Prairie Nurses Take The Stage
Prairie Theatre Exchange presents a story on an early immigration of nurses, featuring two FilipinoWinnipeg actors, namely, Stephanie Sy, as Pennyl and Duchess Cayetano as Puring. The story written by a Filipino playwright, Marie Beath Badian, is part romantic comedy, part farce, part cultural history, celebrating her mother’s courage to find a new life in a small town in Saskatchewan. Prairie Theatre Exchange opens its 2018/2019 season with Prairie Nurse – a story of welcoming that is part farce, part romantic comedy and part cultural history. Running from October 3 to 21, Prairie Nurse, is playwright Marie Beath Badian’s love letter to her own mother’s immigration story. Penny and Puring arrive in small town Saskatchewan from the Philippines in 1967 to answer Canada’s call for nurses, taking on two-year contracts at the local hospital. Small town life is far from simple as cultural clashes, homesickness, and the amorous but dim-witted goalie from the local hockey team complicate the women’s lives. On the surface, this is a farcical romantic comedy based on the mistaken identity of two Filipina nurses. But it’s also a time capsule that allows us to open up a specific period in Canadian history – “Expo ‘67: Canada Welcomes the World”. And as we reflect on today’s political and cultural climates, it’s also a perfect time to consider that welcoming newcomers – though often imperfect in its execution – wasn’t always so difficult. “The play really takes place in this moment,” says director Ardith Boxall. “Even with the colonial associations that the centennial now holds for us as Canadians as we try to work through our history, it is a remarkable time capsule to open up – an era of change and hopefulness, of learning and welcoming
people from around the world. And that story belongs to many Canadian citizens.” After its premiere at the Blyth Festival, Prairie Nurse has taken the stage at three more Canadian theatres before making its home at PTE. “What accounts for its amazing trajectory so far is its glowing sense of humour and heart alongside its urgency,” says PTE Artistic Director Thomas Morgan Jones. “This play is so many things: it is an immigration story; it is a Filipina story; it is a story of transformation; it is a story about what it means to make a home; and it is an absolutely brilliant comedy.” Prairie Nurse stars actors Dutchess Cayetano as Puring, Pamela Halstead as Marie Anne, Kristian Jordan as Wilf, Rayna Masterson as Patsy, Ross McMillan as Miles, Robb Paterson as Charlie and Stephanie Sy as Penny. The creative team features Director Ardith Boxall, Set & Costume Designer Brian Perchaluk, Lighting Designer Hugh Conacher, Sound Designer jaymez, Stage Manager Leslie Watson and Assistant Stage Manager Ali Fulmyk. Tickets for Prairie Nurse are on sale now. For ticket information and show times, visit the PTE Box Office on the 3rd Floor of Portage Place, call 204-942-5483, or visit www.pte.mb.ca.

No level playing fields in Phl politics
I
n two weeks or so, the aspirants will make a beeline on offices of the Commission on Elections in the Philippines . I oftentimes used this line in my columns in this space: ‘ The circus is coming to town ‘. In a democratic setting an election is deemed necessary and a must. An election held freely for people to pick their choices. No intimidation, no threat and the use of what we use to know as triple G. Not Genady G. Golovkin, the Kazakhstan famous boxer, but Guns, Goons and Gold. Presently there are several kinks in our electoral system. If only we could return to the post war election process, methinks our country could be better. The people will elect a better breed of leaders. Unlike today those who are really qualified can’t and wouldn’t run for several reasons. Those who run are those who have so much money to throw away and view election expenses as an investment. That they are imbued with the high ideals of public is more false than true. Let’s revisit the past. In the early years, elections were held
in November and officials were elected after serving four years without term limit. They can hold on the position as long as people vote for them, except for the president who was eligible for one reelection only. The imposed three term limit resulted to politicy dynasties. When the governor or a mayor is no longer eligible to run, the housewife or the son take over. In many cases, the wife get elected and the husband, the former mayor will reclaim the post after the wife’s one term. And after the three term expired again, the son will take it from where the father left. And maybe the father is the now governor of the province. And look what happened. They moved the elections from November to May. The months before May are the most expensive months for candidates. It is in these preceding two months of March and April where school kids are on vacation, and meaning athletic tournaments like basketball and volleyball are on season. The kids lacking in financing to pay for their uniforms and other expenses will be approaching candidates
for contributions. Even the poor but well meaning candidates have to shell out, otherwise... It is either in March or April where every sitio in each barangay put up ‘pabasa’ during Holy Week celebrations. The committees of the sitios will make a round of the candidates and solicit donations either in cash or in kind. It can be biscuits, colas or construction materials. Very expensive indeed for anyone running for public office. It is in May where fiestas and santacruzans are held. It is one of the most expensive months for any candidate running for political office. So a candidate, before plunging into the hustings, he or she should find out if the finances are adequate inorder to launch a decent campaign. It is not in anyway a level playing field. I am one of those many who wanted to see a return to the post war electoral system. In the present setting, those who are willing to spend bundles during election time will be running for public office. And it can be expected that in many towns, cities and provinces of the country, the well entrenched politicians will be running unopposed. We have witnessed that in previous elections and it will happen again in this coming elections. Editor’s Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga

