Dressed in traditional Aklan Ati-Atihan costume, Aireen Miaral danced along the McPhillips parade route under overcast skies. Promoting Kidney Health

B

ack in August 22nd at the Garden City Shopping Centre, the Filipino Kidney Health Initiative (FILKHI) along with the assistance from the Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFOC) - Manitoba Branch created awareness on kidney disease prevention. FILKHI gave out informative handouts and kidney stress relievers to the general public along with a chance to win gift certificates from Booster Juice and Subway. "This could not be possible with the help of great volunteers" said Jon Reyes, Board of Director (BOD) of the Kidney Foundation who was joined by Executive Director Val Dunphy and fellow BOD Keith Fontaine. "I am glad we were able to create awareness as I did not not know till I was a BOD that kidney disease was high in our Filipino community."

Reyes has been with the KFOC for 3 years. A very special thanks to Mercy-Anne Guevarra, a kidney donor herself, leading the FILKHI team. (Pictured below holding the Kidney) Please like the FILKHI Facebook page.

Rizal on Reform and Revolution (part 2) by Levy Abad

he fresh ideas from abroad during the time of Jose Rizal cannot be anything but the ideas coming from the revolution in France and the American Revolution, which was also inspired by the former. According to the essay of Elmer Ordonez, Rizal’s readings, as well as those of the ilustrados at the time, included Zola’s Germinal and other Anarchist texts. He furthered that Rizal read a lot of French Literature and particularly liked Alexandre Dumas' Three Musketeers and Count of Monte Cristo. Rizal also read Moliere, Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Napoleon’s memoirs, in addition to his readings of the lives of the Presidents of the United States, Morga’s Sucessos de las Islas Filipinas, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Wandering Jew by Eugene Sue, Beaumarchais’ Barber of Seville, and Marriage of Figaro, which were considered dangerous works and subversive in nature during Rizal’s time. (Reference: The Books that Jose Rizal Read and How It Shaped His Life-Totoy Batotoy) In Rizal’s second novel, El Filibusterismo, the frustrated reformist Ibarra returns in the guise of Simoun, the Jeweller--what Simon calls the “liberal reformer who became an 'anarchist' or “Putschist.” The concept of a Marxist Leninist revolutionary was

not developed yet. ("Rizal and the Literature of the Left" by Elmer Ordonez, Manila Times, Dec. 29, 2007) Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, in a country ruled by Spain. The economy during this time was characterized by feudalism, vast tracks of land solely under the control of a handful of feudal lords. Concepts like suffrage (elections), separation of power, separation of church and state were nonexistent. We have to take note that prior to the Revolution of 1896, two hundred revolts occurred with the intention of breaking the feudal chains. All these concepts came into fruition after the Revolution of 1896 when U.S. colonial rule took over and introduced a distorted version of the ideas of enlightenment to consolidate their colonial rule by using concepts of democracy, republicanism as a facade and reactionary violence to crush the continuing resistance of the Filipino people. What was the role and significance of the Revolution of 1896? After 365 years of Spanish colonialism and successive revolts, Filipinos finally decided to organize the Katipunan as a result of the martyrdom of Rizal on December 30, 1896. Rizal was accused of being the founder of the Katipunan, or Brotherhood of Revolutionaries. In the column of Ambeth Ocampo, “Reform and

