Helping Persons who are “Ulyanin” and with other Symptoms of Dementia by Leila Castro | Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com
T
wo months ago, Jennifer Licardo, the Education Manager of Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, reached out to 204 Neighbourhood Watch to establish a partnership. The objectives of said tie up are to educate our group so that we will know what to do if in our patrolling we encounter an individual showing symptoms of the Alzheimer’s disease; and to spread awareness about dementia or Alzheimer’s and the programs and services offered by the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba to the person with the disease, the family and the professional care giver. Jennifer conducted an information session with us. It made me recall some posts I have seen at 204 Filipino Marketplace about elderly kababayans who were lost or needed help to go home. In our session, I asked Jennifer out of curiosity if how many Filipinos have availed of their support programs. She said that, so far, she has not seen one. Although there was one Filipino referred to them, but the person and the family did not show up. Through this article, I’d like to echo to the community what we learned from our information session, including what to do if there is concern that a member of your household might have dementia, and how to help a person you encounter in the community
who is showing symptoms of said health issue. The terms dementia and Alzheimer’s are often interchanged, but the two are different. Dementia is a group of symptoms, while Alzheimer’s is a disease. Dementia is an overall term for a set of symptoms that impact memory, performance of daily activities and communication abilities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. It is a progressive, degenerative brain disease that causes changes in the brain. While usually affecting people over 65 years old, younger people can develop dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, the youngest that Jennifer has seen registered in their program is 29 years old. The risk increases as the person ages which is why we often describe older people as “ulyanin”, but still dementia or Alzheimer’s is not considered a normal part of aging. Jennifer explained that while many of us from various ages claim to experience forgetfulness, but when you have the Alzheimer’s disease, you have forgetfulness that affects your day to day functions. An example is misplacing items and finding them in odd places, such as seeing your keys inside the microwave oven; or not remembering how to get back home. Aside from forgetfulness, these are the other symptoms or warning signs: difficulty performing familiar tasks, problems with language, disorientation of time and place, poor or decreased judgment, problems with abstract thinking, misplacing things, changes in mood and behaviour,
changes in personality, and loss of initiative. It is important to learn how to better communicate with persons with dementia, to help build relationships, to interact with and to include them in community activities. Here are some ways to help you approach and communicate with someone with dementia: 1. Identify yourself, e.g., “My name is .. I’m your neighbour from down the block” 2. Address the person by name; speak clearly and at a normal pace 3. Talk about things of shared interest 4. Back up your words with actions or gestures 5. Maintain eye contact during the conversation 6. Ask open-ended questions and allow time for the person to reply 7. Rephrase their responses to check your understanding of what the person is telling you 8. Suggest a word or idea if the person is searching 9. Listen actively and acknowledge the person’s feelings 10. Enjoy the time you spend with the person. If your grandparent or anyone in your home is displaying
the warning signs, Jennifer recommends to have the person checked by the doctor for proper diagnosis. She also encourages the family to get in touch with Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. If you see a person in the community who is showing symptoms, Jennifer advises the following as the way to approach and help the individual: 1. Ask the person where he or she lives 2. Check information in the person’s identification, or if the person is wearing the MedicAlert bracelet 3. Ask if there is a relative to call 4. If the person does not have the
MedicAlert bracelet and you do not find any contact information, CALL 911 5. Keep distance. Do not bombard the person with questions The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba exists so that all Manitobans affected by dementia receive the help they need today and have hope for the future. It offers free supportive counselling services, education and support groups. For more information, contact Jennifer Licardo at 204943-6622 (Winnipeg), 1-800-3786699 (Manitoba) or email her at alzeducation@alzheimer.mb.ca.

any call it Cold War while some call it World War III in the making. And there are a growing number of people – experts – who believe that it is a case of two self-centered leaders with bloated egos. One of them –Donald J. Trump – is the president of the mightiest and wealthiest country in the world. The other one is Kim Jong-un, the sociopathic “supreme leader” of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea), one of the poorest countries on the planet. Trump has at his fingertips the “doomsday code” that could unleash more than 5,000 nuclear missiles that could blow the world to smithereens while Kim has, at best, a few nuclear warheads that he claims could hit any city in the U.S. The problem is that the North Koreans don’t have the slightest idea what America’s nuclear weapons could do their country… or could they care less? Heck, does it matter to the North Koreans whether they instantly
perish from a nuclear attack or die slowly from hunger? And this makes a difference between the two peoples: the Americans are consciously protective of their individual freedom and affluent capitalistic existence while the North Koreans’ existence is hopelessly helpless. In other words, a potential loss of 100,000 American lives from a nuclear attack gives the Americans reason to detest war with North Korea while North Korea’s leader would welcome war with the U.S. with the belief that China would also go to war in defense of North Korea. Didn’t China’s Mao Zedong do just that in 1950? Indeed, China’s Xi Jinping today is as committed to North Korea as Mao was during the Korean War. How about Russia’s Vladimir Putin? With his megalomaniac obsession with power and 5,000 nuclear warheads at his disposal, he might be tempted to join the war on the side of Kim Jong-un. While it would be unimaginable for China and Russia to go to war against the

