ewly elected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brought a dash of youthful vitality to the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which is meeting in the Philippine capital this week. Sworn in just two weeks ago, Trudeau, is still enjoying a reprise of popularity that swept his father former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, into office in 1968. At 43, the Canadian Prime

Minister has been likened to Obama, who at 54 is more than a decade older. The average age of Pacific Rim leaders is 60-years old. Mexican President Enrique Pe単a Nieto is 49. The leaders of Russia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Peru are all in their early to mid-50s, while Pacific Rim leaders are in their early 60s or older. reporters and media coverage of his appearance at a business forum was hotly contested. Trudeau has declared his intention to reclaim Canada's compassionate and constructive voice. He favors Canada's ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a 12-nation trade agreement championed by U.S. President Barack Obama that is meant to become the core of a region-wide free trade bloc.

APEC Organizing Committee Disputes over South China Thanked Filipinos and their Sea Surfaced at the Final Hospitality Day of APEC 2015

Filipinos were thanked by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit National Organizing Committee for their cooperation during the summit which was held on November 18 and 19. APEC is thankful for Filipinos who showed them the true meaning of Filipino hospitality. “Thank you for your patience and understanding over the inconvenience brought about by our enhanced security measures,” a Facebook post on APEC Philippines read.

“You have shown to the 10, 000 delegates composed of 19 economic leaders, 2 highlevel representatives of member –economies, 21 trade foreign ministers, 21 senior officials, over 6,000 staff and security personnel, over 4,000 members of the local and International media what Filipino hospitality means,” it added. Due to the recent APEC summit, classes and works were suspended, flights were canceled and several roads were closed which drew complaints from netizens.

n intense rhetoric over the South China Sea had been discussed, overshadowing this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), recently held in Manila. The annual summit is meant to establish unity among participating economies, but the talks were often diverted on China’s assertiveness and military aggression in the sea. APEC membersthe Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have rival claims to parts of the sea, which is believed to sit atop vast oil and gas resources. These actions led for some nations who are part of the dispute to call for support from Washington. Upon President Obama’s arrival on Tuesday, he announced that the US will be giving more than $250 million in maritime aid for their Southeast Asian allies. He also offered a warship to the Philippines.

Tuesday, December 1, Olongapo City Regional Trial Court found US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton guilty of homicide for the death of Filipino Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude last year. Pemberton is to serve 6 to 12 years in prison and is ordered to pay over 4 million pesos to Laude’s family for compensation and damages. A standoff took place between the U.S. and the Philippine government as the court ordered that Pemberton be temporarily detained at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. Although not fully happy with the court decision, Laude’s family considers the verdict as a victory. Julita, Jeniffer’s mother said stated that she is not content with 6 to 12 years imprisonment. What’s important is that he will be sent to jail. Laude’s family and lawyers are also not happy with Pemberton being guilty of homicide instead of murder. RTC Branch 74 Judge Roline Gines-Jabalde discarded Pemberton’s claims of self-defense but doesn’t consider the killing as murder because there were no elements that define murder under the Philippine law – treachery, use of superior force and cruelty.

On Wednesday, Obama repeated Washington’s demand for China to stop further land reclamation and militarization, shortly before the trade talks got underway. “We discussed the impact of China’s land reclamation and construction activities on regional stability,” Obama told reporters after meeting Philippine President Benigno Aquino. “We agree on the need for bold steps to lower tensions, including pledging to halt further reclamation, new construction, and militarization of disputed areas in the South China Sea.” This week, Vietnam agreed to a strategic partnership with the Philippines to increase security ties in response to China’s aggression. Vietnam also signed a strategic partnership this week in Manila with the Philippines, deepening security ties partly in response to Chinese assertiveness in the sea.

