What happens if there is not enough space to answer questions in an immigration application?
A
ll immigration forms have a limited amount of space for a person’s answers. If an answer requires more space, what do you do? Just because an immigration form has a limited amount of space does not mean that you should shorten your answer to fit the space. In any application, it is important that additional pages be added to include all relevant information and that these pages are clearly references. Failure to do so could result in an application being refused. What happens if I do not put in a full answer? Earlier this year, an immigration applicant took a case to court after his application was refused. In the case of Shah v. Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Mr. Shah applied to immigrate to Canada. Because his job duties took up more space than what was in the immigration form, Mr. Shah stated that added an additional page listing all of his duties. On the immigration form, only two duties were listed. On the additional page, Mr. Shah stated he listed his 17 other duties. The application of Mr. Shah was refused because the immigration officer did not believe that Mr. Shah did the duties required of the position. In refusing the application, the officer claimed that this additional page Mr. Shah said he included was not actually there. In his decision, the judge found that he had no reason to disbelieve either Mr. Shah or the officer. However, because it was impossible for the court to determine whether the addition page was included or not, the court accepted that the page was
not in front of the officer. Because of this, the judge said that the officer did not make an error and Mr. Shah lost his case. If I need to add an additional page, how do I do it? In Mr. Shah’s case, the judge noted that Mr. Shah did not put anything on the immigration form that would have alerted the officer that there may have been an additional page. As a result, if you need to add additional pages to an immigration application, it is important to reference on the actual immigration form that additional pages have been added. If more than one page has been added, the number of additional pages should be indicated. In addition, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has instructions as to how to attach additional pages to an application. It is important that these instructions be followed so that errors such as this do not result in refused applications. Roldan Sevillano launches campaign for Tyndall Park
L
iberal star power came to the northwest Winnipeg riding of Tyndall Park this morning when Quebec MP Justin Trudeau, son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau - father of Canadian multiculturalism lent a helping hand to Manitoba Liberal candidate, Roldan C. Sevillano to officially launch his campaign.
Trudeau offered his full-throated endorsement of the young candidate stating, “Roldan is a part of the new generation of young leaders who are beginning to take part in moving Manitoba and all of Canada forward.” Sevillano spoke about public service and his vision for the campaign, “This is going to be a campaign of hope,
a campaign of the future, a campaign for a better Manitoba.” Sevillano was campaign manager for Winnipeg North Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux’s two federal election wins. Prior to entering the political arena, he worked for six years at Calvary Place – a seniors’ residence – as recreational therapist.

Manny won’t allow Jinkee to enter showbiz
S
aranggani Representative Manny Pacquiao is consistent with his stand not to allow his wife Jinkee to enter the entertainment industry. In a TV interview, the boxing champ explained that there are more important things to be attended to such as their numerous business investments. The news about Jinkee joining show business started in 2009 after she endorsed the Belo Medical Group along with celebrities Lucy TorresGomez, Dingdong Dantes, Ruffa Gutierrez and Piolo Pascual.

Shane Tan bagged the overall champion award in science. On the other hand, Choi Jong Yoon of South Korea won as Exploration champion in math, while Ferris Prima Nugraha of Indonesia was Theory champion in science. Overall, Thailand won 6 gold, 13 silver, and 4 bronze medals, while the Philippines got 6 gold, 12 silver and 38 bronze medals, said Dr. Simon Chua, chief organizer and president of the Mathematics Trainers GuildPhilippines (MTG). The rest of the rankings were Singapore, Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, South Africa, South Korea, Malaysia, and India.
The Filipino boxing icon clarified however that though he is okay with Jinkee doing endorsements, it’s an entirely different thing when it comes to her entering showbiz. The pound-for-pound king left for the US on Sept. 4 to continue the world press tour for the match. The two fighters will be off to Mexico next for a media event. The third face-off between Pacquiao and the Mexican boxer happens on Nov. 12 (US time) at the MGM Grand Las Vegas, Nevada.