The Donald and Kim Road Show U.S. for the sake of Kim, we can’t preclude an accidental war from erupting in the Korean Peninsula, a war that could instantly spread to South Korea and Japan, both of whom have mutual defense treaties with the U.S. In addition, it could also drag Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia, all of which are treaty allies of the U.S. Psychological warfare But these are all “theoretical” because right now, I believe that Trump and Kim are just waging psychological warfare (psywar) with words, and they know it. The term is used to denote any action, which is practiced mainly by psychological methods with the aim of evoking a planned psychological reaction in other people. Various techniques are used, and are aimed at influencing a target audience's value system, belief system, emotions, motives, reasoning or behavior. It is used to reinforce attitudes and behaviors favorable to the originator's objectives, and is sometimes combined with black operations or false flag tactics. [Source: Wikipedia] Given this definition of psywar, who do you think is winning the “word war” between the U.S. and North Korea? Take for example when Trump threatens to destroy North Korea and the ”Little Rocket Man” Kim, Kim responded that North Korea would retaliate against this “declaration of war” from a “mentally deranged U.S. dotard” by downing U.S. military plans and exploding a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean.” North Korea’s foreign minister has characterized his nation’s weapons coming to the U.S. as “inevitable.” First Strike While neither side is winning any territorial concessions, North Korea is gaining political capital. By test launching ballistic missiles and detonating hydrogen bombs, Kim has achieved notoriety and earned the grudging respect of her neighbors. But what else could they do? Attack North Korea? Japan and South Korea wouldn’t do that. Not right now. But the question is: Would the U.S. eventually launch a “first strike” against North Korea?

So far, the “doves” in the U.S. Congress are prevailing over the “hawks” that couldn’t muster the courage to advocate for a “war policy” against North Korea. The doves – mostly Democrats – insist that the best way to deal with North Korea is to impose sanctions under the auspices of the United Nations or the European Union. But the hawks – mostly Republicans – said that sanctioning North Korea wouldn’t work. They said that it is imperative that the U.S. should consider other alternatives. One such advocate is Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.). In his commentary, “Why U.S. should strike North Korea ‘before it hits us,’ “ in The San Diego UnionTribune (Sept. 28, 2017), he wrote: “Let’s be clear. North Korea continues to threaten the United States with a nuclear assault. North Korea has the capability to launch a nuclear attack and San Diego would be a primary target. No more pontificating, no more hypothesizing, no more armchair quarterbacking. The North Korean nuclear capability is real; there is no more timeline. The existential threat has arrived. “Among these alternatives is a declaration of war, and, if the president were to request one, I would fully support the commander-in-chief, knowing the right time to strike and hit North Korea is before it hits us. The timetable for action should be decided by us, not our adversaries. The U.S. should take North Korea at its word when it has repeatedly threatened attack. I wrote about this in March 2015. The ‘Hunter Doctrine’ -- “You go in, you kick butt, and you leave” -- works in North Korea. “I’ve been to war in the modern sense and it should not be the case that millions of Americans go to bed worrying about an attack from a Third World dictatorship that managed to build a nuclear weapon. North Korea is not Russia; it is not China; it is not a peer country. North Korea believes it has weighed the U.S.; it believes it has measured the U.S.; but we will not be found wanting. The only way North Korea can harm the United States is if we let