What happened to the ‘sweetheart deal’ with China?
T
wo years ago, President Rodrigo Duterte – freshly installed as president – went on his maiden trip to China, expecting a grand welcome. And yes, indeed, the Chinese gave him a red carpet welcome with all the fanfare worthy of royal visitors. For four days, he enjoyed the treatment accorded him. Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed him like a prodigal son who was lost in the wilderness of America’s hegemony in Asia. Duterte was impressed with the Chinese “miracle” that brought the country, from the “The Sick Man of Asia” to the world’s second economic power after the U.S. Heck, he must have mused: “If China could do it, so can we.” He probably figured that if there’s one country that can help him make the Philippines into another economic power, it’s China, not America. And before he wrapped up his state visit, Duterte spoke before an audience of China’s
corporate leaders. He announced – to the whole world – his military and economic “separation” from the United States. “America has lost now. I've realigned myself in your ideological flow," he told the CEOs in Beijing. "And maybe I will also go to Russia to talk to Putin and tell him that there are three of us against the world: China, Philippines and Russia. It's the only way." Sweetheart deal Xi must have been tickled pink when he heard Duterte “divorcing” himself from a marriage with America that he believed didn't do any good to his country. He has been saying that China’s financial help was the key reason for his pivoting to China. In reciprocation to Duterte’s “pivot,” China was going to treat him like her new “little brother,” who’s coming home at last. Indeed, Duterte’s state visit to China was a resounding success. And as a “dowry,” the Chinese offered him a “sweetheart

deal.” Duterte signed a total of 27 deals -- $9 billion in “soft loans” and $15 billion worth of direct investments from Chinese firms in railway, port, roads, energy, and mining projects. Everything seemed to be going just fine since Duterte came back home with deals totaling $24 billion. Now, he can proceed with his pet project, “the golden age of infrastructure” under his ambitious “Build, Build, Build” program, which would be in lock steps with Xi’s ambitious “One Belt, One Road” global initiative to connect three continents from Asia to Europe to Africa. Where is the money? A year later, I read a news item, titled: “Is China withholding funds from Duterte?” “Beijing's pledge to deliver $24 billion in aid and investment to the Philippine leader's government and hometown has failed to come to fruition,” the report said. What’s going on? Many experts and analysts had suggested that China might have been withholding the funds until the “bilateral relationship” is firmly consolidated. And most importantly, how the two countries would resolve their territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Okay, so that’s what China had wanted all along, huh? It has always been exploration for oil in the waters off the coast of Palawan, particularly the mineralrich Recto (Reed) Bank. Think about this: The WPS has an estimated 11 billion barrels of oil, 190 trillion feet of natural gas, and 10 percent of the world’s fishing resources. Isn’t that enough for Xi to drool? If China takes full control of the WPS, her foreign oil imports – which accounts for 80% of her oil consumption -- from the Middle East and East Africa passing through the Malacca Strait to China would be drastically reduced. That would certainly resolve China’s “Malacca Dilemma.” Duterte must have realized then that Xi had taken him for a ride, professing that China was there to help his “little brother,” which reminds me when Americans used to call the Filipinos, “little brown brothers.” So, what else is new? Slowly, Duterte began
shifting back towards America, asking her to provide assistance in combating the threat of international terrorism in his country. Duterte’s move was subtle, but Xi is a master strategist. He has an eye for subtleties. Nobody in his sane mind would loan $24 billion without assurance and a guaranteed collateral. But while “assurance” is cheap and easy to give, “collateral” is a more serious and complicated situation because it’s not for Duterte to give and he knows it. He has to deal with the Constitution’s restrictions when it comes to sovereignty and territorial integrity. Joint exploration Another year passed and only two projects were completed: an irrigation project worth $73 million, and two bridges in Manila worth $75 million. That’s a total of only $148 million! What about the other $23.852 billion? Indeed, the biggest concession that Duterte was willing to give China was a joint exploration of the WPS. But why would he offer such a concession with nothing in return? During his last trip to Beijing, Duterte told Xi, “We intend to drill oil there, if it’s yours, well, that’s your view, but my view is, I can drill the oil, if there is some inside the bowels of the earth because it is ours.” Xi’s response was: “We’re friends, we don’t want to quarrel with you, we want to maintain the presence of warm relationship, but if you force the issue, we’ll go to war.” Ooops! That must have scared the hell out of him. He’s been telling everybody, including the Chinese, that the Philippine military would be massacred in a war with China. He was being defeatist; he shouldn’t have said. Principled pragmatism That left Duterte with one option, which is to use what diplomats call “principled pragmatism.” It’s a strategy “designed to get maximum results from a delicate situation, without sacrificing anything,” which is done by finding common ground of interest. The idea is to get the most from the country’s aggressor – China – without provoking her. There is another term for “principled pragmatism.” It’s called “shakedown,” which is what organized crime use to extort from business owners.

