FIDWAM shares Christmas joy at Siloam Mission

F

IDWAM members gave back to the community by opening their hearts and sharing their time to the homeless during the Christmas season. ApreChristmas party was previously held in order to raise funds to allow them to provide a meal for the homeless people that count on Siloam Mission for a warm meal. FIDWAM members and friends volunteered to serve this warm lunch on Sunday, December 18, 2011. It was an opportunity over the holiday season to help spread

hope and joy to the less fortunate in our community. FIDWAM, Filipino Domestic Workers Association of Manitoba is an organization comprising of Filipino live-in caregivers in Manitoba. The organization aims to protect the rights and responsibilities of it’s members in the province of Manitoba. It provides a support system for it’s members to help improve the quality of their lives through education, conferences, forums, dialogues with government

departments and agencies. FIDWAM advocates for the improvement of every live-in caregiver’s working condition and helps to ensure that it’s members are protected from physical, financial or emotional abuse from any employer. The members network and exchange dialogues with other live-in caregivers’ organization across Canada. Volunteerism is promoted in the organization so as to give it’s members the opportunity to give back to the community.

The New Roman Missal is Here

O

n November 17, 2011, the first Sunday of Advent, the new Roman Missal was used at the Holy Mass in Catholic churches in the English world from the U.K., Australia, the Philippines, North America, and to wherever the English liturgy is used. The new missal is sometimes referred to as “a reform of the reform.” I understand that the Vatican wanted the English translation to be linguistically faithful to the original Latin Mass. First, what was the reform that needed to be changed? Clearly, this is in reference to Vatican Council II which made, among other things, a revision of the liturgy granting permission to celebrate most of the Holy Mass in the vernacular. The idea was to increase lay understanding and participation. Thus we have Mass in Filipino, Bisaya, Ilocano, Vietnamese, Croatian (if you have been to Medjugorje), French, and especially in English which is the most prevalent. Vatican II did not abolish Latin Mass altogether, and traditionalists can still hear it if available anywhere…in the Vatican,

for example. It was the Blessed Pope John XXIII who convened the Vatican Council II on October 11, 1962, with the purpose of bringing the Catholic Church closer to the modern world. Unfortunately, the Blessed Pope John XXIII passed away in June 1963, which would have terminated the Council. But, the new Pope Paul VI immediately reconvened the Council with the advice to renew and restore the Church in his opening address. And so the Council continued its reform to completion of its encyclical on December 8, 1965. Vatican II is a liberalization of the staid and ancient Catholic rites. Traditionalists and ultra-conservatives have never reconciled themselves to the changes. Besides the Holy Mass being celebrated in the vernacular language, present day Catholics can thank Vatican II for having the altar turned around so the priest faces the congregation, for receiving the holy communion standing up and in their hands (instead of kneeling and in their mouths), and for having female

presence in the altar area (female altar servers, lectors, and Eucharistic Ministers). So Vatican II is not being changed but only the English translation of the liturgy. With due respect to our Church and its hierarchy, I’d like to express some reservations. As a cradle Catholic, I would like to voice my uneasiness at rephrasing many of the liturgy and Eucharistic prayers that have become second nature to me. I know virtually all the responses during Holy Mass. I can recite The Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, and other prayers in my sleep. Now I have to be careful and say the right words. For example, when the priest says “Peace be with you,” I should reply “And with your spirit” not “And also with you.” For the Mystery of Faith, I am used to saying, “Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come

January 5 - 20, 2012

again.” But now I have to learn some other responses. Now I say, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof…” instead of “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you…” Also, I used to kneel down and pray as soon as I receive the communion. Now I have to remain standing until all have received theirs. Old habits are hard to break. But if I am having a hard time making the proper responses at Holy Mass, you should see and listen to the Mass celebrant stumble through the Mass. Gratefully, they have the new sacramental book to read with the new Roman Missal. The young clerics seem to enjoy reading the new translation but the older priests with failing eyesight pause a lot and often mumble. I am certain that many of the priests who have memorized the

unchangeable parts of the liturgy through constant use will continue to recite what is long ingrained in their brain. The congregation would not know the difference. After Mass one day, I asked Father Pat Murphy what he thought of the new Missal. With some caution and diplomacy, he said, “There are a few new wordings that we have to learn. But the prayers seem to be more powerful and I like them.” One wording that jumps to my mind is “consubstantial with the Father” in the Nicene Creed which means what? Having the same substance as the Father? Anyway, the Mass now lasts a little longer. I hope and pray that we learn the new Roman Missal and get used to it. For now, let me wish you a “Happy New Year!” and “Peace be with your spirit.”

