Christmas Season in Regina

L

ast December here in Regina was a glorious Christmas time celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Just before Advent, we were involved in setting up the beautiful nativity scene in front of the Blessed Sacrament Church. We hosted one of the nine ‘Simbang Gabi’ at St. Mary’s Church, an activity Fr. Dan Rafael started four years ago. We had all kinds of Christmas parties to go to after Mass. We had caroling too. By we, I mean the Filipino Knights of Columbus and the members’ respective families. The Santo Nino Council #12415 of the Knights of Columbus is a very vibrant council in Saskatchewan. Since its charter in 1999, it has been awarded the most prestigious annual K of C Star Council Award eight times. The Star Council Award is based on a program of activities in the areas of church and vocations, family, community, council, and youth as well as the promotion of insurance and membership. At 180, the council has now the largest membership in Regina among 16 councils. Because about 110 of its members are of Philippine descent the council has sometimes been called the Filipino council in Regina. One of the anticipated activities of the council is the Christmas caroling that we do in December as a fundraiser and a

means to bring cheer to Filipino homes and to many care homes around Regina. In the recent Christmas season, we raised over $1200, by singing at almost twenty places. There are usually about fifteen carolers (including some significant others) and our repertoire includes common carols such as “Joy to the World,” “Jingle Bells,” “Happy Christmas,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “O Holy Night,” “Silent Night,” “Feliz Navidad”; and several Filipino carols like “Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit,” “Pasko Na Naman,” and “Himig ng Pasko.” The group was led by Past Grand Knight and guitarist Jim Alvarez and his wife Susan. Interestingly, our group has several non-Filipino Canadians who learned to sing the Filipino songs. At most senior care homes, the carolers would sing before a room full of the residents wheeled in by caregivers. At Sunset Extendicare Home, the group went from wing to wing and ward to ward, singing as we went along. It was very touching to see the glow, and sometimes tears, on the faces of the old folks, who often didn’t have any visitors. At the family homes, the hosts invariably treated the carolers to sumptuous snacks (arroz caldo, puto, bibingka) and drinks. An interesting development came up at the home of Santo Niño Knight

Rey and Ann Dimaano who had invited friends and families. Because they are Cebuanos as well as several carolers, a request was made for the group to sing something in Visayan; so we sang “Kasadya Ning Takna-a” to the tune of “Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit.” For those who don’t know Bisaya, here is the lyric of the carol with my own best Filipino translation of it. Kasadya Ning Takna-a Kasadya ning takna-a (Kaysaya ng oras) Dapit sa kahimaya-an (Lapit sa kaligayahan) Maoray atong makita (Para bang ating nakita) Ang panagway nga masadya-on (Ang mukha na masasaya) Bulahan ug bulahan (Mapalad na mapalad) Ang tagbalay nga gi-awitan (Ang maybahay na nangagsiawitan) Awit nga halandumon (Ng kantang kilala) Sa tanang Pasko magmalipayon (Sa lahat maligayang pasko) Chorus Bag-ong tuig (Bagong taon) to page 7

2010 is the year of Glory, of Royalty, of Fun and of Excitement... by Rod Cantiveros

T

he 2010 Winter olympic gold medals are the highest achievements received by the Canadian athletes especially when Sidney Crosby scores the goal which turns the whole countryfrom coast to coast -into a frenzy of celebrations and exaltations. Indeed, Canada, the host country, has been in the 9nth cloud even during and after the game. In the local front, Olympic fever hits winnipeg when some Filipino Canadian carry the Olympic torch

and when the popular Brakada performs the torch relay ceremony at the Forks. The spirit of giving is shown by MACFFA and FCTPAM when these groups of Filipino volunteers extend their arms to help the Haiti victims. The City of Winnipeg’s Citizen’s Equity created a new award to honour the legacy of the late Rosalinda Linsangan Natividad Cantiveros. The annual award focuses on the youth whose initiative and involvelment for