it. At this time, we can still seize the initiative. This is the reality of the world in which we now live, and pretending the threat doesn’t exist is naive and an option I refuse to entertain.” Hunter Doctrine Actually, the “Hunter Doctrine” is nothing new in today’s “special operations” (special ops) warfare, which consists of highly trained operators known as “Special Forces.” He said it could be applied in North Korea, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, some countries in Africa, and possibly even Iran. Some Special Forces are organized and deployed to uncharted territories using “lily pods” (as in a frog jumping across a pond toward its prey). Lily pads are small, secretive, inaccessible facilities with limited numbers of troops, Spartan amenities, and prepositioned weaponry and supplies. They are “scattered across regions in which the United States has previously not maintained a military presence.” This brings to fore the question: If the U.S. is going to deploy special forces in lily pads in the Korean Peninsula, where would be the most logical places to deploy them? Using the “Hunter Doctrine,” lily pads can be positioned south of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) where U.S. Special Forces could easily sneaked into North Korean territory to, as Hunter says, “Go in, kick butt, and leave.” Sooner or later, Trump and Kim would get tired – nay, bored! – of their psywar and resort to a shooting war. The question is: who would use nuclear weapons? If the U.S. strikes first, she could knock out North Korea with conventional weapons using “Prompt Global Strike” strategy, which is to cripple North Korea with conventional weapons in less than one hour. If the U.S. fails to knock North Korea out, it would give North Korea time to counterattack with nuclear weapons, a scenario that Americans fear most. Meanwhile, the Donald and Kim Road Show continue to keep the world on the brink of extinction.

I
was and still am a basketball fan. I love the aggressiveness of Oklahoma Thunder hotshot Russel Westbrook, the perimeter shooting of the splash brothers of Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Every basketball fan love Lebron James, Kevin Durant and Dwayne Wade. I admire most among the coaches Erik Spoelstra, not because he is a Fil-Am but he is a tactician and knows how to build a championship team. Now let's talk about governance. It has similarities vis-vis in assembling an athletic championship team. The best team ever assembled in governing Philippines was formed by the late strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos. He had a search committee and was able to recruit the best among the best minds. He didn't concentrate on his picks from classmates, roommates and provincemates unlike the one whom you know who. Of course I am referring to President Duterte of Davao from the region of Mindanao. But of course appointing to key positions his own people is his prerogative. Cesar Virata of Cavite was finance minister, Rafael Salas of Negros and Ernesto Maceda of Manila became executive secretary, Francisco 'Kit' Tatad of Catanduanes was press secretary, Blas F. Ople of Bulacan was labor secretary, Estelito Mendoza,
Ricardo Puno and Vicente Abad Santos of Pampanga, alternately headed the justice portfolio, Carlos P. Romulo of Tarlac was foreign affairs secretary, Jose Aspiras of La Union was tourism head and Jose Rono of Samar was secretary of the local government. See how President Marcos equitably distributed governmental powers through the line departments. Now let's know more of Ferdinand Edralin Marcos was lawyer who graduated in the University of the Philipines in 1939 and passed the bar as a topnotcher. He was an outstanding congressman, became a senator and was the rival of then Vice President Diosdado P. Macapagal as presidential bet of the Liberal Party (LP). The two were party mates of the opposition LP. Macapagal prevailed upon Marcos to allow him first as the party's standard bearer with a promise that he will only serve one term. ( In those years the constitution allow the president to serve one term of four years with one reelection). Macapagal was pitted against then reelectionist President Carlos P Garcia.. The 'poor boy from Lubao' drubbed the 'balak beauty' of Bohol. Past Forward, Macapagal reneged on his promise. Marcos bolted the Liberal Party and joined the rival Nacionalista Party. He sought the help of Eugenio Lopez,
Blessed Forgetfulness
O
ur Suite is just enough for the two of us. A OneBedroom Suite in a senior home at the West End of the City of Winnipeg, where I made frequent steps from here and there. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the bedroom from the kitchen, I often forget what I was planning to do when I got there. Some researchers have come up with an explanation for this phenomenon. They propose that a doorway serves as an "event boundary." Some theory say that a doorway signals the brain that the information held in memory can be filed away - but it's frustrating when I'm standing there trying to remember why I came to the bedroom. However, forgetfulness can be a blessing. When I shut the
door to our bedroom at night and settle down to sleep. it's a blessing to forget the worries of the day. When I think of the fact that Jesus called Himself "the door" (John 10:7-9) I gain a new appreciation for this metaphor. When sheep enter the pen. they enter a safe place protected from thieves and predators. For believers, the Great Shepherd is the door between us and our enemies. Once we enter the sheepfold, we can "forget" all dangers and threats. We can enjoy divine forgetfulness and rest in the protection of the Great Shepherd. Christ is the door that keeps us in and keeps the dangers out. A SHARED BOND (Ephesians 2:11-18) When a couple requested our assistance to sponsor their child

