About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch

The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing

and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

As the sun rises on a new academic year, the hallways echo with the laughter and excitement of school children returning to their second home - the classroom. After a well-deserved break, students are eagerly lacing up their shoes, slinging backpacks over their shoulders, and embarking on a journey of learning, growth, and camaraderie. The anticipation in the air is palpable as parents, teachers, and students alike look forward to the resumption of routine, structure, and the pursuit of knowledge. The classroom, once again, becomes a bustling hub of curiosity, discovery, and friendship. For many children, the return to school represents more than just a continuation of academics. It’s a reunion with friends, a chance to share summer stories, and an opportunity to forge new bonds. The sheer joy of seeing familiar faces and making new friends creates a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere within the school walls. Teachers, the unsung heroes of education, are ready with open arms and lesson plans that will inspire, challenge, and nurture the young minds entrusted to their care. The excitement of imparting knowledge and witnessing the spark of understanding in a student’s eyes is what fuels their passion for teaching. As the first bell rings, signaling the beginning of a new chapter, students settle into their desks, each one a blank canvas waiting to be filled with knowledge, creativity, and skills. The sound of pencils scratching against paper, the hum of discussions, and the occasional burst of laughter create a harmonious symphony that signifies the return to the rhythm of academic life. The return to school is not just about academics; it’s a holistic experience that includes sports, arts, and extracurricular activities. The playing fields resound with the cheers of sports, arts, and extracurricular activities. The playing fields resound with the cheers of sports enthusiasts, while the art rooms come alive with the vibrant colours of creativity. From science labs to music studios, each corner of the school is a canvas for students to explore and express themselves. While the journey ahead may have its challenges, the resilience and enthusiasm of school children are a testament to their eagerness to learn and grow. The coming months will witness not just academic achievements but also personal milestones, character development, and a sense of belonging that extends beyond the classroom walls. So as we witness the return of school children to their educational haven, let’s celebrate the magic of learning, the joy of friendships, and the boundless possibilities that a new school year brings. May this academic journey be filled with discovery, laughter, and the promise of a brighter future for these eager minds stepping back into the hallowed halls of education.

Geelong Column By Mayor Trent Sullivan

Whether it’s food, drink, music or sport, January is festival season in Geelong. But in February, it is all about the Festa. Pako Festa - the celebration - transforms Geelong West on Saturday 24 February into the biggest and best open-air street party. Council is proud to be a major supporter of Pako Festa, providing $100,000 via our budget to help deliver this stunning celebration of cultural diversity. Pako Festa is a highly significant event, because it showcases our rich, multicultural community and welcomes people from all walks of life to come together. It encourages us learn from each other; better understand traditional cultures; and open our eyes, ears, and tastebuds to some amazing food and entertainment from across the globe. I’ll be pounding the pavement up and down Pako, to indulge in a wide variety of food, and look forward to seeing you there. For more information visit www.pakofesta.com.au

Stage 3 Tax Cuts and how to affect you - but not what we were promised

By Warren Strybosch

Higher income earners have been passed over again and the government is stating that the backflip on the promised tax cuts is not politically motivated. This means that those earning $200,000 or more will receive a $4,529 cut, instead of the legislated $9,075 they were due to receive from 1 July. Only those earning less than $150,000 will benefit from the impending tax cuts as follows: • Reduce the 19% tax rate to 16% (for incomes between $18,200 and $45,000). • Reduce the 32.5% tax rate to 30% (for incomes between $45,000 and the new $135,000 threshold). • Increase the threshold at which the 37% tax rate applies from $120,000 to $135,000. • Increase the threshold at which the 45% tax rate applies from $180,000 to $190,000. Therefore, following these announcements and assuming amending legislation is passed, the Australian resident personal income tax rates from 1 July 2024 will be:

From 1 July 2024

Resident individual Up to $18,200

Nil

$18,201 to $45,000

16% on part over $18,200

$45,001 to $135,000

$4,288 + 30% on part over $45.000

$135,001 to $190,000 $190,001 to over

$31,288 + 37% on part over $135,000 $51,628 + 45% on part over $190,000

It is good news for those earning less than $45,000 per year, as their rate of tax will fall to 16% compared to the current 19%. The winners are middle income earners. The PM is trying to place a positive spin on it all and argue it is the middle-income earners who are the backbone of the economy and therefore they deserve the biggest tax cuts. “This is a plan for middle Australia that delivers for every Australian taxpayer, right up and down the income ladder,” the PM said. The mantra of years past where Labor was all about supporting the Aussie battler is clearly out the window. It seems Labor is seeking wins with the middle class and more educated Australians. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for Labor when we next go to the ballots and what this will do to current interest rates. A tax cut is likely to increase inflation and could push up interest rates which in turn might negate the benefit of any tax cuts that were created. Time will tell.

