Squirrels sneak silently on the shaded streets Crows and gulls cackle in glee Cirrostratus clouds splendid in their clarity by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

Finally, Spr!ng…in Manitoba

F

or many people at least here in Manitoba, Spring seems to be their favorite season—both in the literal and figurative sense. Literally, Spring means the weather is not very cold anymore compared with the frigid Winter; and figuratively, since that this season is associated also with the blossoming of flowers, the greening of plants, and the sprouting of the leaves of trees, Spring has come to symbolize hope, new life, and positive anticipation. Back in 2004, my first year in Canada, when I was doing practically nothing but take care of my late maternal grandfather, I spent much of my evenings and late nights listening to music and writing poetry. I was in Surrey, British Columbia, when I experienced my first Spring in Canada. And I was able to capture in many poems my feelings about it, especially that I was

really looking forward to it after my first experience of snowy Winter, which had excited me but which had caused also many inconveniences. While I write poetry using freeform, I prefer writing poems that follow strict rudiments. For, the mark of a true poet is someone who could weave words and verses into a specific structure bounded by measures, lines, and rhymes. Without further ado, here is one poem about Spring that I wrote in March 2004. It is in a sonnet form, a type of poetry that commonly contains 14 lines and traditionally follows a strict rhyme scheme and specific structure.

in the first syllables of a series of words or phrases—as in, “gardens are gaudy; grasses are green,” “squirrels sneak silently,” “people are friendly; pets are frisky,” and “first of floral feasts and frolic and No more scarves nor bonnets nor fun.” Also, I used a line/stanza mitts No more worries about snow ice and slips Tree trunks, barks, and branches are browner Lustrous leafs, shimmery as if chandeliers People are friendly; pets are frisky Songs are cheerful; chores are simple Winter is gone; Spring has come The first of floral feasts and frolic and fun O Spring! A sunny season anew in Surrey, the city where I stay The Last Leaf In the sonnet above, I liberally used a figure of speech known as alliteration, which refers to the repetition of a particular sound

Ode to Spring (In Surrey) O Sun! A star ablaze on the sacred sky Gardens are gaudy; grasses are green on the glorious ground

scheme of 2-3-2-4-2-1 and a rhyme scheme of a-b-c-d-d-e-f-gg-d-h-i-j-k. And while writing this poem, I was listening in repeat mode to the song “Braveheart” (1999) by the British Indie Pop band Vermont Sugar House.

Shall We Emulate Germany?

B

ack in 1975, I was invited by Professor Erhard Meister (RIP) of the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in West Germany to spend a year there to give lectures, do mathematical research and to assist him in supervising a student’s doctoral thesis. I took a sabbatical leave from the University of Regina and brought my whole family there to taste the European life and for me to expand my professional horizon. I have always been an admirer of Germany despite the two debacles brought about by German leaders, namely, Kaiser Wilhelm who lost World War I in 1918 and Adolf Hitler who lost World War II in 1945. Our one year stay in Europe was most exhilarating and educational. Besides getting the children into German schools we had many side trips around Germany and Europe including Rome, Paris, London, Innsbruck, and Edinburgh. We learned to know more of the German people. They are serious, hard-working, intelligent, and have a great sense of humor, especially after a pint or two of German Pilsner. When the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989 and Germany was reunified, I was thoroughly impressed by the wisdom and compassion of the German people towards each other. To date, Germany has poured nearly $2 trillion in rebuilding East Germany neglected by the communists. (I remember in 1975 when I was invited to give a lecture at the University of Berlin, I had to drive through East Germany to get to Berlin and we noted the desolate treeless landscape we went through on unmaintained dusty roads for two hours.) Next time you have a chance to go to Europe, visit the eastern part of Germany and see the new autobahns, railways, stadia, landscaping and new housing developments.

But Germany also looks outward as trillions and trillions of Euros are borrowed from the German government and banks by countries especially in the south such as Greece, Spain and Portugal. And to think that these countries were on the winning Allied side and not decimated and defeated as Germany was in 1945. So much is coming from Germany to the rest of Europe in terms of money, products and technology that a new term is coined, namely the “Germanization” of Europe. German Chancellor Angela Merkel seems to be achieving without shedding a drop of blood what Wilhelm and Hitler desperately wanted, namely a German Europe. So how did Germany rise from the ashes of WWII and become like the doting uncle/ savior for a bedraggled southern Europe teetering on near bankruptcy? I’d say wise management of their economy, honest government and plain hard work. Countries ridden with corruption including our beloved Philippines under Marcos will take a step forward and two backwards. Basically, it is the love of one’s country more than one’s self that propels a nation’s progress. Shall we emulate Germany? The April 25th issue of Financial Times has a heartening report by David Pilling that the Philippines is moving in the right direction. Essentially, these are what he reported. The Philippines, after years of indebtedness, is a net creditor. Overseas remittances from millions of kababayans working abroad have added nearly $80 billion to our foreign exchange reserves. We are also helping the labor and professional shortages of mature economies such as Canada, the U. S. and European countries. Philippine call-centers have grown exponentially adding billions to our economy, thanks to