self-betterment and helping others. Emelda Eradukunda, from Ruwanda; and Michael Beaulieu, a former poster child, are the 1st recipients of Rosalinda Linsangan Natividad Cantiveros Courage Award. Human Trafficking walk headed by MP Joy Smith, Kildonan-St Paul, serves as an awareness of the crime. Later, the private bill of Ms. Joy Smith becomes a law. At the Philippine Military Academy accepts ‘short’ applicants to 5’ from 5’4’ for males; and 5’2’ for females. Brig. General Francisco Cruz, chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines wants to “increase the level of quality of new batches of soldiers. In the entertainment circle, John Lloyd and Bea Alonzo become the hottest love team in the Philippines. Robin Padilla and Mariel Rodriquez are back together from abroad. Philippine election is the hottest topic especially when Noynoy Aquino decided to run for president. Noynoy Aquino and Jojemar Binay win the presidency and vice presidency respectively. Later, he wants to be called as P-Noy. Manny Pacquiao, a boxer icon and number 6 in sports ranking millioniares, becomes a congressman: from the bloody ring to the political arena. And to top them all, Pacquiao scores big against Mexican boxer, Antonio Magarito. Local entertainment scores many pluses when Joseph Sevillo, former Winnipeg actor, got his dream role as Angel in RENT. Sevillo receives a critical acclaim from his very convincing performance. And Mimoza Duot, a multitalented young singer, qualifies as one of the YTV’s top 6 and her participation leads to some contracts for recording in Toronto. 2010 Folklorama becomes an

amazing race for Myra IbabaoValmonte when she becomes the 1st Filipino Journal Ambassador who visited to capture the unique Folklorama Spirit. Queen Elizabeth thrills Winnipeg when she unveils the marker at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. Her one-day visit in Winnipeg seems to be enough for us to sing: “God Save The Queen”. And to excite the homesick Filipinos, Vickar Jeepney, direct from Manila, is unveiled at the PCCM with Larry and Tova Vickar together with the kababayans and PCCM officers and board of directors. Local politics is hot in 2010. To have an official Liberal candidate for the federal byelection for the Winnipeg, North, Kevin Lamoureux gets his wish when he wins the nomination against Councillor Pagtakhan. And to pause for the civic election, Lito Taruc runs for the councillor for the Daniel McIntyre ward. He places 4th.Councillor Mike Pagtakhan bags the third term for Point Douglas. Federal byelection becomes the news of the day when Julie Javier runs for the Conservative Party against Kevin Lamoureux of the Liberal and

Kevin Chief of the NDP. Kevin Lamoureux extends his political might from Inkster riding to Ottawa for Winnipeg North. And 1st time for an ethnic paper, Ron Cantiveros, CEO and president of Molave Publishing, publisher of the Manitoba and Alberta Filipino Journal, Filipino Wedidng Guide and Filbusiness Directory, is granted a one-on one interview with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. What a heavy 2010 is For the 1st time, Elder Abuse has been discussed during the conference sponsored by the Knights of Rizal and Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers Inc. The Innovative Cultural Approaches in the Prevention of Elder Abuse (ICAPEA) program receives $100,000 grant from Human Resources Skills and Development Canada under the New Horizon for Senior Program. The KOR and MAFTI joint initiative targets the elder abuse in the Asian communities....and to welcome 2011, The Filipino Journal celebrates its 25th anniversary of publication. Finally, a glimmer of hope

inally, after a roller-coasting decade of uncertainty, instability, and volatility, there is a glimmer of hope that 2011 would usher in an era of certainty, stability, and vibrancy. President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III said during the Rizal Day ceremony, “We’re not just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. In certain sectors, we can already feel the light, the warmth of the new beginning.” Indeed, his exuberance and optimism are buoyed by the high “trust” ratings the people have given him in spite of several embarrassing incidents and diplomatic faux pas that his fledgling administration experienced during his first six months in office. He seems to have a Teflon skin that deflects the criticisms – and mud -- thrown at him. Barring anomalies of corruption and questionable transactions involving his appointees or himself, P-Noy should be able weather most, if not all, of “storms” that would come his way. Perceived as honest and incorruptible, it would really take a major, major scandal to break down his “invincibility,” which is buttressed by the legacy left by his parents – Ninoy and Cory Aquino. For as long as P-Noy’s “trust” ratings would remain high, a performance below par wouldn’t necessarily diminish the people’s affection for him. However, the office of the President comes with vulnerabilities that could bring the occupant down if he or she failed to contain corruption and deliver the people from the bondage of poverty. The late dictator Ferdinand Marcos found out – albeit too late – that the use of brute force was not enough to keep him in power. In contrast, the late President Ramon Magsaysay proved that friendly – and sincere