Putin’s dilemma

PEREZCOPE by Perry

Diaz

PerryDiaz@gmail.com Russian strongman Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s warmongering acts of sending his warplanes dangerously close to Baltic States’ territorial airspace had forced these Baltic NATO member-states to scramble their fighter jets to intercept the intruding Russian warplanes. And, as always, after being warned by the NATO interceptors, they turned around and high-tailed it home. It’s a game the Russians play to test the readiness of NATO. And NATO is always ready especially at this time when Putin seems like he is itching for a fight. But he is aware that he has less firepower than the cumulative combat forces of the 28-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which has been fortifying its eastern border with the Russian Federation. In particular are the small Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. As former Soviet republics in the defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the Baltic States are vulnerable to Russian invasion. Unable to defend themselves from

their former communist rulers, they opted to join NATO after the collapse of USSR in 1991. And Putin, who has been dreaming of the revival of the glorious Russian Empire of Catherine the Great, couldn’t stop himself from telling the whole world that he could roll his tanks to Russia’s former satellite and client states -- the Baltic States, Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria – and capture their capitals within two days. But if Putin did that, the invaded NATO countries would invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, which would obligate the NATO alliance to come to their defense. The question is: Would Russia resort to nuclear warfare in such an event? And this poses the greatest threat not only to the NATO members but also to the whole world community.

Cold War During the Cold War when the Western alliance and the Soviet Union had some 8,000 nuclear warheads each ready to be used against each other. In the event of a nuclear war of this magnitude, the two warring sides would annihilate each other, and that would be the end of Earth, which happens to be the only livable planet in our solar system. And the result of this nuclear holocaust is MAD; that is, mutually assured destruction, which will make Planet Earth uninhabitable for at least 1,000 years. Last September, Putin started sending Russian fighter jets and bombers to Syria to drop bombs and cruise missiles on the Syrian rebels fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad, the dictator who refused to abdicate his hated regime and surrender power to a motley group of rebels.

Let's get social

Putin-Obama relationship Now, with Russian fighter jets and bombers deployed to a Syrian airbase in Latakia, the civil war is fragmented into autonomous rebel groups with no central authority to coalesce them into a united front. It soon become apparent that Putin’s real objective was to protect the Assad regime and prevent its fall to the “moderate” rebels – the Free Syrian Army, Kurds, Turkmen, and other groups that have ties to the U.S. While it is known that the Sunni groups are anti-Assad, the Russians didn’t seem to go after them like they do with the “moderates.” And this puts Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama at odds over their ultimate objectives, to wit: Putin wants the destruction of all rebel groups – particularly the anti-Assad “moderates” -- and keep Assad in power; while Obama wants to remove Assad from power and put the “moderates” in control of the government. With an uneasy relationship between Putin and Obama, their warplanes could easily cross paths that could result in an accidental firefight. So far, there has been no accidental encounter yet. Turkish-Russian encounter Last October, Turkish warplanes intercepted a Russian-made drone in Turkish air space near Syria. But Russia said that the unmanned drone did not belong to her. According to the Turkish military, the drone was shot down after it continued its flight path and ignored three warnings. The second incident happened last Nov. 24 when two Russian Su24 bombers intruded into Turkish airspace. Turkey immediately

scrambled F-16 fighter jets to intercept them. Turkey claimed that the Turkish pilots warned the Russian pilots 10 times over five minutes. One of the Russian warplanes turned around and went back to Syrian airspace while the other continued its flight inside Turkish airspace. The Turkish F-16s fired at the second Russian plane, which was hit and crashed inside Syria. The two pilots parachuted but were fired upon by Syrian rebels killing one of them. A Russian helicopter tried to rescue the other pilot but was driven away by heavy fire from the ground. Putin was furious at what happened. He called the incident “stab at the back.” Russian officials also said that there would be consequences; however, they did not specify what kind of action the Russians would take. Undeterred by the Russians’ threat of retaliation, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the Russian warplanes’ alleged violation of Turkish airspace. He called the incident an infringement of Turkey’s sovereignty. He accused Russia of propping up the Assad regime, which he said was inflicting terrorism on its own people. Putin’s dilemma The downing of the Russian aircraft by a NATO member-state was the first since the Cold War era more than half-century ago. Putin is faced with a dilemma: If he does nothing, then he’d lose face plus it would shatter his image as a fearless and strong leader who wouldn’t hesitate to use nuclear weapons against his adversaries, notably, the U.S. If he did something – like shooting down a Turkish warplane or launch a cruise missile attack on a military installation

