S
till non-stop every Wednesday evening, for the past three weeks we patrolled Burrows and Maples. It is starting to get dark at 8:30pm but thanks to 204FM for donating seven flashlights to 204 Neighbourhood Watch. People keeps on contacting me for their food and logistics donations, and
to volunteer. Every patrol night, tired volunteers feast on delicious food, thanks to donors Emy and Manny Adao of Bakerite, Elmer Aquino, Joselito and Cresencia Urbano, Sweetie Dia, Jay De Leon, Tek De Leon and Kathy Chionglo. In two patrolling evenings at Burrows, we inspected 6

playgrounds. While having our break at Sinclair Community Centre, a desperate father sought our help as he could not locate and contact his 14-year old son. 204 Neighbourhood Watch used the 204FM’s huge network to spread the word, it reached the boy and he was home safe in an hour. Last Wednesday, we patrolled portions of Adsum, Jefferson and Mandalay at Maples. We were overwhelmed! In less than 2 hours walk, we found 38 baggies. How we wished we could cover more areas, but with 13 volunteers that night we could only walk as one group for safety. So, we are calling for more volunteers to patrol with us on September 6 Wednesday. Assembly is at Maples Community Centre 434 Adsum Drive at 5:45pm. Join 204 Neighbourhood Watch facebook group to see our announcements and updates, or email me at Leilacastro.ca@ gmail.com.

Can Donald duck impeachment?
W
ith a belligerent attitude towards his own party, President Donald Trump faces a mounting opposition from his fellow Republicans in just about every move he makes. In particular, Senate Republicans are divided on several legislative issues, foremost of which is the repeal and replacement of Obamacare that Trump has been championing since he started his presidential run. Then there is tax reform that is at standstill. And then there is the “Wall” along the U.S.-Mexico border that Trump wants to build at the expense of Mexico, to which the Mexican government said, “No way.” With Mexico not cooperating in building the border wall that’s intended to stop illegal immigration from Mexico, Trump demanded the U.S. Congress to
pay for the proposed wall along the 1,900-mile U.S.-Mexico border. Estimated to cost between $12 billion and $22 billion, the U.S. Congress is hesitant to appropriate the funds. In frustration, Trump threatened to shut down the U.S. government if Congress fails to fund it. But Congress doesn’t appear to give in to Trump’s demands. But building the wall is just one of Trump’s problems. And he’s not getting any closer to working out a solution with his fellow Republicans, causing a legislative deadlock. On a more serious tone, Trump is the subject of investigation by a special counsel looking into allegations of collusion between Trump’s presidential campaign organization and Russia. Recently, the investigation expanded its coverage to include alleged illegal financial dealings

between Trump and some Russian banks associated with oligarchs close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. As a result, special counsel Robert Mueller asked the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide information on Trump’s financial dealings. Nixon impeachment But while it might take sometime for Mueller to build a legal case against Trump, the U.S. Congress seems like it might take the same route that it did when former president Richard Nixon was investigated during the Watergate scandal. On February 6, 1974, the House of Representatives passed a resolution, H.R. 803, giving its Judiciary Committee authority to investigate whether sufficient grounds existed to impeach Nixon of high crimes and misdemeanors primarily related to the Watergate scandal. This investigation was undertaken to investigate the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, DC. The Nixon administration attempted to cover up its involvement. The Judiciary Committee approved three articles of impeachment against Nixon, for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress. But before the House of Representatives could vote on the impeachment resolutions, Nixon made public one of the additional conversations, known as the “Smoking Gun Tape,” which made clear his complicity in the cover-up. With his political support completely eroded, Nixon resigned from office on August 9, 1974. [Source: Wikipedia] It is interesting to note that it was the erosion of Nixon’s political support that led to his resignation. Since impeachment is a political process, not a legal or judicial process, impeachment would be a subjective issue that would take into account political issues. When Nixon lost his base support, he didn’t have much of a chance to “beat the rap.” In which case, resignation becomes the “honorable” thing to do. Trump impeachment In the case of Trump, impeachment hinges mainly on whether his fellow Republicans in the House of Representatives would give him the political support he needs to avoid

