Have I Told You that, Lately… Rod Stewart’s Enduring Musical Legacy

T

he legendary singer Rod Stewart had a concert at MTS Centre on August 8. And it was not just a typical run-of-the-mill, mediocre

karaoke-type sing-along show that many Pop artists settle with or are prone to present, thinking that their popularity trumps well-honed talent and creativity.

September 5-20, 2014

Rather, Stewart in his sparklingly immaculate attire, performed a spectacle of hits and favorites on a backdrop of classy loungedesigned stage, backed up by a big band of equally well-groomed and adept musicians consisting not only of the usual rhythm and lead guitar players, bassist, drummer, and keyboardist but also with a three-piece horn section, a threefemale percussion section, a harp player, backup singers and dancers, and Winnipeg-local female string section. At 69, Stewart still has it. He

delivered his music at a very high level and with astounding passion and precision, and all these would have not been accomplished without the support of a great creative production team and skillful set of musicians—behindthe-scene factors that many casual concertgoers are unaware of. As any keen-eared music critic would say, a singer is usually only as good as the musicians backing him up; what’s a good voice without well-delivered music backing it up? For their part, the audience, consisting mostly of couples and friends in their late ’50s to their ’60s, had shown their love and affection to the forever-young artist by dancing, shouting, applauding, and singing along to many of Stewart’s songs, especially the classics. The entire setlist was a good mix of footstompers and nostalgic tearjerkers cmyk that included “Infatuation,” “Young Turks,” “Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright),” “Rhythm of My Heart,” “Forever Young,” “The First Cut Is the Deepest” (Cat Stevens cover), b&w “I Don't Want to Talk about It” (Crazy Horse cover), “Have I Told You Lately” (Van Morrison cover), “Can't Stop Me Now,” “You're in My Heart (The Final Acclaim),” “Hot Legs,” “Maggie grey May,” and the encore “Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?” And if you asked me if Stewart was indeed still sexy, then I would have to answer yes. The man still has not only the distinct raspy voice but also the hair, fashion sense, and charm.

Stewart’s set was opened by an equally engaging and percussive-driven and usually flamenco/Tropicana-flavored set of danceable and rocking tunes of the legendary guitarist Carlos Santana. At 67, Santana was also a revelation and a proof that youth is not a prerequisite to being an excellent artist—for the most part, experience, longevity, musicianship, discipline, and continuous use of skills are far more important. Final Note Born on January 10, 1945, in London, England, Rod Stewart began his professional music career in 1963 when he joined the rhythm-and-blues group The Dimensions as a harmonica player and backing vocalist. He then joined band after band, notably Faces (1969–1975, with Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane, and Kenny Jones) until he finally established himself as a reputable solo artist. Considering his long and enduring career, Stewart has a prolific musical output, which includes 28 solo studio albums—from 1969’s An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down to 2013’s Time. Carlos Santana was born on July 20, 1947, in Jalisco, Mexico. With his family, he relocated to California, United States in the 1960s. He has seven studio albums under his own name: from 1973’s Love Devotion Surrender to 1994’s Santana Brothers. As part of the Rock group Santana, he with his mates has released 22 studio albums: from 1969’s selftitled to 2014’s Corazon.

Highlights of Berlin

Gem and Lita at the Brandenburg Gate

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

hen the victorious German National Soccer team returned to Berlin on 15 July 2014 from Brazil with the 2014 FIFA (`Federation Internationale de Football Association`) World Cup trophy more than half a million crowd of cheering fans in black, red and gold (national colours of Germany) made their way to Brandenburg Gate to welcome the champions and celebrate the country`s fourth title victory. Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) is the

famous venue for huge street celebrations in Berlin, the capital city of Germany. One of the most well-known landmarks of Germany and one of Berlin`s most important monuments, the Gate is Germany`s equivalent to the `Arc de Triomphe` in Paris, France or to `Rua Augusta Arco` in Lisbon, Portugal which are also both spectacular. Situated by the Gate is the pedestrian square, Pariser Platz, always crowded with tourists trying to get a perfect shot of the arc. A neo-classical arc constructed between 1778 and 1791 the gate is dominated by the `quadriga`, the four-horse drawn chariot driven by the goddess of victory and peace, Victoria. On our German tour the Gate, together with the Berlin Wall, is high on our priority list of the top ten sightseeing attractions Berlin has to offer. The `city of cool` delivers incredible history and culture having its origin in the 13th century and having been the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Reich. A great part of German history was made here. It was here

Let's get social

that former US President Ronald Reagan said in 1987: `Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, `Open this Gate! Tear down this Wall!` The Wall built right near the Brandenburg Gate is the famous (or notorious) Berlin Wall which used to separate Communist East Berlin from West Berlin for 28 years. It must be remembered that at the end of World War II Germany was divided into 4 zones, each zone occupied by the victorious Allied powers - the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. The same thing was done with Germany`s capital city of Berlin. Later in 1949 the 3 areas occupied by the US, France and Britain became officially West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) and from the zone occupied by the Soviet Union emerged East Germany (German Democratic Republic). Berlin was also divided into West Berlin and East Berlin separated by the Wall, geographically and politically. The Berlin Wall (Berliner Mauer) was constructed by the German Democratic Republic starting 13 August 1961 completely cutting off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. Often referred to as Wall of Shame the barrier of concrete and barbed wire with grand towers placed along the large walls prevented emigration of East Germans by crossing over the border from East Berlin into West Berlin. From 1961 to 1989 around 5,000 people attempted to cross the wall and

escape with an estimated death toll of 125. On 9 November 1989 the East German government announced that all German Democratic Republic citiznes could visit West Germany and West Berlin and on the night of 10 November the jubilant Germans from East and West gathered by the wall in celebration. Parts of the wall were chipped away by the public and souvenir hunters. The wall was primarily destroyed in 1990.

