Checking Out a Rental Home or Apartment
O
ne of the first things most newcomers have to do when they arrive in Canada is find a place to live. Many newcomers find that it can be a good idea to rent their first home. Renting gives you a safe and comfortable place to begin to build your new life in your adopted country. Plus, renting can give you the time to look for a place you might want to buy, without feeling pressured into making a quick decision. To help you find a place that fits your needs and budget, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) offers the following tips on what to look for when checking out a rental home or apartment:
â—?Ask how the heat works. This is especially important for basement apartments, which can sometimes be colder than above-ground apartments. â—?If the place you are looking at is in an apartment building, find out if there are any common areas you will be sharing with other people who live in the building. These could include a shared laundry room, a pool, an exercise room or a storage area. â—?Ask who is responsible for making repairs, and whether or not the utilities (such as heat, cable or electricity) are included in the rent. If the utilities are not included, find out how much you will have to pay each month to heat and light your home or apartment.
a place to rent can take time. Make sure you look at several different places, and take your time making a decision. After all, the place you choose will be home for you and your family for months or even years to come. Ikinahihiya Mo ba ang Iyong Pagkabata? Or, on a more serious note, exposing certain deeds of theirs from the past might incriminate them or cause them new troubles—especially if the deed was illegal or unlawful or has resulted or can result in something that is better left in secrecy. On the other hand, used-to-beembarrassing and painful moments need not be taken seriously in the present context. Hiding such embarrassing or painful moments in the past simply means that the person hasn’t come to terms yet with the experience. Only after they

have come to terms with all these experiences can they really become at peace with themselves. I too have my share of embarrassing and painful childhood experiences. But as an adult I have finally been able to come to terms with them. I now regard the memories as funny stories. Although I have to admit that there remain some personal experiences that are better left undisclosed. The Real Story behind My BMX Bike BMX bikes were a craze in the Philippines in the early 1980s. In the summer of 1981, I had my first and only BMX bike which, unfortunately, got stolen about one month after the day my mother and I bought it at a bicycle shop in Cartimar, Pasay City. I used to tell friends that the reason I was unable to finish fourth grade at St.
Mary’s Academy in Pasay City and, in the ensuing school year, had to repeat the same grade at the public school near our house in Makati, was because I used my tuition fee to buy the BMX bike without my mom’s consent. This was a lie. I concocted this story because of embarrassment with my parents’ marital problems which had been causing the family severe financial difficulty during the time. In fourth grade I could barely take a periodical examination on time because I was always delayed in paying my quarterly tuition fee. There were many school days when we did not have money for my allowance, causing me to feign sickness on those days, reporting back to class armed with only excuse letters. Subsequently I stopped going to school. I failed to finish the school year because we could no longer afford the remaining tuition fee. In short, I dropped out of school because of poverty. Summertime, when virtually every young kid in the neighborhood had a BMX bike, I was able to persuade my mother in buying me one. I was tired of borrowing bikes from my friends or renting from the rent-a-bike shops that sprouted during the time. Mother and I figured that we could spare some four-hundred pesos for my own bike; anyway, Mom had decided that in the coming school year I’d be transferring to the public school near our house. We wouldn’t be worrying anymore about tuition fees and daily school allowance. One Saturday morning, Mother
and I finally went to Cartimar to buy a red BMX bike. We went back home with the precious bike aboard a taxicab. I barely finished my lunch that day just to be able to tour the neighborhood with my own BMX bike for the first time. Unfortunately, after only more than a month, I woke up one morning to find my bike, which I kept in our garage, missing. My friends and I spent the whole day looking for it in the neighborhood in case someone just decided to play a prank on me. It was nighttime when I acknowledged the fact that my bicycle was indeed stolen. When summer was over, I was a fourth grader for the second time, at Heneral Pio del Pilar Elementary School. And every time I saw my friends on their bikes, I could only frown in sadness and reminisce about my lovely summer days with my bicycle. Luckily, after spending a year at the public school, I was back at my old private school. No more bikes for me; but at least, I was a privileged student once again, studying at a private school. Aunt Mely of Winnipeg (my mom’s sister) offered to support my education, saying that I was too smart to be studying at a public school. Because of embarrassment for having to repeat fourth grade, I began telling my old school friends and new classmates that my having studied at a public school for one year was my punishment for spending my tuition fee on a BMX bike. I stood by with this tall tale for a long time because I felt that
it was a cool story to tell to people. It made me feel cool. And it did! Friends were often impressed with me for having done such a rebellious move. Only when I came to Canada did I have the courage to reveal the real story behind my BMX bike. I attribute the honesty to my having had the chance to spend some time being away from my loved ones and my comfort zone. I had the time to contemplate on my past and to psychoanalyze myself. During my early years in Canada, I was able to come to terms with many painful chapters in my life. And this whole experience had made me a more strong-willed, honest, secure, mindful, and compassionate person. Or, in Simple Words Every individual has his share of embarrassing or sad memories. Every person has the prerogative to keep these experiences as secrets. However, I believe now that a person can experience true peace of mind only when he is all ready to come to terms with the sad and painful parts of his past.