or naval warship -- it could compel Turkey to counter-attack or invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, which states that an attack on one Ally shall be considered an attack on all Allies. If that happens, it could trigger World War III. But considering Putin’s cockiness and penchant for brinkmanship, he’d probably wait for an opportune time to get even with Turkey. Some experts were saying that Putin might impose economic sanctions or cancel some oil and gas cooperative ventures that would benefit Turkey economically. Putin could also punish the anti-Assad Turkmen rebels that have close affinity to the Turkish people and whom the Turkish government protects and supports in their war against the Assad government. War or peace The day after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu announced that Russia would deploy anti-aircraft S-400 missiles to its Hmeymim air base in Syria, which is less than 30 miles away from the Turkish border. With a range of 155 miles, the missiles – armed with conventional or nuclear warheads -- could hit a wide swath of Turkish territory. With both Putin and Erdogan blaming each other for the incident, the Syrian civil war has expanded with the entry of Russian and Turkish military forces. At the end of the day, unless cooler heads bring Russia and Turkey to the peace table, the situation could explode into a war nobody wants to start. And by the time they realize that they had irreversibly set in motion the events that would lead to the annihilation of mankind, it’s too late. At that time, they can only pray.

Justin Trudeau is Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister

A maple-coated Filipino Heart by Erlinda

Dolly Tan

erlindatan@yahoo.com

Liberal party leader Justin Trudeau became Canada’s 23rd prime minister after a landslide victory in the recently concluded federal election. Coming from third in the surveys when campaign started in August, he emerged as the winner and created a majority government winning 184 parliament seats. The Conservatives came out second with 99 seats, followed by the NDP with 44 seats.

Trudeau, who was branded by the Conservatives in a TV advertisement as “not ready,” proved himself during the campaign that he was ready. The longest campaign in Canadian history that lasted 11 weeks or 78 days became an advantage for him as he found time to connect

with the voters and explain his platforms. He excelled on TV debates watched by millions. His campaign slogan of “Real Change” resonated with the voters who sought for change after almost ten years of Conservatives’ rule. His campaign platforms

araming mga magulang na hindi napapansin na marami sa mga itinuturo nila sa kanilang mga anak sa pang-araw-araw na buhay ay malaki ang nagiging epekto sa pagiging mapanghusga ng mga ito. Different parents have their own style in teaching or raising their children. And most often, bigotry begins here without the parents' noticing it. As examples, the moment a parent teaches his/her child that pink is only for girls and blue for boys, his child will start to

limit his idea of color-sexuality association, and this will naturally translates into being a judgmental person. Naturally, when the child has been taught that only girls could wear pink boots or could have long hair, the moment he sees someone doing the opposite, he will think that what this person is doing is wrong. He will start to tease or make fun of or question the sexuality of his boy playmates who wear something pink or who have long hair. The moment a parent teaches her children that something is wrong, the children will grow up thinking that that something is indeed wrong; and every time they see other people doing that, they will have the tendency to judge those people negatively because they have been led to believe that what these people are doing is wrong. So, as a parent, be careful with what you are teaching your children. If it is something that involves choice and preference, you should be clear about that. If you don’t like your young son to have long hair or to wear pink boots, for instance, just don’t let them without the need to invent judgmental reasons; no need to

tell them “Oh, you should not wear that because that’s only for girls.” Because the moment you do this, you have instilled in his mind that a boy wearing

include increasing taxes for the rich 1% Canadians and decreasing the taxes of the middle class. He promised to build infrastructure projects to create jobs and counter the on-going oil recession. He courted the immigrants promising them fast family reunification by speeding up the process of family visa. Some of his controversial policies include, defending the Muslim women for wearing niqab during the citizenship oath taking, which was banned by the Conservative government. Trudeau said, “I believe that if a man cannot impose his will on how a woman dresses, we should not have a state that imposes how a woman shouldn’t dress.” One of his popular slogans was, “We are strong not despite our diversity but because of it.” He likewise made a controversial stand on Canadians convicted of terrorism, he said they should not be deported but

should be tried in Canada. The deportation of convicted terrorists holding dual citizenships is a policy of the Conservative government. Trudeau said: “A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian.” Nonetheless, his stand on controversial issues didn’t hinder a landslide victory for his party. Even his stand on legalizing marijuana was accepted by the voters. His charisma and being a Trudeau helped a lot. His father was prime minister of Canada from 1968 to 1979 and again from 1980 to 1984. His popularity was then called “Trudeaumania.” No doubt his son inherited lots of his charisma. Anywhere he goes, people surround him for selfie, which he happily complies. Trudeau was sworn in as official Prime Minister of Canada on November 4, 2015. His mother, wife and children, were present during the ceremony.