September 5-20, 2015

Revolution,” he explained that “the December 15, 1896 Manifesto was used against Rizal both by the Spaniards who condemned him to death for inspiring the revolution, and the pro-Bonifacio groups in our day, is not read in full. Rizal was not against the revolution but felt, rightly so, that it was premature.” He continued that “Rizal is branded a mere 'reformist' because they have not read his letter to Ferdinand Blumentritt from Geneva on June 19,1887, his 26th birthday, that read in part: 'I assure you that I have no desire to take part in conspiracies which seem to me very premature and risky. But if the government drives us to the brink, that is to say, when no other hope remains but seek our destruction in war, when the Filipinos would prefer to die rather than endure their misery any longer, then I will also become a partisan of violent means. The choice of peace or destruction is in the hands of Spain, because it is a clear fact, known to all that we are patient, excessively patient and peaceful, mild, unfeeling, etc. But everything ends in this life, there is nothing eternal in the world and that refers also to our patience.'” Prior to this, Rizal was active in the reform movement abroad. He was a member of La Solidaridad, an organization founded in Spain on December 13, 1888, composed of Filipino liberals and students, aimed to increase Spanish awareness of the needs of its colony, the Philippines. Rizal was also a founder of La Liga Filipina (1892), a progressive organization in the homefront with the purpose of involving the people directly in the reform movement. Both initiatives were designed to be a machinery of the reform movement. The Spanish authorities, threatened by these initiatives, seized on Jose Rizal to punish him for his ideas. We know what happened next, Rizal was martyred and the armed revolt known as the Cry of Balintawak in August 1896 ensued under the leadership of Andres Bonifacio. Balimbings thrive in Binay’s Banana Republic

R

ecently, there was an altercation between Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Vice President Jejomar Binay’s camp over the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile. De Lima believes that the high court’s ruling has set the Philippine justice system back to that of a “banana republic.” But Binay’s camp defended the Supreme Court, saying, “Yes, we’re banana republic, but not due to the Supreme Court,” which begs the question: What exactly is a banana republic? Wikipedia defines it as follows: “Banana republic is a political science term for a politically unstable country, whose economy is largely dependent on exporting a limited-resource product, e.g. bananas. It typically has stratified social classes, including a large, impoverished working class and a ruling plutocracy of business, political, and military elites. This politico-economic oligarchy controls the primary-sector productions to exploit the country's economy.” Does this definition fit the Philippines? Sad to say, it does – every word of it. Yes, Binay was right -- the Philippines is a banana republic. But he should know that he’s part of the plutocracy that rules the country. Yes, he lives it… He breathes it… and he savors it. Indeed, you might say, he was cunningly lucky to have crossed the great divide that separated the impoverished – where he came -- from the rich – what he is now. He’s adept at the game of political musical chairs: a game of “survival of the cheatest.” And to win, a politician must not only learn the tricks of the trade; he must be very good at it. Balimbing A key part of the game is learning the art of turncoatism. In the Filipino vernacular, a “political turncoat” is called balimbing or star fruit, whose cross-section is shaped like a five-sided star. Thus, a person who changes political color is called a “balimbing.” And this goes back to the time when the indios – that’s what the Philippine natives were then called -- were struggling to free themselves from Spain’s colonial rule. In my article, “Balimbing Republic” (July 8, 2005), I wrote: “During the 1896 revolution, there were already balimbings in the ranks of the Magdalo faction of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo and the Magdiwang faction of Katipunan Supremo Andres Bonifacio. Members of Magdalo would switch to Magdiwang and vice versa. After the execution of Andres Bonifacio by the Aguinaldo forces, most of the leaders of Magdiwang joined the Magdalo, mainly for selfpreservation. “During the commonwealth government that began in 1934, there were two political parties, the Federalista Party favoring statehood and the Nacionalista

Party favoring independence. After the independence from the United States on July 4, 1946, the Liberal Party was born from remnants of the Nacionalista Party. The biggest ‘balimbing’ at that time was former Nacionalista stalwart Manuel Roxas who changed his party affiliation to the Liberal Party and was elected President in 1946. “When Cory Aquino took over the presidency after the EDSA revolution in 1986, hundreds of former Marcos loyalists crossed over to the Aquino camp. In 1987, the Philippine constitution was changed extending the presidential term to six years with no reelection. Cory won the presidency under the new Constitution. In 1992, her protector and EDSA hero, Lt. Gen. Fidel V. Ramos, won a presidential term for himself. Again, hundreds of opposition party leaders switched to Ramos’ party. After Ramos, Joseph Estrada was elected and the same thing happened, balimbings defected to Estrada’s party. When Estrada was deposed in 2001 (EDSA II) due to the jueteng scandals, Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo — with the help of Estrada’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Gen. Angelo Reyes, who switched his loyalty to Arroyo — took over the presidency. Estrada was jailed on charges of plunder. Overnight, loyalties changed. “When she ran for reelection in 2004, Fernando Poe, Jr., a movie superstar ran against Arroyo. Poe was ahead in the early part of the campaign, which caused a bandwagon effect with the opposition leaders. However, Arroyo came from behind and defeated Poe in the election. Poe immediately filed charges of cheating against Arroyo. But Poe died of heart attack and Poe’s widow, Susan Roces, withdrew the charges. “Election-cheating is common. There is a joke that says: ‘In the Philippines, there are no losers, only the winner and those who were cheated.’ He who cheats better, wins; and party-switching is part of the political process. “With a government full of balimbings, it makes you wonder if the government really changes when a new President is elected. It’s

