City of Winnipeg Flag Raising Ceremony Kicks Off Philippine Heritage Week

ilipinos in Winnipeg celebrated their history, culture and liberty during two flag raising ceremonies - one at City Hall and the other at the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba. The City of Winnipeg commemorated the start of Philippine Heritage Week during a flag raising ceremony at Winnipeg City Hall on Friday, June 8th. Mayor Sam Katz along with City of Winnipeg councillors and Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba members were on hand during the ceremonies as the Philippine national flag was raised above City Hall along Main Street. The recognition included a short address by Mayor Sam Katz that highlighted the contribution Filipinos have made in Winnipeg. As the population of Filipinos in
Winnipeg grows, Mayor Katz hinted at the long term potential of Winnipeg to elect a mayor of Filipino descent. The community flag raising and kick-off celebration was held at the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba on Saturday, June 9th which was well attended by over 25 community groups and 100's of community memebers. continued on page 16

For Only when One Is Honest with Oneself Would (On Dealing with Feelings of Ambivalence through Poetry)
O
ne of the reasons I immigrated to Canada in 2003 was to take care of my late maternal grandfather. I spent almost three years as his live-in caregiver. It was a tough time; but in retrospect, I gained much in the process in terms of becoming a stronger and more courageous person and a more proficient and prolific writer. Despite all that, I never deny that our relationship for the most part was a bittersweet one. I always found myself in a dilemma and my feelings for him had become ambivalent. There were moments when I was sad because I knew that his death was
coming; but there were also moments when I was secretly wishing for his death to come sooner, so I could finally be relieved of such a difficult task of caring for him. That’s the truth. Within me sprang a well of opposing emotions… dilemma… antithesis... oxymoron. Such bittersweetness! However, beneath all that was honesty, which is therapeutic when a person is dealing with a mix of negative and positive emotions. Grandpa died on July 8, 2006. He was 91. The experience of having been with him in the last three years of his life until his death continues to

ernando Dalayoan has always been an active member in the Filipino community. Whether it was dancing for Magdaragat, or getting involved with the University of Manitoba Filipino Students’ Association, he’s managed to stay deeply rooted to his culture. Now, Dalayoan is giving back through a less conventional avenue – film. This year, the filmmaker and founder of Blue Water Buffalo Productions released his first ever documentary Manila Road, which is now available for viewing on MTS Video On Demand. “Manila Road celebrates the Filipino community and its brief history,” says Dalayoan. “It also reflects my take on why a lot of Filipinos stay in Winnipeg – the two
main factors – family and kababayan. Kababayan is like brotherhood and friendships.” Dalayoan focused his film on the business, educational and social aspects of the Filipino community. Some of his interviewees include Jon Reyes (President of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council), Darlyne Bautista (School Trustee) and Mike Pagtakhan (Winnipeg City Councillor for Point Douglas). “I wanted to interview more people,” says Dalayoan. “But because of the timeframe, I wasn’t able to get it all in. Jon Reyes was very generous of presenting his point of view about the businesses in the community, and it’s thriving. There’s also kids I interviewed about

Magdaragat, at least 12 of them, but sadly I had to cut 10.” It was not difficult for Dalayoan to find people to talk to since his mother has many resources. She interviewed pioneers for a book she co-wrote on the first Filipino immigrants in Manitoba, and is the president of MAFTI (the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers). Dalayoan is a member of the same organization, teaching grade six students at Lord Nelson School. In fact, his students ushered the Manila Road screening event held at the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba on April 28, 2012. Over 150 attended the documentary’s debut, and all the contributions collected from the night were donated to the Lord Nelson camp fund. Dalayoan is currently working on finishing his trilogy based on the

beginning, middle and end of the Filipino-Canadian experience. The three year project includes his current short films Tutulungan Kita (I’ll Help You) and Young Ligaw, both which have been featured in national and international film festivals. He is in the process of collecting grants to complete his third film, describing the end of the Filipino experience. Although Dalayoan helps put Filipinos on map in the arts community, he hardly sees himself as someone to look up to. “I don’t consider myself a role-model or pioneer. Pacquiao cheated of victory
T
he loss of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao to Timothy Bradley would most likely become one of the most controversial fights in boxing history and could become the catalyst for reforms in the way fights are judged. These are the facts: The round-by-round Lederman Card showed Pacquiao winning, a total of 119 over Bradley’s 109. Lederman gave Round 10 to Bradley and the rest to Pacquiao. The Final Punch Statistics showed Pacquiao landed 190 punches out of 493 punches thrown while Bradley landed 108 out of 390 punches thrown. There were no knockouts. However, two of the judges saw it differently. While Judge Jerry Roth scored the fight 115-