Typically, a couple of mobsters would go to the place of business. They’d accuse the business owner that he is doing business in the mob’s territory. They would then give the owner several options: Relinquish ownership of the business or share the profits. If the owner agrees to share profits, the mobsters will tell the owner that he is now under the mob’s “protection.” Which reminds me of Xi’s promise to “protect” Duterte from any plan to remove him from office. It did not then come as a surprise when early this year, Duterte proposed a 60-40 split for any joint oil exploration with China. He reasoned, “Rather than fight, what can we get?” What he’d get is the Xi’s protection. But we don’t have to fight and we don’t have to give up our rights to the WPS either. I happen to believe – like many Filipinos do – that China will not go to war against us. That’s the least she would do because she could lose the economic power she had built over the past 40 years. Remember also that the Philippines is protected by the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT). Duterte shouldn’t wait and should begin oil exploration now. To delay it further would only give China more time to build more bases in the WPS and deploy warplanes, missiles, and warships that are within striking distance of the entire country. The Philippines should also consult with the U.S. (her treaty ally), the ASEAN nations, the other claimants to the disputed region, and the other U.S. treaty allies – Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. They all share common interest in the region. Maybe Duterte should change his belief that “We cannot win a war with China” and instead adapt the mantra, “No guts, no glory,” which poker players use effectively. At the end of the day, one wonders: What happened to the Philippines’ “sweetheart deal” with China? It would have been mutually beneficial without bringing the territorial disputes in the WPS into the overall calculus. But Duterte failed to see beyond the $24-billion loans from his “big brother.”

Let’s open Portage and Main. Here are the facts: The barriers are falling apart.
We will all benefit economically.
Tourism works when we do.
The city has to spend millions of dollars to repair the barricades regardless of the outcome of this vote. Removing them is budgeted at $6.1 million.
Businesses go where people go. Removing the barriers will stimulate economic development, encouraging new storefront business and tax revenue for the city.
As one of the most famous intersections in Canada, Portage and Main could be a major public meeting place again as well as an even bigger tourist attraction.

Maui, the "Valley Isle"
T
he colour of autumn even long before the snow falls triggers our senses for travel to warmer places just as wild geese of the north begin flying south for winter refuge. A sun getaway from the winter is perfect for rejuvenation, physically and mentally. With its beaches, historic towns, exciting hotels , natural attractions that include humpback whale-watching, and unique aloha spirit we discover the "Valley Isle" of Maui a wonderful vacation paradise. It takes only 45-minute Hawaiian Airlines flight from the "Garden Isle" of Kaua'i to Kahului Airport of Maui, the second largest of the six Hawaiian Islands open to tourism. Only 64 kms. long and 42 kms. across (which means that all must-see points of interest are easily reachable), Maui which means "life" to its approximately 155 thousand inhabitants is popularly known as the "Valley Isle" because the island is basically covered by multiple green valleys caused by underwater volcano that erupted many many years ago before British explorer Capt. James Cook see the island in 1778. The island of Maui is named for the demi-god Maui, known as "Maui tiki-tiki" or Maui the Wonder Worker, the superman of Polynesian mythology which is a part of the Hawaiian creation story. It is believed that demi-god Maui possesses supernatural powers like capturing the sun from the summit of Mt. Haleakala or slowing it down to bring sunlight to the islands. The wonders of Maui are
many from the historic old whaling town of Lahaina to the amazing sunrise at Haleakala (House of the Sun), from the royal resorts of Ka'anapali to the scenic drive along the world-famous heavenly road to Hana, from the soaring "Iao Needle" to whale-watching of humpback whales that migrate to the Hawaiian Islands warm waters each year after a 3,000 mile journey from Alaska. Maui has the largest dormant volcano in the world, the Haleakala which is also its highest peak at 10,023 feet. Maui's historic town of Lahaina, where the largest banyan tree in the world is found, used to be the capital of the Hawaiian archipelago until 1850 before Honolulu. The last sugar cane mill in Hawaii can also be found in the island. The Honokohau Falls located in the West Maui Mountains is the second highest waterfalls in the United States. Maui has been voted "Best Island in the United States" for more than twenty years and the "World's Best Island" by Travel + Leisure magazine. Visiting Kaua'i and Maui from late December to early January allows us to comfortably enjoy the samples of the islands' paradise.