all the same banana, or more aptly, the same balimbings running the show regardless of who was elected President.” Switching colors The presidential election in 2016 is no different; perhaps it’s even worse. Today, political parties openly entice members from other parties to switch colors. And if you happen to be a popular actor, comedian or entertainer, party leaders would dangle all kinds of goodies to recruit you. A case in point is the two declared candidates for president, Jojo Binay and Mar Roxas, who don’t have a running mate yet. The two have been trying hard to convince Sen. Grace Poe – Fernando Poe Jr.’s daughter -- to be their vice presidential running mate. But Poe is not inclined to play second fiddle to anyone, not with her high popularity ratings. Although she hasn’t declared her candidacy yet, she already has a running mate in mind – her friend and mentor Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero. Rumors began to circulate that they’re already recruiting personalities from different political parties to fill their senatorial slate. But Poe denied the rumor. Corruption, bribery, and votes With the 2016 presidential election fast approaching, political realignments -- “balimbingan” -are beginning to change the political landscape of the country. “Newbies,” like Poe, are gaining popularity. But don’t take the “oldies” – like Binay -for granted. They know how to win – by hook or by crook. Just the other day, Binay, in one of his campaign sorties, advised the voters to accept “bribe money” from the politicians, saying, “The money belongs to the people anyway, as it comes from the funds of the government.” Was he referring to the P200 million in pork barrel funds he received two years ago? If so, is he merely returning the money he may have stolen from the government in exchange for their votes? Sad to say, with the allegations that Binay had accumulated billions of pesos skimmed from city projects that spanned over three decades when he, his wife, and son took turns as mayor of Makati City, Binay would presumably have plenty of “bribe money” to buy votes for his presidential run next year. That must be the kind of “banana republic” that Binay has in mind. At the end of the day, while the balimbings thrive in Binay’s banana republic, there is still hope that an honest candidate would emerge to bring fresh ideas in government and truly make an effort to deliver the downtrodden from the abyss of poverty.

An Origin of Leche's Having Become a Curse Word or dialects and did not understand Spanish; because, apparently, their lords did not really teach them the details of the language. Every time the Spanish family members spoke, the Filipino nannies simply listened. Then, whenever the babies cried and the parents wanted them to stop crying, they commanded the nannies to "give milk to the baby" to make the baby stop crying. In Spanish, "Give milk to the baby" translates to 'Dar leche para el bebé!'

Let's get social

The emphasis was on the word 'leche,' giving the nanny an impression that it was a curse word because the parent would usually utter this sentence with an imposing tone of voice. The nanny thought that her employer was mad at her and was cursing her. Now, the nanny, upon returning to her own home, when she got upset, she started using 'leche' as an expression of her own frustration or annoyance. Through time, the word, in that context, seeped into the lexicon or lingo of the Filipino people.

In Spanish, 'leche' means "milk"; "gatas," in Filipino. There have been a number of suggested origins of how this word has become a curse word. Here's one of those, just a personal conjecture based on my familiarity with the circumstances surrounding the subject matter. During the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, many Spanish families employed local Filipinos as nannies or househelpers. Of course, these Spaniards spoke Spanish; and the locals spoke their local language

Crowds still came out for the Street Festival!

