Consulate Staffers & Volunteers Work Double-Time during Winnipeg Outreach Program
O
riginally scheduled to be a 2-day, 24-hour consular services outreach program to facilitate Philippine ePassport renewals and applications turned into a 3-day, 56-hour marathon for the 7-person consular services team from Toronto. Upon arriving in Winnipeg, the consular services team lead by newly installed Consulate General Pedro Chan had one clear mandate – process as many people as possible. Their work started a full day ahead of schedule on Friday afternoon, lasting until 2am early Saturday morning. ConGen Chan officially opened the outreach program during an interview by CKJS 810 Radio’s Afternoon Pasada host, Lucille Nolasco and invited those wishing to avail of consular services to make their way to Canad Inns Garden City. Overwhelming crowds on Saturday morning started as early as 4am. By 8am, the hotel lobby leading into the consular services area was full and would remain full until early 5am Sunday morning before calling it a 21hour day. Going on no less than 2 hours of sleep, the consular team and dedicated community volunteers were ready to take on the challenges for what was to be the third and final day. Little did anyone know that it would be the longest - 23 hours to be exact, starting at 8am and ending at 7am, early Monday morning. Due to the large crowds rolling over from Saturday, the processing area was moved to the Ambassador
Ballroom. Amidst the large crowds, long wait times throughout the weekend, everyone was upbeat, patient and cooperative. To a crowd of about 250 people, early Monday morning, disappointment, frustration and anger erupted after it was announced that the last 100 applicants left in the cue would be serviced by consular staff. By 7am, the final ePassport applicant had waited well over 20 hours for his passport renewal and left in good spirits. Somewhat satisfied that the consular outreach program offered in Winnipeg, saved him money as he would have had to travel to Toronto. Does Winnipeg need a fulltime consular office? After several consular outreach programs offered in Saskatchewan and Manitoba over the last 12 months, one would seem to think so. Based on the sheer amount of people during the outreach weekend, Con Gen Chan also seems to think there’s a need. Currently in Manila, ConGen Chan is expected to petition the Department of Foreign Affairs to research, evaluate and consider re-opening a Philippine Consulate in Winnipeg, after closing in 1985. Just don’t hold your breath as it might take a while. Establishing a diplomatic post takes time and money. In the meantime, we can only expect a new honourary consul to be named and entrust in that individual to represent the Philippine residents in Manitoba. see page 7

LOURDES - “Source of Life”
F
or a five-hour journey to Lourdes from the Gave of Austerlitz in Paris we boarded the “TGV” (Train a Grande Vitesse - French word for “high-speed train” which normally travels between 270 km/hr and 320 km/hr)). Our hotel, SaintSauveur at 9 Rue Sainte-Marie, is conveniently located near the entrance of the Sanctuaries of Lourdes, and a walking distance to the various places of interest. A small market town of 15,043 inhabitants lying in the foothills of the beautiful Pyrenees mountains in southwestern France, Lourdes is not only a place of pilgrimage; it is also rich in tourist attractions. Approximately 5,000,000 million pilgrims, visitors and tourists (500,000 of these are sick people hoping to be cured or healed miraculously) making it profitable for 400 hotel owners of the city. It all began on the 11th of February 1858, when a 14-year old illiterate girl named Bernadette Soubirous, together with her sister Toinette and a friend, Jeanne Abadie, went to gather firewood in the cave called “Massabielle” (meaning “old Rock”), along the banks of the River Gave de Pau

and experienced the first of the 18 apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary (“Que Soy Era Immaculada Oncenpciou”). Our pilgrimage started with a holy mass at the plain stone altar and lectern of the grotto of Apparitions which stands humbly below the Cathedral of the Holy Rosary. Next to the altar is the tall conical stand containing votive candles that are kept burning constantly. As our devotional gesture we purchased candles to be burnt here. In the evening we joined the rosary and the solemn nighttime procession by candlelight. At the rear of the grotto is the miraculous spring Bernadette is said to have dug, shielded by a glass cover. We sit, pray and contemplate at the rows of benches lined in front of the grotto. Adjacent to the grotto are the healing baths, consisting of small cubicles of ice-cold waters from the spring in which the sick, or some who are terminally ill, or even if you aren’t ill, immerse themselves in the hopes of being cured. “It is because of our need to be reborn, forgiven, purified, reconciled ... that we come to this WATER. We come in memory
of what Jesus said: “If anyone is thirsty let him come to me and drink. The water that I shall give you will become a spring welling up to eternal life” reads a green leaflet handed to all pilgrims at the baths in Lourdes. It is estimated that every year about 350,000 people use the baths to receive grace. There’s a separate section for men and women and you have to come early in the morning to avoid long queues although the sick are given priority. On the crest above the domain are the monumental Stations of the Cross - the 14 Stations consisting of colossal figures, whose statues in cast iron are 2 meters high. At the Sanctuaries of Lourdes are the three Basilicas - Our Lady of the Rosary Basilica, The Upper Basilica (the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception), and the Basilica of St. Pius X (also known as the Underground Basilica). We also visited the Boly Mill, the birthplace and family home of Bernadette. Don’t miss to visit the fortified castle of Lourdes perching on a high rocky promontory above the valley of the Gave. Now a museum displaying the crafts and traditions of the Pyrenees, the fort used to be a military post and then later a state prison. Our pilgrimage to Lourdes deepens and strengthens our faith relived after that glorious moment when we completely submerged, unclothed and humbled, into the WATERS of LOURDES.

