Dreams do come true... in God’s time!
Joycee & Ryan
Ryan and I first met back in 1998 at the hallways of Red River College where I was studying to be an Electronic Engineering Technologist and Ryan was studying to be a mechanic. We only dated for a very short period of time and eventually went our own separate ways. I never saw him again until….
F
ast forward seven years later to August 2005, my truck broke down so a friend referred me to a mechanic she knew, Ray. As my truck was getting repaired, Ray was talking to me and said that my morals and values in life were the same as his co-worker and that I should meet him. I told Ray that I was not ready to get involved with anyone as I just got out of a relationship. Ray insisted
I meet his co-worker and when he said Ryan’s full name, I realized that it was the same guy I dated at Red River College. Something told me that this was part of God’s plan and to take a chance. So I did and on September 21, 2007, Ryan proposed. Our wedding was on September 20, 2008. This date is very special for 3 reasons. The first reason is obvious, this is the day that I married the love of my life, my best friend, my soul mate. The second reason is it’s my daddy’s birthday and the third and final reason is it’s my grandparents wedding anniversary. The ceremony took place at St. Patrick’s church and the reception was held at Victoria Inn . We had roughly 540 guests. It was truly a memorable night. Dreams do come true in God’s time!!

2012 Ford Focus Redesigned for Fun
I
n 2012, I expect to drive more vehicles from a wider range of manufacturers and across different classes of vehicles. The local Ford PR contact has been pretty willing to throw me the keys to almost all Ford vehicles that roll through Manitoba. It’s been fun driving around in a new vehicle with all the newest gadgets and driver conveniences. In December, I drove the 2012 Ford Focus for a week during our mild start to winter. I was definitely impressed with the overall new re-design of the Ford Focus. Having read
up on the Ford Focus prior to driving the car, photos of previous years models were rather underwhelming. The 2012 Focus is sporty looking especially the 16” painted aluminum wheels. I definitely have to give two thumbs up to Ford and any manufacturer for that matter that step up the look of factory rims. The 2012 Ford Focus comes in several trim levels and configurations: S, SE, SEL and Titanium; Sedan or Hatchback models. Starting price for a Ford Focus is $15,499 and tops out at $23,999 for the Ford Focus
Titanium edition. One of the pros of the Ford Focus is it’s fuel economy - 7.8l/100km on the highway and 5.5l/100kms in the city. The Focus engine is 2.0 liter 4-cylinder, 160 hp at 6,500rpm, 146 lb.-ft. torque at 4,450rpm. Available transmission is a five-speed manual and 6-speed PowerShift Automatic. Also included is the Microsoft SYNC controls that easily allowed me to add my Blackberry, iPad and handsfree calling control. Standard safety equipment with the Ford Focus include AdvanceTrac with ESC (electronic stability control), dual-stage firstrow airbags, side-impact and side-curtain airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes and an anti-theft engine immobilizer. The Ford Focus is in a pretty tight bunch of vehicles. Amongst this group of vehicles are the Chevy Cruz, Honda Civic, Kia Forte, Mazda 3, Hyandai Elantra, Volkswagen Jetta and the Toyota Corolla.
SMC signs MOA with housing groups to builds homes for ‘Sendong’ victims in Mindanao
W
ith Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman witnessing the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) was recently signed between San Miguel Corporation (SMC), housing groups Gawad Kalinga and Habitat for Humanity to build the houses, and local government units to help identify relocation sites for thousands of families stricken by typhoon “Sendong” who remain homeless in parts of Visayas and Mindanao. SMC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. expressed confidence that his company’s commitment to build 5,000 homes initially in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Dumaguete, will give the affected families renewed hope. SMC President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang added that this is not just providing houses, but more importantly,
giving them homes, as SMC is also committing half a billion pesos to provide the victims the means to start all over again though livelihood opportunities. SMC has already donated an estimated P12 million worth of products and cash for the victims of typhoon Sendong through its San Miguel Foundation and Petron Foundation.

