Mr. Brown, Let Me Call the Attention of Whoever Edited Your Latest Book
(On the Grammatical Importance of Definite versus Indefinite Articles) The Dan Brown's "the gates of hell" metaphor has generated countless reactions and articles from not only fellow journalists but also bloggers and ordinary readers and spectators. Most of the reactions, however, delve on the subjective—whether it was offensive or not. To me, though, Brown obviously erred on the objective side—on the grammatical side, to be specific. He used the definite article 'the' instead of the indefinite article 'a.' In English grammar, 'the' pertains to specificity; therefore, to claim that a place is "the gates of hell" means that that place is definitely the one and only “gates of hell," nothing else, nowhere else. This makes the claim false, especially in a fictional or figurative sense, because Manila—in terms of traffic jams, pollution, prostitution, and heat--is not unique. These characteristics are apparent also in many other cities in the world,
in varying degrees of course; but nevertheless, if anything, Manila is just one of those hellish or horrible cities in terms of the conditions cited. In fact, according to Forbes. com, the "Five Dirtiest Cities in the World" are the following. Baku, Azerbaijan Dhaka, Bangladesh Antananarivo, Madagascar Port au Prince, Haiti Mexico City, Mexico Manila is not even on the Top 5 list. (Maybe this exclusion might offend some people. Imagine, Manila was left out!) Therefore, I still stand by my point of view as an editor that Brown erred in his use of the correct article adjective—he should have used “a gate of hell” instead of “the gates of hell” to qualify the fact that Manila is only one of several hellish or horrible cities in the world, whether fictional or not.
Let's get social
Although, Brown is not solely at fault. Remember, for books like that, there must be at least an editor who should have taken care of that. Final Note Such a trivial piece of detail to spend time on analyzing, psychologizing, and philosophizing, some might quip. However, if there would be no one to commentate on things like this, then who would? The world might then be much fuller with less intelligent or critical thinkers, which is also unfavorable for the sake of the progress of the human mind in general. Anyway, personally speaking and disregarding grammar, I don’t see any offense in Brown’s depiction of Manila, for that matter, simply because the descriptions that he wrote of Manila (or even the Philippines in general)—sad to say—had sparkling grains of truth to them. The moment we deny that the Philippines has no problems with traffic, garbage/waste management, and prostitution, the more the country would be unable to solve such problems. The logic? If there’s no problem, then no need for solutions. Then let the country continue to stink and rot with all those glaring truths. Afterwards, blame the delusional and onionskinned leaders and citizens of the greatest and most beautiful country in the whole wide world.

Local stocks continue upward trend
T
he recent depreciation of the peso was seen boosting local consumer spending and corporate profits as local stocks continue to rise at the 6,500 level. The main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index rebounded for the third session after a sharp pullback last week, adding 179.36 points or 2.83 percent to close at 6,518.77.
As investors wait for clues on how soon the US Federal Reserve Open Market Committee will start scaling back its liquidity-inducing bond buyback programs that have boosted global markets, trading across the Asian region was choppy. Gokongwei stocks URC (+8.18 percent) and JG Summit (+6.23 percent) were at the front of the stock surge while holding firms SM Investments, Ayala Corp. and DMCI
each rose more than 4 percent. AGI was likewise up 3.98 percent. BPI (+3.69 percent), ALI (+3.05 percent), SM Prime (+3.04 percent) and PLDT (+2.81 percent) also supported the PSEi’s rise.