stuff for their male children. The point is, teach them that colors, hairstyles, and many other things are simply a matter of personal preference; and that everyone should have the right to choose what they feel looks good on them without the worry of getting teased or ridiculed about it. If you don’t like your son to wear something pink, then you have the right to do so; but don’t lead your son to believe that the reason you are not letting him wear pink is because wearing pink for a boy is wrong. Just tell him that you don’t like it for him because of personal preference. This way, you are giving consideration to parents who have different sets of preference. This way, even if your child sees a male classmate who is wearing pink, he will not tease him or make fun of him. He will know that anyone could wear whatever color they want and that they’re being different from each other does not mean that someone picked a wrong choice.

Undas 2015 a Huge Success! Edmonton - Dubbed as “UNDAS 2015 Sa EVERGREEN” the Edmonton Filipino Community celebrated UNDAS (TODOS LOS SANTOS or ALL SAINTS/ ALL-SOULS DAY) for the second straight year last October 31, 2015. More than 200 Edmonton Filipino Community members and friends attended at Edmonton’s Evergreen Cemetery and Funeral Home Centre and witnessed Filipino Priest Rev. Fr. NILO MACAPINLAC preside over the Liturgical and Memorial Services and the traditional of the FILIPINO GARDEN (HIMLAYANG FILIPINO), the MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEARLY DEPARTED and the “EXPRESSION OF THOUGHTS & LOVE for our Dearly Departed (a novel concept started this year). When interviewed and asked what prompted him to revive the UNDAS Tradition in Edmonton, Event Organizer HERMO T. PAGTAKHAN, Family Services Director with ARBOR MEMORIAL at EVERGREEN, explained: “UNDAS (or TODOS LOS SANTOS or ALL SAINTS DAY) is the Third biggest and most celebrated Philippine national holiday after Christmas and Holy Week/Easter. Christian Filipinos customarily remember, honor, and pay respect to the dearly departed on All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). The grave sites are cleaned, visited, and adorned by family members, relatives and friends on the eve of November 1, to stay at the cemetery, to light candles, to pray, to lay flowers, and bring food for the consumption of the attendees. The UNDAS Tradition is one of the cultural anchors helping the Filipinos define their national character. It is a durable venue for Filipino cultures and expressions and is a symbol of Filipino sense of community. No matter in what corner of the world we may be, we remain truly Filipino” “Let’s face it, as much as we would want to, most of us Filipinos residing or working overseas (including those in Canada) are unable to go back to the Philippines every year to honour our Dearly

Departed. A lot of our Filipino "Kababayans" here in Edmonton have been asking me through the years WHY We as a Community DO NOT Celebrate here in Edmonton a very important and significant Philippine National and Religious Holiday. So I thought our Community should revive our own UNDAS celebration this year in Edmonton. In short, I thought of reviving the UNDAS Tradition to afford our Kababayans the opportunity to celebrate All Saints Day in remembrance of our Dearly Departed whether buried in Edmonton or elsewhere.” I also wish to mention and announce at this juncture that EVERGREEN MEMORIAL GARDEN was generous enough to donate and dedicate a Spot and erected a Rock Memorial Shrine in honour of the Filipino Community in Edmonton which we named “HIMLAYANG FILIPINO” (Filipino Garden). NOW, The Edmonton Filipino Community has a FOCAL POINT ("HIMLAYANG FILIPINO/ FILIPINO GARDEN) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where they can VISIT, OFFER FLOWERS, PAY RESPECT, PRAY and REMEMBER their Dearly Departed irrespective