Financial Planning Fees – Not deductible Additionally, fees charged by a recognised tax adviser for advice about managing your tax affairs are also deductible (s 25-5).

ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

There has been a lot of debate regarding the deductibility of financial planning fees. The main argument being that if the fees were deductible in nature more people could afford to seek financial planning advice. Unfortunately, the ATO, after much consultation, does not look like it will change is stance on the tax deductibility of advice fees paid by individuals who are not carrying on a business. TD 2023/D4 replaces a determination released back in 1995. However, the ATO has not changed it’s view on the tax treatment of financial advice fees in this new draft determination. For example, upfront advice fees to establish and implement a financial plan are still considered ‘of a capital nature’ and are not deductible based on the guidance outlined in the determination. 97 where the fee directly relates to producing assessable income.

This draft determination is open for public comment until 2 February before it is finalised however we are not confident that their position will change.

A deduction is not available for an advice fee to the extent that: •

it is an outgoing of capital or of a capital nature;

it is an outgoing of a private or domestic nature;

it is incurred in gaining or producing a taxpayer’s exempt or non-assessable, non-exempt income, or a provision of the Act prevents you from deducting it.

Where a fee relates to both income producing advice and for other purposes, the deductible amount should be apportioned based on a fair and reasonable basis. The determination provides guidance on the evidence required to support the amount claimed as a deduction (eg. the adviser can provide an itemised invoice via their Fee Disclosure Statement or advice fee consent form).

Benefits of Working with a Coach Photo by Armand Khoury on Unsplash

LEADERSHIP & TEAM SPECIALIST By Sally Higoe

There is a high possibility you have heard about coaching and all the good stuff. Over the last few years, coaches, especially performance coaches, have become very popular. People are training on how to be mentally strong in the gym, business, career, and almost any other life spectrum that comes to mind. But what is all the fuss about? Why are people adopting a coaching lifestyle? Many people say they do not need coaches, and they are right. No one does. You have got to want to have a coach. However, to do that, you need to compare the advantages and disadvantages of having one. First off, coaching is a precious thing to offer yourself or your organisation. Although some may find disadvantages too, the pros by far outweigh the cons. People working with a coach have natural, tangible, and profound results that will draw you toward wanting to have one.

If coaching wasn’t an effective strategy, why would sports teams spend millions of their budget on hiring a coach? Also, consider all the expenses that come with a technical bench, including coaching assistants. Why would anyone invest so much in something that hasn’t been proven to work? However, they do because coaching provides irrefutable results. All in all, let’s start by answering the most obvious question, Who is a coach? A coach trains a person or team to unlock their potential and achieve a certain target. Coaching is almost similar to mentorship but a little different in that it is more performance-driven and evaluative than mentoring. So, why is it important to work with a coach? Everyone has the power within themselves that needs to be unleashed. They may not even be aware of it. A coach’s job is to help you let it out. A coach gives you the extra nudge and support you need to make it happen. Let’s face it. Life is hard as it is. Any additional pressure from work, friendships, parenting, or whatever else you’ve got

That’s where a coach comes in. A good coach helps lift the weight off you. Coaches answer your difficult questions and help you see things from a fresh perspective. They help you visualise and actualise new possibilities outside your comfort zone to create a better version of yourself. Some people know exactly what they want in life, when and how to get it. However, a big chunk of the population does not have a clear perspective of who they are, what they are capable of, or how to shape their future. A good coach will help you make sense of your life, current situation, and future. Although coaching sessions are different, they all have one thing in common: problem-solving. You may struggle with something you can’t point the finger at for a while. However, a coach will listen to you with utmost keenness; help you by asking the right questions to unearth and address the root problem. They will help you see a problem for what it is and help you devise workable solutions even though you are neck-point in it. How Can Coaches Help Organisations? Whoever introduced coaches workplaces was right to do so.