impeachment. The question is: could he muster support from the Republican majority in the House? To answer this question, one has to look at their constituencies. In a Republican “red state,” their representatives might be bold enough to support Trump while a representative from a Democratic “blue state” would vote for impeachment. But the problem is when a Republican represents a “blue state,” which would most likely vote for impeachment to avoid a Democratic backlash during his reelection. The bottom line is: With Trump’s approval rating sliding below 35%, it would be safer for a representative to distance himself or herself from Trump. However, if Trump survives an impeachment, another option of removing him from office – temporarily or permanently -- is to invoke Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, which empowers the vice president and his cabinet to declare a president “incapacitated.” The vice president would then act as “acting president.” 25th Amendment The 25th Amendment, Section 4 states: “Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.” According to the National Constitution Center, “the 25th Amendment was passed to clarify what happens upon the death, removal, or resignation of the President or Vice President and how the Presidency is temporarily filled if the President becomes disabled and cannot fulfill his responsibilities.” Indeed, with all the chatter that is going on now about Trump’s perceived “mental instability,” – some call him “crazy” -- his fitness for the office of the presidency is being questioned.
FilipinoJournal.com
But the question is: Would Vice President Mike Pence go along with the invocation of the 25th Amendment? While it would be a grand opportunity for Pence to ascend to the presidency without going through the election process, it would have the semblance of betrayal of Trump. However, Pence might accede under pressure from Republican stalwarts to take over the presidency. If Trump survives any attempt to remove him by way of the 25th Amendment, then the last resort would be to remove him electorally during the 2020 presidential elections. While it has been done before in 1992 when George H.W. Bush lost in his reelection campaign in a three-way battle royale, an entry of another Republican in the presidential derby could be devastating for Trump. Three-way contest If the elections were held today, there would be at least one other Republican running for president. And like in 1992, the Democratic presidential candidate would win, just like what Democratic Bill Clinton did against the incumbent Bush and the third-party candidate, H. Ross Perot. But a three-way contest could be avoided if Trump loses in the Republican primaries. And this is where he would be fighting for his political life. To win in the primaries, he has to rely on his “base,” which had given him the victory in the 2016 presidential elections. He knows it and it is for this reason that he’s been going to his base in a campaignstyle fashion. But lately, three swing states – Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin – that gave him combined 46 electoral votes, which helped him win in 2016, are now teetering. In recent polls, majorities in these three states disapprove of his job performance. With three years and four months remaining in his first term, it would give Donald Trump a chance to salvage his presidency and gain a razor-thin victory in the Republican primaries in 2020. But first, he has to avoid impeachment, which begs the question: Can Donald duck impeachment?

