On a cold morning on December 23rd, they were offering 1097 random acts of kindness. The result is nothing short of inspiring. 1097 smiles and surprises on

a cold and sunny Sunday afternoon! The Gary Effect! In return, all Lizon wanted was for recipients of the random acts of kindness to pay it forward to someone else one day. The initiative started last year by Karen Lizon in memory of her father, Gary Boittiaux, who hosted community BBQ and fireworks in the North End.

But his indelible mark in the radio broadcast for more than 35 years will not be forgotten; and with his Filipino Journal column, Gabay Ng Buhay, Joe will be remembered by his fatherly advice and his common touch with his kababayans. "Joe's contribution in the print media, with his "Gabay Ng Buhay" column, became a popular collective fodder by his fans in our community. Oh, how the seniors loved Joe Sulit and they followed his column every issue in the Filipino Journal. He is so humbled and yet his brotherly advice covered the wide range of age and backgrounds. And his role as a broadcaster at CKJS and a columnist, Joe had defined the progress and the maturity of our community. When you needed Joe, he was there, rain or shine; snow or blizzard. And Joe Sulit had lived a good life as Sir Winston Churchill writes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We make a living by what we get. we make a life by what we give." And Joe had given so much to our coummunity. We will miss him for long," says Rod E. Cantiveros, Filipino Publisher and vp marketing.

Regine Velasquez opens the year with a big bang

his early part of the year, Regine Velasquez made her presence felt for all pretenders to her throne, announcing via a big concert that she is very much around and still a force to reckon with in the singing industry. Regine opened 2013 with her 25th anniversary concert, aptly titled “Silver” on Jan. 5 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The free repeat concert was an offshoot of her first “Silver” concert last November, when she “lost” her

voice due to viral throat infection on the very first day of the concert. The featured songs on the free repeat concert are associated with Regine’s singing career and include even some of her unreleased songs. Her special guests include Jaya, Rachelle Ann Go, and La Diva. Gloc-9, and Wally and Jose. Her husband Ogie Alcasid and her good friend Janno Gibbs also performed an amusing version on her ‘90s song “Promdi.”

The four-hour concert was arranged and directed by Ryan Cayabyab and Raul Mitra. Musical scoring was provided by the Manila Symphony Orchestra.

Pacquiao even criticized both Dr. Rustico Jimenez, president of the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines and forensic expert Dr. Raquel Fortun for issuing ‘irresponsible and unethical statements.’ In an interview over a radio station, Jimenez said he observed

Pacquiao during TV interviews showing early signs of Parkinson’s disease. Jimenez admitted though that he has not met with Pacquiao to personally check his condition. For her part, Fortun advised Pacquiao to retire in order to prevent further head injury.

Meanwhile, World Boxing Council (WBC) president Don Jose Sulaiman said he’s praying for Pacquiao to be free of health problems after being knockout by Marquez. Sulaiman said that the world of boxing owes so much to Pacquiao and the boxing body has named him the best boxer of the decade.

n the year of auto reviews for the Filipino Journal, there have been several times where I have to review more than one vehicle at a time. In an odd occurrence of multiple vehicles to review from several media agencies, and a heavy travel schedule, I had to figure out how to review three vehicles in a span of 3 days. As opposed to letting

the Acura ILX sit in my driveway while I was travelling, I gave the opportunity to Jackie Doming to take the 2013 Acura ILX for a several days. Jackie Doming is a 2nd year Creative Communications student at Red River College (Princess Campus). Here’s what she had to say about the ILX.

2013 Acura ILX: Not just a pretty face By Jackie Doming

want to start off this review by clarifying I am not an automotive connoisseur by any means. That being said, I do appreciate practical features and a nice paint job on the cars I drive. I was delightfully surprised when I took the Acura ILX for a week-long road test a couple months ago. It’s been a few years since I’ve driven a stick shift, and switching gears on this sporty 6-speed sedan was a breeze – and that’s saying something. The smooth transition made for an easy ride after overcoming my initial fear of driving over the curbs on slick Winnipeg wintered streets. For all the automatic drivers out there, the ILX is also available with a 5-speed

automatic transmission with a manual-shifting mode. The interior of this car is quite lovely, with a classy dash and slick shifter. As far as comfort is concerned, it’s near ergonomic perfection. After a few small adjustments made to the seat, steering and mirrors, I felt the most comfortable I’ve ever been in the driver’s seat (the soft and subtle heated leather seats may have had something to do with it). As far as sporty sedans go, the ILX has plenty of room for passengers and in the trunk. The vehicle can easily fit four adults, comfortably with three little ones in the back. When it comes to the exterior, the ILX is definitely a

looker. I’ve always been a fan of Acura exteriors, and this car is no exception to this rule. As with most Acura and Honda vehicles, the lines of this ILX are smooth and modern with selective silver trimmings. Although she’s no Porsche, for a car so reasonably base priced at $27,500-$30,000, you get a great bang for your buck and feel like a million bucks driving it. I received a lot of compliments when was driving the ILX around town – a nice boost of confidence on the driver’s side. It was a great car with smooth handling, and a proud member in a family of reliable, trustworthy vehicles. Needless to say, I would recommend the ILX to anyone who’s looking for an affordable and attractive car to call their own.