Some organisations implement coaching programs that introduce third-party coaches to guide their employees through their career journeys. These coaches help teams prioritise tasks, set clear and achievable goals, and solidify their values, all for general workplace improvement.

Coaching junior members in an organisation helps bring up future leaders by cultivating hidden leadership qualities. Executives also learn to manage stress and improve their leadership quality for the better of the organisation through coaching.

However, it is not all about improvement in their work life. Such employees benefit personally from a coach by:

Companies with coaching programs have improved customer and employee retention, profitability, customer satisfaction, and talent acquisition. A professional coach wholesomely helps build a brand and company.

Gaining personal life perspective. Having a deeper understanding of themselves. Taking responsibility and being accountable for actions and commitments. Becoming more self-reliant. Communicating more effectively. Increasing the level of engagement with others.

Creating time to create better results

“ BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins

One of the greatest challenges we have today in our busy lives is having enough time to achieve all that we want for ourselves and our businesses. How can we fit it all in? Often one of the first things we often stop doing is planning what we need to do? We don’t make time to think about what we need to do, we just get on and do it. In the short term this is viable, we need to react to certain situations and just get on with it. The longer we react, rather than be proactive, the more time poor we become! The key to success is to be true to our vision, ensuring all our strategies are well planned and thought out. The more often we do this the quicker the process becomes and more time we create. How? How can we make time to stop and plan when we are already time poor? Five keys to creating additional time in our day. Self-care, Planning, Analysis , Staff training Communication. 1. Self-care One of the most valuable things we can do for ourselves when time-poor, is to make time for ourselves. Recharging our batteries enables us to be mentally and physically ready take on the world again. How we do that is up to the

individual. Go for a swim, walk along the beach, ride a bicycle in the country, train for a marathon, play with your children or grandchildren in the park, play tennis, read a book. Each of these activities and many others will increase mental capacity and clarify ideas and thoughts you may have had. Find ways to do things you don’t have to think about, these will help to clear your mind for the short term. There are times when we “Don’t see the wood for the trees”, as we are too entrenched in the circumstances. How often do we have moments of clarity when we cannot act on them, such as in the shower, or on the toilet or driving the car. How often do we stop thinking about something we are trying to remember so that we can remember? Free up some time, to make opportunities to prioritise your work life balance and take a look at the tasks at hand to plan your actions. 2. Plan Plan Plan Planning is needed to evaluate all the information at hand objectively to prioritise into the areas that need to be addressed. Planning strategies can then be formulated plan and implemented to achieve the desired outcomes with a clear mind planning can commence for a day week, month or year. Each business is different some need to plan

at a daily level, while others need to start up to 12 months out to bring the plans to fruition. The depth of the planning will show in the results achieved. There are 5 key ares to planning Consumer, Competition, Campaigns, Creativity, and course.

The consumer is key Do you know who your key consumer is and what they want? What was the competition doing in the market at the same time both in-stores and online. Marketing campaigns needs to have more time and effort put in at the start to ensure the outcome required. Are the 5 rights of retail covered: Is it the right item to draw the customers in? Is it at the right price? Is there the right amount of stock? Are they the right quality your customers expect from you? Is the promotion at the right time of the year? For the dayto-day business to run smoothly do you have the right staff? Do they have the right training? Do you have the services your clients need? How can you improve

customer service? What processes and procedures do you have in place? When were they last updated? creativity will give the edge you need to showcase the differentiators in your business? This is shown in products, presentation, display, marketing, tied together with a point of difference. The course of action chosen, with the right planning will determine the outcome. Plan for the now and the longer term. Are trends changing? How do you keep abreast of the most current trends? And so much more.

PROPER PLANNING PREVENT POOR PERFORMANCE

4. Staff training

5. Communication

Often when a business starts up friends and family are asked to help out. This helps with cheap staff and misconception that they know you and will know what you want done. Knowing what staff to hire should be based on skill sets required. The best results are born form staff with 5 key skill sets:

Clearing the mind with proper self-care planned into the diary for specific days and weeks enables clear sustainable goals to be set. Communicate these to staff who have been bought on with the skill sets to be able the delegation of specific responsibilities. Keep communication channels open for continued feedback from the staff who experience the day-to-day challenges and opportunities. When the results are analysed ensure the staff are well briefed on the results and your plans going forward. Encourage interaction with staff to keep them fully engaged. This will free up your time to set strategic direction to grow.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Based on what the position requirements are Any specialist training required. The right attitude to fit in with the team. Standards and values. A comprehensive position description and training as applicable.