of where they are buried and lay in rest. For this I would like to thank MR. BRENT HATTON, Manager of EVERGREEN MEMORIAL GARDENS (shown in this Photo with Hermo and Baida Pagtakhan), MR. GEORGE MONTPETIT, Manager of EVERGREEN FUNERAL HOMES and MR. RICHARD ERDMAN OF EVERGREEN PROPERTY for their Valuable Support and making My Dream of having a FOCAL POINT for the FILIPINO COMMUNITY IN EDMONTON a REALITY! MY DEAR KABABAYANS, the HIMLAYANG FILIPINO (FILIPINO GARDEN) Memorial Marker is NOT meant just for Families who have their Dearly Departed at EVERGREEN. The HIMLAYANG FILIPINO Memorial was put up in Honour of the EDMONTON FILIPINO COMMUNITY and to provide Us with a Solemn FOCAL POINT for our Dearly Departed to honour them and celebrate All Saints Day and Special Occasions such as MOTHER'S DAY, FATHER'S DAY, REMEMBRANCE DAY etc. NOW, The Edmonton Filipino Community has a FOCAL POINT where WE can VISIT, LIGHT A CANDLE, OFFER FLOWERS, PAY RESPECT, PRAY and REMEMBER OUR Dearly

Departed irrespective of where they are buried and lay in rest. True to my initial Concept, we made sure the whole Edmonton Filipino community including the various community organizations were involved in the Celebration. We at EVERGREEN Memorial Gardens just provided the Place (Our Chapel and Reception Centre) to hold the Event, as well as, a Focal Point in the HIMLAYANG .” The UNDAS Event started with Mrs. FE VILLAMAYOR (of the Dearly Departed. This was immediately followed by the Celebration of the Liturgical and Memorial Services officiated by Fr. MACAPINLAC which included Holy Scripture Readings by Ms. LIANNE ANGELES and Mrs. BETH MORALES, Prayers of the Faithful led by MRS. REBECCA LASQUETY, Ceremonial Lighting of the Memorial Candles by Mr. JUN ANGELES (OMNI TV FILIPINO), Mrs. MARILDA KANE (FILIPINO SUPPORT SERVICES and CEFA) and Mrs. ELOISA LAU and the Blessing of the MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEARLY DEPARTED and the SPECIAL THOUGHTS & EXPRESSION OF LOVE FOR OUR DEARLY DEPARTED.

The FANTASTIC ST. JOHN’S MEN’S CHOIR led the Singing at the Chapel. THE AMAZING KORO FILIPINO and TALENTED GERALD PENACO provided the Entertainment during the Reception. The Highlight of the Celebration was the Blessing by Fr. MACAPINLAC of the FILIPINO GARDEN HIMLAYANG FILIPINO and the interment of the Special Container of the SPECIAL THOUGHTS & EXPRESSION OF LOVE for the DEARLY DEPARTED. The attendees were thereafter treated to a sumptuous Luncheon of Filipino food and delicacies complete with Lechon. Because of the Tremendous Success of this year’s UNDAS everybody is already looking forward this early to a much bigger UNDAS Celebration in 2016. HERMO PAGTAKHAN, Organizer of the ANNUAL FILIPINO COMMUNITY UNDAS CELEBRATION announced plans to build at the HIMLAYANG FILIPINO, a WALL OF REMEMBRANCE which will contain engraved Names of the Dearly Departed to be registered by Families with properties at ARBOR MEMORIAL.

Foodie Files: Manila Food Trip

I

t's been a couple years since I've been back in Manila. This time, it was for my cousin's wedding and a new found passion for discovering the best of the Manila food scene. My father's new food business, Hot Rod's Filipino Grill has been quite the ride over the summer as I've been helping out as an unofficial taste tester. In addition to checking out new restaurants in Manila, I was also on a mission to find out what the hype was all about with the PureFoods Tender Juicy red hot dogs. After some online research and running into a PureFood chef at Trinoma Mall in Quezon City, it was confirmed that the PF TJ hot dogs are artificially coloured. All throughout my trip, street vendors were hawking red hot dogs in addition to the regular Pinoy street food. My first foray at the restaurants along Maginhawa was BRGR Project Burger where I was able to customize my own burger and even give it a name. There were so many options it was dizzying. I ended up naming my