Experience Jordan
- a highlight of the Middle East
O
n beautiful autumn days of October we visited the holy places and local mustsees of the Hashemite Kingdom of JORDAN. The tour was a perfect combination of faith and fun. Jordan with a population of 5.9 million (98% are Arabs) occupying an area of 91,970 sq. kms. (4/5s of the country is desert) is a constitutional monarchy governed by a king (now Abdullah II) as head of the state and government and regarded as the most powerful political and military figure in the country. Amman, named as one of the area’s best cities according to economic, labour, environmental, and socio-cultural factors, is the capital and largest city of Jordan. The official language is Arabic although English is widely spoken. Currency is the dinard. Amman is conveniently located for many Jordanian tourists and most of the country’s places of interest are only about an hour away by bus or car cruising through its modern highways. North of Amman is Jerash nestled in a quiet valley among the Gilead mountains. Jerash is considered as the best preserved Greco-Roman city in the Middle East. Seeing Jerash will transport you 2000 years back with its colonnaded streets, theatres, public squares, baths, and city walls. We experienced BethanyAcross-the-Jordan and
walked through the Baptismal Archaeological Park, the wilderness home of St. John the Baptist, where Jesus was immersed in the baptismal springs of River Jordan. Our baptismal vows were renewed at the sacred river by our tour/director guide Msgr. Jan Majernick of Yugoslavia. Then we visited Mount Nebo, where Moses, the Hebrew liberator who received the “Ten Commandments” stood and saw before him the Promised Land. A stone marker on this Christian holy place stands. Located southwest of Amman is Madaba, the “City of Mosaics”. We entered the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George which houses a precious 6th century map of the Holy Land depicting its hills and valleys, villages and towns. Deep in the Jordanian Valley, southeast of Amman, is the Dead Sea, the lowest body of water and the lowest point on earth and the world’s richest source of natural salts. Due to an extremely high content of salts and minerals which give its waters the curative and therapeutic properties and its bouyancy, the Dead Sea is devoid of life. That’s why it is called DEAD no fish or any acquatic organism can survive in it. We swam and floated on its waters and indulged ourselves in a mineral mud treatment of our bodies. Don’t miss a Jeep tour of the Wadi Rum, home to stunning desert beauty and the place where the

movie “Lawrence of Arabia” was filmed. Known as “Valley of the Moon”, Wadi Rum (wadi in Arabic means valley and rum means high or elevated), is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock offering a wonderful desert scenery of unique geological rock formations. One of “the 40 places you have to see before you die” according to the BBC is the world-famous “rose-red city half as old as time”, PETRA, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Petra which means “rock” in Arabic, located in the biblical land of Moab, was unkown to the western world until 1812 when a Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it. We approached Petra by foot through the “Siq”, the narrow gorge made famous in the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”. After trekking the narrow cleft in the rock for about a mile passing through the rock-cut tombs the Siq suddenly opens upon the most impressive of all Petra’s monuments, the famed Treasury, curved out of solid rock on the side of the mountains and standing over 40 meters (130 ft.) high.

said the series of unrest in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Bahrain prompted the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Labor and Employment to temporarily suspend the deployment of OFWs to these countries. The Vice President also said that OFWs can likewise seek employment in more stable countries in the region such as Qatar which will be hosting the 2022 World Cup football event and thus needs thousands of workers in its preparations. Binay recently visited Qatar and met with that country’s Minister of Social Affairs and Acting Labor Minister Nasser bin Abdulla Al Hamaidi, who expressed his desire to employ more Filipinos in his country.

IMMIGRATION LAW: How Does the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program Assess Applications
T
he Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program is an immigration selection program in which Manitoba selects applicants who have a strong likelihood of becoming successful and permanently established in Manitoba. What happens when an application is filed? When an application arrives at the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program office, the application is date stamped and goes through a pre-screening process. Applications that do not meet the core criteria of the program or are too incomplete will be sent back. If the application is accepted for assessment, it will be randomly assigned to a program officer. A file will be created and a file number will be assigned. How important is the file number?
A file number is key as this number makes it easier for an application to be tracked. It is important that applicants keep a record of the file number once they receive it. How is the application assessed? Manitoba does two assessments of all applications. During the first assessment, a program officer will review the application and provide a recommendation. Once the first assessment is done, a second program officer will review the work of the first officer to make sure all proper policies and procedures were followed. The second officer will be the one who will do further verification of the application including calling any employers who have made a long term job offer or friends or relatives who have offered support.
If both officers agree, a final decision will be made. If there is a disagreement between the first and second assessment, a third program officer will review the file. If an application is refused, the applicant will receive a letter indicating the reasons for the refusal. If the application is approved, a provincial nominee program certificate will be issued and a package will be sent to the uperbike champion Maico applicant. The applicant will Buncio died Sunday after receive instructions to file the suffering serious injuries application with a Canadian visa following a crash a day before during office before the expiry date of in Clark Field, Pampanga. the certificate. Marquez wants Pacquiao, accepts Top Rank contract
T
he third fight between boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and counter puncher Juan Manuel Marquez will take place on Nov. 12 right after the World Series. This was disclosed by Top Rank chief Bob Arum who said the Mexican champion has accepted the revised contract, which states a catchweight of 144 lb, with Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title on the line, and for Marquez to get a guaranteed purse of $5 million, the same purse that was offered Shane Mosley against Pacquiao.