113 for Pacquiao, judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford scored it 115-113 for Bradley, which gave Bradley a split decision victory over Pacquiao.
“Bradley came on strong in the later rounds, winning five of the last six rounds on two scorecards and four on the third. He won 115-113 on two scorecards, while losing on the third by the same margin.” But still, AP had Pacquiao winning 117-111. Just about everybody who scored the fight gave it to Pacquiao. But judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford gave it to Bradley. What made them see it differently? This question would in the forefront of debate for a long time. Sad to say, what happened could erode the confidence and enthusiasm of boxing aficionados who were drawn into a sport that experienced a Renaissance since Pacquaio entered the ring with his spectacular performance in the past seven years.
What the hell happened? The fight was lopsidedly in favor of Pacquiao from start to finish except in Round 10, yet the two judges decided to give it to Bradley. For those who watched the fight, most of you would agree that Pacquiao should have won the fight by unanimous decision. I hope not, because if it did, then boxing would once again slide into the bowels of disrepute and perhaps never to emerge again in a respectable milieu of sportsmanship and entertainment. “Paper champion” It’s interesting to note that when promoter Bob Arum -who handles both Pacquiao and Bradley -- went over to Bradley before the controversial decision was announced, Bradley told him: “I tried hard but I couldn't beat the guy.” This led Arum to say that Bradley -- the new “paper champion” -- didn’t even feel he earned it. Could there be a worse insult than being called a “paper champion” by no less than his own promoter? Indeed, for someone who had been promoting boxing all his life, Arum saw the handwriting on the wall. Ominously, he said: “Something like this is so
outlandish, it’s a death knell for the sport.” Rematch But death knell or not, Arum would immensely benefit from a rematch, which was agreed upon in the contract between Pacquiao and Bradley. “I have both guys, and I’ll make a lot of money in the rematch, but it’s ridiculous,” Arum said. He accused the judges of incompetence saying, “they don’t know what the hell they’re looking at. Nobody who knows anything about boxing could have Bradley ahead in the fight.” The question is: Would Pacquiao agree to a rematch to regain his title and earn another $20 million or would he call it quits? A rematch would be very enticing and hard to refuse. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pacquiao agreed to a rematch. But to the every end, Pacquiao proved himself to be who he really is: a great boxer who knows himself better than anybody else. “I did my best,” he said. “I guess my best wasn't good enough.” However, the Pacquiao-Bradley fight proved one thing: “If you can’t beat your opponent with punches, beat him in the judges’ score cards.” And Bradley did. At the end of the day, it can be said that Pacquiao won the fight but the judges cheated him of victory.

Manny Pacquiao and Jessica Sanchez: two ambassadors who have brought pride and international recognitions to the Filipinos! Manny Pacquiao lost to Timothy Bradley by a split decision!
T
he negative reactions became ballistic and swift when Manny Pacquiao lost to Timothy Bradley in the recently boxing bout for welterweight championship at MGM Last Vegas. From the internet facebook, twitter and other internet chatterboxes, to the newspaper columnists and radio commentators, and to the people and boxing fans in pubs, bars, on the streets and homes, the comments and analysis have becomeso viral, so instant, and so negative after Manny Pacquiao "a.k.a. Pacman" an international boxing champion lost to Timothy Bradley, the challenger. The fans of Pacquiao, especially, his kababayans did not accept the verdict meted by the three judges who according to the multitude of people, the judges acted on an alleged "mafia machination". In reality, the whole boxing afficionado claimed that the final decision was tainted. "We were robbed!", "We were cheated!" "Those judges were gay! and reacted on what Manny Pacquiao's minsinterpreted comments on gays and lesbians. Or the judges were allegedly paid to

make this kind of decision against Pacquiao. And even Paquiao himself, after the bout, he said: "I knew that I am the winner, but we have to respect the decision of the judges." At the beginning of the post-bout interview, Manny Pacquiao said with a thrifty smile: "This is why we love boxing." At MGM, after announcing that Timothy Bradley was the winner, his wife, was surprisingly jubilant as she hugged some of her loved ones. It was a reaction of an unexpected result! And on the other side, Jinky was so quiet, not sobbing, just her face was looking at a blankspace. And on the ring, the manager, the trainer, the "sidekicks" of Timothy Bradley were all celebrating to the surprised announcement. And from the audience, a bombastic booo dominated the air. And the fans of Manny Pacquiao had become frustrated and had reacted negatively to the result of the 12-round fight. Losing to Timothy Bradley seems to be next to impossible. Our icon boxer is winnable as shown by many fights he had for many years since 2005. Never been defeated. And the international media and aficionados had branded him as the only boxer who has the speed of pound by pound style on the right.
He became the best ambassador of the Philippines. He is so simple. So happy-go-lucky. And has become the role model of the young Filipinos to have a big dream. He had become an international sensation; and thus, monetary wise, he has become of the one wealthiest Filipino in the Philippines; and one of the wealthiest sportsman in the world. Pacquiao can stand side by side by multimillionaires sports icon like Tiger Wood and Michael Jordan. Added to this, he is politician. As he finally concluded in his post-bout interview: "I have to thank God for the strength he gave me; and for the supports of the fans, and to the media who are responsible to put my name on top of the boxing world." With this losing to Timothy Bradley some boxing sport writers and followers would speculate: "Is this the sign of Manny Pacquiao's retiring from boxing?" At the conference after the fight, Manny Pacquiao was still relax and with that "matipid" smile. "We will have a rematch." And even Timothy Bradley said: "Yes, the rematch is final. It will be on November 10, this year at MGM, Las Vegas. And thus, the excitements for a rematch continue to surge; and the money continues to pour.