The fall of Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification on 3 October 1990, i.e., 45 years after the WW II. Visiting and seeing the remnants of the Berlin Wall make us become also a part of its history! We`ll continue our sightseeing tour of Berlin on the 05-20 October issue. God bless. Trivia: `The very first bomb dropped by the Allies on Berlin during World War II killed the only elephant in the zoo, also making it the first casualty.`

Gruesome Execution

O

n Tuesday, August 19, 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) released a video that shows the gruesome beheading of American journalist James Foley. The

extremist group threatened to kill another captured photojournalist, Steven Joel Sotloff of Miami if the U. S. does not stop its airstrikes in Iraq.

The 40-year old Bostonbased Foley disappeared in Northern Syria on November 22, 2012 while reporting on casualties at the frontlines claimed by the rebels. It is ironic that this man who seemed sympathetic to the sufferings of people in the wartorn Middle East should suffer such a fate. American journalist Jim Foley just before his death The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said about 20 journalists of different nationalities are missing in Syria. CPJ believes that the captives are being used as ransoms. There have been little reports on the missing journalists in order to lessen the threats on their lives and health. Here’s the take from my good email friend, Virgilio Gonzales from Danbury, Connecticut: “Islam is a religion of peace. No further proof is needed than 9/11 when its radical followers sent 3000 Americans to rest in peace. That was just the beginning. Now they are doing it again in Iraq with more brutality and savagery than ever. “You don’t have to be a Christian, just be a normal human being, to be shocked at what the ISIS is doing in Iraq. “Man’s inhumanity to man is nothing new under the sun. In recent history we have seen the likes of the Holocaust, the Japanese atrocities in WWII, the killing fields in Vietnam and Cambodia, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Russian gulags and

many others. But this one in the Middle East goes beyond the pale. “In this ethnic cleansing Christians, Yazidis and other minorities in Iraq are being maltreated and murdered for just being different. We wonder if our world has gone mad. In this day and age we expect people to be more civilized, educated and enlightened. But it is not so. “When helpless and innocent men (and even children) are being decapitated and their heads impaled and displayed on iron fences, we wonder at what manner of people these are. Do they have any human feelings or conscience at all? “President Obama seemed to have already given up the fight, although he has authorized air drops of humanitarian supplies and limited air strikes against Islam militants in Iraq. He said: “As commander-in-chief I will not allow the United States to be dragged into another war in Iraq.” “But we now live in a global village, made so by modern

September 5-20, 2014

technology and weapons of mass destruction. What John Donne had said four centuries ago still rings true today: “No man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a part of the main…Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.” “President Obama should not wash his hands off this genocide in the Middle East while Christians, Yazidis and Jews are being slaughtered.” “War is Hell!” as Union General William Tecumseh Sherman said during the American Civil War. But the inhumanity shown in the Middle East seems to exceed what we are able to fathom. Back in 2002, a similar execution was done in Pakistan by the Al Qaeda which also shocked the world. Did the terrorists achieve its objective? As far as we know, the Americans hunted down the executioner and had him in some American jail.

Dealing with Fraud 2

I

n the last article I discussed fraud schemes where outsiders try to take advantage of the business person essentially by pretending to provide a product or service that is overpriced or not delivered. This time I will consider some examples where the fraudster plays on the greed or a knee jerk response of the potential victim to avoid taxes. One of the recent plays on both greed and lower taxes were the charity donation schemes. Designed to appear as charitable donations, in actuality, these schemes were fronts to earn huge revenues for the organizers and to return relatively small tax savings to the clients who were vulnerable to audits from CRA. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), quite properly, has taken aggressive action (with a lot of success) to close down these schemes, which relied to a large extent on the greed of individuals, often attracting taxpayers who had never previously made charitable donations. The promise was to receive tax refunds greater than the actual cash outlays to the “donation”. In another less common tax scheme, tax preparation companies promised to reduce your taxes when they prepare your tax returns. They did this by creating a fictional company that has considerable business losses, which then were applied against

your other income, resulting in large tax refunds. It is difficult to believe anyone involved was innocent in these schemes. For some reason it seems the lure of lower taxes drives people to do silly things. In the case of the charity schemes, the potential profit was actually quite small compared to the risk. In the case of the phoney loss companies, it is just plain stupidity. In both cases, a good investment would probably have better results without the potential risks. The fake companies lead to huge penalties for fraud unless the taxpayers can convince the Canada Revenue Agency to believe they didn’t know they were filing fraudulent tax returns, a difficult task at best. Some people do avoid paying their proper taxes and it is unfair that honest taxpayers carry the load. Some taxpayers get away with cheating, perhaps forever and some of the victims actually assist them by paying for sub-standard work, whether it is fraudulent tax returns or deficient construction. Unfortunately ,it does seem that the CRA is more interested in chasing down the small taxpayer, an apparent reality that leads to less faith in the tax system. Despite claims by the Minister to actively chase down the off shore tax shelters of wealthy taxpayers, the truth is probably that relatively little is done by CRA because

