Vickar Automotivegroup donates $20,000 to PCCM, a total of $135,000 to date
T
he history of Larry and Tova Vickar’s philanthropy is firmly attached with the history of the founding of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba. And this attachment has become much stronger when Larry Vickar, president of Vickar Automotive Group, handed the donation of $20,000, which makes a total of $135,000 financial support to PCCM. In attendance during the special ceremony are the PCCM executive officers and board members headed by Lito Taruc, PCCM president and the Filipino employees and executive officers of his automotive conglomerate. “Since the beginning of the formation of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba, we have been partners in forging various initiatives to realize the dreams of the Filipinos in Winnipeg and in Manitoba to have a cultural centre. Our partnership with the Filipino community goes back to the late 60’s when doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals started settling in Winnipeg. As I as go back to many years of our close relationship with the Filipinos, our slogan “Where customers send their friends” came into existence with the 1st Filipino whom we met and became close friend, Greg Villela. Greg became our close friends, and of course, he bought a truck which he used to work in the courier business, at which he used as well to bring friends to me who became our customers,” says Larry with a smile. As Larry committed, he began setting aside funds from the sales of vehicles from the Filipino customers and this agreement was to end in 2004 when the PCCM opened.
“Tova and I discussed to further our involvement with the Filipino community and we decided to continue our yearly donation in order to help the on going financial sustainability of the Centre. We have to give back to the Filipino community in which we have many friends. We are aware of the tremendous energy exerted by the founders of the centre and we felt that what we had started must continue to support PCCM into the future, We are very thankful to be a part of this endeavour. And we are always be a part of this centre: the pride of the Filipinos in Winnipeg and Manitoba,” Larry continues. To this date, the total cumulative amount donated by Vickar Automotive Group to PCCM is $135,000. Larry Vickar cited that both he and his partner in life, his wife, Tova, have been attending numerous activities in the Filipino community and they feel at home and comfortable amongst the many friends over the years. Both have been so involved in various fundraising activities. Larry and Tova’s interaction with the Filipinos is not only during fiesta or wedding or associations; anniversary and fundraising actitivities but as well they employ 26 Filipinos in the business some of whom have been working for many years. “We are fortunate to have these kababayans as part of our organization,” Larry adds. Vickar Community Chevrolet, the founding company of Vickar Automotive Group, has consistently serve the various communities in Winnipeg but none more than the Filipino client. From the dealership on Main St. to Transcona, the company has expanded over the years
to include Mitsubishi, Nissan and recently, Izuzu. During the donation ceremony, Larry introduced the Filipino team members in his organization, from Vickar Community Chevrolet, Noel Cadelina and Lito Dabu, sales; Arnold Dulay, parts; Joan Macapagal, deal desk; and Dyrol Amorganda, special events. Vickar Autobody and Glass, Joelan Mendoza, collision repair advisor; Darrell Lorbis and Vicrigor Sofronio, body techs; Gerald Garcia, paint prep; Vickar Mitsubishi, Gil Magsayo, asst. sales manager; Gerry Restar, Nharen Basa and Patrick Crisostomo, techs; Waverly Mitsubishi, Nelson Lantin, sales manager;; Rommel Fajardo, sales; Vickar Nissan, Ted Bobier, sales; Armando Visda, Carlo Ingala and Ron Schultz, techs; and Jeral Santos, tech apprentice; Vickar Nissan Detail, Miguel Julion, Jayson Lasquete,
Andrew Ramos, and Angelo Tukuero. He also introduced Randy Viray as special guest. And to give credit to his executives, Larry introduced his son, Sam Vickar, general manager and sales manager of Vickar Community Chevrolet; Stephen Vickar, president of Vickar Mitsubishi; Daniel MicFlickier, partner and General Manager; Rino Attardo, president of Waverly Mitsubishi; and Steven Minken, marketing director of Vickar Automotive Group. Larry mentioned his closer relationship with Drs. Roland and Irene Guzman, and with the founders and former PCCM presidents, from Resty Taruc, to Dr. Romy Magsino, the late Linda Natividad Cantiveros, and Rod Escobar Cantiveros and now with the current PCCM president, Lito Taruc. After accepting the donation, Lito Taruc acknowleged the continued friendship and support
of Larry and Tova Vickar to the Filipino community and to other groups in Winnipeg and in Manitoba. He thanked Larry and Tova’s loyalty in helping the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba. He assured them that every penny of their donation will be spent with complete transparency. Lou Fernandez, PCCM adviser, emceed the ceremony. Letty Antonio offered prayer. A light dinner was served. mid growing tensions in the West Philippine Sea fueled by reported intrusions by Chinese vessels and aircraft into areas within Philippine jurisdiction, a Philippine Navy ship dropped anchor the other day off Pag-Asa Island in the Kalayaan Island Group in the Spratlys. Navy supply ship BRP Benguet (LST 507) unloaded troops and fresh provisions and will return to its base in Palawan shortly after completing its delivery. Pag-Asa, also called Isla, is the biggest of the seven islets in the Kalayaan group occupied by Filipino troops and is also home to 60 civilians. Aside from China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei also have claims in the Spratly Islands which is believed to contain huge deposits of oil and gas. The country’s biggest warship, World War II-era BRP Rajah Humabon, has been also deployed for routine patrol within the Philippines’ territorial waters near Palawan. At Malacañang, Secretary Ricky Carandang of the President’s Communications group reiterated that the country’s right to defend its territories was not meant to agitate China. He said the Philippines would continue discussions with China through all channels. He added

