Veteran director takes over top MTRCB post

V

eteran movie director and Vice Chairman Emmanuel “Maning” Borlaza will take over the chairmanship of the Movie and Television Rating and Classification Board (MTRCB) after Grace Poe-Llamanzares formally stepped down to join the political area. Poe-Llamanzares, the daughter of the late actor Fernando Poe Jr. is among the senatorial candidates being fielded by the Liberal Party (LP) in the coming 2013 polls. Borlaza started his showbiz career in the ‘60s. The 1965 biomovie “Iginuhit Ng Tadhana,” that helped Ferdinand Marcos’ campaign to Malacañang was among his most notable work as a screenwriter for Sampaguita Studios. He also received critical acclaim as a film director with his musical, drama, comedy, fantasy, romance, and horror genres movies. He directed 24 films with Vilma Santos, mostly during the musical era of the 70s and in the 80s. In 2003, Borlaza was the Gawad Direk awardee from the Directors Guild of the Philippines. Borlaza was working for the Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Pelikulang Pilipino (NMPP) prior to his appointment to MTRCB. According to deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte, Borlaza will take over temporarily until a new chairman is named by the .President.

Mosaic Funeral opens 2nd location on Nairn

Committed to serving the needs of the Filipino community

T

he opening of the 2nd Mosaic Funeral at 2006 Nairn Avenue demonstrates the Mosaic tradition of serving many ethnic communities. And with this latest and the newest facility with welcoming and feel-home ambience, the Management marks the milestone in their promise of excellent service, transparency and honoring the Filipino traditions and heritage. "Our commitment to fully service the needs of the Filipino community is our front and centre in our funeral service. We are family oriented and always available to respond with dignity and comfort." says Darin Hoffman, one of the owners. "One will notice that most of our sales counselors are Filipino Canadians who in many ways have been helping us to understand and to learn the various Filipino traditions which are very strong foundation of the Filipino families here in Winnipeg."

Incorporated in 2006, Mosaic Funeral has been serving the Filipino community since it opened at the corner of Inkster Blvd. and Keewatin Street. The owners are Darin Hoffman and his spouse Zeny Urbano Regalado, Shawn Arnason, Pat Potenza and John Gigliotti. The Mosaic Funeral at Nairn Ave., boasts a similar feel to the Inkster location and have expanded the size to serve the growing ethnic communities. Some of the highlights are: 1) N.E. Winnipeg’s largest chapel and reception centre that can accommodate 450 people; 2) large parking lot for 150 vehicles; 3) modern accessible facilities; 4) Webcasting of funerals: Secure viewing of your loved ones’s funeral anywhere in the world which include the Philippines especially for our Filipino clients; 5) competitive pricing for all services and merchandise available; 6)Darin and Shawn share over 50 years of experience in all aspects of

Funeral, Cremation and Cemetery Services; 7) familiar staff: Zeny Regalado, Nap Ebora, Marilyne Sangalang, Alicia de la Cruz, Rick and Daisy Tibay, Queenie Gonda, and Kim Regalado; 8) Pre-arrangements: we honor all funeral home pre-arrangements. Please bring in your paper works to explore your options in transfers. It is in your best interest to bring your pre-arrangements in for us to review to ensure that you receive the best possible pricing and service. Purchasing everything at a cemetery/funeral home combo location might be convenient but many result in your paying high prices. With the opening of the 2nd location, at Nairn Ave. and Keenleyside St., Mosaic

Funeral Cremation and Cemetery Services, offers a best option to remember our loved ones; and to share how lives of our loved ones are best lived. With the slogan: “CARING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE”, Mosaic Funeral, a locally owned