-- persuasion could disarm the enemy. “Gordian Knot” The question is: Would P-Noy settle for a place in history that would border on mediocrity or would he strive to be an “Alexander” and untie the Philippines’ complicated “Gordian Knot” that has kept the country in a state of economic disarray and moral decadence? But unlike Alexander who sliced the knot in half with a stroke of his sword - known as the “Alexandrian solution” – and conquered the known world in the fourth century BC, P-Noy could untie his country’s “Gordian Knot” by the power of persuasion. So far, he has yet to succeed. There were some incidents during his first six months that P-Noy might have wished he’d have handled differently. He’d probably wished that he did a few “easy” things during the August 23 hostage-taking crisis to project him as a “hands-on” take-charge leader that Filipinos love to idolize. He’d probably wished that he listened to those who advised him to let go of DILG Undersecretary Rico E. Puno whom he protected amidst allegations that he was receiving jueteng payola. Had he removed Puno, it would have sent an electrifying signal to all his appointees that they are expected to be above board and beyond suspicion. Puno’s refusal to name the jueteng lords’ “feelers” who approached him on the jueteng lords’ behalf raised “red flags” about his involvement with them. He’d probably wished that he did not boycott the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony for Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo for his “for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.” He reasoned that he wanted to spare the lives of five Filipinos in death row in China.

However, he didn’t say that those five condemned Filipinos were sentenced to death for “drug trafficking,” an illicit activity that has reached epidemic proportions in the Philippines. Criticized by human rights’ groups, P-Noy said, “It’s not their call to make the decision. It’s my call.” Now, that’s arrogance! While it was indeed his call to make, did he have to rub it in? Makes one wonder if a feeling of invincibility had gotten to his head? Economic renaissance? P-Noy had every reason to exude optimism and confidence. The GDP grew at 7.9% in the first half of the year during Arroyo’s last six months in office; and it grew at 6.5% in the third quarter during P-Noy’s “first 100 days.” Economists have projected the growth for 2010 to be at least 7%. P-Noy said during the Rizal Day commemoration that his government had registered a budget surplus of P500 million last November when a deficit of P6 billion was projected at that time. “And we didn’t achieve that by tightening our belts and those that needed funds were no longer funded so we can window dress. All [items] that needed funding were funded but still we had a surplus,” he said. Bravo! The question is: Can the Aquino administration sustain a 7% growth in seven years? “747” economic program In October 2003, I went to Manila with a group of Fil-Ams to attend a State Dinner for President George Bush hosted by thenpresident Arroyo in Malacanang. Our group paid a courtesy call to the then-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Jose De Venecia. De Venecia gave us a 27-page book titled: “747: A Program for Economic Takeoff Toward Sustained Growth.” It was the result of a study commissioned by De Venecia in 2002. The “747” program was designed to generate seven percent growth for seven years in order to achieve a “Philippines without absolute poverty.” The book identified seven strategic programs as key to its success, to wit: 1) Rural modernization; 2) Creating a world-class service sector; 3) Promoting domestic competition;