3. Analyse the results With each plan put in place be sure to analyse the results. For the most successful results what were the factors that made them successful. What worked better than expected? Why? How? Can it be replicated? What did not work? It is not usually the entire plan but more likely to be one or two aspects that did not perform. Analyse the project in its entirety, then drill down and drill down more until all pieces of the puzzle are explored to ascertain which were the factors that led to the results. Was it one of the basic five right: Products, time, quantity, quality, place? Could it be customer service, lack of training, any marketing that was actioned, logistics, Which of the 5C’s has had the greatest impact on the outcome.

Knowing Your Subject

Rule 3 - BE CLEAR AND CONCISE • Don’t speak too fast • Get to the point quickly, especially if you want the video to be short Rule 4 - BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU ARE SAYING • If you don’t believe in the product then a customer won’t buy it • The camera sees everything and it will see if you are not genuine Product Marketing Alliance defines a Subject Matter Expert as are highly skilled people who’ve developed in-depth knowledge around a product, technology, or process. They tell clients how a product works and how it can help solve their challenges. A good subject matter expert is capable of translating all kinds of features, functions, and concepts into simple terms, sharing their own knowhow with clients. This should be you. By following the simple above rules you will become the subject matter expert and be able to easily win clients and make great videos.

VIDEO PRODUCTION By Allison Groot

When we go to make a video either on our smart devices, laptop or computer there are 2 key things we need to think about: what you are going to say and how you are going to say it. Both of these things can be overwhelming to think about especially when you aren’t confident in your delivery or if it’s a new service or product. Consider starting with the idea • Is it an informative video? Would you like to educate customers on how to use the product? Is it a sales video offering a discount of 10% with every purchase? Can the customer try before they buy? Then what would you like to say about the product? • Do you want to talk about the colours, the way it moves, the ergonomics, how unique it is, maybe even a special feature?

Once you have a clear idea and general flow of what you want to say, think about the tone you want to use. Will it be relaxed with lots of smiling? Do you want it to be informative but light-hearted? Would you like to use comedy or do you want it to be a hard sell?

Quick Tip: If you are time strapped most suppliers have “how to” videos that you can watch and refer customers too. Sometimes the suppliers will give you the video to use on your website - you just need to ask.

If you would like to know more about how Yes Today Media can help you become a subject matter expert or have questions… send us an email or call.

Often we forget some simple and easy rules when making videos and feeling assured that we know what we are doing. Rule 1 - KNOW YOUR SUBJECT • Learn about the product - How it works • Play with it - What does the bottle feel like etc • Try it out - How does it feel, the texture etc • Get other some friends to use it - Get feedback • Become the subject matter expert Rule 2 - BE AUTHENTIC • Talk the way you talk, not the way you think you should talk. If you don’t it will look really awkward on the video

Pure Colours to Inspire Your Life: 2024 Interior Trends For Everyone

PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof

Did you spend too much time in 2023 starting at your walls? For many, 2024 was a wakeup call not to put off your dreams any longer. We might have felt disconnected from our community and the outdoors in 2023, and the interior trends of 2024 are all about restablishing that connection to our sense of self, support, and untainted nature. We can’t control events around us, but we can command the inner landscape of our homes. Earthy, neutral tones are the trend of 2024, as people reimagine a calmer, more grounded life. It’s a range of milky almonds, silky cocoons, nutmeg and creamy lattes. You’d be forgiven for thinking the tones of 2024 were ingredients from your pantry. These placid tones are poised to make your homecoming to feel like a day spa, sanctuary or upmarket cafe. Rediscover your home as both relaxing and restorative, and a natural canvas for your family’s self-expression and enjoyment.

A huge space for love and caring blossoms inside a child when they experience the innocent joy of patting their first puppy, kitten, or rabbit. The colours of 2024, too, are tactile, warm and inviting. They have a heartbeat that evokes a memory of simpler, more natural times.

The colour palette of 2024 is a spread good enough to eat. And like a balanced diet, you can bring in rich and fruity colours.

And yet we all crave something a little more exciting, to evoke the thrill we feel when we are truly grateful for feeling alive.

I’ve been painting Geelong’s premier homes for more than three decades, and I always love to work with new clients to help you bring to life the home of your dreams.

