Moron-in-Chief
I
t’s not everyday that someone would call the most powerful leader in the world a “moron” or anything close to that. But that’s what Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did. And for those who don’t know what it means, the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “moron” as a “very stupid person” or “a person affected with mild mental retardation,” which then begs the question: Is Donald J. Trump a moron? But whatever you might think about it, the real reason Tillerson called Trump a moron is actually “terrifying” as the
Daily Beast reported the incident on October 4, 2017. It reported that the insult came one day after "a meeting about Afghanistan in which Trump compared the process of reviewing strategy in the country to the renovation of a high-end New York restaurant." It then said that NBC News reported that “Tillerson called Trump a ‘moron’ after a meeting concerning the US' nuclear arsenal in which Trump asked for 10 times more nuclear weapons.” According to NBC News, the meeting was in July and Trump’s “insane request” was apparently

in response to information Trump was given about the US’ steady decrease in nuclear weapons since the late 60’s. The officials at the meeting were said to be surprised by his request, and had to explain to Trump “the legal and practical impediments to a nuclear buildup.” The NBC News reported further that Trump said several times that he also wanted more troops and military equipment. But officials told NBC News that no increase in the nuclear arsenal is planned. Soon after the meeting ended, the officials who stayed behind overheard Tillerson say that Trump was a “moron.” When a reporter asked Tillerson to confirm if he called Trump a “moron,” he didn’t dispute it. But what might sound “petty” is a serious problem… a very serious problem, considering that the person referred to as a “moron” is the most powerful man on earth who has at his disposal more than 5,000 nuclear warheads. And he wanted to increase that number tenfold? This man is not only a “moron,” he is the “Moron-in-Chief.” And he must be crazy, too! Dr. Strangelove Which reminds me of the 1964 movie, “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” It is a political satire black comedy film that satirizes the Cold War fears of a nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the United States. Although the Cold War is now over, the specter of a nuclear war is still very real. With North Korea threatening to attack the U.S. with a barrage of nucleartipped ballistic missiles, it has driven Trump closer to the brink of madness and self-destruction. The sad part of it is that the whole humankind would suffer, nay perish. In less than a year in the presidency, Trump has reduced the world’s only superpower to an impotent eunuch denigrated by rogue states like North Korea and Iran. When Trump addressed the U.N. General Assembly with a threat to “totally destroy North Korea” if the U.S. is forced to defend itself or its allies, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un

responded: “I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged U.S. dotard with fire.” Kim’s personal response marked an escalation of the word war between Trump and Kim. North Korea’s state-run news agency KCNA then released the following statement: “The mentally deranged behavior of the U.S. president openly expressing on the UN arena the unethical will to ‘totally destroy’ a sovereign state, beyond the boundary of threats of regime change or overturn of social system, makes even those with normal thinking faculty think about discretion and composure.” So, where is all this hyperbole leading? With North Korea conducting 19 missile tests and one nuclear test in 2017, North Korea is getting closer to its goal of developing a nucleararmed intercontinental ballistic missile that could target the U.S. North Korea is now believed to possess 60 nuclear weapons. Trump’s miscalculations But North Korea’s nuclear blackmail is only the tip of the iceberg. While the threat can be neutralized at a very high cost in lives and resources, there are a number of Trump miscalculations that could change the world order. In my column, “Trump’s geopolitical miscalculations,” (May 12, 2017), I wrote: “But the worst in Trump’s miscalculations in Asia was his decision to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a security and economic agreement between 12 countries led by the U.S. Seven of the member-countries hail from the Asia-Pacific: Australia, Brunei, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam, of which four are ASEAN members (Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam). Collectively, the TPP member-countries account for 40% of world trade. Ironically, it was the U.S. under the presidency of Obama who started the negotiations among the 12 countries. Unfortunately, while 11 countries ratified TPP in 2016, the U.S. Congress under Republican control failed – or refused – to ratify it in the last few months of Obama’s presidency. When Trump took over, withdrawal from TPP was one of his first acts – victims of

