ith President Rodrigo Duterte’s appointment of four new Supreme Court justices, he has achieved in creating a bloc of magistrates in the High Court who are expected to support his agenda in a manner no other president before had enjoyed. And with the retirement of eight of the remaining 11 justices during his term, Duterte would stack up the bench with 12 justices of his own choice. By the end of Duterte’s term on June 30, 2022, there will only be three justices left who weren’t appointed by Duterte and that is Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and Associate Justices Marvic Leonen and Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa. With Sereno still at the helm of the Judiciary Branch, Duterte would be vulnerable to attempts to bring him to justice to settle a number of issues against him once he’s out of office. And considering Duterte’s
alleged complicity to the filing of impeachment against Sereno by lawyer Larry Gadon, it would be unlikely for Sereno to bat for Duterte. Déjà vu The attempt to remove Sereno reminds me of the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona. Corona shielded then president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who ducked several attempts to impeach her during her presidency. Corona, who is now deceased, owed his appointment to Arroyo whom he worked for as presidential legal secretary before his Supreme Court appointment. But Corona earned the ire of then president Benigno Aquino III for blocking Aquino’s executive orders. But when Corona successfully maneuvered to break up and distribute Hacienda Luisita – a huge plantation owned by the Cojuangcos, Aquino’s other side

of his family – Aquino allegedly bribed congressmen and senators to impeach and remove Corona from the High Court. To accomplish the alleged “bribery,” Aquino used the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), otherwise known as “pork barrel,” and also create another funding source called the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), which was a "special" budget allocated to accelerate or hasten a government project without Congressional approval. The Supreme Court ruled both programs as unconstitutional. Impeachment complaint Recently, the impeachment complaint against Sereno moved another step when the House of Representatives justice committee ruled that the complaint is sufficient in form and substance. Among the Supreme Court documents used were official lists of Sereno's travel expenses and appointment letters. While there are several allegations of inappropriety, the discrepancies on Sereno’s statement of assets liabilities and net worth (SALN), arising from her attorney’s fees in the Piatco Case, are at the top of the list. But one can argue that she earned her attorney’s fees legally. Her only “sin” is that she did not report it on her SALN, which begs the question: How many government officials missed filling out their SALNs? Is it serious enough to warrant removal from office? In the past, when there was a discrepancy in someone’s SALN, he or she was given the opportunity to correct and resubmit it. It would have been a different situation if Sereno couldn’t explain how she earned her attorney’s fees. Another accusation leveled against Sereno was the purchase of a P5.1 million Land Cruiser 2017 model, which Gadon deems as “extravagant.” But what is