Can You Go to Jail for Submitting False Documents to Immigration?

I

mmigration law requires all immigration applicants to be truthful. This includes being truthful in what you write down as well as in the documents you submit. Submitting false information with an immigration application can result in both fines and jail time as confirmed by two cases in 2008. In the Hupang case, Mr. Hupang was convicted of an immigration violation because he attached a false school transcript and false acceptance letter to his application to renew his expired study permit. Mr. Hupang purchased these documents for $3,000.00. Before doing this, Mr. Hupang was validly studying at a private college in Vancouver. When that college closed, he lost his tuition and his student status in Canada. In order to try to extend his status, he submitted false documents to immigration. Despite having no criminal record, Mr. Hupang was originally sentenced to two month in jail and a $2,500.00 fine. While the British

Columbia Court of Appeal set aside Mr. Hupang’s two month jail sentence, it did impose a sentence of 17 days in jail which represented the amount of time Mr. Hupang had already served in jail. In addition, the Court of Appeal maintained the $2,500.00 fine he was originally required to pay. While the Court of Appeal indicated that there is no requirement to imprison individuals who provide false documents to immigration, the 17 days of imprisonment was still maintained and Mr. Hupang was given a criminal record. Also in 2008, B.C. Courts considered the case of Lei Zhong. In Mr. Zhong case, Mr. Zhong was convicted of making false statements on his immigration application to renew his study permit. Like Mr. Hupang, Mr. Zhong provided false transcripts and acceptance documents to Citizenship and Immigration Canada. In this case, the judge found that the large fee that Mr. Zhong paid to his immigration

Far from Quiet by Joan Duhaylungsod

What if the 2012 prediction is true? Are we doomed?

W

hile you are reading all the “Happy New Year text messages flooding your inbox, you suddenly hear the news about some predictions that the world will end on December 21, this year. The news sends shivers to your spine. You start to wonder if this year will still be a happy and awesome 2012. All the “what-ifs just bombard you and ruin those happy thoughts. Doomsday, really? Hey, relax. Chill. If it is true, then we still have more than 300 days to do what we want to do before the world gets devastated. That’s enough time to get crazy or to straighten up, to start a family, or file for a divorce, to get pregnant (and hopefully deliver a baby before December), to take classes or to stop going to a course you don’t really like, to travel and see the things you long to see, to let people know how they meant to you, and to do anything else to make the most out of your 2012, or say, before doomsday arrives. Chill. Before you confine yourself to paranoia, let’s sort some info out and see if it is a Mayan prediction or just another doomsayers’ speculation. For the record, nothing was told about the Mayan’s prediction that the world will end on December 2012. Their Long Count calendar though, shows that it’s turning over for another 394-year “baktun or cycle next year. The Mayans created the Long Count calendar, a numerically predictable calendar,

which was set to begin in 3114 BC (according to our Modern Gregorian Calendar), and if calculated to the end of the cycle, it will be in 2012, specifically on December 21, the day of winter solstice for the Northern Hemisphere. So the Mayans did not utter anything about world annihilation in 2012. They have nothing to do with the apocalyptic scenes of the fictional movie “2012. You may still download an Iphone App for Mayan Calendar countdown, but who can say apocalypse shall happen on December 21, 2012? If you still are overwhelmed with anxiety and paranoia for the “doomsday, well, you might as well think that you have just been diagnosed with a terminal disease, and that you shall only have December this year, to live. Personally, I do not really see much difference between knowing when your life shall end, and when the world shall get devastated. Except for the latter which meant no one is going to mourn for your funeral, both situations send across the same message- death is an urgency. We all reach that point of souls separating from our bodies, or us, separating ourselves from the world. The good thing here though is that we all still get the chance to face life with anxiety- anxiety in the sense that we get conscious enough to decide to make every minute memorable and significant to us. I remember my