Ka Luis Taruc and Ninoy Aquino (Last Part) Ramon Magsaysay deserves the title ‘Man of the Masses’. I remember this incident vividly about this well loved president. I was still in shorts and was playing with other kids at the town plaza in my hometown of Porac when a car stopped and a hunk of a man with a buri hat alighted from a car and seemingly sought a direction from an old lady waiting for a ride to Angeles City. The old lady must have been shocked and unbelieving with a her eyes fixed on the tall man. When she was able to collect herself she was so agitated and waved to everyone she saw and started shouting: ‘Hoy, hoy I Magsaysay, i Magsaysay’. I wouldn’t know what was President Magsaysay’s doing in my laid back town, but my young mind was so impressed. When Magsaysay was voted president he wanted nothing more than to achieve peace. But standing in between was the Hukbong Mapagpalaya ng Bayan (HMB) a dissident group led by its Supremo Ka Luis M. Taruc, a tailor from San Luis Pampanga who earlier founded the Hukbo
Laban sa Hapon (Hukbalahap), a guerrilla unit that fought the Japanese invaders during World War 2. He became a member of the congressmen of seven who opposed passages of Bell Trade Act, Parity Rights and the RP-US Bases Agreement. Then President Manuel Roxas reportedly initiated moves to unseat the oppositionist Taruc. He was removed from congress and went back to the hills. There was this young reporter of the Manila Times, the largest newspaper in the country during those years, who in 1951 covered the Korean War and made a good account of himself. It was his passport to fame. The young Benigno S. Aquino Jr. aka Ninoy of Concepcion, Tarlac was invited by Magsaysay to Malacanang and tasked him to seek for Taruc and convince the latter to lay down his arms. There was an arranged meeting between the two on a hillside somewhere in Porac. The young Ninoy was able to convince the dissident leader to surrender. Taruc requested Aquino to send his son Romeo to school.
(As a sidelight, the Aquinos of Tarlac are originally from Angeles City, but the Aquino patriarch, Braulio moved to Concepcion town, then a barrio of Magalang. He had a son named Servillano who became a war hero. Braulio had a son he named Benigno who became a senator and was married to Aurora Aquino. The couple’s most popular son was Ninoy, a junior of his father). As promised, Ninoy sent Romy to College of Medicine at the Far Eastern University, the school owned by Nicanor Reyes, husband of Josephine Cojuangco the older sister of Ninoy’s wife Corazon aka Tita Cory. Romy in my interview with him said he has to take a ten day government exams and should pass the qualifying program of the Bureau of Education at that time for high school dropouts. After finishing his medical studies and passing the board he served for several years in Hacienda Luisita. Ka Luis Taruc was given a long jail sentence. Magsaysay met his untimely death in a plane crash in Manunggal in Cebu province and wasn’t able to redeem his pledge to the jailed Taruc. It was only during the time of President Ferdinand Marcos when he became a free man. He died in his early nineties. Editor's Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga.
Fil-Chinese Chamber bags 3rd SSS Top Employer for NCR
T
he Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) was hailed for the third time as top employer of the Social Security System (SSS) for the National Capital Region’s 2017 Balikat ng Bayan Awards. FFCCII will vie for the overall Top Employer of the SSS’ Balikat ng Bayan Awards in the small account category this September. St. John Biomedics, Inc, a distributor of veterinary products, on the other hand, won in the medium category. SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc thanked the employers who have helped the pension fund to achieve its mission of promoting social justice by providing social protection to the working class. “Without you, we cannot fulfill the mandate given to us under the law. I assure you that the Commission headed by our beloved Chairman Amado D. Valdez and the Commissioners are doing everything to ensure
that the SSS Fund remains robust and viable for the benefit of all its members. I hope that you continue to extend support and willingly cooperate with our programs as we continue to make SSS a financially independent social security institution,” Dooc said. The winners under the small account category together with FFCCCII (SSS Binondo) were Brenton Engineered Products Corp. (SSS Kalookan), Binangonan Cable (SSS Tanay), and AP Securities, Inc. (SSS Makati – Gil Puyat). Medium account category winners together with St. John Biomedics, Inc. (SSS San Juan) were Paramount Vinyl Products Corporation (SSS Kalookan), Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (SSS Recto), and Bora Budget Mart, Inc. (SSS Makati – J.P. assuring the protection of their employees,” Social Security Commission Chairman Amado D. Valdez said. Valdez and Dooc together with NCR Operations Group Senior Vice President Jose B. Bautista led the recognition event held at the Ramon Masaysay Hall, SSS head office in Quezon City last August 17. Bautista thanked the employers, SSS’ kabalikat or partners, for their unwavering support and encouraged them to continue supporting their employees’ right to social protection. “Compliance with the provisions of the social security law is not just beneficial to SSS and its members, but also to the employers as it fosters trust and a harmonious relationship with their employees,” Bautista said. Established in 1995, the Balikat ng Bayan Awards is held annually to honor partnerinstitutions, acknowledging the importance of employers as partners of SSS.