owner of media outfits like Manila Chronicle, ABS-CBN, Meralco and other business concerns. He was the kingmaker of that era. The foxy Marcos won over Macapagal. The nation was on its way to become an economic tiger and in his reelection bid he beat Sergio Osmena Jr. of Cebu for his second term. Marcos wanted to remain in power and so he wanted to change the constitution via a constitutional convention. From a presidential form to parliamentary, and Marcos to become the prime minister. Scandal broke as news spread that some delegates were bribed. Unable to suceed in changing the constitution of his own liking, he declared martial law instead in September 21, 1972. Opposition leaders, media men and civil society group leaders were jailed. Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino, the popular senator from Tarlac who could have been president if only Marcos had not declared martial law stayed much longer than most. His colleagues in the opposition the likes of Jose W. Diokno, Nene Pimentel, Teofisto Guingona and many leading political figures in those years were freed after months in the stockades. Ninoy was kept in isolation in the army camp of Fort Laur in Nueva Ecija with then Lt. Voltaire Gazmin as his warden. He was there for years. Ninoy had a taste of freedom and regained his family life when he was allowed by Marcos to travel to the United States for his heart bypass operation. He was enjoying his stay in the United States when he was told that Marcos was very sick and may die anytime. His political advisers told him that he would miss his opportunity for the presidency if Marcos will expire and he's not in the country. So he decided to go home. (More on the next issue).
who was born in the Philippines, we gladly assisted them find the best and legal way to have their child come to Canada and enjoy life with the, What a joy we have in our hearts when we learned that we came from the same province in the Philippines and have the same love for Christ - the joy of meeting someone else who love Jesus must be even greater. It is so thrilling to share together the amazing reality of the freedom from sin we have through Christ. For all who know Jesus, there is a shared bond, a oneness in Christ (Galatians 3:8), a joy of fellowship that can brighten even the darkest day. Praise God that He brings a bond of unity to all who know Him as Savior. What a miracle it is dear Lord, that you can bring together people of all tribes, tongues, and nations to be like-minded in Christ - to share a bond of love and affection. Christian fellowship builds us up and binds us together. After all the process and patiently waiting, the couple we met have their sponsorship approved and living happily with their child in Canada.

The "Vision" Manila - I am addressing the Christian Community regardless where they are geographically located, or what tribe and race they belong to. My question, is: have you seen the face of Christ Jesus be it in a vision, or dream, or art portrayal? Let me tell you my story. Saturday morning of 17 September 2017, I woke up, around nine o'clock. I slept late from a four hour long afternoon meeting for I got home by 12:00 midnight owing to heavy traffic jam. For my morning devotion, I viewed and listened to a testimonial video, "Jewish Professor Saw Jesus Christ in an Open Vision". I was, however, distracted by the incessant barkings of the dogs that constrained me to place the celfon unit close to my ears and shut down my eyes to intently listen to the recording drowned by the cacophony of sounds. \With my eyes closed, suddenly I saw the spontaneous appearance of a wooden Cross and before it is a "Face". The face have intense eyes, sports a short beard, but not with a long hair. The complexion is not fair; but, tanned, like a golden brown skin. The countenance I clearly saw is definitely not the outline of the face we saw in postcards, or religious frames portrayed as
Jesus Christ. I was shocked. Recovering my composure, immediately I circulated a text message to my circle of friends in the faith community. The Director General of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship of the Philippines, Christy Jutare, replied requesting my eMail address. She is sending an image shared to her by a fellow Christian when she was still posted in Eastern Europe, drawn by an eight year old kid that claimed she saw the face of Christ in a vision; but, blurry until she met a stranger - a carpenter that exactly looks like the image she saw in her vision. (Google https://akiane.com). The portray as sketched by Akiane, was affirmed by another kid who was declared clinically dead; but, returned to life and testified he had a glimpse how Christ Jesus look like when he saw Heaven. Goosebumps was all over my body as I looked at the "face". If the image have a wooden cross behind as background I will say the image is the exact representation of what I saw in my vision. The pasted image in this article is the image I " saw". Twenty-one years ago, 13 August 1996 I was

diagnosed of terminal ailment Leukemia - Cancer of the Blood. My lead physician, the late Dr Rudy Narvas, did not exactly say that I am a goner in six months. What he said was, "Bob, you will still enjoy the fireworks of the new year; but, after that our team could no longer guarantee you will still be around beyond 1997. What we can gurantee, however, is: we will do our best to slow down the deterioration of your health". Providentially, I received miraculous healing - I survived Leukemia. Some medical experts opined my healing might be mere remission, which might recur on the twenty-fifth year. Regardless, of the experts' opinion, as long as I have breath, I will keep on testifying and affirm, God heals. Let me conclude this piece by stating that I am not encouraging anyone to idolize the image I saw in my vision. That would be idolatry. What I encourage is, pursue the Giver of the gifts of vision and dreams. He who grants miraculous divine healing is worthy to be worshipped.

