Raiders of Public Funds
A
ny administration would always aim to control congress for obvious reasons. One of them is smooth passage of pet measures of the palace . And of course, shielding the man in Malacanang from possible impeachment. And money, lots of money is the way to do it. Now comes Senator Ping Lacson. His gun blazing and told the Filipino people that ‘pork runs into hundreds of billions’. It’s hidden, and only Malacanang is blind not to see it. That hidden pork is a source of kickback. No need to emphasize. Everybody knows it. How do these greedy people with sticky fingers take advantage of public funds? That instead of those tax money be channeled to social services and opportunities cascading to the benefit of communities, the money wind up in their bank accounts, here and abroad, and in their personal vaults. Aren’t you wondering why they’ve no flourishing profession nor business, yet they are so rich? When they were not yet in congress, they were contented with second hand cars and one car-garage house. Now they have
houses in Manila and maybe in the United States and are in the name of kins or trusted friends. The one who were born to riches are the greedier ones. Their lust for money is a bottomless pit, so to speak. Sila ang masiba . A senator for example gets 200 million pesos per year as his ‘pork’. This is tucked in every annual budget. If the senator served for 12 years,( he or she got elected in his/her first term consisting of six years and got reelected for another six years) and multiply Ph200 million by 6, it would mean Ph 1.2 billion. And if in the average he/ she pocketed thirty percent, the sum total is Ph360 million. Cool. Parang tumama sa lotto ng tatlong beses. A congressman gets Ph70 million per year as his ‘pork’. In many cases, many solons serve three terms, meaning a good nine years. Multiply 9xPh70 million =Ph630 million. And assuming only 30% is the kickback it will sum up to a cool Ph189 million. The income from pork is just one source of a corrupt member of congress. Their insatiable greed takes them lobbying for more projects and make follow ups at

Alice Cooper Shocked and Rocked the Cummings (August 28, 2018, Burton Cummings Theatre, Downtown Winnipeg)
T
he drizzle last night did not deter the expectant crowd from trekking to Burton Cummings Theatre to behold Alice Cooper’s electrifying freak show. Too early for Halloween, yet Cooper made the atmosphere so, and to great effect—like how he always used to anyway; and that was how the shows of the King of Shock Rock so bloody special. Fifty years on to his music career, 27 studio albums—from
1969’s Pretties for You to last year’s Paranormal, and countless gigs all around the world, yet the King of Shock Rock remains in top form, dishing single after single from various highlights of his enduring rockstardom. With a powerhouse cast of backup musicians—Ryan Roxie (guitar, backing vocals), Chuck Garric (bass, backing vocals), Tommy Henriksen (guitar, backing vocals), Glen Sobel (drums,

the Office of the Budget Secretary for the special release order (Saro). Pressure is commonly applied. Case in point: The solon has a point man who gets in touch with the director or district engineer of the Department of Public Works. The same point man picks the contractor and advise the DPWH who is the chosen contractor. To ‘legitimize’ the rigged bidding only those picked contractors are issued bidding documents. Those who are hard headed and refuse to cooperate are given hard times and for invented reasons are disqualified from participating in the bidding. The winning bidder is already known even before the bidding process started. From the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) all the way to the district engineer/ director to the solon and few more functionaries along the way, more than fifty percent of the total cost of the project went to the pockets of these ‘raiders of public funds’. Congressman alone pocketed 30%. The rest was distributed equitably among the ‘public servants’, aka public thieves. End result? Mga puto sekong karsada. After two years craters and cracks on our roads. Blame the ‘raiders of public funds’. Editor's Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga percussion), and Nita Strauss (guitar, backing vocals)—Copper brought the house down with an equally powerful setlist that included “Brutal Planet,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “Under My Wheels,” “Billion Dollar Babies,” “Be My Lover,” “Lost in America,” “Serious,” “Fallen in Love,” “Woman of Mass Distraction,” “Poison,” “Halo of Flies,” and “Feed My Frankenstein.” Final Note Overall, the Winnipeg leg of Cooper’s 2018 North American Tour was a blast. The only disappointment that I had, albeit only on a personal level, was that he did not sing my mostfavorite Cooper song—“I Never Cry.” But then again, as soon as I arrived back home and settled in, I just took my CD of Cooper’s ninth album, 1976’s Alice Cooper Goes to Hell, and played it on headphones and closed my eyes, imagining that I was still at the Burton. And, in fairness, that did the trick! I never cried, after all.

