Miranda Foods will rise from the ashes

I

by Rod Escobar Cantiveros

t took nineteen years to build Miranda Foods and it took more than four hours to be destroyed it by arson. “The only blessing we have is that we got off alive and well,” says Emilio Miranda, the owner and proprietor of Miranda Foods, a Filipino store which had become so popular in the area among the Filipinos and other new immigrants especially from the African nations. “Yes, we lost everything we owned including our personal keepsakes, our mementoes, my wife’s jewelry, even my cell-phone and my denim pants. We do feel as if we were naked,” he said with a bitter smile. It was in the early morning Saturday while waiting for their daughter to arrive from the party, Emilio smell a smoke. And immediately called 911 and reported in incident.. As per

instruction by the 911 Operator, his wife, Nitz woke up their son, Junjun who was sleeping in his bedroom, and with a flash of minutes while the smoke had becoming so intense, they were able to escape and witnessed the spread the fire in the building from the sidewalks. Firefighters came and started fighting the blaze. “It was so devastating to see your business and your dwellings razed by fire,” Emil said with bitterness. “We were planning to pickup our daughter that time but when we phoned Jil, she told me that she would just go home. If we had decided to pick-up our daughter and we left Junjun sleeping in his bedroom, the thought of what would have happened to him still gives me a chill,” Emilio said with a shade of tears. “For us, we are all together in spite of the fire which gutted our business and shattered our lives.”

When their daughter Jil arrived from the party, she was welcomed by the intense heat and bellowing smoke. Looking at the crowd, she found her mom and her brother Junjun together and she tried to look for his dad.”I started crying because I did not see my Dad and I had in my mind of what might had happened to him, but gladly, thanks heaven, i saw him coming,” said Jil with tears in her eyes. CTV crew recognized Jil as a young debutante who celebrated her 18th birthday feeding the needy people at Siloam Missions instead of the usual debutante’s party. “But we will rebuild the Miranda Foods, and I am very thankful for many people who had comforted us of our loss, and the many assurances and support from his friends and customers,” Emilio said. “This is my favorite store. This is where we buy our meat, our food, and the family owners are very friendly and accommodating. And their meat is cheap and their service to the customer is great,” said Ric, his neighbor who lives in the apartment across the store. Upon seeing the demolished building, many passersby looked at the eerie scenery. They would like to know if those people living on the second floor were able to escape. Upon learning that the family of four was safe, one lady said: “Thanks God and this will be

‘Bwakaw’ is PH’s bet in Oscar awards

T

he Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) recently announced the official selection of “Bwakaw” as the country’s nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 85th Academy Awards (The Oscars) to be held next year. The Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Committee which will evaluate films from participating countries and will announce the official nominations and awards on Jan. 15 and Feb. 24, respectively. The critically-acclaimed film by awardwinning writer-director Jun Lana participated in the 2012 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival where it won the Audience Choice and Netpac Awards, as well as Best Actor (for Eddie Garcia) under the Director’s Showcase segment. The film had its international premiere at the recently held Toronto International Film Festival under its Contemporary World Cinema Section.

The worldwide rights for international screening of “Bwakaw” have been bought by Fortissimo Films, a multi-national film production and sales and distribution company. Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner was quoted as saying that “Bwakaw” is one of those rare films with universal appeal that will transcend language, nationality, class, gender and age. International reviews by some film critics abroad have also given “Bwakaw” the affirmation. These include reviews by the Film Society of Lincoln Center for the 50th New York Film Festival, Hollywood Reporter, and Twitch Film. The film starring veteran actor Eddie Garcia tells the amusing and touching story of an old homosexual who was forced to come to terms with himself and growing old alone with the sole company of his faithful dog.

Lamoureux conducts immigration workshops in the Philippines

M

ember of the Parliament Kevin Lamoureux will be leaving for the Philippines on October 9 to hold immigration workshops in various cities. With some possible changes in the nominee program and other immigration programs like visiting, student and working visas, Lamoureux will give complete information to those who are planning to immigrate to Canada. And it is a free immigration workshop. "I want to be with those

applicants who want to know firsthand about the Manitoba provincial nominee program and other related immigration programs. And i have been doing this workshop in the Philippines and i am happy that we have extended our help to ease down the burden of finding the best possible information they need to pursue their plans to immigrate to Canada. With my workshops, the probable applicants will be comfortable to discuss some problems or difficulties they have or might encounter. And i want to point out, there is no admission fee...