burger the Rizal Burger and it was delicious. Provenciano Restaurant was a formal dining restaurant featured a Filipiniana-Spanish offering an ambiance that reminded me of the colonial Spanish decor found in my grandparent's rural residence - quite nostalgic. A quick visit to the University of the Philippines campus found us at the Mang Larry's Famous Isawan stall. The line-up for the

famous and most authentic Pinoy street food made me appreciate the "Isaw Pa More" love-in we've seen at Hot Rod's in Winnipeg. I didn't venture too far from home because the traffic to get anywhere in Manila these days is downright painful. Lilac Street in Marikina City offered just as many food options. Too

many options actually, and never enough time. Sr. Pedro's Lechon Manok might be a small stand but the chicken and liempo are mouth watering delicious. Sorry Baliwag and Andok's, I have a new love. In fact, there are a lot more restaurants in Marikina that I'll have to save for another time. Kain na tayo!

Tried asking Purefood’s chef for the recipe, he declined and offered me a Tender Juicy King size red hot dog.

The Statue of the Black Nazarene Revere by Hundreds of Catholic Devotees in Edmonton by Jun Angeles

Archbishop Richard Smith celebrating the Holy Mass.

The Replica of the Black Nazarene

T

he Filipino-Canadian Catholic community in Edmonton marbled the arrival of the miraculous replica of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo. This replica was intricately curved by Benjamin Bagalso of Paete, Laguna in the Philippines. A year curved out of labor and love; finally crossed thousands of miles and nestled in the hands of the Knights of Columbus, Nazareno Council of Edmonton. And on the

evening of Thursday November 12, 2015 at St. John the Evangelist Church, the statue was blessed by Archbishop Richard Smith. A mass

was officiated by the Archbishop attended by a overflowed capacity of approximately 700 devotees. After the blessing, a procession ensued several blocks around the church and finally the statue rested at the foot of the altar for adoration. The statue was touched by the hands and feet, while tears flowed on the eyes of some devotees. This historic evening will be itched in the annals of the Filipino Community that will be remembered by the Filipinos and Canadians. The original Black Nazarene (Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno) was brought to the Philippines from Acapulco, Mexico over 400 years ago, and according to the legend was charred by a fire on board the galleon. On the Feast of Black Nazarene, the statute is usually brought out of the shrine for public veneration every January 9 after New Year and every Good Friday in the Philippines. Considered a miraculous image of Jesus, the Black Nazarene is an icon symbolic of deep faith of Filipinos and relate their poverty and daily struggles. The Black Nazarene is celebrated and venerated all over the world including Australia and United States.

The Advent of Jesus The Black Nazarene in Edmonton: Conspicuously Seen Behind the Scene.

Lesson-Driven Perspective Lito Mendoza Velasco litovelasco65@yahoo.ca Lito Velasco, Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy A homoviator, a catalyst of change. He moves in the light of his Philosophical, Political and Theological backgrounds. He loves challenges and believes he learns and improves his critical thinking from those challenges.

I

t is always a good habit to give meaning to what we are doing. But it is more brilliant if an ardent devotion in achieving the explanation to our queries would radically be derived from the Divine Intervention. There is and there has been a guy whose prophetic vision has not merely ignited inside his very self but has affected numerous people in Edmonton. The profound expression of his vision is conspicuously manifested in his mission—that is, to contribute to the Unification of Christian believers in Edmonton and all the Nations. He found the meaning of his life by adhering to the Christian Values which he inherently acquired from his family heritage and being nurtured inside the Seminary where he spent portion of his teenage life. He said to us during the interview that he did not plan anything to do something but rather he submitted and became committed to the Plan.! ! Unveiling the Truth: Who They are and who leads them. Truth is two-sided. One has to be known and the other exists independently of the knower. Talent-wise, one is inborn and the other is trained. He who sings can sing well if he reads the note. This is not to discredit those who sing by ears. This is quite parallel to Leading the leaders.