My Ride Ron Cantiveros
Review: Ford 2011 Explorer Powerhouse SUV
W
hen asked if the Filipino Journal was interested in driving a 2011 Ford Explorer for a week? Absolutely was the quick and simple response. Ford Motor Company of Canada provided us with the award winning 2011 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD model to drive for a week.. This vehicle was fully loaded with the latest technology bells and whistles to enhance your SUV driving experience. Driving the 2011 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD was an absolute pleasure. This is a big vehicle with an extremely spacious interior, comfortable seating and power everything. Big seats and big space makes this SUV a great family vehicle and a step-up from the family minivan. The Explorer Limited came with a wide range of safety features – pressure-based crash sensor airbags, active blind spot information system, cross traffic alert system, rear inflatable seat belts, adaptive cruise control, collision warning system and ActiveTrac with RCS (Roll Stability Control). Ford SNYC also comes with 911 Assist, SOS Post-Crash Alert System and the MyKey program encourages safe teen driving, seat belt use and limiting top vehicle speed. The Explorer comes in three models: base, XLT and the Limited. Base model pricing starts at $29,999 while our Limited test drive model starts at $41,199, with an added $8000 in extra features such as 20” polished aluminum rims, luxury leather seating, navigation system and a fully featured technology package. Part of the package included air-conditioned cooled leather seats which is a feature that I could truly appreciate during our hot Manitoba summers. And for our long dry Manitoba winters, there’s the heated leather seats. Apart from driving the Ford Explorer, I probably spent as much time in park as I ran through the Explorer’s rich technology offering. Most of the technology features can be controlled on the slow-torespond 8” in-dash navigation and entertainment touch screen console or push-buttons on the steering wheel. The slow-to-respond touch screen lags slowly compared to touch interfaces on smartphone and tablet devices.
The Ford SYNC system easily paired my Blackberry Bold 9800 via Bluetooth. Once paired, I was able to access my entire phone book, answer and make handsfree calls using voice commands and enable textto-voice features that read incoming text messages as you drive. Getting my iPad, iPod and Blackberry connected to the entertainment system was relatively quick and easy. Already connected via Bluetooth, the entertainment system was able to stream audio directly from my Blackberry media player and displayed the artist, song and cover on the display console. My iPad was plugged into the onboard USB connection and the iPod I normally use while I jog, was connected through a stereo connection. Controlling playlists on my Blackberry and iPad was done through steering wheel controls, touch screen on the dash or directly controlled on the devices. As gas prices start to creep up to 131.9 per litre in Manitoba, buyers in the SUV segment are hoping for as much fuel efficiency as possible. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost I-4 technology is expected to deliver as much as 20 percent better fuel economy than the 2010 model. Fuel economy on the Limited is 12.5l per 100km in the city and 8.8l per 100km on the highway. After a week driving the Ford Explorer, I realize that I miss driving an SUV and riding high above the traffic. Likewise, this vehicle needs to tested in the winter where Manitoba winters may give the Ford Explorer a run for its money. Maybe when the 2012 model comes out, we can only hope. Visit Ford.ca for complete specifications on the 2011 Ford Exlporer. Competitors: Chevrolet Traverse LT AWD, Honda Pilot Touring AWD, Ford Flex SEL AWD, Acura MDX, Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Publisher’s Note: My Ride is a new editorial automobile feature of the Filipino Journal that focuses on reviewing the latest offering of auto manufacturers. Our goal is to provide our readers with relevant, fun, interesting and timely information to prospective buyers and automobile enthusiasts. As always, we are relentlessly working to provide our readers with new and exciting features.