mom when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Everyday that she woke up alive was precious to her. She never failed to say “I love you to the family. She spent more time to have fun and pampering- things she opted to sacrifice before, just to fulfill her role as a mother and wife. In a short span of time, she was able to do the things she wants without any fear or pessimism. We travelled to places she wanted to visit. She spent time for more coffee dates and shopping with me, ate anything that enticed her taste buds, and attempted to check off items in her short and simple bucket list. She lived her life without fear, as though everyday was her last. She died three months earlier than what was “medically predicted about her case. Bud did she regret? I don’t think so. She made every moment count while she was alive, and that what really mattered most. So, enough about apocalypse and death for 2012. We do not need all these hypes just to push us to live life the way we should live it- that is, with excitement in making the most of every moment while we are alive. Hence, we give 2012 another shot of hope. In 2012, dreams will be fulfilled and life will be more meaningful. If we just think that death has always been an urgency, regardless of all these predictions, and from there, we source out enough energy and drive to really live (not just survive!) each year that comes, there is really no reason to fear for what could happen in 2012. So let’s focus on “the now, and wear the attitude of living as though everyday is our last (did I hear Steve Jobs utter these words in his speech in Stanford?). If the world has to end, we won’t have regrets left, for the right things we do to ourselveshappiness, freedom, sensibility, deep love for self and others- will already be worth a lifetime. Stay hopeful for 2012. We are just starting the first of the 12 chapters of Book 2012. Let’s decide to make a happy story. Cheers everyone!

Also in the Philippines In Philippine pop culture, two superhero characters have long become household names—Darna and Captain Barbell, both created by the Filipino comics writer Mars Ravelo in collaboration with the artists Nestor Redondo and Jim Fernandez, respectively. Darna first appeared in Pilipino Komiks #77 in 1950 and debuted in a film of the same title in the following year, starring Rosa del Rosario. Captain Barbell, on the other hand, first appeared in Pinoy Komiks #5 in 1963 and in film soon after, starring Bob Soler. The Last Leaf Superheroes catapulted to commercial popularity as early as the late ’60s and peaked in the 1980s, when DC Comics and Marvel Comics both reined. They have since remained favorite characters not only in comicdom but also in filmdom.

A Pilgrimage to Italy (Part II)

W

Filipino Journal 11

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

e motored south of Italy to a town called Lanciano, world famous for the 8th century AD Eucharistic Miracle, i.e., a doubting monk celebrating the Holy Mass saw the host changed into living piece of flesh and the wine changed into real blood. The Eucharistic Miracle resides in the Sanctuary of the Eucharistic Miracle near the Piazza Plesbescito, the main square of the town where the cathedral is located. The Flesh and Blood of Christ is still miraculously preserved today in a monstrance that we all can see and venerate. Our pilgrimage continued to San Giovanni Rotondo, also in southern part of the country, where we visited the Friary of Padre Pio, including his tomb, cell, confessional, and the old church where he received the stigmata (he bore and suffered the wounds of Jesus on his hands, feet and sides of his body for 30 years). He was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. On the mountain overlooking the city of Cassino stands the Abbey of Monte Cassino, the first of the Benedictine monasteries founded around 529 AD by St. Benedict, the Italian monk who established

the monastic order known as the Benedictines. Decorated in stucco and mosaics, the basilica enshrines the relics of the saint. The abbey museum displays medieval art and artifacts from the monastery and explains the history of monasticism. Basically, monasticism is the idea and practice of an isolated ascetic life until St. Benedict introduced his “Rule” of practicality, order and emphasis on community shared by all members as governed by discretion and moderation. Our last day of the pilgrimage was spent in Rome, the Eternal City and home and spiritual capital of over one billion Catholics around the world. You’ll find yourselves in two independent states, Italy and The Vatican (Holy See), the administrative headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. Rome has more than 900 churches and basilicas. The enormous St. Peter Basilica that can hold 60,000 people offers the devout pilgrims like us a soulful experience of a lifetime. The greatest of the many churches dedicated to our Lady is the Sta. Maria Maggiore Basilica built in 352 BC after an appearance of the Blessed Virgin. Located in a building in front of St. John

Lateran Church, the seat of the papal throne and the oldest and first in the established order of the papal basilica before St. Peter was built, is the “Holy Stairs” (Scala Santa), which consists of 28 white marble steps reputed to be those walked by Jesus on his way to trial before Pontius Pilate. The Holy Stairs were brought from Jerusalem to Rome around 326 AD by St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. Most pilgrims still mount the steps on their bare knees, praying. We toured the Vatican Museum that houses one of the finest and most extensive collections of art in the world and the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and “The Last Judgment”. A must-see for tourists and pilgrims is the Roman Colosseum, the largest elliptical amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire used for gladiatorial combats and public spectacles. One of the new seven wonders of the world, the Colosseum is considered as the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. While in Rome you might as well see the Roman Forum, used to be the centre of public life and now a sprawling spread of ruins of architectural fragments, columns, stone blocks, and archaeological excavations. However, the most memorable part of our religious trip was our attendance at general audience of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on that sunny day of April 27th.