Heat, Pulse, Flow, Breathe (On the Origin of Some Vital Medical Instruments)
A
s soon as you enter the doctor’s office for your regular medical checkup, the physician or the assisting nurse will ask you to relax as s/he takes your vital signs. You might have wondered what vital signs really are, especially if your work or interest is not in the field of medical or health care. So, vital signs are measures of various physiological statistics, often taken by health professionals, in order to assess the most basic body functions. The act of taking vital signs normally entails recording (1) body temperature, (2) pulse rate (or heart rate), (3) blood pressure, and (4) respiratory rate. These are four vital signs standard in most medical settings. The standard equipments necessary in measuring these vital signs are a thermometer, a sphygmomanometer, a watch, and a stethoscope. Though, the pulse may be taken by hand, a stethoscope may be required for a patient with a very weak pulse. Thermometer. Developed during the 16th and 17th centuries, the thermometer is a device that measures temperature. It has two important elements: the temperature sensor (for example, the bulb on a mercury thermometer) in which some physical change occurs with temperature, plus a means of converting this physical change into a numerical value (e.g., the scale on a mercury thermometer). Having an old history, its invention is credited to various individuals whom included Cornelius Drebbel, Robert Fludd, Galileo Galilei, and Santorio Santorio. The term comes from the Greek word thermo, which means “warm”; and meter, “to measure.”
Sphygmomanometer. Commonly known as bloodpressure meter, it is a device used to measure blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff to restrict blood flow and a mercury or mechanical pressure meter to measure the pressure. Its invention in 1881 is credited to the Austrian-Jewish physician Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch. Scipione Riva-Rocci, and Italian physician, introduced a more easily used version in 1896. Harvey Cushing, an American neurosurgeon, discovered this device in 1901 and popularized it. The term comes from the Greek word sphygmos (‘pulse’) plus manometer, which means “pressure meter.” Stethoscope - a medical device for listening to the internal sounds of an animal body. It is used often to listen to lung and heart sounds, and also to intestines and blood flow in arteries and veins. In combination with a sphygmomanometer, the stethoscope is commonly used for measuring the blood pressure. Its invention is credited to Rene Laennec, who developed it in France in 1816. The term comes from the Greek word stethos, which means “chest”; and skope, “examination.”
After three days and 56 hours of non-stop work, more ePassport renewals and applications were processed than originally anticipated. Thus saving many hundreds of families from having to fly to Toronto to process “inperson” ePassport applications and renewals. Over two dozen people reclaimed their Philippine citizenship as dual PhilippineCanadian citizens during a Saturday mid-afternoon oath taking presided by Consulate General Chan. Over a hundred Special Powers of Attorney (SPA) were issued and the lives of those individuals can now move forward from a legal standpoint. The consular outreach team worked twice as hard, twice as long. Every single volunteer gave twice as much of their time and energy. The weekend could not have been a success without the dedicated support and passion of the volunteers that made themselves available at Canad Inns Garden City to help assist the consular team and their fellow kababayans through a long and grueling weekend. Will the Philippine Consulate (Toronto) be back in Winnipeg? Yes. We hope it will be sooner than later. There are similar requests for repeat outreach programs in Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. The need is there and that fact has not been lost with Consulate General Chan and the consular team in Toronto. The Filipino Journal will continue to work with the Consulate General (Toronto) in preparation for their next visit to Winnipeg.