2011 UM-Sigaw Bursary Recipients
H
appy new school year! 2010-2011 has come and gone and as 20112012 rings in we would like to celebrate with the announcement of the 2011 UMSigaw “Tinig ng Pilipinas” Bursary and the 2011 UPAA-UMSigaw Bursary: Katrina Mae Soriano and Coleen Isabel Valdez. Katrina Soriano hailed from Shaftesbury High School, graduating with an honour in distinction in chemistry and precalculus and received an MTS Scholarship as well as a U of M Entrance Scholarship. Having been involved with the Envirothon and Shaftesbury High Altitude Robotics Project, she will be entering the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba with
a focus on Electrical Engineering. Currently, Katrina aspires to continue on to pursue a master’s degree upon graduation. Having been involved in these academic competitions and already in a extra-curricular program at the U of M, the bursary committee deemed Katrina most qualified for the UMSigaw “Tinig ng Pilipinas” Bursary. Coleen Valdez graduated from Sisler High School as an honours-level student with glowing recommendations. Before coming to Canada, of which she has only been here for a year and a half, she was involved in many humanitarian activities such as the Pontifical Mission Societies and aiding in the Typhoon Ondoy relief. After University 1 at the
University of Manitoba, Coleen intends to obtain a degree in Economics or Global Political Economy in order to enter the Faculty of Law. Being previously erolled at the University of the Philippines, we found Coleen most fitted for the new joint UPAAUMSigaw Bursary with the UP Alumni Association of Manitoba. We wish Katrina and Coleen all the best in their scholastic endeavours, and hope that their promising beginning would help them to be the role models the Filipino community in Winnipeg will be looking forward to hear about in the future.

ontrary to what many people say, I regard the Internet age as also the golden age of music because in this age a music enthusiast has the power to learn about and listen to whatever band, artist, or genre s/he prefers. All s/he needs are initiative, resourcefulness, and the interest to discover the old and the new and to rediscover what used to be only vaguely familiar to him. In the past, music lovers usually relied only on commercial radio and expensive music magazines just to know what was new. Today, one can anticipate if there are forthcoming

Kylie Padilla is a special friend, says Aljur Abrenica
A
ctor Aljur Abrenica was recently put on the spot in the Celebrity Secrets Interpreted segment of Showbiz Central during which mind reader Nomer Lasala supposedly decipher some personal secret details from inside his brain. When asked by onscreen partner Kris Bernal the name of the girl the actor last kissed with feelings, Lasala wrote “Kylie [Padilla]” on his sketchpad with the word “cheeks” underneath, which Abrenica confirmed. Abrenica’s former co-star Rhian Ramos then asked the identity of the special person the
actor last brought in his resort in Batangas. Abrenica was visibly surprised when Lasala showed his sketchpad on which the words “Kakai with friends” was written. The actor also wondered how Lasala found out about his pet name “Kakai” for Kylie. Speculations about the Kylie-Aljur alleged romantic relationship arose when Abrenica attended her birthday party last January. The actor has described Padilla in past interviews as his special friend and one of his inspirations.

What to Look For When Buying a Home
Y
our home isn’t just a place to live, it is also probably the biggest and most important investment you will ever make. To help you protect that investment and find a safe, comfortable place for your family to call home, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) offers the following list of some of the things you should look at before you buy a home, to make sure you don’t end up having to pay for a lot of expensive repairs: • Brickwork and chimney pointing—look at the brickwork on the outside of the chimney. If it is chipping, crumbling, turning to powder or if the mortar is starting to fall apart, it could be very expensive to have it repaired. • Decks and porches—look for signs of rotting wood, even under a fresh coat of paint. Soft spots or places where the wood is splintered could be a sign of more widespread damage. • Electrical system—if you are buying an older home, find out if the electrical panel has been upgraded. If the service says 200 amps, it is an upgrade. A 60 or 100 amp panel has probably not been
upgraded, and may not be enough to meet the electricity needs of your family. • Floors—what shape are the floors in? If the floors are hardwood, do they need to be sanded and refinished? Refinishing isn’t very expensive, but it is easier if done before you move in, while the rooms are still empty. • Heating—find out how old the furnace is, and what kind of fuel is used to heat the home. Natural gas is generally the least expensive option, but it is not available everywhere. Oil and electric heat are common sources of fuel in Canada, but are more expensive, especially for a house with baseboard heaters. • Insulation—insulation keeps your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. If the house has older plaster walls, it probably has little or no insulation. Hiring an insulation contractor to blow extra insulation behind the walls can be expensive, but it will save you money on your heating bills in the long run. • Parking—find out where you can park and how many parking spaces come with the house. Many older houses in large cities, such as Montréal and Toronto, do not