libre!" says Lamoureux who has been going to the Philippines at least once a year. "And I love the hospitality of our Filipino friends," he added. "Our latest visit was a great experience for me and for my wife, Cathy. The following workshop schedules are as follows: Cebu City - October 9, Tuesday; San Fernando, Pampanga- Oct. 12; Angono, RizalOct 13; and Batangas City- October 14 Registration is necessary to minimize any delay during the workshops. just like a second lives for them. With that fire which spread so quickly, escaping in that second floor was between life and death.” As reported by the police, the fire started at the rear and upon investigation, some pranks had set fire on the garbage bins and the fire spread to the building and it seems that most of the fires would start from the garbage bins being burned. Estimated damage to the property is more than $1 million dollars. The Miranda Foods started in 1993 when two Miranda families, Emilio and Dino Miranda, together with their spouses, Nitz and Lourdes, founded the business. A good combination for the two brothers to start a Filipino store, Dino worked with a meat processing company while Emil worked as a manager of

Macs Convenience at Corydon and Renfrew,. It was a perfect mix to operate store in the West End. The family business has been accepted by the Filipinos and other Canadian customers. When a new wave of immigrants arrived mostly coming from the African nations, Miranda Foods has become the store for them especially when the owners started carrying halal meat and other African products. “Yes, I love this store. And I will miss the meat, the service, Emil and his staff. And I do believe that Miranda Foods will rise from the ashes..just like Phoenix rising from the dark ashes. They are great people to deal with, now, I have to find another store to serve our needs,” one of the AfricanCanadians who came to see the ruins of Miranda Foods. Two days after the conflagration which destroyed their business and dwellings, the family members and supporters

visited the site. Some had tears in their eyes, and some had to find some consolations that Miranda Foods will rise again from this ruin. “Sa sunog, walang sinisino,” one of the relatives said. (“Fire destroys anybody, anything, no one is exempted.”) “Thanks God that all of you are safe and alive.” “Emil, see that pair of pants hanging, that’s yours!” Nitz said pointing to the denim pants hanging among the ruins. “I do hope that pair of pants has my wallet,” looking at the place where the pair of denim pants. And he found something on the ground, a plastic scrapper of fat of the meat. “Oh, this is the only one I saved,” holding it while a photo is taken. Plans are now being discussed with their insurance adjuster. Emil and Nitz promise that they will rebuild their business. And they want to extend their heartfelt thanks for all the supports they received from their relatives, friends and customers.

UFC IS SHUFFLIN’

L

MFAO’s lyric from Party Rock Anthem, “everyday I’m shufflin’” has to be the theme that plays in the heads of Dana White and Joe Silva for most of 2012. Match maker Joe Silva is constantly shuffling the fight cards this year due to many injuries sidelining fighters. 2012 has been particularly bad for this, as the injury bug seemed to target the big name fighters in main and co-main events. One fight card could not be saved at all. UFC 151 was to take place September 1 with the main event being a

championship match between Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon “Bones” Jones defending against number one contender, Dan Henderson. Unfortunately, Henderson hurt his knee and didn’t let UFC brass know until 8 days before the event. On short notice, former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen stepped up to take the fight. The champ, Jones, felt that it was not enough notice to prepare and did not want to put up his title, so he turned the fight down. This lead to Dana White and the UFC to pull the plug and cancel an event for the first time in 11 years.

All these injuries are giving fans fights that are either more favorable or match ups they wouldn’t normally see. Michael Bisping was to fight Tim Boetsch, while Brian Stann was to welcome Bellator Middleweight Champion, Hector Lombard to the octagon. Bisping and Stann both got injured leaving Boetsch to fight Lombard. This lead to the favorable fight between Bisping and Stann at UFC 152. All this shuffling from injuries has also lead to a few head-scratchers in terms of fights. UFC 152’s main event is Jon Jones defending his Light Heavyweight Championship against now former middleweight, Vitor Belfort. After Henderson dropped out, and Jones turned down Sonnen, the fight was moved to September 22, and the title shot was offered to Lyoto Machida. By knocking out Ryan Bader at UFC on FOX 5, Machida earned the next shot at the belt, so it was surprising that he turned down the fight saying he needed time to prepare. Vitor Belfort was more than happy to move up in weight and take the