his vindictive assault on policies and programs that Obama implemented.” China fills the void With the U.S. out of the “big picture,” it is anticipated that China would step in to take the place of the U.S. in the TPP. It’s ironic that TPP, which the U.S. was instrumental in forming as a counterbalance China’s dominance in world trade, would end up circling in China’s orbit. But while the TPP might hurt the U.S.’s trade relations, there is nothing more destructive than Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the agreement last June. The agreement was adopted by consensus by representatives of 196 parties at the 21st Conference of the Parties of UNFCCC in Paris on December 12, 2015. To date, 195 members have signed the agreement, 168 of which have ratified it. By Trump’s withdrawal, the U.S. will join two other U.N. member countries – Syria and Nicaragua -- that haven’t signed on. On October12, 2017, Trump brought his war to the home front, launching an assault on Obamacare. He issued an executive order that stopped payments worth billions of dollars to health insurers to subsidize low-income Americans. It was a move health insurers have warned will cause chaos in insurance markets and a spike in premiums. The following day, Trump did what he’d been threatening to do and that is: pull out of a deal freezing and reversing Iran’s nuclear program if Congress and U.S. allies do not agree to strengthen it. In trying to justify his decision, Trump said: “As I have said many times, the Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into." Sad to say, what Obama put together in the eight years he was president, Trump dismantled them in eight months. And it would probably take another eight years –maybe more -- to put them back together. As someone once said, “Rome wasn’t built in one day, but they were laying bricks every hour.” In the case of the U.S., Trump is burning it, day after day. And he fiddled while doing it.

Marcos, Duterte and Aquino (Second part)
T
o many, Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr. was the best president Philippines never had. If only President Ferdinand Marcos didn't proclaim martial law in September 1972 and retired from politics after his two terms in Malacanang ended, Ninoy could have suceeded him. But fate intervened. He was killed in his homecoming from exile at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport (MIA). The rumor mills during those years were filled with stories that Ninoy was informed that Marcos was so sick and may go at anytime and that he should hurry home or someone from the Liberal Party, specifically Senator Gerardo 'Gerry' Roxas may take the leadership. So that's precisely what he did. And the shot at the MIA's tarmac was heard all over the world, and soon after the EDSA 'revolution'. Marcos and family went into exile in Hawai. The biggest beneficiaries on the death of Ninoy Aquino was his wife Cory and son Noynoy. Both
became president of our country. Their yellow symbol still lives now and have ardent followers, the likes of Senators Franklin Drilon, Leila De Lima, Francis Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino and Antonio Trillanes. The 'yellows' in the House of Representatives are led by Congressmen Edcel Lagman, Teddy Baguilat and Gary Alejano. The above names are the pain in President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's neck. They allegedly are conspiring to unseat him. Duterte was not even given the traditional honeymoon period even by media outlets identified with the 'yellows'. The Duterte government's war on illegal drugs and the alleged victims of extra judicial killings are common fares and dramatized by those photos prominently splashed frequently on pages of Philippine Daily Star and Philippine Daily Inquirer are testaments of the two national papers bias. Duterte as described by many writers as an unconventional president with a colorful

personality. He was the political promdi, considered an outsider, and his victory was described as an upset vs. experienced politicians mostly with national prominence. Some of them the likes of President Nonoy's handpicked Mar Roxas and Vice President Jojo Binay. His combative attitude towards his critics are always part of the fiery speeches he dishes out almost daily. He hates reading prepared speeches by ghost writers. Him being hot tempered is negated by the soft spot in his heart by crying everytime he remembers his mother. In the first year of his governance his popularity was conveniently high until recently the trust rating crashed amid criticisms over his brutal drug war, according to poll taker Social Weather Station (SWS). The question now posed by analysts if Duterte will be able to finish his full term, or he will take the Marcos path and stay in power on the imment overhaul of the constitution by giving the president a five year term with one reelection. That's good for another ten years. Only time will tell. The planned shift to federalism is steaming full ahead. The two main proponents are former Senate President Aquilino 'Nene' Pimentel of Cagayan de Oro and former Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno. The two have been making the rounds explaining the whys and wherefores and according
to reports they will head the commission to draft the new constitution. And in all likelihood, by next year the earliest and a year thereafter will be the latest the country will have a new charter. A referendum will follow where the barangay captains will

9 play vital roles. No wonder the scheduled barangay elections were postponed. The village heads should now toe the line, unless they want to be replaced. It bears close resemblance to what Marcos planned in 1971.