Let's get social

of the cost of actively chasing down sophisticated schemes. It is much easier to chase down the small unsophisticated taxpayer. There are many other schemes, some legal some not to be careful about. Over the years, I have seen: investments in movies, with little chance of having a profit, realty investments that didn’t show a profit for decades, if at all. These were legal investments, but the savings on taxes was more than offset by the loss on the investment; realty developments with huge risks; unregistered financial investments; phoney science and technological investments, some even promoted by accounting firms. Several suggestions that I can make are: 1.Understand the investment and use common sense; 2.If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is; 3.Seek advice from competent professionals and check credentials; 4.Make sure the professional has liability insurance to cover instances of bad advice; 5.As much as possible spread your risk; 6.Be involved in your investments and ask questions. I would rather make a profit and pay taxes than lose money and save a portion on taxes. Interview Clues, Part 2: Confidence in your accomplishments In the Interview Clues series, Employment Solutions staff interview Michele Hazell, Human Resources and Operations Manager with over fifteen years’ experience across the private, non-profit, and government sectors. Question: If you can’t answer an interview question right away, what should you do? Michele Hazell: The best thing to do is to ask the interviewer if you can think about the question for a moment while you move on to the next question. Just remember to come back to the question you paused on. An interview is typically based on a scoring system, so if you skip a question, you’ll score a bit lower. The interviewer might remember to come back to that question or keep moving forward. Either way, when you are ready to respond, ask the interviewer to return to that question. If you are asked about how you would respond in a particular type of situation, and you don’t know or don’t have that specific experience, you can tell the interviewer what you would do in that situation versus what you have done. But if you are totally stumped, there’s nothing wrong with saying, “I’m not familiar with that, but I can learn it.” If you are embellishing experience, the interviewer will see through that pretty quickly. Always be honest in your responses and use the interview time wisely. If you don’t have the experience, let the interviewer know, and move on to the next question. We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face. —Eleanor Roosevelt

Question: If the interviewer asks, “What is your area of improvement?” how do you respond? Michele Hazell: Always keep answers about areas of improvement to professional matters. I’ve had people tell me areas of improvement in their personal life—that is a red flag. It’s a professional interview, so stick to professional topics. If your area of improvement is something like time management or communication skills, don’t leave it at that—speak to what you’re doing to improve and what type of progress you’ve seen so far. Employers know that everyone has areas of opportunity, but when they ask this question, what they really want to know is: Are you taking initiative to improve? Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it. Autograph your work with excellence. Question: What is a good way to answer the question “Why should I hire you”? Michele Hazell: Study the job posting before the interview, which

will give you a good idea of what the employer is looking for and a better sense of how to respond to this question. Then, stick to your skills. Focus on what you will bring to the job. Sometimes people are shy or worry that they are bragging by telling the interviewer about their accomplishments, but remember that the employer really wants to know what you are capable of. It also demonstrates your confidence level. Employers are looking for individuals who will take initiative and who are confident in the skills and abilities they can bring to a position. When you speak up about your skills and background, you might bring up something the interviewer hadn’t thought of, and it could be a game changer that helps you to get that job. But most importantly, it displays confidence and demonstrates that you’re interested in the role. Put your future in good hands— your own.

The Filipinos Have Got Talent

Aspiring Singer Paul Ong

K

araoke singing has long become a common and regular pastime for many people, especially Filipinos. However, not everyone who loves singing could have the passion and

perseverance to take it to a higher level. In Winnipeg, one Filipino who has achieved this was Paul Kevin Ong, known by many in the community for having tried out at the reality talent show Canada’s

Got Talent in 2012. I have had the opportunity to meet and watch Ong perform at Canton Food Gallery and at the recent Third Annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. And now, it’s my pleasure to introduce him to all of you. What inspired you to join the show? What challenges did you face and how was the experience? “When I heard about the auditions, I immediately got interested; so I joined right away. It was one of my most memorable experiences, having to stand on that stage in front of three celebrity judges and on national television. I think I did a pretty good job as I received a standing ovation and advanced to the semifinals. This led me to another opportunity. I got chosen as the hometown hero for Winnipeg; I was featured in a full-length TV commercial as an endorser of the talent show and of Tim Horton’s, which was one of the major sponsors.” What made you pursue singing? Who inspired you? “My interest in singing started when I was three. I was brought up in a family that loved music and appreciated t h e performing arts. My love of Broadway a n d showtunes

shaped my singing style. My family, especially my mom, encouraged me to develop the skill. They saw a potential in me.” What artists would you consider your influences? “My favorite Filipino artists include Martin Nievera and Jed Madela. I find their singing style challenging and their songs nice to sing and listen to; they suit my voice as well.” What songs do you usually choose to perform? “I usually choose songs based on the tune, dynamics, and rhythm. Afterwards, I look at the meaning of the lyrics; and then I try singing them to see if they would suit my style and voice range.“ What can you say about the Filipino music scene in Winnipeg? “As in anywhere in the world, I would say that many Filipinos are naturally talented singers. The Filipino music scene in Winnipeg has such a number of talented performers both young and old, and this was

evidenced by the recent Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.” What can you say about Philippine/ Filipino music in general? “OPM (Original Pilipino Music) is really spectacular! There have been a lot of songs made by talented and gifted songwriters and composers, many of which stood the test of time and continue to define the Philippine music industry.” What other activities do you engage in aside from singing? “I am a licensed teacher here in Manitoba, and that is my profession. Currently, I am also taking up university courses to further improve my credentials as an educator. I also cook and bake in my spare time. Culinary art is my second hobby, next to singing.” ’ Any final words you want to say to our readers? “I would like to thank especially the Filipino community who have been supportive of my singing. I extend my gratitude to all the people who have been so nice to me and who allowed me to perform for them.”