The Last Leaf There are so many things and names in this world that we see, encounter, or even use on a daily basis but whose origins we are unfamiliar with. To many people, these pieces of information may seem trivial; but learning about them can be a source of personal empowerment and self-confidence. Remember, knowledge is power. Anyway, these days, information can just be a google away on the Internet.

he Aquino administration expects to save billions of pesos by implementing new budgetary measures including the bulk purchases of its supplies, airline, hotel fees and other utilities, use of procurement cards instead of cash in government agencies, and a central payroll system for government workers. According to Budget Secretary Florencio Abad Jr., the government could bring down its expenses by several billions by entering in wholesale purchases in supplies and utilities. He added that DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas will talk with airline companies on the possible bulk purchase of airline tickets for traveling government officials and employees while Trade Secretary
Gregory Domingo will look into the bulk telephone and Internet subscription for employees. Abad also said the budget department will implement the use of procurement cards instead of cash for all expenditures. He said the procurement card is similar to a debit card given to an accounting officer who will have limitations on how much he can spend and what for. All government agencies are also required to procure all their common supplies and equipment from the Procurement Service. On the salaries of government employees, Abad also said that starting next year, their salaries will be deposited in their bank accounts by the National Treasury under the central payroll system.
Other measures being considered are energy efficiency measures as well as open-source technology for computer software in government offices.
More possible witnesses confirm election fraud
T
wo municipal election officers from Maguindanao have come forward and confirmed election fraud allegations of former election supervisor Lintang Bedol. This was revealed by Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo who said the two municipal election officers along with a computer technician have approached the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and are willing to sign affidavits if asked by the Comelec. Bedol first came out in an interview with ABS-CBN implicating former President Arroyo in the massive rigging of election results in Maguindanao province. He said that he was instructed to make sure that three opposition
senatorial candidates during the 2007 elections, namely President Benigno Aquino III, who was then representative of Tarlac, and Senators Panfilo Lacson and Alan Peter Cayetano, did not get votes in the province.
Bedol claimed former Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos, commissioners Rene Sarmiento and Nicodemo Ferrer authenticated fake election materials.

My Ride Ron Cantiveros
2011 Toyota Highlander AWD Easy & fun to drive! A solid performer!
T
he 2011 Toyota Highland V6 AWD drives like a Camry. On our road test, the Highlander rode quite smoothly over Winnipeg’s infamous pothole-laden streets. This mid-size SUV crossover seats up to 7 people with a 3rd row of seats in the back. Having said that, I always question to practicality of those extra seats, even for larger families. It will seat 4 comfortably and lots of interior storage capacity when the 3rd row seating is stored. The Highland AWD model came with a 250-horsepower 3.5L V6 engine. It was quick off the line and responsive when passing on the highway. Did I mention it drives like the Toyota Camry? It also sounded like a Camry – quiet. A slight purring of the engine when accelerating, and not much else was heard except the tunes coming from the XM Satellite enabled audio system. Other comfort and convenience features include dual zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, power seats, heated mirrors, keyless entry and a rear-view camera. The power lift gate is always an excellent addition for trips to the grocery store. We found it quite convenient when delivering copies of the Filipino
Journal around Winnipeg. Missing on the features list is memory seating. The central console had large knobs and large buttons. Perfect for the winter when you have gloves on and trying to adjust the temperature or changing radio stations! Fuel consumption on the Highlander AWD V6 model, 12.3 (city), 8.8 (highway) and 10.8 (combined) L/100kms. The Highlander comes with seven airbags for front passengers, side-mounted airbags, driver knee airbag, roll-sensing curtain airbags for all passengers in the event of a rollover. Overall, the Highlander is great for families that are looking to get out of the mini-van mould and into the mid-size SUV/crossover models. The Highlander offers great passenger experience, practicality (except for the 3rd row seating) and ample cargo space. Other vehicles in the same category of mid-size SUV crossovers include the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, Mazda CX-9, Ford Flex, Dodge Journey and the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Monkey Puppet seems simple enough. Guy leads boring and mundane life and is visited by a spirit guide to assist him in breaking out of his funk. I’ll give you two guesses as to what form this spirit guide appears as. This 3-person show is will written with quick and witty
one-liners throughout; many of which are pop culture references. You’ll find yourself laughing at the often-mean but very funny Narrator but there are times Henry, our bumbling buffoon of a protagonist, delivers his dialogue too quickly and punch lines are lost.