My Ride Ron Cantiveros

Honda Pilot Touring is a people mover

I

f you’re looking to move people or carry a lot of stuff, you may want to consider the updated styling of the 8-passenger 2012 Honda Pilot Touring AWD edition. As I’m normally behind the wheel, I rarely get the opportunity to understand the nuances of being a passenger in the vehicles I review. While in my driveway, I spent quite a bit of time in the back of the Pilot. The Pilot’s interior is massive. This mid-sized SUV was definitely

designed to move people with a spacious interior, and amenities that include a rear entertainment system. The Pilot provides comfortable seating for 8 people with a 2nd and 3rd row of seating. While seating in the 2nd row is comfortable for almost anyone, the same can’t be said for an easyto-access 3rd row. In one latch flip, I easily jumped into the third row to quickly realize that my 5’9” frame wouldn’t last too long in the 3rd

row. My 10-year old self would have easily enjoyed sitting in the 3rd row. Even with the Honda Pilot, I will still continue to question the practicality of a 3rd row seating. The one downside to having a full cabin of passengers, the cargo area behind the third row is extremely limited. Both 2nd and 3rd row are 60/40 split seats and offer the flexibility of accommodating a mix of passengers and cargo. For parents with needing extra anchors for child seats, you’ll be happy to know that the Pilot comes with three lower anchors and tethers in the 2nd row and one in the 3rd row. That’s four baby seats and one busy family. Other great features that will keep the kids entertained in the back of the Pilot include a 9” DVD entertainment unit with a detachable remote, three separate wireless headsets and independent climate controls. One of the coolest features

in the Pilot is the integrated 2nd row sunshades. Under the hood, the Honda Pilot Touring AWD comes equipped with a 3.5-litre, 24-valve, SOHC, i-VTEC® V6 engine, 5-speed automatic transmission and generates 250hp at 5700rpm and 253 lb.-ft. torque at 4800rpm. Fuel efficiency is managed automatically in the engine system and allows the use of 3, 4 or 6-cylinders to be used depending on the driving conditions.

October 5-20, 2012 As winter is just around the corner for us in the prairies, the AWD is an added bonus for driving through the slush and potholes of our glorious Winnipeg streets. The Pilot comes in five different trim levels starting with the base LX 2WD ($34,920) and on the top end with the Touring AWD ($48,520). The Pilot competes with the Ford Flex, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9 and GMC Acadia.

Julie Anne, Elmo among Ellen DeGeneres’ audience

K

apuso love team Julie Anne San Jose and Elmo Magalona were in the audience on one of Ellen DeGeneres show episode during their recent trip to the US. In a TV news report, Julie Anne was seen dancing it out with Ellen during that famous dance segment after the opening monologue. The young star fondly recalls she was starstruck while dancing for some five seconds with the famous

Rae Jepsen, and Justin Bieber’s mom, Pattie Mallette. Julie Anne and Elmo traveled to the US to shoot for their music video for Julie Anne’s self-titled American TV host. In the pat, album “Enough.” Ellen Degeneres had some Filipino talents as guests of her show such as Charice and Rhap Salazar. The two celebrities revealed that they also danced to “Gangnam Style” together with the audience minutes before DeGeneres appeared. They were also able to see in person some famous Hollywood celebrities who guested during the episode including Clint Eastwood, Carly

Miss Saigon to be adapted into a full length movie

T

he award-winning musical that catapulted Filipina singer Lea Salonga a byword in the global music scene will be adapted into a full-length film. The announcement came from Sir Cameron Mackintosh himself during a recent interview with Britain’s The Telegraph. Mackintosh, the creator of other legendary musicals like The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Mary , and Cats, said that Miss Saigon is the next musical destined for the silver screen .. However Mackintosh added that the decision to push through with the project will depend on the result at the tills of Les Miserables, his latest musical made into a

movie that will hit the theaters this Christmas. The big screen musical was based on the 1862 French novel by author Victor Hugo of the same title. This early, a number of aspirants are reportedly planning to audition for the lead role of Kim. Mackintosh was said to have already met with former Disney star, Fil-Am Anna Maria Perez de Tagle in London because he was told she can do justice for the role of Kim. De Tagle is reportedly endowed with Salonga’s innocence and powerful stage presence, as, as well as her superb vocal skill. Miss Saigon is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, and similarly tells the

tale of a romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. The setting of the plot is in Saigon during the Vietnam War of the 1970s. The original Kim was played by Lea Salonga who became famous worldwide for the role that also worn for her the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award and Tony Award.

The memories of the life fully lived...

"Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future And life is worth the living just because He lives!"

Nelly Regalado (Nee Demapendan)

June 7, 1923- September 16, 2012

Beloved Mother, Precious Grandmother, Loving Sister and Auntie, A Friend, "Nanay" and "Lola" to many, Jesus Christ’s Missionary to the End.