‘Rekorder’ continues to make waves Mikhail Red’s mysterypsychological drama, “Rekorder,” continued to get international recognition as it garnered numerous awards in various countries. For his full-length feature debut film, Red won the Excellent Asia-Pacific Young Director Award at the recent Gwangju International Film Festival in South Korea. Earlier this year, the film won the Best Music Award at the Annonay International Film Festival (Festival international du premier film d’Annonay) held

in France. It tied for the Special Jury Prize at the same festival with John Denizot’s “La Belle Vie.” Lead actor Ronnie Quizon was also given the El Rey Award for Excellence in Acting at the Barcelona International Film Festival for his role in the film, “Rekorder” is an entry to the New Breed section of last year’s Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. It tells the story of a former film cameraman who later became a movie pirate.

Heart Evangelista rebuffs political tag to her engagement Heart Evangelista is not in any way bothered by some netizens’ opinion connecting her recent engagement to Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero as politically-motivated. It appears that bashers claim the engagement is connected with the Senator’s political plans. The pretty actress said its fine with her as long as she knows the truth, adding that it was Chiz himself who told her to ignore the hurtful comments. The actress also shrugged off the reported comparison of her

engagement to the engagement of fellow GMA-7 stars Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes. She said she’s very careful when addressing issues concerning Marian as they had a falling out in 2011 while working on the comedy movie Temptation Island. The newly-engaged actress added that there will be changes on her career once she entered married life. She said she might do a soap opera only once a year and focus more on hosting jobs.

Megastar no longer with TV5 Actress-singer Sharon Cuneta announced on her Twitter account on Friday last week that she has left TV5. The Megastar did not finish her five-year contract with the network as her departure is two years short of the fiveyear contract she signed in 2011. Earlier, Sharon posted an emotional message in Facebook regarding the developments in her career because of what she

called a mid-life crisis. She said she hated the way she looked and the time wasted by not focusing and working on bettering her own person. Speculations had it that Sharon either might go back to ABS-CBN, her home network of 24 years, strike a deal with GMA 7, or go into production. Meanwhile, TV5 thanked Sharon for being part of the network for nearly three years.

Judging the Third Annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival The Ultimate Representation of Culture Ano nga ba ang kultura? Tradisyon? Nakaraan? Sinauna? Makaluma? Matatanda? eld on August 23, the Third Annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival was a success, not only in terms of the number of participants (organizations, associations, performers, volunteers) but also in audience attendance. Despite

H

that drizzly and chilly dark-skied Saturday, the participants still managed to present in their best forms and the entire production team had ensured that the audience enjoyed a taste of Philippine culture on all sides. At past nine in the morning… A parade of floats started the event—gracing portions of McPhillips Street around the

vicinity of Garden City Shopping Centre, where the festival held its base since its first year. Flocks of excited and wide-eyed mostly Filipino spectators lined the streets to witness the beautiful and culturally distinct floats complete with uniformed and costumed performers and participants, many of whom would also be presenting cultural performances based on the flavor of their provincial subcultures. The center of the festival was held on the actual grounds of Garden City where an impressive modernized bahay-kubo–influenced sturdy and festively adorned stage was situated. After the parade, a contest of cultural performances by participating Filipino organizations/ associations followed suit. Having been invited to be a member of the panel of judges who would choose winners among the talented groups of performers was really a daunting task. Not because we had to stay at our designated table and carefully pay attention to every moves and shakes of the performers but because choosing the best among the lot was a big responsibility. Judging based on a Balance of Objectivity versus Subjectivity In any competition, especially that which involved group performances, contestants generally presented impressive works. After all, hard work and creativity were obvious factors in their having come up with entertaining and educational shows like that. However, as a professional judge, I needed to have that fair balance of objectivity and subjectivity. When I say objectivity, it meant that I had to score each group of

All photos & articles available online!

performers based on a given set of measurable points of criteria, which usually included costumes, dance choreography and synchronicity, relevance of concepts/themes, audience impact, effectivity of music used, and performers’ presentability or attractiveness. On subjectivity, here comes the personal taste and preference of the individual judges. Personally, I had a difficult time tallying my choices because I had to carefully consider every aspect of the performances. In the end though, I had to use the points of criteria to justify my personal preference—which is a good balance of traditional and modernity, live music versus pipedin music, engaging and lively movements of the dance routines, elaborateness of the costumes, and creativity of the presentations. Having explained this, I’m certain that as far as I’m concerned, the results of the competition were fair and well-deliberated. A Satisfied Audience Observing the audience at large, I could say that the majority of the people there had fun and had a moment’s glimpse of how a typical Philippine cultural festival could be—a mix of the traditional and the modern, fun and noise, food and music, rain or shine, exhaustion but satisfaction. Many of them had surely felt nostalgic, reminiscing their own experiences and previous lives in their native land. In the afternoon onwards… The committee behind Manitoba Filipino Street Festival succeeded in being able to present Philippine culture both in its traditional and modern sense. They certainly acknowledged that

