encourage clients to try and ensure contributions were made to a spousal RRSP partly to take advantage of this credit for both spouses. There still remain reasons to continue making spousal contributions but couples can now avail themselves of the Joint Election to Split Pension Income and avail themselves of this deduction for both persons. At the very least this election allows couples to both use the pension income deduction and take advantage of savings of approximately $400 per person. 2. Donations. This claim has been around for some time. It is necessary to have donation receipts with the charities business number and it must be an approved charity by Canada Revenue. The first $200 is only eligible for a deduction at the minimum tax rate, but any amount

conditions, you may be eligible to claim the disability amount of Federally $7,546 and Provincially for example Manitoba $6,180 and Alberta $13,331. Once again, you should be careful. There are people who have tried to take advantage of this claim and may charge you a considerable amount for the inconvenience. Your doctor or other appropriate professional should complete the diagnosis and I suggest you have a trusted accountant send it in to Canada Revenue for you. As well, be familiar with the requirements as ultimately you are responsible for the claim which you have claimed. 4. Medical Expenses – You may be able to claim a nonrefundable tax credit based on the cost of previously unclaimed medical expenses for any 12-month period ending in 2012. Most people use the calendar, however if, for example you have a no bills in January 2012 and large bills in December 2012 and January 2013, you may wish to make a claim next year for the period February 1,2012 to January 31, 2013. The deduction is the lessor of 3% of your net income and $2,109 with varying
limits for the provinces e.g. Manitoba $1,728 and Alberta $2,233. Included are most medical fees and expenditures including prescription glasses, drugs, chiropractic, attendant care, hospital, wheelchair, hearing aids, health insurance payments, etc. Only those expenditures approved by your Provincial government plan can be claimed. Acupuncture, for example, can only be claimed in some provinces. Receipts are required and cancelled cheques or credit card vouchers are not adequate support for a claim. Any amounts reimbursed by an insurance plan cannot be claimed. Terry Robert B.A., C.M.A., C.G.A. R. T. his time I will discuss a few specific items to watch when doing your tax returns. 1. Pension Income Credit. For some time the federal government has provided a federal tax credit of 15% up to a maximum of $2,000 and the provincial government have provided a similar credit in Manitoba (similar to most provinces) of $1,000. Ontario and Alberta have calculated the credit indexed on the base of $1,000 and currently are at $1,300 and $1,331 respectively. Pensions that can be used are superannuation or registered pension funds as well as RRSPs, DPSPS or RRIFs, the latter three where the pensioner is at least 65 years of age or as a consequence of the death of a spouse plus many foreign pensions. At one time we used to
over the $200 per year receives a tax credit at the highest tax rate regardless of the taxable income of the taxpayer. Donation receipts should be combined for spouses, so they don’t have to meet the $200 threshold twice and, as donation receipts can be carried forward five years, you may wish delay claiming the donation for some years to limit the effect of claiming the $200 threshold. For example, if you make donations of $200/year, and hold claim for five years you will only be deducted the $200 once. You still must enter the annual donation each year but indicate it is to be carried forward. Charitable donations do have a “be very careful side” to them. This is best summed up as if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It seems someone always tries to take advantage and charities have been victims. If the receipt is going to be for more than your contribution or for artwork to name a couple of possible concerns, check with your accountant to make sure the scheme is on the up and up. 3. Disability Amount. If you have a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions, and meet certain

Cruising the Fiordland of New Zealand
T
he most unforgettable highlight of our December voyage Down Under is cruising the Fiordland National Park, the largest national park of New Zealand. One of the most majestic natural wonders of New Zealand, the Fiordland occupying the southwest corner of the South Island is dominated by the snowcapped mountains (the Southern Alps), deep lakes and oceanfilled steep valleys, crenellated coasts, and cascading waterfalls. The area is also rich in wildlife including dolphins, seals and birds. Fiordland features a number of fiords often named "sounds" of which Milford Sound is the most famous and most visited. In the early morning of 29 December the cruise ship Diamond Princess entered the Milford Sound from the narrow entrance so concealed when viewed from the Tasman Sea (the large body of water between Australia and New
Zealand named after the Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman). Although British explorer Capt. James Cook missed entirely the entrance during his first voyage of exploration some 200 years ago he and his crew were the first Europeans to visit extensively the fiordland. Mystic Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Maori), carved from hard granite mountains by glaciers million years ago, has been judged as world's top travel destination by 2008 Travelers' Choice Destination Award. Rudyard Kipling, the English short story writer, poet and novelist, considered Milford Sound as the 8th wonder of the world. Towering over Milford Sound is the Mitre Peaks soaring up 1,692 meters from the water so named because its peak resembles the mitre headwear of Christian bishop. After spending two hours in Milford Sound the Princess
entered Thompson Sound, which runs 15 kms. inland and connects to the Doubtful Sound with a roughly triangular shape, Secretary Sound, lying in between. Rich in fauna and flora, Doubtful Sound, sometimes called the "sound of silence" because of its cloistered serenity, named by Capt. Cook as Doubtful Sound because he was not sure whether it was navigable under sail, is the deepest of the fiords. Situated within the fiordland are Browne Falls and Sutherland Falls which rank among the tallest waterfalls in the world and three deepest lakes of New Zealand Lake Hauroko, Manapouri and Te

Anau. This part of New Zealand has a very wet climate, receiving 6,300 mm of rainfall every year. Finally the Princess entered Dusky Sound, one of the most complex of the many fiords. After exiting Dusky Sound the boat sailed to the south easterly course into the Tasman Sea again
along the southwest coast of New Zealand enroute to Port Chalmers. Note: Fiord (or fjord) is a long, narrow deep inlet from the sea between steep slopes of a mountainous coast. Fjords usually occur where ocean flows into valleys formed near the coast by glaciers.