have a garage or driveway. If the house does not have a driveway, can you get a parking permit from the city to park on the street? If not, do municipal regulations allow you to build a driveway or parking spot? For more information or to obtain • Plumbing—the plumbing hard copies for FREE on other system should be copper pipes with copper soldering, or PVC piping. Lead pipes mean that the plumbing is old and will need to be upgraded in the future. • Roof—is the roof in good condition? A roof is usually good for 20 to 25 years. Some signs that you may need to replace or repair the roof include leaks or water stains near the chimney and on the ceiling of the top floor inside the home. • Sewage and drains—hire a qualified inspector to find out if the sewer system and drains are working properly. You should also find out if the sewage service from the street has been upgraded recently. • Windows—If you are looking at an older home that has just single panes of glass in the windows, you may need to upgrade to a new The family of Lola Ebeng sincerely thank relatives and friends who expressed set of windows before you move their condolences for the passing of their in.

Explore Manitoba “Morden just a corn” By: Lucille Nolasco
F
or more than 40 years, visitors from all over flock to Morden, Manitoba for their famous “Corn and Apple Festival.” Held yearly in the last week of August, the festival features a three-day (Friday to Sunday) extravaganza of live stage performances, parades, arts and crafts, carnivals, food and of course, the stars of the festival, the Morden corn and apple cider. This year I went to the festival for the very first time. Together with my father and nephew, I joined the bus
trip organized by the Filipino Journal and Travel Manitoba on August 27th. The fun started even before we reached Morden, as the Group A volunteers prepared food, games and prizes to everyone’s delight! The two-hour journey went by fast and in no time at all, we reached our destination. The parade was just about to start when we arrived. A lot of people have already lined up along the parade route armed with their own lawn chairs. You can see and feel
the excitement of everyone young and old. I also saw some friends from Winnipeg who I haven’t seen in a while. I guess it took the lure of sweet, fresh corn for us to meet again, eh? Before settling on an area for the parade, Tito Rod Cantiveros showed us where they will be serving the free corn and apple juice later. Then on to the parade! Colourful floats of various shapes and sizes were met with good cheers, some were from other towns like Altona, Neepawa and others. Local officials as well as provincial politicians were also seen waving to the crowd. After a short break, it was time for the highlight of our trip

- the free corn! Hundreds of people from different backgrounds lined up with anticipation. As I took a bite of my corn, a burst of freshness and sweetness unlike another burst inside my mouth! No kidding! No wonder the corn from Morden is famous. I loved corn even before, now I love it even more. The friendly volunteers also served up apple drinks to the hundreds of people who came that Saturday. And once you finished your first free corn, you can line up again for another, and another, until you get your fill. People of Morden know that their corn can get addicting, so they have prepared sacks of the sweet and tasty treats for purchase. For $20.00
you can have 4 dozens of fresh, sweet corn to share with friends and family back home in Winnipeg. While a big bottle of apple cider costs $10.00 After a brief visit to the shops and stalls, it was time to go back to the city, bringing back the fun and sweet memories of Morden. I wouldn’t mind going back next year. ‘Wanna come? Health benefits of corn: 1. Corn is helpful in kidney problems including renal dysfunction. 2. Corn bran is a heart protector, when eaten everyday it can lower cholesterol in the body. 3. Corn is also beneficial in aiding with anemia, constipation and gout.