A New Appetite for Guns N’ Roses (Aug. 24, Investors Group Field)
I
had to attend to something important hours before the Winnipeg leg of Guns N’ Roses’ “Not in This Lifetime” Tour, which was held at the Investors Group Field, on August 24, the reason I arrived late. Too bad, I missed the opening act, the Canadian Alternative Rockers Our Lady Peace, which according to a friend of mine who got there early, delivered an impressive and high-energy performance consisting of songs that included “Naveed,” “Superman's Dead,” “Innocent,” “Paper Moon,” and
“Is Anybody Home?” Better luck next time; but at least, I was able to enter the venue and find my seat just in time for Slash, Axl Rose, Duff McKagan, and the rest of the beloved American Glam Metal band’s set. Guns N’ Roses dished out a powerhouse setlist, beginning with “It’s So Easy,” “Mr. Brownstone,” the relatively new “Chinese Democracy,” and then the sure stomper “Welcome to the Jungle,” which made the crowd lose their wits and scream their lungs out.
The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
Despite the worry of many of the fans, considering the band’s long hiatus from the limelight, all the songs were in great shapes. In fact, the twin guitar works of original lead guitarist Slash and rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin’s more-than-able replacement Richard Fortus made the songs even better. Fortus (previously of the New Wave bands Love Spit Love and The Psychedelic Furs) was a revelation. He complemented Slash’s acrobatics effectively. “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” “You Could Be Mine,” “Used to Love Her,” and “My Michelle” had never been that sweeter, sleeker, and punchier. Original bassist McKagan was in his elements, even lending his voice to a couple of covers. Rose’s low-register and high-pitch voice was in fine form, and he was in a pleasant disposition. He had really changed his ways, no longer the volatile version of his old self, at least based on his overall performance during that night. Rose on the piano on “November Rain” was gorgeously beautiful. One could almost imagine also Slash’s image in the song’s classic music video as he replicated the epic ballad’s anthemic adlib, which had surely swooned the countless lovers that cool, breezy evening. The anticipation of some fans that the show might be cancelled or would start hours’ late, obviously because of Roses’ notoriety in the band’s ’90s prime, was ultimately put to rest. Rounded up by Dizzy Reed, on keyboards and piano; Melissa Reese, on synthesizers, keyboards, and backing vocals; and drummer Frank Ferrer, another Love Spit Love alumnus—Guns N’ Roses finished off their Winnipeg concert with four encores—the muchloved ballad “Patience,” a cover of The Who’s “The Seeker,” “Don’t Cry,” and the apt high-octane closer “Paradise City,” leaving the audience brilliantly in high heavens, with their sonic appetite certainly satisfied. Guns N’ Roses definitely remains to be among the greats

in the pantheon of Metal music, still up and running high. All the fans need right now is a new album, especially that the core members Rose, Slash, and McKagan are together again and currently in good camaraderie and musical affinity with each other, considering the well-publicized falling out of Rose in the past from the rest of the band, who soldiered on with Guns N’ Roses by himself with a revolving cast of musicians since 1998 to the trio’s reunion only last year. So, it is really timely for every fan to raise his glass to celebrate the new appetite for a new chapter of Guns N’ Roses. Final Note Formed in 1985, in Los Angeles, California, United States, in the midst of Glam Metal’s commercial peak in the 1980s, Guns N’ Roses caught the music

world by storm with the release of its top-selling and critically acclaimed debut album, 1987’s Appetite for Destruction, which spawned a slew of hit singles led by the band’s most popular song, “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” Four more albums followed—1988’s G N' R Lies, 1991’s Use Your Illusion I & II, and 1993’s "The Spaghetti Incident?"—until Rose’s fallout from his original bandmates in the mid-’90s. Rose continued performing with various musicians using the band name, releasing the controversial album Chinese Democracy in 2008. By the mid2010s, core members Rose, Slash, and McKagan began seeing each other again, effectively patching whatever differences they had in the past…and the rest, as historians say, is music history.