Horoscope Walls and long, narrow corridors take you around corners and through doorways, yet there’s no indication that you’re going in the right direction. You could feel like a rat in a maze. Instead of wandering purposeless, stop and ask for help. You might not have noticed that if you look up, there are knowledgeable beings there that are willing to give you advice based on their high perspective.
You must be aware of a lot before you commit yourself one way or another. Don’t get so stuck in your ways that you insist on having the one true answer without really considering the options. The people around you are appropriate to get annoyed with your narrow-mindedness, for this is how you will be viewed unless you stop and take a considered look at the whole picture.
Don’t try to stick your nose into someone else’s business, even if you think you know the right way to proceed. Quietly step into the background if things aren’t going the way you’d like. People probably have strong opinions, and they won’t be swing in any direction. The best you can do is taken care of yourself. You will probably find that this means you shouldn’t be seen or perceived.
PAHALANG
Your mind may be working overtime in order to solve the riddles. You may have gotten yourself confuse up in a deep mental drama over a series of recent incidents. It’s quite possible that the reality of the situation is that you’re simply making a big deal over nothing. In which you will face the harsh reality that comes as a result of your over-the-top thinking.
You may feel as if your smile is not welcome. It may seem to you like there’s some sort of gloom and doom to people’s attitudes that makes them unwilling to accept any sort of good news. Don’t let this stop you from maintaining your own cheerful state. It’s important that you not probe too deeply into the reasons behind other people’s behavior now.
Don’t hesitate to go with your idea when something simply doesn’t sound right. Keep careful track of things, for you will find that the smallest detail will make the biggest difference. Stays focused and try not to get caught off guard when emotional issues come out of nowhere and disturb your thoughts. Trust yourself regardless of what’s going on around you.
You may feel as if your hands are tied and you’re faced with absolutely no options. Don’t hopeless over a situation that seems impossible. Think of yourself as a terrific magician who can burst out of the strongest chains. You have tricks up your sleeve that can help you escape just about any situation in which you find yourself.
Your unwillingness to speak could get you in trouble. You may hesitate to share what you know for fear of what others might think. You should realize that you’re using this as an excuse to hide what’s really just selfishness. Share your knowledge with others and you will be amazed at the knowledge that comes back to you in return. Keep in mind that you may need to wait for it.
People will lose confidence in you if you can’t seem to make up your mind. This is a good time to take a stand on an issue that you may have been hesitating about lately. What they don’t realize is that you’ve been working overtime to process all the information. Now it’s time to express orally what you’ve discovered mentally.
Perhaps there’s someone who’s adopting a sort of “parent knows best” personality that’s starting to irritate you. There may be a great tension between you and someone older. Take a breather. Realize that this person isn’t being critical or judgmental but just giving you advice. You should open your eyes and understand that this advice could be very useful.
You will be breaking and jointing to share big news with your friends. Perhaps you just received an important package or piece of information and you can’t wait to spread the news. Be careful about who might be lurking around, however, because there could be others listening in. They may not necessarily be acting in your best interests.
There’s suitable to be a comfortable feeling about that should make you feel quite secure and nurtured. Perhaps you’re feeling protected by a strong force, maybe an internal one, that’s reminding you that as long as you stay within the lines, everything will be fine. There’s a familiarity to things that will make it easy for you to across any rough waters.