Filipino Journal

championship opportunity on short notice. Eric Koch was to fight Jose Aldo for the Featherweight Championship in Calgary. Injuries forced that fight a few months later at UFC in Brazil. An injury to Koch lead to a dream match between Aldo and former Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar. However, that was too good to be true. A foot injury due to a motorcycle accident took Aldo out of the main event. UFC was shuffling again, and middleweight champion, Anderson Silva stepped up and said he’d fight on the card. Best they could do was

9

find him a 205lb match against Stephan Bonnar. Oh, and in case you’re keeping score, the comain event of the card was to feature Rampage Jackson, but he had to pull out due to an elbow injury. Now the co-main event is Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira taking on Dave “Peewee” Herman. All these injuries leading to all this shuffling was no easy task for Dana White, Joe Silva and the UFC. Doing their best, they made fights that may not necessarily make sense in terms of rankings, but found a way to fill them with exciting fighters and fights we all thought we would never see.

FBA-NA Team Winnipeg 14U Champions

O

ver the Labour Day long weekend, Vaughan Ontario played host to the 8th annual Filipino Basketball Association of North America tournament. 105 teams from across the US and Canada competed in 12 different division for basketball glory. Of these 12 divisions, this years tournament introduced the newly formed Bantam Girls 14U division. FBA Team Winnipeg brought 11teams to the annual tournament and battled for bragging rights and a chance of taking home the gold. On this weekend, FBA Winnipegs new Bantam Girls 14U team came in prepared and hopeful as none of the teams knew anything about the other. Being a new division, team Winnipeg had no idea what the competition was like. To make it more challenging, team Winnipeg brought the youngest team into the tournament ranging from 1114 years old. Winnipeg lost their first game by a mere 2pts to a stronger older Mississauga team. Because

the FBA tournament is a double elimination format Winnipeg had to battle their way back onto the winners side. Teams from Vaughan, New York, Chicago and Durham made it an extremely tough road as team Winnipeg won by only 2-3 points to face team New York in the finals. Winnipeg’s constant full court pressure throughout the game held off the New York teams intense attack to the basket and Winnipeg came through victorious winning 37-34 to claim FBA-NA's first Bantam 14U Championship. Congratulations to the following members and coaches that represented our city with pride and passion... Head coach: Arsenio dela Cruz Assistant coach: Eldrin Geli and Carter dela Cruz. Also, a big congrats to Raizel Guinto foe being awarded tournament MVP. Our teams success would not be possible without the following... Special thanks goes out to WAAY league, PBA of Winnipeg, Ron Quintana of the Garden City Community Center, Derek Dabee of Maples Community Center, Natasha Garcia of Pinnacle, Michelle Fontaine of Shoppers Drug Mart and Basketball Manitoba. Team Winnipeg is now looking forward to next years tournament in Washington DC to defend the title and bring back the gold. Tryouts for next years team will be posted on waay.ca and pbawinnipeg.net

Plagiarism—whether the copying was intentional or not— remains plagiarism—and this is the greatest sin a writer could commit—the second, being incorrect grammar, and this is a separate issue. So, two tips that I may suggest are—every time a writer copies a paragraph or even a sentence word-for-word (verbatim) from another writer's work, an encyclopedia, a book, or any reference at all, the writer must ensure that she encloses the copied portion within quotation marks. Second, use as an opening phrase "According to..." or "In the book... [title of book]...." Third, and most important, attribute the quoted material by citing the source—name of the book, Internet site, and/or the author/ writer. Those are all it takes to avoid the pitfall of plagiarism. I can either define honesty in my own words (based on my correct knowledge about it) so I don't need to use quotations or references; as in the following sentence, which is my own: Honesty is the virtue of not telling a lie. However, if I wanted to give the definition of honesty word-for-word as it is defined in a respectable source such as a dictionary or an encyclopedia, then I need to give citation and to enclose the definition in quotation marks; for example: On dictionary.com, honesty is defined as "the quality or fact of being honest." Or According to Wikipedia, honesty is "a facet of moral character and denotes positive, virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness, and straightforwardness along with

The Last Leaf Many writers—bloggers or even professional ones—think that they could copy portions from sources and from other people's works just like that, without citing their sources or references and without using quotation marks whenever they copy excerpts word-for-word. Maybe they do this to appear smart and authoritative and to impress others, failing to realize that presenting a well-referenced piece of written work makes them more impressive, more authoritative, and more credible. According to Wikipedia, "plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as the 'wrongful appropriation,' 'close imitation,' or 'purloining and publication' of another author's 'language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions,' and the representation of them as one's own original work."