“extravagant”? We are not talking about a Cadillac or Mercedes Benz here. Ever since president Joseph “Erap” Estrada was ousted in the People Power revolution in 2001 -- oftentimes called EDSA Dos or EDSA 2 -- it had become a national pastime to jail or detain the president upon finishing his or her term. It was no surprise then when Aquino jailed Arroyo after she stepped down from office. Now, Duterte wants Aquino jailed. But Aquino has four Supreme Court appointees, which includes Sereno, who could give him a boost should Aquino be brought to justice and, if convicted, would have to reckon with a High Court that is slowly being packed with Duterte’s appointees. However, Chief Justice Sereno could exert influence on some of the justices whom she had developed good rapport and collegial relationship. If Duterte succeeds in removing Sereno and appoints someone whom he knows would be loyal to him, it would create a 13-justice super bloc that could easily provide him with a minimum eight-vote majority, his last line of defense against any attempt to jail him for corruption or plunder. Martial Law And if all else fails, then Duterte could declare martial law. Indeed, martial law is the ultimate method of asserting one’s predominance over the people. But while it is effective for as long as you have the military behind you, abuses against the people are bound to happen, which would then result in the collapse of the power structure that you have put in place to control the people. What you’d end up with is a corrupt government that would eventually be overthrown by the people, just like what happened to the Marcos dictatorship. But declaring martial law wouldn’t be easy. Article VII
FilipinoJournal.com
Section 18 of the 1987 Constitution stipulates the following: 1) Within forty-eight hours from the proclamation of martial law or the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus, the President shall submit a report in person or in writing to the Congress. The Congress, voting jointly, by a vote of at least a majority of all its Members in regular or special session, may revoke such proclamation or suspension, which revocation shall not be set aside by the President. 2) The Supreme Court may review, in an appropriate proceeding filed by any citizen, the sufficiency of the factual basis of the proclamation of martial law or the suspension of the privilege of the writ of Haber corpus or the extension thereof, and must promulgate its decision thereon within thirty days from its filing. 3) A state of martial law does not suspend the operation of the Constitution, nor supplant the functioning of the civil courts or legislative assemblies, nor authorize the conferment of jurisdiction on military courts and agencies over civilians where civil courts are able to function, nor automatically suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus. Of these three stipulations, Duterte shouldn’t have any problem in getting the support of Congress, which is packed with die-hard Duteristas. The problem would be in the Supreme Court where the justices led by CJ Sereno would balk at giving him absolute and unmitigated authority that would allow him to stop the operation of the civil government. Removing Sereno would therefore result in a Dutertesized Supreme Court that swings like a pendulum whichever way the puppet master wants it to go.

hanksgiving is a wonderful time to gather with family and friends and reflect on the blessings of the last year. Many of us experience renewed hope and faith during the Thanksgiving holiday because we turn our eyes onto what is important. What if we spent time each day in giving thanks and prayer? How could God grow out faith and trust if we lived a life of thanks through all seasons and not just Thanksgiving time? When your heart is filled with gratitude, there is little room to worry and complain. THANKSGIVING PRAYER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR 1. A DAILY THANKSGIVING PRAYER: Dear God, Thank you for your amazing power and work in our lives, thank you for your goodness and for your blessings over us. Thank you for your great love and care. Thank you for your sacrifice so that we might have freedom and life. Forgive us for when we don’t thank you enough, for Who You are, for all that You do, for all that You’ve given. Help us to set our eyes and our hearts on you afresh. Renew our spirit, fill us with Your peace and joy. We love You and we need You, this day and every day. We give You praise and thanks, for You alone are worthy! In Jesus Name, Amen. 2. A PRAYER FOR A THANKFUL HEART: Lord, teach me to offer you a heart of thanksgiving and praise in all my Daily experiences of life. Teach me to be joyful always, to pray continually and to give thanks in all my circumstances. I accept them as Your will for my life. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). I long to bring pleasure to Your