Kris, James refuse to talk about settlement agreement
E
stranged couple Kris Aquino and James Yap both refused to reveal the details of the settlement agreement resulting from the on-going procedures for the nullification of their marriage. Aquino said she may earn a reprimand from the judge if she talks about how their wealth would be divided between them. The TV host-actress also said what matters is that they had an amicable separation. Although their marriage did not have a happy ending, Aquino added that she is still thankful because she has Bimby, her only son with the basketball player.
For his part, Yap’s lawyers also did not divulge the contents of the agreement as they denied that the cager received P48 million from the settlement. Lawyer Sonya BenemeritoCastillo of the Kapunan, Garcia and Castillo Law Offices said the gag order issued by the Court prevents them s from speaking about all matters pertaining to the case. The lawyer also clarified that the issue on property settlement has long been settled, when the parties amicably and voluntarily entered into an Agreement early this year.

Tasmania - “A World Apart, Not a World Away”
W
here would you experience breathing the purest air in the world? Or living for a day in the unspoiled environment of a vast parkland? Nowhere else but in Tasmania, known as the “island of inspiration”. Tasmania, named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, is an Australian island state, a fascinating place of history and natural beauty to explore. With the “Diamond Princess” sailing into the deep-water harbour of the colourful waterfront of Australia’s southernmost city, Hobart, we began to experience Tasmania’s history from the Constitution Dock to the wild side of the island on a narrated tour of the places of interest. Driving to Rosny Point Lookout allowed us to enjoy the panoramic view of Hobart, the Derwent River and Mt. Wellington towering in the background. We travelled to Richmond, a beautifully preserved Georgian village of historic charms and had free time exploring a few of the historic buildings that are now shops, arts and crafts galleries, tearooms, and inns. A must-see in Richmond is the Richmond Gaol historic site, a jail built by convicts and the oldest intact
gaol in Australia. Also featuring historic relics and documents, the gaol buildings include chain gang rooms, a flogging yard, cook house, and holding rooms. Richmond is home to the Australia’s oldest known stone arch bridge also built by convict labour reminding us of the “forced migration that contributed to the development of Australia”. Richmond Bridge is a lasting symbol of Tasmania’s convict heritage. The oldest Roman Catholic church in Australia built in 1837, St. John the Evangelist Church, is also in Richmond. The small church with three spires stands on a hill. At the Bonorong Wildlife Coservation Centre, animal sanctuaries dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing injured and orphaned natives, we oberved some of Australia’s most famous natives, such as kangaroos, Tasmanian Devils and wombats along with the koalas and wallabies. The animals roam free in their natural habitats and we had a chance to interact with many of them especially the kangaroos and the koalas. It was an excellent opportunity to click our cameras to capture these unforgettable moments.
Tasmania is the only place on earth where you’ll find the Tasmanian Devils. Also the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world, a Tasmanian Devil, the size of a small dog, has a stocky and mascular build with black fur. The short-legged wombats are also Australian marsupials approximately a meter long with short stubby tails. (Marsupial is a mammal that has its babies in a pouch.) Besides its colonial buildings, monuments and cottages, Hobart is also famous for its Saturday’s Farmers’ Market (a popular street fair) at the Salamanca Place, which is originally a warehouse area and now a lively hotspot of restaurants, galleries and boutiques as well as an arts community. Hobart also claims one of the newest additions to this continent down under its first legal casino, the Wrest Point Hotel Casino, opened in 1973. Lastly, we had a guided walking tour of historic Port Arthur, Australia’s infamous penal colony, a popular tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