R

ain is becoming a tradition for the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. Even with the less than ideal weather conditions, the festival saw a record number of parade entries and tremendous support from festival sponsors and exhibitors. Mother Nature did not cooperate last month when buckets of rain fell from the sky and wind blowing over several sponsors and association tents. Luckily, the early morning parade

down McPhillips was completed and main stages performances were done before the rain and wind rolled in. As the rain rolled in, spectators and exhibitors all scrambled for cover in a torrential downpour. Most of the festival attendees headed home soaking wet or retreated into Garden City Shopping Centre hoping the festival performances would continue. By mid-afternoon, the thunder showers stopped and

festival officials continued with a modified program leading up to Jericho Rosales main stage appearance. The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival is the largest Filipino community event in Manitoba and takes a dedicated and passionate team of volunteers to bring it all together. The hard work of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival board of directors, committees, and countless volunteers make it happen. See you all next year!

Torrential downpour couldn’t dampen fun at this year’s Street Festival

Marjorie Dowhos, host of CBC News Winnipeg late night at 11 pm on CBC Television

O

ne of the big festivals I first heard about when I moved here, five years ago, was the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. I heard about the fun atmosphere, the great food, the entertainment and the colourful displays of Filipino culture. Being Filipino myself, I always wanted to check it out, but never had the opportunity to. However, this year that all changed. I was asked to be a float and tent judge for this year’s festival. I was honoured to be a part of the festivities on behalf of CBC Manitoba. I was also excited to see the festival for the first time. The Street Festival was amazing! It was a fun and eye-opening experience. I say eye-opening because for the first time since I’ve lived in Winnipeg, I realized just how many Filipinos call this city and province home. They were all enthusiastic during the parade and cultural performances, and stuck around despite the heavy rain and thunderstorms that hit Winnipeg that day. It was so heartwarming to see the cultural pride on display. It was also exciting to see people outside the Filipino community come out to support and learn about what the Philippines has to offer. CBC Manitoba is a proud sponsor of this year’s Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. We had a booth set up at this year’s festival, and it was so nice to see many people stopping by and checking it out. At the same time, I got to know and meet many people at the festival. Our station is always excited to be a

part of community events, and building relationships with Manitobans. I want to thank the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival committee, especially festival chair Aida Champagne, for being gracious hosts to myself and CBC Manitoba. The volunteers did a great job of trying to keep us dry and warm during that rainstorm. Once again, congratulations on a wonderful event. I look forward to being a part of it again. Maraming salamat!

Upcoming musicfest hopes to bring back OPM

Media agency Carat hopes to rekindle the current generation’s love for the Original Philippine Music or OPM by staging the Fusion Philippine Music Festival. The first-ever Fusion Philippine Music Festival was held at the Mall Of Asia Arena last January. This time Carat is aiming to stage a bigger one next year. For his part, Jake Habitan, Digital Strategist of Fusion added the music festival aims to re-ignite

the Filipino’s love for OPM by letting them know that it’s alive and well. Patacsil and his group are targeting the youth market

through schools. They noted how the youth is very much into social media which they believe will be a benefit to their efforts.

Horoscope You’ll be eager to start your plans or projects although the beginning of the week may need some careful handling. Patience will lead to the things you want to happen. Issues regarding romance or creative ideas can now begin to resolve themselves.

Expressing yourself, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the world come naturally to you at this time. Be cautious though as sharing a secret at the beginning of the week may backfire. Wait a week before making a special purchase for a more positive buying experience.

This is a good time to attend to your inner game. You’ll have the opportunity to be your own coach and mentor that can result in great success. In order to forge ahead, you may need to reflect on your attitude and beliefs. Identify those areas through reflection and meditation.

Try not to assume things early in the week. Allow time to unveil the truth. Doing so can save you from embarrassing yourself. You’ll be open to learning new things and exploring exciting possibilities. Financial and business matters may improve in the days ahead.

Try not to rush into romance this week. Influences around you may bring confusion and misunderstanding. Use this opportunity to reflect on what you are looking for in a relationship. Later in the week, you’ll find an improvement in relationships and finances.

Try to avoid impulse buying early in the week as you might regret your purchase later. Make sure to research and read contracts well before signing and committing to anything. Later in the week, you’ll see signs of improvement regarding your love life.

Be careful who you confide to as they may not have your best interests. You’ll be a positive element to groups in your community and to your friends who are eager to be in your company. The end of the week hints a progress in your goal or ambition.