Auckland, the “City of Sails”
N
o other city in the world with a waterside location has more boats per capita aside from the hundreds of yachts often dotting the harbour than New Zealand’s city, AUCKLAND, earning this place the nickname, “City of Sails”. About one in three Auckland’s households owns a boat. Also known as the “maiden with a hundred lovers”, this biggest Polynesian city of 1.4 million people with a vibrant mix of European, South Pacific, Asian, and indegenous Maori culture flourishes as the largest industrial, educational and commercial centre of New Zealand. One of the cleanest and most peaceful, Auckland with its subtropical climate has plenty of parks and open green spaces, scenic landscapes dotted with dormant volcanoes and hillsides cloaked with rainforests, enchanting islands and beaches, and stately old Victorian buildings and houses of wrought iron and balconies. We explored the city on our own and travelled farther afield by hiring a vehicle as the best option. There are however many tours on
offer which will take you to many different places of interest throughout the region. The common legal age to rent a car is 21. In New Zealand like in Australia always drive on the left side of the road. We experienced first hand the culture mix of this sophisticated metropolis by taking a walk down Queen Street, the major commercial thoroughfare and main outdoor shopping area in the heart of the city. One of the most famous landmarks of Auckland, Mount Eden, an extinct eponymous volcano with a bowl-like crater about 50 meters deep, is the highest natural point in Auckland providing good views in all directions over the city. To the north and barely three hours away from Auckland we took a day trip to seaside township of Paihia, the gateway to the beautiful Bay of Islands, a cluster of big and small islands with sheltered coves and sandy beaches of spectacular scenery in a subtropical paradise. On a high-speed yellow and black Dolphin Discovery catamaran cruise we discovered the islands and saw the iconic “Hole in the Rock” and travelled though it. We’re
suppose to come close or encounter dolphins/whales as the skipper had announced but unfortunately none of them showed up. We enjoyed the island stop at Otehei Bay resort in Unupukapuka Island. West of Auckland city centre is Piha Beach of unspoiled black sands, the birthplace of New Zealand surfing. Then we headed on a picturesque trip to Mission Bay, a place rich in history and culture, and strolled along The Promenade lined with restaurants and cafes where you can have a Movenpick icecream or a fat-free cone of Paradiso gelato. On to Rotorua, about three hour-drive south from Auckland
with several nice towns and villages along the way. With a Maori guide we experienced “Te Puia”, a place of Maori culture and a thermal valley wonderland of boiling mud pools, spouting geysers and mineral terraces. We gained an insight and understanding of the traditional Maori culture and history though a guided tour of the reconstructed Pakirangi Maori Village and the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, the Rainbow Springs Nature Park and the Agrodome. The tour ended at the Maori traditional meetinghouse where we watched a performance of traditional dances and chants. At the end of the show with

June 20 - July 5, 2011 audience participation we were able to speak some Maori words: “Haere mai” for welcome, “Kia ora” for hello, and “Haere ra” for goodbye. A must-see for any traveller to New Zealand is the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a labyrinth of limestone caves and formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Gliding silently in the dark by paddled boat on the underground river under thousands of magically sparkling glowworms is an experience we will never forget. By doing so we became a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history of the original world famous caves.