The 37-year-old Marquez, the reigning WBO and WBA lightweight champion, however will have to wait for Golden Boy whether or not it would allow him a third fight with Pacquiao. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer was quoted as saying they might match the offer and hand Marquez a similar $5 million offer to fight super-welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez instead. For his part, Marquez doubts that Alvarez, the champion at 154 lb, may not be able to come down to 144 lb as the Top Rank offer states.

The kleptocrats never left
T
he recently released 2010 Global Integrity Report rated the Philippines “very weak” (57) in terms of governance and corruption. The overall rating was also “very weak,” a downgrade from the 2008 overall rating of “moderate” (71). The report also rates the country “weak” (64) in the category of “Anti-Corruption Legal Framework, Judicial Impartiality and Law Enforcement Professionalism” and “Rule of Law.” Included under this category are the following subcategories: “Anti-Corruption Law,” rated “strong” (89); “Judicial Independence, Fairness, and Citizen Access to Justice,” rated “weak” (62); “AntiCorruption Agency or Equivalent Mechanisms,” rated “very weak” (53); and “Law Enforcement: Conflicts of Interest Safeguards and Professionalism,” rated “very weak” (52). Global Integrity — a Washington, D.C.-based international non-profit organization that tracks governance and corruption trends around the world – rates the categories and sub-categories on a scale of 0 to 100. The 70 countries tracked by Global Integrity are divided into two groups – “even” and “odd” years — of 35 countries each; therefore, each report represents a biennial cycle. The “even year” group includes the Philippines. Since the 2010 Global Integrity Report represents the years 2009 and 2010, it would cover the last 18 months of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s presidency, which ended on June 30, 2010, and the first six months of Benigno Aquino III’s presidency. Indeed, the report is an “indictment” of Arroyo’s nineyear presidency than a reflection of Aquino’s fledgling administration. However, this will not absolve Aquino of culpability because, ultimately, the buck stops with him. Double whammy So, what is the report telling us? It is evident that the country has “strong” anti-corruption laws – and there is no doubt about it — but the government is “very weak” in enforcing them and “weak” in prosecuting the corrupt. But Aquino claimed that his administration was stymied by the Office of the Ombudsman’s inability – or refusal – to prosecute corrupt officials, putting the blame squarely on former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, who resigned last May 6, 2011 to avoid a Senate impeachment trial. Now that Gutierrez is gone, Aquino doesn’t have any more excuses. He needs to jumpstart his anticorruption crusade and fulfill
his election promise, “Walang corrupt, walang mahirap” (No corruption, no poverty). And the sooner he appoints an honest and incorruptible Ombudsman, the better off he would be. Arroyo years In my article, “Reign of the Kleptocrats” (Global Balita, January 19, 2007), I wrote: “What we used to know as ‘good governance’ is now transformed into ‘kleptocracy.’ The public service-oriented government functionaries of yesteryears are gone. Although there are still those in government who are honest and incorruptible, what we have today is a breed of greedy opportunists who use their positions in government to enrich themselves. They are the ‘kleptocrats.’ ” Indeed, things didn’t change much since Arroyo came to power in a sham people power revolution – EDSA 2 – in 2001. Arroyo’s ascension effectively stopped the momentum and progress made after the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos was ousted in the people power revolution of 1986. Sadly, the first documented case of corruption occurred within four days of her administration. And what is very sad is that the government’s attempt to resolve or recover the sequestered assets and properties — including billions secretly stashed in foreign banks — failed only because the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) didn’t do a good job. Allegations of corruption, bribery, collusion, thievery, and ineptitude hounded PCGG to this day. Corruption galore! Just a few days ago, it was reported in the news that the new head of PCGG, Juan Andres Bautista, questioned his predecessor Camilo Sabio’s sale of a sequestered 3.6-hectare property owned by IBC-13 for a cheap price. Another questionable transaction made during Sabio’s time was the anomalous sale of a sequestered company and its P4.2-billion property – with a fair market value of more than P6 billion – for only P900 million. Bautista also questioned the sale of a 12.3-hectare prime lot in Pasig City for a measly P89 million in which he alleged that another PCGG commissioner, Peter Sabido, pocketed P20 million in “commission.” Bautista also questioned Sabido’s misuse of government funds, saying he hired six private lawyers, 41 consultants and 85 office-based staff. It’s interesting to note that a Manila Bulletin article written by Edmer F. Panesa dated March 21, 2010, said: “The Supreme
Court (SC) recently lifted the sequestration by the government of a 7,000-hectare cattle farm on Busuanga Island in Palawan believed to be owned by the late strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos. Considered one of the largest cattle stations in Asia, the Busuanga cattle farm was originally known as the Yulo King Ranch (YKR) controlled by suspected Marcos cronies Peter Sabido and Luis Yulo.” The question is: Was the suspected Marcos crony Peter Sabido the same person as PCGG Commissioner Peter Sabido? If so, that would be like appointing Mafia Don Vito Corleone to be Attorney General. Another high-profile corruption case is that of former Rep. Prospero Pichay who was appointed by Arroyo as chairman of the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) after he lost his senatorial bid in 2007. Last month, the government filed a criminal complaint against Pichay and all the LWUA board members for LWUA’s questionable acquisition of a thrift bank in 2008, in which the government lost P480 million in the deal. But the “circle of kleptocrats” was not the exclusive domain of those identified with Arroyo. Many of Arroyo’s former appointees managed to pass through Aquino’s vetting process and got appointed to plum positions. One of them is Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz. Former Solicitor General Francisco Chavez included her among those who were charged with Arroyo in regard to the alleged misuse of P551-million worth of funds from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). According to Chavez, Arroyo violated the Plunder Law for allegedly misusing OWWA funds for questionable
Filipino Journal
acquisitions and for her reelection campaign in 2004. Baldoz was then the chairman of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and was one of the signatories of the OWWA board resolution allowing the transfer of funds. Tip of the iceberg It did not come as a surprise then that the Philippines is rated “very weak” in governance and corruption. With almost 1,000 midnight appointments made by Arroyo and many more in fixedterm plum positions, the incoming Ombudsman will have work cut out for him or her. Many kleptocrats are still in government, alive and kicking… and continue to steal
9
money from whatever they could put their kleptic hands on. Indeed, the kleptocrats never left. If Aquino is truly sincere in fighting corruption and eradicating poverty, he has now a grand opportunity to rid the government of kleptocrats. It will be a daunting challenge for him; however, it is doable. The last thing he wants to happen is to fail without trying. But he should know that doing nothing is worse than failure in itself. For even in failure there is much to learn… and achieve, as well. With Gutierrez out, it’s time for Aquino to walk the talk lest he would come to be known as “NATO” – that is, “No Action, Talk Only.”