Huge Lake Trout and Monster Pike
A
s soon as the leaves start to turn and the days get shorter, many of our readers know well that is the signal to start targeting the huge schools of greenback walleye in the Red River and at Pine Falls. Many anglers wait eagerly for this time of year and even go so far as to book vacation weeks in October to be able to take full advantage of the heavy action. While I do more than my fair share of greenbackin’, the fall season is
also primetime to target all kinds of other species in Manitoba. On a recent trip I took along fellow Filipino Anglers Association of Manitoba members Jomar Sarmiento and Justin Surla to hit up the hot fall northern pike and lake trout bite out west and up north. We fished at Lake of the Prairies just north of Russell first to target trophy pike. At this time of year, the big ones congregate in the shallow waters off of the
main channel. This reservoir that lies along the Manitoba and Saskatchewan border has a healthy population of Master Angler sized pike and it is not unheard of for each angler to catch several over the 41inch mark in one day during the fall. We mainly casted medium to large sized spoons and bigger swimbaits focusing our efforts on shallow flats 6 feet or less in depth. We didn’t need to search too long as the first area held good numbers of fish with a nice sized pike attacking my topwater Zara Spook offering on the first cast. At the end of the day we successfully boated over two dozen big northerns with the biggest being a 46.5” monster caught by Justin on a silver/yellow Blue Fox spoon. We headed north that same evening to Clearwater Lake just past the town of The Pas. After a few hours of sleep we were up and at ‘er again to target Lake Trout on this huge lake. Every fall,
dropping water temps initiate the annual laker spawn where hordes of these aggressive predators invade the shallows. Casting 5 inch pearl white Cabela’s swimbaits on 1/4oz jigs was all we needed to get trout after trout to attack them. We parked the boat over a 22-28 foot reef where surrounding water was 45 feet deep or more. We caught well over 70 lakers with the biggest
being a 40 inch giant that took several minutes to get in the net. Other species that are on the go at this time of year are four pound plus smallmouth bass at Lac Du Bonnet, various Master Angler trout at stocked ponds in the west, and giant channel catfish in the Red. Take a day or two off this fall from chasing greenbacks and take advantage of the fast action for other species.
Justin needed help to hold up this 46 inch Master Angler pike.

to the 1840s until the early 1870s. With the presence of the railway the large sandbar in the nearby Red River as a prime docking area for water transportations carrying cargoes and travellers became no longer useful. The Red River trail eventually became what is today Highway 75 and later a divided highway in 1988 when the southbound lanes were added. Left in the median, the United Point Church was saved from demolition because the "government could not pave the cemetery and went around it instead". Once a flourishing town with a hub of activity Union Point had a post office, a school, a general store, and a town hall. However, it did not stand the test of time due to several factors such as changes in economic conditions, changes in transportation network and depletion of its natural resources as what happened to other ghost towns or abandoned villages across the southern part of Manitoba. Located about 40 kms. south of Winnipeg the church with a wooden pinnacle pointing skyward is designated as a Manitoba Municipal Heritage Site and is described as a "Gothic Revival-style structure that succeeded an 1887 Presbyterian facility". or so many years we have been passing by a little white-steepled church with a few headstones in the grassy divide between the north and south bound lanes of Highway 75, Province of Manitoba. Finally, one day on our trip back from Minneapolis, Minnesota, we decided to make a stop to satisfy our curiosity. So glad we did. Greeted by the sign "Union Point United Church Built in 1887, Destroyed by Fire 1939, Rebuilt in 1940", Lita and I, our daughter Marie-Anne and her husband Jerry together with our granddaughter Cassy, explored the site and after several photo
ops headed home to Winnipeg. So, why the little church and the cemetery between two roads of a high-speed traffic divided highway? The little white church is known as the "United Point United Church". It was all that remains of a Manitoba ghost town once known as "Union Point" that vanished by the 1950s so named due to its location as the stopping place where steamboats and paddlewheelers from the Red River and stagecoaches from the Red River Trail met for provisions into the praries. Red Red trails are ox cart trade routes popular in Manitoba in the 1820s