How high would Sara go?
O
n August 13, 2018, the most anticipated political event happened. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, struck on her own by forging a nine-party super-coalition of three national parties and six local or regional parties. The three national parties are the Nacionalista Party (NP), Nationalist People’s Party (NPC), and National Unity Party (NUP). The six local parties are: Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), a regional party founded by Duterte-Carpio not too long ago; Ilocano Timpuyog; Alyansa Bol-anon Alang sa Kausaban (Abaka); Aggrupation of Party for Progress (APP); Kambilan; PaDayon Pilipino (PP); and Serbisyo sa Bayan Party.
Joining forces with DuterteCarpio are big political players Sen. Cynthia Villar of the NP and former President and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Former members of the Lakas-KampiCMD and allies of Arroyo formed the NUP, while tycoon Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr. founded the NPC when he ran for President in 1992. President Duterte’s idea Duterte-Carpio told the media that it was her father, President Duterte, who gave her and her supporters the go-ahead to form HNP, which makes one wonder: Where is President Duterte’s ruling party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP– Laban), in the whole scheme of things?
The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
According to an HNP stalwart, the common denominator between HNP and the nine political parties is their support for Duterte’s policies. Duterte-Carpio also denied that she would be running for Senator in 2019. “I am not running for senator. We are just really trying to unite everybody who wants to help the administration of President Duterte until 2022,” she said. Hmm… Something is wrong with her statement. A few days ago Duterte announced that he was thinking of stepping down if Bongbong Marcos or Sen. Chiz Escudero would be willing to take over the presidency. While it’s not constitutionally feasible for either one of them to succeed Duterte without going through an election, Duterte, for all practical purposes, is now a lame-duck president. Interestingly, Duterte’s ruling party, the PDP-Laban, was not included in Sara’s super-coalition. Does that mean that Duterte would be distancing himself from PDPLaban of which he is the Chairman? It’s further complicated when the PDP-Laban split into two factions, both of whom pledging their support for Duterte. But Duterte’s dilemma is: How can he work with two competing factions whose purpose might be diametrically opposite? There is no Solomonic solution to his dilemma other than unifying the two factions again, which might not be possible at this time. And that’s probably why Duterte asked his daughter to form the supercoalition to help his administration until he steps down in 2022. In other words, the nine-party alliance would be Duterte’s political vehicle for the rest of his presidency… and beyond. It is expected that Sen. Cynthia Villar and Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos would be on the super-coalition’s senatorial slate in 2019. Two other prospective senatorial candidates who were at the signing of the agreement are Senator JV Ejercito and Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano, a former senator. Others being considered and were personally endorsed by Duterte-Carpio are Sen. Sonny Angara, presidential spokesman Harry Roque, former Chair Francis Tolentino of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and Secretary Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications Operations Office for the Senate. Interestingly, Gloria was not included on the list of senatoriables.
House coup d’état During Duterte’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July, then Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez was ousted in a party revolt led by Arroyo with the help of DuterteCarpio. Arroyo then took over the Speakership. As a “consuelo de bobo,” Alvarez was retained as PDP-Laban’s Secretary-General, a powerless party position. What was once Duterte’s united and powerful super-majority party, within a day – nay, within an hour – PDP-Laban imploded when the party split into two factions. One faction had around 200 congressmen who sided with Arroyo, and a second faction with 12 congressmen who sided with Alvarez. Needless to say, Arroyo’s blitzkrieg assault on Speaker Alvarez was swift and no sooner had the spectators in the chamber realize what was happening, Arroyo was sworn in as Speaker. Could it be that Gloria’s takeover of the Speakership disrupted the seemingly united PDP-Laban? Senatoriables While Duterte-Carpio had said that she is not running for Senator, it is not set in stone. She might reconsider running if there is an overwhelming move to draft her. My crystal ball shows that she would eventually accept a draft. What about Arroyo, whose term in the House of Representatives will be termed out in 2019? My crystal ball has been blinking like a speeding ambulance lately. Yes, Gloria would accept a nomination and if nobody nominates her, she’ll use a trick from her bag of tricks, which makes one wonder: Why? Well, where else would she go? With Federalism gasping for dear life, she has nowhere to go. That leaves the Senate the only place where she can go unless she’d go for the presidency. But that is wishful thinking. But the Senate would bring her closer to the apex of power. Once she’s elected Senator, what would it take for her to grab the Senate Presidency, the third in the presidential line of succession? Easy. As corrupt as she was once, she’d just have to buy her peers in the Senate with lots of promises. Heck, Janet Napoles pulled the Pork Barrel scam some years back, and she was just a fixer! Who’s going for the top? In the case of Imee Marcos, she hinted to journalists not too long ago of resurrecting the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL),