March 5-20, 2013 about freedom dressing; it should be also about smart and conscious dressing (even appropriate dressing). For example, if you are going to a party and you decide to wear very skimpy attire, then make sure that you go there by car or any personal vehicle—not by tricycle, jeepney, bus, nor even taxicab. If you are going out and know that your destination is a very public and densely populated place, then dress down, because surely you will be walking amidst people from various walks of life and you will never know if there would be some evil men who could not control their lust and might express it on you. inconspicuously and unattractively. Of course, there will remain an iota of possibility that you might still encounter a predator who really doesn't care about what you wear but is only in the heated mood to pounce on anyone, but at least you minimize the element of attraction. This is also similar to a defense mechanism called camouflaging or blending in. If you stick out in a crowd or do not blend quietly with the current environment, you are easily seen or exposed too much. So, there is still validity in the idea of dressing appropriately. Nonetheless, if you are attending a naked party or going to a nudist beach resort, then— for beauty's sake!—don't wear anything—not even a bowtie nor a bunnytail! Ultimately, everything boils down to the ability to defend oneself and to stand up with what you are wearing. You have the freedom to look your best, sexiest, most attractive, most beautiful, most alluring, or even most head-turning physical appearance but only when the destination and the route are favorable. But if you are really bold and brave enough, then go ahead, wear your most attractive clothes and appear in your most attractive self the next time you will be coming home or going out walking alone in a very dark and isolated area. Just make sure you're mindful of your surroundings, extra careful, able to defend yourself, and know what to do when someone begins to mistreat you. Sa Madaling Salita Bawat babae ay may karapatang maging maganda at kaakit-akit, subalit kailangan din naman nilang maging ligtas at alerto sa delikadong pagkakataon. Now and then: Festival du Voyageur
A
by Jackie Doming
s a little girl, I always looked forward to one major event in February: le Festival du Voyageur. It almost felt like the clock was wound back a few centuries when my small inner city French immersion school was filled with merriment of the fur trade era. Teachers walked around in traditional voyageur garb, students tightened bright red ceintures fléchées around their waists, and the music class was filled with sounds of clapping wooden spoons. Visiting Fort Gibraltar was an annual routine. In my eyes, it only got better every year - the ice sculptures were grander, the stories were more vibrant, and the atmosphere brimmed with friendly Franco-Manitoban warmth. In my adolescence and early adulthood, I naively tossed the Festival to the wayside. The idea of visiting what some would consider an elementary playground wasn’t at the top of a teenager’s mind. Stories around the warm fires were soon forgotten, and the flavour of sweet maple syrup was nothing more than a lingering figment of my taste buds’ imagination.
Hanging out at the Snow Bar with Virgin 103’s Ace Burpee
It wasn’t until this past February I returned to the Festival du Voyageur, over ten years later. Visiting Fort Gibraltar is a completely different experience as an adult. It was still breathtaking – but for very different reasons. People were tightly packed in the Snow Bar, pounding down shots of caribou. Tents were filled with drunken song and dance. The sound of local Francophone artists echoed across the former fur trading grounds. Although this year’s visit to the Festival du Voyageur wasn’t quite like how I remembered, it’s still a celebration near and dear to my heart. The beauty of the Festival is there is never a shortage of things to see and do - plenty more so when you’re old enough to experience the other half of it. So let’s raise our glasses (or shots of caribou) and toast to the beauty of Manitoba’s rich history, and to the hardships suffered by the voyageurs from centuries ago. Their bravery helped shape the amazing culture we embrace and celebrate today. J’adore le Festival du Voyageur. J’adore Winnipeg. Hé Ho!