DJ spins hip hop in one corner. Two bars serve wine, craft beer, and specialty cocktails. Many guests enjoy the party atmosphere, mingling throughout the room holding drinks, appetizers, and desserts, but most of the crowd gather at the open kitchen watching with hungry eyes as four chefs battle for gastronomic glory. Kitchen Kumite, the culinary event of the season, took place September 24th and October 1st in support of Cancer Care Manitoba, presented by Allan and Amanda Pineda, the couple behind the Baon Manila Nights series of pop up dinners. Pronounced ' KOO-mih-teh', the culinary competition at the heart of the event is best described as an 'Iron Chef' type battle where teams of two professional chefs have 45 minutes to create dishes centered around secret ingredients in black boxes revealed only moments before cooking time begins.
Claire Snowball, representing Red River College's Food Services, is no stranger to competition. Although she is a winner of Iron Chef Winnipeg, Claire was still nervous about the battle. Her first thoughts were "How do we cook pork hocks in only 45 minutes?" Using the other black box ingredient, salted cacao, her chocolate crepes with chilli chocolate ganache were a hit with the judges however the team from Clementine Cafe won by only three points. RJ Urbano and Alec Armurao from Creme Del Essence were a pleasure to watch as they almost wordlessly moved throughout the kitchen in complete sync, a sign of two people who cook together every day. They finished early with six minutes to spare, creating two decadent dishes of seared flank steak and peach French toast with buckwheat honey, however were unable to beat the team from Sous Sol and Sydney's. All eyes were on the team of Mark Sobrevinas of Fruit by
the Slice and Masterchef finalist Jeremy Senaris, who have been best friends for more than 30 years. Mark is also no stranger to blackbox competitions and says he enjoyed the adrenaline, creating a dish with cashew-crusted lamb. Jeremy says the Kumite "brought back a lot of memories being in competition mode." Jeremy felt the time crunch and threw a nori garnish over his quinoa sushi rolls in the last seconds of battle. However the team from Hy's Steakhouse just edged them out of contention. Allan Pineda says "the Kumite is one small way of highlighting some of the great culinary talent that Winnipeg has to offer" and showcased local caterers and bakeries such as Cabesa Catering, Sugar Blooms and Cakes, and S Squared Patisserie who volunteered their time and dishes. Manitoba products appeared in each of the black box ingredients, including Hot Rod's Longanisa in the finals. continuation on page 11

Team Clementine ultimately won the belt, but the big winner was Cancer Care Manitoba. Allan says they raised over $5000 based solely on donations, sponsors, and volunteer work, including a cheque of $3000 from Topher San
Juan of No Frills, a major sponsor who supplied the majority of the pantry and fundraised money through the grocery store. Allan says he plans to make the Kitchen Kumite an annual event and has other culinary competitions planned for the year. Check out Baon Manila Nights on Facebook and Instagram for future events.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
Filipino Canadian Students of University of Manitoba by Leila Castro | Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com
I
n 2014, a study Understanding Intergenerational Social Mobility: Filipino youth in Canada was made by the Institute for Research on Public Policy. There were 650 Filipino youth in Canada surveyed focusing on Winnipeg, Vancouver and Toronto. The study found Filipino Youth, particularly males, are less likely to hold a university degree than their parents and their peers in other immigrant groups. Professor Phillip Kelly, director of the York Centre for Asian Research in Toronto and author of the study, cited three factors. First is the lack of money and time as most immigrant parents who came here were not fortunate to get jobs equivalent to the professions they practiced back home. So, they
took in multiple jobs to cope with financial hardship, thus not much time is left to oversee and assist their children. Another factor is the lack of role model for the Filipino youth with “deprofessionalization” of their parents. Another factor is the networks, information and mentors of the Filipino youth. According to Mr. Kelly, the social network of individual Filipinos tend to consist of Filipino-background friends and relatives, which are limited sources. Another observation was the networks within the Filipino community were segmented. An example is the separation that sometimes exists between those who arrived through channels leading to caregiver jobs and those who arrived through other channels. When 204 Filipino Marketplace started in November of 2015, the social media group that connects half of Filipino Manitoban households, we saw injection of new ideas, rich experiences and learnings from experts in the community, that