FilipinoJournal. com

September 5-20, 2014 any culture, for that matter, is a good mix of the old and the new— representing both the elder and the younger generations, casting no one aside, embracing everyone’s sentiments. The traditional aspect of Philippine culture—Folk-based, rural, provincial, and laidback— was represented by performances by the likes of Bibak, Aklan Association of Manitoba, Tribo Sugbu, Association of Caviteños in Manitoba, and MIPS–Winnipeg Batangueño Association. On the other hand, representing the modern part of Filipino culture included Winnipeg local singers/songwriters Tiffany Ponce and Levy Abad, Toronto-based singer/songwriter / keyboard player Arlene Paculan, and local bands The 12/21 and Transfusion. In addition, Winnipeg Sikaran & Arnis Academy presented a modernized rendition of mixed martial arts combined with tinikling on a backdrop of Pop/Hip-hop version of some Philippine Folk tunes. A well-deserved salute goes to all—especially the top leaders and movers behind the festival’s committee—who contributed their time, effort, hard work, creativity, sportsmanship, and excitement to the success of the Third Annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.

Street Festival Highlights Beauty of Philippine Culture

T

he light rain and cloudy skies did not dampen the spirits of thousands from Winnipeg’s Filipino community during the 3rd annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. The festival continues to grow with over 50 parade entries and over 70 participating community associations and sponsors. The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival is largest Filipino community event in Manitoba as it brings together associations and groups that make up Manitoba’s 70,000 strong Filipino community. The festival demonstrated the rich history, culture and talent from near and far. Local entertainers, singers, dancers performed on the festival main stage and the indoor centre court stage at Garden City Shopping Centre.

The main stage finale that closed out this year's festival included special performances by X-Factor USA finalist Ellona Santiago and the much anticipated appearance by The Filipino Channel’s (TFC) own Gerald Anderson. Even under light rainfall and threatening skies, Gerald Anderson fans stayed to scream, cheer and take selfies during his performance and on-stage antics. Next year’s 2015 Manitoba Filipino Street Festival is going to be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015.

T

he Porsche Panamera 4S might be one my new goals in life. It's a fantastic high performance luxury sedan that seats 2+2. Perfect for transporting business associates, a family road trip to the lake or even delivering the Filipino Journal to Brandon. The 2014 Porsche Panamera 4S is equipped with a Twin Turbo 3-litre V6 that pumps out 420 horsepower and 380lb-ft torque. The 19" Panamera Turbo II wheel package was included in the media test model, an upgrade from 18" wheels.

Launch Control How can I explain launch control? To get the full appreciation of this beautiful driving machine and one unique way to freak out your passengers, it's called Launch Control. I love how Porsche has this feature built in to accelerate from 0 to 60km/hr, or 0 to 100km/hr in the shortest amount of time. Zero to 100km/hr in under 5 seconds! I felt like I was an airplane captain as I prepped the Panamera 4S into launch control. It was a process to activate it. Press a few buttons, press the brake with your left foot, floor the

25

Porsche Panamera 4S Perfect for families and executives that want to go fast! gas with your right foot, wait until you see “Launch Control” flashing on the steering column, hold the steering wheel firmly before lifting your left foot off the brake and BOOM! The Panamera 4S shoots forward with 420hp of force that pushes you into your seat. In a matter of seconds, you’re at a cruising speed of 100km/ hr along the highway. That's Launch Control. Cup Holders I've been told that Porsche redesigned the cup holders in the new Porsche Macan SUVs. I just hope we see a cup holder redesign in upcoming Panamera models because they're still awful. They're not practical enough to carry a travel mug or let alone a Super Slurpee.

I love the interior of the Panamera especially the full array of buttons along the centre stack. One quick press of a button and you instantly turn features on & off. No need to fumble through multi-level touch menu displays. The best button on the centre stack is a button that looks like binoculars but actually serves to make loud exotic noises in the exhaust. The 2014 Panamera 4S starts at $112,500 and with the added options and packages in the media model comes with a final price tag of $134,785. Part of the upgrades include an adaptive air suspension, sports package and sports seats at $13,700 and a $2,420 BOSE Audio package.

The cup holders are aweful and not recommended while driving. Stick to an a small shot of espresso instead.

Interior driver cabin featuring black leather interior and beautiful centre stack and Porsche Communication Management with navigation.

Spacious trunk and can accommodate at least 12 bundles of the Filipino Journal.

QPAM 25th Anniversary defines the Quezonians' commitment to heritage and culture

I

t was a perfect 25th Anniversary of the founding of Quezon Province Association of Manitoba, a warm salute to the 70th death anniversary of the former Commonwealth President Manuel Luis Quezon (a prominent son of Quezon Province (Tayabas), and to top them all, this silver anniversary has become the living showcase of the beauty and glamour of our national treasure, the Filipina "terno" and the "barong"; and added to the event last August 22 at Viscount Gort Hotel, is the "Rigodon de Honor" ,the gliterati of the bygone eras, the "Rigodon de Honor", when the illustrados of the pueblos (towns) and capitolios (capital city) showed the finery of the Filipino costumes during fiesta,