Thanksgiving Day
GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, FOR HE IS GOOD; HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER. (PSALM 107:1) heart daily. Break the power of the enemy in my life. Defeat him through my sacrifice of praise. Change my outlook and attitude into one of joyful contentment with my present circumstances. I thank You for . . . [Name a difficult circumstance in your life presently, and thank God for it.] 3. A SHORT PRAYER OF THANKS: God, sometimes life gets me down and I find it hard to see things to be thankful for. Open my eyes to see the gifts you’ve given me in my life. I’m going to start by thanking you for loving me enough to come to earth and die so we can live together forever. Amen. 4. A PRAYER TO TEACH KIDS THANKFULNESS: Lord, I pray that the message of Christ and His sacrifice is the root of gratitude in my heart. That His gracious gift leads me to thankful living, setting an example for my children. That they will have their own relationship with Jesus one day, and that You would grow gratitude in their hearts out of acceptance of Jesus as their Savior. Lead us to do everything in the Name of Jesus and give thanks to You through Him. 5. A THANKSGIVING PRAYER: o Heavenly Father: We thank Thee for the food and remember the hungry. We thank Thee for health and remember the sick; We thank Thee for friends and remember the friendless; We thank Thee for freedom and remember the enslaved; May these remembrances stir us to service. That Thy gifts to us may be used for others. Amen. 6. THANKSGIVING SONG
(MAKES A WONDERFUL PRAYER!): Grateful for each hand we hold, gathered round this table. From far and near we travel home, Blessed are we able. Grateful for this sheltered place, with light in every window, saying welcome, welcome, share this feast, Come in, away of sorrow. Father, mother, daughter, son, Neighbor, friend and friendless; All together everyone in the gift of loving-kindness. Grateful for what’s understood, And all that is forgiven; We try so hard to be good, To lead a life worth living. Father, mother, daughter, son, Neighbor, friend and friendless; All together everyone, let grateful days be endless. Grateful for each hand we hold, Gathered round this table. 7. STATEMENTS OF GRATITUDE: Thank You, God, for the times You have said “no”. They have helped me depend on You so much more. Thank You, God, for unanswered prayer. It reminds me that You know what’s best for me, even when my opinions differ from Yours. Thank You, Lord’ for the things You withheld from me. You have protected me from what I may never realize. Thank You, Lord, for the doors You have closed. They have prevented me from going where You would rather not have me go. Thank You, Lord, for the physical pain You’ve allowed in my life. It helped me more closely relate to Your sufferings on my behalf. Thank You, Lord, for the alone times in my life. Those times forced me to lean closer to You. Thank, You God ,for the uncertainties I’ve experienced. They deepened my trust in You. Thank You, Lord, for the times You
came through for me when I didn’t even know I needed a rescue. Thank You, Lord, for the losses I have experienced. They have been a reminder that You are my greatest gain. Thank You, God, for the tears I have shed. They kept my heart soft and mold-able. Thank You, God, for the times I haven’t been able to control my circumstances. They have reminded me that You are Sovereign and on the throne. Thank You, God, for those people in my life whom You have called to be with You. Their absence from this earth keeps my heart longing for heaven. Thank You, God, that I have an inheritance in the heavenly places … something that this world can never steal from me and I could never selfishly squander. Thank
State U’s help create enterprises in Calabarzon
A
ssistance from state universities in Calabarzon successfully created enterprises in the communities, according to a study presented in a recent international conference. The country’s state universities are potential contributors to economic development. They are the ones who link government programs in agriculture, technology transfer and trade to the communities in the countryside. In a study on How can state universities develop an enterprise? Reforms to building viable livelihoods among poor communities, by Rowena DT. Baconguis of the University of the Philippine Los Baños, Laguna, it was found that. Aside from providing education to improve people’s lives, state universities are also required to engage in extension intervention activities that enable them to help community members become more efficient in their livelihood activities. The research investigated the extension activities of 5 state universities and 21 enterprises

in Calabarzon. The innovations undertaken or promoted by the 21 enterprises were examined and among them 16 enterprises were created as a result of Universities’ assistance, while 4 existing businesses were able to improved, and 1 enterprise was revived. It is interesting to note that while most enterprises that were created are in the food industry, such as processed food, condiments, cooked food, processed milk products, food supplement, and processed fruit drink (juice and wine), the existing businesses that were improved are mostly farmbased. However, although majority (19 out of 21) of the enterprises cited an increase in income attributed universities’ support, only 8 of the 19 were able to market their products, recoup its capital and earn continuously even without the universities’ marketing and technical assistance. The rest struggles to keep afloat by deriving modest profits. Enterprises which earned are those which are operated by those

