%. Duterte – considered the “dark horse” in the race – has ratings of 11% (SWS) and 16% (Pulse Asia). But Grace Poe’s citizenship is being challenged before the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET). If the SET rules that Poe is not a “natural-born” Filipino -- as constitutionally required for presidential candidates – then the citizenship case could go to the Supreme Court for final resolution. But regardless of whether Grace is deemed a natural-born Filipino or not, the controversy surrounding her birth would haunt her during the campaign, which could become a major distraction in convincing the electorate that she is fully and unquestionably qualified to be president of the country. But regardless whether the citizenship issue is laid to rest satisfactorily, Poe’s opponents would use it to destroy her credibility and character. Indeed, Grace’s citizenship problem smells like a rose to Binay, who was the frontrunner in the presidential derby until Grace entered the race. With his popularity ratings plummeting amidst a tsunami of corruption and plunder charges filed against him, Binay is losing a lot of the points he earned during his vice presidency in the past five years. If Poe were disqualified, Binay could bounce back in the race. But it won’t be that easy because Roxas would also benefit from a Poe withdrawal. With Poe expected to lose points – or disqualified -- because of her citizenship problem, Roxas would presumably take most of the points Poe would lose; thus, outpacing Binay in the race. With no corruption scandals involving Roxas and with Poe out of the race, Roxas would be in a good position to be elected president in 2016. Vice presidential race And this brings to fore the question: Who would be elected

vice president? As of today, there are six vice presidential candidates, four of who are in tandem with a presidential candidate. The pairings are: The Liberal Party’s (LP) standard bearer Roxas and vice presidential running mate Congresswoman Leni Robredo; the United Nationalist Alliance’s (UNA) standard bearer Binay and running mate Sen. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan; Independent Grace Poe and running mate Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero; and Duterte and running mate Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. The other two vice presidential candidates who aren’t paired with a presidential candidate are Senators Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV and Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Although they’re both members of the Nacionalista Party (NP), they will be running as independents. However, they are expected to “attach” themselves to a presidential candidate by way of a personal endorsement. Trillanes has already endorsed Poe, whose popularity could benefit Trillanes by such association. But what if Poe were disqualified? Then Trillanes will have to find another one to endorse or he might just remain unattached, which would make him like a “ronin,” a samurai with no master. The same is true with Marcos who has yet to “attach” himself to a presidential candidate, possibly Duterte. Not too long ago, Marcos said that he didn’t mind being Binay’s running mate. But when Binay offered Marcos to be his running mate, Marcos declined. He probably realized that it would be difficult for him be in tandem with Binay, who had figured prominently in fighting Bongbong’s father, the late strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos in the 1980s. It would also be awkward for Bongbong to be Duterte’s running mate because Duterte was associated with Cory Aquino’s revolutionary government in the aftermath of the People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos regime. Cory appointed Duterte as officer in charge (OIC) of Davao City

during her presidency. However, it’s interesting to note that before Bongbong declared his candidacy for vice president, he traveled to Davao City and had a meeting with Duterte. With four vice presidential candidates each in tandem with a presidential candidate, and two ronins, that would make an interesting mix of relatively young, strong-minded, and ambitious individuals, each having a distinct leadership style and an agenda on how to rule an overpopulated country that has yet to come of age. Who would it be? The winner will be taking over a vice presidency that is more than just glorified go-fer for the president. He or she can use the office of vice president as training ground for the presidency. As I have postulated earlier, whoever wins the vice presidency in 2016 would be the next president in 2022, which begs the question: Of the six vice presidential candidates in 2016 – Robredo, Escudero, Trillanes, Cayetano, Marcos, and Honasan -- who wouldn’t want to run for president in 2022 if he or she were elected vice president in 2016? What I am seeing in my crystal ball is that all of them, with the exception of Honasan, will run for president in 2022. But Honasan, who might not have any inclination to seek the presidency at this time, might have a change of heart midway through his term in 2019 and decide to run for president in 2022. Once he tastes power, he can get used to it. Indeed, power is aphrodisiac: you taste it once; you’d want more… and more. With all six vice presidential harboring a desire to seek the presidency in 2022, you’d expect each and every one of them to use all resources they have at their disposal to win – by all means -the vice presidency in 2016. It would be shooting two birds with one stone; whomever we elect vice president in 2016, we’re also electing president in 2022. Yes, the 2022 presidential derby is on!