our facility with the English language and the computer. The deficit has narrowed down to a manageable 2 per cent. Government spending has been kept in check with subsidies on fuel and power being scrapped. Belt tightening is the order of the day. President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino has made a good start. For one, his government has sent out a strong message that it will not tolerate corruption, a distinct change from past governments which thrived on it. Noynoy has instructed tax collectors to go after evaders including some big names. The tax take has edged up even without necessary tax reform. The Aquino government is also restoring rice self-sufficiency after the country was forced to import a fifth of its needs in 2008. It is also making public-private partnerships to build the roads, railways and power stations that have failed to keep pace with an exploding young population. We are nearly 100 million. To top all of these, many well-established scientists, engineers and other professionals are returning to help in the education and refocusing of our young Filipinos. The Philippine American Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE) is one organization encouraging its members to do so. We are not thinking of “Philippinizing” Asia but it feels good if we can leave the company of have-nots and join the haves. We can borrow a page from Germany’s book of progress.

Budget 2012: Thousands More Youth To Have Access To Successful Role-Model Programs Mentoring Key to Success: Selinger

T

housands more Manitoba youth will have the opportunity to connect with positive role models through new funding announced in Budget 2012 for innovative programs that provide young people with outlets for their creativity and help them gain practical work experience, Premier Selinger announced today. “Every parent wants their child to have the very best opportunities in life. And having the opportunity to learn from a good role model will help our children reach their full potential,” said Selinger. “We are working with exceptional partners in a wide variety of fields to make sure more children have the chance to be inspired, make the most of

their skills and to find out what their true passion is.” Manitoba Mentors connects youth with mentors from businesses, labour and notfor-profit organizations to help them explore career options. The province will provide an additional $255,000 to the program, more than doubling its current funding. During the program’s first year, approximately 950 students benefited from the knowledge shared by employers through the Manitoba Mentors Speakers Bureau, 230 participated in employer group sessions and 70 students were matched with a mentor in their selected career areas. The program is projected to serve more than 1,500 students

by the end of June 2013 and 2,500 students by 2014, the premier said. One of the program’s partners, Manitoba-based business solution firm Protegra Business and Technology Solutions, was recently ranked as one of Canada’s best employers. “Protegra is proud to help youth reach their potential through real life work experience with our employees,” said Wadood Ibrahi, Protegra’s CEO. “Manitoba Mentors’ staff uses Protegra’s Correlate cloud software to help match mentors and students. And now Correlate is used internationally by other youthserving agencies.” The Artists in Schools program will also receive an

additional $200,000. This program brings artists, together with students and teachers through special residencies in schools around the province. In 2010-11, more than 200 Artists in the Schools and ArtsSmarts took place in Winnipeg, rural and northern schools, reaching more than 30,000 students. This new funding will help add up to 100 more residencies and will provide the potential for 10,000 more students, many in rural and northern schools, to access this unique mentorship program, Selinger said.

May 5-20, 2012

“The Manitoba Arts Council is very proud of its Artist in the Schools (AIS) program which brings together the unique vision and energy of artists with the creative potential of students and teachers across the province,” said Judith Flynn, chair, Manitoba Arts Council. “The program changes lives and keeps kids in school. This commitment to the growth and expansion of the AIS program recognizes that imagination is at the heart of innovation and healthy communities.”

ccording to Wikipedia, gossip is idle talk or rumor about the personal or private affairs of others. It is one of the oldest and most common means of sharing facts and views, but it has a bad reputation also for the introduction of errors and variations into the information transmitted. The term refers especially to idle chat or rumor of personal or trivial nature, as opposed to normal conversation.