The Regalado Family would like to thank everyone who in one way or another, had shown their support, shared the thoughts, offered prayers, sent cards of sympathy, brought flowers and food, attended the lamay and the funeral.

N

"there is such a void only Grandma could fill. i know and feel that. a tender love only a Grandma can provide. a love so deep, and a pain unexplainable. Only Jesus understands and cares at a moment where we feel so helpless with sorrow overflowing. " Saad Regalado Gabuna "I miss grandma Nelly's voice " - Katherine June Regalado Exconde "have a good journey home grandma. I thank the Lord that you we’re able to live on earth for 89 years" Anne Mirriam Regalado "I miss grandma so much.. Just holding the packages of powdered chocolate milk she saved me makes me cry a river" - Kimberly Ann Regalado

ELLY REGALADO (nee DEMAPENDAN) Our beloved mother and grandmother, Nelly (nee Demapendan) Regalado, surrounded by her family went home peacefully to her Maker and Saviour on September 16, 2012 at the Grace Hospital. She now has joined her husband, our father and grandfather Protacio Regalado, Sr., her parents Evaresto (father) and Ana (mother); her sisters Noemi and Editha; brothers Benedicto and Eduardo. Nelly was born on June 7, 1923 in Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines. She married our father on May 1, 1947 and had six children, 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She moved to Winnipeg, MB, Canada in 1981. Left to cherish her moral and spiritual legacies are her children and their spouses: Bernadette (Harold Healey), Gideon (Sisko), Judy Grace (Robert Gabuna), Noel (Helen), Ruth (Jess Gonzales), and Bobby, Jr.; her grandchildren: Michael Jeffrey, Philip Andrew, Jonathan David, Anne Mirriam, Peter David, Bahandi (Maureen), Saad, Katherine June (Vil), Kristian Paolo, Paul Christian, John, Jessica Ruth-Anne (Seth), Jerahmeel John, Japheth, Kimberly Ann and Jed; her great-grandchildren: Aliyah May, Kaleb Mason, Alyssa Belle and Isaiah Malaya. She will be missed by her sisters, brother and their families: Cecilia (Domingo Camia, Canada) Elisa Solayao (Canada), Adela de la Cruz (Canada), Rebecca Buaron (Philippines) and Eliseo Demapendan (Philippines); nephews and nieces residing both in Canada and in the Philippines. Her fellowship will also be missed by her home church, The Maples Evangelical Church and members of her Seniors Group from other Filipino congregations. Nelly was a very caring and generous person. She gave of herself selflessly and tirelessly for her children and those in need. She was resourceful and courageous. In her business occupation, she even braved the strongest typhoons in the vast and deepest seas and prayed to anchor safe to the shore for the sake of her children who needed her then. She loved to smile in spite of her physical pain, appreciated her care givers and thank them for their services. She was a humble and forgiving person. She loved to baby sit her grand-children when they were young and became an avid fan of their sports activities. She enjoyed watching musical and school performances of her grandchildren. Nelly’s passion was all about Jesus Christ. She consumed her waking hours organizing, reading and memorizing Scriptures, listening to sacred hymns and praise and worship choruses which she had carefully catalogued. She was an active evangelist of Jesus Christ wherever she went, such as door to door for Evangelism Explosion, doctor’s clinic and hospital as a patient, to name few places. She loved to watch Christian Television programs and took important notes so she can share with others especially to her grandchildren. It was a joy for her to pray and make personalized journal for every grandchild containing Bible promises about assurance of salvation, wisdom and guidance. She had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing. She loved going places with her children. She had been to Finland, Arizona, Victoria, BC, Northern Manitoba Communities, and California and planned to go to the Arctic in Nunavut before she left us. We would like to express sincere appreciation to the staff of Calvary Place Personal Care Home and medical team of Grace Hospital with special thanks to Dr. Hartley (CPPCH) and Dr. Joshua of Grace Hospital. Lamay (visitation and tributes) will be on September 27 and 28, from 6:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight. Service for celebration of Nelly’s life starts at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral and Interment service will be on September 29, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a gathering of family and friends at the reception hall. All services will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home located at 4477 Main St., West St. Paul, MB. Well done, thou good and faithful servant, Enter thou into the joy of the Lord . Horoscope Where your profession is concerned, you should be the only one making the decisions. Even though you appreciate what someone has done for you, you still get the feeling that others around think that you are just putting on a good front. Go about the process of making the best decision for you and make sure you follow through with action.