The New ‘Supremo’
The ARMM election postponement bill overwhelmingly passed in the House of Representatives. But it was dealt a severe blow in the Senate when Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government, archived the bill, which effectively killed it. Then he caught everybody by surprise when he turned around and resurrected the bill for debate and floor vote. Consequently, the bill passed by a razor-thin majority of 13-7 vote. However, many wondered if P-Noy struck a deal with Bongbong linking the passage of the postponement bill Cronyism P-Noy demonstrated his to a favorable resolution of the propensity for appointing his Marcos burial issue. cronies using “trust” as the key – and perhaps, the only -- criterion. In my editorial, “Cronyism in the province of Ilocos Norte, not at the Aquino government” (Global Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Balita, June 5, 2011), I wrote: Cemetery) as originally requested “Once again, President Benigno by the Marcos family. But whichever way it’s going in August 2011. While the notion of postponing the elections has to be, P-Noy got what he had been many advantages -- foremost aiming for: political power. Solomon or Caligula… postponement! or Machiavelli? P-Noy and the bishops But with all his political fter one year in office, President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino has consolidated his grip on power with a series of maneuvers that placed his “shooting buddies,” classmates, and friends -- known as his “Kabarilan, Ka-klase, and Kaibigan” or KKK – in important positions in his administration. With the KKK forming the base of his power, P-Noy now reigns supreme as the new “Supremo.” The question is: Is he going to rule with Solomonic wisdom or the cunning of Caligula?
victories, the big battle looms ahead. P-Noy’s stand in support of the passage of the Reproductive Health bill stirred up a hornet’s nest in the Catholic Church. The influential bishops threatened him with excommunication. But he stood his ground. A few days ago, Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos was reported in the news as saying, “He is not interested to be the President. I can see that. He does not plan. He does not study. He does not have his own decision and just let his friends fulfill it. He should just resign then.” But Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda immediately hit back describing Pueblos as “ignorant of the virtues of charity, humility and prudence.” Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, the tiny minority group allied with ex-president and now congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo demanded that P-Noy’s KKK buddies face congressional investigation for anomalies involving them. Unfazed, P-Noy let his allies and spokesmen parry all the attacks. So far he had cunningly kept his adversaries at bay. But how long could he sustain a strong defense against their incessant attacks? Is P-Noy going to outwit them using Solomonic wisdom or Caligula’s cunningness? Solomon and the baby The story goes that when two mothers brought a baby to King Solomon for him to judge who the real mother was, King Solomon declared that there is only one fair solution: cut the baby in half and each mother shall receive half of the baby. The real mother cried, “My Lord, do not kill the baby. Give it to her!” The other woman said, “It shall be neither mine nor yours -- divide it!” Solomon then gave the baby to the real mother realizing that a true mother’s instincts were to protect the life of her baby. Caligula and his horse During the first two years of his reign, Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Caligula, was effective and politically capable of ruling. He initiated the construction of two new aqueducts and annexed the Kingdom of Mauretania making it into a province of Rome. He cunningly worked to increase the power of the emperor and return it to Julius Caesar’s autocratic rule. His most famous – or infamous – act was his appointment of his favorite horse, Incitatus, as a Consul and Senator of Rome. Solomon or Caligula? Solomon became famous for his wisdom while Caligula became notorious for his cunning. Is the new “Supremo” Benigno Aquino III going to rule with Solomonic wisdom or with the cunning of Caligula? Like the Pinoys would say, abangan…

Filipinos at the postal strike’s picket line
T
he members of the Winnipeg Local of Canadian Union of Postal Workers were in full blast after they were locked-out last week. and there are Filipino employees who joined the picket line while waiting for the final negotiation between C.U.P.W. and the Canada Post. The Filipino Journal was able to meet some of the union
members and heard some of the demands of their union. While having a needed break, the four employees, Catalina Mosionier, Jhojho and Lorna Onio and Amy Blanco shared their positive attitude that the strike would be over soon but they voiced out that the union is against the plan to end the strike by legislation. They wanted negotiation. As Catalina mentioned that the Canada Post
employees are over-paid is not true. And they are fighting for sick leave, letter carriers safety, pensions and most of all job securities. After a short respite, the four joined the throngs of postal employees to the picket line where they joined other union members and by observation, there many Filipinos who are out to join the walk around the downtown postal office.

he bidding for the privatization of the operation and maintenance of Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1 and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 and the contract to design and build the LRT-MRT Common Station in Quezon City has been suspended by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC). DoTC technical working group on railway projects chairman Lawyer Hernando Cabrera said the special bids and awards committee decided to suspend the bidding of the two public-private partnership projects in
view of the change in leadership in the DoTC.. Cabrera said they received a letter from Congress urging the DoTC to let incoming Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II to review the contracts. Roxas will assume office on July 1. The P15-billion contract involves the operation and maintenance of LRT 1 and MRT 3 for four years, and the P1.5-billion contract to construct the LRT-MRT Common Station in a year, So far 10 contractors have expressed their interests to bid for