Just Ignore Gossips but Only to Some Extent As long as you are not doing anything wrong, not harming anyone, and minding only your personal affairs, then you should generally not care about what other people say negatively about you. If a person is gossiping about you—the only people who will enjoy the gossips and will easily believe these are evil persons and fellow gossipmongers anyway? Decent persons would not entertain, feast on, or believe

Or, in Simple Words Never mind small talks, and simply ignore gossipmongers. However, when the gossip is getting malicious and too personal already, you have to take action and deal with this in a professional way by consulting the management or even a legal counsel. This way, you will know your legal options, and you prevent yourself from falling into the trap of retaliating inappropriately, and you help cut the vicious cycle of gossiping. “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

Report Workplace Gossipers Especially when They Go Overboard When the gossip is becoming really serious or malicious—like issues that are non-work-related, family or other personal affairs, marital relationships, or anything that has the potential of ruining a reputation—this is legally unacceptable already. True or not, gossips should not be allowed to continue. If it involves you or someone you care about, then you should help stop it. Winnipeg Strides towards ‘Super-cityhood’

W

here is Winnipeg?— this is perhaps one of the harshest questions that a Winnipegger would possibly hear from an acquaintance who, at least, lives outside of Manitoba or, at most, one who lives outside of Canada. Such question may carry with it the negative undertone that the city is “not famous enough” outside of the Manitoba circle, and that it is far overshadowed by Canada’s “super” cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary. Hence, Winnipeg plays the role of a “lesser” city. Of late years, however, Winnipeg has been taking strides towards joining the rank of Canada’s supercities. Grounded largely on its overwhelming demographic and economic growth, the city of Winnipeg has so far accomplished the following: the return of Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League, the elite status of Blue Bombers in Canadian Football League, the new James Richardson International Airport, the building of the Canadian Human Rights Museum, the new Bombers Stadium (Investor Group Field), an IKEA store, Maple Leaf’s Ham-processing plant, and the forthcoming establishment of a World Trade Center, Hampton Inn at the airport, and, if approved by the city council, a world-

class water park. In addition to that, of course, are the accolades that the city received such as “the most cost-effective city for aerospace manufacturing in the Western United States and Canada (KPMG),” “one of the top-10 best places to live in Canada (Moneysense),” “one of the top10 intelligent communities in the world (Intelligent Community Forum’s Smart21 Communities), and “the lowest cost of electricity of major metro area in the United States and Canada (Hydro Quebec).” In the Economic Development Winnipeg’s latest report, the government agency responsible for promoting and marketing the city for business and promoting tourism, CEO Marina James claimed that “the city’s visitor traffic was up by 7 percent last year and is forecast to grow by 4 percent this year. After that, she also claimed that annual increases of between 6 and 8 percent are expected for the next few years.” All these accomplishments can fairly be taken as “good news” to the city and to Winnipeggers, in one way or the other. To the question as to what such accomplishments means, it means economic growth for the city, better employment opportunities for Winnipeggers, international

recognition for Manitoba and Canada, and, ultimately, that sense of pride in a Winnipegger. While there is so much that there is to say about Winnipeg’s economic development, the city must also take strides in curbing the city’s crime as it has been on an increasing rate, and must provide solution to the city’s worsening road conditions. These concerns must never be considered as trade-off to an economic growth. For a case in point, Toronto and Vancouver are economically robust and, at the same time, have relatively low crime rates and have the better roads in Canada. Perhaps, sooner rather than later, Vancouverites, Torontarians and non-Canadians would consider Winnipeg a “good place to be.” Perhaps, Winnipeg can join the conversation on the super cities of Canada and would be among the cities well-desired by Canadians for a long drive. And, that there will be lesser people who would raise the question—Where is Winnipeg?