Cheers as we raise our ice glasses of caribou to celebrate Festival! He ho! Photos by Jackire Doming

he Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty's dedicated service to our country. And at the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. From coast to coast, from every sector in the Canadian society, there are 60,000 recipients of the Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal. And in the Filipino community in Manitoba, the awardees have made outstanding contributions to their communities and the country. Governor General of Canada to present the medals at Rideau Hall last Feburary 6, 2012, this date commemorates Her Majesty the Queen's accesision to the throne on February 6, 1952. Governor General David Johnston said: "Six decades ago, a young Queen began her reign, one focused on service to others. Her Majesty has experience and seen many hardships but also many joys. Through it all, she has remained dedicated to serving the crown and
the people of the Commonwealth. As a representative of the Crown in Canada, and as one who always admired the Queen's steadfast devotion, I am pleased to honor this occasion to present the 60 Canadians with the Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said: "On this day exactly six years ago, our government was first sworn into office by then Governor General Michaelle Jean. But it was on this very day 60 years ago- in other words, over a period ten times as long - that her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll acceded to the Throne as Queen of Canada. Six decades later, we offer our deep appreciation for her lifetime
of devotion. On this occasion, we inaugurate an honour recognizing that same spirit of service among Canadians across the country, The Diamond Jubilee Medal, which the Queen has personally approved,is the cornerstone of our celebration of her 60th year on the throne - an honour intended to recognize thousands of Canadians for selfless devotion to their fellow citizens and to our country. Thus, in this grand room, we see the good heart of a great nation. The recipients of this medal are drawn from every walk of life in every region of Canada, in all its magnificent variety. that built our country, the principles that guide it, and the hope that draws it forward. When I consider Canada's future, the spirit of service reflected in those here today, and the thousands of other Canadians who will be awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal over the course of the year, it gives me great hope for our country. As Prime Minister, on behalf of your fellow Canadians, I thank you and I congratulate you.” Nominating officers include Senator Jun Enverga, Members of the Parliament, Pat Martin and Kevin Lamoureux, and Premier Greg Salinger.

Since 1959, the couple’s pioneering spirits have become the cornerstones in the foundation of the Filipino Community in Winnipeg. Their initiative and with the help of other kababayans, they founded the first Filipino Association . When the Filipino immigrants arrived to work in the garment industry in Winnipeg in the late 60’s, in the 70’s and 80’s, Dr. Roland and wife Irene helped in the settlement process for the new arrivals. As a result, they became adopted parents and became more involved in the well-being of their kababayans. Dr. Roland Guzman became an honorary consul general which lasted for 21 years. The husband and wife team was one of the founders of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba and helped raise funds to build the centre. Other initiatives include Fil-Can Disaster Relief Committee, Philippine Heritage Committee and adviser of of some regional associations. As a founder of Knights of Rizal, he became the first Chapter Commander and initiated the promote Rizal’s life and ideals. Dr. Irene Guzman is also active in Ladies of Rizal and in PCCM as a past asst. treasurer.
Dr. Magsino is the 1st Filipino to become a Dean of Education at the University of Manitoba. As an educator, he becomes an inspiration of many kababayans especially the youth to pursue higher learning and to achieve excellence in any undertakings.Dr. Magsino, together with his wife, Leah Enverga-Magsino, have become involved in the Filipino community . One of the founding members of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba, he was able to help realize the dreams of the Filipinos to have a centre. He became the president of PCCM, and actively involved in various groups such as Knights of Rizal, UST Alumni, QPAM and other professional associations. With his exemplary contributions to the Filipino community, he was awarded the Order of Manitoba; and a distinguished award given by the Philippine government.