inspired and motivated fellow Filipinos. A lot who have interest in entrepreneurship emerged as business owners. Community issues were actively discussed by over 30,000 members and norms were openly challenged. We saw bigger gatherings and celebrations of Filipinos. At present there is massive information exchanges, and the Filipino immigrants are more united towards empowerment. With these positive developments in our Filipino Manitoban community network, I believe it is time to start more widespread conversations and encouragement to the Filipino youth to aspire for big dreams and realize those by pursuing post secondary education; so that someday our situation will be turned around, where there will be more Filipinos in the spectrum of higher paid professionals occupying key positions and leadership roles. Every day I drive my daughter to University of Manitoba. I feel happy whenever I see Filipino students in the campus. I thought of interviewing some of them to find out their ambitions and their reasons for pursuing a university education. Below are their very inspiring responses: “I decided to pursue a post secondary study because I want to have a settled life in the future. I also want to help my parents by getting myself a decent job and earning well. Being an accountant is my dream, going to a university to study Accountancy is my first step towards my dream.” - Maica Rodriguez “I pursued post secondary education because I see it as an investment towards the future. A degree can make a person more marketable in the work force, provide job stability and open many doors to higher level job positions; which means an increase in salary. Another reason that is more personal to me is -- I am able to find myself doing something I am passionate about. It can be argued that going to post secondary school is just like going to high school with more workload. Although it is more work, it is rewarding in the end if you found a program that
you enjoy being in.” - Kristine Agravante, arrived as immigrant in 2001 from Cebu City. “To learn things and find my passion.”- Mary Nichole Cruz, arrived here in 2006 from Pasay City “Post secondary education will give me the opportunities to find work in the field of Computer Science. It also gives me the chance to make international connections and meet people to help me in the future.” - Kyle Calinisan, arrived here in 2012 from Las Piñas City. “We migrated to Canada in 2013. My family was from Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte. I was 19 at that time and had 3 years background in Nursing. It was tough at first, I had to attend Grade 12 to be admitted in the university. Then an opportunity came, I stumbled upon a free HCA program, took it then later pursued post-secondary education. What made me decide to pursue a degree? Well aside from making my parents proud I strongly believe that higher education is important. I know that sounds cliché, not only will I achieve my dreams and goals by doing so, but I also want to have a better quality of life for me and my family. Although going in university is expensive, but in the end the money used is money well spent.” - Cherry Cagbabanua “Education is of great importance in today’s society. Pursuing a higher education, of course, gives opportunities for

career advancement. Not only that it has an advantage on your future career, there are also other reasons why I want to pursue further education. I want to explore, discover and learn a lot more information in my chosen career path. Also, I want to help my parents and make them proud, and repay to them the hard work they have given to be the person I am today.” - Kent Charles Cagbabanua “As a child, I was always fascinated in building and creating things, which sparked my interest in engineering. This specific mindset of mine throughout my middle and high school years, is what eventually led me to pursue post secondary education in the Faculty of Engineering.” - Mark Bautista, parents arrived here in the 1980’s “Pursuing a secondary education opens a door to a lot of opportunities. It increases chances of getting a better job, thus earning more money; providing a better quality of life for me and my family. Also for me, getting a degree shapes you as an individual, because you will gain more knowledge and develop new skills as you work yourself to success.” – Airah Ramos My admiration and respect for these youth. They bring so much pride to our community. We hope to see more and more Filipino Canadian youth making decision to pursue big dreams.
These Filipino Canadian students of University of Manitoba are determined to go for their passion and achieve their dreams.