The show’s writer and director, Gio Navarro, takes you on a strange and humourous “journey” or self-realization. The show clocks in at an hour so, if you’re looking for a quick fix before your next show, take time and catch monkey puppet.
There aren’t very many shows about those who are in their twenties. Being 27 years old, this show felt a nice breath of fresh air. Party Worth Crashing is a song cycle. This means that there is no plot but rather a collection of
songs centred on a single theme. I’ll let you guess what the theme is. Some moments did feel a little over the top and took away from the “I’ve totally been to this party” feeling. The harmonies are tight and the show flows with a nice balance of toe tapping fun numbers to a
couple emotional numbers we can all relate to if you are or have lived through your twenties. Watch for Corben Kushneryk as he really shines. Kushneryk’s voice is like butter and will raise the goosebumps on your arms as soon as he hits his first note.
Cancer has taken our loved ones away from us. We really don’t like Cancer. We actually hate cancer. A world without Cancer would be wonderful. These are all statements that you hear regularly when Cancer is brought up in every day conversation. Rarely, do you find someone brave enough to laugh in the face of Cancer. Thanks to writer/star Bruce Horak, we’re able to do just that. Together we can look cancer in the eye and laugh.
As a cancer survivor himself, Horak, personified Cancer as a misunderstood and egotistical showman as a way to bring some humerous light to the dark world that is Cancer. This character is putting on a show in celebration of… Cancer. He is confused and thinks every time he is mentioned it is in a positive light. It is half way through when he realizes that he is not worshipped but in fact, hated. Horak breaks down the fourth wall and interacts with the audience
throughout the entire show. This makes for a wonderful up and down, emotional rollercoaster as you listen or share your own true-life cancer stories; Horak does a superb job of seamlessly weaving these stories into his act. Though this show may not be for everyone, I heavily recommend this show to anyone who has been affected by Cancer. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll definitely feel stronger by the time you leave the theatre.
Mullets, Beer, Trailer Parks and… musical numbers? Sound like fun? You bet! The cast of the Great American Trailer Park Musical brings the Armadillo Acres Trailer Park to Winnipeg through song and dance. The cast is funny, they sound
fantastic and bring the term “trailer trash” to a new light. The musical itself can seem a little repetitive. The songs usually just recap the scene prior and do not really move the story forward; the cast does a good job in hitting the comedic moments that prevent
these songs from slowing the show down. Nikki Duval, Jackie Kurceba really run away with this one; both characters are believable and draw you in with their emotional numbers. Mallory Schellenberg does a wonderful job as the not-sosmart but incredibly funny, Pickles.

Introducing Consulate General Pedro Chan
Hitting the ground running in Winnipeg
H
is first visit to Winnipeg was back in the late 1980’s to visit former Honourary Consul Dr. Roland Guzman. His return to Winnipeg during the consular outreach program would be as the newly installed Consulate General in Toronto. While the mandate of the consular services team was to process as many people as possible, it was Consulate General Chan’s mandate to meet as many people in our Filipino community as possible. In a courtesy call to the Mayor’s Office at City Hall, Con Gen Chan met with Acting Deputy Mayor Paula Havixbeck for a brief interchange of ideas and insight into the contributions of Filipinos to the City of Winnipeg over the last 50 years. Mayor Sam Katz was unavailable during this time. Unfortunately, no key to the city was presented to Con Gen Chan. Maybe next time. Not letting any media opportunity pass, an in-studio
radio interview at CKJS 810 AM lasted well over an hour during Afternoon Pasada, hosted by Lucille Nolasco. During the interview, Con Gen Chan formally announced the start of consular services at Canad Inns Garden City and urged green Philippine passport holders to renew them in exchange for the new, more secure red Philippine ePassports. Throughout the course of the weekend, Con Gen Chan made it to several community association picnics including the Bacoor Association picnic and the Pasig Family Picnic at Kildonan Park; Pangasinan Group of Manitoba picnic at St. Vital Park on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, Con Gen Chan made an appearance at the annual Philippine Basketball Association Golf Tournament picnic also at Kildonan Park. In addition, he was able to visit the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba on an invitation by PCCM President, Lito Taruc, including several private events on Sunday evening.

Explore Manitoba
- Summer
Beach-a-holics Unite!