This week could be a turning point when it comes to your love life. You’ll feel more confident in choosing a love interest or a romantic partner. Your finances will look a lot more promising, too.

Plans of renovation may be appealing to you right now. You will be keen on making changes on your home or even purchasing a bigger property. Avoid making big a decision by the start of the week. Get into details as you may not have all the facts.

This week, you’ll be eager to explore new horizons and is more prepared to experiment with new ideas and opportunities. You can make great progress once you are clear with what you really want. Spending some time alone and reflecting on things may be very helpful.

You will take pleasure in planning ahead and working on what it takes to make your dream come true. Take daily steps to manifest your goals. Don’t worry about the obstacles and opinions that try to counter your plans. Go for it as long as you’re feeling confident in what you’re doing.

A misunderstanding with a partner or a friend could take place early in the week. Take your time to reflect and all should become clear after a few days. Avoid rushing to any decisions, as new information could change the course of things. Don’t worry about asking for what you what. There’s a good chance you’ll get it.

Folklorama 46th Festival Closes The largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world came to a close on August 15, wrapping up two weeks of Folklorama fun across Winnipeg. Folklorama’s 2015 Festival featured 43 pavilions that showcased world-class entertainment, authentic cultural food, informative cultural displays, and as always, warm hospitality from a wide variety of cultural communities. “This year, Folklorama asked visitors to ‘See it All’ – and they certainly did!” says Zaleena Salaam, Folklorama President. “We received so much positive feedback – directly from visitors and through social media – about how much fun people had as they did their best to see it all. This encouraging public response means the world to our 20,000 incredible volunteers. They make the Festival happen, year after year.” Folklorama pavilions featured hundreds of talented local performers who rehearsed for months, preparing their unique cultural performances – from fancy footwork to amazing vocals. These local artists were joined by performers from Brazil, Ireland, Jamaica, Ukraine, and the United States, contributing to some amazing cultural shows. From a tourism perspective, this year’s Festival attracted 120 group tours, welcoming tourists from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, England, Germany, Ireland, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, and St. Lucia. As well, Folklorama once again welcomed visitors from across the United States and Canada, in addition to many Manitobans. Visitors enjoyed a variety of tours with multiple pavilion visits that included cycle, walking and accessibility tours as well as late night and party packages. “There was an unprecedented amount of interest in our VIP Tours,” says Debra Zoerb, Executive Director. “Our walking

and cycling tours were packed, and several VIP Tours were sold out. We also saw in increased interest in customized tours, with staff working to create unique Folklorama VIP Tours based on specific interests.” Festival goers also took advantage of Folklorama’s affordable admissions prices. “With a ticket price of $6 and free entry for children 12 and under, single ticket sales were very popular,” says Zoerb. “We also noticed high interest in our Vickar Automotive Group Fun Packs and Folklorama Mini Fun Packs.” The 2015 Festival drew hundreds of thousands of visitors, with a preliminary estimate of over 426,000 pavilion visits to our 43 pavilions. Many pavilions experienced sold out shows and were extremely pleased with the volume of visitors.

Folklorama would like to thank our funders, the Province of Manitoba and Winnipeg Arts Council, as well as our valued sponsors. Next year’s Festival will be held July 31 to August 31, 2016. Folklorama began in 1970 as a one-time celebration of Manitoba’s centennial but has since grown to be the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world. Developing out of the success of the Festival, the organization offers three year-round programs: Talent, Teachings and Travel. All of the programs bring to life Folklorama’s mission of celebrating diversity and promoting cultural understanding. To find out more, visit www. folklorama.ca. Hot Rod's LONGADOG mobile food cart featured a longanisa pork sausage in an extra long pandesal bun with all the fixings including diced mango and tomatoes, and caramelized onions. A Filipino street festival isn't complete unless there's

authentic Pinoy street food. Pinoy favourites such as Fishballs, Mag Wheels, Walkman, Tenga ng Baboy, and Pinoy style BBQ skewers rounded out the street food menu offering. Even with the rain and thunderstorm, crowds lined up in a 2nd tent at Hot Rod's Filipino Grill for the delicious Filipino food that satisfied their cravings.