received a WikiLeaks recording of the private meeting between Philippine President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III and Chinese President Hu Jintao prior to their official bilateral meeting in Beijing during P-Noy’s state visit to China. The conversation went as follows: Hu: Good afternoon, President Aquino. Welcome to China! P-Noy: Gung hay fat choy, President Hu. Hu: Huh? I didn’t know it’s New Year in the Philippines? P-Noy: Well… we celebrate New Year everyday! Hehehe…. Hu: No wonder, you’re always smiling, President Aquino. P-Noy: Just call me P-Noy. Can I just call you Hu? Hu: Okay, Pee Noi. Hu is okay since it can’t be shorter than that. Gotcha! Hahaha… P-Noy: We can make it a bit longer… like Huhu? We do that all the time. Like my vice president Jejomar Binay, we call him Jojo. And there’s Ferdinand Marcos Jr. His nickname is Bongbong. Hu: That’s interesting. It almost sounds like bang bang, which reminds me when we executed three Filipino “drug mules” for drug trafficking. Bang bang! By the way, have you buried the remains of Marcos yet? P-Noy: We’re getting there. The biggest issue is where to bury him. The Marcoses have been waiting for my decision since February. Hu: Gee, Pee Noi, he’s been dead for more than 20 years and you haven’t decided where to bury him? No wonder your country is left behind in the 20th century. P-Noy: Well, it’s not as simple as that, Hu. Hu: I guess so. I heard that you’re having a hard time making decisions, my friend. P-Noy: My philosophy is: If you don’t make decisions, you don’t make
P-Noy meets Hu? mistakes. Hu: But the biggest mistake a leader makes whether it is good or bad, right or wrong is not making a decision at all. P-Noy: Well, I’d rather let the chips fall where they may. Hu: Isn’t that what Filipinos call, “Bahala na”? By the way, how’s your love life? P-Noy: Well, it was like Coca-Cola. It was “regular” before the election. When I took over, it became “light.” Then it became “zero.” And now with all the problems we’re having, it’s no longer like a Coca-Cola, it’s “sub-zero” like a frozen Margarita. I feel like I’m sitting on top of an iceberg. Hu: Whoa! That could freeze your cojones! Hahaha… P-Noy: Yes, to say the least. Tell me, Hu, with more than one billion Chinese, how do you resolve your problems? Hu: Have you heard of Mao’s dictum: “Power comes from the barrel of a gun”? You’re a shooter; you should know that, my friend. P-Noy: Well, I only shoot paper targets, Hu. Hu: So I see. You should start shooting “drug mules” like we do here. That will definitely stop drug trafficking in you country. Take it as a friendly advice, my dear friend. P-Noy: Thank you, Hu. As a token of my appreciation I’d like to present you with a personal gift. Here it is. Hu: What is this? P-Noy: It’s called the “barrel man.” It’s a wooden statuette of a man partially hidden inside a round wooden barrel. If you lift the barrel, it triggers a mechanism. Hu: Is this some kind of a gun? Does it shoot? P-Noy: Try it. Go ahead and lift the barrel. Hu: Okay… here it is… I’m lifting it now… (takes a deep breath). P-Noy: Bang bang!

happened then. It led to World War II. It’s a good thing good old Dougie Mac returned to liberate us from the Japanese. Hu: Okay, okay, Pee Noi. Let’s agree to disagree, okay? P-Noy: Okay. Are we still going to sign a $60-billion five-year development program? Hu: Of course, my dear friend.
Consider it as a gift from the Chinese people. P-Noy: A gift? Hmm… Uncle Sam told me, “Beware of Chinese bearing Peking duck marinated in Spratly oil.” Hu: That’s a good one, Pee Noi. Touché! Hahaha… P-Noy: Gotcha! Bang bang! Hehehe….
Hu: Whoa! What is this? Oh! It’s a pen… Whew! Hahaha…. This is really funny, Pee Noi! I like your sense or humor. Hahaha…. P-Noy: I’m glad you like it, Hu. Hu: I have a present for you, too. Here it is. P-Noy: What is this? It looks like a dead bird! Hu: It’s a delicacy. It’s Peking duck. But this one is specially cooked for you. It’s marinated in Spratly oil. P-Noy: Spratly oil??? Hmm… Please explain, Hu. Hu: The oil was extracted from the Reed Bank in the Spratly archipelago. P-Noy: Reed Bank? That’s ours! We call it Recto Bank! The Spratlys are ours! Hu: No! It’s ours! We call the Spratlys “Nansha” and the entire South China Sea is ours! P-Noy: We call it the West Philippine Sea! And we’ll defend it to the last man. There’s a group of FilipinoAmericans who say, “The Spratlys are worth dying for!” Hu: Well, my friend, there are a billion Chinese who’ll defend the South China Sea and the Spratlys to the last man! And we have an aircraft carrier to defend them. P-Noy: But we have a mutual defense treaty with Uncle Sam who’d come to our aid if you attacked us! Uncle Sam has 11 aircraft carriers. Hu: Hey, that’s not fair! This is a “family feud” among us, Asians. Asia for all Asians! We all prosper together! We’re family. So don’t bring your Uncle Sam into this dispute? P-Noy: Hohoho… Nice try, Hu. The Japanese tried that “coprosperity” b.s. in 1940. Look what