the political party of her late father. There were talks that if Bongbong fails to go for the presidency in 2022, she’d go for it. And that would put her at odds with a lot of ambitious women politicos including Arroyo and DuterteCarpio. How about Duterte-Carpio? She would be the Duterte’s political heir in 2022 when his presidential term expired. The question is: Is she prepared and ready to take over where her father takes off? She might not be as prepared to run for president but she is ready. She has the gumption to fight an intense and contentious presidential campaign. She got that from her dad. But she should also be aware that some of her rivals in the presidential derby might be her allies today. As we all know, political turncoats or balimbings would emerge from the murky shadows of political expedience. But if Duterte-Carpio plays her cards right, and with her father’s strong political influence, she just might end up with an unbeatable Royal Flush hand. But there is a caveat when you’re playing highstake politics. If you fall, it would be with a big thud in which you’re unlikely to recover. While Sara Duterte-Carpio would still be considered a rookie in national politics, her dad could be her mentor, which would give her a boost. And with three strong and seasoned politicians – Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos, and Vice-President Leni Robredo, it would be a grand battle royale in 2022. Ultimately, the nagging question is: How high would Sara Duterte-Carpio go? Right now, my crystal ball is fuzzy sometimes, which means she’s still undecided. But there were times when it’s crystal clear that she was aiming for the top. But 2022 is still four years away; a lot of water will still flow under the bridge. But the midterms are just around the corner in November 2019. Why doesn’t she go for a Senate run? It would be a warm-up run to the presidential race in 2022. But here's the kicker: If Bongbong wins in his recount petition against Robredo and he’s going to take over the presidency as Duterte had planned all along, this could pave the way for a Bongbong-Sara tandem in the 2022 presidential election.

Mailbox Faith
F
AITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 Whenever I mail a letter, it's an exercise of Trust. Let me explain what I mean. When I write a letter to a distant friend, it's impossible to deliver the letter myself. I need the help of the postal service. But for them to do their part, I have to drop my letter in the mailbox first. I can't hang on to it. I have to place it in the mail slot and let go. Then I must Trust the postal
service to take over until my letter is delivered to my friend's home. Although I can't see what happens to it, my Faith in the postal service assures me that my letter is as good as there. Likewise, whenever we're faced with a problem, our Faith is challenged. Knowing that it's impossible to resolve the difficulty ourselves, we recognize our need for GOD's help. First, though, we must go to HIM in prayer. Until that moment, we're still holding on to our problem. We know the
situation won't get resolved until we let go and commit it to GOD's Hands. Once we let go, we then must Trust GOD to take over until the problem is resolved in HIS Way. Although we can't see what HE's doing, our Faith is "the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1), the assurance that HIS work is as good as done! Help us Lord to give our burdens to Your tender, loving care; Grant us Faith to Trust You fully, knowing that each one You bear. TRUSTING GOD TURNS PROBLEMS INTO OPPORTUNITIES.
Panelo questions congressional validity of Trillanes amnesty Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo pointed out there was no publication of the resolution of Congress giving concurrence to the amnesty proclamation given by former President Benigno Aquino III to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV as required by law. President Duterte has withdrawn the amnesty given to Trillanes for failure to meet the minimum requirements, and authorized his arrest and prosecution in connection with two failed uprisings against the Arroyo administration.
Proclamation No. 572, issued last August 31 and published last Tuesday, has revoked the Department of National Defense (DND) ad hoc committee resolution No. 2 granting amnesty to Trillanes for involvement in the 2003 Oakwood mutiny and the 2007 Peninsula Manila Hotel siege. Trillanes has denounced the amnesty revocation as a form of political persecution. He declared that he would not resist arrest or flee as he insisted that he complied with the requirements for the amnesty program.
Preparing for post-secondary life
F
or young adults, summer is typically spent preparing for college or university in the fall. If you are a parent or a student, lots of questions may be running through your mind about academics, campus life and what to expect in those first few months of school. It is an exciting time, but can also be filled with concern about the unexpected. Being prepared can help with the transition. The transition can be even tougher for international students as they need to settle into life in a new country as well. Taking the first steps to set yourself up for success is a great way to feel at home faster. Four things a student should keep in mind: 1. Get involved in campus life. Whether you are commuting from home or have moved to Canada for your studies, getting involved in social activities on campus can help you adjust. Joining social activities, interest clubs or sports teams are a few examples of getting involved outside the classroom. Check your school’s online website portal to learn more. 2. Keep active and take time for yourself. Adjusting to a new routine will take some time. Between managing classes, assignments and a social life, scheduling some much-needed “me time can help maintain a healthy balance while staying focused. Eating balanced meals, having a regular exercise routine that works for your schedule and getting