Four parenting styles
F
irst, it is important to understand how your parenting approach may be contributing to the problem, especially in a culture that has made discipline a dirty word. To speak of a parent disciplining a child today evokes images of unreasonable anger and brutal beating. That's not biblical discipline. Two case studies - one sociological and the other biblical - show us what Godly discipline is all about. Here are some different parenting styles that produced different responses among children: 1. THE PERMISSIVE PARENT This style represents parents who are HIGH IN LOVE BUT LOW IN DISCIPLINE. These parents are generally
fearful, afraid of messing up and damaging their children's psyche, so they never set firm boundaries. Permissive parents tend to produce children with feelings of insecurity, low self-esteem, and inferiority. Although these kids feel loved, they are never sure of their limits and therefore very unsure of themselves. 2. THE NEGLECTFUL PARENT This style represents parents who are LOW IN LOVE AND LOW IN DISCIPLINE. This is the worst of all because they do not show any kind of care. The parents' neglect may not necessarily be intentional - they may simply be in the midst of their own traumas and chaos, like an addiction or an abusive situation. They don't purposely desire to neglect their kids, but
they don't know how to deal with their own issues adequately and don't have the tools to be healthy parents. Their children tend to grow up with little or no lasting relationship with their parents and develop deep emotional scars. 3. THE AUTHORITARIAN PARENT. This style represents parents who are LOW IN LOVE AND HIGH IN DISCIPLINE. These parents have high expectations and control. Communication between parent and child involves arguing and fighting, especially when the child is old enough to fight back. This kind of parent is not content just to win the war; they have to win every battle too. The abundance of control can lead to a child developing a strong sense of safety. Authoritarian parents squeeze their kids until the kids can't wait to leave home, and as soon as they do, they tend to act out because they feel provoked to rebellion. 4. THE AUTHORITATIVE PARENT. This style represents the best combination for healthy parenting: HIGH IN LOVE AND HIGH IN DISCIPLINE. This kind
of parent is compassionate yet firm. They have clear boundaries but also very loving. These kind of parents respect and honor their children without compromising his or her disciplinary needs. The result is a child high in selfesteem and equipped with good coping skills. This kind of parent balances love and discipline, without compromising either,

produces well-adjusted kids who maintain a positive relationship with their parents. All of us want to be in style 4, and probably most of us think we are. But take a moment to consider: If you had to pick a style other than number four to represent your worst moments as a parent, which would it be?

"People Are People" (They Have Different Needs) Many people mistake their personal taste or choices as the universally default taste or option for everyone. So, once they find something unappealing to them, they assume that it should therefore be unappealing also to the rest of the world. This behavior qualifies as being egocentric, which means that the person believes that his
taste or preferences are the only choices that matter, whereas those of others either suck or are wrong. "So we're different colours And we've different creeds And different people have different needs...." "Light and Shade" (Do We Change or Remain the Same?) Do people really change, even without experiencing extremely life-turning situations? On the other hand, could a person stay the same in character even after undergoing desperate or trying circumstances in his life? Sometimes when we assess our own selves, looking back to our childhood or youthful versions, and then compare these with our present forms, we have the tendency to think that we remained the same. But did we really remain the same? Do we really know ourselves that much, enough for us to know if we really remained the same or if we did change after all? Sometimes I like to think that I did not change, that I am the same person I used to be, say 30 or 20 years ago. But, thinking more deeply about it, I'm feeling that I did change to a different person after all. If that should be the case-that I am now a very different
person today compared with the old me--then I just hope that I have rather become a better version of my old self... Because to think that I have instead unknowingly become the reverse or, at the least, a worse representation of my old self breaks my heart. "Be proud to wear the colours that you call your own Be loud, speak out when you want the world to know Be strong, hold the flame for everyone to see Be weak...if you want to love" "Whatever Possessed You" (Never Dampen Your Spirits) When a full-fledged poet is in a dire transitional time in his life, the greatest things that can lift his spirits are positive thoughts and ideas of bright new horizons and new opportunities and possibilities. He is thinking of participating more in various community events; pursuing all his book projects; and looking into engaging in other worthwhile activities. The only way from darkness is light. The only cure for misery is grabbing better opportunities. The only way to succeed is to love and respect oneself and to leave the past behind and stay focused on the foreseeable future. "November cold frost bites Deep as the snow flowers form This bed is colder than chloroform "Never darken my door Whatever possessed you all Somewhere there's an end to this Woe betide me I wouldn't dream of it..." Sa Madaling Salita Kung ikaw ay nag-iisa at walang magawa, ikaw at magmuni-muni at bigyan ng kulay at pag-unawa ang mga bagaybagay na iyong napupuna sa iyong paligid at kapwa. Hanapan ang mga ito ng aral na mapupulot, na iyong magagamit sa sariling buhay.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Cayetano in a statement issued on Wednesday said the documentary has mislead viewers about the government’s anti-illegal drug strategy, which is making Philippine society safer, healthier, and more prosperous for the Filipino people. He also said De Lima, Trillanes and Sereno have been given and continue to be given their day in court. On the alleged persecution of media, Cayetano said Philippine media can freely publish and criticize the policies of the Duterte administration.