Urban Fishing Derby at The Forks
T
he annual GNA Urban Fishing Derby drew over 300 anglers to The Forks on Saturday, September 2. The banks of the Assiniboine River were lined with competitors vying for prizes in the Adult and Kids categories. This free to enter event gives away a top prize of a boat and trailer every year. A huge channel catfish is what is needed most years to have a chance at Top 3 in each division although there are also occasionally big carp or sturgeon that make it into the standings. Dozens of kababayan anglers came out to compete and volunteer once again this year. The derby raised over $1600 for the Never Alone Foundation and Marymound. Organizer Todd Longley wanted to pass along thanks to our community for their continued support and active participation in local fishing activiites. No FAAM members made it into the Top prizes this year, but young angler Damon Espinosa won the Kids Conservation Award for his diligent fishing the whole
four hours of the event. Alyssa and Kayla Labaupa won first and second place in the Media category as well. For anyone interested, join the Filipino Anglers Association of Manitoba group on Facebook for more information about all things fishing in our province.

UPAA-MB Holds Palarolympics in Assiniboine Park By: Isabel Buenaobra
O
n August 19, the UP Alumni & Associates in Manitoba (UPAAMB) held Palarolympics in the Assiniboine Park. About thirty members and their families came to the sports festival which included games such as tumbang preso, sipa, Chinese garter, agawang base, and sack race. A picnic laid out in the park, as well as board games and sungka were made available to alumni and their family members. The UPAA-MB began in 2007 as an informal online chat among UP graduates. In 2012, the association became formal and was incorporated to have the following objectives: To promote camaraderie and cooperation among members in a way that upholds the ideals of the University of the Philippines: honour, excellence, leadership and holistic human development; To engage with Filipino and other organizations in various initiatives that promote cultural diversity, social unity and cooperation; To assist members and the Filipino community, in Manitoba and in the Philippines,
in improving opportunities for education and training that will help develop their full potential; and To give due recognition to alumni and other individuals of Filipino heritage for their exemplary achievements and contributions to the Manitoba community. Current UPAA-MB Chair Lourdes “Des” Casañares, mentioned that since its formalization in 2012, the association has assisted members get their professional certifications; linked volunteers with social causes such as the Siloam Mission (focused on people experiencing homelessness and poverty) and Winnipeg Harvest (not-for-profit food distribution and training centre); organized fundraising events to support victims of disasters (such as Yolanda victims in 2013); provided bursaries/scholarships to deserving UP students back home; undertaken seminars on entrepreneurship and starting a business; organized sports festivals, picnics, and sponsor-anew-immigrant family with food hampers around Christmas.

The UPAA-MB has currently 170 listed members. For 20172018, its board of directors includes the following: Lourdes Casañares (Chairperson), Jennifer Merin (Secretary), Danjae Medina (Treasurer), Jeremy Malana (Membership Committee Head), Norman Aceron Garcia (Fundraising Committee Head), Darren Gonzales (Social Responsibility Committee Head), and Edwin Madera (Information and Communication Committee Head). Des hopes its members this year to support the plans for 2017-2018 which include the following: fundraising events for scholarships for UP students; promotion of sustainable small scale agriculture and introducing floriculture; discussions on cross cultural learnings; picnics and social activities to provide that sense of belonging to Filipino newcomers and immigrants; seminars to assist newcomers to integrate in the workplace; and networking for employment and volunteering opportunities. On the Saturday morning of Palarolympics, while some members cajoled each other over the scores, others huddled, comforted one another and said, “Kumusta na? Kung kelangan mo ng kausap, andito lang kami.” And that’s what the school spirit and associations are all about. Being there when you’re needed the most.