An authentically inborn leader, despite his charism, has to be developed and well equipped with the necessary tools in leading. His plans have to be accepted in order to be embraced and implemented. The Revelation: His Background At this point, the Alberta Filipino Journal, is revealing the truth about the guy behind the series of successes that the Edmontonians are enjoying throughthe vital projects and community involvements of the Knights of Columbus, Nazareno Council. The Proximate Cause behind the Nazareno Council’s existence: His Biography FULL NAME: JULITO ROQUE REYES BIRTDATE: June 16, 1943 BIRTHPLACE: Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija FATHER: Jose P. Reyes -Superintendent of Schools, Mauban, Quezon, 1971 - 1972. Catholic leader in Zaragoza and Cabanatuan. Died in August 1972 due to terrible flood in Luzon while delivering two Army truckload of relief goods “Mission of Mercy” to the victims. His tragic death occurred when the driversoldier accidentally hit the mango tree. MOTHER: Angelina Roque Reyes, Businesswoman, Catholic leader at Saint Vincent Ferrer Parish, Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija. MARRIED TO: Julieta BautistaReyes CHILDREN: Jane, Jason, and Jolene (All born in Edmonton) EDUCATION: Minor Seminary: Mater Boni Consilii Seminary, Apalit, Pampanga - Archdiocese of San Fernando ( comprising Pampanga, Tarlac & Nueva Ecija); Zaragoza High School. University of Santo Tomas – Bachelor of Education,1963 University of Alberta – Bachelor of Education,1972

WORK HISTORY: Teacher at the College of Immaculate Conception High School in Cabanatuan City, 1963 Teacher at Nueva Ecija High School in Cabanatuan City, 1964 – 1967 Teacher: Warburg Elementary School, 1967-1975 Teacher: Leduc Schools, 19752000 YEAR ARRIVED IN CANADA / PLACE: July 4, 1967 - 1973 / Warburg, Alberta PREVIOUS RESIDENCE: Leduc, Alberta - 1973 - 2014 CURRENT RESIDENCE: Edmonton, Alberta MEMBERSHIP TO THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: October 1985 SOCIO-CIVIC INVOLVEMENTS: Leduc Lions Club since 1970 - Member Riverbend Lions Club, Edmonton - Charter Vice President in 1972. RELIGIOUS COMMITMENTS: Leduc Knights of Columbus 1986 – 2001 Deputy Grand Knight, Grand Knight St. Michael Parish Council, Leduc - 1995 - 1998 President Alberta-NWT State Council District Deputy for four councils; State Program Director, State Warden, State Advocate,State Secretary, and State Deputy (1999- 2001); Master of the Fourth Degree, 2004-2008. GUIDING PRINCIPLE: “I shall pass this world but once. Any good deed therefore that I can do and kindness that I can show; I will never procrastinate, deter, nor neglect them, for I shall not pass this way again.” The beauty and greatness of any creation always relies on who stands behind it. God is very known to using a Mediator when accomplishing a noble purpose. He always plays as the Ultimate Cause and using for example, the disciples, as the proximate cause in the propagation of His Divine Plan on earth. In this case, Brother Lito Reyes’ background was taken into account as the vital proof of this Salvific Mission. This is one thing that the members and whoever wants to become the member of the Nazareno Council has to be proud of. You are quite blessed for having him as your contemporary prophet. The Commissioning and Inspiration: The Establishment of Nazareno Council 12904 Bro. Lito Reyes said: “The Nazareno Knights of Columbus 2001, was organized during my" second term as State Deputy in 2001. My first contact was Bro. Teddy Tuazon, a long time member" of the Knights of Coulumbus starting in Pateros, Rizal (Phil.) council; and then, Edmonton" District Deputy