W
hen it comes to fun in the sun, escaping the hustle and bustle of Winnipeg, there are two popular summer beach destinations along Highway 59 and into Manitoba’s Interlake region. Close to home, you can enjoy Birds Hill Provincial Park. For something a bit more grand, there’s Grand Beach Provincial Park. Birds Hill Provincial Park An easy 20 minute drive away from Winnipeg, Birds Hill Provincial Park is one of Manitoba’s most popular getaways and the perfect place to sit on a beach, fire up the BBQ and enjoy Mother Nature. Crowds of sun worshippers and beach enthusiasts escaped the city during our recent heat wave to have a little fun in the sun. While most of the summer activities revolve around the manmade beach, Birds Hill has many other summer activities to offer. There are hiking and horseback riding trails throughout the park. Park visitors can try self guided Bur Oak and White-tailed Deer trails as they information signs along the trail. The paved 7.2km Lakeview Trail is great for walking, jogging, cycling and inline skating. For the active parents, this would be a nice leisurely stroll with a baby cart. Or if you’re looking for something more adult group friendly and different, you can try renting a two or fourperson tandem bicycles. Every summer since 1974, Birds Hill Provincial Park plays host to one of North America’s largest folk music festival, The Winnipeg Folk Festival. The 3-day festival attracted over 70,000 people earlier this month.
In 1984, Birds Hill hosted Pope John Paul II during his papal visit to Manitoba. I recall my journey that day as I heard mass with my family. Pope’s Hill, named in honour of the Pope’s visit still remains today. Grand Beach Provincial Park In this record setting heat wave, Grand Beach is one of the best Manitoba day-trips to consider this summer. Located eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg, Grand Beach Provincial Park and Grand Beach is an hour’s drive north of Winnipeg, along Hwy 59. This beach-a-holic getaway with it’s powder-fine white sand stretches for over 3kms. Once famed in Playboy magazine in the 1980’s as one of the top beaches of the world, Grand Beach remains to be one of the premier summer beach destinations for many Manitobans. After a savage windstorm in October 2011, Grand Beach now sports a rebuilt boardwalk and is currently undergoing massive renovations and improvements. Over $10.5 million dollars is being used for park improvements and upgrades. It’s going to be grander than ever. Grand Beach offers much more excitement for the entire family. Planning on staying for more than a day, there are campgrounds, motels, bed & breakfasts and private cottages available for rent. The area offers an endless list of fun sports and recreational activities to suit every budget and experience. Let’s see how long this list is! ATV, Quad bikes, bird watching, fishing, golfing, hiking, jet skiing, kayaking, kite boarding, mountain biking, sailing, swimming, water
skiing, wake boarding, windsurfing and wildlife watching. I’m sure we missed a couple and if I have, please make sure to let me know for next year! New to Grand Beach is Thunder Mountain water slides, located next to the East Gate entrance to Grand Beach Provincial Park. For all the golfers, the 18-hole 6664 yard, par 72 Grand Pines Golf Course in Traverse Bay, north of Grand Beach has scenic and challenging holes to excite and frustrate every golfer. The 5443 yard, par 71 Beaches Golf Course is also another course to book a tee time. Golf in the morning, relax on the beach in the afternoon. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a hot Manitoba summer day. Feeling like Lady Luck is on your side? Another attraction along Hwy 59 to consider is South Beach Casino & Resort, located on the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Reserve. Over 600 slots machines, Blackjack tables and a poker room to satisfy the gambler in you. Have we mentioned FREE yet? Yes, it’s free to visit all Manitoba Provincial Parks. For the third consecutive year, entry to Manitoba Parks are free to ensure that all families can play in the province’s natural outdoor playground.

Bernadette Sembrano afflicted with Bell’s Palsy
T
V and radio personality Bernadette Sembrano first noticed something was wrong when she felt pain on her ears while taping the July 3 episode of “Salamat Dok,” an ABS-CBN medical television program which she’s hosting. Another attack occurred on the same day while she was working on “TV Patrol,” wherein she discovered she can’t control the blinking and closing of her eyes. Although on examination her ophthalmologist found nothing wrong with her, she got even more worried as the symptoms worsened. Sembrano went on to see a neurologist for more tests,
who eventually confirmed that she has Bell’s Palsy, a form of facial paralysis resulting from dysfunction of the facial nerve that results in the inability to control facial muscles. The veteran newscaster and radio-TV host disclosed during a TV interview that she was shock upon learning of her condition. Nevertheless she finds comfort in knowing that Bell’s Palsy is not a life-threatening disorder. The disease which was named after Scottish anatomist Charles Bell who first described it, is considered self-limiting and treatment may be unnecessary Sembrano started her career as newscaster on IBC-13 and in 1998 transferred to GMA.