Far from Quiet by Joan Duhaylungsod
It’s more fun in the Philippines. Amen.
T
he Department of Tourism (DoT) has recently launched its new campaign to promote tourism in the Philippines- and thus far, this has been an epic success. The DoT released in the first week of the year, the three versions of starstudded “Tara na, Biyahe Tayo” music videos, which feature the picturesque archipelago. Truly, the videos which pride for the wonderful spots in the Philippines, are inviting. I, myself, who have gone to most of the places mentioned, could not help but reminisce my PH getaways, and look forward to visiting our country again soon. Apart from the music videos, the DoT also unveiled the slogan to replace “Wow Philippines”- that is, “It’s more fun in the Philippines”, which has become a meme in social networking sites and in Filipino colloquy as well. I admit that at first, I liked the “Wow Philippines” better because of its originality. When the DoT, early last year, gave media a teaser on this “It’s more fun in the Philippines” campaign, it was bombarded with criticisms for its lack of authenticity as it allegedly copied Switzerland’s tourism promotion in the 1950s. However, after the new slogan was officially launched this January, and for the record, effectively marketed itself, not only to foreigners and investors, but most importantly to the Filipinos, I then reconsidered and embraced this new tourism slogan. It’s more fun in the Philippines, and I say amen to that. The slogan is absolutely epic. Panalo. Wagi. For one, this tourism maxim describes best what to expect in a Filipino culture- joviality, warmth,
and adventure. We are a culture that always intends to escape from monotony. We hate just black and white. We seek to be happy at any given moment, and we never fail to find humor, out from scholarly discussions to the most nonsensical talks. Just imagine how Senator Miriam Defensor- Santiago, throws punchlines in her privilege speeches in the Senate, or how the tambays in the streets guffaw at one another’s out-of-this-world arguments or nonsensical stories. Filipinos can laugh about imperfections, problems and mistakes- an attitude that some cultures do struggle with. I guess our attitude as Filipinos have lessened the market and popularity of anxiolytics and benzodiazipines in the country. When we have problems, we don’t go to the doctor, and ask to be drugged with sleeping pills. We rather go to our families and friends, and find comfort just by chitchatting with them, over cups of coffee, or bottles of Red Horse beer. :) The slogan has not only marketed tourism in the Philippines but also given Filipinos from all walks of life to express their creativity. Each Filipino has his own way of telling why it is more fun in the Philippines. As the meme continues to spread, so do the posters, punchlines and puns. From the most wonderful captures of the country’s tourist spots, to distinguishing the-only-in-thePhilippines-way-of-life, to spoofing the slogan itself that cracks hilarity at its best- all these work of art shows Filipinos’ ingenuity , artistry and wit. Here are some of the eye-catching and hilarious posters of “It’s more fun in the Philippines”.
Visit our Web site - www.FilipinoJournal.com - all photos & articles available online!
Lastly, I call this slogan epic because it has finally awaken the Filipinos’ love for our culture. Everytime a poster is being added to the “it’s more fun in the Philippines “ collection, it says something about another Filipino realizing another positive value in his country, and thus, showing it off. When they post about a natural wonder in the Philippines, it affirms their appreciation of our country’s beauty. When they post about personalities, like the dancing traffic enforcers clad in clown costumes, or the dancing flight attendants on demo aboard, it affirms their recognition of Filipinos’ ways in adding entertainment to routine work. When they post about something unconventional, like overloaded jeepneys and motorcycles, they recognize that no matter how uncomfy and unsafe some of our public transpos could be, there is still fun to be aboard in these unique rides. (Trust me, I tried them already). In the end, the recent campaign gives each Filipino the chance to think back and realize that there is beauty in the Philippines despite all the oddness, adversities and poverty our country is facing. Yes, we are a third world country, but our economic status does not necessarily equate our happiness level. We are a fun-loving people, and that attitude, sometimes, could help us get by each day. It is heartwarming to know that this DoT’s endeavor has turned out to be the Filipino people’s campaign as well. Promoting tourism, in this way, has become a shared vision both by the government, and every Juan dela cruz. On top of all these, the slogan “It’s more fun in the Philippines”, has brought back the Filipino sense of pride and ownership of the country, something that I have not seen for the longest time. It’s more fun in the Philippinesthis slogan does not solely talk about the country’s natural resources, but also on every fun-loving Filipino who is behind the genuineness of the meme. As I always say, nothing beats Pinoy fun. Tara na, Biyahe tayo.