‘Bourne Legacy’ to shoot in different places in Metro Manila

T

he shooting of “Bourne Legacy,” the fourth part of the Hollywood action thriller spy film “Bourne” series, will take place in different places of Metro Manila. This was revealed by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino who said eight places have been already selected by the film’s production that include Marikina City Market, San Andres Market, Navotas Fishport, Ramon Magsaysay Blvd., Ayala Avenue, Nagtahan, Pasay Taft, Intramuros and Jones Bridge.

The Pasay Taft Rotonda has been selected as one of the locations for some of the movie’s car chase sequences. Tolentino said the latest “Bourne” film will be filming in Manila for a month although he refused to confirm reports that shooting will start on January 14. “The Bourne Legacy” stars Oscar-nominated actor Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker”) as new CIA operative Aaron Cross and will be directed by Tony Gilroy.

Sen. Bong Revilla wants NBI probe on Janelle-Ramgen video controversy

A

video that shows the late Ramgen Revilla and girlfriend Janelle Manahan sharing intimate moments while inside a bathroom made the rounds on Twitter and Facebook social networking sites just before New Year. In a press release, Sen. Bong Revilla Jr. denounced the leakage of the video and has called upon the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct an investigation and arrest the culprits in violation of the Anti-Voyeurism Law of 2009 (RA 9995). Section 4 of RA 9995 prohibits taking photos or recording videos of a person engaged in sexual acts or the like. Revilla, who co-authored the said

law, made it clear that every person who downloads, copies and sends the video is guilty of committing the offense, regardless if they were the original uploaders. Lawyer Argee Guevarra, one of Manahan’s counsel, has already confirmed that his client was indeed the woman in the video. He also accused Ramgen’s family of uploading the video and blackmailing Janelle. Atty. Luke Espiritu, Guevarra’s partner, asserted that the Bautista siblings have the motive because they want to harass Janelle and discourage her from testifying. He said their camp is planning to file a case of

violation of the Anti-Voyeurism Act of 2009 against Ramgen’s siblings and will ask the court to subpoena pertinent records relating to telecom and internet networks to determine the source of the sex video. Meanwhile, Genelyn Magsaysay has rebuffed the allegation that someone from her family uploaded the malicious video. Magsaysay claimed that they no longer have access to Ramgen’s electronic gadgets since his death in October.

K

ris Aquino’s prediction that her Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry, “Segunda Mano” would eventually take the second place position based on box-office earnings has come true. The actress-TV host, who made her bold forecast in an interview prior to the festival opening last Dec. 25, even recalled that she was also able to correctly predict her last year’s entry “Dalaw” landing on the third spot in last year’s festival . Movie pundits however expressed doubts at Aquino’s prediction as she is competing against box-office giants Vic Sotto and Ai Ai delas Alas of “Enteng Ng Ina Mo” and Bong Revilla of “Ang Panday 2.” Past rankings after three days of the festival showed “Segunda Mano” in third position behind these two films. However tallies gathered in the last eight days – from Dec. 25 to Jan.

Reputation

t’s 2012. What now Philippines?

Based on the past two decades (1991–2010), one can fairly argue that the Philippines has seen its unremitting decline in international reputation as can be seen through its generally poor performance in the aspect of economy, social and political stability, curbing corruption, poverty reduction, administration of justice, environmental preservation, agriculture, tourism, science and technology, health, education, sports, entertainment, etc. This ironically happened when most of its Asian counterparts (China, South Korea, India, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.) are further gaining ground for their respective international reputation. During those decades, the Philippines has seen also its rapid population growth, rapid rise of unemployment rates and crime rates, rise of medical exodus, worsening of insurgencies, worsening of political mudslinging, massive corruption, rice importation, environmental catastrophies, commodification of education, etc. It was during this

January 5 - 20, 2012

time also that NAIA Terminal 1 was considered one of the dirtiest airports in the world, Manila one of the most dangerous cities in the world, the Philippines one of the most corrupt countries in Asia and one of the most dangerous places for journalists, and top Philippine universities lagging behind in world rankings. In 2011 the Philippines takes on the same pattern. It’s still, for the most part, a decline in our international reputation as a nation. For while we are proud of the feats of Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Manny Pacquiao, Shamcey Supsup, and Charice Pempengco, and the instant celebrity status of crocodile “Lolong,” it was a year when no Philippine university entered the “Top 400 Universities in the World” as released by Times Higher Education, the Philippines settled at the bottom of the ranking of 180 countries as of corruption index, the devastation wrought by typhoons Sendong and Pedring brought international attention, the execution of drug mules in China, the troubled Overseas Filipino Workers in the Middle East, Japan and New Zealand, the house arrest of a former president,