These Peer Helpers completed eight weeks of intensive training for three hours every Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. under Lynn Crawford of the Peer Seeking Solutions and Milli Khan of St. Raphael Wellness Centre from May-June. Among the skills learned were: listening empathically, keeping divulged information confidential, good interpersonal relations, good communication and other skills related to dealing with seniors. These trained Peer Helpers had their graduation on July 4, 2011 at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) at 5:00 p.m to 7:30 p.m. They are now not only Peer Helpers to Filipino Seniors but also for other senior peers in Winnipeg. These trained Peer Helpers will link seniors needing help with social workers, Age and Opportunity staff, police, and other government service providers to alleviate their abuse-related situations. Most of the Peer Helpers were former scientists, teachers, agriculturists, nurses, accountants, and social workers. Gloria’s ‘Trojan Horse’
ormer Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan, the accused mass murderer of “Maguindanao Massacre” infamy almost convinced President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III into considering him as state witness in the multiple murder case against his father Andal Ampatuan Sr., his brother Andal Ampatuan Jr., and himself. P-Noy seemed to entertain the notion after he heard Zaldy’s “confession” during an interview with ABS-CBN Radio-TV. Then, suddenly, Zaldy digressed and began spilling the beans on Gloria MacapagalArroyo and her husband Mike for complicity in electoral frauds in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) during the 2004 presidential and 2007 senatorial elections.
that since it was just an opinion. But it seems that – subconsciously -- Lambino was not convinced that Gloria was indeed innocent and that she would stand nary a chance of being absolved in the lower and appellate courts. If so, then the Supreme Court would be where Gloria would take her last stand. In my article, “Arroyo’s Court of Last Defense” (PerryScope, December 8, 2010), I wrote: “Indeed, with the Ombudsman as her line of ‘first defense’ and the Supreme Court her line of ‘last defense,’ Arroyo stands on a solid footing safe from prosecution. She could be ‘untouchable.’ However, if Aquino were to exert his political influence and work to consolidate his forces in the House of Representatives to take a bolder approach in impeaching Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, they might find a way to proceed with the impeachment proceeding and break the impregnability of Arroyo’s Court of Last Defense.” As it turned out, the House impeached Gutierrez; however, she resigned before the Senate trial began. Consequently, the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) interviewed 27 candidates for Ombudsman, four of which were shortlisted and submitted to P-Noy to select his choice for Ombudsman. But Gloria’s hold on a majority group of Supreme Court justices appears to be slipping. There is no more assurance that the “utang na loob” – debt of gratitude – of her appointees to the high court would still be as strong as before. Within a few years, most of them would most likely consider their indebtedness repaid and relieved of any more obligation to protect her. It would not then come as a surprise that Gloria would attempt to re-establish the Office of the Ombudsman as her line of “first defense.” But she has to move fast to influence P-Noy into appointing someone who could -- or would -- shield her from prosecution in the same manner Gutierrez did before.