The tones of 2024 are earthy, warm, and natural, but that doesn’t mean they are boring. Earthy tones provide the perfect backdrop for eclectic decor to stand out in that perfect Instagram worthy colour pop. The benefit of refreshing your interior paint with earthy tones is that they are colours to endure through the ages. They will be the complementary backdrop to fashionable decor for decades to come.

Consider a plum or eggplant feature wall, or a pinch of paprika or turmeric, to add drama and depth.

We’ve been through a tough year and 2024’s colour selection is here to harken calmer times ahead. Contact me to talk about how to make your home embody the kind of beauty that lasts for centuries.

For more painting advice in 2024 contact Dahllof Painting Services at sjd67@ bigpond.net.au. We will be happy to answer all your inquiries.

You can bring lushness and diversity to your colour palette by adding rejuvenating greens. With the resurgence of interest in sustainability and regeneration, use potplants or decor to allow the forest to flourish at home. FEBRUARY 2024 | FIND GEELONG

Personal Insurance FINANCIAL PLANNER By Warren Strybosch

Financial planning is about protecting your wealth as well as building your wealth. It is easy to think that you won’t get sick or hurt and ignore the need to protect the very thing that generates your wealth - your own health and your ability to work. But if accident or serious illness does occur the impacts can be devastating. It’s worth remembering that no matter how much expert advice you receive or how well you manage your finances there is always a risk that you could suffer an early death or serious illness or injury. Where that leaves you and your loved ones in the future depends on the wealth protection strategy you have in place. Risks you could face in the future may include: • • • • • •

Emotional, physical or mental trauma Death or serious illness Loss of income due to temporary or permanent incapacity Damage to your house or other personal assets Theft of, and/or damage to business assets Public liability and/or professional indemnity risks

Your financial plan should include a strategy to minimise risks that could jeopardise both your present and future plans. In simple terms, if you cannot afford to lose something then you should try to protect your exposure. Insurance can provide a cost-effective protection mechanism.

This may take a combination of personal, general and health insurance policies. There are many different aspects to insurance and it is best to tailor a package that suits your needs as well as your budget. How the Strategy Works Personal risk insurance protects your wealth accumulation strategy by providing money if you are no longer able to earn an income due to disability, trauma or death. The money received can help with medical bills, loan repayments and living expenses. Personal risk insurance protects your wealth accumulation strategy by providing money if you are no longer able to earn an income due to disability, trauma or death. The money received can help with medical bills, loan repayments and living expenses. Many people often underestimate the importance of personal insurance which has led to a problem with underinsurance in Australia. It is important that you consider having enough cover to replace your income and cover expenses so that the personal tragedy does not create financial tragedy. You can apply for insurance to cover you in the event of death, temporary or permanent disability, or trauma (critical illness). Outlined below is a brief outline of types of personal risk insurance. Life Insurance The most common type of cover is life insurance (term life insurance). Life insurance will pay a lump sum to your estate or specific beneficiaries in the event of death or in some cases, on diagnosis of a terminal illness.

The advantage of life insurance is peace of mind that your death will minimise any financial hardship for your loved ones. Life insurance can be used to pay off debts, provide an income for dependents, cover funeral expenses and generally assist in maintaining your family’s lifestyle in the event of your death. With this type of cover, your family would not be burdened by debt and may be protected from selling assets to pay debts or cover living expenses. Total and Permanent Disability Insurance Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) can prevent you from working and require expensive medical treatment and ongoing care. TPD insurance aims to provide a lump sum if you suffer an illness or injury and you: • • •

Are permanently unable to work again or Are unable to care for yourself independently, or Suffer significant and permanent cognitive impairment.

TPD insurance pays a lump sum which can be used to pay for medical expenses, ongoing care costs and to meet living expenses for you and your family. The definition of TPD can vary and may include options for a range of occupations, including homemakers. Options that you can choose from include: •

Any Occupation TPD: The benefit will be paid if you are unlikely to be gainfully employed in any business, profession or occupation for which you are reasonable suited by your education, training or experience.

FEBRUARY 2024 | FIND GEELONG 17

www.findgeelong.com.au

This definition is generally less expensive than an Own Occupation definition but for some people, it may be harder to meet.