Bid documents worth P150,000 are available to the contractors until August 17, a day before the deadline of submission of bids set on August 18. Prior to the resignation of DoTC Secretary Jose “Ping” de Jesus, the deadline of submission of bids is set on July 11. Maria Aragon now an international product endorser
T
he young Fil-Canadian singer whose video reached 28 million views in six weeks on the YouTube video-sharing site, is now part of a mobile phone commercial being shown abroad. Ten-year old Maria Aragon appears on an HTC commercial that makes references to popular social network websites such as Twitter and Foursquare. The commercial quips such catchy phrases as “You are the next Trending Topic” and the “You are the next mayor of this bar.” Maria got to play the keyboards once again while singing the lines “When I get older / I will be stronger” from the song “Wavin’ Flag” by K’Naan as the statement, “You are the next sensation,” is said on the commercial. The advertisement also endorses the California-based “Surfrider Foundation USA”, a non-profit
environmental organization that works to protect and preserve the world’s oceans, waves, and focuses on works sustaining marine and coastal ecosystems. Aragon caught the netizens’ attention last February when she
shared a video of herself singing a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” Overwhelmed by the girl’s performance, Lady Gaga included Aragon in her concert at the Air Canada Centre last March 3.
Pinoy ace dancers make it to US dance-reality show
F
il-Ams Tadd Gadduang and Marko Germar whose respective parents are both pure Filipinos, recently made it to the top 20 of the American hit dance-reality show “So You Think You Can Dance Season 8.” San Francisco-born Gadduang, who excels as a hip-hop dancer, said his elder sister taught him how to dance. He has appealed to his fellow Filipinos’ support here and abroad through their votes. Germar for his part said it’s a dream come true for a kid who just wanted to dance and have fun. His dance number with partner Melanie Moore was among the best during the first day of the competition. The two Pinoy ace dancers hope to inspire young Filipinos by creating an impression abroad through their world-class dancing abilities.

Charice takes criticisms with a ‘grain of salt’
T
he Filipino pride in the international music scene is currently getting a lot of bashing courtesy of cyber-bullies at the social networking site Facebook and micro-blogging site Twitter. Charice who performed an original song on the season finale of the hit musical show “Glee,” admitted she was hurt by the unsympathetic comments of some people to the
point that she decided to delete her personal account on Facebook. The young singer also turned to Twitter to express her disappointment on the negative things being said about her. She advised victims of cyber bullying to look at the situation in another way and to be always strong since negative comments are mere words coming out of other people
who are actually talking about themselves. Meanwhile, Charice also expressed her wish to reprise her character Sunshine Corazon in “Glee” Season 3. She said her reasons for wanting to be part again of the popular TV show were the great experience and the friendships she has made with the show’s cast.

Go Jets Go! Winnipeg NHL team still nameless
T
he name of the new NHL team in Winnipeg is still up in the air. There have been a multitude of names suggested for the incoming Atlanta Thrashers so we decided to take a crack at designing a new logo. There have been logo and name contests along with a trademark reservation for the name, “Whiteout”. Other names that have been tossed around are the Polar Bears, Falcons or maybe the Winnpeg Pooh Bears. We can tell you that 100% Filipino Journal will not be the new name of the Winnipeg hockey club. Regardless of what True North Sports & Entertainment call the new hockey team, the entire community in Manitoba will support them.
Our first thought at recreating a Filipino-esque hockey logo started with the Winnipeg Jets logo. It started with the J in the Jets that represented a hockey stick. Quite easily, that would be the J in the Journal hockey logo. After a couple early ideas, the circle around the Winnipeg Jets logo wasn’t looking quite right based on the length of the word, “JOURNAL”. We threw out the circle and replaced it with the shape of a hockey rink, adapted from the Vancouver Canucks stick & rink logo. After a few more revisions, adding, moving and scaling other elements in the design including the sun and stars from the Philippine flag, we came up with the Filipino Journal hockey logo.