GET READY, WINNIPEG! HOT HULA FITNESS IS HERE!
A
new dance fitness style has finally arrived in Winnipeg, and it’s capturing the hearts of Island ladies all over our city. HOT HULA fitness® is a fun and exciting dance workout that combines easy to perform movements inspired by the dances of the Pacific Islands and performed to the sounds of Polynesian drum beats fused with funky Reggae and hip hop music. Created in 2009 by US-based Samoan fitness professional Anna-Rita Sloss, Hot Hula fitness® was born from her desire to create a fitness method that represented her culture, not just in movement but also in spirit. The result is a fun, relaxed, and effective total-body workout that Certified Hot Hula fitness® Instructor Nenette Alejandria Mayor knew the Winnipeg community would love.
As a hula dancer and instructor with over 40 years of experience, Nenette knew that Polynesian dance was an effective workout. She dropped pounds and inches after giving birth to her two babies thanks to hula. “You need to workout regularly to get results, and the easiest way to stick to a regular workout is to choose one you love. For me, that was hula dance.” So, when she heard about Hot Hula fitness®, Nenette knew she had found her passion. Working out to drum beats infused with Reggae and Hip hop music held a special appeal for the 40-something mom, who also has a background in Hip hop dance. And she was not alone. “I personally love anything to do with Hawai’i, and I love Old School Hip hop, Dance and R&B, “ says Glonor Penaflorida Holmes, a busy mom of two,
“so when I came across a Hot Hula video on Facebook, I got so excited about it! Naturally, I had to tell Nenette what I found and of course, she already knew about it!” Hot Hula fitness® is all about the core and muscle isolation. It’s a low-impact workout, so there’s no jumping as there is with Zumba. The knees are bent throughout the exercise which works the leg muscles, and the controlled swaying movements of the hips work the abdominal muscles. All you need are comfortable clothes, a sarong if you have one, and a bottle of water to stay hydrated. No shoes required. And be prepared to sweat! The workouts are effective, fun for all ages and fitness levels, and easy to follow. “You don’t need any dance experience,” says Nenette, whose

classes are a mix of her former students and new students who have never used their ‘hula hips’. In fact, Nenette’s previous students start from the beginning along with everyone else. “Being a past Hula student of Nenette,
I thought, ‘this should be easy!’ Wrong,” says Glonor. “This challenges everything I've learned from traditional Hula! Which is great!” continuation on page 23

Classes started in September, and her students have loved “smiling with their hips”. “Unlike other fitness classes I've attended, I don't think I'll get bored with this class. Love the infusion of reggae and hiphop music to Polynesian moves,” says Marjorie Soldevilla, new student and mom of 3. “Since taking this class I have increased my leg and core strength,” says Sophia Epp, mom of 2. “I will be bikini ready by December!” If you would like to try out Hot Hula fitness®, Nenette would love to see you! Horoscope You might have to attend discussions and consultations. Both your love life and connections to your colleagues will be on the agenda. Whatever the relationship, you’ll fare better if you can avoid being too intense. This might be difficult at the time, but as long as you don’t say anything you might come to regret, you could find others show up with opportunities and options you might never have considered otherwise.
Give yourself a break and try to have a more positive approach. If you’ve convinced yourself that there is nothing you can do, accomplishing something could certainly be more difficult. Think that you can do it and keep repeating this to yourself. You’ll find that it becomes a self-fulfilling prediction. You can accomplish whatever you put your mind to if you stick with it.
Taurus April 20 - May 20 They could light again the romance in a long-term relationship or encourage a budding connection to become more intimate. However, you see and keep private certain feelings between you and another. You have a lot of fun together, and no one else needs to know about it. They more serious side of your personality, when being diligent could bring rewards.
Making some wise investments, such as channeling extra cash into a creative project, could be worthwhile. There is a possibility that you could earn more money, but there is also a chance that you’ll spend it all. And as long as you don’t decide to make some expensive romantic action around, you can benefit. They could have a more serious bias, but a heart-to-heart talk could be very revealing.
There could be a lot of discussion at home and this could lead to some decisions that positively transform a key situation. On another note, your social life shine around and they could be the perfect time to hold a celebration or grand occasion. Know that it could be very lively though. Putting yourself in your partner’s shoes and could help you understand his or her perspective.
PAHALANG
It could be difficult to see eye to eye with certain family members, and this might continue over the course. However, this could also encourage you to have a discussion to resolve this matter. If things reach a critical point, this could be a good thing because the energy around the situation is fully developed for change. Be willing to listen to others’ feelings and you may find they aren’t so very different from yours after all. A compromise is possible.
There may be some things that need a solution that you’re more waiting to talk about. A positive focus that could make you eager to express yourself and share what is most important to you. They could be an opportunity to listen to your intuition and gently open the subject with a friend or trusted confidant. You may say more than you mean to, but this could release tension and leave you feeling much better as a result.
While you may be inspired to follow a new path that shows plenty of promise, you might feel excited if it means moving too far outside your comfort zone. It’s really a question of belief. This can be a good time to drop any that are outdated and holding you back. However they could bring some drama to the home front. It is also excellent for a celebration or gettogether, even if it is a little noisy and mischievous.
A passionate attitude early that could mean you is irresistible drawn to someone and finds it hard to turn your attention to other things. This could be a temporary phase, but it could leave you feeling frustrated if the person in question doesn’t feel the same way about you. Your wellness sector might encourage you to forget about your discipline and routines and go all out to enjoy yourself.
If you’re thinking about going on a trip they might encourage you to go for it. If you’ve been busy with various tasks and assignment or aspects of your life have been intense lately, getting away from it all might seem like the perfect way to unwind and feel good. There is a focus on change and transformation that could see you letting go of situations that no longer serve you.
You may have mixed feelings that cause you to delay a decision. You may draw some interesting opportunities to you, but it’s also possible that you could resist them. This is different, as you’re the kind of person who delights in anything new and fresh. If you need more time, take it, but this option could work out even if it requires hard work. Your social life sparkles with a lively encounter to brighten your days.
If you and another are finding it difficult to see eye to eye, putting yourself in their shoes could help you understand their thoughts and feelings. You could experience some conflict regarding a goal or plan, and this might make it hard to progress as much as you’d like. You don’t have to agree, but a compromise might help you to make the best of a difficult situation. Key insights could also change your perspective concerning a financial matter.