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

Flying Start I

n previous years, the Winnipeg Jets struggled with a lack of secondary scoring. If the road trip to cap off the 2015-2016 was any indicator, the Jets have addressed that issue with the play of some talented rookies and showed poise and determination that helped them reach the playoffs last year. The Jets opened the season in Boston to take on the Bruins. After a sluggish first period that saw Bruins forward David Krejci open the scoring, the visiting team stormed back for three goals in the second period. Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, and Drew Stafford scored in the second and Chris Thorburn, Nic Petan, and Alexander Burmistrov tallied in the third to down the Bruins 6-2. Petan's goal was the first in his NHL career.

game. Scheifele found the back of the net for his third goal in three games. Playing back-to-back games can take its toll on teams. After a loss to the Islanders, the Jets showed poise and determination against the New York Rangers one night later. Mats Zuccarello opened the scoring for the Rangers 6:45 into the first period. Jets rookie Nikolaj Ehlers responded

just 46 seconds later to tie the game up. Playing shorthanded, Bryan Little snapped a shot in the slot to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead. The Jets never looked back as Little added another one in the third to secure a 4-1 win. Hutchinson was brilliant in net stopping 40 of 41 shots. After the game, Ehlers reflected on his first four games with the Jets.

One night later, the Jets took on the New Jersey Devils. After scoring six goals, the Jets found their offensive production in the second period with another three goal output. Scheifele and Wheeler both scored their second of the season and Michael Hutchinson turned away 20 of 21 shots in a 3-1 victory. ExJets made the scoresheet for the Devils as Jiri Tlusty scored with Lee Stempniak picking up an assist. The New York Islanders moved to the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn and recorded their first win there at the expense of the Jets. Isles superstar John Tavares notched a goal and two assists in a 4-2 win. Despite the loss, goalie Ondrej Pavelec saved 40 of 43 shots and kept his squad in the

“It was a great experience playing my first NHL game in Boston and finishing off this road trip with three wins," Ehlers said. The Royal Palace & National Memorial.

T

olerance and diversity, windmills and cheese, canals and bridges, museums and century-old buildings, history and culture, Anne Frank and Van Gogh: this is Amsterdam in a nutshell. By the number Amsterdam has 31 museums, 141 art galleries, 165 canals, 1,281 bridges, 881,000 bicycles, 177 nationalities, 2,367,809 metropolitan area residents, and 15,749,000 annual visitors,.

Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (frequently called Holland). However, The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government (a constitutional monarchy with his Majesty Willem Alexander as King since 2013) and not Amsterdam. Founded as a fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam derives its name from "Amstelredamme" (literally, a dam of the river Amstel). We have had the opportunity to visit twice this beautiful city during the months of August and October when the temperature is cooler and crowd is sparser. After exiting the Amsterdam Central Railway Station the first sight to see is the "Damrak", often called the "Red Carpet" of the train station, a bustling avenue full of cafes, terraces, department stores, and shops that takes us to the famous "Dam Square", the historical centre and the beating heart of the city jostling with tourists and locals and hundreds of pigeons. If you miss Dam Square you haven't seen Amsterdam!

There are plenty of sights to see both in and around the square. The must-see in the square is the baroque-style Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis), once the town hall, then as official residence of the Dutch Royal family and now used occasionally for entertaining and official functions. Next to the palace is the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) no longer used for church services but is now the site of Royal coronations and weddings and other royal investiture ceremonies and also final resting place of Dutch naval heroes. Next to the New Church is the magnificent Magna Plaza, once the city's main post office

and later transformed in 1992 into a shopping centre. Its the place to shop for designer clothing and fashion accessories. Opposite the palace you'll see the 5-star Hotel Krasnapolsky The dominant feature of the Dam Square is the 72-ft. tall limestone obelisk-shaped National Memorial Monument erected in memory of Dutch soldiers who perished in World War II. Also in the square is the trendy renowned department store Bijenkorf, the multi-brand fashion store Bonneteire, "Beurs van Berlage" (an old stock exchange which now serves as a concert hall and exhibition space), and the Amsterdam Diamond Centre

Khan Pulls Out from Pacquiao Negotiations British boxing star Amir Khan reportedly to have withdrawn from negotiations for a fight with Manny Pacquiao. The star expressed his dismay over the delays caused by Pacquiao’s camp for a bout that is planned for next year. Khan has aimed on Pacquiao after failing to convince Mayweather for a much bigger fight but as it turns out, his second option is off the list as well. Khan is now gearing towards his other targets and no longer wants to wait long.

October 20-November 5, 2015

Horoscope This week, you’ll be able to play an active part with a major focus on your work. Putting your best foot forward may not be easy but you will still be encouraged. This is a good time to take your business or key ambition to a new level.

You’ll be likely to put a lot of pressure on yourself as you will feel a greater responsibility to go ahead. Don’t forget to relax and rest to avoid burnout. Avoid signing anything important this week especially on Tuesday.

You may feel that you are being taken advantage by your family into taking a course of action that irritates you. Dealing with it sensitively can help swing things in your favor. You’ll be able to get on with plans and projects that had been piling up.