My cardio workout includes jogging, playing ultimate frisbee and evening Zumba classes. Another crazy goal, more of a dare, is to participate in the Dirty Donkey Mud Run. here are times I dread visiting my aunt (tita), actually it's every single time. Every time I visit my aunt, she yells "Ang taba mo!" (You're fat!) All this while she feeds me a plate full of rice, pancit and adobo! She's definitely concerned about my growing waistline and has no problem pointing that out to me, regardless of who's around to listen. After several months of travelling, attending daily social functions and not eating the most healthy including the Jumbo Jet Dogs during the final week of Winnipeg Jets games, I decided to do something. I had to because I didn't feel like having to purchase new clothes for the summer. On Facebook, I saw several friends touting the results from a new Body By Vi 90-Day Challenge and after speaking directly with them, I decided that this would be the "thing" to get the ball rolling. Now that I'm a month into the program, I've lost 10lbs and my third chin is lost and I hope it doesn't come back. My friend Brenda is down 28lbs over 90 days and she looks and feels amazing. Combined with healthy eating, active living, the personal Body By Vi Challenge I've decided to take on includes some pretty lofty health and fitness goals. Where shall I start? Pantangco warned of this grim scenario once the government withdraws its tax incentives. Testifying before the Senate ways and means committee during a hearing to harmonize 180 tax incentive-related laws, Pantangco said the country’s residential rates are already the highest in Asia while the industrial rates are second to the highest in Asia. He warned that any deletion of the incentives granted would further increase the power rates of the country. He said that the incentives granted with respect to the BOI (Board of Investments) and RE (Renewable Energy) Act should be retained. PIPPA will pass on whatever savings they get as a result of these incentives. In the case of the RE Act, the incentives granted enables the IPPs (independent power producers) to pass on approximately P0.16 per kilowatt hour (KWH) from whatever is the proposed tariff.. He further added that newly built coal-fired power plants, the BOI incentives of income tax holiday (ITH), tax and duty- free importations result in savings of P0.27 kwh are passed on by the IPPs to consumers.. Sen. Ralph G. Recto, committee chairman said his committee will study Pantangco’s position because he wanted to know whether the supposed benefit to be enjoyed by consumers if incentives are not withdrawn represents additional profits for the IPPs. He added that the fiscal incentive program had indeed perked up the economy but the tax holiday has resulted in an annual revenue loss of P200 billion to P400 billion a year. Kim Henares, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner, told the Recto committee the BIR agrees with the Department of Finance’s (DOF) proposal to harmonize the current tax incentive holiday. Henares said the laws that grant tax exemption has become very unruly to manage as the government doesn’t know for certain how much revenue it has lost.

Nora Aunor not in a hurry to be conferred National Artist

S

uperstar Nora Aunor has expressed appreciation to those who endorsed her for the National Artist award. However the multi-awarded actress humbly said there are people other than her who deserve more to receive the prestigious honor, notwithstanding House Resolution 2317 filed by Bacolod Rep. Anthony Golez Jr. to name her as one of the Philippines’ National Artists. Golez reportedly called Aunor a national treasure, adding that her achievements and contributions to the Philippine movie industry are more than enough to qualify her for the prestigious title.

Meanwhile, the veteran actress has finished shooting her latest film “Thy Womb,” two weeks since coming down south to the island province of Tawi-Tawi. The movie, Nora’s first team-up with Cannes award-winning director Brillante Mendoza, deals with the struggles of a native Badjao midwife played by Nora. Tawi-Tawi Vice-Governor Ruby Sahali expressed her deep appreciation to Nora and the people behind the film for choosing their province as location, saying it’s a welcome breather amid all the bad publicity that Tawi-Tawi has been getting.

May 5-20, 2012

The superstar herself is equally grateful for the hospitality the province has shown to her and the film’s crew.

Celebrities among top finishers in Boracay race

elebrities were among top finishers in the third edition of the Skyathon 2012 recently held in Boracay. In the men’s 10-kilometer division, TV host Rovilson Fernandez clocked in at 55:09.45 to beat 64 others for 10th place. Actor and race car driver Mateo Guidicelli finished the 5-km race in less than 23 minutes to place 8th ahead of 69 participants. Sexy actress and former “Survivor” castaway Aubrey Miles finished 9th in the women’s 5-km division at 37 minutes, beating 53 others. Other celebrity participants include Troy Montero, BrazilianJapanese model Daniel Matsunaga and actor Will Devaughn who all finished the 5-km race at under 30 minutes.

Long-distance race veteran Gregg Osorio led the men’s 10-km race while Team Runner Academy coach Mherlz Lumagbas dominated the women’s 10-km division. Meanwhile, Rogie Ascano and Francesca Carpo of Fairview Running Club topped the 5-km divisions for men and women, respectively. The foot races aim to raise funds for the clean-up of Boracay and instill awareness on the importance of preserving one of the best beaches in the world. A total of 253 individual runners and 12 pairs for the couples relay joined this year’s edition sponsored by Sky Cable.