enough sleep each night, will help keep your mental and physical wellness on track. 3. Use resources available to you. Universities and colleges are filled with incredible resources, many of which are free to you. Resources range from guidance counselors offering help with academic questions, to an international student office that helps students navigate life on campus in Canada. These services are offered for students to use, so remember to take advantage of them while you are a student. 4. Build a budget. Keeping finances on track is another part of transitioning to post-secondary life. For many students, this may be the first time you will need to manage your own finances. If you are an international student, you may have many questions about banking in Canada. A great first step is speaking with a financial advisor about tips on keeping your finances in order throughout the year. Find more information for international students at www.rbc.com/ newcomers.

Waimea Canyon, "Grand Canyon of the Pacific"
N
icknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" by author Mark Twain, the Waimea Canyon is a large canyon stretching 14 miles long, 2 miles wide and more than 3,000 feet deep located on the western side of Kaua'i, the Garden Isle, fourth largest and oldest Hawaiian Island with amazing geographic diversity. A counterpart to Arizona's icon, Waimea Canyon is a true gem of natural wonder you must have to see to experience its majesty enveloped in variegated hues of red, purple, green, brown, and blue complemented by waterfalls and
frequent rainbows depending on the weather and a time of day. Waimea is Hawaiian word for "reddish water", a reference to the erosion of canyon's red soil which can be seen along the road getting to the canyon. Formed by a series of prehistoric lava flows from volcanoes, earthquakes and forces of wind and water, including the narrow Waimea River that snakes through the bottom of the canyon. Waimea River, the longest river in the Hawaiian Islands, is the only navigable river in all of Hawaiian archipelago framed by lush vegetation and mangrove at its banks.
The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
Although there are two main roads you can take to get to the canyon, we turn up Waimea Canyon Drive (Hwy. 550) at the town of Waimea. The Canyon Drive, a rim road and narrow, is scenic and has quite a few curves with some great lookouts along the way overlooking the coastline and the mountain landscape. One popular stop overlooks a small waterfall surrounded by Waimea's popular red dirt soil. The canyon road leads us to the most popular lookout areas that include the Waimea Canyon Lookout and the Puu Hina Hina Lookout that both offer incredible panoramic views of the deep valley gorges, rugged crags and crested buttes. From Puu Hina Hina vantage we can see all the way down to the Pacific Ocean from atop the canyon walls. Additionally, the lookout provides us the opportunity to get a clear view of the Ni'ihau island, the Hawaiian "Forbidden Island" where time has stood still and the only three places in the world where technology has not yet moved in. The first time we try to head up the gorge it's already fogged in and can hardly see anything in front of us. The second time we head up in the morning for the best views of the gorge when the canyon's vibrant colours are at their most vivid. Beyond Waimea Canyon we enter Koke'e State Park to visit the Koke'e Natural History Museum, the interpretive centre highlighting the natural history of Kaua'i and the island's native plants and animals. There are miles of numerous hiking trails on the mountain to traverse both for beginners and seasoned hikers offering vistas of the canyon, waterfalls, the ocean,

and even rare birds. With Jer, MarieAnne and our granddaughter Cassy, I successfully finish for almost three hours hiking the Waimea Canyon Trail with a red warning: hazardous cliffs - this trail contains this hazard that the ground may break off without warning and you could be seriously injured or killed. For this I have a certificate of hiking the Waimea Canyon Trail! A must-stop on the way back from our visit to the Waimea Canyon for our dinner is the "Shrimp Station" at Waimea, home to the best coconut shrimps on the planet - fresh succulent shrimps dipped in a secret batter, then rolled
in fresh coconut flakes and fried to perfection. We finish the day indulging in frozen Hawaiian shave ice (shave, not shaved) traditionally served in a conical paper (or plastic cup) with multiple flavour and a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled over the top with sweetened milk.