Horoscope You continue in a cautious and self-protective mode for the first part of September. You have a hard time keeping your balance on September.
September is likely to be an especially busy month for you, Cancer, and while you can feel pulled in a number of directions, you manage to stay on top of things.
Work done in relative solitude is your best bet this month, dear Libra, although the last week of September brings more outgoing energy and a stronger desire to mingle. Friendships become especially lively.
You are expressing the more adventurous, fun-loving side of your personality in September, dear Capricorn, although in the last week of the month, you are ready to prove your worth. Professional and public matters demand your attention.
It’s a highly creative, romantic, and fun September! Others are finding you especially appealing, and you are making time for recreation. Creative Bulls will find plenty of inspiration. Recently, there has been much focus on the past in your love life, but September brings forward-looking energy to your relationships.
Emotions settle and September begins with a sense of calm. If you have been waiting for a loan, financial aid, mortgage, or other settlement, this is the month when you’re likely to get the good news. Money is a big focus this month, and you are in a good position to improve your lot in life.
Your social life animates this month, dear Scorpio, and your ability to persuade others is stronger than ever. On the 12th of the month can raise the temperature in a romance. Your career once again heats up.
Good energy for work is with you all month, dear Aquarius. Your hard work pays off, but be sure to pace yourself so that you don’t tire yourself out. You’re in a better position to attract money to you, and good news about your finances.
More clarity and a stronger sense of purpose are with you this month. Money matters tend to be strong, although there can be a need to get serious about your finances towards the end of September.
This is one of the more public and accountable periods of the year for you, dear Sagittarius. Fortunately, you are coming across in an especially charming light. New directions in your career are in store for you.
Relationships are revived in September. While a significant other can seem to have the upper hand this month, you’re not inclined to keep score. Instead, you are enjoying the improvements.
September is likely to be a more straightforward month for you, dear Gemini. Financial matters clear up, and work matters move forward. An important culmination of a professional matter can occur around the 12th, when recognition may be forthcoming.

any parents enjoy teaching their Canadian-born or raised children Filipino words for common human body parts. Like, you could usually observe a mother asking her child what the Filipino word for nose or ears is. When the child answers “ilong” or “tenga,” you would surely see the pride on the mother’s face. Parents who teach their children trivial information like these are admirable; whether consciously or not, they are instilling in their children a sense of their cultural roots. However, what I don’t find
praiseworthy are parents who delightfully teach their children the “bad” words, which include the Filipino terms for sexual body parts, treating this subject a matter of joke. When taught without malice or approached in a scientific perspective, sexual body parts should not be taken as disgusting or embarrassing. Most often, the problem lies on how parents impart to their children such delicate information.