And the negative reactions of our kababayan are also swift and terse: "Mind you, no Filipino will ever win in this white dominated singing contest, kaya kung ako, hindi na ako sasali. Mapu-frustrate ka lang?"

Is this true? Filipinos, almost entirely, praised the exemplary singing talent of Jessica Sanchez, half Pinoy/ half Mexican. Every episode of the American Idol millions of fans had all the positive comments on her. Even President Noynoy Aquino has so much interest when he met her; and so many Philippine managers have already plans for her concerts in Manila. And in one night of elimination, Jessica Sanchez was one of the 3 at the bottom; but thru the intervention of the judges, like Jennifer Lopez, Jessica was saved for the elimination. And this added to the strength of Jessica Sanchez, as aided by Tyler, that Jessica would be the winner for this year's American Idol. But it did not happen. And on the finale of the American Idol, Phillips Phillips was declared winner! The American Idol winner for 2012! And Jessica Sanchez landed as a runnerup! And Jessica Sanchez followed the footstep of Mia Tegia and Jasmine Trias, who did the best to capture the title but it did not materialize. And thus, the claim that no Filipino singer would win, is just a comment of frustration. Again, to lose in this international singing contest, is not acceptable to our kababayan. We would our "manok" to be the winner. How do you equate the losing streaks of our talented kababayans in the two international events to our attitude of not accepting the verdict? In our every day life, we do face many challenges and trials. Some had resulted to a success; but others had succumbed to a total failure. We are living in a world of many chances or even, we have to resort to the "pustahan" challenge. "Why do you react so negatively on the Pacquiao's lost?" Our kababayan answered: " If you were watching the match, you would
see that Pacquiao got most of the rounds. He was the world renown pound by pound boxer and he did what the people were expecting for him to win...and then, he lost? "Pacquiao was cheated, Filipinos were cheated." And why do you react on Jessica's lost? "Jessica is Filipino, hindi siya mananalo! Walang Pinoy na mananalo sa American Idol!, oh, magpustahan tayo." It is a natural reaction to this losing game. We do associate ourselves to the trials and challenges of our kababayans. Whenever there is a kababayan who has reached a pinnacle of success, it has become our mantra! For us, the successes of Pacquiao and Jessica are also successes of the Filipinos in the Philippines and in the whole world. With the success of our two kababayans, we are elevated to a certain degree of pride and international recognition...and it is too natural to make such negative reactions. With these two well-known celebrities in sports and in entertainment, their active participations serve as our inspiration. We have to be driven with ambitions. Wika nga, dream big! And we Filipinos have all the opportunities to shine, be it in a beauty contest (Pinoy's obsession), or in a singing contest, or in billiard or pool; and in boxing! And you had noticed, both Manny Pacquiao and Jessica Sanchez had the sweet smiles of success in spite of the unexpected results. Losing is a part of a game. And winning is an ultimate gift. Yes, kababayans, there are pots of gold at the end of the rainbow!

ecause I was not in the mood for a discourse—besides, the workplace especially during work hours is not an appropriate venue for such a discourse on delicate and controversial issues like atheism and world economy, I did not react to her claim that the increasing number of atheists is reason the world is continuously deteriorating morally. I made sure that I did not show any sign of agreement either. In short, by
not responding, I was able to drop the conversation right away. If we were at a plaza in the time of classical philosophers like Plato, I would have certainly took my turn to utter my logical piece. However, a break time of 30 minutes is obviously insufficient for hammering issues like that. I thought to myself, Hmm, I’ll just write an article about it in my literary column in the newspaper one day.