Horoscope You might want to try painting, music, or poetry, but it’s more likely that you’ll turn that inspiration toward your home. If you’re planning to refurnish or redecorate, this is the start. Creative inspiration could come from either your own past or from history. Your taste and creative sense are operating at a high level.
If you’re traveling by car, expect road construction and backedup traffic. Travel of any kind might be virtually impossible. Airports could be jammed, flights delayed, and planes troubled with mechanical problems. Stay home if you can. If you must travel, take plenty music and books to keep you occupied while you’re waiting. You’re likely to go nuts otherwise.
Don’t spend much time working on experimental projects and don’t put your money into anything but gold, land, or blue-chip stocks and bonds. This isn’t a good to invest in anything. You probably wouldn’t lose everything, but it would be a long time before you saw a profit. Concentrate on what you know is secure now. There will be better ways to wheel and deal.
PAHALANG
A love partner could be shadowy. This might be the kind of when no matters how many times you draw your mate’s attention to the doughnut; he or she still sees only the hole. The glass is always half empty, never half full. Your beloved will probably be this way all day. Don’t let it drive you crazy. Try to see the humor in it. That will help you, anyway.
Your home could be empty. Other household members may be away and you could find it depressing. Instead of enjoying alone, you could feel like the walls are closing in around you. The only answer is to go out for a while. Take a walk or visit some bookstores or antique shops. Don’t go home until you’re too tired to do anything else. Try to have fun.
You tend to be curious and you’re always trying to learn more about your many interests. But you could be eager to research a subject but be unable to find any information about it no matter how many libraries or databases you explore. Ignore it. You’ll only get frustrated. Watch some television. At least you’ll get a few laughs.
Something is bothering them terribly, and they don’t seem to want to talk about it. Someone close to you might be uncharacteristically silent. You’re willing to listen or help, but don’t try to convince your friend into sharing. Use your intuition to sense what’s going on and do what you can to alleviate the situation. Your efforts won’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.
You may have been forced to attend too many of these recently, and now there are even more coming up. The need to attend to business or networking obligations disguised as parties could get to you. You afraid going to a place you don’t want to go, eating food you hate, talking pleasantly with people you can’t stand. Decline if you can. Life’s too short.
This might come as a shock, because you thought there was plenty there. Financial worries might come up. You may check your bank balance and find that you have little money. Before you panic, ask whoever’s in charge at the bank to double-check the records. It’s probably a computer error. It shouldn’t take long to correct, and you’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief.
You might be so feeling down that you don’t even want to get up. It might not be a good idea to stay home, however. Try to find some tasks to distract you. At some point get out in the open air and take a walk, preferably through a park and near water, if possible. You’ll get the endorphins going and lift your spirits considerably.
You might lapse into daydreams, think about personal matters, and feel guilty because you aren’t doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Any work today could require a higher level of concentration than you can gather. On like this it’s best to focus on routine tasks you can do automatically. That way, your mind can wander. That’s the only way you’ll make it through.
This is a good time to make a move. Your mind is clear and your sensitivity focused now. Don’t let insecurity or fear keep you from follow your dreams. Realize that action you take doesn’t need to be a bold outward movement in order to be effective. In truth, quite the opposing is true. You can accomplish a great deal by turning thought and energy inward.

Caring for our Environment Session

September 5-20, 2018
Pearl of the Orient Pavilion wraps up another successful year at Folklorama
Contributor: Ting Mallari
O
ne .breezy and sunny afternoon on July 28, 2018, a bunch of kids and young adults gathered not for your typical summer picnic but to learn more on how to care for the environment. You read it right! Cultivating environmental awareness among the youth is at the core of this summer activity entitled “Caring for Our Environment”. The session was held at the Sir William Stephenson Library in Winnipeg and attended by 24 youth and adults alike. The program consisted of a mix of games, videos and discussions that centered around important themes such as the following:
•The basic 3Rs --- reduce waste, reuse resources, and recycle materials •Climate change •Endangered Species •Practical steps the youth can take to be environmentally responsible Organizers of this event were all volunteers with the same heart for raising environmentally responsible youth who will be the next caretakers of Mother Earth. The group is spearheaded by Ramon Faustino Sales, Jr., together with Joanne Viviezca, Jane Amora-Remolacio, Karla Atanacio, Rizalina Cortez and Ting Mallari. Special thanks are also due to Ronald Remolacio for his valuable support.

