BIBAK and Filipino Morden residents grace the Annual Morden Corn and Apple Festival parade
A
well-known Winnipeg Filipino cultural group, BIBAK, together with the more than 150 Filipino residents in Morden, Manitoba, joined the parade celebrating the annual Morden Corn and Apple Festival last August 24, Saturday. Marcos Simpao, one of the organizers of the parade says: “We have been joioning the festival since 2015 to showcase our cultural heritage, and the camaraderie of the more than 400 Filipinos living in Morden and to give back to the Morden officials and residents for welcoming us into their community. And with the enthusiasm and the happy faces of the Filipinos and the unique performance by the BIBAK dancers, the Morden residents would know how happy we are,
and sharing to them a glimpse of the culture of our country.” BIBAK, founded in 1994, and one of the most unique and artistic performing groups in Winnipeg (some members live in Morden), stands for 5 provinces in the North Philippines and these include: Benguet, Ifugao, Bontoc (now Mt. Province), Apayao and Kalinga. Its traditional dances celebrate good harvest, health and peace. Added to the attraction in the parade is Manny Pacquiao’s look-alike, Richard Sapida who received so much attention. After the parade, a Fiesta typecelebration was held to celebrate another successful participation at the annual Morden Corn and Apple Festival.

points, 12 rebounds, four steals) and another strong performance from PBA rookie CJ Perez (17 points, 7 rebounds), Angola outworked the Filipinos in overtime to win their last game in Group D. The Philippines' 3-point shooting failed to go out on a high note as Gilas made only 10 of 46 attempts from behind the arc. On a positive note, their transition offense netted 18 fastbreak points. They also grabbed 20 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points. However their poor defense and execution at the end of the regulation period and extension denied coach Yeng Guiao and his boys a reason to celebrate during their World Cup campaign. Gilas Pilipinas thus concluded the group round without a victory
and will now travel to Beijing for the classification phase. Angola, for its part, finished with a 1-2 slate. The two teams will play Iran and the loser of the game between Puerto Rico and Tunisia in Group N.

Manitoba Leaders’ Debate Highlights Election Season by Kris Ontong
CBC Manitoba held a Leaders’ Debate at their Portage Avenue studios on August 28 in connection with the September provincial elections. Invited were the leaders of the four main political parties, namely Progressive Conservative (PC) leader and Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister, New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Wab Kinew, Liberal leader Dougald Lamont, and James Beddome for the
Green Party of Manitoba. CBC Manitoba, CTV Winnipeg and Global Winnipeg formed a media consortium which fielded a panel of journalists from each organization. Among the panel were CTV’s Jeff Keele, CBC’s Marcy Markusa and CJOB/ Global’s Richard Cloutier. Joanne Kelly, a journalism instructor at Red River College, moderated the 50-minute verbal sparring among the leaders. Representatives of
various media groups who were not part of the consortium also received an invitation to cover the event. This publication was part of that group, and sent the team of Ron Cantiveros, producer Donna Medina-Cantiveros, and this writer. The coverage team did a pre-debate broadcast via Facebook Live and interviewed CBC’s Bartley Kives to explain his role as fact-checker and its importance in holding the party leaders accountable for the veracity of their claims. As the debate went underway, the external media followed the proceedings in a viewing room. Right out of the gate, the three other leaders went after perceived front-runner Pallister and grilled him on the PC’s consolidation of the province’s health care system and the recent downgrade of Manitoba’s economic outlook by the Conference Board of Canada. After the leaders’ questioned each other, they then answered questions from the panel of
journalists about health care, the environment, and crime and drug addiction. Among the key statements made were Pallister’s pledge that the PCs will balance the budget by 2022, two years earlier than previously projected; Kinew’s promise to re-open the emergency services at Seven Oaks and Concordia, and Beddome’s appeal to elect a Green Party representative to the legislature. A media scrum was held in the same studio right after the debate. One after another, the leaders re-emerged to answer questions from members of the external media. First up was Liberal leader Lamont, followed by Kinew, then Pallister, and finally Beddome. They were asked about how they would rate their rivals’ and their own performance during the debate. They also added details to their responses that were cut short due to time constraints. Overall, the debate was peppered with crosstalk among the leaders as they countered one another’s statements. As for audience perception, CBC’s Austin Grabish wrote about the reactions of body language experts who were asked to observe the party leaders during the debate. According to the article, the experts stated that Kinew came across as ‘polished’, Pallister as ‘flustered’, Lamont as ‘a little too casual’ because of his attire and demeanor, and Beddome coming off as lacking confidence in a number of subjects. It remains to be seen whether or not this Leaders’ Debate
will draw more voters to the polls compared to the average turnout in 2016 of 57.43% as posted by Elections Manitoba. As for the rest of the candidates running in the elections, they have twentynine days to campaign in their respective ridings after Premier Brian Pallister met with the Lieutenant Governor on August 12 to formally call for the province’s 42nd elections. Six candidates from the Filipino community are running for seats. They are longtime MLA Ted Marcelino of the NDP running for re-election in Tyndall Park, the PC’s Jon Reyes previously the MLA of St. Norbert now running for Waverley, NDP’s Malaya Marcelino taking up the torch from MLA Flor Marcelino in the new riding of Notre Dame, Kelly Legaspi also of the NDP for the Agassiz riding, Liberal John Cacayuran for McPhillips, and Edda Pangilinan of the Manitoba Forward Party running for the Burrows seat. Advance voting began on the morning of August 29 and runs until September 5 in more than 300 locations throughout the province. The regular schedule of the provincial elections is on Tuesday, September 10.