Fun with Lashes Model: Sarah Pogson Written by: Tia Provici & Alana Klein

OOK: TO GET THE L STEp 1

yelashes are all the rage for adding that final touch of picture perfectness. With so many different styles now, you can wear them during the day as well as on special evenings out. PROVICI’S lashes are made of 100% human hair and come in four different styles ranging from very natural to red carpet dramatic. What’s even better is that they are reusable. Lashes help make your eyes stand out more and can make them appear enchanting They are great for special occasions and show up really well for pictures. If you have short or sparse lashes you can thicken them up and or lengthen them instantly when you use false eye lashes. They can be applied very easily using a pair of tweezers, and PROVICI’S signature She Gloo (comes in black or clear. The black blends in with your eyeliner perfectly!). Before you apply false eye lashes, you want to ensure that they are the right length for your eyes. If the lash band is too long for your lash line, you’ll want to cut from the outer corner, because the inner corners of the falsies have shorter hair and you don’t want to cut that off. There should be a little space left from the inner corner of the eye as so that the false lash hair doesn’t stick into your eyes. Lashes are usually the last step in your makeup process. That means foundation, blush, eye shadows, liner and mascara are all already on.

AFTER STEp 2

Hold the lashes up to your eyes and line them up from the inner corner, towards the outer corner. Remember to leave a bit of space from the inner corner and whatever is flowing over past the outer corner of the eye, cut off. Sometimes they will fit perfectly and no trimming will be necessary.

Bring in this article, and when you purchase any pair of PROVICI lashes, get the lash glue for 50% off.

STEp 3

Take your tube of glue and squeeze a little bit out until it spills over the side of the tube. Then holding the lashes with your tweezers you will want to drag the spine of the lash along the glue getting an even thin line along the lash. Make sure to get the ends with the glue as well so they won’t lift once applied.

When applying lashes by yourself, tilt head back with chin up while eyes are looking down into the mirror. Hold the lash with your tweezers and line it up to your eye before placing down. Place the lash spine as close you can against your lash line. Place it down first, then pick up your tweezers and go along the false lash base and tack down the inner corner and outer corner.

NOT VALID WITH BOOKED APPOINTMENTS or any other special offers.

Jessica Sanchez joins AI’s Top 5

F

ilipino-Mexican singer Jessica Sanchez escapes another elimination round and is now among “American Idol” season 11’s Top 5 joining Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine and Hollie Cavanagh. A day before, the 16-year-old contender from San Diego got mixed reviews from the judges for her performance of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and another song of choice for the second round.. AI judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez praised the young singer’s Queen performance but added that rock is not her forte. Randy Jackson for his part said he loved the rendition adding that Jessica can sing

anything because of her beautiful voice. Despite their restrained raves, the judges were unanimous in their praise for Jessica’s performance of Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.” During the show’s elimination night last April 26 (April 27, Manila time) host Ryan Seacrest declared Jessica as the first “safe” contestant. Elise Testone who was among the “bottom three” with Skylar Laine and Hollie Cavanagh, was eliminated. Two weeks ago, Jessica almost got the exit axe after getting the least votes but the judges unanimously opted to save her.

Aquino cites risks of legislative wage hike, rejects P125 proposal

P

resident Benigno S. Aquino III in his Labor Day address Tuesday said a legislative wage hike, would amount to P1.4 trillion, or almost a fourth of the country’s P8-trillion economy. In rejecting the proposed P125 legislated wage hike for private workers, Aquino warned that businessmen may raise prices of their products, cut costs through laying off employees to make up for their losses, or forced to shut down business. The President instead urged the regional wage boards to hasten the approval of salary adjustments for workers in the private sector to help them cope with the cost of living in the country. Aquino likewise announced non-wage benefits for workers, including educational assistance fund. In the same speech, the President assured that the

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will deploy government inspectors to check the compliance of companies to the country’s labor rules on security of tenure and eliminate the abuse in the contractual labor scheme. The President likewise announced that government workers will get their salary increase this June in time for the school enrollment. The President said the government has set aside P1.1 billion for Training for Work Scholarship program that seeks to enhance the competitiveness of Filipino workers in tourism, agriculture, business process outsourcing, and electronics industries. He said both the Social Service System and Government Service Insurance System are ready to release fund for education assistance program so poor households can send their children to school.

LADLAD wants Miriam Quiambao to issue a public apology

Filipino Journal 27

Enraged netizens called Miriam names and even posted unsavory words to express their anger. For Bemz Benedicto, National Chairperson of Ang LADLAD and a transgender, Miriam’s Twitter posts were uncalled for. Meanwhile, UP Diliman Asst. ormer beauty queen Miriam Professor Danilo Arao advised Quiambao says she has nothing against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and extended her apology through Twitter for her statements that may have offended them. However it seems that the Twitter apology is not enough for LADLAD, the political party of LGBT who wants instead a public apology from Miriam. The 1999 Miss Universe first runner-up earned the ire of Twitter users when she posted her opinion about homosexuals saying, “Homosexuality is not a sin but it is a lie from the devil. Do not be deceived. God loves gays and wants them to know the truth,” followed by another post that read, “No offense to the LGBT but the TRuth is the Truth that comes from God. Take it or leave it. We will all face the judgement seat of God.”