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros

The beauty and excitement of Manitoba summers!

S

ummer time and the living is easy..." an iconic song inspires the Filipinos in Winnipeg especially the bagong dating (new comers), to discover the many festivals, heritage parks and places and points of interests in Manitoba and in Winnipeg and its environs. Indeed, the Manitoba's festivals and celebrations have become the best events and activities during the length of summer. Somewhere in the length of summer, excitement and memorable experiences are in store for you. You do not need to fly to Florida, or to Las Vegas or to Caribbean Islands to enjoy what summer has to offer. Go for local tourism and it's worth the trip! And the Filipino Journal, its management and staff, for many summers, has become the front and centre to bring our kababayans to the various festivals, heritage parks, and point of interests. Other groups sent also their summer activities like the San Jose Fiesta. And a welcome picnic given by QPAM members to the visiting Filipino Californians. One of the visitors is my best friend during my teaching years at UST when we were, together with my brother, Jessie, living in Manila with some of our cousins, the Angeles family whose members now living in Edmonton. I was surprised to see Mely Salvador in Winnipeg for the past 30 years. She is a relative of the Aquilars of Agdangan, Quezon and of Winnipeg. The Filipino Journal already published our visit to Narcisse' garter snake pit where you can cuddle the garter snake. We had fun looking and touching those "friendly serpents";

and our visit to the Lower Fort Gary museum where the new immigrants and Winnipeggers joined to retrace the glory days of the last part of the 1800's.Some "old timers" said that this is the first time to see this historic beginning of the City of Winnipeg. That visit to Lower Fort Gary brought us "back to the future" scenario. Also published recently is our trip to the Morden Corn and Apple Festival which has been a yearly event for the bagong datings and for the corn and apple cider lovers! From the start of the trip, games were held and prizes were given. And back to Winnipeg, a bingo game was held. It was a doubly fun and a rewarding trip. More gifts and free sweet corn were part of the excitements. Lately, the management and staff and volunteers of the Filipino Journal went to attend the Altona Sunflower Festival. We enjoyed the parade but to my surprise, not even one fresh sunflower was present during the parade. What we had seen were Altonians, their beauties, fire trucks, some organizations, and most important, farming machineries. We found few silk sunflower in one of the floats but it did not fully define why the festival centers on the sunflower! You would be surprised to see our "Ladies On Wheels", Lucille Nolasco, Veron Opina and Carolina Rodriguez to have a space inside the big rims of the farm tractor. Altona has a garden museum, farmer's market and mini-fair. "Where can we find sunflower as big as my face?", I asked one of the Altona officials.

"You'll find those big sunflowers along the highway leading to Altona."We did find the sunflower fields and we had a great time capturing the beautiful sunflower, mostly, bigger than my face. And we did stop where the Wind Power stations are situated, along Highway 14! Some had a face to face with wheat plant! "Wow, this is my first time to see and touch a wheat plant," said one of the old timers. Our next stop is Oak Hammock Marsh, an interpretative centre for Wildlife Management. We saw the vast network of marshes and birds and fowls and wide variety of plants and flowers. Snack time at this wonderful place where you can have a quiet moment and a solemn communion with nature. What a beautiful place to see and to engage with the wildlife. As we headed to Winnipeg, we did pass Morris, Manitoba where stampede festival is being held every year and it is one of the summer attraction in the Southern Manitoba. I did explain also the St. Norbert Museum where you can find the 1st cold storage used during the 1800's. And to complete the day's trip, we side tripped to the former "Our Lady of the Prairie" at St. Norbert. A place formerly occupied by the Trappists. The church ruins have become the favorite wedding photos shots because of its beauty

september 20 - October 5, 2012

and the serene surrounding near La Salle River. We had spent more than an hour to capture the beauty of the ruins. We had some photos taken with the old building as a backdrop. This antique building is considered as the former residence of the Trappists. For the past years, we had brought our friends, old timers and newcomers to the Fortwhyte Alive to witness the exodus of the Canadian geese to the South for Winter flight and to enjoy the wetland; to the Neepawa Lily Festivals where hundred of lily varieties are foods for the eyes and if

you want to own, you can purchase the plants; and to St. Pierre Joly's where frog jumping contest is so popular among Manitobans. We did go to the Heritage Celebrations in Steinbach and had a chance to visit the Mennonite Museum. We had a wonderful lunch at the Penner's Park. Some kids enjoyed the Water Park. And I attended the Summer Festival in Steinbach when the Southwestern Filipino Association participated in the various events. At Gimli, we had a special merienda at the Winnipeg continuation on page 27...