Handicraft exporter says good-bye to molds which are shipped mainly to the US. “We ship 10 container vans of handicrafts every month,” reports Tan. “We would not have stayed in the export market if we had not decided to use the DOSTFPRDI dryer. The facility reduced our drying time from 1-2 weeks to only 2-4 days, and because it could dry wood to the right moisture content, it drastically decreased the attack of molds,” she continues. “There were times when, due to poor drying, a whole batch of handicrafts would be covered with molds, and returned to us by a client. We had to pay big fines for those! Thanks to D O S T- F P R D I , we no longer go through such bad experiences. The dryer was the right tool at the right cost which came to us at the right time.” (Rizalina K. Araral & Wency H. Carmelo, 23 August 2017)

Horoscope Something could occur that would mean you’re unable to follow through. You may have a lot to do, but you could find too much of confusing. It might be best to test the waters before making any commitments or promises, especially if they’re important. And with emotions could also come to the fore, which might make it harder to know what’s best. Quiet into the flow and you’ll fare much better.
Pleasure options could call out to you ahead, especially if you’ve been busy on the home front. After a period of hard work, you might prefer to do something more relaxing that can act as an energizing and boost your spirits. Someone you don’t see often could unexpectedly show up on your doorstep, and this could be an excuse for a get-together or grand outing.
There’s a focus on your home zone, so they could offer a chance to get your place chipper and wonderful. This might involve removing clutter, redecorating, or reorganizing, all of which you’ll take in walk purposefully. They could bring one family issue to a head, so stand back and resist the temptation to get involved if you can. Things should be much more settled, making it easier to choose a course of action.
PAHALANG
This can prove very rewarding and bring many opportunities to get your message out to the world and market your goods and services. It looks like are going to be very busy, especially when it comes to general administrative tasks, writing, research, and online activities. You’ll still need to look out for mixed messages and potential mistake, when things begin to return to normal.
This is your chance to find balance and restore a sense of calm. The emphasis falls on a silent, more spiritual sector of your chart, so the cosmos is encouraging you to slow down and stride yourself. But to do so, you might need to resolve and release issues that have been going on for some time. It’s your chance to clear the slate and refuel, and both are necessary if you’re to make progress.
This can be an opportunity to take stock, but this is best done, which could encourage you to throw caution to the wind and make a decision to spend lavishly on something you feel you need. Also you could decide it’s time for some cost-cutting measures, because the focus on your sector of money and values is enhanced. You might realize you made a mistake, so keep the receipts and paperwork just in case.
It might be easy to read more into a conversation or gesture than is there, which could prove embarrassing. Watch out for mixed messages that could add a touch of confusion to a developing bond or friendship. However, if you can avoid making promises, having too many expectations, or putting this person support, you might be able to avoid any problem. Your perspective will be much more down to earth and you’ll feel much more grounded.
You’ll feel truly encouraging you to enjoy being you. This is not the time to hold back but to openly express you needs, wishes, desires - and opinions, of course. But it might be wise to refrain from committing to an idea or opportunity until when the stellar landscape will be much more stable. You’ll also have a clearer idea of what’s what,
You could be quite competitive when it comes to grabbing key opportunities or applying for jobs. The focus on your sector of goals and career they could put you firmly in the spotlight. Take your time making decisions when some change influences could cause misunderstandings. Wait your time and read the fine print to understand exactly what you’re getting into. You’ll likely feel confident enough to make a choice.

You might be eager to get away from it all and relax in different surroundings. If you haven’t had a vacation they could see you making some travel arrangements. Also, be careful when organizing your itinerary or traveling from place to place, changing direction and there is also a dreamy. Confusion or misunderstandings could cause a wrong turn.
They could encourage you to make deep-seated changes that mark a turning point for you. At the same time, the present focus could also see you looking into money matters with a view toward smooth your present situation and getting a better return on investments. But go easy if you need to make a major purchase, as you may not get as great a deal as you think.
Interactions could be active and more intense. You might be more energetic and willing to resolve issues that may have lingered on for far too long now. Things could get quite excitable around the time, so go easy. Avoid doing or saying anything that you might regret later. If in doubt, leave it for another time when you’re more settled.