with business backgrounds or have talent and passion towards their products. The communities are taught basic skills on processing, packaging, how to connect with the right contact persons and where to get supply materials. Other trainings were on production technique and integrated farming. There being a dearth in studies related to the Philippines universities’ contribution to enterprise development, this research was intended to fill said gap by documenting the experiences of the universities in Calabarzon. The research was presented in the last 17th Conference of the Science Council of Asia, jointly organized by the Science Council of Asia and National Research Council of the Philippines, Department of Science and Technology (DOST-NRCP), an agency which promotes and supports basic and problem-oriented researches key to providing solutions to national issues and problems. You, God for the greatest gift You could ever give me; forgiveness through Your perfect Son’s death on the cross on my behalf. Thank You, God, for the righteousness You credited toward me, through the death and resurrection of Jesus. It’s a righteousness I could never earn or attain on my own, Thank You, Father, that You know me, You hear me, You see my tears. Remind me through difficult times that You are God, You are on the throne, and You are eternally good. And thank You, Lord, not only for my eternal salvation, but for the salvation You afford every day of my life as You save me from myself, my foolishness, my own limited insights, and my frailties in light of You power and strength.

Regional wage board approves P21 daily wage hike
T
he regional wage board on Thursday approved an additional P21 a day for minimum wage earners in Metro Manila. The wage hike takes effect starting the end of September and brings the minimum wage from P491 to P512 for nonagriculture workers. Workers in the agriculture sector, small retail, service and manufacturing establishments will get P475 from the previous P454. The 21-peso wage hike is still below the petitioned increase by big labor groups. The Associated
Labor Unions - Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) which asked for a P184 increase said the additional P21 is inadequate to meet the needs of minimum wage workers. The group will request President Rodrigo Duterte to provide a P500 monthly cash subsidy to cover the purchase of rice, groceries, and medicines.

What makes a political system weak?
I
n a way, if there will be a shift to Federalism ,some amendments are most welcome. Like for example, a longer term for local officialsfrom three years to five years with one re-reelection. And last week, this particular idea was suggested by President Duterte’s own party members. It is really imperative to change our political structure and other issues should also be tackled like getting back to the old two party system and consider scratching the party list system. There was a time in the political history of our country where elections were held every four years on the month of November. A president was elected for a four year term and eligible with one reelection, and that’s it. For other officials, there was no term limit. Senators, congressmen, governors, mayors and down the
line, can run for reelection. One can hold office as long as you win the elections. And because of the term limit, ruling politicians field their family members, despite their lack of interest and qualifications. Why in heaven’s name the election month was moved from November to May? Whoever proposed this and whoever agreed to it were not using their ‘coconut’ .The shifting of month unleveled the playing field for candidates. In the month of May there are the fiestas. The preceding months of May are the occasions for young people to hold basketball tournaments, dance balls and the ‘pabasa’ in almost every sitios during celebration of Holy Week. Solicitation letters are flying thick in the air during the holding of those events. The common targets are those running for public office.

It is a double edge sword that weakens a political system. To get the votes, a candidate has the tendency to overspend, and become a thief to recover the expenditures, and save more for the next elections. Voters are in a way selling their votes for their reason in electing people are those who can donate more on their causes. Never mind qualification and moral background of the candidates. It was the imposition of term limit that spawned the political dynasties. The elected official now who stuffed his pocket and increased the digits in his many bank accounts through his corruption will field the wife or the son or the daughter after finishing his third and final term, and only to trade place in the next elections. It became a cat and mouse game. To stress my point. In the early years, people who entered poltics were decent, educated and their wealth was from their sweat. Those who didn’t have money but were qualified were voted into office because vote buying was not a practice. Many of these wealthy people became poor after they made their political exits. Not today! Many politicians who were paupers before, but with stroke of luck won political offices are now wealthy beyond their dreams, and are still counting. And