Filipino fans impresses Adam Levine

M

aroon 5’s front man Adam Levine greeted his band’s Pinoy fans on his official Twitter account by saying that Manila is the home of the most energetic, enthusiastic Maroon 5 fans on earth. The American pop-rock band arrived in Manila, their third visit to the country, on Sunday evening from South Korea for the Philippine leg of their “Overexposed World Tour.” Levine said the band keep on going back to the Philippines

He added that he is dedicating to his Filipino fans his newest favorite song from their fourth studio album “Overexposed” called “Daylight.” Aside from their one-night only sold-out concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Levine was also engaged by the local clothing brand Bench as one of their international endorser. This means that fans of the hunk singer can expect the

Sharon Cuneta describes KC’s new suitor as ‘a real man’

M

ega star Sharon CunetaPangilinan assured movie fans that her daughter KC Concepcion’s new suitor is a real man. Sharon is referring to a French guy named Pierre Emmanuel Plassart, who was simply described by showbiz media as a photographer and filmmaker. She related that she met Plassart and his mother in an event she and KC attended in the United States recently. She described Plassart as a very decent person

which shows how well he was raised. Another plus point for Plassart, Sharon added, is that he shows real interest and concern on KC’s halfsiblings, Frankie and Miel. The two are Sharon’s children with Senator Francis Pangilinan. The break-up of KC and her boyfriend actor Piolo Pascual a few months ago was a hot topic on local show business. The main reason that caused their separation was a secret that was never brought up and is still clouded with mystery to date.

Dolphy continues to bring people together

T

he Dolphy Aid Para sa Pinoy Foundation, Inc. is staging a big gathering of local stars with “Dolphy: Alay Tawa,” a musical tribute to the King of Comedy on September 19, 7 p.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Celebrities from rival networks ABS-CBN 2, TV5 and GMA 7 have come together for this rare occasion in honor of Dolphy’s memory and to pay homage to the Comedy King whose life has touched many Filipinos through his talent, charisma, and commitment to entertain people. Representatives from all three networks joined Dolphy’s children Eric, Vandolph, Sally, Ronnie, Dolphy Jr. and Jeffrey to discuss this ambitious undertaking during

a press conference held on Tuesday at Mother Lily’s Imperial Suites penthouse. Eric correctly pointed out that this will be the first after many years that the three biggest television networks are working together to produce a show. The musical concert will be based on Dolphy’s career and will provide the audience with the best of the local music scene and Philippine movies, many of whom have worked with Dolphy before.

Admissions, P250 for the Upper Box and P450 for the Lower Box. The show will be directed by Al Quinn, with Bibeth Orteza as script writer.

The concert will be held on September 19 with TV simulcast across all three networks on September 30 at 10 p.m. A minimum donation of P150 is equivalent to one ticket at the General

2012 Dodge Charger SXT Plus AWD Cruising in American muscle

I

f you’re looking for a muscle car this winter, look no further than the 2012 Dodge Charger SXT Plus AWD. Let’s get the numbers out of the way first. When it comes to sports cars, everyone really wants to know horsepower, right? The 2012 Dodge Charger SXT Plus AWD is equipped with a 3.6L V6 292hp and 280 lb-ft. of torque Penstar engine and capable of 0-100km/hr in roughly 5.8seconds. Secondly, fuel efficiency numbers are thrown out the window when you redline the Charger on every green light. Yes, it was totally fun to drive, especially on the open roads of rural

were one of my favorite features in the car. It was able to keep my latte hot and my can of coconut water cool at the same time. As for the Audi-inspired electronic gear shifter, I could do without. Several times during the week-long road test, I was stuck in N, thinking I was in D as I finished backing out of parking spots. Luckily,

september 20 - October 5, 2012

nobody was waiting for the parking spot as I was getting out. The SXT Plus leather interior with a mix of red and black leather throughout the cabin was an eye catcher. The bucket seats were comfortable for the long drive, including one to the Morden Corn and Apple Festival. The Dodge Charger is available in nine available models starting with

the SE ($29,995) and tops out with the SRT8 HEMI V8 model ($48,095). The Charger lineup comes with several engine options, RWD/AWD configurations and a multitude of packages options. Other vehicles in the same market space include the Chevy Camaro, Ford Taurus SHO, Chrysler 300C, Hyundai Genesis, and the Audi A4.