204 Neigbourhood Watch Update : Patrolling Blake Gardens and Alexander-Brooklands by Leila Castro | Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com
O
n October 4 and 11, we patrolled Blake Gardens and Alexander-Brooklands. We were very happy to have five new patrollers join our group. For weeks volunteers Evo, Leonila and Charina had been communicating with us about their desire to join our activity and were just waiting for their schedule to clear up. Volunteers Fran and Ryan are residents of the areas we patrolled. For the two patrolling activities, we partnered with Norwest. Community workers and 204 Neigbourhood Watch patrollers Ponz and David helped us with the collaboration efforts.
Baggies used for drugs and weeds, syringes, knives and broken bottle pieces were recovered from parks and playgrounds. We took advantage of every chance to have conversations with the residents about safety. We also gave candies to children. Many expressed their appreciation of what 204 Neighbourhood Watch has been doing. One of them was Vivek Sharma, owner of Pizza Pizza at corner of Mc Philips and Logan. He said that he has been following the works of our volunteer group. So when Vivek saw the posting that we would patrol the area near his store, he immediately communicated

The supportive owners of Bakerite (located at 1030 Keewatin St.) Emmy and Manny provided delicious fresh from the oven spanish bread and pandesal with peanut butter. These treats and enjoyable chats after patrolling made us easily forget that we just walked for over 2 hours exposed to cold temperature. 204 Neighbourhood Watch patrols every Wednesday and we need more volunteers. Nadine Lustre finds strength amidst her family’s tragedy Nadine Lustre thanked her brother for giving her inspiration, comfort and strength. The 16-year old brother of the Kapamilya actress, Isaiah was found lifeless in their room and was rushed to Pacific Global Medical Center on Saturday evening, Oct. 7. He allegedly committed suicide. Nothing New There is really nothing special, surprising, nor stupid in the currently trending socialmedia street lingo such as “lodi” (reverse spelling of idol, without regard for the pronunciation; for, phonetically, it should have been “lodya”) and "petmalu" (jumbled syllabication of 'malupet,' which means virtuosic in the context it was being used). Plaridel These so-called codified language or linguistic change, usually coined by young people to provide themselves a sort of a
secret language or group lingo, has been in existence since time immemorial. For instance, the Philippine writer Marcelo H. del Pilar (1850–1896) used the pseudonym 'Plaridel' (a syllabic jumbling of his surname). Jeprox and the Rest of the 1970s In the 1970s, the Philippine music artist Mike Hanopol coined the word “jeprox” (syllable reversal of “project”; derived from Projects 1–8 in Quezon City where, according to Hanopol, many of his band’s fans hailed from). In fact, over the years, “jeprox” has become a recognized Filipino colloquial that means “old Rockers or Rock-music enthusiasts”; it may be regarded as a Filipino counterpart of the ‘’60s-originating term hippie (from “hip,” meaning culturally or fashionably cool), which in the 2010s has evolved into hipster, which means “young Indie/ Alternative music fans.” Some more syllabic-jumbling lingo that originated in that decade

included "haybols" ('bahay' / house), "ermat"/"erpat" (mother/ father), "repapips" ('pare'/friend), “dehins” (‘hindi’/no), “alaws” (‘wala’/none), and “senglot” (‘lasing’/drunk). Bagets and Back to the ’80s In the 1980s, inspired by the popular teen-oriented movie Bagets (1984, Viva Films), the term "bagets" (derived from the Filipino word ‘bago,’ which means “new”) has long become a widely used colloquial word in the Filipino culture that means “young ones.” Ona Ibas Om in the ’90s? In the 1990s, word-reversal lingo became a trend. For instance, "Naas oyat atnup?" (‘Saan tayo punta?’ / Where are we going?). The primary purpose of this was to allow groups of friends to converse with each other in public without others understanding what they were talking about. This way, they could talk about anything they want without worrying about eavesdroppers especially when the topic they were tackling was either confidential or risqué. Back to the Present So now, what’s new or wrong with the trending, newly coined words such as 'lodi' and 'petmalu'? They're simply the current generation’s contribution to the neverending linguistic evolution and development. Let time decide the fate of these words. After all, every word in a dictionary underwent this long process— from gibberish to colloquialism to legitimacy. And although some words succeed into becoming dictionary entries through time,
many fade away and get lost in the garbage of oblivion. Well, that’s the nature of etymology for you. The Last Leaf And, mind you, such linguistic corruption or the young ones’ urge to create their own secret language—no matter how absurd or funny sounding such coined words may be—occurs not only in the Philippines but also
in perhaps any other culture or country. For instance, in Canada, loonie (one-dollar coin) and toonie (two-dollar coin) are examples of coined words that began as simply parts of street lingo but which have eventually developed into beoming legitimate parts of Canadians’ everyday language… especially of those who love fried chicken on a Tuesday.