Berberabe said the plan aims to possibly double the agency’s fund to P50 billion. She added that there was no problem with the employees’ part but it was the employers’ side as represented by the Employers Confederation of the Philippines Atty. Darlene Marie B. who opposed the increase in Berberabe, chief executive officer of contribution because it would cause the Home Development Mutual Fund additional burden on their part with otherwise known as Pag-IBIG Fund,
the implementation of the increased SSS and PhilHealth mandatory contributions. Berberabe said Pag-IBIG can expand its loans to real estate developers and individual housing loans with bigger funds. Highly Successful UFC 161 Proves Winnipeg’s Value Saturday, June 15, the Ultimate Fighting Championship held its very first event in Winnipeg. President, Dana White shared the record breaking numbers to kick off the post-fight press conference. Attendance was 14,754. More than any event held at the MTS Centre before and every bit as ruckus a crowd as a Winnipeg Jets home game. The live gate earned 3.15 million dollars, also more than any event held at the MTS Centre before. Winnipeg proved its value as a sports market and with numbers like this, the UFC is sure to return as it is lucrative for them, True North Sports and Entertainment as well as many businesses surrounding the MTS Centre and nightclubs who booked fighter appearances at after parties. That would make it sound like they had one successful evening here in our city, yet that is only part of the story. The UFC brought their team in for a week of events. A team that runs like a well-oiled machine. They kicked things off Wednesday at Portage Place with an open workout. Select fighters showcased their skills hitting pads and practising jiu jitsu. At one point, UFC Heavyweight, Pat Barry, squared off against former Bomber, Obby Khan, much to the delight of the large crowd gathered in Edmonton Court. That night, fighters including main eventer, Rashad Evans, visited a local boxing gym to workout with kids. Showing them the finer points of stand up. Thursday was media day, where reporters had the chance to speak one-on-one with select competitors from Saturday Night’s card. I also invited Pat Barry down for a Virgin Radio Live On Lombard. Probably one of the most entertaining LOL’s we’ve done. At the end, Barry took the time to pose for photos and sign autographs for the 30+ fans in attendance. Friday was a Q & A with TJ Grant, a Canadian lightweight set to take on champion Benson Henderson for the title in August. Following that was the official weigh ins. Then before the event, UFC held the UFC 161 Block Party in the parking lot of City Place. UFC went a long way in adding to the buzz this city had been feeling since they announced they were coming here. The card itself was a strong card made better by the loud audience. An audience that almost blew the roof off when Bruce Buffer announced that hometown fighter, Roland Delorme had won his fight. So
you can take the attendance and gate records and use them as examples of UFC 161’s success, or you can measure it by crowd noise. But the true measure of how successful UFC’s first foray into Winnipeg is via a tweet from UFC President Dana White halfway through the pay per view: “This arena is so loud already!!! Winnipeg is f---ing
AWESOME!!!!!!!! #UFC161 ” Here are the official results of UFC 161 Rashad Evans over Dan Henderson via split decision Stipe Miocic over Roy Nelson via unanimous decision Ryan Jimmo over Igor Prokrajac via unanimous decision Alexis Davis over Rosi Sexton via unanimous decision Shaw Jordan over Pat Barry via TKO round 1 Jake Shields over Tyron Woodley via split decision James Krause over Sam Stout via submission round 3 Sean Pierson over Kenny Robertson via majority decision Roland Delorme over Edwin Figueroa via unanimous decision Mitch Clarke over John Maguire via unanimous decision Yves Jabouin over Dustin Pague via split decision

their shoes. Driving the 2013 Toyota Prius V around for a week, I was well over 650 kms on a single tank of gas. At current gas prices hovering around $1.35 per litre, the Prius is extremely fuel efficient. Thanks to the Perimeter, I was really back where I started. I collected no fares, no tips and it was rather nice to see a clean and uncluttered vehicle. I've come to believe that manufacturers add the fancy graphics in hybrid vehicles to help improve fuel efficiency. Any time the "Low Fuel" warning light comes on, I almost treat it like a game of "How long can I go before I really need to fuel up?" As I dropped off one of my fares last week, the low fuel light came on. According to the car's display, I had approximately 20kms left in the tank and at least 18kms to my next destination. Game on! The Prius has a couple driving mode EV, Eco, Normal and Power. EV refers to "Electric Vehicle" mode and it was my attempt to drive the 18kms in EV mode for as long as possible without pissing off the drivers behind me. EV mode is activated during speeds under 40km/hr and only limited to distances just under 1.6kms. For
most of the trip except starting from red lights, I was cruising in Eco mode. By the time I reached my destination, the Prius was displaying that I still had 12kms before I ran out of gas. That's 8kms of gas consumption over an 18kms trip. Not bad and luckily, there was a gas station a block away. The Prius V is an extended hatchback wagon and offers quite a large cargo interior and capable of carrying at least one balikbayan box and carry-on luggage. One of the many reasons you'll see a Prius pull up when you call for
taxis at the airport. I recall fitting two balikbayan boxes, a set of golf clubs and all my carry-on bags on a trip to the Philippines last year. Lots of space! Under the hood, the Prius V has 1.8 Litre, 4-Cylinder, DOHC, VVT-i engine. The Hybrid Synergy Drive offers 134hp. The Prius V comes in four available trim levels starting out with the Base (starting from $27,425), Luxury (from $30,410), Touring ($33,445) and finally with the Touring + Technology package (from $37,120).