Visit our Web site - www.FilipinoJournal.com - Now on

Filipino Journal

4) Magnets for foreign investment and development aid; 5) Enhancing the assets of the poor, 6) Resource Mobilization; and 7) Political and administrative modernization. Had then-president Arroyo adopted the “747” program in 2003, she would have ridden the country of “absolute poverty” by the time she stepped down in 2010. With P-Noy off to a good start in 2010, he could achieve what Arroyo failed to achieve if he could sustain a 7% growth through the end of his presidency in 2016. However, it is easier said than done. Like Alexander of Macedonia, P-Noy has to untie the Philippines’ “Gordian Knot” to bring in an era of peace and prosperity. Balancing act Recently, P-Noy received an unsolicited advice from Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, the former president of the influential Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). Lagdameo said that P-Noy “needed

7

to be discerning when it came to the pieces of advice he was getting from the people around him.” He suggested that P-Noy replace some of his “weak” Cabinet members and that he should do a “balancing act” -- that is, “Listen to what everybody has to say and pick up the best elements for the good of the country.” During his inaugural address, P-Noy acknowledged that the people were his “bosses.” It behooves him then to listen to them… to hear what’s in their minds. And after he listens to his “bosses,” he could then make his call. That’s the right thing to do. That’s wisdom. P-Noy knows that a vast majority of Filipinos have high hopes for his success. Ultimately, his success would be every Filipino’s success; however, his failure would be the nation’s failure. Finally, after a decade of turmoil, there is a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel.

f you are starting or expanding a business, one of the issues you will have to deal with is the location. In many cases, business proprietors like you will rent or lease space from a landlord. he Career Internship program at DMCI offers students an opportunity to participate in a 30 hour practicum with mentors in a professional capacity ie: veterinary, medical research, marketing displays, banking, architecture, engineering, pharmacy, teaching, etc. The practicum provides the students with an opportunity to get a birds-eye-view of a profession of their choosing. The program can also assist students in making decisions regarding post-secondary education

prior to registering for a faculty or special program. Many students find the program very rewarding and establish very positive relationships with their mentors. Students interested in applying for the program can do so in April/ May of Grade 11. The process consists of the application, interview, selection process and enrollment in the Career Internship program. The program is offered to students entering Grade 12.

Take Our Kids to Work is a provincial wide selected day where Grade 9 students attend work with a parent, relative, or community placement through the school. The program provides students to observe what their parents/relatives/neighbors do for a living. The community based placements expose students to 3 or 4 career opportunities: aviation, culinary, web page design, electronics, service industries to name a few. The day generally proves to be very informative and educational for the students province wide.

Dennis Trillo feels bad on MMFF’s failure to acknowledge Jennylyn Mercado

Philippine Entertainment News

ctor Dennis Trillo did not minced words when he stated that he was greatly disappointed with the way the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival’s “Gabi ng Parangal” turned out.

Angel Locsin still waiting for Mr. Right

The actor was obviously referring to the incident when his girlfriend Jennylyn Mercado did not merit even a best actress nomination from the MMFF committee for her performance in “Rosario.” Trillo however rebuffed talks that Mercado was badly affected by the MMFF snub. He said her girlfriend actually did not expect anything and their presence during the awards night was to give tribute to the success of the film festival. The actor admitted that he retty actress Angel Locsin comforted Mercado in his own little claimed she become a mature way because for him, she deserves person after being single for the best actress trophy, let alone a two years and is now is ready for a nomination. new love in 2011.

The lead star of the hit TV series “Imortal” who had a two-year much-publicized romance with actor Luis Manzano, also admitted that there were times when she missed the feeling of being able to care for someone romantically. Locsin is quick to add though that she is not hurrying things up as far as her love life is concerned, but instead she will patiently wait until the right man comes along. Meanwhile, the actress has an upcoming movie with actor Aga Muhlach, the storyline which will revolve around the life of two dancers. The movie will also have a political theme and is reportedly titled “Huling Sayaw.”