Ely Buendia’s Greatest Hits Live! Saturday, October 7, 2017 Pantages Playhouse Theatre Winnipeg, Manitoba produced by Pinoy Tribe Entertainment
Naming a concert “Greatest Hits” is wishful thinking when the artist is still writing and performing new songs and is still at his peak. Ely Buendia proved during his recent, second solo concert in Winnipeg, that he remains one of the biggest Rockers to have come out of the Philippines, and will be for a while yet. Yes, he did deliver wellloved hits of the Eraserheads, but he also included some newer songs, like “Gabi Man, May Araw Din,” which was commissioned for the Indie film Ang Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha. While a very sad subject, the song was hopeful and melodic with a searing guitar solo that Buendia executed with the passion of a true artist. By including n e w e r numbers like this on a “Greatest Hits” tour, Buendia proved that he still has his songwriting chops and has improved with age, like a good wine. Buendia was in top form, backed by the New York–based Wendell Garcia on drums, who
had joined him on his North American tour in 2015, the last time he visited Winnipeg. Rhythm guitar was handled excellently by Audrey Garcia of the Philippine all-female band General Luna, whereas Carissa Ramos of Mr. Bones and the Boneyard Circus more than competently took care of the bass and whose striking aura onstage stole the hearts of many in the audience. Only one moment left the ladies hanging when Buendia shared a private joke with the audience by starting a riff of an older Eraserheads song, “Toyang,” that audience members recognized and started singing along to. Buendia joined in on the joke, but the song clearly wasn’t on the set list—he stopped after a verse and carried on with the show. Good humoured heckling from the audience was met with a dry smile and solid musicianship from the unflappable Buendia who remained a model of cool, the quintessential laidback Rockstar from the moment he stepped on the stage in a red ruffled tuxedo shirt, white dinner jacket, and rainbowlit sunglasses. Mandatory hits included “Overdrive,” “Pare Ko,” “Alapaap,” “Magasin,” “With a Smile,” and of course, the finale of the evening, a rocking version—sharper and edgier than the original recording—of “Ang Huling El Bimbo.” Significantly, he paid reverential tribute to the music of his erstwhile band by dishing out a number of lesserknown songs that included “Spoliarium,” “Poorman’s Grave,” “Superproxy,” and “Shake Yer Head”; as well as throwing in a couple of songs from his other band, Pupil, such

as “Nasaan Ka?” Two years ago, he gave us a sadder, mellow version; but this time, with the entire audience singing along and his Gibson Les Paul Standard wailing away on the solos, he ended with high energy and sent home surely most in the audience satisfied. Opening acts included local musicians such as the Filharmonic Ensemble (a trio of flute, alto sax, and keyboard); Ragdolls, the local band who won Pinoy Tribe Entertainment’s Facebook contest; and an interesting collaboration of singers, musicians, and rappers from the groups Santribo and Lyrical Anxiety, featuring Conflict Dalubhasa and MJG and Arnold of PTE. It was an interesting mix of styles to open for Buendia, ranging from light Classical Pop, to Indie Rock (an original song cowritten by the Ragdolls’ lead singer and her sister hit the spot as an opener for Buendia’s brand of Rock). The rap ensemble, however, was in a league of its own, showcasing their vocalists and rappers’ machine-gun rap trade off that set the stage on fire throughout their set. The collective seemed to have enough energy and repertoire so as to need a concert all to themselves, which, according to Pinoy Tribe’s producer Marby Gutierrez, would be happening in the near future. A highlight for the local community was when Pinoy Tribe producer Marby Gutierrez, using the moniker MJG, joined the rappers’ delight by delivering an admirable rap tirade of his own. Ely Buendia’s “Greatest Hit Live” 2017 was hosted by CKJS DJ Chester Pangan.