Horoscope To turn around things, you ensure that they do not leave to them. Do not be too prompt to give your opinion. Listen to others attentively. The possibilities of voyages will be favorable in terms of connections moneymaking. Do not let the others limit you to say how you feel on the family questions.

In the romantic context of your life you may find yourself attracting rather forward or even aggressive individuals who’s agenda is more likely to be self-serving than not.

Your thoughts are likely to be more on home and family now. Keep in mind that changing circumstances and situations may call for personal adjustments. Communication may increase now with family members and there may be discussions concerning needed changes and the logistics associated with that as well as discussions around security needs.

You are feeling very focused on performing your “duty” now. For you this is a serious responsibility and one you refuse to shun. But sometimes, you simply must let your hair down a bit and get out there and have some fun.

Don’t give up on love, Taurus! This week is crackling with romantic activity, from start to finish, so let your playful, passionate personality out to play.

Your career is peaking right now and it seem that you simply can do know wrong when it comes to work-related activities. You are no doubt making great strides in your career.

You will see a marked upswing in your popularity, both in the romantic arena and with regard to business matters. You could easily wind up in a new partnership or even a marriage.

The communication problems you’ve had in recent weeks are finally in remission. You find that you’re able to nip most communication problems in the bud before they even occur.

At this time you may find yourself struggling in spirit and attitude to measure up to the challenges that lie before you. The virtues, especially fortitude, endurance and courage may be immediate allies in your present development.

If you have been thinking about cleaning out a garage or redecorating a spare bedroom, you could pick a worse time than now to undertake that project. Get rid of extraneous property and belongings that you really don’t need.

You are feeling the need for emotional support and closeness now, something that may be lacking in your current relationship. The practical problems surrounding your love life seem unimportant to you now. What is important is that feeling of love.

Things may have been a bit crazy and volatile at work recently and there’s a chance there is going to be some major shake-ups there, but that’s no reason to be afraid.

The Wave Splashes Eternal, part 16 Here We Go, It’s not a Joke! (On The Primitives and Killing Joke)

T

he year 2012 is proving to be really bountiful for enthusiasts of New Wave / Postpunk music. Many classic pioneers of the genre have been reuniting not only to perform concerts but also to release new materials. So far, bands that have returned with new albums include The Primitives, Ultravox, the Killing Joke, Translator, Public Image Ltd., Men Without Hats, and The Cult. Killing Joke Back in the mid-’80s, the time I was discovering the kind of music that eventually became known as New Wave and Postpunk, the song “Love like Blood” was one of the first anthems that defined my recollection of that era. The eerilysounding guitar and synth and the pounding bassline and drumbeat in the intro of the song were enough to send me to a musical high—nostalgia aside. Only in the days of the Internet when I realized that the album containing “Love like Blood” and “Eighties”—two of my favorite Killing Joke songs— was actually the fifth already. Formed in London, England, in 1978, Killing Joke faded into oblivion as the 1990s loomed simply because they fell off the commercial radar when new and interesting bands dominated the mid-’90s, despite their prolificity in releasing albums. However, ironically, it was also the arrival of a band that would define the Alternative Rock music of the 1990s that would place Killing Joke back into the limelight: In 1992 the American Grunge band Nirvana released the song “Come as You Are”—the opening riff of which was a deadringer of Killing Joke’s “Eighties”— and it catapulted both bands to further popularity. And so, Killing Joke was somehow revitalized, regrouping and releasing a string of new albums in the years that followed. In 2012, one of the most prolific bands in the Postpunk genre released their 15th album, MMXII. The first single off this, “In Cythera,” is enough to claim that Killing Joke’s New Wave sound is ready to shine brightly again like a thousand suns. Killing Joke has 15 full-length studio albums to its credit: Killing Joke (1980), What's THIS For...! (1981), Revelations (1982), Fire Dances (1983), Night Time (1985), Brighter than a Thousand Suns (1986), Outside the Gate (1988), The Courtauld Talks (1989), Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions (1990), Pandemonium (1994), Democracy

(1996), Killing Joke (2003), Hosannas from the Basements of Hell (2006), Absolute Dissent (2010), and MMXII (2012). Killing Joke is comprised by Jeremy “Jaz” Coleman (vocals, synthesizer), Kevin “Geordie” Walker (guitar), Martin “Youth” Glover (bass), and Paul Ferguson (drums, vocals).