When Rod and Linda arrived in Winnipeg in 1974, they were surprised to see a thriving Filipino community in the city. This triggered their interests to volunteer. After finding works, they enrolled at the University of Manitoba as night students to pursue some courses needed to challenge the demand in the work force. Between work and study, Rod and Linda found time to volunteer. Being a journalist in Manila, Rod started writing his column in the Filipino newspaper and this led to publication of the Filipino Journal in 1987. Between work and study, Rod and Linda helped organize The Institute of Philppine Studies, UST Alumni, and other regional associations. Rod ventured in business, in theatre and in films. Through these initiatives, Rod inspired young people to harness their talents. He became a PCCM president in 2009-2010; and was elected president of Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba. In 1996, Rod won the Rizal International Poetry Contest, sponsored by the Knights of Rizal. He is the current president of MACFFA. Fred de Villa
MLA Ted Marcelino, Fred de Villa, Premier Greg Salinger
An activist, Fred has the innate leadership in rallying the Filipino community into action. One classic event was the 1993 case against a major supermarket chain
in Winnipeg. De Villa, with the help of other leaders, rallied the community to join the protest and the demonstration and the boycott. Other ethnic groups joined. The Filipinos won and the case become a wake-up call for other businesses. Fred became the interim-chair, an ad-hoc, Filipino Coalition for Human Rights and this led to Fred’s nomination for Manitoba Human Rights Achievement Awards in 1998. Fred also initiated to stop the mainstream media not to identify the ethnic background of an accused person. Added to his activism, Fred helped organize many Filipino associations. For many years, he became mayor and ambassador of the Magdaragat Pavilion during the Folklorama

UFC Comes to Winnipeg this June
E
arly Monday, March 4, Ace Burpee came to my office and asked me if I had heard anything about the press conference at the MTS Centre. True North Sports and Entertainment was holding one to announce what they called a “Major Sporting Event”. Hopes high that this was a UFC event, I started poking around. Local promoters shrugged at the idea while others in the media “didn’t think it was a possibility”. Then I noticed that the event page for UFC 161 on June 15, 2013 listed venue as “TBA”, and location as “TBA/Canada”. Did I read that right? Canada? This HAD
to be it. I did my MMAth. The announcement had to be UFC 161 in Winnipeg. Had to be. I tweeted it out. An hour later after my tweet, multiple sources confirmed it. The official word came the next day, Tuesday, March 5 at the MTS Centre. Tom Wright, former CFL Commissioner, now Director of Operations of UFC Canada announced that UFC 161 will be airing live via pay per view from Winnipeg Saturday, June 15, 2013. Stating that Winnipeg was the next logical choice to bring a UFC card. He said that we proved we are a great sports town and venue with our Winnipeg Jets,
Blue Bombers and Goldeyes. Wright also pointed out that since Winnipeg is basically the centre of North America, it is an easy choice for those from other provinces to travel here for the card. Not to mention the proximity to US cites like Fargo, Minneapolis, Chicago, etc. Whether or not you are a fan of MMA, there is one thing you absolutely cannot deny – the economic impact for Winnipeg is going to be a windfall. Wright mentioned other Canadian markets making upward of $35 million plus, which would be a tremendous boom for our economy. Tom Wright said that when the UFC comes to town, it is not just a one night affair. In fact, it is a weeklong event. With fighters coming in to do meet and greets, media, open work outs and weigh-ins open to the public. One thing Tom Wright repeatedly stated was that he did not do the match making and therefore could not officially announce what fights will make the card. However, he was able to give us one fight and it was a big one: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua versus Antonio Rogerio “Lil’ Nog” Nogueria. Other fight rumors are Tyrone Woodley vs Jake Shields, Rashad Evans vs Dan Henderson and a possible Flyweight Championship fight with title holder Demtrious Johnson defending against John Moraga. I cannot tell you just how elated I am to finally have a UFC
fight card happen right here in Winnipeg. A big thanks goes out to True North Sports and Entertainment for not only did they make this happen, their work in bringing back the Winnipeg Jets also helped put this great city back on the international map. By the way, the tweet I sent out before anyone really knew anything – Communications Coordinator for TNSE, Kallen

Winter driving fun in the 2013 BMW X3
T
here have been several first time experiences in the last couple months of reviewing vehicles. I was at the Detroit Auto Show and the Toronto Auto Show for the first time. Last fall, was my first Porsche media vehicle. This time, it’s my first BMW media vehicle and the timing couldn’t have been more ideal. Timing is always important. The previous experience sitting behind the wheel of a BMW was last spring when my friend Brenda threw me the keys to her new BMW 128i Cabriolet. Since then, I’ve been hanging out with a lot of new BMW owners. As I mentioned, the timing on the BMW X3 media schedule was perfect. Perfect in the sense that the X3 was a very capable winter vehicle and given the amount of snow we’ve had this season, the X3 All-Wheel Drive system would make my life a lot easier.