Brother Knight Pedro ( Bong) Estoque. With these 2 people onside, I invited" Bro. Vince Reyes and Bro. Francisco Tobias of St. Peter Council No. 7070, Millwoods; Fr." Nestor Watin ( a Filipino) of Camrose Parish, who became the Charter Chaplain; Fr. Michael" J. Troy, State Chaplain and of course , Archbishop Thomas Collins who gave us permission" to hold Filipino Masses in Edmonton Churches. The four of us started a series of strategic" planning meetings in February 2001 on the formation of a new Filipino council and finally " had the required number to form a council in March 2001 Charter (with 60 plus Charter" members) was given to us by Supreme Council from New Haven, CT on April 8th, 2001.” The Advent of Jesus the Black Nazarene to our Council: The Ideogenesis Sir Knight Lito Reyes continues: “I was thinking of a gift that the members could give to the Council on its 15th Charter Council Anniversary on the 8th of April 2016. Our Council’s name is Nazareno and what a fitting gift to have a wooden statue of Jesus, the Black Nazarene. So that would be our gift to our council! I knew that wooden carvings are done in Paete , Laguna. I started a checking around who could be contacted. Brother Kit Garcia informed me about Manang Lita Rabacal who used to work at the University of Alberta and had retired in Paete, Laguna. I got her Philippine phone number from

Baticulin which needed to dry for five weeks. I introduced the idea to few Nazareno officers and members and they thought it was a great idea to have a replica of Jesus Nazareno in our midst. I ordered the statue and was in constant communication with Benjie. Grand Knight Robert and wife, Teresa were in the Philippines in July 2015 and I requested them to go to Paete to pick up the statue, which they agreed. They returned to Edmonton on August 15, 2015 in the evening. We met them at the airport with many brother knights & their wives. The statue was inside a Balikabayan box and I drove it back to Grand Knight Robert’s home where we opened it.The following Sunday around 2 PM, we assembled the statue inside the St. John the Evangelist Church.” Brother Lito mentioned during the interview at Palabok House on November 11, 2015, that while he was trying to think of something that would benefit the Nazareno Council and its members; there was no idea coming up in his mind, yet when he chose to just take a moment of silence and opted to consider himself as an empty shell, then a light has formed and contained his mind with the image of the Black Nazarene’s image. Truly, he continued, that he was obviously inspired and commissioned by the Holy Spirit. olerance and diversity, windmills and cheese, canals and bridges, museums and century-old buildings, history and culture, Anne Frank and Van Gogh: this is Amsterdam in a nutshell. By the number Amsterdam has 31 museums, 141 art galleries, 165 canals, 1,281 bridges, 881,000 bicycles, 177 nationalities, 2,367,809 metropolitan area residents, and 15,749,000 annual visitors,. Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (frequently called Holland). However, The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government (a constitutional monarchy with his Majesty Willem Alexander as King since 2013) and not Amsterdam.

October - November 2015

Founded as a fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam derives its name from "Amstelredamme" (literally, a dam of the river Amstel). We have had the opportunity to visit twice this beautiful city during the months of August and October when the temperature is cooler and crowd is sparser. After exiting the Amsterdam Central Railway Station the first sight to see is the "Damrak", often called the "Red Carpet" of the train station, a bustling avenue full of cafes, terraces, department stores, and shops that takes us to the famous "Dam Square", the historical centre and the beating heart of the city jostling with tourists and locals and hundreds of pigeons. If you miss Dam Square you haven't seen Amsterdam!

Gem & Lita beside a "I amsterdam" tourism logo

There are plenty of sights to see both in and around the square. The must-see in the square is the baroque-style Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis), once the town hall, then as official residence of the Dutch Royal family and now used occasionally for entertaining and official functions. Next to the palace is the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) no longer used for church services but is now the site of Royal coronations and weddings and other royal investiture ceremonies and also final resting place of Dutch naval heroes. Next to the New Church is the magnificent Magna Plaza, once the city's main post office and later transformed in 1992 into a shopping centre. Its the place to shop for designer clothing and fashion accessories. Opposite the palace you'll see the 5-star Hotel Krasnapolsky The dominant feature of the Dam Square is the 72-ft. tall limestone obelisk-shaped National Memorial Monument erected in memory of Dutch soldiers who perished in World War II. Also in the square is the trendy renowned department store Bijenkorf, the multi-brand fashion store Bonneteire, "Beurs van Berlage" (an old stock exchange which now serves as a concert hall and exhibition space), and the Amsterdam Diamond Centre (Amsterdam has a worldwide reputation for its diamond cutting industry). There's so much to tell about we'll continue our tour of Amsrterdam on the next issue. TRIVIA: The Dutch are the tallest people in the world. The average Dutchman is just over 6 feet, while Dutch women average 5-foot-7!