GMA Network continues nationwide dominance in TV ratings
G
MA Network, Inc. maintains its foothold in national ratings amid aggressive competition from other broadcast networks, based on figures from the most widely accepted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. Based on household data surveyed in National Urban Philippines from April 1 to April 30 (with 24 to 30 based on overnight readings), GMA garnered 33.2 household audience share points, higher than ABS-CBN’s 31.3 and TV5’s 14.8. The Kapuso Network also dominated the list of overall top 30 programs in National Urban Philippines with 20 entries, topped by the Philippine TV premiere of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes’ movie “You To Me Are Everything”, which scored a household rating of 34.0 points. In Urban Luzon, which comprises 77 percent of total television households nationwide, GMA’s lead over competing networks remained at double digit levels. The Kapuso Network sustained its strong ratings performance in the said area with 36.8 share points, 10.4 points ahead of ABS-CBN’s 26.4; and 20.6 points ahead of TV5’s 16.2. In viewer-rich Mega Manila, which covers 58 percent of total television households nationwide, GMA garnered 37.6 share points, 12.8 points up from ABS-CBN’s 24.8; and 20.5 points higher than TV5’s 17.1. Nielsen figures also show that among the three networks, GMA was the only channel in Mega Manila that
made a leap in weekday primetime (6:30 to 11pm) this April relative to March. GMA’s audience shares climbed by 2.8 points from 34.1 in March to 36.9 share points in April. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN’s audience shares dropped by 2.0 points from 33.5 in March to 31.5 in April; and TV5’s audience shares fell by 3.4 points from 20.9 in March to 17.5 in April. Furthermore, nationwide ratings data from January 1 to April 30 (with April 24 to 30 based on overnight readings) show that GMA delivered superior performance in audience shares with 33.6 points, up from ABS-CBN’s 31.7 points and from TV5’s 15.1 points. For the same period in Urban Luzon, GMA registered an imposing 37.1 share points, higher than ABSCBN’s 26.7 by 10.4 and TV5’s 16.9 share points by 20.2 points. Year to date figures for Mega Manila show that GMA-7 posted 38.2 audience share points versus ABSCBN’s 25.1 and TV5’s 17.7 for a lead of 13.1 and 20.5 points respectively. GMA President and Chief Operating Officer Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr. said that GMA continues to lead in the ratings, despite the efforts of competition. “We are extremely grateful to the growing number of viewers who subscribe to GMA programs making us number 1 nationwide. We will continue our efforts towards ensuring the delivery of unbiased and relevant news and public affairs programs from our News and Public Affairs Group as well as innovative programs from our

Entertainment TV Group,” Duavit said. This month, GMA-7 will be launching seven new network-produced programs, two Koreanovelas, public affairs specials, and will be airing the year’s most anticipated boxing match. The line-up includes the Koreanovela Secret Garden, Munting Heredera, Blusang Itim, Andres de Saya, Sisid, My Chubby World, Playful Kiss, the Pacquiao-Mosley fight, Ground Zero, Sabadabadog, Blessed: John Paul II, and the grand premiere of GMA-7’s biggest television production to date, Amaya on May 30 (June 1 worldwide). The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA is subscribed by 21 companies including two other local TV networks, namely, TV5 and Solar Entertainment; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 13 advertising agencies, and three regional clients. On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only local network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS. In Mega Manila alone, the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 880 homes as compared to Kantar Media’s 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,005 homes compared to the lower sample size of 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media. The top rating entertainment programs and news and public affairs specials from the Number 1 television station in the Philippines, GMA Network, are seen worldwide via GMA Pinoy TV, its flagship international channel.