Message from Coach dela Cruz
F
irst off...I would like to thank all the players and parents of FBA Winnipeg for your trust and commitment throughout the summer as my teams prepared for Houston 2011. It has been my pleasure in coaching the Tykes, PeeWee and Bantam team over the past 6 months. All your hard work and dedication is appreciated. For all those that were able to make the trip, take a moment to reflect on the entire FBA experience...the sound of victory and the agony of defeat...cherish every moment because not every kid, not every parent will ever experience what we experienced in Houston over the Labour Day Weekend. It was an incredible journey and I hope that all of you enjoyed it as much as my family, friends and I did. Regardless of whether we won or loss, the memory of representing the city of Winnipeg and playing against the very best will always be a part of you. I have been involved with FBA for many years now and in my opinion... Houston 2011 was THE BEST host ever! Everything about Houston was awesome! Everything they did...they did right..go big or go home! Everything definitely is Bigger in Texas!!...like the 50pcs chicken McNuggets for $10.25 @ McDonald’s or the 3Litre pop for $2.29...yikes...only in Texas...hahaha The Westin Oak hotel was owned by team Winnipeg for the entire week! Our outdoor roof top pool became our common meeting area and we used the weight room as our “after hours” spot.. Shopping was crazy as we had a huge mall attached to our hotel and the outlet malls were so close and easy to get to. The nightlife was quite an experience for those of age...and quite memorable...or forgettable for those that “engaged” in extracurricular activities...:p The opening ceremonies venue was humongous, excellent and the seats were
super comfortable. The best part was the “players oath” by the Masters division... Dance!....”Sayow!!”...too funny! The gym venues were top notch and being only 2mins away from each other..we were able to watch the majority of games and it was nice to see our city support one another! The closing ceremonies topped off our weekend as the venue was spectacular and there was NO waiting line to get food. Houston brought in a Filipino comedian from California named Joey Guila...hilarious!!! (Filipino GPS...”Turn.. already”) and the (“bakla dance”)...ahahaha too funny! FBA team Winnipeg would not be possible without the players, parents, families, coaches, committee, sponsors and the great City of Winnipeg! On several occasions throughout the weekend, I was approached by parents from the other North American cities. These parents told me how envious they were that our city was so tightly knit and how our players were very skilled and our sportsmanship was unlike anything they have ever seen. When our opponents fell to the floor, we helped them up, when there was a hard foul, we made sure the opponent was ok before we left the area...whether we won or loss...we were gracious in defeat and humble in victory. Some of these parents compared our teams to the rest of the other teams and the consensus was that team Winnipeg was a lot “friendlier” than the others. That is great to hear considering our teams are just as competitive and tenacious as every other team out there... the difference is how we carry ourselves and how we represent our city. Good job to all of you team Winnipeg! Best Regards, Coach Arsenio continued on page 16

News broke out however shortly thereafter that Garcia has already broken up with the girlfriend. When asked by Manzano, Garcia said he will allow their son Alex Jazz to join showbiz if he wants to. Garcia himself started his showbiz career as child star in the ‘90s Kapamilya gag-variety show, “Ang TV”

tarting this issue I will write every now and then short reviews of a number of randomly selected books from my collection of more than a thousand books from various genres—from Fantasy Fiction, Classic Literature, True Crime, Poetry, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Biography, Romance, to Music and many more. I am yet to read many of those books, but I can fairly claim that I have read hundreds of them already. In fact, I have re-read for a number of times many of these. 1. The Great Indie Discography by M.C. Strong (Canongate Books, 2003). I bought this “bible” in 2004, for C$47.95; a bit expensive but it was worth my money. This book provides the histories and discographies of many artists and bands classified under Alternative Rock / Indie Rock—from The Stooges, Captain Beefheart, and Velvet Underground to The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, to The Lemonheads, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, and Blur. Also, this book continues to be a fruitful springboard for knowing what essential MP3s to download or what CDs to purchase especially if you’re a big enthusiast of
Alternative Rock music. 2. The Great Rock Discography by M.C. Strong (North Atlantic Books, 2002).Originally priced at C$44.95, this book I got for only C$9.99! Great deal, wasn’t it? This discography book covers a far wider range of Rock artists, and it’s a great complementary book to the one above. 3. Pocket Kama Sutra by Anna Hooper (Dorling Kindersley, 2004). This small book is a new guide to the ancient arts of lovemaking; not definitive but enough to satisfy the imagination and to put into action the creativity of any adventurous couples. “The warm glow that follows lovemaking is all too easily dissipated if you simply go to sleep, or do anything that is either physically or intellectually demanding. Most lovers want to sustain the feeling of harmony; some like simply to lie quietly in each other’s arms.”