The 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i is a spacious and elegant compact luxury crossover. It offers a firm ride with its 8-speed automatic turbocharged 2.0L inline 4-cylinderengine and delivers 240 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It’s also pretty quick off the line with a 0-100km/ hr in under 8 seconds. There’s a lot to be said about BMW’s tag line “The Ultimate Driving Experience” and in the short week that I had the X3, every moment was enjoyable. It also helped that the media vehicle was loaded with premium options such as the panorama sunroof, Bi-Xenon headlights and most importantly, SIRIUS Satellite Radio. For the few cloudless days throughout the week, the panorama sunroof certainly added to the joy of driving. I always appreciate it when the sun comes out. I don’t think I could own a vehicle if it didn’t have a sunroof. Now that many more vehicles in
this compact crossover class are offering panorama sunroofs, this option would be at the top of my list. The cabin on the X3 is quite exquisite. Sitting in the driver’s seat really adds to the “Ultimate Driving Experience” with soft leather everywhere. Throw in the heated seats, heated steering wheel and my favourite, paddle shifters. The only thing missing
Filipino Journal 19
is a Starbucks barista in the passenger seat offering up spiced lattes as I drive around running daily errands. It handled the snow and ice quite well, so I can only assume that it will be able to handle the potholes come spring. Other vehicles in the luxury crossover class include the Audi Q5, Acura RDX, Cadillac SRX, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
and the Infiniti EX. The 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i as tested, was priced at $50,000 which included the Premium Package, Technology Package, BMW Apps Package and SIRIUS as one of the stand alone options. Fuel consumption is listed at 9.5L/100km in the city, 7.0L/100km on the highway and 8.3L/100km combined.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
by Bob Gabuna

In Remembrance
NUNAVUT – The preceding month is an auspicious period of sorts. For one, it is EDSA ’86 Anniversary, as well, it is my birth month. Two, it is the Death Anniversary of Linda, the late Editor-in-Chief of the Filipino Journal, who is the topic of my article on this issue----the celebration of her life, how she had been an influence to this writer in one way or the other. I met Linda at Casa Buena through Rod Cantiveros. I left the Philippines with my family on 22 December 1987. The following day of our arrival my sister-inlaw, Bernadette, suggested if I need to mingle with Filipinos I shall visit Casa Buena where Filipinos congregate to socialize and buy Oriental foods. At Casa Bueno, curious to discover my new
environment I keep turning left and right when I heard a baritone voice, “Bagong dating ka ano?” Albeit startled, I managed to reply, “Paano mong nalaman na bagong salta ako?” My greeter gave out a wide grin with chuckles, “Ang suot mo, manipis, halata, hindi gawa dito sa Canada”. Thereafter, Rod invited me for coffee. We chat about the latest news from the old homeland. Learning I had formal studies in Journalism, Rod gleefully shared that he and his wife, Linda, recently bought out a community paper and renamed it, The Filipino Journal. That if I am interested to contribute a column, I would be introduced to Linda being the Editor of the paper. I disclosed to Rod that in the Philippines I do not regularly write an opinion column except when
I was asked to write editorials as guest, or write policy speeches of some politicians, or help draft policy papers to bureaucrats. I am more of a “ghost writer” in terms of writing experience. “When are you prepared to submit your maiden column?” Linda inquired with her soft voice when I was introduced to her. “I will find fine time since I still need a sufficient period to adjust”, I reluctantly replied since I am not certain of the instance I could start writing. In the period that I work with her for two decades until her body succumbed to the debilitating ailment, I find Linda a paragon of patience. I never felt any pressure when we have deadlines to beat since the printer has schedules too to beat to finish their job orders. Her reminders are gentle when I am remiss in my in my submission. Linda would gently say, “Rod is driving tomorrow to Steinbach to print the last edition. Do you think before 12:00 midnight you can send off your column?” I remember the days when The Filipino Journal and the radio program, Good Morning Philippines took the lead role in
boycotting a chain of grocery stores. After a yearlong boycott the Head Office of said grocery chain contacted me through a kababayan explaining that since The Filipino Journal and Good Morning Philippines were in tandem in leading the boycott against them, the query was conveyed if it is possible the Filipino Community could now “forgive” and be “reconciled” with the establishment? (I received the information that the store was losing sales of $50,000.00 per day. The other members of the migrant groups, i.e., East Indians, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Pakistani joined the boycott too). The first party I conferred with regarding the sensitive matter are the spouses Rod and Linda. The latter opined, “Bob, we are Christians. We have the right to defend our honor. But, we neither harbor grudges, nor are we vindictive people”. On that note the other community leaders at the time were contacted to discuss the issue of lifting the call of boycott and “accept” the offer of apology of the offending establishment. The seven of us including Linda Cantiveros and I, were dubbed as the Committee of Seven. The five others were Rey “Kaka” Pacheco, Fred de Villa, Ric dela Cruz, Edda Pangilinan, and the