New Year's and inauguration balls; and a touch of class decor by Justin Merluza, making the ambience of the grandhall as an added feature to the glamour and glitz of the evening. "I have never seen many ladies and men wearing the "ternos" and the "barongs"," said one of the guests. "This is something nostalgic as I remember my grandmother, in her photo, she was wearing a terno made in sinamay (pineapple fiber) fabric, so beautifully embroidered, and fashionably crafted," another guest quipped. The hermanas and hermanos mayores since its foundation were honored. Recognized at the celebration include Olie and Precy Merluza, 2014 Mayuhan Hermano and Hermana Mayores; Cassey Ignacio, Reyna Elena; MaCCFA’s reigning queen, Precy Merluza, Mrs. Philippines-Manitoba 2014. The program was emceed by Alden Novallasca and Hannah Chan-Urbano. Precy Fabre, Ernie and Vangie Natoza, Abdon and Lolita Chan. Normita Cymbalisty, one of the QPAM advisers, noted the history of QPAM and Manuel Luis Quezon; and Hannah and Alden did a special trivia about Pres. Manuel Quezon when he allowed, in a notable humanitarian gesture, in cooperation with the United States High Commissioner Paul V. McNutt, facilitated and allowed the entry into the Philippines the more than 3,000 Jewish Refugees fleeing the Hitler regimes in Europe, and who were rejected by the United States and Canada,

only to settle in the Philippines where they established some notable businesses like Estrella del Norte, one of the most popular jewellery stores and the wellknown pharmacy, Botica Boie, in Escolta Manila. The event planner and design of the anniversary celebration were handled by Just-inCouture by Justin Merluza, owner and creative director. Public dancing followed. Indeed, QPAM's 25th anniversary is the celebration of our Filipino heritage and culture, at its finest!

Rain adds more vitality to the Filipino Journal’s Sama-Summer festival revelers! by Rod E. Cantiveros

H

ey, the yellow corn and the apple cider tasted much sweeter, as the festival revelers braved the intermittent rains on the 6th Filipino Journal Sama-Summer’s Morden Corn and Apple Festival! No,the rain did not dampen the more than one hundred kababayans, mostly new immigrants, who looked forward to join the thousands of people who were lining up to taste the newly cooked sweet yellow corn and a cup of cold apple cider for free; nor the rain washed out the enthusiasm of the group who joined the annual parade even if the Filipino Journal entourage was placed at the last, behind the humongous John Deree tractor, believe me, the best for last! “This is my first time, and I am enjoying every minute of it, we have lots of fun,” said by one of the new immigrants who was scouring the steaming kernel of the sweet corn. “I am so happy that the Filipino Journal has this important event for the new immigrants.” Lunch time was considered a communal event when the revelers went to a hexagonal koisk, near the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre, and offered their “baon” and ate together. “Ang sarap naman ng kainan, ang daming pagkain! We’re eating together,”said one of the members from Bus No. 2.

“Sana laging ganito.” she said with a big smile. After the great communal lunch, some new immigrants visited “BRUCE”, the world’s largest publicly displayed Mosasaur, an ancient sea creature who lived between 80 to 90 millions years. Also known as “T-REx of the Sea” who lived during the Cretaceous period, this monster reptile fossils were unearthed at west of Morden and Thornhill, Manitoba in 1974,and officially displayed at the fossil museum. “Wow, this is the best educational trip i erver had, what a giant reptile,” said of the students who joined the trip to the museum, one of the sites visited by tour organized thru the effort of Ron Cantiveros, publisher and CEO of the Filipino Journal. Heading to Morden was too short a time, thanks to the countless games participated by the festival revelers in Buses No. 1 and 2.who did not mind the one and a half hour trip. And minor and major prizes were awarded to the winners, and to their satisfaction, one said: “Bawing-bawi ang ibiniyad ko sa trip na ito, thanks!” And we say thanks a million to our nevertired sponsors and donors, Larry and Tova Vickar, Steve Lipischak of the Vickar Automotive Group, Felix and Evelyn Pao, of the Sunnyday Group of Companies

(Canton Food Gallery, Green Ninja Eatery and Bakery, Sunnyday Heating & Air Conditioning, Coldwell and Banker-Sarah and Nathan Pao, realtors);Lucky Supermarket, MTS, McCafe, Tindahan Food Mart, Aristocrat, JS Furniture, UMAC, MGE Deli, Jimmels Bakery, Angelina Hair City (Claire and Ner), Joseph and Odette Chabal, Myxs Images, Dr. Mitzi Izzat and Ed Ramos. Special thanks to the officials of the Morden Corn and Apple Festival for their generosity and hospitality to the Filipinos who received a gift of a bagful of fresh, sweet corn and apple cider. Most of the festival goers bought sacks of fresh corns! and thanks most specially to the volunteers: Carol Castro, Arlene and Adlane Kaidi, Julie Vila, Josie Olivares and Simbra Agapito, of Bus No. 2; Ellen S, Natividad, Rod E. Cantiveros, Carrie Barroga and Charina, Bus No. 1. The rain continued to pour as the two buses left for Winnipeg: more games were held and prizes were awarded to the winners, this made the festival goers awake and asking for the next year’s trip. Want to see and hold a garter snake at Narcisse, Manitoba this fall? The annual Filipino Journal Sama-Summer 2014 started with a great bang; and ended with a greater bang, a warm welcome for the new immigrants!

Horoscope Enjoy going under the radar of a few people during this period and do something special that only you appreciate. Your superspecial someone may have a great gift for you. Or, if yearning for a partner, you could meet someone now.

Getting the right balance between work and play or diet and exercise could be easier starting this week. You’ll be motivated to pay attention to what works best for you and what doesn’t in terms of lifestyle issues. It’s time to review your habits and chuck any that don’t support your ultimate goals.

September 8 shines straight into your career, work environment, and public presence. Be pleasant, and let any unreasonable expectations sort themselves out. Say little and smile a lot. You could have a sharp, sparkling conversation on that day. Listen as much as you talk, and ask polite but in-depth questions.