Singing like a canary And just about the same time, fugitive Lintang Bedol emerged after four years in hiding and started singing like a canary. And nothing could have amused P-Noy more than Bedol collaborating Zaldy’s revelations. Interviewed by ABSCBN News, Bedol -- former Maguindanao election supervisor --claimed that massive cheating occurred during the 2004 presidential elections. He also collaborated Zaldy’s revelation that Gloria gave instructions in the 2007 senatorial elections to use “dagdag-bawas” (vote paddingvote shaving) scheme to make sure that Benigno Aquino III, Panfilo Lacson, and Alan Peter Cayetano – who were running for re-election -- got “zero” votes. The cheating resulted in 12-0 victory for her Lakas-Kampi senatorial candidates in Mindanao. So, what started as an attempt to become state witness in the Maguindanao massacre, Zaldy – with the collaboration of Bedol – torpedoed Gloria and Mike for electoral fraud in 2004 and 2007. Instantly, Zaldy and Bedol became priceless assets to P-Noy not only in prosecuting Gloria for her role in the “Hello Garci” election cheating scandal but for the massive corruption that existed in the ARMM region during Zaldy’s reign as governor. “Trojan horse” There is one candidate for “Court of Last Defense” Ombudsman who I believe is Recently, Gloria’s legal Gloria’s “Trojan horse,” presented spokesman Atty. Raul Lambino to P-Noy to make sure that if he’s was interviewed on TV. When appointed Ombudsman, Gloria asked if he believes that Gloria would remain untouchable for the was innocent of the allegations next seven years. against her, his answer was it’s up Last July 11, 2011, P-Noy to the Supreme Court to decide told reporters in Roxas City her guilt or innocence. I find his that he’ll not interview all four answer rather odd. He could have candidates on the shortlist, maybe said, “I believe Mrs. Arroyo is only the two who are in his “own innocent of all those allegations,” shortlist.” However, he didn’t and nobody would have refuted
name them because he has yet to inform the other two who were no longer in the running. Amado P. Macasaet in his latest Malaya column, “Chiz, Ochoa favor GMA,” said that there is a campaign against retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Conchita Carpio Morales as the next Ombudsman. “Strangely,” said Macasaet, “the campaign is headed by President Aquino’s own executive secretary assisted by Senator Chiz Escudero who is presumed to be a Malacañang ally. “Even more strange is the possibility that the next Ombudsman was a staunch defender of Gloria Arroyo and counsel of resigned Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez when she was under impeachment threat by the House of Representatives. “Last Tuesday [July 12, 2011], Chiz Escudero accompanied Artemio Toquero, former secretary of justice, to Malacañang for an interview with President Aquino. If Toquero, a member of the Iglesia ni Cristo, is appointed Ombudsman, Gloria Arroyo would have won her campaign against Mrs. Carpio Morales.” Two days later, on July 14, PNoy interviewed Carpio-Morales and PCGG Commissioner Gerard Mosquera, who presumably were the two on P-Noy’s “own shortlist.” It became apparent that Tuquero was not on P-Noy’s “own shortlist.” But nevertheless, Escudero accompanying Tuquero to Malacañang for that interview with P-Noy seemed like a concerted effort by him and Executive Secretary Jojo Ochoa to pressure P-Noy into appointing Tuquero. With Ochoa and Escudero backing Tuquero to the hilt, I would not be surprised if PNoy would accede to appointing Tuquero. And if P-Noy appointed Tuquero, could it be that a “political settlement” of the Aquino-Arroyo war might be in the works, and which would ultimately shield Gloria from prosecution? Makes one wonder what roles would Escudero and Ochoa play in things to come? “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” If P-Noy is really sincere in pursuing his campaign promise, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap,” then he should beware of Greeks bearing gifts. If King Priam of Troy had followed a wise man’s advice, “Do not trust the horse, Trojans. Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts.” Indeed, Troy would have survived the Greek invasion if King Priam did not allow the huge wooden horse to enter Troy. The appointment of the Ombudsman would be the defining moment of P-Noy’s presidency. Will he be written in history as the leader who stopped corruption and broke the yoke of poverty? Or will he be just another cheap politician who broke the promises he made?

I regret for not getting involved in the Stradcom conflict It made LTO administrator Virginia look like derelict I should have fired my shooting buddy Virginia Cuz’ she’s causing me headaches and hernia. llustration by Dave San Pedro I regret for failing to free from China the Filipino drug mules Convicted to death for violating their anti-drug trafficking rules And now that my first year has But to gain their freedom was too come to an end high a price to pay I’m here to give you my report for Cuz’ trading the Spratlys for their the year-end freedom is out of the way. My friends I’ll say it clear I’ll tell you all the things you’d And lastly, I regret buying a thirdwant to hear. hand Porsche sports car
P-Noy’s Sona-ta
M
y investigative reporter James Macaquecquec emailed me a draft of President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III’s 2011 State of the Nation Address (Sona). James told me that the draft was leaked by an assistant of P-Noy’s scriptwriter, Mai-Mai. Remember her of Twitter fame or infamy? But there’s a caveat – the document was not verified
that it was indeed written by MaiMai. Well, you be the judge. The following is P-Noy’s draft Sona which seems to be more of a “State of the Nation Address – Tell All” or Sona-ta. Here it is:
My dear shooting buddies, classmates, cronies, and my “boss” It was a very exciting year More than what I could bear – the Filipino people. I traveled to many countries far and near More than Gloria did in her first year.
Regrets I’ve had a few But what the heck I’m just new I did what I had to do And learn as I go. I thoroughly planned each junket And budgeted it to save for my next junket My only regret is that I could have traveled more And beautiful chicks I could have met more. I regret for not responding to the Luneta hostage fiasco And I should have fired my shooting buddy Rico It was his job to handle the murderous melee But instead he chose to flee.