With an advance listing of applicants, the consular services have become much easier to follow the scheduled date and time. There is order and an atmosphere of cooperation and satisfaction. Headed by Orli Marcelino and with the help of many volunteers, the consular services have gone smoothly. Many kababayans are properly served and went home expecting that their
passports would be received in the later dates. The $5-dollar donation from the applicants would be used according to the information posted on the wall at the reception area. Vice-Consul Bolivar L. Bao, head of the Toronto Consular Outreach Program, explained to the dual citizen applicants the advantages of being both a Filipino and a Canadian citizen. After the information session, the thirteen kababayans took their oath before the Philippines Flag.

Becoming ”Economically Established” in Canada or How a provincial nominee application can be refused by the federal governmnet
E
very year a number of provincial nominee applications are refused because applicants are unable to prove they will become ”economically established” in Canada. Even after a provincial nominee certificate is approved, Citizenship Immigration Canada can refuse an application for this reason. Under the law Citizenship and Immigration Canada makes the final decision on permanent residencyand does not have to consider the same factors a province does. In the case of Daljit and Rupinder Sran, Mr. Sran, a citizen of India living in New Zealand applied to immigrate to Canada under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program. Mr. Sran was working as a store clerk in New Zealand, had high school education, a diploma in divinity, and was previously a farmer in India. His wife had a
Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from India and worked as a teacher in India for nearly 10 years. After moving to New Zealand, she obtained a diploma in horticulture and was working in that field. Mr. Sran’s parents lived in Calgary and his application was approved under Alberta’s Family Stream. Why was Mr. Sran’s application refused? The Srans application was refused because the visa officer did not believe that he would become “economically established” in Canada. The officer considered the Srans’ current jobs, work experience, education and training, and their motivations for moving to Canada. The officer also looked at their family in Canada and the language skills of Mr. Sran. In refusing the application, the officer found that Mr. Sran earned minimum wage as a store
clerk and evidence about his current employment was vague and inconsistent with his letter of reference. His divinity credential was determined to be of little use in Canada and his farming experience in India was found not to be transferable to Canada. The officer also found that he did not have the experience to run a business in Canada and that was not fluent in English. Does the support of relatives in Canada count for something? It is interesting the note that the officer did not address Mr. Sran’s parents’ willingness to support his family in Canada in great detail. However, since this case Citizenship and Immigration Canada issued a bulletin that says that it is unlikely that an applicant could qualify solely on the basis of their relatives’ financial support. As a result, a provincial nominee relying exclusively on the financial guarantee of relatives in Canada will have a harder time proving the ability to establish economically. What factors can be examined by a federal immigration officer beyond those already considered by the province? In the Sran case, the judge said that just because there is a provincial approval, federal visa officers do not have to approve the case. These officers do not have to consider the same criteria as the province and can substitute their own evaluation if they feel that the applicant’s nomination is not
All photos & articles available online!
a sufficient indicator of her or his ability to become economically established In Mr. Sran’s case, the immigration officer re-evaluated most of the factors Alberta assessed and discounted some of the factors that had persuaded Alberta that the family could settle in that province. How the factors are looked at by immigration officers? In Mr. Sran’s case, the key question was whether the immigration officer gave sufficient consideration to his wife’s credentials. In this case, the Federal Court found that the officer did not evaluate Mr. Sran’s spouse correctly. Since Mr. Sran’s wife had better educational and employment background than Mr. Sran with a great potential to enter the Canadian workforce in a reasonable time after their arrival, she should have been assessed on her own. As a result, the Srans won their case. What has happened since the Sran case? Since the Sran case, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has come out with further rules to assess “economic establishment”. Under these rules, visa officers can assess an applicant’s current job or job offer, language ability, work experience, and education and training. What this means is that visa officers can re-assess all of the work the province has done. As well, visa officers can assess the intention and ability