T
hroughout history of mankind gardens have been feast for the senses and quiet refuge and spaces for reveries and meditations or contemplations allowing people to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. There has always been a link between man and flowers in the garden as American playwright and poet laureate of Vermont, Robert Frost, expresses in his poem "Lodged" - "The rain to the wind said, You push and I'll pelt, They smote the garden bed,
That the flowers actually knelt, And lay lodged though not dead, I know how the flowers felt." The iconic Butchart Gardens of Victoria, British Colombia, a National Historic Site of Canada as a remarkable example of 20th century estate garden, is one of the ten most beautiful gardens in the world along with the Monet Gardens of Giverny, France and the Gardens of Kent, England. For over 100 years the gardens have been a stunning depiction of flora, trees and shrubs as

expression of art and culture! A must-see oasis when visiting beautiful Victoria, set on 55 acres (22 has.) of privatelyowned land with a full-time staff of 50 gardeners, all experts at deadheading (removing spent flowers), and 26 greenhouses, the gardens originally started with Robert Pim Butchart and his wife Jennie who migrated to the west coast of British Colombia to quarry limestone necessary for Portland cement production. When the limestone quarry became exhausted Jennie smothered the abandoned pit with soil and turned it into a garden, now the Sunken Garden. Ownership of the gardens still remains with the Butchart family with their great granddaughter Robin Lee Clarke as managing director. Walking in a clockwise direction we visited first the main highlight of the gardens and the beloved area of the landscape, the Sunken Garden cloaked in lush green and colourful blooms of red, white and yellow and the Ross Fountain before heading to the Concert Lawn and into the Rose Garden of approximately 300 varieties of roses and then straight ahead to the Sturgeon Fountain and into the Japanese Garden that gives a display of reds, oranges and greens with Japanese bamboo and maples emerging from moss-covered beds and with waters bubbling in a pond. Then down to the Star Pond and the Italian Garden which is home to a gelateria, bronze-cast statue and flower-studded pond.
The Butchart Gardens are open year-round, in all four seasons plus one, the Christmas Season winter (January to March) when the gardens are bursting with thousand of blooms; spring (April to June) with hundreds of bulbs and colours and scents of spring; summer (June - September) with floral splendour and when the concert lawn stage comes alive with a variety of performing artists; and autumn (September to November) with the vibrancy of autumn when Japanese maples turn russet, gold and red. The 5th season is the Christmas Season - the magic of Christmas with displays of holiday wreaths, garlands, outdoor ice skating rink, and the Twelve Days of Christmas. The Butchart Gardens is located on Vancouver Island, north of Victoria at 800 Benvenuto Avenue, Brentwood Bay. It is easily accessible via a scenic drive from Victoria.
We`re coming from Vancouver, so we take the BC Ferries from Tsawwasen Terminal to Swartz Bay and follow the signs to the gardens. Peak season is July and August. Best time to visit (it takes an hour and a half to two hours to see the gardens) is early in the morning. Be among the more than 1 million visitors each year to experience the Butchart Gardens, the gardens of five seasons.

Miss Galaxy Internationals 2020, she is already a winner just by representing the country and a pride to the Filipino community being the first Filipino-Canadian representative. "Competing in the International Galaxy Pageants as one of the flag carriers had brought me out of my comfort zones, one of which is to model
a gown in front of an international audience. I also met a lot of amazing people from across the globe throughout my journey and we became friends until now, “ shares KC. KC’s family was with her throughout the whole journey. Her father said, “KC's experience is one that cannot be forgotten
because at her young age, she was able to give pride and prestige to the country as young beauty queen and honour to the Filipino community. This only proves that Filipino beauty is still one of the best in the world and we believe that this will open many opportunities for her.”