They arrogantly claim that the world is being saved from disgrace and human follies by religious and Godbelieving people such as themselves. I strong disagree! I am not claiming that all atheists are good and responsible individuals; and in the same manner that I certainly disagree that all religious people are automatically good and kind. In fact, if one is to open her eyes—she might be shocked to learn and realize that a big percentage of wars, crimes against humanity, discrimination, bigotry, and evil deeds in the world are instigated by people because of religion or their blind faith in their respective gods. How many religious people claim that their religion is the only single correct path to righteousness, failing to acknowledge the existence of a diversity of religious beliefs? I’m just saying that there are many atheists who lead lives that are more admirable than those of many believers. I am not claiming that to be religious or to believe in a god is wrong or that all religious people are bigots. All I am saying is that a person can have the ability to be good and avoid evil with or without a belief in a god. Having a religion or a belief in a god is not an assurance of an individual’s being compassionate and responsible. There are good atheists as well as there are good religious people; in the same manner that there are evil atheists as well as there are evil god-believers. DOLE expects increase demand for food and beverage workers
T
he Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE said the demand for Filipino food and beverage(F&B) workers will step up spurred by increases in population, household income, and leisure time that will allow people to dine out and take vacations more often. DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, in a statement, said students who were not able to enroll in tertiary education but who want to get employment fast might consider looking into the F&B courses. These courses are available in many technicalvocational schools in the country that offer trainings for waiters and waitresses, baristas, bartenders, cooks, and kitchen helpers. Baldoz added that it takes only a few weeks or months to gain the appropriate skills
required in some of the highpaying careers in the labor market such as food and beverage. She also said those who seek career advancement in the F&B industry should opt to further their skills in communication, orientation to teamwork, customer service skills, and ability to multi-task, flexibility, and creativity. The current entry level monthly salary for F&B workers ranges from R8,000 to R15,000. Those who are in supervisory level positions may even get salary of up to R20,000. In other countries like in the US, hourly compensation ranges from $3.51 to $7.65. An F&B front liner may even get other benefits or incentives such as allowances, bonuses, overtime pay, and customer service tips.

Pacquiao Robbed
O
n Saturday, June 9, I watched the Pacquiao - Bradley WBO Welterweight Championship fight on pay-per-view with a bunch of Filipino friends. The fight took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with a most disheartening conclusion. No, Manny Pacquiao did not lose the fight. He was robbed blind by two of the three judges. Judges Duane Ford and C. J. Ross voted 115113 for Tim Bradley. The other voted by the same score for Manny. HBO’s Harold Lederman had Manny winning 11 out of 12 rounds. As Lederman posted his score round after round, up to 90 – 81, we were saying that Bradley’s only hope was a knock-out of Manny, which did not happen as Manny won two more of the last three rounds. Even fight analysts including Jim Lampley and E. Stewart were incredulous. Promoter Bob Arum probably suffered a minor apoplexy as he expressed his disbelief. Arum, who promotes both fighters, said that the decision was ridiculous and everyone should be ashamed of it. According to ESPN, Arum said, "Something like this is so outlandish, it's a death knell for the sport. This is f------ nuts. I have both guys, and I'll make a lot of money in the rematch, but it's ridiculous. You have these old
f---- who don't know what the hell they're looking at. It's incompetence. Nobody who knows anything about boxing could have Bradley ahead in the fight." Arum also claimed Bradley himself thought he lost: "I went over to Bradley before the decision and he said, 'I tried hard but I couldn't beat the guy.'" During and at the end of the fight, the Compubox showed the number of punches and power punches thrown by each boxer as well as the number that connected. Statistics therefore showed that Manny thoroughly out-boxed Bradley, not marginally but by a big edge (253 punches for Manny to 159 for Bradley). It is very difficult to understand where Ford and Ross based their scores. There were no knock-downs although a few times, Bradley was a bit unsteady after being hit by Manny. Indeed, most of the replays during the fight showed Manny hitting Bradley. But these occurred towards the ends of the rounds. So Manny wasn’t able to follow through and finish Bradley off. The decision was booed by the audience. Unfortunately, the judges have the final say and Manny Pacquiao’s streak of fifteen wins has to come to end. Many reasons were advanced for this turn of events.

PH to buy military equipment from Italy
M
alacañang announced that the Philippine government will be soon buying military aircraft and equipment from Italy The deal was the result of the recent meeting between President Benigno S. Aquino III and an Italian delegation led by Defense Minister Giampaolo Di Paola. Malacañang added that the military agreement seeks to boost the modernization program of the Philippine armed forces as well as to forge strong defense cooperation between the two countries. Among the equipment being considered for procurement from Italian defense suppliers are medium lift aircraft, coast watch system radar, multi-role combat aircraft, and long-range patrol aircraft. Earlier, US President Barack Obama announced his government’s commitment to strengthen the Philippines’ defense system through a radar network center and an upgraded US coast guard cutter. The President was joined in the Malacañang meeting by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Jessie Dellosa.