Jim Carrey. The music of the band is best defined by the cutesy vocals, jangly and mildly fuzzy guitars, and simple basslines and drumbeats—typical characteristics of Indie Pop music. The Primitives released their first album, Lovely, in 1988; followed this up with Pure (1989) and Galore (1991); and then they broke up in 1992. The Primitives re-formed in 2009 to perform various reunion concerts, and in 2012 they finally released their new materials: the EP Never Kill a Secret (March 2012), which contains four songs: the originals “Rattle My Cage” and “Never Kill a Secret” plus the covers “Need All the Help I Can Get” (Lee Hazlewood / Suzi Jane Hokum, 1966) and “Breakaway” (Toni Basil, 1966); and the fourth full-length album, Echoes and Rhymes (April 2012), which consists entirely of covers of obscure '60s-released femalesung songs like "Sunshine on My Rainy Day" by Polly Niles, "Move It On Over" by LeGrand Mellon, "Single Girl" by Sandy Posey, and "Turn Off the Moon" by Sue Lyon.

The Primitives Currently comprised by Paul Court (guitars, vocals), Tracy Cattell (vocals, tambourine), Tig Williams (drums), and Raph Moore (bass), The Primitives formed in Coventry, England, in 1985. Their most widely popular Final Note song is “Crash,” from the debut In the next issue, we will album and which was included on feature the return of two classic the original soundtrack of the 1994 New Wave / Synthpop bands—the film Dumb and Dumber, starring British Ultravox and the Canadian Men Without Hats.

Plantation Bay Resort & Spa - Mactan Island, Cebu

Filipino Journal 33

Magambo offers the “The Complete Spa Pampering Treat” which includes a pool massage, body scrub, foot therapy, facial treatment, aromatherapy oil massage in a private treatment room along with an unlimited supply of hot or cold Chinese green tea. The best part, after any treatment or spa pakcage you get at Mogambo Springs, clients are allowed to enjoy

the spa’s four hydrotherapeutic pools, massage waterfalls, sauna and the steam rooms for the remainder of the day. Not a bad way to spend a day - under a waterfall. Next time you’re in Cebu, go ahead and spoil yourself. You deserve it. Plantation Bay Resort and Spa is about a 30-minute shuttle ride from Cebu Mactan International Airport.

E

ver since my first trip to Cebu back in 2008, I missed out on the opportunity to stay at Plantation Bay after a business conference. After island hopping in Cagayan de Oro and Camiguin last January, I decided to jump on a plane and visit Cebu for a couple days for some much needed rest and relaxation. Off to Plantation Bay Resort and one of the Philippines’ foremost spa resorts - Magambo Springs. I knew I was going to enjoy most of my time at the spa as Magambo Springs was listed as one of the top spa destinations int he Philippines by Asia Spa Magazine in 2010. It certainly didn’d disappoint. The entire resort is themed after Spanish colonial plantation architecture with natural and manmade lagoons. All of the resort rooms over-looked several freshwater and salt-water lagoons and only a few steps away from a beach chair on one of the many semi-private verandas. The rooms themselves were well equipped and the AC was a welcome bonus after spending time under the hot Philippine sun. The resort itself boasts several themed restaurants and

nightly themed buffet dinner and entertaiment. I missed the first night “Rockin’ USA” show which included BBQ ribs and chicken on the menu. The next night I was treated to the “Hawaiian Luau” show that included fire dancers and hula dancers. Other activities at the resort included wall-climing, swimming, a well equipped gym, a games room, biking and renting a Segway to zip throughout the resort. There was an indoor firing range, a small golf pitch-and-putt, tennis and beach volleyball. Plantation Bay Resort is great for families as there are lots of activities for both children and adults. Let’s not forget the real reason I visited Plantation Bay Resort and Spa. I was here for the spa and I was looking for sanctuary after the chaos and go-go-go schedule a week prior. Magambo Springs was designed to resemble an 18th century Japanese village with thundering waterfalls, calming creeks and sounds of the sea playing quietly through the spa. This was going to be a great place to relax, recharge and replenish my energies.