oldest existing, and most highly revered, collection of Japanese poetry, compiled sometime in the Nara period, which covered the years from about AD 710 to 794. One aspect of Japanese poetry that I love is its fondness for short forms—haiku, tanka, 5. The Portable Jung, edited by and shi. Joseph Campbell (Penguin USA, 1976). Fresh from reading Jung “Slight not these flowers! by Anthony Storr and Freud Each single petal contains and Jung: Years of Friendship, A hundred words of mine.” Years of Loss by Linda L. Donn, I decided finally to buy this definitive book, which contains Carl Gustav Jung’s biography and a lavish introduction to his key writings on analytical psychology and the adaptation and interpretation of mythology and anthropology. This book is a must-have for any enthusiast of the philosophical works of Jung. 6. 1,000 Poems from the Manyōshū (The Complete Nippon Gakujutsu Shinkokai Translation) (Dover Publications, 2005). This is the best companion to my Poems of the Masters: China’s Classic Anthology of T’ang and Sung Dynasty Verse. Manyōshū is the
4. 4,000 Things You Should Know by John Farndon (Miles Kelly Publishing, 2003) – I’ve always been a big enthusiast of trivia and general knowledge. Do you still remember the names of the three ossicle bones of the ear? What about the two moons of Mars? Who was the second person to set spaceboots

The Last Leaf A true literary connoisseur is someone who sheds a tear when reading a Romance pocketbook, gets lost in the worlds of a Fantasy Fiction novel but can find her way out unscathed but nevertheless braver and wiser, can follow the trail of a crime scene in a True Crime book, enjoys reciting lines from a Poetry book, and digs the roots of any music genre.

Horoscope A shade of hope will come over the dry tendencies of this period. It’s difficult to say whether a dream will come true or you’ll dream of something. You might experience special feelings. You might delude yourself as well. So what! It’ll be beautiful and it’d be a shame not to have this experience.
You’ll have higher emotional availability, you’ll pay more attention to your partner, and if you don’t have one, you’ll painfully experience loneliness and mobilize better to find the right person for you.
Intuition and practicality will work well together in building success, and when it comes to promoting your own image or talents, nobody is more imaginative and efficient than you.
The risk of some new ailments developed in January 2012 will be quite low. However, you’ll still focus on taking care of the already existing ones.
You’ll now have the opportunity to promote your image in a unique way and skillfully prove your qualities. Take advantage of it! You’d better not miss any opportunity to stand out and to make the others aware of your value. Your charm and connections might help you.
You’ll have the opportunity to show yourself in a favorable light, to prove your talent and professional skill. It’s possible for you to be assigned a special task, to find yourself in the situation to coordinate a project or try your commanding or organizing skills in a different way.
Fate will favor you, but it also depends on you for favors to take shape. Do your best to support it! If you don’t leave the house or the office, happiness will have a hard time finding you.
You’ll be all right financially speaking and you’ll be lucky especially in the third week of January 2012. Finances will motivate you, and your actions could be connected to banks, investments or business environments.
You won’t be exactly in the ideal shape, so you’d better take care of yourself and use your strength carefully. You won’t be very well psychologically either. Fears, anxiety, pessimism, frustrations and phobias will play with your morale, if you allow them to.
Other advantages of January 2012 will be creativity, the force of expression and the instinct of opportunity, which will place you in the right place at the right time.
Nothing will prevent you from being happy in January 2012. All you have to do is change your vision on love or innovate your current relationship. Do it without hurrying, by a previously established strategy. Think about what your sentimental life would need, consider your chances to adjust the wishes to the possibilities and take action!
Collaborative work and joint effort seem to be the most visible forms of the professional activity in January 2012. You’ll need to interact with the others, either as partners, or as students, supporters or protectors.