A Look Within : The Filipino Immigrant Attitude by Leila Castro | Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com
R
oughly a month ago, a 204FM member took to social media about a situation she witnessed while waiting for her appointment at a clinic. She described the very rude manner of a Filipino staff towards
a trainee. The poster said that she brought this up to serve as a reminder to fellow kababayans to be mindful of the feelings of other people. The post became trending for a week resulting in a long thread of comments citing similar stories. Many mentioned about Filipino immigrants becoming arrogant and having the tendency to be rude and to belittle newer immigrants. Have many Filipino immigrants become arrogant; or are the newcomers who have not yet fully adapted to the
Canadian culture and environment just sensitive? I reached out to Dr. Porfiria Pedrina to get her view about the observed attitude of Filipino immigrants. Dr. Porfiria Pedrina obtained her degrees in Bachelor of Arts and Secondary Education- major in English, Master of Arts -major in Educational Management, and Doctor of Education- major in Administration and Supervision, from highly accredited institutions from the Philippines. Moreover, she obtained Sociology as her minor teachable area under the Post
Baccalaureate Degree Program of the Faculty of Education at University of Manitoba. Dr. Pedrina has completed a number of academic research projects not only in the Philippines but also in Canada. She has had twelve years of teaching and administrative experience at Saint Michael’s College of Laguna, Philippines. She and her family moved to Canada in May of 2006 and became Canadian citizens in 2010. Upon arrival in Winnipeg, Dr. Pedrina worked as research-
assistant at University of Manitoba for two years and became a substitute teacher for Winnipeg School Division 1 and Seven Oaks School Division from 2008-2011. She is now blessed with a full-time permanent teaching job at Maples Collegiate of Seven Oaks School Division and is currently the president of Seven Oaks Filipino Employees Association (SOFEA). We did not have the time to do a face to face interview, Dr. Pedrina instead wrote this enlightening article.

There are always two sides of the coin that one should be able to see in order to create a sound judgment regarding the appropriateness of the action of the individual towards coworkers and subordinates. Some may deem it as acceptable while others might argue that the action is not acceptable. This all depends on the personal and cultural background of the person and the knowledge and awareness of the situation. Different personalities, perspectives, educational backgrounds and even cultural values come into play when analyzing the human behaviours and dynamics in work places. While it may be presumed by many that Filipinos who have moved and settled here in Canada successfully also know and understand better how to navigate the corporate culture, some may think that the said statement is flawed and inaccurate.
In any situation, there are two sides of the story that we should analyze; two different worldviews to consider. Let us analyze the situation by taking the perspective of the subordinate and the perspective of the supervisor. Assuming that the scenario is in the workplace where the subordinate is a Filipino newcomer who is being trained by a Filipino supervisor who has been here in Canada much longer than others. In order to take the perspective of the subordinate, there is a need to understand what Filipino newcomers have to undergo in navigating the Canadian work system. In one of the academic articles I previously wrote for my work place, titled, “Never Again an Outsider,” there were three major challenges identified that new immigrants experience such as; identity crisis, mirage and disintegration. In
mentioning briefly, when people experience identity crisis, the people, education, experience and/or things that newcomers may hold dearly from their home country may somehow slowly and painfully drift away for just a matter of days or weeks upon arrival to a new country. It is a great challenge when they do not know and understand or are confused as who do they really are and what they can offer to their new environment. Another challenge that newcomers may experience is the fear that their hopes and dreams can no longer be achieved due to their present situation. Absolutely, it has a negative emotional effect when one only sees a mirage and not a clear vision that can be attained later. It is difficult for new immigrants to not have a clear picture of where they are heading. A lack of sense of purpose why they have to keep or change their job or training might result in an increased anxiety level. As well, newcomers may experience disintegration to their own world, the people around them and even in their workplace. For many newcomers, it may take several years to get acclimatized to a new environment or maybe not at all. Beginning a new life with their family, in a new setting, can be an arduous and long journey to take. In terms of career, the realization of not being able to resume one’s education and/ or career right from where one left off can be a tormenting experience to newcomers. In summary, the importance of the successful integration of newcomers cannot be underestimated. Newcomers may never feel like outsiders again and may easily adjust to their new work environment when people around them assist in creating a warm and