PAHALANG

Lay low, avoid crowds or noisy places, and pamper your health in general. A supper of comfort foods at home made for and not by you - would be ideal. Set straight something important or something merely annoying and offensive. Everyone will thank you.

You’re in the mood to profit from any business ventures and explore entrepreneurial ideas for investment and pure fun. There’s also a focus on learning and discovery, suggesting that this is a good time to upgrade your skill set or explore subjects that pique your interest.

Though you’re upbeat and positive, you might find that the situation at home taxes your strength. Thankfully, a tricky issue seems to be easing, which may reassure you that things really can improve. When it comes to getting your message out to the world, try to do so in as balanced a way as possible. Financially, you may be motivated to splurge on small luxuries, but you deserve it!

Even though things may have been tough lately, you seem to have come through with flying colors. While you’re not completely out of the woods, the current alignment adds strength and support that you’ll greatly appreciate. You may be in the spotlight or in a position of importance, but a part of you may feel like keeping a low profile, or at least keeping your cards close to your chest as a way to ensure your privacy.

Romantic, business, friendly, or other relationships continue to flourish. It’s time to move in new circles and connect with people who can pique your imagination and enthusiasm for new ideas. Finances benefit from a sound budget and strong plan. This is a good time to start repaying debt and so ease any attendant anxiety.

Love, beauty, social graces, and all good things are more to your taste now - less overdone and more serviceable. Romance rates high during the Full Moon. You may be the more romantically demonstrative one, and you’ll have no trouble seeing your partner as the perfect angel in disguise.

Starting Monday, hints that romance can happen when you’re willing to socialize and move in new circles. Career ambitions also beckon this week, and it helps to have a plan or strategy that can move you along the path to success.

Concerning money, you may feel more relaxed and optimistic about your situation. In addition, a new focus on family matters encourages conversation as a way to increase harmony at home.

Positive experiences on the work front may be giving you more confidence, encouraging you to showcase your skills and abilities, and helping you to feel good about the future. This is a great time to look for work that might be more challenging and lucrative. Relationships also come into focus, enticing you to see key connections in a new light or from a fresh perspective.

Applying for a US Tourist Visa

US Consul, Richard Hanrahan - US Consulate Calgary.

B

ack in May on the Filipino Journal Facebook Page, we posted commentary about the potential of the US Consulate in offering a US Consular Outreach in Winnipeg for those individuals or families looking to apply for a US Tourist Visa. The response on our Facebook Page including phone calls and emails was overwhelming and also caught the attention of the US Consulate in Calgary. Last July, in a joint meeting to discuss the matter of a potential outreach service, Ron Cantiveros, publisher of the Filipino Journal met with the US Consulate Winnipeg, Timothy Cipullo (Consul & Principal Officer), and visiting US Consul from Calgary, Richard Hanrahan. Also part of the meeting was Filipino Journal immigration columnist and lawyer, Reis Pagtakhan; Jon Reyes, President of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council and Ellen Natividad also with the Filipino Journal. Due to the tremendous response from our readership, we discussed the US Visa matters at length and highlighted the similar offering of the Philippine Consulate General Toronto when they visit Winnipeg for their consular outreach visits. The dream of having a US Consular outreach in Winnipeg is going to continue to be a dream. While the US Embassy recognizes the increasing number of applications for US Visa from Manitoba, there are several factors and huge logistical challenges to ensure proper and secure visa services by a US Consular office. There are IT security measures which require a permanent location and physical infrastructure.

The reality is that visa applicants will still have to travel to a US Embassy/Consulate for the in-person interviews. For Filipinos in Winnipeg, this still means flying/driving to Calgary or Toronto. For Filipinos that have been approved to immigrate to Canada/Manitoba and currently in the Philippines, it was also recommended that they apply at the US Embassy in Manila. Here are some important points and reminders for anyone applying for a US Visa: •No interviews needed for certain ages. Check with the embassy/ consulate first if interviews will be required for very young children and very old applicants. •If visas are renewed 6 months before expiration date and at the same consular office where these were obtained, there will be no interview needed. •Read the security procedures before going to the embassy/ consulate for an interview •Don’t lie even about minor or small details. •Make sure that the name on the application form is exactly what is on your passport •Avoid having an interpreter as much as possible. The interview questions are in simple English. •Caregivers who are working for a Canadian family and are applying for a US VISA must be working for that family for at least a year. •Having a vacation is not considered an emergency to merit expedited appointment. •Do not buy a plane ticket before getting the visa. The projected wait time for an interview is approximately two weeks with the US Consulate in Calgary. Due to recommendations from the joint meeting, the Filipino Journal announced in August a private bus charter to Calgary and Banff which includes two nights in Calgary. The trip also incorporates a visit to the US Consulate for those individuals and families interested in applying for a US Visa. We’re aware that readers might have questions for the US Consulate Calgary on this matter. If you have any questions, comments, about our engagement with the US Consulate on this matter, please email events@ FilipinoJournal.com