Philippine Independence Day Celebration
The provincial proclamation of Philippine Heritage Week was presented by Hon. Christine Melnick, Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism. Philippine Heritage Week commemorates the 114th anniversary of Philippine Independence. The celebration kicked off a week-long series of events coordinated by the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM). The Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM), Inc. is a non-profit, cultural group comprised of representatives from over 35 member organizations
and individuals within the Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg. It works actively to commemorate and celebrate the Philippines' independence from centuries under Spanish colonial rule (June 12, 1898). Since its inception in 1963, it has branched its role further in the community from weeklong events during the month of June to now include yearround celebrations, events, and information sessions in support of heritage, multiculturalism, and positive acculturation.

Bomber Season Is Here!
The Filipino Journal takes on Blue Bomber Media Skills Challenge
T
he Filipino Journal was invited to take part in the Blue Bomber Media Skills challenge prior to opening of Blue Bomber training camp at Canad Inns Stadium. There were several challenges and over 12 media teams were put through the paces. How fast is your 40? The Blue Bombers put us to the test! Winnipeg Blue Bomber alumni, Lamar McGriggs smoked all of us and he was jogging. Lamar, fast. Winnipeg media, not so much. Our team had the most fun at three of the seven skills competitions: the running back drill, receiver catching drill and the team obstacle course. The linebacker, quarterback, kicking and snapping drills were great but not as hilarious to watch. In the running back drill, we were timed as we hit defenders on a short bump and run course towards the endzone. We have video of Buzz and Boomer stuffing us on the goal line. In the wide receiver drill, it was hillarious as we watched the
effort as we jumped, shuffled, tackled and flew over pylons, bags and tackle props. On the Filipino Journal media team, we had Kristin Macaraeg, Marlo Boux, Jon Reyes and myself. Our cheerleading team, consisting of Jackie Doming and Kristine Daaca also particpated in the skills challenge. The Filipino Journal is happy to announce that Filipino Nights is coming back for 2012. Our Filipino Nights 2012 launch is going to be on Thursday, June 28th at the Bomber Store. In other news, which you may have already heard, the Bombers will play all 2012 games at Canad Inns Stadium as construction delays at Investors Group Field have postponed its opening to the start of the 2013 season.

Dolphy was rushed to a hospital on June 9 due to difficulty in breathing which was aggravated by his chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The ailment is one of the most common lung diseases characterized by difficulty in breathing, and involves a longterm cough with mucus and Emphysema. The 84-year-old actor has been in and out of the hospital for some time now. He will be turning 85 on July 25.
Pacquiao to star in a Hollywood movie

ilipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is no stranger to making movies having appeared in several local films such as “Lisensyadong Kamao,” “Anak ng Kumander” and “Wapakman.” Now he is set to invade Hollywood via the action film “Brass Knuckles” which will start shooting next month in Los Angeles, California, USA. According to film producer Damian Perkins, they aim to wrap up post-production either August or September this year so they could release the movie next year. Perkins said the film’s plot deals with the use illegal drugs and the underworld populated by
mobsters and hooligans. Pacquiao will be playing the role of a gangster. The New Jersey-born producer also guaranteed that the Filipino boxing superstar got a good role as well as good lines.

MAC new office has formaly opened recently with a ribbon cutting and a blessing by a visiting priest from the Philippines. Customers and friends gathered to witness the official opening and blessing of the office and the big warehouse at 168 Wyatt Road at Mandalay Drive. 14-Day Panama Canal Scenic Cruising
O
n 27 March 2012, a beautiful day in Port Everglades Pier 2 Terminal, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, we checked-in at the Coral Princess for a 14-day cruise to experience the engineering marvel, the Panama Canal. After 2 days at sea the cruise ship docked at the first port of call in the southern Caribbean Sea, Oranjestad, the largest port and capital of Aruba. With its Dutch colonial architecture and cactusstrewn landscape, Aruba, "the happy island", has natural wonders - the natural and baby natural bridges, Arikok national park, Ayo and Casibari rock formations, butterfly and ostrich farms, and white sandy beaches notably the Eagle and Palm beaches. From Aruba it's only 382 nautical miles to the next port of
call, Cartagena, Colombia, the only South American state with coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. A vibrant city with magnificent skycrapers, Cartagena is a vivid reminder of Spanish colonial heritage quite similar to the Philippines. Points of interest include the UNESCO World Heritage Site old walled city (Las Murallas), San Felipe de Barajas Fortress built by the Spaniards during the 17th century, the famous Las Bovedas, and the Palacio de la Inquisicion museum depicting a history of misery and torture. The Panama Canal transit, the cruise highlight, occurs on a hot humid April Fool's day. We experienced the thrill of canal transit from the Atlantic Ocean side to the Pacific Ocean and the intricacy of the
locks system first hand as the Princess is lifted over 85 feet above sea level from one body of water to the next at the Gatun Locks on the Atlantic side towards the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores Locks on the Pacific side and then passing under the Panama's Bridge of the Americas and finally docking at Fuerte Amador, Panama. An engineering feat which took 10 years to construct and completed in 1914, the Panama Canal is 82 kms. long that connects the Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean saving 8,000 miles from a journey around the southern tip of South America, the Cape Horn. Cruise ships like the Coral Princess pays to the Panama Canal Authority over US$100,000 to pass through it. Fuerte Amador is the perfect jumping off point for exploring Panama City, the old and the new, where most of the residential streets have no names or may have three different names. Panama City has its archaeological ruins, narrow colonial streets, churches, and monuments that tell the story of its past. The last port of call is Puntarenas, the capital and largest city in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. We enjoyed a half-day
bus tour with a stopover at Esparza, a town that boasts a central park, plaza and church. We were greeted in style by the young local folk dancers wearing traditional costumes and enthralled us with lively dance performances.
June 5 - 20, 2012 Five straight days at sea from Puntarenas to Los Angeles, California is quite a long voyage which we didn't notice at all because we're occupied with the so many activities and entertainment shows onboard the ship.