Disappointment, confusion, and even rancour can occur when people with different expectations around the importance of hierarchy, individualism, and risk tolerance attempt to work together to achieve the same goals.” On a personal note, I still feel that we are all held accountable in our words and actions. Establishing effective communication with others as we work collaboratively and collegially will result to a more productive and fruitful day. 204 Neigbourhood Watch Update : Patrolling Maples, Assisting Wildfires Evacuees, Community Safety Forum, and Partnering with Alzeimer’s Society of Manitoba by Leila Castro | Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com
T
he past two weeks was a very busy time for 204 Neighbourhood Watch. Responding to a phone call from James Favel of Bear Clan, on September 2, 3 and 4, we volunteered at Leila Soccer Complex that housed the First Nation community evacuees affected by the Northern Manitoba wildfires. Volunteers Maj Gonsalves, Arlene Dayanghirang, Jackee Castro, Kathy Chionglo and Elmer Aquino came to help. We were assigned various tasks, among which were assisting arriving evacuees in getting their supplies and assigned beds, sanitizing toys, and looking after the kids at the play area. On September 8, James Favel and myself, were the guest speakers at the Community Safety Forum that was held at the Norwest on Alexander community centre.
It was a panel discussion and open forum attended by the Alexander Brooklands residents, and aimed at promoting safety awareness. I was joined by volunteers Maj Gonsalves, Kathy Chionglo and Ponz Mapuyan. Also present was councillor Scott Gillingham. The Alzeimer’s Society of Manitoba joined the 204 Neighbourhood Watch meeting on September 15. Jennifer Licardo, its Education Manager, gave a very informative presentation. She discussed ways of knowing if a person has alzeimer, and on what to do in case in our patrolling, we encounter an unaccompanied person showing symptoms of the disease. On September 6 and 13, we went back to Maples for two rounds of patrolling. We again walked the streets Adsum, Jefferson and Mandalay. The
temperature is starting to drop but it is not stopping us from patrolling for a safer neighbourhood. Our heartfelt thanks to those who continue to support us, with Bakerite (located at 1030 Keewatin) and Filipino Journal on top of the list. 204 Neighbourhood Watch patrols every Wednesday and we need more volunteers. Join 204 Neighbourhood Watch fb group to see our announcements and updates, or email me at Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com.

Heber Bartolome Rocks Winnipeg! by Levy Abad
(This column is reserved for the readers of Filipino Journal who have something to say about particular issues concerning, but not limited to, the Filipino culture especially politics and current events. So, if you have something to say, write it down and then submit it to elfideas102@yahoo.com. If we find your article befitting our standards, we will publish it here.—Ed.) For this issue, our readers’ column features one of our occasional contributors—the local musician and cultural activist Levy Abad, reviewing the recent Winnipeg concert of the Philippines-based Filipino cultural activist / singer-songwriter Heber Bartolome, held at Canton Food Gallery, on September 10.
T
hat Sunday night proved to be a great evening at Canton Food Gallery, where the legendary Filipino troubadour/ singer-songwriter, painter, and professor of Filipino Literature at De La Salle University Heber Bartolome performed his socially relevant songs to an attentive crowd of more or less three hundred. It was indeed a smooth and profound presentation of social issues through songs. There were also a lot of folks who gave generous tips for Heber to sing his hit songs. Heber performed with his son Kris Bartolome, who was a former highschool-arts teacher at Polytechnic University of the Philippines. As early as the late ’60s until now, Heber Bartolome, as a folksinger, consistently sings socially critical songs that ordinary folks and conscious listeners can connect. His songs like “Tayo’y mga Pinoy” [‘We Are Filipinos’] remains relevant, as it calls for independence from empire. Another song, “Nena,” reflects on the impact of impoverishment and how it compels people to embrace miserable choices such as prostitution among other things. Other songs like “Karaniwang Tao” [‘Ordinary Man’] depicts the struggles of the ordinary working man against a rotten and moribund system; “Lerry” tells about the radical options that people embrace in times of oppression and the persecution that comes with it; and “Tagulaylay” [‘Lamentation’] centers on the poor peasant’s lament about the yoke of feudalism. These, including the song “Almusal” [‘Breakfast’], are songs that people both in the homeland and in the diaspora can relate to. Heber’s songs transcend time as it never focuses on personality cult but on real or concrete issues of the day as well as on progressive ideology. During the dark days of the dictatorship in the ’70s, Heber Bartolome and Banyuhay articulated songs about the people's experiences, while some other artists served as purveyors of foreign decadent culture. Heber, for his part, raised questions that subverted people’s consciousness. The album Kalamansi sa Sugat [‘Lime on a Wound’] contains radical pieces that roused and moved people to yearn and march for freedom leading to the fall of