ncreasing Manitoba’s minimum wage to $15 per hour, as some are calling for, would disproportionately hurt young workers, potentially resulting in between 8,100 and 18,300 youth job losses, according to a new report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). Manitoba’s minimum wage will increase to $11.15 an hour on October 1, 2017, which was calculated using an indexation formula that was legislated in June, 2017. But groups, like the Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL), have been urging the provincial government to rapidly increase the province’s minimum wage to $15 per hour — which would represent a 35 per cent increase. “While hiking the minimum wage may sound like a good idea, the evidence shows that it’s a job killer,” said Jonathan Alward, CFIB’s Director of Provincial Affairs for Manitoba. “A $15 minimum wage would particularly affect employment opportunities for Manitoba’s youth — a segment of the population who already suffer from high unemployment.”

Increasing the minimum wage to $15/hour would be a job killer for Manitoba’s youth: new analysis Using 2016 Labour Force Survey data, CFIB’s report examines the effects of a $15 minimum wage in each province. Nationally — if all provinces jumped to a $15 minimum wage — between 184,800 and to 422,400 youth jobs would be put at risk. These estimates include the number of direct job losses and fewer jobs being created. “Setting minimum wage is always a challenging issue for any government. The Manitoba government has resisted the temptation to follow Alberta and Ontario by raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour,” Alward added. “While the vast majority of Manitoba’s employers hire at rates above minimum wage, several important sectors of the economy, including retail and hospitality — sectors that employ a large number of young people — will be the hardest hit. We will continue to call on the provincial government to introduce measures to mitigate the impact of Manitoba’s annually indexed minimum wage by introducing a training wage (for inexperienced workers, similar to Nova Scotia) or a gratuity wage (for workers who earn tips).”
Let’s get social
Currently, over 60 per cent of minimum wage workers in Canada are young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Past research has shown that, as minimum wage rises, these young workers become the most vulnerable group in the economy. Often, as their wage costs increase, employers will choose to hire fewer youth or hire more experienced adult workers — instead of younger workers — at the same wage rate. “Minimum wage is a blunt tool to help low-income workers,” concluded Alward. “We will continue to advocate for more practical and effective ways – like further reducing income taxes and helping low-income workers upgrade their skills.” Background: Other provinces have taken steps to move to a $15 minimum wage. In 2016, the Alberta government was the first provincial government to announce an increase to the minimum wage rate to $15 per hour by 2018. Ontario followed suit with a plan to increase the minimum wage rate to $15 per hour by 2019. Most recently, the Government of British Columbia removed the deadline to implement
a minimum wage increase to $15 per hour by 2021 until a review can be completed. For the complete analysis including methodology, download the report. To arrange an interview with Jonathan Alward, CFIB’s Director of Provincial Affairs for Manitoba on the provincial results, please
call 204-982-0817 or email msman@cfib.ca. You can also follow CFIB Manitoba on Twitter @cfibMB. CFIB is Canada’s largest association of small and mediumsized businesses with 109,000 members (4,800 in Manitoba) across every sector and region.