late Joe Sulit. When the Commission of Overseas Filipinos sought documented information about the precedent setting act of expatriate Filipinos not only in North America but elsewhere, copies of The Filipino Journal were mailed out to Malacanang Palace. Linda, being the Editor-inChief, is always in the forefront on issues that affect the interests of the old homeland. Occasions I vividly recall was the lobby in behalf of the Philippine Airlines to grant the Flag Carrier landing rights in Canada. It was a long drawn effort. But today, Canada, have granted the airlines direct flight from Manila to Toronto and return. When I lodged the complaint of racial discrimination against Winnipeg Free Press and the Winnipeg Police Service for naming the ethnic background of offenders who are members of the Filipino-Canadian Community when they were suspected of violation; but, does not name the country of origin of convicted
March 5-20, 2013
criminals who are Caucasian looking----Linda supported me to grieve with the concerned respective parties. A meeting with the management of Winnipeg Free Press were convened joined by a police officer. Curiously, in 1999, I was named by Winnipeg Free Press in their rooster of “Who is Who”, earning the moniker of “community activist”. Trying times are the best gauge in determining who the true friends are. In 1988, I proposed to the Provincial Government to recruit Philippine trained nurses to address the shortage of hospital beds for lack of healthcare delivery workers. It took the incumbent government ten years to approve the long delayed proposal. But it was the NDP government that executed the proposal after additional two years of waiting. Bringing Philippine trained nurses was no excursion. I was reviled by many that my proposal was a scam and I was falsely accused of bilking 1,000 Filipino Nurses at $1,000.00 dollars each. I never earned a single cent out of my civic initiative. I lobbied the government to grant settlement funds to nurses who successfully entered Manitoba, yet, some kababayan maliciously suggested in their newsletter that my house be lobbed with a grenade bomb for fooling Filipino Nurses. Sinister innuendos reached my wife that I impregnated five recruited nurses. The days that I was seething with anger plotting my revenge, Linda, all along calmed me down. That I should pray for patience for eventually vindication would come. “Vengeance is mine, said the Lord”, Linda would remind me when rage seem to overcome me. As I write this essay, my wife and I commiserate with the survivors of Linda. I still have the feelings of sorrow over the loss of Linda due to Cancer. We grieved when we lost our job, some mourn when they undergo divorce. But bereavement over the death of a dear one is far deeper than sorrowful feelings when one loses a job, or had gone through divorce. From a Biblical perspective, however, the death of God fearing people is precious in His sight. For in death there is no more suffering, not more pain, and no more sorrow. Yes, life is fragile. Life is short. Death is sure. Life must be handled with care.
Senator Joker Arroyo maintains tag as thriftiest lawmaker Senator Joker P. Arroyo is still the thriftiest lawmaker for the 20th straight year. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada with P62,122,308.412. Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III ranks third with P56,259,173.08. The COA report also said the median expenses was P48,307,382.17 with taxpayers shelling out a total of P1,110,954,789.89 for the expenses of senators. The expenses of Sen. ...five years of remembering the life and love of
Rosalinda Linsangan Natividad Cantiveros we all remember... five winters... a gentle blow of cold air in the wintry march of the year brings the vivid memory of your passing. void you left behind has never been filled and our hearts remained with chains. yet, your passing made as stronger and let your legacy to be alive and inspiring. that night you left us, dark clouds shrouded our being as if hopes and wishes were all astrayed. we became numbed: no words to explain! so sudden, sadness and grief reigned. the world seems turned into a complete pause; and remember the things you’ve done with cause. and thought of heaven as your new place to be where no more pain and sorrow but happiness with thee. deep grief feelings tainted by our mortality and mourning had spoken and accepting reality. yet, so weak are our senses, but our strength of soul persist and say prayers for you to be at peace.
yes, amidst the gripping grief, more prayers are whispered a certain calm, a quiet peace, acceptance prevailed.
immortality is a blessing for what you had lived and gave for what you had loved and worked so brave. and from the community you had served forever in our hearts as long as we live.
with so much love we had shared with so much laughter as most people heard with so much life stories to be told and to be listened...
the seed you had planted is now a sturdy tree. oh, the leaves which give shades to the weary, and the flowers are adored by many; and the fruits are shared by all without envy.
your love, we have felt with so much warmth your hope, we are living with it to reach a much clearer path.
five years have passed, so much to tell you about! the ultimate meanings of care and of love. we are missing you so much for memories are alive and fresh like dew drops.
we will remember you, forever. amidst the wonders of five winters; the new lives of five springs; and full of life of five summers; and the silent pause of five grey novembers!
we will remember you, forever!
love, the greatest act of all among the living, and even in your passing, in our hearts, love is so filling, so consummating, and forever! still with a heavy heart with an uplifting soul, we do love you most, forever, mom...