those supporters in line to help her maintain her grip on power; and (5) Many cabinet secretaries -- who were placed in high positions by Mike – directly reported to him, bypassing the agency chain of command. Conjugal presidency If Mike was indeed directly involved in the affairs of state, what we had then was a de facto “conjugal presidency,” similar to the “conjugal dictatorship” of the Marcoses. With the Arroyos having total control of the military and the police, the House of Representatives, the Office of the Ombudsman, and to a great extent the Supreme Court, the Arroyos’ reign was a virtual dictatorship. The only body that the Arroyos failed to control was the Senate. However, the Senate was rendered inutile because of infighting among its members and the presence of a small but cohesive minority that protected the Arroyos any which way they can. At that time, Gloria had presidential immunity. But for those charges filed against Mike before the Office of the Ombudsman, Merci simply dismissed them. Indeed, Mike must have considered himself, “lucky.” But as soon Gloria stepped down, a string of six plunder cases were filed against her… and more coming. But with Merci no longer around to protect the former First Couple, it seems that Mike’s “luck” might be running out soon. Premature filing? The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee investigation on the “Chopper Scam” has documented a lot of incriminating evidence and testimonies against Mike and 16 others. However, the investigation is not yet complete, which led Sen. Franklin Drilon to wonder why the PNP did not wait for the Senate to

September 5 - 20, 2011 conclude its investigation before filing the plunder case. Could it be that the “premature” filing was done to pre-empt the Senate investigation? If so, it could weaken the case just like what happened quite a few times before. And, with “luck,” Mike Arroyo might just beat the system once again. This possible scenario puts Gen. Samuel Pagdilao Jr., commander of PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), which filed the plunder case, in the hot seat. Is he in cahoots with the accused? Was there a deliberate plan to derail the case once it reached the court; thus, absolving Mike and his co-accused? But Pagdilao was quick to defend himself claiming that the “Chopper Scam” was being investigated long before the Senate started its own. He said that there was enough evidence to file the plunder case, saying: “We would not have filed the case if we did not believe it.” I just hope that Pagdilao has what the accused didn’t have -- honor and integrity. In the play, “The Barber of Seville,” Count Almaviva contacted his ex-servant and barber Figaro to help him gain access to Doctor Bartholo’s home to see Rosine whom he fell in love with when he met her the first time. At first, Figaro resisted; but he agreed after the Count promised him money. Figaro then devised a scheme for the Count to see Rosine, who was kept and locked by Doctor Bartholo, her guardian, who intended to marry her himself. With luck, Figaro succeeded. The play ended with the Count and Rosine getting married. Will our modern-day “Figaro” – Mike Arroyo – be able to devise a scheme to extricate himself and his co-accused from the long arm of the law? Or, is Figaro’s “luck” finally running out?