FREE DIABETES EXPO: HEALTHY EATING–HEALTHY LIVING

Certified Dietician
Jeremey Senaris, MasterChef Canada (Filipino Journal Archives).
Jeremy Senaris, MasterChef Canada’s Season 3 runner-up and one of Winnipeg’s very own, has been using his newfound popularity to encourage people to make small changes to their diets to benefit their overall health. On October 14, Senaris will be at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba to give a keynote speech at Diabetes Canada’s free expo, Healthy Eating-Healthy Living. “It’s going to be about how chefs influence the way that people eat,” he said of his talk. “There are ways to eat healthy and still eat very well, and not even feel like you’re on a diet or have restrictions. You can still eat food that looks like it came from a restaurant.” Senaris, who has launched a new career as a personal chef since being on the popular show, has many simple tips to help people eat healthier, such as substituting brown rice for gluten products and sea salt for table salt. He also uses plenty of vegetables, spices, and healthy oils in his cooking, while remaining true to his Filipino roots. “We know that individuals from certain ethnic backgrounds, including some people who have immigrated from the Philippines, have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes due to genetic factors,” noted Diabetes Canada. “Events like this allow us to educate the community on the risk factors and on healthy lifestyle changes that can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in some cases. It also allows us to support those who are living with or caring for someone with type 2 diabetes with information that can help them better manage the disease.” \This is something that Senaris understands all too well. “My family has been struck by disease, with my mom passing away from cancer,” he explained. “I know what it’s like for a family to deal with somebody who is sick. I’m all about supporting families and I feel like this is for a good cause.” The Diabetes Expo will also feature an Ask-the-Experts Panel (with a dietician, pharmacist, certified diabetes educator, and a foot care Nurse), exhibitors, and diabetes risk assessment tests. \The event runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants are encouraged to register by contacting Carly Kowalchuk, Community Engagement Coordinator, at 204-925-6192 or carly.kowalchuk@diabetes.ca.

SSS clarifies contri hike
Social Security Commission (SSC) Chairman Amado D. Valdez on Thursday said the pension fund is still studying the possible implementation and effects of a monthly contribution rate increase, contrary to reports that it will implement a contribution adjustment by January 2017. “The contribution increase is our last option. However, should the institution be pushed to do such action, to secure the fund life of the Social Security System (SSS) and for the benefit of our current and future members and pensioners, we would like to assure the public that the contribution rate increase will be at the minimum amount only. We are trying our best to find ways to generate income for the pension fund," Valdez said. Valdez said that under the current administration, based on the latest data, collection from members’ contributions as of the end of first semester of 2017 increased by 9.62 percent to P78.64 billion. SSS investment income also increased by 12.27 percent during the same period from 16.09 billion to 18.35 billion "We are looking at various income-generating schemes
including disposal of sub-optimal properties to maximize revenues from these real estate properties," Valdez said. Talks on SSS contribution rate increase happened in the wake of ongoing Senate hearings on the SS Reform Act of 2017. Senator Richard Gordon, author of the bill, said the SS Charter Amendment will be a landmark bill which he will push for passage by end of this year. "We strongly support Sen. Gordon's mantra that we should work, save, and invest to prosper. Right now, SSS is the best and affordable savings mechanism for our workers," Valdez said. Based on the latest pension simulation by the SSS Actuarial and Risk Management Group, a member with an actual monthly salary of P30,000 at the time of his retirement with 45 credited years of service will have a basic monthly pension of P15,700, or only 52 percent of his last salary under the current P16,000 monthly salary credit (MSC) ceiling. If the MSC ceiling will be adjusted to P30,000 by 2022, his estimated monthly pension will be at P29,300 or about 98 percent of his last salary at retirement.
2017 A W A R D S
The proposed bill to amend the 20-year old SS Charter is currently being deliberated at the committee level in the Senate and was listed as a priority bill of the LegislativeExecutive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) Executive Committee. SSS eyes the charter amendment proposal as one of the long-term solutions that will make the pension fund viable and sustainable to further serve its future members and pensioners. One of the major provisions of the proposal is the rationalization of the powers, duties and accountabilities of the Social Security Commission (SSC). With the rationalized powers, it will make it easier for the SSC to diversify SSS investments to generate and boost earnings of the pension fund, and to further improve the benefits being disbursed to its members. The bill, when enacted into law, will also allow the Commission to condone penalties on delinquent contributions by employers and employee-members, and to determine appropriate monthly salary credit and contribution tables based on actuarial studies for the stability and viability of the pension fund.