Website Gives Voice to Burn Survivors
I
By Maria Cristina Laureano
n less than two weeks, the launch of a local burn survivors website has received almost 10,000 hits and local and national media attention. On February 9th Maria Cristina Laureano launched her website, After the Cocoon (afterthecocoon.com), which documents the stories of 10 burn survivors, including Laureano’s own story of becoming a burn survivor at nine-months-old when she received severe burns after being scaled by boiling water. Laureano was inspired to create this resource by her own personal search for burn survivor stories and not finding anything detailed. “I went through my entire life not knowing another burn survivor. I wanted to learn more about other people’s experiences
to see how they would compare to my own,” says Laureano. Laureano also created After the Cocoon for her graduation project for the Creative Communications program at Red River College. On the website, burn survivors not only talk about their burn injuries, but their lives afterwards, such as returning to work or getting involved in the burn survivors community. “Whenever you hear about someone getting burned in the news, you don’t really hear about what happens to them. I think this would be really useful for recovering burn survivors or other burn survivors who’ve never gone through burn support,” says Laureano. The launch, which was held at the Fire Fighters Museum, had speakers from the burn community
(Barbara-Anne Hodge, Chair of the Mamingwey Burn Survivors Community and Martin Johnson, Chair of the Firefighters Burn Fund), a photo exhibition and tours of the museum. John Hart, who received severe burns and had to have his right arm and leg amputated due to a workplace accident and was a participant of the project, emceed the event. The After the Cocoon website launch would like to thank its generous sponsors (the Fire Fighters Museum, the Firefighters Burn Fund, Mamingwey Burn Survivors Society, Steve Burton Photography and Starbucks Coffee Company), door prize sponsors, volunteers, supporters and the burn survivors that courageously and selflessly shared their stories on the website.

Horoscope This day will be a long one, but it is going to be chock full of interesting prospects -- especially if you have been on the lookout for a new romance. If you are willing to take a little bit of a risk with your heart, you will be rewarded. Creativity and a talent for new approaches are the lynch pins to your success, so don’t hold back, let the juices flow.
Thing are perfect on the work front though there could be certain difficulties. Begin to take on more responsibility and you will be in step with what is about to transpire. Your openmindedness is really going to help you grow today -- and help others grow too.
Today is going to be a very good day for you, especially if you are about to start a new venture or professional relationship with someone. The lessons you have learned from past mistakes are going to come in handy -- and they’re going to ensure that you reach a much higher level of success this time! Enjoy the fun that this day may bring.
PAHALANG
There will be good atmosphere at work. Your motivations and personal ambitions become more elevated and idealistic now. You are able to see your work in better perspective. Whatever business you have to tend to it is worth ensuring the accuracy of the information you have to go on.
Your energy level and your self-confidence are high now. You will be able to make the day successful at work with efforts. You can at least use the time right now to have the others get used to the idea you’re proposing
You will feel inspired to make major changes, but instead of diving in head first it would be wise to use this time for preparation. There are joys and gifts all over the place -- you just need to open up your eyes and see them. You will find happiness in personal life.
When you require more “life lessons” in a certain area, you will experience a strong emotional connection to a person or thing. This is the time to be curious and open to what this person can teach you. You can be charming and charismatic when it comes to getting your way and if you are in need of support you can certainly get it.
New tastes and experiences are easy to come upon and, once tried, may stick with you for a longtime. Slow down with your business pursuits, Scorpio, and rebalance your life. Make a concerted effort to squeeze in some relaxation time into your schedule. Your body, mind and career will thank you for it.
It’s time to get real and admit that there are certain things that are beyond your control. Today, just get a fix on what you can accomplish -- and ignore the rest. In a way, you will be giving yourself a road map to follow, and it won’t steer you wrong. Be firm in your convictions and do what is in your own best interests.