T

he Queen of All Media is again being linked to a different man. This time, rumors going around of late have linked presidential sister Kris Aquino to Bacoor Mayor Strike Revilla. Aquino admitted that Revilla bought 500 tickets of ‘Dalaw’ so that his constituents can watch her movie entry to the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival. Aquino however clarified that she and Revilla are just friends as she explained that the mayor’s action was just a show of gratitude

after her gift-giving project in Bacoor last Dec. 16. The TV host and actress also revealed that Makati Mayor Junjun Binay also treated 600 of his constituents to her latest horror movie. Meanwhile, Aquino is now an Adopted Daughter of Bacoor by virtue of SB Resolution No. S1532010 which cited her outstanding accomplishments not only in the entertainment business, genuine public service involvement and most especially her support for the ongoing programs of the municipality.

ctress Bea Alonzo finally answered media questions concerning her rumored romance with hunk actor Zanjoe Marudo. Alonzo admitted that she and Marudo, who are often seen in public places, are just trying to enjoy each other’s company as friends. The most recent public sighting of the couple was in a Cineplex in Makati. The actress also said that she just goes with the flow when it comes to love or anything that concerns her life. She added that when unexpected things happen, the best way is to accept it and enjoy all of it. Meanwhile, young actor Gerald Anderson who was romantically linked to the actress recently, refused to comment about the Alonzo-Marudo love issue.

P-Noy’s New Year’s Resolution

T

he Christmas party hosted by President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III at his official residence, Bahay Pangarap (Dream House), was austere compared to ex-president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s nine extravagant Christmas parties during her presidency. However, the by-invitation-only event brought together his kamaganak (relatives) kabarkada (friends), kaklase (classmates), and the rich and the powerful: the old rich, nouveau riche, taipans, patriarchs of political dynasties, political leaders, business moguls, and military top brass. Indeed, these were the who’s who in today’s Philippine society. But missing was the sumptuous 18-course Chinese lauriat that Gloria used to serve, a present from her powerful friends in Beijing. Instead, what P-Noy served was a simple meal of arroz caldo, siopao, hotdogs, leche flan, and kalamansi juice. There were no alcoholic beverages. For entertainment, the Banda Kawayan (bamboo band) played popular Christmas songs. As a finale, P-Noy and the new “apple of his eye,” Len Lopez, sang “Jingle Bells.” The dinner started promptly at 7:00 PM. At 8:30 PM, PNoy, after an introduction by the Speaker of the House, stood up and proposed a toast, “Walang corrupt, walang mahirap! Manigong Bagong Taon!” (No corruption, no poverty! Happy New Year!) The spontaneous response of “P-Noy forever! PNoy forever!” was deafening and the foot-thumping was earthshaking. The floor of the palace’s grand ballroom shook as if a huge locomotive had just passed by. Then Len whispered to him, “Pero mahal, lumang tugtugin na yata iyan, di ba?” (But my love, that’s old tune, wasn’t it?) “That’s okay, as long as it works, di ba?” The exchange of gifts followed the presidential toast. The guests formed a single line to the presidential table. As each guest handed a gift-wrapped present to P-Noy, Len handed the guest a yellow envelope. Inside, it says, “You’re invited to our wedding on October 11, 2011 – Noy and Len.” Then came the highlight of the evening -- a presidential speech. It was an extemporaneous speech, no notes… and in English! “After six months as the president of our beloved country,” P-Noy began saying, “I am faced with a daunting challenge -- either it’s business as usual or do something