You may lack critical information early in the week, so it’s best to avoid making important decisions. Researching your options will help you make a wise choice. You may be promoted to a new level of success later in the week.

Avoid making decisions unless you know you’re absolutely right. Research and study your options for a few days. This week will also add sparkle to your romance zone offering more opportunities to find a special someone. An unexpected opportunity may appear.

Take extra care of your finances especially your credit card and personal data. There’s a potential for a mishap when you purchase so keep the receipts and associated paperwork. You may experience a boost in your financial sector later in the week.

This is a great time to relax and enjoy life. Take a look into what you’ve achieved and start listing your goals and plans for the next twelve months. Be sure to leave plenty of room for socializing and leisure to become part of your community.

There’s a potential for mistakes regarding money matters early this week. It is wise to go easy when purchasing big ticket items. Wait for a few days and assess if you really need that item. This will also help you save some cash. Travel plans and a good relaxing break look promising.

This week may let you feel pressured which could affect your romance sector and creativity. Try not to make any decisions until you’re on the right track. You can close a lucrative deal if you’re into real estate.

Play it cool this week as it is easy to get into a fight due to misunderstandings and mixed messages. Money matters will be less stressful and you’ll be able to go ahead and purchase those big ticket items. You will benefit financially over the weekend.

Although it’s best to take baby steps right now, a brilliant idea could take you further. This may involve a business plan and an insight into how well you succeed in your field. Try to avoid making impulsive moves.

You may receive practical advice from friends this week, especially when they know you’re in the wrong direction. Their advice may be right but they may not fully understand what you have in mind. Your financial sector will improve later this week.

Foodie Files: Manila Food Trip

Tried asking Purefood’s chef for the recipe, he declined and offered me a Tender Juicy King size red hot dog.

t's been a couple years since I've been back in Manila. This time, it was for my cousin's wedding and a new found passion for discovering the best of the Manila food scene. My father's new food business, Hot Rod's Filipino Grill has been quite the ride over the summer as I've been helping out as an unofficial taste tester. In addition to checking out new restaurants in Manila, I was also on a mission to find out what the hype was all about with the PureFoods Tender Juicy red hot dogs. After some online research and running into a PureFood chef at Trinoma Mall in Quezon City, it was confirmed that the PF TJ hot dogs are artificially coloured. All throughout my trip, street vendors were hawking red hot dogs in addition to the regular Pinoy street food. My first foray at the restaurants along Maginhawa was BRGR Project Burger where I was able to customize my own burger and even give it a name. There were so many options it was dizzying. I ended up naming my burger the Rizal Burger and it was delicious. Provenciano Restaurant was a formal dining restaurant featured a Filipiniana-Spanish offering an ambiance that reminded me of the colonial Spanish decor found in my grandparent's rural residence quite nostalgic. A quick visit to the University of the Philippines campus found us at the Mang Larry's Famous Isawan stall. The line-up for the famous and most authentic Pinoy

street food made me appreciate the "Isaw Pa More" love-in we've seen at Hot Rod's in Winnipeg. I didn't venture too far from home because the traffic to get anywhere in Manila these days is downright painful. Lilac Street in Marikina City offered just as many food options. Too many options

actually, and never enough time. Sr. Pedro's Lechon Manok might be a small stand but the chicken and liempo are mouth watering delicious. Sorry Baliwag and Andok's, I have a new love. In fact, there are a lot more restaurants in Marikina that I'll have to save for another time. Kain na tayo!

Jam Session: Bulls top Timberwolves at MTS Centre by Derick Ramos

Hockey isn't the only sport that can sell out the MTS Centre. The NBA came to town as the Chicago Bulls and the Minnesota Timberwolves battled to the delight of 15,294 basketball fans. In front of an energetic crowd, the Bulls topped the Wolves 114-105 but the sight of 2014 first overall pick and reigning rookie of the year Andrew Wiggins is what the fans came out to see. Wiggins, a Canadian native, scored just 2 for 8 from the field for 9 points in 24 minutes. Although it was the preseason, Wiggins wanted to give his best showing on home soil. “I just wanted to go out there and play hard.” Wiggins told the media. “The fourth quarter I felt like I got in a better rhythm." The Bulls led from start to finish and was led by guard E'Twaun Moore. Moore had 18 points while Wolves rookie Tyus Jones countered with 18 of his own to lead his team. Wiggins received the loudest ovation but fans were also thrilled to see future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Garnett and 2015 first overall pick Karl-Anthony Towns of the Wolves. Chicago wasn't short of star power as fan favorite Pau Gasol played while former Defensive Player of the Year, Joakim Noah, was relegated to cheering from the bench. Hall-of-Famer and Boston Celtics legend Robert Parish took in the action courtside. The NBA season kicks off on October 27th.