World chess body awards GM title to Sadorra

Why details can make or break a permanent resident visa
I
n all applications for permanent residency, applicants must be truthful. If an applicant is not truthful, he or she can be found to have made a “misrepresentation”. This can lead to the refusal of a Permanent Residency Visa. Often times, people leave gaps in their employment or address history. Applicants sometimes forget to list an employer or address from years ago. While many immigration officers will allow individuals to correct these errors, errors can be found to be misrepresentations which can result not only in a visa being refused but a person being barred from applying to Canada for some time. Can incorrect information in my address history really result in a refused visa? In a recent Court case, an applicant changed his address history from what he stated in a previous application. When asked about the differences, the applicant indicated that the changes were as a result of problems with interpretation.
The immigration officer did not believe the explanation and stated that the applicant was responsible for the accuracy of the information. The officer also pointed out that the applicant signed a declaration that the old application was truthful, complete and correct. Because the applicant made no statement at the time of his immigration interview that there were errors in the old application, the officer found that he misrepresented his addresses. When this matter went to court, the judge agreed that this was a misrepresentation. Can incorrect information in my employment history really result in a refused visa? In the same case, the officer also found that the applicant misrepresented his employment history. In the application, a different occupation was claimed than was later disclosed. The applicant could not provide supporting evidence of his occupation and the officer found that there was a misrepresentation in the employment history. The judge agreed.

Dr. Jose Rizal - the first Filipino TNT in America? by: Rodel Rodis

f U.S. immigration authorities were as strict in 1888 - when Dr. Jose Rizal visited the US as a tourist - as they are now, the Philippine national hero, whose 150th birth anniversary we celebrate this week, could have faced deportation for an immigration violation. When Dr. Rizal reached the port of San Francisco on April 28, 1888, after a 15 day journey from Yokohama on board the Belgic, he was placed in quarantine for 6 days, along with all the Asians on board, while Caucasians were allowed to freely disembark. This experience with racism had a profound impact on Rizal as he later described in a letter to Mariano Ponce in July of 1888: “They placed us under quarantine, in spite of the clearance given by the American Consul, of not having had a single case of illness aboard, and of the telegram of the governor of Hong Kong declaring that port free from epidemic. We were quarantined because there were on board 800 Chinese and, as elections were being held in San Francisco, the government wanted to boast that it was taking strict measures against the Chinese to win votes and the people’s sympathy. We were informed of the quarantine verbally, without specific duration. However, on the same day of our arrival, they unloaded 700 bales of silk without fumigating them; the ship’s doctor went ashore; many customs employees and an American doctor from the hospital for cholera victims came on board.” Rizal would not likely be a victim of racial profiling now as San Francisco and Oakland both have Chinese American mayors (Ed Lee and Jean Quan) while next door neighbor Daly City even has a Filipino American mayor (Mike Guingona).
But Rizal might have been detained for a violation that could have made him the first Filipino TNT (slang for “illegal alien”) in America- he entered the US under an assumed name. When Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna, his birth certificate showed his name as “Jose Protacio Mercado y Realonda”, the son of Francisco Mercado y Alejandro and Teodora Realonda y Quintos. That was the name he used until he enrolled at the Ateneo de Manila in 1872. In 1872, the Spanish authorities cracked down on the secularization movement of native priests who were insisting on the right to preferential assignment in parishes over that of newly arrived Spanish friars. The leaders of this movement led by Fr. Jose Burgos were rounded up and executed by garrote. Rizal’s older brother, Paciano Mercado, was an associate of Fr. Burgos, and was also being hunted down. Fearing that family surname association with him would prevent Rizal from being accepted at the prestigious Ateneo, Paciano obtained a false birth certificate that allowed Jose Mercado y Realonda to enroll at the Ateneo as “Jose Protacio Rizal”. “Rizal” was picked because it was the name (originally “Ricial” for “greenfields”), which his father adopted at one point until confusion in business transactions compelled him to return back to “Mercado” (Spanish for “market”), the surname his great grandfather, Domingo Lam Co, originally used after immigrating to the Philippines from Jinjiang, Quanzhou in the mid-17th century. Changing surnames was not easy for the young Rizal who complained in a letter to a friend that the use of this assumed name was “giving me
the appearance of an illegitimate child!” Ironically, after Rizal acquired notoriety as the author of Noli Mi Tangere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Subversive), the entire Mercado family defiantly changed their surname to Rizal in 1891. Despite entering the U.S. under an assumed name in 1888, Rizal had no problems with the authorities in the 10 days he spent traveling from San Francisco to New York City by transcontinental railroad. Along the way, Rizal passed through Sacramento, Reno, Ogden, Denver, Farmington, Salt Lake City, Provo, before going through Nebraska to Chicago on the way to Albany, New York, and then traveling along the bank of the Hudson River to Manhattan. “I visited the largest cities of America with their big buildings, electric lights, and magnificent conceptions,” Rizal wrote Ponce in 1888. “Undoubtedly America is a great country, but it still has many defects. There is no real civil liberty. In some states, the Negro cannot marry a white woman, nor a Negress a white man. Because of their hatred for the Chinese, other Asiatics, like the Japanese, being confused with them, are likewise disliked by the ignorant Americans. The Customs are excessively strict. However, as they say rightly, America offers a home too for the poor who like to work.” Little did Rizal know that less than just two decades later, from 1906 to 1925, more than 125,000 poor Filipino sacada workers would be brought to the US to labor in the farm fields of Hawaii and California. Rizal may have had a premonition of this neo-colonial future because two years after his US visit, Rizal
wrote “The Philippines: A Century Hence” where he explained why none of the European powers as well as a China and Japan would be interested in colonizing the Philippines once Filipinos declared their independence. The only possible foreign power who may be interested in acquiring the Philippines? “Perhaps the great American Republic, whose interests lie in the Pacific,… may some day dream of foreign possession.” In the course of his storied life, Rizal traveled the length and breadth of the United States, Europe and Asia but the Philippines always remained