Manitoba. Published fuel economy rating by Dodge is 6.4L/100kms. As a comparison, the top end Charger SRT8 HEMI V8 pumps out 470hp and runs 0-100km/hr in the 4’s. That’s pure muscle sprinkled with testosterone. It also comes with paddle shifters too! More fun, for sure. Some of the neat features in the SXT Plus include thermoelectric heated and cooled front cup holders. I will admit that on first glance at the heating/cooling switch, I quickly assumed that they were the switches for heated and cooled leather seats. I was totally wrong and the cup holders

Horoscope This is a time to share the way you feel with your significant other. Even difficult topics will be handled easily and there will be little friction as clarity and understanding dominate the day. Try to keep your mind focused on the good and let go of the negative.

You will be able to make good use of your creativity at work. Don’t try to make any important decisions as you will tire yourself out trying to battle against you gut feeling. Get more facts before deciding anything. A charming day of relationships marked by mutual rapport.

You will be blessed in your attempts to accomplish personal interests. Something is causing you mental anguish because you can’t stop yourself from desiring it. Keep an open mind and examine all the possibilities. It’s important that you not confuse balancing power with fighting for control.

It’s time to stop thinking so long and hard about what you want to say! Sometimes being spontaneous is the only way you can initiate something new and exciting. You have an abundance of self-confidence and energy today. This is a good time to begin a new project.

You will depend on positive thinking to make it a great day. Today you need to get up and get active -- even if you have no idea whatsoever what you will do. The destination might not be as important as the journey, anyway. So pick a place that has a lot going on.

You can expect a very fun day today, full of silliness and laughter galore. Take time to enjoy yourself, and put aside any serious work for a while if you can. You will find it a great day for settling issues. It’s not that your workload isn’t enjoyable -- it’s just that you need to engage your fun side more than your studious side right now.

It is possible to think things into existence, especially where your actions are concerned. If you continually fill your head with thoughts of failure, it is likely this is what you achieve. Being by yourself will enable you to do whatever you want to do, whenever you want to do it.

Business before pleasure and right now you’ll need to stick to this principle. You need to be prepared to handle unexpected trends in finances. Although you want to spend your time enjoying romance, it may be necessary to handle your business first.

Happiness from career is possible. Much surprising events are expected in personal life. Whether it’s a simple pleasure or a knock-your-socks-off surprise, wonderful things are in store. Your only task is to open up your mind and welcome them all in!

It is a good day for career. It’s probably about time you lifted your head from that pile of paperwork, dressed in your finery and went out to see what you could be missing. It will be fresh and new again in a few months - the same way a favorite sports team is exciting when the new season rolls around again.

You might have to be prepared for a changed of place. You get the feeling today that others are envious of your new situation. This may be disturbing to you but realize that you deserve where you are. Socially, your life is about to get a lot busier! You are loved by all your friends, and they want to spend more time with you.

As trusting as you normally are, every now and again you get a feeling that lets you know something isn’t right. Don’t be afraid to listen to your intuition as it can keep you out of trouble. It would be better to stick to your interests and keep your secrets. Stick with newer, brighter attitudes.

Immigrating with a Criminal Record: Is Criminal Rehabilitation Automatic?

U

nder Canadian law, foreign nationals who have been convicted of certain crimes outside of Canada can be barred from entering Canada because of “criminal inadmissibility”. In many circumstances, individuals can have their criminal records erased for immigration purposes through a process known as “rehabilitation”. Depending on the seriousness of the crimes, individuals can be eligible for “deemed rehabilitation”, “individual rehabilitation”, or may not be eligible for rehabilitation at all.

What is “Deemed Rehabilitation”? For individuals convicted of certain minor crimes, “deemed rehabilitation” is available. “Deemed rehabilitation” only requires the individual to show that they were convicted of that crime and that a certain number of years since the end of the sentence has passed. What is “Individual Rehabilitation”? For “individual rehabilitation”, foreign nationals have to prove not only that a minimum period of time has passed since their sentence ended but that they are also rehabilitated.