As with many spas in the Philippines, Magambo offers a wide range of head-to-toe day spa packages. It would be quite easy to spend an entire day on a massage table, given a sea-salt body scrub and wrapped in banana leaves, followed by a traditional Filipino Hilot massage. Not quite a full day, but a good portion of an afternoon. In fact, if you wanted a complete 7 hour spa experience,

@BigMarvShow

From Winnipeg to Winning Fights in the UFC

I

got a chance to speak with Roland Delorme, UFC fighter and Winnipegger. Delorme was on Spike TV’s final season of The Ultimate Fighter. He won his fight on the season finale of that show and will fight this Saturday on the UFC on Fox card. BIG MARV: What’s the biggest difference between fighting on the local and Canadian shows and fighting in the UFC? ROLAND DELORME: Paycheck. It’s about the numbers, man (laughs). In the UFC you can earn bonuses. All comes down to dollars and cents. Also, there’s getting that exposure you just can’t get locally. When you

fight regionals you fight in front of a few thousand, if it’s televised, maybe 100,000 people across the nation. The UFC is international so you go from thousands to millions. For my fan base, it’s easier to follow… plus the competition is better too. BM: What can you tell me about your opponent Nick Denis? RD: Tough guy. He’s 11-2 with ten wins by KO and TKO. I gotta stay away, fight on the outside. He’s got big power. But everything about him is good not great. I have to be out there, out fighting him. I want a tough, grimy war. For me, everything else is improving. I’m going to win this fight, submission is my specialty, but it’s going to be

tough. Which is great. If it’s not dangerous it’s not fun. No risk, no reward BM: Your last fight showcased how well rounded you are. By knocking down Josh Ferguson and tapping him out… say this fight goes exactly how you want it to, how would you like to finish off Denis? RD: (The Ferguson fight) was a fantastic fight. I could’ve finished him sooner. Hurt him with the left. Then choked him out. For Denis, as much as I’d like to get the fight on the ground, the fight starts on the feet. We have to trade and see who hits harder, who’s first to be intimated. I know I hit hard, If I catch him with my left, it’s going to hurt. If I get him with my right, he’ll be knocked out. I’m gonna make it a really hard night for him. As for the finish? However. KO, submission. I visualize the fight. What to do is if this happens. Or, ok, now this happened, what do I do. I train so much for every aspect of the fight so that nothing surprises me. It’s all action-reaction. That’s why I don’t plan too much, so if something doesn’t happen the way I plan, I don’t get discouraged. I just train for everything that can happen in there. Also, I have a bad memory, so if I have a bad round, I’ll come out for the second round like nothing happened. BM: You gained fame from being on the last season of The Ultimate Fighter. Are you getting recognized around the city? What are the perks in Winnipeg? Extra Nip anytime you hit up a Sal’s? RD: Not much. Get recognized. People want to talk about fighting and the UFC and that’s awesome. But perks come with success, the

more success in the ring, the more outside the ring. BM: What? You mean no one in the city has given you a car yet? RD: No! I want that Obby Kahn recognition! BM: Yeah, Obby has his own restaurant now, where’s yours?! RD: I sold it! BM: Really? RD: Yeah, I owned a pizza place in Niverville and sold it to fight. I can own a restaurant when I’m 50, but I can’t fight then. Yeah, it was a risk, but sometimes, you got to roll dice. Like I said, no risk, no reward. BM: That is so cool. We are so proud of you being from Winnipeg. Ace Burpee placed you in his Top 100 People of 2011. Any advice for other local fighters to make it to the UFC? RD: Hard work pays off. Believe in yourself. Want it, do it. At all costs. Set sights, tunnel vision until you get it. Even when you’re too exhausted, and you don’t feel like doing it, don’t quit. The guy you’re fighting, he

May 5-20, 2012 isn’t quitting. So get after it. Hard work is how to achieve it. BM: Once the fight is over and you don’t have to worry about making weight anymore. Tell me the one thing you want to eat. RD: Not one thing. Everything. Cheesecake, poutine. When I see a menu, I want it all. One thing? I guess I gotta say Pizza. Man, pizza is my favorite. (laughs) BM: Anyone you want to throw a shout out to? RD: My sponsor Booster Fight Gear, my team at WAMMA and my trainers Lindsay Hawks and Curtis Brigham, without them I’m nothing. I love WAMMA. I enter the cage to fight alone, but with WAMMA, I got an army behind me. BM: Thanks Rolly. You have the whole city of Winnipeg behind you too! Best of luck! RD: Thanks, man. Roland Delorme fights Nick Denis Saturday, May 5th in East Rutherford, New Jersey on the undercard of UFC on FOX 3: Diaz vs Miller