have read so many articles about SMILE. Smiling can be good for your health and slows down the heart and reduces stress. But smiling isn’t just good for you; a genuine SMILE blesses those on the receiving end as well. Without saying a word, it can tell others that you like them and that you are pleased with them. A SMILE can hug someone with love without giving them even the slightest touch. Life does not give us a reason to SMILE. But when we see a heartfelt SMILE on a child’s face, or through aged wrinkles, our hearts are encouraged. SMILES are also a hint of the image of GOD in us. In the Book of Numbers, we get an indication that GOD “smiles”; “The LORD makes His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you “peace”. Those words are a favor of GOD on a person’s life, asking GOD to SMILE on His children. So today, remember that you are loved by GOD, and that He is pleased to be

gracious to you and to shine His face upon you. Let us ask the LORD to make us pleasing to Him and to have His face shine on us. As the Lord graciously smile on us, let us pray that we may find someone today with whom we can share GOD’s love through a SMILE. HERE ARE SOME QUOTES ON “SMILE” My children are the reason I laugh, SMILE, and want to get up every morning, A gentle word, a kind look, a good-natured SMILE can work wonders and accomplish miracles. Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a SMILE, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest complement, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn life around. I enjoy jokes, smiling and making people SMILE. I may be a little different, but that’s OK, who wants to be normal anyway? Share your SMILE with the world. It’s a symbol of friendship and peace.
Because of your SMILE, you make life more beautiful. The real man SMILES in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave in reflection. SMILE is the key that fits the lock of everybody’s heart. Through my eyes, that I may scatter rich SMILES in sad hearts. Let us meet each other with SMILE, for the SMILE is the beginning of love. Lighten up, just enjoy life, SMILE more, laugh more and don’t get so worked up about things, GOD is always at our back and call. Marrying for love may be a bit risky, but it is so honest that GOD can’t help but SMILE on it. Beauty is power; a SMILE is its sword. Nothing you wear is more important than your SMILE! The greatest self is a peaceful SMILE that sees the world smiling back. A SMILE is happiness you’ll find under your nose! ALWAYS KEEP YOUR “SMILE”. THAT’S HOW I EXPLAIN MY LONG LIFE, WITH GOD’S LOVE AND CARE. YOUR SMILE COULD BE A MESSAGE OF CHEER FROM GOD TO A NEEDY SOUL.

Steve Mason Slipping? by Ryan Reyes
T
he Jets are .500 after 6 games into the 2017-2018 season. After losses to the Leafs and Flames they bounced back nicely with a 3 game winning streak by defeating the Oilers, Canucks and Hurricanes. Optimism was abundant and Jets nation was on a hockey high. Then the Blue Jackets came into town. They aren’t a cellar dwelling team anymore. They’re a well-oiled machine whose identity is similar to our Winnipeg Jets; a team built with speed and skill in mind. That speed and skill was on full display on Tuesday as the Blue Jackets beat the Jets to most of the pucks and really were just the faster team. It wasn’t even close. It was perplexing to see that the Jets didn’t have their legs under them. You could notice a few times that they were making slow reads. A team can still be competitive even if they’re being beaten to the puck often but the odds heavily tilt in the other team’s favour if you’re giving away the puck. Although Christmas is still over 2 months away the Jets were in a giving mood and unfortunately the giveaways lead to Columbus goals. Many Jets fans were pointing out that Mason was weak in net and that Hellebuyck would have given us a better chance. Yes a couple goals were of the softer variety but the rest couldn’t be blamed on Mason. Fans forget that he made stellar saves in the first period and the score may have been 7-2 rather than 5-2. If our defense plays solid in his next couple of losses or if he lets in some terrible goals more often than not, then I’ll concede he’s slipping. You have to give Columbus credit. They were faster and made far fewer
mistakes than us. No need to panic just yet. It’s early in the season and by the 1520 game mark we’ll be able to tell what this year’s version of the Winnipeg Jets are all about. Hoping we can bounce back against a tough Minnesota Wild team this Friday. This next little October stretch is filled with tough, competitive teams: Minnesota this Friday, at Pittsburgh on the 26th, at Columbus on the 27th, back home vs Pittsburgh on the 29th and at Minnesota on Halloween night. I would be fine if they were still .500 after that stretch, wouldn’t you? Fast Facts Nikolaj Ehlers is off to an excellent start and is leading the team in points with 7 after 6 games(5 goals, 2 assists). Side note: he was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week after leading the league in goals in the first week. Notable Quotable “Everybody feels bad for Steve because it’s not been the easiest start. But we know he’s a really good goalie and we haven’t given him a lot of help…” - Patrik Laine