Mommy Dionisia celebrates with dazzling birthday party
T
he mother of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao received a lot of gifts from guests who trooped to her 62nd birthday bash last Sunday in General Santos City. Dionisia Pacquiao, aka Mommy D, even had four wardrobe changes during her glittering birthday celebration. First she donned a blue Disney Princess-inspired dress during the Mass for the blessing of the new Pacquiao Gym. Next was a brown gown a la “Rosalinda,” which she wore for a tango dance number, then changed into a bright red gown to sing Imelda Papin’s “Kung Liligaya Ka sa Piling ng Iba”. Mommy D then danced the night away wearing a sleeveless aquamarine gown.
The Pacmom also received the gift that she personally requested from the boxing champ and his wife Jinkee, a Hermes Birkin bag costing P1-million. Former President Joseph Estrada and wife Senator Loi Estrada in turn gifted her an orange silk scarf, also by Hermes. Other prized gifts that she received were a red and green rosary made of Swarovski crystals, necklace, sandals, clothes, blue gown, white gold tongs, and lots of dancing shoes. Notwithstanding the gifts galore, Mommy D revealed that her ardent wish is for her son to retire from boxing soon.
Angel Locsin admits she’s excited to fall in love anew
P
retty actress Angel Locsin disclosed that she is thrilled to fall in love again as she confirmed that she and Azkals striker Phil Younghusband are on a dating status. This comes afterYounghusband said in an earlier interview that he and Locsin are “exclusively dating.” However, the star of the latest blockbuster “In The Name of Love” quickly denied rumors that they are already a couple as she reiterated that it’s still too early for the two of them to be in a relationship. The actress also clarified that she only entertains suitors one at a
time in order to get to know them better. Recently, TV host Charlene Gonzales presented Locsin with four gifts from the football player when she guested in “The Buzz” The gifts consisting of a card, a tumbler, a pillow and a teddy bear, with attached sweet messages from Younghusband visibly surprised the actress. She revealed that it’s the first time anyone did such a thing for her and admitted she deeply appreciates the gestures of thoughtfulness being shown towards her by the football star.
Pia Guanio getting married
T
V host Pia Guanio will be marrying businessman Steve Mago soon. Mago, a car dealer, has formally asked for her hand in marriage on May 8 during the “pamamanhikan” held at the home of Guanio’s parents at the Royal Estates in Tagaytay City where only immediate family members were present. According to a source close to Guanio, she ended her
five-year relationship with “Eat Bulaga” co-host Vic Sotto due to differences in opinions. She reportedly met her nonshow biz fiancé at a party. Broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez will be one of the principal sponsors for the undated “beach wedding.” Enriquez said he had met Mago only once when he and his wife had dinner and cocktails with the new couple.