Senator Enverga Reflects on his Fifth Anniversary in the Senate Dear friends, As I reach my fifth anniversary of being appointed to the Senate of Canada, there is much to reflect on and celebrate from my time thus far in Canada’s Upper Chamber. Many milestones and achievements have been reached over these past five years. I have been keeping very busy in the Chamber, continuing my active involvement in every facet of the parliamentary process. I also continue to sit on several standing committees, all of which have demanding legislative agendas which are aimed at strengthening each and every bill that passes before it. I am pleased to announce that since I first entered the Senate Chamber, many strides have been taken to strengthen Canada-Philippines relations. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to partake in several important bilateral announcements between the two countries, and have also worked closely with many representatives and officials of the Philippines, including several Philippines and Canadian Ambassadors, whose tireless work has helped in fostering the relationship between our two great countries. Furthermore, I have been fortunate enough to travel with numerous Canadian delegations, strengthening Canada’s relationship with countries around the globe. Through these instances, I have personally witnessed significant government-to-government and private sector commitments being made and carried out; a benefit to all. I have also had the great opportunity to share and celebrate many joyous moments and events with you, the people of Canada. I cherish the time I have been able to spend celebrating this great country we call home. For further details and information on my first five years in the Senate, please visit my website, SenatorEnverga.com, or find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SenatorEnverga. My duty as a Senator is to represent the Province of Ontario and to represent Filipino-Canadians from all over the country, to give them a voice at the federal level of government. I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to have worked for you over the past five years and for all of your prayers and support. I greatly look forward to serving you for many more years to come! I am proud to represent you in the Senate of Canada. Sincerely, The Hon. Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Senator

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
The expletives that emanate from the mouth of the President are per se the news depending who the media reporter is that filed the news. Digong, the endeared nickname of President Duterte, despite of his overwhelming majority over his closest rival, is not universally admired. His detractors is perhaps outnumbered by his political supporters; but, the former are so vociferous and have the backing of some mainstream media that publishes the faults of President Duterte; rather than spread to the reading public the accomplishments of his administration. The war against illicit behaviour altering drugs, to my mind, is the most misunderstood program being implemented by President Duterte. Detractors complain loud and wide the ongoing anti-drug campaign that many got killed including some innocent bystanders. From the start, the President presented his platform of government that if he is elected to power, he will "declare war" against illegal drugs, against massive corruption, and against spiralling criminality. Every time I attend both academic or economic forum and the talk hovers around news articles on the increasing tally of loss of human lives both from the government side and enemy camp, I always rebut what is there to understand about killing and dying in war?
War entails deadly armed conflict. In the subtleties of engaging in such fights, it is inevitable someone gets killed including innocent bystanders that were caught in the cross line of fire. Admittedly, the police ranks were infiltrated by uniform wearing scalawags. But this abnormality is not sufficient ground to compel President Duterte to forego his war on illegal drugs. For one, the President is addressing this age old problem. Policemen, who were figured out in a firefight in the regular performance of their duty, have the full support of the President. Two, however, if the law enforcers grossly violated the established rules of engagement, the erring policeman will have his comeuppance of the full force of the law. The proliferation of mind altering drugs is not only harmful to individual addicts; but, injurious to the society over all. The users eventually turn to become pushers to feed their addiction. When addicts ran out of resources, they resort to criminal activity. Because of the unbridled wealth the drug lords amassed, criminals have the financial clout to bribe generals, judges, fiscals, governors, and congressmen as protectors of their criminal activities. With this scenario, how shall peace loving citizens live when criminal elements rule?
Seeing Myself TO LIVE FOR THE MOMENT IS THE PREVAILING PASSION - TO LIVE FOR YOURSELF, NOT FOR YOUR PREDECESSORS OR POSTERITY. LITTLE HAS CHANGED SINCE THOSE WORDS WERE WRITTEN. LITTLE HAS HAPPENED TO CHALLENGE OUR OBSERVATION THAT "SELF-ABSORPTION IS THE CLIMATE OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY" As our society moves increasingly away from biblical roots, many forces conspire to fill the place most societies reserve for GOD with "self". Values are determined by such ideas as "loving yourself is the greatest love of all"; I need to feel good about myself". "Self" has become the ultimate source of truth and value, and we are told that the answer to life is found in our selfesteem, our positive self-image,