Horoscope You’re likely to be focused on an idea or brainwave that you believe could do much to solve an issue that has perplexed you for too long. Unmaximized Resources by Adonis Fernandez
F
or someone who’s aware that resources for public schoolsin the Philippines are scarce rather than minimal, to claim that public schools in Manitobaare well-endowed with their educational resources is easy, considering the competitive salary for teachers and staffs, small class size, updated library resources, complete sports facilities, and updated electronic gadgets. All these are almost a complete opposite to what public schools in the Philippineshave.
To a large extent, it is difficult to understand why despite the schools’ being “well-endowed,” students generally perform poorly in Math, Science, and Reading (if based on the Pan-Canadian Assessment Program). It purely presents a gap between having good resources and having good performance of students. While the problem is precise, solutions can be variably complex and dynamic. Suffice it to say that students’ poor performance in Math, Science, and Reading cannot simply be about a change
1) Reform of student mindset. Students (at the very moment they start in school) must develop an “enlightened” understanding that education is a privilege that carries with it responsibility—that while the government (through citizens’ taxes) provides most of a student’s classroom needs, it is a student’s responsibility to perform well as a way “paying off” the government and the social community. Or, if education is to be looked at as a student’s right, then it should carry with it an obligation to perform well. 2) Re-examination of course content and classroom pedagogy. This is, of course, an easily perceived solution to students’ poor performance in Math, Science, and Reading. It would require an improved course content and improved teacher skills and method in teaching Math, Science, and Reading (as professors in Manitoba would recommend).
can start to explore the idea of putting up a Science and Math Schools where students’ concentration would be mostly on Science and Math. It is also at these schools where future scientists are to be trained. 4) Math, Science and Reading laboratories in schools. The government must secure that there are Math, Science and Reading laboratories in schools, and that these laboratories are far more equipped than the music room, art room, and gym. 5) Re-examination of French Immersion program. While inculcating French as a second or another language is culturally significant and/or may be professionally advantageous, speaking French should be a “means” for students to perform better in Math, Science, and Reading rather than an “end” itself. It should answer this question: Is the usage of French as a medium of instruction helping students perform better in all their subjects or it hinders?
6) Logic for High School students. While Logic is usually a university (elective) course, it would be best to have Logic in High School since Logic is more than an informative course, 3) Establishment of Science and it’s a cognitivelytransformative Math Schools. analytic thinking can help students do better in Math, Science, and Reading. 7) A culture of critical thinking. Students in high school must not only practice comprehension and analytic skills, they must start to learn the skill of critical thinking. Through critical thinking, students should be directed at challenging and improving an existing idea and/or belief. They should be able to answer this question: “What can I contribute to improve an existing idea or belief?” These key points may appear as grandstanding and too ideal, at first. An examined understanding would, however, lead to the conclusion that these key points are practical and attainable if programs in education can be framed to specifically integrate them whether on a short-term or long-term goal. And, of course, if the government and school divisions will be willing to make a dent. If this can be done, then we can perhaps look forward to Manitoba students’ outperforming Ontario students, or, at most, Singapore students in the world picture. If this cannot be done, then it would likewise be easy to claim that public schools in Manitoba have “unmaximized resources.”
DOTC announces P303M airport rehab project

he Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is inviting local and foreign firms to bid for the contract to construct, expand and improve the passenger and airport traffic handling capacity of seven provincial airports. The Php 303-million project involves airports in San Vicente in Palawan; Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur; Butuan City in Agusan del Norte; Dipolog City in Zamboanga del Norte; SangaSanga in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi; Cotabato City in Maguindanao; and Maasin in Southern Leyte. Through the project the government vows to improve the airports in these areas where
trade and tourism have been in an upswing for the past year. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the project is a part of the administration’s campaign to increase the tourism potential of the Philippines. ne of the pioneers and forerunners of British New Wave / Synthpop music, Ultravox is back after 18 years with an album of new materials. The 12-track Brilliant, the band's 11th album, was released in May 2012. Ultravox is currently comprised by its ’80s-era members—Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Chris Cross, and Warren Cann. Recommended earlier songs by Ultravox include “Hiroshima Mon Amour,” “Quiet Men,” “Reap the Wild Wind,” “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes,” “All Fall Down,” and “There Goes a Beautiful World.” Based on the new album's lead single, “Brilliant,” the Ultravox sound is unmistakable--slices of synth sounds and melodies on a platter of Postpunk angular guitars, dancing bass lines, and simple yet memorable drum patterns. That day, I wore my comfort clothes- a plain white shirt for my top, paired with my classic Levi’s jeans. I thought I could never grow out of such fashion style. Think of me when I was clad in plaid, and I had flip-flops on my feet. You told me before that I looked beautiful, with my black hair tied up to pony tail, face bare from make-up, and no huge accessories dangling on my ears. Look at me now. I am grown up. I can pull off pink top and purple pants with my nude pumps. I can wear a bondage dress with my red stilettos. My MAC cosmetics do an awesome job for a make up, far from the Johnson’s baby powder you handed to me when we were still together. I know now how to spot the authentic Chanel or Louis Vuitton purse from the knockoffs. And even if I carry a knock off purse, no one could tell that I am faking it. When my farm was dying and I couldn’t feed my family, you said that the grass is greener at the other side of the fence. When I worried about the future of my kids, you doused it by telling me that I can save up faster if I leave them. See, you were the one who pushed me away. I don’t really want to leave you. Had you not instilled in me that you are no good for me, I would have not turned for another refuge. Please know that you used to be the only refuge that I knew. Had you told me to stay, I would have. I would have become your artist, and not a white man’s caregiver. We could have painted the country more color. I, together with the people you shooed away, could have gathered our dreams and erase your disillusionment. You could have been a better Philippines. All you had to do was to make me believe that you are
my best place. How come you never uttered that? I despise you that moment when you failed to hold my hand, or show up in my dreams, or do some weird signs, just so I’ll keep my feet in your land. I waited for it, in vain. If you see me in stilettos, remember that I am just standing tall not because I am comfortable in these shoes but because I’ve been used now to the fear of stumbling. But if you would offer me flip-flops and take me to your blue coast, I might take your offer. I might as well not put on my MAC make-up and just dive in to your seawater I’ve been longing to bathe once again. I might give rebirth to my artistry, and make you the canvas of my beautiful piece. I do not mean to push you away, Juana. Long before you were born, I prepared my place for you. I thought, you would enjoy a good playground in your childhood,and a good community to settle in when you become
adult. I would like you to experience the mountains and the seas, and not just to look at them in post cards, and travelogues. But I guess I lost control of the decades after. I did not see it coming that people’s definition of leadership will change to praising popularity instead of integrity. I did not see it coming that people will eventually lose the sense of history. I fought hard for centuries just to prepare for your future, only to be in despair to see you leave me. It is ironic that after all this time, this battle is the most difficult to win. I do not know how to win you back, and those Filipinos who have been disheartened living in the country. When I fought for freedom and independence from the Spanish, Japanese, and American colonies, I thought that that was the climax of my history. I did not know that this could be worse. How do I teach you to love me again? Please know that it wasn’t me who pushed you away. Don’t you think it has something to do with our society? It has taught you to adore everything in the westmusic, movies, fashion, and what have you. What right do I have to deprive you of the freedom to know what’s in the other world? I would admit though, I did not see it coming that your fascination for the west would eventually outweigh your willingness to stay with me. Don’t you think it has something to do with our history? The 300-year Spanish occupancy has somehow taught your forefathers to become workers instead of becoming a boss. I would have loved to see you run the businesses in my country, and not the foreigners who don’t even have a clue what I went through
just to keep this country standing. Does it have something to do with my people? You voting the wrong person in the office, you not voting the right one or you not voting at all? I refuse to admit that it is my sole mistake. I don’t think I deserve all the blame and hatred you wrote in your letter. I don’t mind you wearing the designer clothes and purses if you do so because of your appreciation to Louis Vuitton or Coco Chanel. Just don’t do it because you want to prove that I fell short of giving you the good life. I am like any mother mourning for losing you, and like any mother, I still long for you to come back. If you must, I should let you know by now that it will give me hope for redemption. Maybe, I can stand on my knees now as I source out my strength from you. But if you choose not to, I will bow to your decision, even if it will hurt. There’s just one favor I ask from you, if in the west you find your place and one day someone will ask you about your country, please, don’t deny me. I wish you your happiness. Letty Antonio: OFSAM's Mother of the Year 2012

he Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba (OFSAM) celebrated the mother's day by recognizing Letty Antonio as the Mother of the Year 2012. The annual celebration was attended by other filipino seniors who had been awarded as mother of the year for many years. Invited guests were Larry and Tova Vickar of the Vickar Autogroup; MP Kevin Lamoureux and his wife Cathy, Rolly Bercasio, one of the founders, was able to join other seniors. Other included Rod E. Cantiveros, publisher of the Filipino Journal and the immediate past president of Asian Heritage Society of Mantioba; Julie Javier, governor of Batangas Association of Manitoba and committee chairman of Asian Festival at the Forks for Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba; former MLA Cris Aglugub; and
Aida Champagne, president of Filipino Seniors Group, together with senior dancers. Every former mother of the year awardee offered flowers to Letty Antonio, the secretary of OFSAM. Her husband, Florencio Antonio, OFSAM president, escorted his wife during the presentation, together with their children who offered flowers and gifts.

The 2012 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn 4x4 MegaCab

his truck is massive and it definitely turns heads in more ways than one. In the first day of driving the Ram 2500 through the streets of Winnipeg, pulling up next to other pickup drivers, I’d get the occasional glance and “the nod.” The nod basically affirmed the manliness of this powerful, bold and beautiful truck. Nods were more pronounced from other Ram truck owners so I affectionately referred to them as “Ram nods” on several instances on Twitter. In addition to the “Ram nods,” I also got “the look” on more than one occasion. Let’s just say that I’m not your stereotypical truck owner and wearing a suit and tie that day, made “the look” even more comical. As I smiled and waved back, the light turned green and I was on my way again. Basically, this truck was designed and built for cowboys. The look also established that this truck means business. Depending on what line of business you may be in, it’s built for heavy duty work, and heavy duty fun. The exquisite leather trim
in the Laramie Longhorn edition comes with soft premium leather highlighted by laser etched designs on the seats, glove box, and all across the front dashboard. The only thing missing is a hook to hang your cowboy hat. The front grill is bold and behind it, a 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel 6-speed automatic 350hp engine with a maximum towing capacity of 9,600lbs. This truck could literally move houses if it had to. The other engine option is a 5.7L V8 HEMI with an 8,800lbs towing capacity. City driving isn’t so kind to the Ram 2500. Parking the truck in a shopping mall lot takes patience and skill. Brandon Vera: redemption or exempition

012 has been a rough year for Joe Silva, the man responsible for match making in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. With injuries to top fighters occurring at almost a weekly basis, the UFC is constantly changing and scrambling their cards. Moving fights to different cards, finding worthy opponents for main events and trying to keep fight fans happy enough to keep ordering pay per view events is no easy task. However, though it all, there is one silver lining to the injury riddled year they are having, and that is the opportunity fighters are getting. Some up and comers are getting a chance to prove they belong at the top of their division. Such is the case for Renan Barao. A showdown between rivals and TUF coaches Urijah Faber and Dominic Cruz was to happen until Cruz injured his knee. Then Barao got the call to face Faber for the interim Bantam Weight championship. That fight will take place July 21st in Calgary.
On the other hand, opportunities are also given to fighters who are seemingly past their prime. One such competitor that fits this bill would be Filipino fighter, Brandon “The Truth” Vera. An injury to Thiago Silva, left an opening for a match with former Light Heavyweight Champion, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. After denying a fight with the very dangerous, yet relatively unknown, Glover Teixeria, Shogun agreed to face Vera in the main event for UFC on Fox 4, August 4. Brandon Vera made a huge splash when he first entered the UFC in 2005. As a heavyweight, he sliced through his completion. Noted as being one of the best Muay Thai kick boxers in all of MMA and combining that with slick jiu jitsu and a college background in Greco-Roman wrestling, Vera was a force to be reckoned with. Then contract disputes with his management and the UFC put him on the sidelines for over
a year. Once he returned, he was a shell of his former self. Two losses at heavyweight convinced Vera to move down to his natural weight and compete at 205 pounds. As a light heavyweight his record is 4-3 with one no contest. Wins have come as lack luster decisions, save for his destruction of Mike Patt. As for his losses; close decisions to Keith Jardine and legend Randy Couture as well as a first round TKO to current champion, Jon Jones. In Shogun Rua, Vera faces a man who is dangerous, yet just as inconsistent. Though when Rua is on his game, few men are able to stop him. The ever charismatic Filipino Fighter is sure to have his hands full, but this is still an opportunity to crack the top five in the UFC’s light heavy weight division. Brandon Vera has always had the tools to be one of the best in MMA, but will he make the most of his chance? Well have to wait until August 4 to find out the truth.