Manny Pacquiao punches way to greatness
by Rod Escobar Cantiveros
A
nother fight, another victory. Millions of Filipinos all over the world cheered for the greatest Filipino boxer named Manny Pacquiao as he passionately gave his all to beat veteran fighter Sugar Shane Mosley last May 7th in Las Vegas. If there was a national prestigious newsmagazine, like Time or Newsweek, in the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao would be the Man of the Year 2011 for his effort of building a good image for Filipinos abroad and his fight to help eradicate poverty in the Philippines. He is an inspiration for everyone who wants their dreams realized. Pacman use his success as a medium of helping others. Before the fight against Mosley, Pacquiao said, “Boxing in the ring is not the greatest fight I have to fight, but my greatest fight is the eradication of poverty in my country, the Philippines.” Such a tough and yet a doable ambition. And Pacquiao has the passion for helping others. His ring occupies the more than 7,100 islands. And the fight will be relentless! And being the only billionaire among the members of the House of Representatives, Manny has the trust and confidence of the people. As one of the placards inside MGM Grand says: “Manny Pacquiao for President in 2016!” Since his arrival in Las Vegas, Manny Pacquiao created so much interest. Filipinos from all over the world flocked to Las Vegas for the fight, like the couple I met from Australia, Alberta Filipino Journal associate publisher Jun Angeles and his wife Hermie and their friends, and the Manny Pacquiao lookalike Abenojar. From Winnipeg, besides myself, my sons Ron and John and John’s girlfriend, Jenna; Randy Viray and his group and CKJS Radio’s Chester Pangan with two lucky listeners who won the Vickar Autogroup Inc. raffle. The Philippines’ Vice President Jejomar Binay was also there and other boxing and government officials. Pacquiao souveneirs were being sold everywhere. We joined the sea of fans heading to the MGM Grand Garden (known to pundits as “gladiator’s arena.” Expect some blood, I surmised. “It would be a knockout!” some said. “No, Mosley has not been knockedout...wanna bet?” others challenged. While seating on the Grand MGM Grand Garden and surrounded by different individuals I could hear many good comments about Manny Pacquiao. Two guys were talking behind me saying, “I learned that Manny is a congressman in the Philippines and he has been giving money to charity,” an American looking person says to his pal. “I heard that this guy was poor and now a millionaire. He is helping other people. He is good and I like him, good for the Philippines,” his friend adds. Pre-fights did not dampen our enthusiasm as people started gathering for Paquiao and Mosley fight. One person said: “In the 5th round, Mosley will be finished! I said: “8th round, tko!” We were asking for blood! Thundering claps punctured the silence most of the time. “Where are the gladiators?” “Manny! Manny! Manny! unison they shouted. First came Shane Mosley; and when
Paquiao appeared, pandemonuim ensued. “Manny! Manny! Manny!in unison they shouted and some fans raised the Philippine Flag; others wrapped it around their bodies. With so much patriotism left, I joined the singing of the Philippine National Anthem on top of my voice as I competed with Charice’s voice. I was so proud to be there, being with more than 16,412 fans. And in this American soil, I could feel I am just a kababayan who looks beyond Pacquiao’s triumph from poverty and hardship. To me, he is a symbol of hope and faith and hardwork. I think my seatmates identified me as a bonafide Pinoy (before the game, an American man bowed and greeted me a Chinese hello.) After the Philippine National Anthem, Manny! Mannny! Manny! in unison the fans shouted. I did some shouting myself. And nobody would like to seat down and relax. So much tension was shown by the audience. And so much for Paquiao and Mosley. Round 1 and the fight begun. And Manny’s yellow colored gloves ( a symbol of the country, kulay Cory) started to ignite a good fight. TKO him at the 3rd round! Hit and miss for Paquiao’s yellow jab! Shane moved and made his foot worked on the backward stride. Round 2 seemed the same tempo. Pacquiao tried to find the best opportunity. And in the 3rd Round, Shane Mosley fell with Pacquiao’s left hand connection! and the MGM fans roared like a lion! Pacquiao’s pound by pound! Fans wanted blood! And succeeding rounds had become a rehearsal for “Dancing with the Stars” episdoe. Fans booed for Mosley. Manny’s fans shouted: Manny! Manny! Manny! Touching gloves between the two fighthers who would receive an equal payment of $20 million apiece. The fight to most was sound booring! No action! No blood! “Hey man, we need blood!” Modern gladiators do not shed too much blood, i suppose. Mosley fell again in the 8th round... thought of TKO! Fight begun again in a loose fashion...hitting one’s glove. Pacquiao and Mosley moved according to the tempo of their likings, not the fans’ wanted to see. And ouch! Manny fell in the 10th round. Fans stood up and there was a quiet moment...what happened? KO for Manny? Oh, No? Yes, it was a wake up call for Manny! He stood up a warrior! And he started his usual hitting pattern. And on the 11th, some of my seatmates, probably, Mosley’s fans started leaving the MGM theatre arena. They knew that Pacquiao is the winner of the most boring fight. Booes and shouts punctured the expected KO by Manny. In the 11th round, same tempo and the 12th round ended with a whimper! The proclamation and the awarding seemed an ordinary boxing bout! Yes, because, fans wanted blood! And thru the shedding of blood, adrenalin overshoots up into the air. Manny Paquiao won by a unanimous decision. He dominated the former five-time champion Shane Mosley with his brilliant moves while maintaining his distance defensively. “I just fought the best fighter in the world,” Mosley said.
flag waved along his presence to the crowd. The Pinoys fans were satisfied and happy. One Pinoy said: “Wala ngang TKO, pero basag naman ang laman ng bungo ni Mosley...wala sa kalingkinan si Mosley...kaya,” and he shouted: “Manny! Manny! Manny, the champion!” We left MGM Grand Garden satisfied and joined the sea of people getting out from the garden. Some people were waiting at the lobby expecting that Manny might come and greet his fans. We we were carried away by the sea of men walking slowly to the casino. And always in my mind, every beginning of the round, Manny makes a sign of the cross. What a devout Catholic he is! I am inspired by his devotion! And the morning after, the headlines of the papers greeted my eyes: “Paquiao: WBO welterweight champion fights through leg cramp.””Pacquiao picks apart Mosley.” “Yaaaaaawn! Pacquiao gives Mosley, paying public late wake-up call.” “Pound for pound king too fast, too strong for former five-time champ!” Expecting more blood? Watch Marquez and Pacquiao’s third fight in November. Mabuhay ka, Manny Pacquiao!
Manny climbed the ropes and gestured willingly to the waiting fans mostly Filipinos. The Philippine