Relationships run smoothly today. This is a time to share the way you feel with your significant other .You would learn how to communicate effectively. When you start to see how much you can actually accomplish in a short time you’ll be motivated to continue on.

This is a time for thinking about yourself and what you really want in life. Although you take your responsibilities at work very seriously, it could be a valuable exercise to converse with others. You’ll be working with a lot more energy than the people around you will have today, so you need to be prepared to wait for them -- a lot.

You are determined to get yourself together and start a new business in association with a friend. When others know you will support them, they are more willing to provide you with their support. It would be a day to fulfill your desires.

This is a day that you can take one of two ways. You can see it as a learning experience and be thankful that it happened now rather than later in your life. Financial results of your latest work will soon start showing. Your budget is improving and you will tend to socialize more.

You might receive a significant amount of money at work, which will help you balance your budget. Before you splurge on extravagant or unnecessary items, see if there is a less expensive alternative or another way to satisfy your cravings. Stability in flow is seen.

This time is favorable for travel, learning, creative activities and romantic opportunities. Express yourself with authority today and others will respect your thoughts and ideas. Put simply, life is about living it to the best of your abilities.

It’s a great day for finalizing plans, especially if they are related to travel in any way. You would be exposed to challenges and competition at workplace. Take advantage of your strengths and keep it on a personal level today. Others will appreciate your people skills.

When it comes to being successful, you are the only person who can determine that. If you take charge of your attitude and your life and make a conscious effort to work towards achieving your goals. With mature self-respect, you are able to stabilize and handle your responsibilities successfully.

Challenging trends would emerge at career front. Paying more attention to the little routine things and getting them done will result in less scrutiny on days like today. It will be quite easy to bring about the changes that will benefit yourself and others.

Your mind is going to be sharper than ever today, which means that you’ll be able to pick up anything, quickly. This is a time to set your priorities as you will tend to take on more than you can honestly handle. If you need to make light speed with a project, assemble a team whose determination matches yours.

Your dreams now begin to take practical form and application. You show leadership and ambition in your profession and constructive activity in your domestic affairs. Modify your attitude concerning what you are capable of and what you deserve and others will follow suit. Trust yourself: You know what to say.

Ted Bobier brings visual challenge on his painting

H

is name is not yet a byword in the wider art scene but his painting covers a wider span of time and space, thanks to his style which is a subject of different interpretations and understanding. And this has shown lately when he presented his latest works "PARADIGM SHIFT” at Wayne Arthur Gallery, Provencher Blvd in St. Boniface. Ted Bobier shares his statement of his latest work: "My transition from realism to abstractions is painfully slow. I often struggle with the implications of leaving behind the illusions of the real world in favour of reaching a purity

of forms and colours, which eventually leads to my own creation." Paradigm shift is the shifting of his awareness as an artist, recording his day to day visual life experience on canvas. His works often defies the interpretative possibilities of the language; his attention is focused on the larger implications of the works, rather than their meaning. He never plans his paintings but lets the ideas freely flow and he reflects on the visual playground, pushing himself to the limit until he reaches a certain state of mind that connects him to the divine creator and lets oneness flourish throughout his work.

His art is the reflection of what is within him: his heart and soul. An expression of his mood and feelings, the art of beauty, joy, laughter and even hate, the subliminal, and the sublime. The art of how his mind deals with all the external influences that come to play from the influence of both the real and the virtual. Certainly there are challenges in his life, the pain, the fear, and despair. Nonetheless, this negativity is eradicated by his continued quest for the purity of forms and colour which eventually leads to his own creation. The art show was sponsored by Vickar Community Group (Vickar Chev, Vickar Mitsubishi, Vickar Nissan, Waverly Mitsubishi. He extended his heartfelt thank you to the Vickar Auto Group, and to Edgar de Leon, Jojo Villanueva, Angel Brana, Marissa Calvadores and Jimmel’s Bakery.