Phl, US to strengthen military cooperation
P
resident Aquino met with Senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman, Sheldon Whitehouse and Kelly Ayotte at Malacaùang on Tuesday as the Philippines and the United States agreed to strengthen military cooperation. McCain, Lieberman and Ayotte who are all members of the US Senate armed services committee, said they are increasing their presence in the Asia-Pacific region and have already have established bases in Australia and Singapore. Quoting Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin who was with the President in the meeting with the US senators, Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing that there will be increased military exercises in Asia-Pacific region and that would also include the Philippines, Lacierda clarified, however, that the US was not establishing any bases in the Philippines. He said the Philippines also asked for a second Hamiltonclass cutter, a request that the US senators vowed to support. The first Hamilton-class cutter arrived in the Philippines last August. It is now commissioned by the Philippine Navy to protect the country’s waters. Lacierda said the Philippines welcomed the wider military cooperation between the two countries, and the Philippines is ready to engage itself in more military exercises with the US. Some of the Filipino officials who attended the meeting included Gazmin, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima. Department of National Defense (DND) Undersecretary for Finance, Munitions, Installations and Materiel Fernando Manalo, Assistant Secretary forAcquisition, Installations and Logistics Patrick Velez and Assistant Secretary for Strategic Assessment Raymund Quilop were also present.

Winnipeg Jets Report By Ron Cantiveros Photos by Rob Buenaventura
Road woes continue for the Jets
I
n order to be a contender for the NHL playoffs, the Winnipeg Jets need to win on the road. The early 4-game road trip in January resulted in a dismal 1-3 road record with losses to Montreal, Toronto and Boston. They were able to squeak in an overtime win against the Buffalo Sabres. Not good enough for coach Claude Noel. The Jets continued to be streak breakers with a 2-0 shutout against the red hot Ottawa Senators. It was Chris Mason’s 2nd shutout of the season and unfortunately, he wasn’t able to break the 0-7 record for Jet’s back-to-back games record as they lost 5-1 to the New Jersey Devils. Even with all the injuries throughout the first half of January, coach Claude Noel isn’t using the absence of Dustin Byfuglien, Blake Wheeler and Zach Begosian from several games in as an excuse for the Jets. Byfuglien and Begosian still remain on the injured reserve list while Wheeler made his return after suffering a throat to the puck earlier against the San Jose Sharks. So far, the Jets are 3-6-0 in January with two wins against
the Buffalo Sabres and the road win against the Ottawa Senators. The six losses come from Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadians, Boston Bruins, San Jose Sharks and two tough losses against the New Jersey Devils, including one at MTS Centre.
Winnipeg Jets centre, Bryan Little shooting against San Jose Sharks Anti Niemi. Winnipeg Jets lost the game 2-0 at home at the MTS Centre.
All-Star Bright Spot Injured Winnipeg Jet’s defenseman, Dustin Byfuglien was named as the lone Winnipeg Jet to the 2012 NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa on Sunday, January 29th. This would be Byfuglien’s second straight allstar appearance. However, with his current lower body injury and no indication from the Jets on a return date, appearing in the AllStar Game could be in jeopardy. Evander Kane and Tobias Enstrom are players that maybe considered to take Byfuglien’s spot on the All-Star roster. Upcoming Games The four remaining games in January include the Florida Panthers on Saturday and three aways games against Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers.

There’s a fourth billboard in Portage La Prairie, which I plan on driving out to see for myself. Mayweather looks forward to Pacquiao as his May 5 opponent
I
n reference to a statement last week by Team Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. declared Wednesday in his Twitter account that he has already secured a guarantee for his purse and is now ready to fight Manny Pacquiao on May 5. Mayweather added that all Top Rank chief Bob Arum has to do to make the fight happen is get in touch with Golden Boy Promotions Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer. But Pacquiao’s top adviser Mike Koncz said that it would be better not to be drawn into making a comment saying that while a Mayweather fight is still on the table, he would rather wait a few more days before saying anything. A few days ago, the unbeaten Mayweather twitted that he is not interested in fighting anybody else but Pacquiao.
Arum spent five days in the country and discussed Pacquiao’s plans for 2012. Mayweather still tops the list of priorities, way ahead of prime candidates Miguel Cotto, Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Lamont Peterson.