that a lot of you wouldn’t think I’d do.” He paused and looked around. “I will fight corruption until the last drop of my blood! I will never, never let the memory of my parents be stained. I’m doing this for them and I know that they’re beside me, right here. I can feel it! Can you feel it too?” “Yes! Yes! Ninoy and Cory are with us here, long live P-Noy!” the guests chorused and gave PNoy a standing ovation for five minutes. P-Noy continued, “I believe that to accomplish this monumental task, I have to bite the bullet, crush your cojones with my bare hands if I had to, and do whatever it takes to make our nation great again.” Sen. Bongbong Marcos stood up and led a standing ovation for three minutes. “I have prioritized a set of goals for the new year,” P-Noy said and he brought out a piece of paper. “This is my New Year’s resolution.” The guests were silent and breathless with anticipation. “First,” P-Noy said, “I’ll make sure that the poorest of the poor will receive monetary assistance for food and education for their children. I asked P21 billion from Congress for this program and I want to thank Congress for allocating that in the budget.” DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman and Party-list Congressman Walden Bello jumped up and led a standing ovation for two minutes. “Second,” P-Noy continued, “I included in my proposed budget a pork barrel allocation of P145 million for each congressman so you can serve your constituents better.” Standing ovation for 10 minutes followed. “Incidentally, I also gave Gloria P2.2 billion in pork barrel so she can…” “Boo! Boo! Corrupt! Magnanakaw!” shouted the guests. “Hold it! I’ll explain later why I gave her that much pork,” P-Noy exclaimed. “Third, I’ll start the construction of the Pan-Philippine Express that would connect -with an unbroken railroad system -- Aparri in the north to the tip of Sarangani in the south. We will build subterranean tunnels across the San Bernardino Strait, San Juanico Strait, and Surigao Strait, a feat that has never been done before. Gloria promised that project in 2006 but it never got off the ground. The railroad system will be completed by the end of my presidency in 2016.” Congressman Manny Pacquiao of Sarangani stood up and led a standing ovation for three minutes.

Forever Swimming in a Sea of Knowledge (Recommended Reference Books for the Eclectic)

D

by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

uring the holiday season, many people have surely gotten what they wanted and wished for—new clothes, new houses, new vehicles, new

laptops, cellular phones, and other gadgets—each realizable depending on one’s economic status and purchasing power. For myself, I already bought in the

months before Christmas some of what I needed such as a oneterabyte hard-disk drive, two pairs of Doc Martens six-hole boots, and a pair of skinny jeans. During the New Year though, I did one last shopping—nothing expensive and nothing fancy—just a few new books from Chapters. 501 Must-Read Books, edited by Emma Beare and Joanna Smith (2006, Bounty Books) This reference book is perfect for eclectic bibliophiles—those who read books from different genres. As the title suggests, this hardbound book gives short descriptions— without giving away the plots— of 501 books from the classics to the contemporary Children’s Fiction, History, Memoirs, Modern Fiction, Science Fiction, Thrillers, and Travel. Books reviewed include The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678, John Bunyan), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865, Lewis Carroll), Pinocchio (1891, Carlo Collodi), The Last Unicorn (1968, Peter S. Beagle), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964, Roald Dahl), Sophie’s World (1994, Jostein Gaarder), Crime and Punishment (1866, Fyodor Dostoyevsky), The Hour of Our Death (1981, Philippe Ariès), The End of History and the Last Man (1992, Francis Fukuyama), Aubrey’s Brief Lives (1949, John Aubrey), Journal of Solitude (1973, May Sarton), The Alexandria Quartet (1957–60, Lawrence Durrell), What We Talk about when We Talk about Love (1981, Raymond Carver), The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940,

Carson McCullers), The SleepingCar Murders (1963, Sebastien Japrisot), Golden Earth: Travels in Burma (1952, Norman Lewis), The Trial (1925, Franz Kafka), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1984, Milan Kundera), and The Curious

Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, and Impressionist movements into the Avant-Garde, Surrealist, and Pop Art movements of the modern era, World Art is indeed an essential reference book on the subject.

Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2003, Mark Haddon). If you are a bibliophilist like me, 501 Must-Read Books is a great reference of great books to collect.

The Last Leaf There are lots of books on sale at Chapters Bookstore and McNally Booksellers. Give yourself a favor—buy a book regularly and broaden your intellectual horizons. I remember one acquaintance of mine who, noticing that I bought books regularly, asked why I was wasting money on such stuff. I just smiled as I sifted through the pages of the newly purchased book I was holding. He then excused himself and went outside, opened his newly bought pack of cigarette, and smoked a stick in sheer delight. I would have asked him a similar question, but I thought, ahh, never mind.

World Art: The Essential Illustrated History, foreword by Mike O’Mahony (JG Press, 2006) This book is not only for the art connoisseur but also for anyone who is familiar with da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and Warhol’s The Shot Marilyns and is interested to know more of such paintings and about various art movements. From the dark images of the Gothic and Medieval times through the