The gathering of knowledge is a lifelong process that can lead to greater fulfillment and success. Some nervous tension and strain can be expected today but considerable success will be achieved if you base your decisions on practical thinking. So lighten up and feel free to even make a few jokes about your situation.
Take a few moments to enjoy the accomplishments you’ve experienced and evaluate your dreams for the future. Reflect on what you’ve been able to do so far in your life. You are both mentally and physically strong today so be sure to take advantage of it.
If there is someone you have wanted to reach out to, doing so now is likely to create strong feelings between you, and may be the start of something beautiful. You have a strong critical eye right now, which makes you excellent for detecting foul play or hot air. Use this valuable skill today to make sure that no one you love is being taken advantage of.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Ron Cantiveros Photo by AJ Marcelino
Will the real Winnipeg Jets please stand up? Will the real Winnipeg Jets please stand up? It's amazing how time flies during the shortened NHL season this year and on every night the Jets play, fans are never sure which team is going to show up. It also seems that we’ve lost our home team advantage and a complete reversal from last
year’s home game domination. Since their 3-game home stand in mid-February, the Jets have been horrible at the MTS Centre and was near perfect during their 5-game road trip. Three losses against the Flyers, Penguins and Bruins at MTS Centre were unacceptable and the fans at those games were not
impressed with the Jets lack lustre performance. Fearing the worst, the Jet take off on a 5-game road trip and win against the Sabres, Hurricanes, Devils and the Rangers. The win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden was the first win by a Jets team since 1991. The one road loss against the Philadelphia Flyers was a tough game to lose for the Jets. In fact, most of the games against the Flyers have been pretty explosive if you go back to games last season. As Coach Claude Noel put it, "It was a pretty tough game for us, disappointing to say the least." Back at the MTS Centre at the end of February, the Jets grind out a big win against the Devils that saw an end-to-end rush by

Dustin Byfuglien that resulted in the game winning goal. Coach Noel commented during the post-game interview, "Buff decided that we were not going to go to overtime. Did you see him skate? He looked like a stallion out there, he was movin'." In the game against the struggling Washington Capitals, the Jets barely showed up to the game and didn't register a goal. The Capitals 3-0 win was Branden Holtby’s third shutout of the season and the first time that the Jets have failed to score at goal.
Bogosian is back, Enstrom is out Zach Bogosian made his return to the Jets lineup with his season debut during the Pittsburgh Penguins’ game back on February 15th after recovering from an off-season wrist surgery. As soon as Bogosian returned, the Jets defence was hit with another injury in the same game against the Penguins. Tobias Enstrom is out for a couple weeks due to an upper body injury and had to get an MRI on his right shoulder.

Simple Strategies for Speaking Success
W
By Ray Mutuc Advisor with Randy Viray Financial Services Inc.
e were fortunate to have Deri Latimer speak at our event about “Presence On The Platform: Simple Strategies For Speaking Success.” Deri covered the fears involved when it comes to public speaking and how to overcome them. Giving us the phrase “I don’t need to die, it’s as easy as pie!” Pie being the acronym for Purposeful, Inspiring, and Engaging. She equipped us with different components and ingredients to have a successful speaking engagement. As mentioned earlier people would rather face death than to speak in public. According to the acronym P.I.E. P was for being purposeful. Deri asked
the audience “what is your purpse?” and to be clear about it. I was for Inspiring. Share your accomplishments and to be inspired about what you’re speaking about. E was for engaging, by being interactive with the audience and getting close to people. Deri’s purpose is to move people from the grave to pie hence the phrase “I don’t need to die, it’s as easy as pie!” During the presentation Deri gave us some key tips and ingredients to successful presentations. She covered the thoughts inside our minds before arriving at an event. Deri said our thoughts lead to how we feel and how we behave. Meaning what
you expect is what you create. We should always come in with a positive mental attitude creating the atmosphere we expect. Body language also plays a key role. Deri said our communication is 93% non-verbal and 7% verbal. She says to maintain eye contact, use hand gestures, and control your tone of voice. Also to always be approachable. Some of many key take aways that Deri taught us. Deri was a huge treat to have at the MFBC meeting. Great value added to what we get as MFBC members and business owners. If you missed this one, you won’t want to miss the next MFBC event. Jonas Cacatian and Ian Cansino of Maple Creek Custom Screen Printing

The DOT observed a significant increase in recreation and travel activities notably among young professionals and middle-income families, which can be attributed to the country’s improved economy. Among the top destinations for domestic tourists are Boracay, Cebu, Bohol, Davao, and Puerto Princesa. Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) chief operating officer Domingo Enerio III added that