ANCOP Canada (Winnipeg) 2014 Events by Eli Minglana

L

ast August 16, 2014 CFC Ancop Winnipeg made great strides in its events to raise funds for the poorest of the poor with the help of key supporters who over the years have responded to the cry of the poor. The annual ANCOP (Answering the Cry Of the Poor) Walk was held in Assiniboine Park undeterred by even a very nice weather. Around 600 participants composed mostly of members of Couples for Christ community (all ministries), their friends, special guests and partners. This annual event was held to raise awareness and needed funds for the work for the poor, including providing shelter and child education programs to help lift the conditions of the poor in the Third World countries, particularly the Philippines. Kenya, Nigeria and India. The successful 2014 ANCOP Walk Event raised close to $60,000 which could not have been possible without the support of key supporters, our partners, participants and local organizations, our friends

& relatives. One of ANCOP Canada’s goal for this year is to support the education of 3,000 children from the poorest of the poor and ANCOP Winnipeg was assigned 216 children . ($384.00 per child per year for the Elementary / High School and $768.00 for the College student). We are blessed enough that from the last report that we had from ANCOP Philippines that from the more than 120 ANCOP College students who graduated from the past year we have 2 students who made it to the top 20 CPA Board Exam. Also this year, there will be a free dental mission in ANCOP sites Caloocan City and Ormoc City thru ANCOP Kindness In Action group by Winnipeg Dentist and Hygeinist headed by Dr Tom Colina on Dec 20 to Jan 31, 2014. In 2013 ANCOP Walk, Larry Vickar & Tova donated $25,000.00 through the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba for the Livelihood program and to sustain the Education of the children in the ANCOP Vickar Rotary

Canada’s humanitarian assistance to help the most vulnerable in the Philippines Member of Parliament Lawrence Toet (Elmwood-Transcona) is pleased to share news of $500,000 in funding support to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to address the humanitarian needs of conflictaffected families on Mindanao Island in the Philippines. Mindanao is the secondlargest and southernmost major island in the Philippines. Despite a peace agreement signed in March 2014 between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the effects of decades of ongoing conflict continue on Mindanao Island, where

35

thousands of displaced families live in dire conditions. Mindanao has also been struck by three natural disasters over the span of 11 months, with Typhoon Bopha/Pablo in December 2012, the Bohol earthquake in October 2013, and Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013. Canada is supporting the ICRC operations aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of children, women, and men by providing essential food and medical supplies along with technical assistance to rehabilitate water and sanitation facilities for

thousands of conflict-affected families. “Our Government continues to work with organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross to help save lives in the conflict-affected areas of the Philippine island of Mindanao,” said MP Toet. “Canada and the Philippines share a strong relationship, and our Government will continue to be a partner in the recovery process.” To read more about Canada’s humanitarian assistance to the Philippines, visit http://www. international.gc.ca/.

y a vote of 54-4, the House committee on justice headed by administration ally and Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. junked the three impeachment complaints against President Benigno Aquino III due to insufficiency in substance. The four lawmakers who endorsed the complaints, namely Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares, Kabataan Rep. Terry Ridon, ACT Teachers party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio and Gabriela Rep. Emmi de Jesus, maintained that the President knowingly violated the Constitution when he authorized the diversion of some P144 billion in public funds to other government projects under his Disbursement Acceleration Program, parts of which have been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. A committee report will be sent to the plenary for action within 60 session days. A vote of at least one-third of the 290 House members is needed to finally bury the impeachment complaints against the President. Meanwhile, Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. said the people must continue to seek accountability elsewhere as it is untenable that the P144 billion in DAP funds used as presidential pork is considered by the justice committee not severe enough to merit impeachment. He added that the venue for accountability such as the impeachment process is being shut close by Aquino’s allies.

uess what, readers? I’m finally hitched (as foreshadowed by my previous columns)! It’s been a little over a month since I’ve officially become a member of the “Wild” tribe. Now,

what’s my verdict on the married life? Everything feels a lot different, but also very much the same. Kevin and I had already been living together for a few

years before tying the knot, so we were lucky enough to know what having overlapping lives was really like. Asides from figuring out who pays for what bills, who commandeers the grocery shopping trips and which families we spend time with at what points during the holidays, the transition was – for the most part – smooth. Immediately after our wedding, my husband (I still can’t get used to calling him that, by the way) and I went on a road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles. It was time to reconnect with what brought us to this point in this first place – our relationship. The whirlwind of wedding planning takes its toll on many

Turning off our phones and spending time on the road was the perfect way to learn how to enjoy each other’s company again. I mean, really, truly bask in each other’s presence. Sharing a life with someone is bar none the most exciting experience I’ve had to date. Learning to work together as a team, both romantically and platonically, is the greatest challenge. Thankfully, I have a stellar teammate who bears with me every day, and helps me

becoming a better partner and person in the process. Planning a wedding is fun. Being married is thrilling, and a natural next step for most people in love. But the best part about getting hitched is what remains when all the confetti is finally laid.

MFBC Mayoral Forum

A

ll nine mayoral candidates were invited to the MFBC Mayoral Forum at Sisler High School last Tuesday, August 26th. Coun. Paula Havixbeck, Robert-Falcon Ouellette, Brian Bowman, Michel Fillion, David Sanders, Gord Steeves, Michael Vogiatzakis, Hazem Aslan and Judy Wasylycia-Leis participated in the election's second allcandidates forum. The forum presented MFBC with an opportunity to discover how Winnipeg's next mayor will

influence change in our cultural and business communities. Members and non-members from all areas of the city came to hear the candidates discuss their perspectives and platforms. The candidates discussed a wide range of positions on questions involving Winnipeg's ethnic communities, tendering processes, plans for the city's youth and senior populations, and much more. The MFBC looks forward to participating in the municipal polling on Oct. 22.