to enter the labour market. If a visa officer is not satisfied that the individual intends to enter the labour market, an application can be refused. Part-time or casual work which would not generate enough income to fully support the applicant may result in a refusal. Also, unlike in the Sran case, Citizenship Immigration Canada has now said that officers need to compare the Canadian requirements of the occupation with all of the information provided by the applicant. If the job qualifications do not match, applications can be refused. before you became aware of it. It becomes very obvious, very soon how impractical these schemes are. As a coincidence, a few short years later, while an auditor for Canada Revenue, I came across the detritus of this scheme in which dozens of people in the Winnipeg area lost thousands of dollars each at a time when the average wage was around $10,000. Network marketing is often similar in that there is a push to recruit individuals below you on the organization chart and you are to receive commissions from their sales. Sometimes you are required to make a certain volume of purchases personally, in addition to any sales. One example that I saw was each participant was required personally to purchase $200 per month of health food products in addition to building their organization. The difference from a pyramid scheme is there is also a push to sell the product to friends and others. If you have the time and resources you may succeed on the sales sides, but invariably the desired objective that is promoted is to recruit others to make the sales while you live off the resulting share of commissions. Now, I am sure some people must make lots of money, but despite having seen dozens of these schemes, I have never met these fortunate individuals. In one instance a client who entered a network marketing scheme pointed out that the owners of a very distinctive house near our home had made their money selling this product. As it happens, I knew the owners and they had never sold the product, but had obviously unknown to
Let's get social
them, been used in the sales pitch because of their apparent success. Another client had gone into a networking scheme, spent lots of money meeting people and trying to set up an organization over three provinces. It could be he wasn’t good at organizing although he had been a senior manager before retiring and it could have been bad luck or any of a dozen things but he finally gave up. I guess the thing to keep in mind is there is risk in any business scheme and success depends on hard work, planning and adequate resources. The thing that both pyramid selling and network marketing sell is a way to make to make money on the efforts of others. Also, always remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Before going into any scheme, signing up and investing money take the time to research the company and product, call the Better Business Bureau and your Provincial Consumer’s Bureau and check with a lawyer and accountant. or this edition and the next several I will review the numerous ways people pursue business activities. First, I will discuss pyramid selling and network marketing. Pyramid selling is illegal and network marketing, although legal, often bears many similarities to pyramid selling. My first encounter with pyramid selling happened shortly after high school when a friend told me about this great deal where we could earn lots of money. I would have to attend the meeting with him and he couldn’t tell me any more until we got there. I have learned that is the first way to spot a pyramid and many network schemes. They want to get you in the room for a hard sell and hopefully committed before you have a chance to get familiar with the business “opportunity”. As it happened, simple math revealed the futility of this particular scheme that I was introduced to those many years ago. Basically there aren’t enough people in the world to make it work as presented unless you get in at the very beginning and are the initial organizers. Essentially, these schemes relied heavily on building an organization of individuals from whom you would get a portion or commission on everyone you or those below you brought into the scheme. To see the fallacy of the plan just take a chessboard, put one penny on the first square and double it for each following squares - two pennies on the second square, four on the third, eight on the fourth and so on to represent the needed growth of the organization, realizing all the time that this organization has been going for some time

‘Blind auditions’ ensure fair selection of contestants in ‘The Voice’
T
he first season of “The Voice of the Philippines,” the reality television singing competition on ABS-CBN premiered last weekend showcasing a new concept that
differentiated it from other reality talent searches which airs in any known television stations. Serving as the four coaches and the judging panel of the show,
Bamboo Mañalac, Sarah Geronimo, Lea Salonga and apl.de.ap have their backs turned to the contestant when he or she goes onstage to sing. Known as the blind auditions, the coaches don’t judge the artists by their characteristics such as looks, personalities, stage presence or even dance moves, but only of what they can give with their vocal ability. If by any chance one of the coaches likes what they hear, they would do a button-press which would allow their chair to turn around and face the performer for the first time, signifying that they would like to mentor them. However, if no coach

turns around then the contestant is sent home. The set-up eliminates biases that have nothing to do with singing talent and also strengthens the credibility of the judges themselves because the performer’s presence doesn’t affect their judgment at all. Thus a chair-turn is a performer’s only assurance of making it through the first round. The show’s debut has proven so far that this singing competition is really about “The Voice.” Watch the show 0uring ABS-CBN’s weekend primetime block, Saturday - 9:00pm after “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and Sunday - 8:15pm after Rated K.

Flash flood, traffic jam didn’t spare celebrities
On Monday night thousands of motorists and commuters, including celebrities, were stranded due to the flash floods on Monday night. Among the celebrities who aired their ire on the six-hour traffic jam via the social media were Heart Evangelista, Cesca Litton, TV hostlawyer, Karen Jimeno, and beauty queen Shamcey Supsup But Sitti Navarro and Jim Paredes insisted on thinking positively on the situation by saying that the state of affairs would be the most opportune time to shoot a film/video if one needs traffic and flooding in the background. On Instagram, Bianca Gonzales happily posted a photo of her boyfriend JC Intal who came to her rescue by using a bike, even bringing an extra raincoat, to pick her up while she was stuck in traffic for more than two hours.