Pacman and Paris Hilton
fter Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s post-fight press conference last May 7, 2011, my investigative reporter approached Pacman as he and his party were leaving the conference room. His wife, Jinkee, and Hollywood actress and hotel heiress Paris Hilton were with him. “Hey, Pacman! Remember me? I interviewed you last year,” said James. “Oh, yeah, you’re that Jaime quack quack reporter from Global Balita, right?” replied Pacman. “That’s me, except that my name is James Macaquecquec,” said James. “Same thing, same thing,” replied Pacman, “Do you want to interview me again?”
“Absolutely! Can we all sit around a table? I’d like to interview all of you if that’s okay?” James asked. “Okey with me,” said Pacman. They all sat around a table. James: First of all, I want to congratulate you on your victory, Pacman! That’s your tenth straight championship win, right? Pacman: Correction! That was my dozen championship victory! James: You mean… uh… twelfth championship victory, correct? Pacman: Same thing, same thing. James: Jinkee, you must be very happy with Manny’s victory. Jinkee: I’m one billion happier! Just kidding. Hi hi hi…
Paris: I’d be a billion happier too if I were married to Manny. He he he… Jinkee: Hoy, Paris, be careful with what you say! People might think you’re having an affair with my husband. Paris: No need to be jealous of me, Jinkee dear. Manny and I are just friends. Pacman: Paris is right, mahal. Our friendship is just atomic. Jinkee: Atomic! Hoy, what do you mean by “atomic,” ha? Loko! James: I think what Pacman meant was “platonic,” right, Pacman? Pacman: Same thing, same thing. Paris: Yes, Jinkee, it’s just platonic, okay? Jinkee: Ikaw kasi, mahal! Paatomic atomic ka pa dyan! Babatukan kita, sige ka. Pacman: Aray! Huwag naman, baka ma-knock out mo ako, mahal. He he he… Jinkee: Pwe! Pa-mahal mahal ka pa dyan. Manigas ka! Paris: Guys, I don’t understand a word you’re saying. Can we speak in English, please? James: Yes, Paris is right. Let’s get back to normal, okay? I have a question for you, Paris. What got you interested in boxing?
Paris: Well, when I was a young girl I used to hang out with the boys in my neighborhood. They taught me how to box. I never lost interest in boxing since. I’ve been to all of Manny’s dozen championship victories. Pacman: It’s twelve, not dozen. Paris: Same thing, same thing. James: Hey, you’re even beginning to talk like Pacman, Paris! That’s amazing! Jinkee: Hmm… I don’t like that. James: I’m sorry, Jinkee. I didn’t mean it that way. Okay, okay, let’s move on. What’s your secret, Pacman? You seem to have “lady luck” with you all the time. Jinkee: Huh? So Paris is his “lady luck,” ha? James: Oh no! That’s just an idiomatic expression, Jinkee. Jinkee: Who’s an idiot? James: Idiot? No, no, no! I said, idiomatic. It means… uh… Paris: Jinkee, you are Manny’s “lady luck,” not me. You bring him luck, that’s what “lady luck” means. Pacman: Paris is right, mahal. You’re my “lady luck.” James: Oh, how sweet. It seems like you both have good karma. Right, Pacman? Pacman: Well, not really. I read Karma Sutra and I find the pictures funny. I prefer what priests do, you know… missionary position. He he he… James: Karma Sutra! Priests! Missionary position! Now, you really make me laugh, Pacman! Ha ha ha… Oh, my stomach hurts. Ha ha ha… I can’t… ha ha… breathe…

Pacman: Stop it! What’s wrong with what I said? Paris: The book is called Kama Sutra, not Karma Sutra, hon. Pacman: Same thing, same thing. Jinkee: Hon? Hmm… I have read Kama Sutra, too! Hoy, what’s going on between you Paris? I bet you’re looking at the Kama Sutra pictures together, ha? Paris: Jinkee, I love both of you. Jinkee: You love us both??? What is this – a love triangle? Maloko kang talaga ano? James: I think what Paris meant was that she loves you both as friends, Jinkee. Pacman: Mahal, we’re plutonic friends only. James: It’s pla-tonic, Pacman. Not plu-tonic. Pacman: Same thing, same thing. Paris: I gotta run. I’ll text you guys later, okay? Pacman: Yeah, Paris, I look forward to your teks? Paris: Okey honey, I’ll teks you when I’m in Rome. Maybe you can join me for a Roman holiday, okey dokey? Pacman: Okey donkey, honey. He he he… Jinkee: Huh? Roman holiday? Walang hiya kayong dalawa, pahoney honey pa kayo! Paris: I mean the three of us, Jinkee. Jinkee: The three of us? Aba, gusto mo threesome pa? Patyun kita dira! James: Run, Paris, run for your life! She’s gonna kill you! Paris: Aw, shucks!