In many cases, people treat “individual rehabilitation” as something they are entitled to simply because of a certain number of years have passed since their sentence. A court case from last December establishes that this is not the case. Why “Individual Rehabilitation” is not automatic? Last December, the federal court decided that the case of Raed Hadad. Mr. Hadad had a significant criminal record which included convictions for arson and the unauthorized use of food stamps. All of these convictions occurred when Mr. Hadad lived in the U.S. and, after serving seven years in prison, he was deported from the U.S. to his home country. A number of years later, Mr. Hadad returned to the U.S., was subsequently arrested at a traffic stop, was jailed again by U.S. immigration for one year and then deported back to his home country.

september 20 - October 5, 2012

A number of years later, Mr. Hadad came to Canada, Mr. Hadad met a Canadian citizen, married her and had two children with her. During the court case, their third child was expected to be born. While in Canada, Mr. Hadad purchased a home with his wife, obtained a work permit that legally allowed him to work in Canada, began his own general contracting business (which employed three full-time staff at the time), was a member of his local church, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Hadad applied for rehabilitation but his application was denied. The denial of his application shows that the simple passage of time will not result in individual rehabilitation result being automatically granted. This being said, Mr. Hadad was able to win his case because the judge found that the decision that the immigration officer made was not reasonable.

How do I know if I am eligible for rehabilitation? The first thing that needs to be determined is whether the crime that was committed is equivalent to a Canadian crime and what particular crime it is equivalent to. This usually takes a detailed legal analysis of both the foreign and Canadian statute. It is only after this analysis is done can it be determined what type of rehabilitation, if any, is available. RD Alba returns home

U

S-trained indie director RD Alba is currently in the Philippines to shoot and screen his first full-length feature. “Biktima,” which opens in local cinemas today, stars Cesar Montano and Angel Aquino as the married couple separated by tragedy and later reunited under trying circumstances. Alba feels it’s important for wider audiences to watch indie films. He added that a theatrical run for indies will give indie filmmakers a chance to show their talents as well as a way to express gratitude to the cast and crew of the film. Alba was born in Bohol, but grew up in Philadelphia. He earned his film degree at the Los Angeles Film School. He said his goal in making “Biktima,” is to create a certain formula that would link American filmmaking and Filipino cinema. In 2002, he returned to the country to direct the Cebuano series “Kapalaran” (starring Chanda Romero, Pilar Pilapil Joel Torre). In 2004, Alba worked as associate producer in the 2004 film “Panaghoy sa Suba,” which Montano directed He later directed “Milyonaryong Mini” (with Cherry Lou, Giselle Sanchez, Juliana Palermo) which aired in 2006. Some of his cinematic influences include Alfred Hitchcock, Wes Craven, Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg. His favorites among Filipino filmmakers are Brillante Mendoza, Marilou DiazAbaya and Montano.

Northern Lights bring Manitoba skies to life!

T

his happened! As I was the Trans-Canada Highway driving home from Calgary between Brandon and Winnipeg, earlier this month along a magnificent spectacle of

lights danced across the skies to the north of me. I immediately turned to my GPS unit to figure out the next country road to turn off so I could get away from the bright lights of trucks and trailers cruising along Hwy 1. As I came upon my first random country road and farmers field, I parked my car and opened the door. To my amazement, I was greeted by Mother Nature with a once-in-alifetime amazing display of lights

dancing along the southern skies of Manitoba. I've seen the Northern Lights before but not with this much intensity and vibrancy. I've been to Churchill, Manitoba on several occasions in the hopes of witnessing the magical light show. I've seen them while camping and cottaging over the years. Again, the brilliance of the aurora borealis on this evening, alone in a wheat field brought

shivers down my spine. Given how far south I was, to see the Northern Lights directly above was truly special. Most instances in the past, the Northern Lights were visible across the northern horizon. I have several other photos posted on the Filipino Journal website. The photos are from at least five different farmer’s fields and random country roads somewhere between Brandon and Winnipeg. A drive which normally would take about 2 hours ended up being a 4-hour park & shoot adventure. If it wasn't for the chilly conditions that evening, I may have stayed all night until the light show ended. As I approached Winnipeg, the light pollution from the city lights washed away the Northern Lights. These Northern Lights kicked some major aurora borealis! They were truly the best display I have ever experienced. I’m truly in awe of Mother Nature. I’m truly blessed that I had the proper camera gear to be able to enjoy it with everyone. For those lucky enough to experience seeing the Northern Lights, I can understand how mystical they can be. Watching them on TV, or YouTube just isn't the same. For those still waiting to see them in true living colour, make sure to enjoy the moment first. After that, run to your camera and tripod as quickly as possible. We truly live in a magical and beautiful country.