Nora Aunor, Jericho Rosales shine in 2013 Gawad Urian Awards
S
uperstar Nora Aunor, as expected, won the Best Actress trophy for Brillante Mendoza’s “Thy Womb.” in the 36th Gawad Urian Awards held Tuesday night at the NBC Tent in Taguig City. Aunor, 60, was cited for her role as a Badjao midwife troubled by failure and infertility. This is Aunor’s 7th Urian award, one trophy shy of matching Vilma Santos, the most awarded performer thus far in the Urian’s history. For his part, Rosales, 33, won for his role in Ian Loreños’ “Alagwa,” as a single parent caught in the web of human trafficking as he searches for his missing son. Rosales is a first timer in the Urian Awards. The other major awardees are Alessandra de Rossi as Best
Supporting Actress for her role as a young mother in “Sta. Niña,” and Art Acuña winning his second Best Supporting Actor for his role as a as a corrupt policeman in Lawrence Fajardo’s “Posas.” The Best Director prize went to Adolfo Alix Jr for his crime drama, “Mater Dolorosa,” while Mendoza
was awarded another Urian for his production design in his own film, “Thy Womb.” The Best Picture prize went to Arnel Mardoquio’s “Ang Paglalakbay ng mga Bituin sa Gabing Madilim,” a moving drama set against the conflict in Mindanao.
‘Dance of the Steel Bars’ highlights dancing passion inside prison cell Director-journalist Cesar Apolinario must been have been fascinated by the dancing inmates of the Cebu Rehabilitation Center which hit YouTube some years that he made a film not only featuring the dancing prisoners but on the injustice, jail mismanagement, riots, and innocent people languishing in jail because they can’t afford to hire lawyers. The movie “Dance of the Steel Bars” features the passion for dance of Mando (Dingdong Dantes) who genuinely loves dance but he can’t give his all for his art because his father interprets
dancing with homosexuality. Mando accidentally kills his gay dancing teacher. He landed in jail in the company of Frank Parish (Patrick Bergin) and Gudo (Mon Confiado). Mando also meets a gay dancer Allona (Joey Paras) who shares his interest in dance. Towards the end of the film, Mando let go off his inhibitions to dance in public and joins the dancing finale of the film. Critics considered the film as Dingdong’s best as an actor.

MTRCB says ‘comedy academy’ wont gag freedom of expression
“Gipit sa Utang? Lunasan natin, kaya natin ito.”
M
ovie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Chair Eugenio “Toto” Villareal clarified that the suggested “comedy academy” wouldn’t impose an MTRCBapproved type of humor but instead would serve as a venue for comedians to get together and discuss among themselves the best practices in their field. Villareal, in a newspaper interview, also pointed out that the idea is an opportunity for the movie industry to initiate dialogue and positive change having in mind MTRCB‘s mandate as not merely regulatory, but also developmental. The idea came about after the controversy surrounding the “rape” joke at the May 17 concert
of comedian Jose Marie Viceral, aka Vice Ganda, erupted in the media. The joke was directed at GMA 7 news executive Jessica Soho but was interpreted by some sectors as an insult against women in general. The review board has so far met with ABS-CBN, of which Vice Ganda is a contract artist. The board will also meet with GMA 7 and TV5 representatives.

Filipino Night at the Red River Ex
W
alking through the grounds at the Red River Ex, it could easily be said that almost every night is Filipino Night. On Saturday, June 15th the Filipino Journal hosted a relatively small group of fans and readers at the Red River Ex. After a relatively
short meet & greet with Red River Ex CEO, Garth Rogerson it was off to the amusement rides, games and those little mini donuts for everyone! While the kids ran off to Kiddieland, the kids at heart went to the big kids rides including Mach 3, which is the newest ride at the Red River Ex.