t was a lazy afternoon, I was at Bakerite with friends enjoying the freebie hot pandesal with Creamela peanut butter. Gina Tolentino walked in the store. She is 5’2”, petite and resembles a famous Filipina celebrity. I told her that she looks like Alice Dixon. “Gina is a truck p to spend your credit to budget driver!” said our common friend. I immediately sent Gina an FB friend request. I told her that I’d like interview her and write her story. Gina came to Winnipeg in 2001 with a working visa. She initially worked as a live in care giver. To Gina, it was just the entry point to her long term plan. She’d like to eventually permanently settle in Winnipeg with her husband and four sons. Gina had no choice but to re-plan everything, and to accept that she’d still be alone in Canada in the coming years. She also had to find ways of increasing her earnings. How did you transition to the profession of driving big trucks? “I met a kababayan who was a trucker. My father talked to said kababayan to request him to help me shift to his line of work. Our kababayan told me that the only potential he saw in me was that I have a driver’s license. But he was optimistic. During the first few days I was training, I was so nervous. I was not driving back home. I only learned driving when I came to Winnipeg. Out of frustration and nervousness there where times I would get off the truck while on road and kick tires. In 2005 I got my Class 5 driver’s license and started as a trucker with a co-driver. In 2007 I got my Class 1 license. In 2016 I started driving as a solo driver. Never in my dream did I see myself as a trucker. In the Philippines I finished Bachelor of Science with Major in Business Administration. I even have MBA units.” In the Philippines, I know that it is different because truck

driving there is not a high paying job. Can you explain more about the truck driving career here in Canada? How much do truck drivers earn? “In the Philippines, people land on truck driving job because they did not finish college or university. Here, it is considered a highly skilled job. The lowest pay that a regular employee hauler gets is around 3k dollars per month net. There are those who earn 4K to 6k per month net. If owner/operator, it is really a huge income. Another advantage with truck driving compared to other field of work (that pays the same) is it took us shorter period of time to complete the required education. There is another perk If you are truck driver, you get to see places. It is like doing a long drive for a holiday, but less the expenses.” I know a lot of men who are aspiring to be truck drivers because of the good pay. When I tell fellow Filipinos that I know a Pinay solo truck driver, they are shocked. What can you say of such reaction? “I think people should stop saying they are surprised when they learn that there are women in this profession. The job is hard, but there are ways to make the work easy. An example is when doing the pin to pin, where you need to drive the truck backwards and you need to raise the dolly. You can put oil to easily move the dolly arm. If it still does not work, use a hammer. There also are people who are willing to help. Just be careful who you will approach, it is for your safety. It also is best to exhaust first all
means because asking anyone for help. I actually see a lot of women truckers who are not Filipinos. They are the ones who told me that in this kind of this profession, you can retire early.” How do you deal with boredom while driving? “(It is a matter of) discipline. There are also music and audio books. If it is a stop, a lot can be done like do clean up and read books.” What challenges do you encounter in this profession? “As a solo driver, when on the road and I see a Filipino truck driver, I feel that I have a savior. But sometimes I also feel the opposite. Challenges are there, and because I am a woman I feel that I am treated differently that I cannot comfortably say that I feel respected and safe in my workplace. When I am home and needing to make a phone call to inquire from a fellow truck driver who happens to be male, some people tell me that it is not appropriate for a woman to initiate that phone call. Such advice puzzles me and not helping me grow in my profession. Being a minority in terms of culture and gender in this profession, I wish that there are more support available for women truck drivers like me. Though there is support available from an existing multicultural organization for women truckers, perhaps if more Pinays will be embarking on this profession and will be supporting each other, a lot in my work situation will change for the better.” On Gina’s fifth year in Canada, her two older sons finally joined her. Her husband and two younger sons followed after another 2 years. “My long separation from my family really challenged us. But we are all together now here in Winnipeg. Kanya kanya lang krus tayo sa buhay. Dapat din ay palaban ka. (Each of us has a personal cross to bear. But you have to be a fighter.)”
Gina’s children.
At present, Gina Tolentino is the only Pinay solo trucker in Winnipeg.