and the first-ever impeachment trial of a chief justice. For these past years, it is unfortunate that the Philippines seems to earn its international reputation not primarily through what the nation accomplishes through a strong performance in its economy, social and political stability, and scientific and technological innovations but primarily through the individual accomplishments of its citizens especially in sports and entertainment or through an identification that a foreign celebrity is in some ways Filipino (e.g., Maria Aragon, Nonito Donaire, Bruno Mars, etc.). While individual accomplishments in sports and entertainment add to our country’s reputation, they are “lesser” when compared with what a strong economy, social and political stability, and scientific and technological innovations adds to our international reputation—for it gives us “power” and “might,” social and political resiliency, and better opportunities for citizens to excel amidst the world. Hence, if primarily the Philippines strongly performs in its economy, social and political stability, and scientific and technological innovations, and secondarily in sports and entertainment, then our international reputation becomes stronger. Is the above unattainable for the Philippines? No. The Philippines has done it before: the Philippines was the second largest economy in Asia in the 1960s, the ratio of US dollars to Philippine peso was then 2:1, it is in the Philippines where the Asian Development Bank was established (1966), the Philippines hosted the legendary boxing event “Thrilla in Manila” (1975), the Philippine basketball team won Bronze in the

1954 FIBA World Championship, the Philippines was the Asian Basketball Confederation champion in 1960, the Philippines was the Eastern Division champion of the David Cup in the 1960, a Filipino (Carlos Romulo) served as the president of the Fourth Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1950, the Philippines hosted the 1978 FIBA world championships, the Philippines won the first-ever Asian Games basketball gold medal in 1951, among many others. The Philippines can do more than being known as the country of

Manny Pacquiao, the home of the largest crocodile ever caught and the shortest man alive, and the location of one of the “Seven Wonders of the World.” We shall have to hope that the Philippines of 2012 will improve its international reputation through a strong performance in its economy, social and political stability, scientific and social innovations, health, education, sports, and entertainment. This can happen only if its citizens act as “doers” rather than “whiners” and “talkers.”

Year Ender in Music for 2011, part 3: Pop & Hip-hop

Hip and Pop Go the World (On 36 New Pop and Hip-hop Albums Released in 2011)

N

ew Wave and Metal are admittedly my most favorite genres of music, but I don’t let this prevent me from digging and enjoying also other genres of music. I’m an eclectic or should I say consummate music enthusiast. I can bang my head and swear with a two- finger-horn Metal sign with Iron Maiden, Rage against the Machine, or Avenge Sevenfold; yet I can also croon and tap my feet to Michael Jackson, Usher, or Justine Bieber. Many hardcore Rock enthusiasts ridicule Pop and Hip-hop music. They dismiss these genres as epitomes of uncool. What these so-called music fans don’t realize is that, by doing so, they let themselves fall in the folly of musical discrimination. Isn’t there a tinge of hypocrisy in people who often shout “No to discrimination!” as a social battlecry yet discriminate arts and music without giving credit to the talent, creativity, skills, and hard work of songwriters and artists?

In respect to Pop and Hip-hop— two music genres that many selfrighteous Rock fanatics frequently malign—here’s a list of Pop and Hi-hop albums released in 2011. I find all these releases worthy of my listening pleasure. Just by having an open mind and open ears, maybe you can appreciate these too. Adele – 21 Alison Krauss & Union Station – Paper Airplane Aqua – Megalomania Beastie Boys – Hot Sauce Committee Part Two Beyoncé – 4 Britney Spears – Femme Fatale Charice – Infinity (Filipino) Chris Brown – F.A.M.E. David Cook – This Loud Morning Down with Webster – Time to Win vol. 2 Drake – Take Care Gym Class Heroes – The Papercut Chronicles II Il Divo – Wicked Game