Renaissance Man Hard Working Role Model Leading By Example.
A
Written & Styled by: Tia Provici
s a kid growing up in the north end, Ginno did not have the ambition to be a role model. Rather, this rebellious teenager was amongst the barkada of friends from the "bad boy" side of the tracks. Growing up with no father and watching his mom work tirelessly to make ends meet, made Ginno grow up fast. Life's hardships gave Ginno the drive to do the best he could to assist his mom strive for a better life. This bilingual man was born in Winnipeg. He pays homage to his Lola, for teaching him how to speak tagalog. It was a blessing in disguise that his Lola did not speak

a word of English. He learned from necessity. She gave him the ability to connect with society as well as immigrant Pinoys by making them feel comfortable to speak in their choice of English, Taglish or just straight up Tagalog. Fast forward to the present, Ginno Bains is the Vice President of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC) and is the proud owner of Ginno's Automotive. He and his staff of 3 have been in business for 5 years. This charismatic gentleman has mastered the art of catching people's attention with his light hearted, comedic wit.

"The key to success is failing, then learning from your mistakes, improve and trying again" says Bains. He further imparts "nothing is impossible if you have the right tools. Ginno also states that "finding your way to learn" will get you to where you want to be in life" Ginno is a dutiful, caring son. When his mom suffered a stroke, putting her in a nursing home was not an option! He firmly states," I grew up with my mom taking care of me and my sister all by herself. Now it's my turn to care of her. No if ands or buts!" He and the love of his life, Lynda, have been together through thick and thin in life's journey for 14 years. Bain's eyes beam with fatherly pride when he talks about his three daughters. "My 13 year old Talynne is competitive and loves playing
basketball. Ginna-Lyn is 11. She's financially smart and thinks before she buys. My youngest, Kayli, who is 8, is our cuddly baby who's helpful and takes Grand Ma for walks. This dad plays no favorites and loves all of his daughters equally. Ginno says he learned to be a good father by watching TV shows Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Cosby Show, and Leave it to Beaver. He further defines that a good dad is being able listen, multi task, shut out work/business and focus on family. Ginno & Lynda insist that their family eat together at least once a day. Bawal ang Bata! (On Hypocrisy, Rudeness, Insensitivity, and Legality)
(The legal definition of ‘child’ generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority; in Canada, the age of majority is 18; therefore, anyone who is 17 years old or under is legally considered a minor [Wikipedia].)
O
n June 14, we attended the celebration in Winnipeg of Philippine Independence at Marlborough Hotel as part of the Filipino Journal family. Funny and annoying detail was, the event's theme was "Celebrating Families," and then one of the organizers upon seeing that Inna and I were with our four-year-old son Evawwen as we entered the hall, she gave us a condescending look of disapproval. And then it did not stop there. When we were requesting for a high chair, we heard the same organizer’s saying that they could not give us an extra chair and commented whisperingly that we should not have brought a child with us in the first place. This was the second time it happened with the same event and with the same organizer. For one, Evawwen was as always manageable and relatively behaved and did not stray far from our table and never cried or put a tantrum, ever. Second, as usual, there was no indication on the ticket nor in the event program that children were not allowed; third, we were there not as gatecrashers nor hangers-on so we deserved recognition, and last, there were also another family who came with a child.
Because I am an understanding, well-mannered, and intelligent person, I didn't react untowardly to that person’s disrespectful, discourteous, unethical, and socially unacceptable behavior. Her faults were 1) if the organizers didn’t like children at the event, then they should have indicated that detail clearly on the forty-dollar ticket, 2) if the said organizer didn’t approve of our bringing our kid with us, then she should have called me in private and expressed her disapproval and gave me her reasons so at least I could have explained my side and been able to tell her that they should have indicated that detail on the ticket if that was very important to them, and 3) uttering unsavory remarks against someone especially in public and at the person’s earshot is plainly rude, unethical, and unbecoming. Being a well-adjusted and socially and multiculturally oriented person, I knew very well that to react publicly in a confrontational, similarly rude and unethical way would have made me nothing different from her. This was the reason we just ignored her bad behavior and simply went on our business of being there—that was, to enjoy the dinner, socialize with some people we know, and listen to the speakers and watch the performers amidst the noise of some of the attendees who couldn’t care less except for the delicious crème brûlée. However, the next time I encounter a similar incident with this same person, I will no longer ignore her; I will ensure that I stand up to defend my principles: I will not confront and call her attention in front of the people around, but rather I will ask her if I can talk to her in private, and there shall I discuss with her my issue about her action. I will also write her a formal letter to document the incident, making all the members of the committee copyees so they can discuss about putting the rule “No children allowed” on the tickets for their next event to be fair with the invitees and attendees if having
children at such events really bothers them. Final Note The person in question was one of the speakers. How I cringed in disbelief and disgust as she peppered her speech with idealistic and rhetorical statements about the importance of ‘family’ and ‘values’ in the Filipino culture and yet had the temerity to express her rudeness and distasteful action to a family who had done nothing wrong in a legal or technical perspective. But, the question that might be in the minds of many observers: Why did we need to bring our child/ ren with us to some social gatherings like that? Social events are opportunities for educational experience for the child in the aspect of socialization, enabling him to develop further his social skills. And as long as an event does not bear the rule "No children allowed," we have the legal right to take our children with us—and as courtesy, we should also be ready diligently to manage our child's behavior and take responsibility for his actions. After all, we—the parents—do not smoke nor drink anything alcoholic—so we are not even missing anything.