Geoff the Klezmer Clown and Bard (On Geoff Berner and Klezmer Music)
I
arrived in Canada, specifically in British Columbia, in 2003; and being a passionate music enthusiast with Alternative Rock being my favorite, one of the first activities I engaged in was to check out on the Internet Alternative Rock artists that hail from British Columbia. One of such artists whom I first chanced upon on a blogsite was the Canadian singersongwriter and accordionist Geoff Berner. I didn’t know what genre Berner’s music was, but after I heard his songs, particularly “Clown and Bard” and “Maginot Line,” I immediately felt that his music has Postpunk sensibilities and the idealism of early’80s Folk. The Irish band The Boomtown Rats (“I Don’t Like Mondays,” 1979) and the English Folk Punk artist Billy Bragg (“Greetings to the New Brunette,” 1986) came to mind the first time
I heard Berner’s songs. However, Berner’s use of the accordion and a flavor in his music which was new to me caused me to research more about him. Then did I learn that his music was deeply rooted in klezmer. Klezmer Music Klezmer is a Jewish musical tradition which originated from Eastern Europe. It consists largely of dance tunes and instrumental pieces intended for weddings and other customary celebrations. In the United States, klezmer developed between 1880 and 1924, the period when there was a surge of Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants. Rooted in Folk, klezmer music usually employed acoustic instruments like the banjo, mandolin, accordion, violin, clarinet, and trumpet. Typical klezmer songs feature the
plucked string instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin) chiefly as the rhythm instrument; melodies are often rendered by the violin, clarinet, and trumpet. Almost always, the dominant instrument is the accordion, which gives them a folksy folky and gypsy sound. Introducing Berner the Clown and Bard Geoff Berner may be described appropriately as a clown and a bard because of his insightful humor and politically charged lyrics as well as lively, engaging, and often controversial live performances. He is what we may describe as a protest artist— in the same league as Bob Dylan and Billy Bragg. His vocals and accordion is usually accompanied with violin and percussion on the albums and during live shows. In his youth, Berner studied the piano; but he has eventually turned to the accordion and explored the roots of klezmer music especially when he began touring Eastern Europe in the mid2000s as a solo artist (particularly Romania, one of the origins of klezmer music). His music career started in the 1990s as the frontman of a Punk band known as Terror of Tiny Town. Soon after, he went solo and in 2000 released his first EP, entitled Light Enough to Travel. He released his first full-length album in 2003, We Shall Not Flag or Fail, We Shall Go On to the End, which contains his most popular songs, “Clown and Bard,” “Maginot Line,” “Iron Grey,” “Volcano God,” and “We All Gotta Be a Prostitute Sometimes.” This album was followed by Whiskey Rabbi (2005), Wedding Dance of the Widow Bride (2007), Klezmer Mongrels (2008), and Victory Party (2011). Berner’s other equally provocative songs include “The Way that Girls Drink Beer,” “Song Written in a Romanian Hospital,” “Weep, Bride, Weep,” “Half German Girlfriend,” and “Rabbi Berner Finally Reveals His True Religious Agenda.” You may check out the music of Geoff Berner and purchase copies of his CDs via his Website, www.geoffberner.com. Despite Berner’s relative obscurity, a number of his songs have been covered by other artists,
most known of which is “Light Enough to Travel,” as rendered by the Canadian Alternative Country group The Be Good Tanyas. Meeting the Bard, Finally! I have been meaning to watch Berner in one of his concerts since 2003; gladly, I was able finally to catch his recent Winnipeg concert, on April 20, 2011, at West End Cultural Centre. Prior to the show, I contacted him on Facebook, reminding him of our brief correspondence back in 2003 when I was still in British Columbia and telling him that I would love to watch his show in Winnipeg, where I now live, and

feature him in my music column in Filipino Journal. He said he remembered me! He said I and a companion would be on the show’s guest list. Final Note During the show, Charina and I got to chat with Berner; we had some photographs taken; Berner gave us a CD copy of his latest album; and most of all, he thanked me onstage for requesting his classic song “Clown and Bard”— my favorite—which he dedicated to me before performing it. After the song, the loudest applause obviously came from our table.

The Weigh In by Big Marv @BigMarvShow
Lay & Pray – Go Away
A
pril 9, 2005. The Finale of Spike TV’s hit new reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. Forrest Griffin won a unanimous decision against Stephen Bonnar to become the Light Heavyweight Champion of the show. It was a back and forth slug fest. Two men, going toe to toe, winner getting a six figure UFC contract. If the season opened the world’s eyes to the UFC, then the excitement of this fight got them hooked.
May 20 - June 5, 2011
The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
Looking back, what if Griffin and Bonnar never stood in the pocket and fired at will. What if, for three rounds, Forest Griffin took Bonnar down, and laid on top of him, keeping position. For one, it would be a BORING fight. Secondly, and more importantly, this fight would never be as talked about as it is. Far too often, the UFC pits wrestler against striker with snooze inflicting results. It is the perfect match up for what’s been called “Lay & Pray”. Taking
their opponent down, laying on them and praying for a decision win. I fully understand that it is well within the unified rules of mixed martial arts. However, I believe fans will lose interest if they’re saddled with boring decision after boring decision. Here are Five Rules that can be implemented to bring the excitement back to the sport that hooked us. 1) Yellow Cards. The now defunct Japanese organization, PRIDE, would issue yellow cards due to inactivity. Each yellow card was a 10% deduction of that fighter’s purse. 2) 15 Second Reset Count. If a referee feels that the fighter
in control is not advancing, or trying to do damage, then he starts a count to 15. If he reaches the end of the count, and nothing has change, he resets both fighters to a standing position. 3) Larger Win Bonuses. On the Ultimate Fighter, those who finish their opponent get a bonus $5000. Those who go to decision, don’t receive any bonus. This is something that should be used outside of the reality show. 4) Control vs Stalling. When judging a fight, put less emphasis on “octagon control” and start leaning negatively towards “stalling”. So if a round is basically one guy laying on top of the other, then instead of giving
him the round, make it an even round 5) No Contest. This is my most controversial rule. If a fighter is leaning on his opponent against the cage or laying on top of his opponent, despite warnings. Then at the end of the fight, call it a “No Contest” Neither fighter earns a win bonus. But hopefully will fight more effectively next time. In reality, I think the rules I’ve stated here border on the outlandish, but when you take the excitement out of the sport, you lose your audience. Just ask boxing. For far too many people, if Manny Pacquiao’s not fighting, they don’t care about the fight. I’d hate to see that happen to the UFC.