Jay-Z and Kanye West – Watch the Throne Jenn Grant – Honeymoon Punch Jennifer Hudson – I Remember Me Jennifer Lopez – Love? Justin Bieber – Under the Mistletoe Kelly Clarkson – Stronger Lady Antebellum – Own the Night Li’l Wayne – The Carter IV LMFAO – Sorry for Party Rocking Maria Aragon – Maria Aragon (Filipino) Mary J. Blige – My Life II... The Journey Continues (Act 1) Nicole Scherzinger – Killer Love Pitbull – Planet Pit Ricky Martin – Música + Alma + Sexo [Music + Soul + Sex] Rihanna – Talk That Talk Roxette – Charm School Snoop Dogg – Doggumentary Susan Boyle – Someone to Watch over Me Talib Kweli – Gutter Rainbows Tiffany – Rose Tattoo Vanessa Carlton – Rabbits on the Run Vanilla Ice – Wisdom, Tenacity, and Focus Wiz Khalifa – Rolling Papers Final Note Music is music regardless what kind it is. Have in mind also that Pop music is a very broad genre, which comes in various flavors such as Country, Dance, Rock, and Hip-hop. The typical characteristics of Pop music are its simple versechorus-verse-chorus structure, easyto-sing-along-with choruses, and minimal instrumentations. These are the reasons Pop songs appeal to the so-called masses who are generally casual listeners, regarding music usually for its entertainment and easy-listening value and not for its technicality or complexity.

Horoscope A shade of hope will come over the dry tendencies of this period. It’s difficult to say whether a dream will come true or you’ll dream of something. The romantic influences will be very strong in the first part of January 2012. You’ll feel as if you’re flying, especially in the second week of the month.

You will see a focus on career and of course higher gains and income due to that. Socially a good period as friendship would be revived and new friendships possible. If you try, you could make friends in high places also this month.

The month would begin positively and financial gains and progress would be good. Around mid month you might see a general dip in energy, finances and a sense of detachment and lethargy. The second half would be a slow period and so you should avoid keeping too many professional, financial and social commitments during this time.

You respond to the needs of loved ones more readily at this time. You are most receptive to emotional healing from within by selflessly offering aid, love, and compassion to those who are suffering or in need. Your empathy and sensitivity toward others softens the pain they are experiencing in dealing with personal issues.

Use common sense and good judgment in your personal and professional affairs during this time. There may be a tendency to overextend your energies toward far-reaching goals which causes you to avoid responsibilities in your current work or social involvements.

Intimate relationships can undergo a rebirth or renewal at this time. You can experience opportunities to enrich and enhance your marriage or love relationship as deep emotional feelings and intense commitment to your partner surface.

You may feel slightly confused over a problem in a personal or professional relationship. You are more determined to resolve any ongoing dilemma in order to restore a sense of loyalty, trust and security in your work or social environment.

You tend to have a one-track mind now, and you talk to others about your interests whether they are interested or not! A negative tendency that you should try to curb is trying to talk others into your point of view.

Work ambitions may be put aside while you turn inward to focus on personal issues at this time. This is a favorable time to prove your devotion and commitment to your loved ones and also to put your own emotional needs into perspective.

Dreams, wishes, and fantasies about love are strong now, and you may be infatuated with someone you meet at this time, only to be disappointed later when you discover this person does not fulfill all of your expectations.

Your romantic and social responses are heightened now. During this period you tend to put more creativity and imagination into your life and important relationships. A healthy attitude toward your love life and social involvements can bring out the best in yourself, your talents, and strengths and a new clarity regarding your relationships.

You may find your interests turning to matters of work and professional endeavors. You may feel an increased sense of responsibility and are more inclined to follow through on job commitments and obligations. This is a good time to take advantage of opportunities which offer greater success and prosperity in your vocation.

PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

Year of P-Noy’s ‘Dragon’ In the Chinese Zodiac calendar, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon, a very special year. It is said that more than 4,000 years ago, tribes in China had animal emblems. The two large tribes unified and chose the dragon as their symbol. Their descendants became the Han Chinese today. In Chinese astrology, the dragon – which is made up of different part of animals: tiger, fish, snake, and eagle – was a revered symbol of power, superiority, and rule. It still is today. And those born in the Year of the Dragon are deemed powerful and wise. And for the leader of a country, the Year of the Dragon is an opportune time for strong leadership and bold decision-making. Would President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III – a Chinese mestizo – fit in this mold? Let’s see. P-Noy was born on February 8, 1960 in the Year of the Rat. Chinese astrologists say that those born under the sign of the Rat are: Quick-witted, clever, charming, sharp and funny. They have excellent taste, are a good friend and are generous and loyal to others considered part of its pack. Motivated by money, can be greedy, is ever curious, seeks knowledge and welcomes challenges. They are compatible with Dragon or Monkey. Persons born under the powerful sign of the Dragon are: Energetic

and warm-hearted, charismatic, lucky at love and egotistic. They’re natural born leaders, good at giving orders and doing what’s necessary to remain on top. They are compatible with Monkey and Rat. Would P-Noy be able to utilize the power generated by the confluence of the Rat and the Dragon? Year of the purge At the beginning of 2011, PNoy’s detractors and critics called him a wimp and an indecisive leader. By the end of the year, these same people were calling him a dictator! One likened him to Fidel Castro. Another one said he was like Hitler. What went wrong? Or, should I ask, what went right? Indeed, what a difference a year – or to be more precise, seven months -- made in Philippine politics. So, what did PNoy do to drive his detractors and critics in frenzy? First, on February 8, former Armed Forces Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes took his own life amidst the scandals that shook the military establishment. On April 29, former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez resigned after she was impeached for betrayal of public trust by the