Horoscope You will be successful in your profession and all matters would materialize smoothly. You can expect to have some meaningful discussions with your family. Have your questions prepared in advance and be respectful of their time. Relationship with your family members and others would be cordial. Spend time somewhere where you can enjoy beauty, today -- whether it’s a garden, an art museum, or a flower market. It’s important to appreciate aesthetically-pleasing things, especially right now when your creativity could use some inspiration. It’s almost like the universe will pick you up and put you down somewhere else. Just keep moving forward and have faith you are on the right path.
Focus on more productive, positive things today. Be prepared to accept change in your life, Gemini, and stay open to all possibilities. The day is good for you to take some vital decisions. The ruler of love and money rub shoulders this week, and can open doors for you on a business and personal level.
PAHALANG
Today is a time to free yourself from the restrictions that others have placed upon you. Stay on purpose and you will get to where you are going. You are the glue in your social circle right now, so it’s time to make plans to make sure they happen! It’s a good day to get the group together and get everyone focused on one of its favorite events.
The sun shines for only so many hours, on a given day, and it’s up to you to make the most of it! So if the weather cooperates today, you should try to spend as much time outside as possible. You can enter a conversation that is positive to do with your work this week. It is wise to sit back and see what the other person has to offer.
Your eye for detail is bringing the little things into sharp focus today. You will be out expecting to have a good time but you will not be getting the rewards that were promised to you. It is because you are looking for something that only exists in the advertising and marketing world. Keep an optimistic attitude towards everything and you will make great progress in all your endeavors.
You want to feel good about yourself and the way you do things. An instinctive urge to get serious about taking care of yourself at many levels is emphasized now. Spend time alone today to listen to where your thoughts take you. This is a good time to take note of inner goals and aspirations.
Not everyone is going to say what they mean, so be careful you don’t take someone on face value if your intuition is telling you otherwise. You are pretty good at summing people up. This is an excellent time to and also to learn more about your own inner depths. You will have a sigh of relief and enjoy this day for the great feeling that it brings you.
When a surge of positive thinking hits you early on today, you should use it to help others. Giving to the people you love enables you to make stronger connections to them. People who are on your team will do just about anything for you, and that’s because when someone is important to you, you look after them.
It’s time for some downtime anyway, so take things down a notch today -- even if you feel like doing more. This is an excellent time when you should be listening more closely to yourself and doing what’s right for your health and also to learn more about your own inner depths. Welcome this day with open arms and a positive outlook!
You are in the middle of changes in your life, work and home, so don’t make a rash decision. Double check all your work today as well. Little errors may cost you both time and money. Take care when dealing with others, and they will take care when dealing with you.
This is a prime day for you, and you are poised to get exactly what you want -- as long as you show the universe that you want it. Just be careful right now that you don’t take on too much, you don’t want to over–promise and under–deliver. Put in the extra hours and extra effort that may be required -- it will all be worth it.