DOST’s bambooo charcoal technology helps Pangasinan firm in bamboo charcoal making
I
n a bid to boost their town’s economy, a company based in Bayambang, Pangasinan is set to go into large-scale charcoal making using bamboo. CS First Green Agri-Industrial Development made the decision after one year of piloting various machines from the Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI). “We pilot-tested four kinds of equipment: the DOST-FPRDI bamboo charcoaling kiln, hydraulic briquettor, crusher, and drum kiln,” says Levin Uy, company president. “Using bamboo wastes from our own plantations, we found that these technologies truly help create jobs, and can help Bayambang build a thriving bamboo industry.” Uy adds that their sister organization, the Kasama Kita sa Barangay Foundation, has found the drum kiln especially useful for making charcoal using solid waste collected from the barangays. According to DOST-FPRDI’s Engr. Amando Allan Bondad, “The bamboo charcoaling kiln is a special kind of oven that turns out
high quality charcoal for industrial uses. The drum kiln, hydraulic briquettor and crusher, on other hand, are used for creating charcoal briquettes - solid charcoal which is easier to ignite, burns slower, and emits more steady heat than the ordinary kind.” The charcoaling kiln generates two products: high quality bamboo charcoal and industrial vinegar or pyroligneous liquor. A powerful cleaning agent, bamboo charcoal is widely used in industries to purify many kinds of substances – water, air, precious metals, alcoholic beverages, among others. It is also widely tapped in agriculture, and in pharmaceutics and cosmetics manufacturing. Industrial vinegar, on the other hand, is a high-end product that comes from the kiln’s collected and condensed smoke. In demand abroad especially in Japan, it serves as a disinfectant, bathroom deodorizer, and organic pesticide. It is commonly used in the medicine, cosmetics, and food processing industries. Engr. Belen B. Bisana, chief of DOST-FPRDI’s Bio-Energy and
Equipment Development Section, says, “We are happy to work with a company that has its own bamboo plantation. Bamboo is not yet popularly used for charcoal in the Philippines, but it is an ideal material since it grows fast and can be re-harvested without harming the environment. The part of the plant that is used is the stem base, which is usually left behind after the poles are harvested.” According to Uy, “One year of field testing with DOST-FPRDI was encouraging to us. We saw the Institute’s capacity to give good technical assistance, as well as the potential of bamboo in boosting the progress of our community. We look forward to getting to know other bamboo processing technologies which may prove useful to us.” The piloting of the bamboo charcoaling kiln was part of the recently concluded project “High Quality Charcoal from Bamboo for Industrial Uses.” It was funded by the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). Duterte declares liberation of Marawi
P
resident Duterte has declared the liberation of Marawi City from Islamic State (IS) invaders.
The pronouncement was made in his address to government troop during his seventh visit in the war zone
during the nearly five months of conflict. Colonel Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of the task force battling the
militants, told reporters that Duterte’s declaration was symbolic because the military cannot really say that Marawi is 100 percent cleared. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesman Major Gen. Restituto
Padilla Jr. said 30 IS stragglers remain in the area, including six to eight foreigners, among them the Malaysian financier of the Marawi siege. For his part, AFP chief of staff General Eduardo Ano later clarified that the fighting against continued, describing the clashes as mopping operations. Pro-IS gunmen occupied parts of Marawi on May 23 following a foiled attempt by security forces to arrest Hapilon. The military said Hapilon was killed in a dawn offensive alongside Omarkhayam Maute, one of two brothers who allied with Hapilon to plot the takeover of the city. The IS movement in Marawi is made up of different armed fundamental Muslim groups: the Maute Group, Abu Sayyaf, Ansar Khalifa Philippines and some elements of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).