the Marcos dictatorship in the 1986 people's uprising. This is why FAJ Productions’ invitation to Heber to perform in Winnipeg was of great significance. Heber’s songs are like seeds of compassion and a call to people not to forget the motherland. In the midst of the experience of affluence in the North and also the blinding effect of the neon lights that can make one abandon the suffering of our people, Heber’s songs conscientize and call for a radical critique and transformation. Acknowledgment Thanks to Jhayzon Parades, Mar Mance, Zaldy Ordonez of C&K Music for initiating this great event that gave tribute to the lives of martyrs for social change in the motherland. They keep the beacon light of struggle in the field of culture ever burning when only embers of patriotism is left due to bourgeoisification in the firstworld diaspora. Aside from yours truly, Humus Band also opened for the event. Several artists sessioned for Heber: Mar Mance (backup vocals), Jhayzon Paredes (bass), Kris Bartolome (lead guitar), Zaldy Ordoñez (lead guitar), Andy Atanacio (drums), and Rod Dizon (drums/cajon). Some members of the 204Live Music jammed also with Heber; among whom included Paul Menor (guitar), Alex Canlapan, Henry Balanial, and Trixer Bautista. The event was also an opportunity for some activist friends to come together: Susan Rodriguez of Migrante-Manitoba, Johsa Manzanilla of Aksyon ng Ating Kabataan (Anak), Robin Allan Banaag (songwriter), Daniel Tabooy and Juliet Flores, the chairperson of Association of Cordillerans of Manitoba (ACM), Arnold Tongol (SMD of WFGWinnipeg), Adelle Lumanta, Kuya

Felino de Jesus of the Knights of Rizal, Ernesto Ofiaza of MAFTI, and Ingemar Moncada. Also worthy to mention is the fraternity of Heber, The “Kapatirang Plebeians” of the University of the Philippines, as represented by Zaldy Laririt, Antonio and Fleda Blanco, Demy Santos, and Doy Valenciano. The event would have not been possible without the support of the following sponsors: JJ Cabinet, C&K Music, Canton Food Gallery, Mance Financial Services, Vangie's Hair Effects, HB Digiphoto, Funshots Winnipeg, Ardie Gervacio, Frank Rano, and many more. I am proud to say that I have performed with Banyuhay ni Heber Bartolome and brothers Jes and Levi Bartolome as a front act in one of his concerts in Mississauga and Scarborough, in Ontario, back in 2010. It was a full venue, and folks really loved listening to original and socially reflective music, with lines like "Gising ka man, kung 'di ka kikilos, parang patay ka rin" [‘Even when you are awake, if you will not join the struggle for change, then you are as good as dead’] from the song "Inutil na Gising" [‘Awaken Inutile’]. Heber Bartolome’s songs are products of his experience of poverty. His compassion for the oppressed continues to challenge our consciousness. As revolutionary songwriters, we write songs that give hope to others; but in times of our weakness, these same songs come back to haunt us to never give up serving the people in whatever field we are in. Thanks a lot, Kuya Heber, for your contribution to our motherland's culture. May the God of Peace and Change bless you in your journey while spreading the message of compassion and solidarity.