As he reflected in a letter to Fray Pastells in 1895, “It is very possible that that there are causes better than those I have embraced, but my cause is good and that is enough for me. Other causes will undoubtedly bring more profit, more renown, more honors, more glories, but the bamboo, in growing on this soil, comes to sustain nipa huts and not the heavy weights of European edifices.” Happy 150th birthday, Jose Protacio Mercado y Realonda, alias “Dr. Jose Rizal”.

The Weigh In by Big Marv @BigMarvShow
Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Semifinals
S
aturday, June 18, the opening round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix concluded and only four fighters remain. Now that Strikeforce is owned by the UFC’s parent company, it seems more and more likely, that winner of this tournament will fight the reigning UFC heavyweight champion to see who is the world’s undisputed, number one heavyweight mixed martial artist. On Saturday, Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, Alistair Overeem beat a man who he previously lost too. Fabricio Werdum submitted Overeem by kimura back in 2006 and in his last fight, he tapped out Fedor Emelianenko via triangle in 69 seconds. It was a fight no one thought he had a chance in winning. Against Overeem, his game plan of dropping to guard and hoping the champ would follow him down was poor at best. It lead to a lack luster decision win for Alistair Overeem. The other Grand Prix fight saw the always controversial former UFC Champion Josh Barnett outclass and dominate former Strikeforce challenger, Brett Rogers, winning via side choke in the second round. In the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, Josh Barnett will face Sergi Kharitonov and Alistair Overeem will face the second man to beat
Emelianenko, Antonio Silva. No date nor venue has been booked as of yet, though there are rumors of a fight card this fall in San Francisco. My predictions are that Silva, who was vocal about being unimpressed by Overeem, will underestimate his opponent leading to a KO win for the Strikeforce Champion. Josh Barnett will outwrestle Kharitonov and the final fight of the Grand Prix will be Alistair Overeem versus Josh Barnett. Then I’ll pick Overeem to win it all. However, after Overeem’s less-than-stellar performance, I can’t see him getting past the two men at the top of UFC’s Heavyweight Division. Champion, Cain Velasquez will outwork and out wrestle him. If Junior Dos Santos is the champion, then I have no doubt he’ll out strike Overeem. Werdum got the better of some exchanges, only his punches didn’t have any power. Dos Santos’ punching power and speed will be too much. Now it’s not a lock that the winner of the tournament will face the current UFC champion when it’s all said and done, but it really should happen since the current Strikeforce Welterweight Champion, Nick Diaz will face UFC’s champ, GSP. It’s the only way to determine who is the undisputed champion in each division.