I enjoyed driving it around with my girlfriends near and far But Juana Change lampooned me and my Porsche in a video hit So I decided to sell it.
I’ll try to win my lost friends back And work with them with a lot of tack. I’ll try to keep the trust of my “boss” -- the people And I’ll work harder on the double My goal is to make the people happy And for me never again to be sloppy. And to my critics I have this to say You can attack me every hour of the day But this I tell you: you can keep on ranting Cuz’ you can’t dent my 64% approval rating.
Yes, there were times I’m sure you all knew When I bit off more than I could chew But I faced you all But what excites me more is And I stood tall and I did it my way. meeting people Especially women who are beautiful I made a lot of boo-boo and noble And my enemies call me a dodo One of them would be the star But they can say all they want to Who will be my bride to the altar. say I promise to do a good job in my Cuz’ I always did it my way. second year And promise that I’ll give you my Yes, it was my way. ear For there’s only one way that I can NOTE: I just heard from James that his source told him that P-Noy succeed And that is to take your advice to rejected the Sona-ta written by MaiMai and that P-Noy decided not to accomplish my deed. tell all and only give a narration of I made a lot of boo-boos in my first all the good things he did in his first year. year Which I plan not to repeat in my second year

but Diego wouldn’t back down. Sanchez kept moving forward and bringing the fight to Kampman. Two more rounds are exactly what this fight needed. 3) Lyoto Machida vs Rampage Jackson at UFC 123. -In another controversial split decision, Jackson was awarded the victory over Machida. The first two rounds were more of a staring contest than a fight, but the third round Machida came alive and rocked Rampage. If it went to a fourth round, I’m not sure Jackson would have survived. 2) BJ Penn vs Jon Fitch at UFC 127 -This is a fight that ended as a draw. The first two rounds were even as these welterweights battled on the ground. Then the third round, Fitch dominated in a 10-8 round. Even though it seemed to give him the edge, the judges saw the fight as a draw. Two more rounds would have spelled doom for BJ Penn, as he already had nothing left in the gas tank for round three. 1) Tito Ortiz vs Rashad Evans at UFC 73 -This was a fight Tito Ortiz would have won, had he not been docked a point for grabbing the fence. Two more rounds would have let us know for sure if Ortiz could beat Evans. However, due to an injury to Phil Davis, we’ll get three rounds instead, as Tito Ortiz has stepped up to face Rashad Evans in a rematch at UFC 133 August 6th. So the man
Main Events five rounds works so well. I am very happy with the UFC’s decision to make the change. Now how do let’s find a way to get them to implement sudden death rounds for draws.

Five rounds for Filipino fighter
F
ilipino fighter and Middleweight contender, Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz will fight in the main event at UFC 138, November 5th, in Birmingham, England. His opponent is Chris “The Crippler” Leben, who is coming off a 21 second knock out win over MMA Legend, Wanderlei Silva. What makes this a historical fight, is that it will be UFC’s first non-title fight scheduled for five rounds. The rule used to be that all non-title fights were three, five minute rounds and only match ups with the championship on the line were allowed a fourth and fifth round. UFC President, Dana White made the announcement early June, that non-title main events will go five rounds, and Munoz versus Leben will be the first ones with that honor. Munoz is known to have the most vicious ground and pound in the Middleweight Division. If he can fight smart and take Leben down, he will win this fight. As
for Chris Leben’s key to winning, he needs to turn this fight into a brawl and try to catch Munoz with one of those heavy hands. As for five round fights with no belt up for grabs, I’m all for it. Looking back at some of UFC’s close fights, poor decisions and draws, I’ve made a list of my Top Five Fights that could have used the two extra rounds. 5) Brandon Vera vs Randy Couture at UFC 105 - Vera lost this fight by a split decision, but I had him winning rounds 2 and 3. Couture clinched Vera against the cage for most of the fight, but Vera hurt Couture in the second round and did more damage in the third. If this went two more rounds, I believe, Brandon Vera would have taken it by TKO 4) Martin Kampmann vs Diego Sanchez at UFC on Versus 3 -Kampmann lost by split decision though many felt he won the fight. Kampann spent the first round battering Sanchez,
that was on the verge of getting the boot from the UFC, could find himself in title contention if he beats Evans. From these five fights and along with so many others, the rule change to make non-title