our unconditional positive selfregard. Humanists, paradoxically strip us of our true dignity as creatures formed in the image of GOD when they call us to affirm that there is nothing higher and more dignified than human existence. The human self, they claim, is the source of true value. New Age selfists have come along with different worldview but a similar anthem. "Find the good within you. There is no GOD 'out there'. Discover your inner divinity and the awesome power of the self". What we believe and feel about ourselves obviously is important. The problem lies not with the concepts of "selffulfillment" or "self-image" per se. Only when HOD is truly seen for who HE is can we see ourselves for who we are. Meaning comes only when life is theocentric, not egocentric. That is a truth presented powerfully in

The criminal apparatus must be destroyed to build crime free communities. President Duterte is not against the poor. Rich or poor, powerful or not, officer or lower rank if they are part of the apparatus that threatens the safety of law abiding people - President Duterte have no qualms to carry out his solemn campaign promise to destroy them all within the duration of his term. Drug cartels must be demolished. President Duterte is neither intimidated of the threats of impeachment, nor coup d’Êtat, nor assassination. His singular focus is: fulfil his promise to the Filipino people. The platform of government of President Duterte is not merely partisan politics. The Filipino people must unite to rally with him. Local opposition is hell bent to discredit his governance. External forces are scheming ways how to take him down since he pronounced his independent foreign and economic policy upon assumption of office. President Duterte is perhaps foul mouth in his tirades against criminal elements and foreign powers that interfere in the internal affairs of the homeland. But his cause - fighting the illegal drug menace - must be championed by all Filipinos; otherwise, the birth land would be in peril when criminal drug cartels will take over in governing the Philippines. one of our Savior's most familiar stories, the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, found in Luke 18:9-14. To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable. "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'GOD I thank you that I am not like other men - robbers, evildoers, adulterers, - or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'GOD, have mercy on me, a sinner. "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before GOD. For everyone who exalts himself, will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. When we see ourselves in the light of GOD's forgiveness, regeneration, and justification, we see our "selves" biblically and healthfully. Self-fulfillment is not the product of the self-absorption and self-edification. To know GOD truly, to bow before HIM humbly, to believe HIM gladly - those are the pillars of a godly and realistic self-image. TO GOD BE THE GLORY.

Arnel Pineda with Rivermaya’s Perf de Castro Regent Casino Event Centre November 24, 2017 By now, perhaps every Filipino Pop/Rock music lover knows already who Arnel Pineda is. Why not, when he is the current lead vocalist of the classic Pop Rock band Journey, who got invited to join the group by none other than one of its founders, guitarist Neil Schon? This year, while Journey is on recess time, Pineda has decided to work out some music of his own. And now, he is touring to promote his second solo album, 2016’s AP. The Winnipeg leg of Pineda’s own musical journey will be held on November 24, at Regent Casino Event Centre. And what’s more exciting about this gig is that he will be backed up a group of seasoned musicians whom include longtime session bass player Don Morales, Barbie’s Cradle/Pupil’s drummer Wendell Garcia, and Rivermaya’s original guitarist Perf de Castro, who has also carved his own name as a solo Classical-guitar virtuoso. Thus, the concert will be sort of a two-in-one extravaganza— Journey plus Rivermaya–flavored fun. Come and get your tickets now! Contact Ardie Gervacio at 204-227-9348.