Giving Back to the Community through Dancing “Make sure you’re ready when the opportunity comes,” says Romeo Suban, 27, a dance instructor at St. John’s High School. Suban is the director of Un1te Dance Company, a hip-hop dance company he started in 2005. “Un1te’s mandate is to unite people. It’s a hub where people come together and dance. It doesn’t matter where you come from, whatever studio, school, gender, title, or training, as long as you dance,” he says.
June 20-July 5, 2013
The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
Un1te trains and prepares dancers for new opportunities in a positive environment. “Dancers are special because dancing is something that people can’t take away.” On June 1, 2013, Un1te hosted In The Zone 6, a dance competition that brings together all the best dance crews across the country. This year’s 37 teams were from Winnipeg, Niverville, Calgary, and Edmonton. The competition had
three categories: junior, varsity, and adult. The first place winner in each category won $300, $700, and $1000, respectively. The event was a success. They sold more than 700 tickets and there were 500 performers and staff. The place was packed and there were not enough seats for everyone. “There were 1200+ people who were part of the experience, and that says something about Winnipeg: that dance is supported and valued.” Who would have thought that this former Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) hip-hop instructor was once a shy and quiet boy? “I was six years old when my family moved to Canada. I was super shy because of the culture clash. You try to be Canadian, but you still want to be a Filipino.” He started dancing when he was 15 at Sisler High School. He started with jazz, a bit of ballet, hiphop, and pop dancing. “Dancing gave me confidence and self-esteem. It gave me a voice.” At 18, he realized that he could make dancing a career. Working at Rainbow Stage from 2003 to 2004 gave him new opportunities. “I learned so much about the business. I learned what I really want and that I want to give back to my community. I wanted to give opportunities to others and myself, that’s why I created Un1te.” His upbringing keeps him grounded. His parents’ sacrifice inspired him to work hard. “Being a Filipino motivates me to succeed. Filipinos work hard. We find ways to get through the problems and obstacles.”
All photos & articles available online!
Dancing will always be a part of his life. “You can express so many things without saying anything. You can express it through movement.” Suban believes that Winnipeg is a small but talented city— specifically the dancers. “Luck and hard work equals to opportunity. You gotta be ready
to go so when the audition comes, you have the skills and experience to get the job done.” Un1te offers hip-hop and contemporary drop-ins on Monday nights, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Follow them on Twitter and Instagram @un1tedance and subscribe to their YouTube channel un1tedanco to watch clips from In The Zone 6.

Arms race Japan – Although the U.S.Japan Treaty binds the U.S. to come to the aid of Japan in the event of an external aggression, Japan is not taking any chances. Despite Japan’s pacifist constitution, Japan has built one of the strongest navies in the world. In recent years, she increased her military spending due to her territorial dispute with China over sovereignty of the Senkaku islands (Diaoyu to China), which Japan administers. China’s constant intrusion into the waters around the eight uninhabited islands and islets is worrisome. Taiwan -- Under constant threat from Chinese invasion, Taiwan is armed to the hilt. India is rapidly expanding her navy to deal with China’s increasing presence in the Indian Ocean. Currently, she has one aircraft carrier that she purchased from the United Kingdom. She also bought a refurbished Russian aircraft carrier, which will be delivered in December. And she is also building two indigenous aircraft carriers. India needs at least 24 conventional submarines to deter China on her east coast and Pakistan on her west coast. She has currently 14 conventional submarines; however, only half are available for deployment. Six submarines have been ordered and will be delivered in 2016. Strategic alliances In 2012, the defense ministers of the U.S., Australia, and Japan met at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Their joint statement said that they agreed to “develop and implement an action plan that promotes a strong, dynamic and flexible trilateral defense relationship over the remainder of this decade to enhance the security and prosperity of the region.” The Trilateral Security and Defense Cooperation Forum began at senior officials level in 2002 and progressed to ministerial levels in 2007. Recently, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Japan bore fruit. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and he signed several major infrastructure and defense-technology deals, and agreed to speed up dialogue on nuclear cooperation and conduct more joint naval exercises. A week later, Indian Defense Minister A.K. Antony and his Australian counterpart, Stephen Smith, met in Canberra where they agreed to strengthen their military ties and also to conduct joint naval exercises. At about the same time, India deployed a fleet of four warships to the South China Sea where they visited Malaysia and Vietnam. The fleet’s next stop – the Philippines. India’s strategic importance to maintaining the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region cannot be ignored now that the U.S. is rebalancing her interests from Europe and the Middle East toward Asia. Simply said, the U.S. needs nuclear-armed India to play a key role in the Indo-Pacific region. Add to the equation the alliances that the U.S. has with Japan, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Philippines, and to some extent, Vietnam, it would create a formidable force that would make China think twice before embarking on a land-grabbing expedition. With the arms race in the IndoPacific region going on, a de facto Cold War exists. But like the old Cold War, the new Cold War keeps the balance of power and prevents erratic behavior by any country that nurtures expansionist dreams. As the popular saying goes, “The best defense is a good offense.” It prevented a nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union from erupting during the Cold War. Would an arms race prevent war between China and the U.S. and her allies in the IndoPacific region or would it fuel the engine of war?