The Weigh In by Big Marv @BigMarvShow
Chilling with Eric Perez
S
aturday, September 10th, Canadian Fighting Championship returns to the Winnipeg Convention Centre with CFC7. This is a card loaded with exciting local fighters and intriguing match ups. The most exciting fighter on the card has to be Eric Perez. He makes his way back into the cage to take on Tony Bibby. I got a chance to go down to WAMMA (Winnipeg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts), catch his work out and speak with him.
What do you see as your opponent, Tony Bibby’s biggest weakness? I haven’t seen too much footage on Tony so I’m not too sure. I just prepare for the worst by working a lot with the best guys at our club. I’ve heard a few things about him but he’s never fought anyone like me and I haven’t been this ready for a fight since CFC3, so I’m anxious to get back in there and remind everyone who I am.
As one of this city’ most exciting fighters, do you feel any pressure to go for broke every time? The city’s? I am Canada’s most exciting bantamweight! Ha! I don’t fight a certain way because I have to, I fight the way I do because it’s the only way I know how. I’m constantly looking for a way out of bad spots, and I am Is there anything you decided always looking for a way around, to work on more? Striking, jiu over, or through my opponent. jitsu? No, my camps are always the How do you see this fight same, I’ll work on specific things ending? I hope this fight goes a few for different opponents depending on how we game plan. But equal round. It’s been a while since my time is spent on my stand up and last fight and I really enjoy the ring time. I always want to have ground games. the fight on the feet as long as I When did you start camp for this fight? I started my camp quite a while ago, this one will end up being just short of 11 weeks. This one is a little longer because I was really heavy and had a long way to go to get back in shape.
can keep it there. If I can keeps this fight standing for a majority of the first two rounds he’s going out, no question. I will have my way with him on the feet. I’ve been working on a couple of new submissions as well, so hopefully I get to use one of them and get the tap that way, either one of those I’m sure will have everyone asking ‘what was that?!’ I’ve been away a while and there are people out in the MMA community who’ve forgot who I am, I’m going to use this fight as a reminder. I am more focused for this fight than I have ever been before. I’ve set a new goal for myself and that is to fight in the UFC’s 125 pound flyweight division they announced they’re starting next year. I just turned 33 and I realize that I am quickly running out of time to accomplish that goal, so anything I can do to get there I will do and if that means sacrificing my social life to get there, so be it. I’ve given myself 3 years to accomplish this goal and it’s going to start here at CFC 7 and unfortunately for Tony Bibby, he’s going to run into the new Eric Perez. That is so awesome. We’re all definitely pulling for you and want to see you in the UFC. Can’t wait until your first post-fight interview with Joe Rogan! Let’s move on to the diet and training leading up to your fight. Name that one food you’ve been craving once training and the fight is done. I can’t, there are way too many. I’m definitely hitting up something greasy after the fight, even before we make it to our after party.
What is the worst part of training, what’s the best part of training? For this fight, it was definitely missing out on the amazing summer we’ve been having. I spent just about every evening in July and August at WAMMA (Winnipeg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts), there are a lot of places I would have rather spent for a few of those nights that’s for sure. The best part is getting back in the gym, once I’m back in shape I even surprise myself with what I’m capable of doing in the gym. Spending time with the guys at WAMMA is awesome, they’re my brothers and I trust them to make sure they get me ready for every fight. I know once they give me the ok next week that there aren’t a lot of guys in this country that can handle me. What other fight on this card other than yours are you most looking forward to? Of course I’m really excited to see my teammates fight. Lindsey Hawkes vs Chris Stranger is gonna be a great fight! Chris is a nice guy and a good grappler but there is no way I see him winning this fight, even if he does manage to get Lindsey to the ground he’s in a lot of trouble. Lindsey is a brown belt and the things I see him do in gym, wow! Lindsey is the striking coach at WAMMA and if Lindsey has his way, Chris is gonna be counting the lights at the Convention Centre. Also, Dwight Sutherland is fighting Serge Rochon, I used to train with Serge when I trained with CKMTC a few years ago and he is a hell of a guy and a good fighter.
September 5 - 20, 2011
Dwight has come a long way in a really short time since he joined WAMMA and he was already very talented naturally and pretty experienced. The main event looks awesome on paper as well. Dave Zuniga vs Cyrus Washington, I’ve seen some of Washington’s fights online and he looks like one hell of a muay thai fighter. Dave is Dave and getting to see him fight live again is gonna be treat, he’s spent a lot of time in Thailand recently and I am excited to see what he’s bringing back. Where can we get tickets to CFC 7? Ticket Master has tickets but I believe almost all of the tables are sold out. Contact CFC gym if you’re looking for some tickets. How about a shout out to your sponsors? A shout out to Dean at Full Time Fighter in Garden City Mall. Full Time Fighter have been great supporters and Dean is a huge help with all of my sponsors. He’s one of the biggest MMA fans and a very good friend of mine. Watch for a new location in St.Vital Mall for the Christmas Holidays, you’ll also see some of WAMMA’s top fighters actually working there! I’ve mentioned this before and I’ll say it again. A fight card that includes Eric Perez is a sure way to get your money’s worth. He’s an exciting competitor with break-neck speed. In fact, my poor photographer had a difficult time catching the right shot as Eric’s punches and kicks came at a furious pace. CFC7 is a stacked card and will be on fantastic show. Enjoy the fights!