House of Representatives and before a Senate impeachment trial commenced. On July 14, retired Lt. Gen. Jacinto Ligot and his wife Erlinda were charged with tax evasion. On September 16, retired Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia was arrested and detained in the New Bilibid Prison to serve a sentence handed down in 2005 by a military court martial for violation of Articles of War 96 and 97, to wit: “Conduct unbecoming of an officer and gentleman for failing to disclose/declare all his existing assets in 2002 and 2003 and for holding the status of an immigrant or permanent resident of the United States thereby causing dishonor to the military profession” and “Conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline for making untruthful statements under oath about his true assets in his 2002 and 2003.” Interestingly, his sentence was never carried out by the Arroyo administration. On October 4, Congressman Mikey Arroyo and his wife were slapped with a tax evasion case. On November 18, former President and Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Benjamin Abalos were charged with election sabotage, a non-bailable offense. Gloria is currently under hospital arrest while Abalos is in detention at the Southern Police Department. On December 12, the House of Representatives impeached Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona for betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, and graft and corruption. A Senate

impeachment trial is scheduled to commence on January 16, 2012. On December 29, the Office of the Ombudsman filed graft charges against Gloria and her husband Mike Arroyo, Benjamin Abalos, and Leonardo Mendoza with the antigraft court, Sandiganbayan. It doesn’t stop there. Ombudsman Conchita CarpioMorales is still busy investigating several plunder charges against the Arroyos and others. P-Noy’s daunting challenges No President before P-Noy has ever faced a multitude of daunting challenges. And the forces that are arrayed against him are superior in political power and financial means. The Arroyo-Corona axis could overwhelm him if they could see a weak point in P-Noy’s offensive. And the Senate impeachment trial is insofar the weakest point. PNoy doesn’t have any control over it. To convict Corona, the House prosecution panel needs to convince 16 senator-judges while Corona needs to convince only eight to acquit him. But the immediate threat is Corona’s motion before the Senate impeachment court to dismiss the impeachment complaint. He claimed that it was invalid since the House members did not read the complaint before signing. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, who is presiding over the impeachment trial, said, “The trial might be prevented if the impeachment court found defective the eight Articles of Impeachment filed against Corona by the House of Representatives.” As presiding officer, Enrile has the sole authority

January 5 - 20, 2012 to approve or disapprove Corona’s motion before the trial begins. As to whether he would exercise that authority solely or collectively remains to be seen. However, if Corona’s motion is approved, it could trigger political rumbles of tectonic proportion. The second threat is the petition of four lawyers before the Supreme Court to issue a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) to stop the impeachment trial. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the petitions on January 17, 2012, a day after the impeachment trial begins. If the High Court decides to issue a TRO, then it would be a severe blow to P-Noy. Contingency plan Anticipating the worst to happen, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Palace has a “Plan B” to remove Corona in case he is acquitted in his impeachment trial in the Senate. “We always have a contingency plan. But it would be better to leave it up to President Benigno Aquino III to disclose the details of the plan,” she said. Needless to say, it sent shivers down the spine of those in the Arroyo-Corona camp. Is the field set for a battle nobody wants to happen? Or is it inevitable? But P-Noy has already crossed his Rubicon and the die is cast – alea iacta est. There is no turning back! It’s P-Noy versus Corona. If Corona wins, Gloria walks. And if P-Noy wins, the dragon – the people, his “boss” – wins. Indeed, 2012 could very well be the year of P-Noy’s dragon.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Everyone—Theists, Atheists, and Whateverists! (On the Universality of Christmas as an Annual Sociocultural Festival)

M

any people think that the Christmas season is reserved only for Christians or those whose religions are offshoots of Christianity and believe in the existence of the God—such as Roman Catholics, Born-Again Christians, Mormons, members of Iglesia ni Cristo, El Shaddai, Aglipay, and many more. The reason behind this is the insistence of many Christians that the main theme in celebrating Christmas is the commemoration of the supposed birth of the God whom they believe created them and the entire world. This may be one of the origins of the occasion, but it should not be considered exclusive and the only reason to celebrate Christmas. Because of this claim, many non-Christians and non-believers shy away from Christmas or feel awkward when deciding to celebrate it after all. They feel left out. They feel that this is not for them; that they are

excluded; for how could they celebrate the birth of someone whom they do not believe to exist? Thus, it’s about time to change our perspective in celebrating Christmas. We should start being inclusive rather than being exclusive. After all, the basic goal of the event is to celebrate sharing, understanding, and embracing everyone regardless of race, belief, and religion or the lack of this. If we view Christmas as a strictly religious event, then it defies the concept of respect and tolerance which is what the season is basically about. By treating Christmas as a sociocultural event, we become non-exclusive and more respectful of others who have different sets of beliefs. The Better Meaning of Christmas In the passage of time, Christmas should no longer be regarded as simply the birth of

the God many people believe in. It should be more than that. Of course, Christians may continue celebrating it to commemorate the birth of their God. But they should not expect others to share this sentiment. They should not insist their beliefs on others, alienating the latter in the process. Christmas would be better celebrated as an annual sociocultural event whose main purpose is giving, sharing, and fostering goodwill and camaraderie among families, relatives, friends, neighbors, and even strangers on a backdrop of festivities involving food, drinks, gifts, music, fireworks, get-together meals, and shopping for new clothes and other stuff. This non-religious approach of celebrating Christmas is more universal, practical, humanistic, non-exclusive, and non-discriminatory.

Or, in Simple Words The Christmas season is best celebrated as a sociocultural event whose main purpose is giving, sharing, and fostering goodwill and camaraderie among humankind— an approach which promotes universality and individualism and eliminates religious and racial discrimination.

Now that Christmas has come and gone, we noticed several of our readers and friends on Facebook repping their new Winnipeg Jets gear!

We’re looking for Jets fan photos wearing any Winnipeg Jets gear - jerseys, hats, scarves, gloves or even a Winnipeg Jets license plate. earlier in the season and was placed on injury reserve after a second incident with concussionlike symptoms. The Winnipeg Jets cap off a franchise record month with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs in a New Year’s Eve classic. Winnipeg Jets goals came from Zach Bogosian, Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler. Ondrej Pavelec stood on his head stopping 21 Leaf shots and allowed goals by Clarke MacArther adn Phil Kessel. Leafs goaltender, James Reimer, a Manitoba native lost in his home province NHL debut. In their first road game of 2012, the Winnipeg Jets lost badly in a 7-3 loss against the struggling Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre. The Jets need to improve thier road record to ensure that they don’t drop out of the tight playoff race in the Eastern Conference. There are only four Jets home games in January. Upcoming games at MTS Centre this month include the San Jose Sharks (Jan.12), New Jersey Devils (Jan. 14), Buffalo Sabres (Jan. 19) and the Florida Panthers (Jan. 21).

ome ice definitely has its advantages. The fans that fill up the MTS Centre during each Jets home game is getting a reputation across the NHL as the loudest fans to play in front of and visiting teams and media are taking notice. Also on the top of the loudest fan list are the those at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Regarded as the 7th man on the ice, screaming, shouting, and booing fans have helped the Jets win several close games in December. The Winnipeg Jets end off December with a 10-3-1 and tied for 6th spot in the Eastern Conference with New Jersey and Ottawa. The 10 wins in December mark a franchise record for most points and wins in a month. One of the losses came against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins and unfortunately to the disappointment of many fans, the Penguins were without superstar, Sidney Crosby. Crosby returned Happy New Year & Go Jets Go!

Winter is here! Lace up the skates!

W

e were spoiled in December with some gorgeous and above seasonal weather last December. In fact, it was the 9th warmest December in Winnipeg and that didn’t stop many people from lacing up the ice skates and heading to the Forks and the newly open duck pond at Assiniboine Park. On a sunny afternoon and evening over the holiday break, I ran into several Filipinos that have taken up ice skating as a new hobby. Rommel Figurasin and his family arrived to Winnipeg a few short months ago and this was their

first family skate under the canopy at the Forks Market. On the ice trail from the Forks Market to the Scotiabank Stage, I ran into Aira and her younger brother, Allan bother learning to skate for the second time. Also on their second time on skates, Joyce Umandap and Justin Mendoza. The duck pond at Assiniboine Park also opened up over the holidays with expanded facilities at the new Qualico Family Centre and the park cafe. The Park Cafe is open daily from 8:00am to 4:00pm and serves breakfast and lunch.