Own Occupation TPD: The benefit will be paid if you are unlikely to ever be gainfully employed in your own occupation. Own Occupation TPD provides a generous definition as it is specific to your occupation and is particularly suitable for specialist occupations. The premiums for this type of definition are more expensive than Any Occupation TPD.

You should discuss your circumstances with your financial planner. Trauma Insurance A serious illness or injury can prevent you from working for a period of time and may require expensive medical treatment. Trauma insurance (also known as critical illness, crisis or recovery insurance) aims to provide a lump sum upon the diagnosis of a specified illness or injury such as lifethreatening cancer, stroke or heart attack. Trauma insurance pays a lump sum that can be used to pay medical expenses and reduce any financial pressure while you focus on recovery. This payment is made regardless of whether you are able to return to work, and is designed to relieve financial pressure at a time when you are under great stress. Child Trauma insurance can be added to your policy to cover a seriously ill or injured child. This provides a lump sum to help you cover medical treatment and eases financial worry for parents who may need to take time off work to provide care. Income Protection Insurance

cost of the income protection insurance. Benefit period: Starting at the end of the waiting period, the benefit period is the maximum time the benefit is paid. Options range from two years, five years or until a specified age such as age 65. Types of contracts include: Agreed value: The monthly benefit is agreed at the time of application and will not reduce even if your income decreases after your policy commenced. This option provides certainty and peace of mind on how much income you will receive. If details of your income are provided at the time of application the benefit can be guaranteed so that no further financial assessment is required at the time of claim. Agreed value contracts are not available to new policy holders from 31 March 2020, however existing policy holders with an agreed value policy will still be able to increase their benefit amount. Indemnity value: The monthly benefit paid may differ to the monthly benefit insured as it will depend on your earnings at the time of a claim. The monthly benefit received will be based on your gross income at the time of claim up to the monthly benefit insured. Details of proof of income will be required at the time of claim. You can generally claim a tax deduction for the premiums paid on an income protection policy (other that any portion of the premium that is attributable to benefits of a capital nature such as physical injury or critical illness) However, income payments received are considered taxable income. Premiums Premiums for all types of personal insurance will vary with age, gender and

smoking status. Occupation and medical history may also affect the cost of premiums. Premium options include: Level premiums: The premium rate is fixed when you start the policy and does not change as you get older except in line with CPI indexation. Level premiums are initially higher (than stepped premiums) but will be more stable over time. This can help with affordability and reduce the risk that premiums will become unaffordable as you get older. Stepped premiums: The premium rate increases each year according to you age. Stepped premiums are initially more affordable than level premiums but over time may become more expensive. However, this option can provide you with flexibility as your needs change over time. Your financial adviser can assist in determining which premium option is most appropriate for you. Ownership Life, TPD and income protection policies can be owned personally or through a superannuation fund. Trauma insurance can be owned personally. When held within a superannuation fund, the policy is owned by the trustees of the superannuation fund, for the benefit of the member. When making a choice of how to own the policy you need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Income Protection insurance aims to minimise the financial impact of sickness or injury by replacing income lost during a prolonged absence from work. A monthly benefit will assist you to meet living expenses and debt repayments. Income Protection policies will usually pay a benefit up to 75% of your gross income (some policies may pay higher) after a waiting period. Payments continue for a set term or until you return to work, whichever occurs first. Waiting period: This is the time period that you must be off work before an income benefit is payable. Waiting periods range from 14 days to two years. Generally, the longer the waiting period, the lower the FEBRUARY 2024 | FIND GEELONG

Premiums are paid using contributions into the fund (e.g. employer contributions) or your superannuation savings – this can help to ease a drain on your cash flow. Beat the sugar cravings

sugar cane which means you not only miss out on those nutrients, but you also miss out on the natural mechanism that helps you to say “no”. The empty carbohydrate Carbohydrates are a great form of energy and particularly important for children as they grow, or for those that are active. But not all carbohydrates are equal. Fruit and vegetables also contain high amounts of energy, but have the added benefits of vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Since unused carbohydrates are stored as body fat, there is little to gain by using sugar as an energy source, and there are so many other negative effects of sugar on your health. Is your gut bacteria working against you? Along with fruit and vegetables, wholegrains and legumes are also energy sources that contain minerals and fibre. These foods give both the energy you need to function as well as the added benefits of these nutrients. What’s interesting is that the fibre here acts as a fuel for the beneficial bacteria in your gut, keeping you healthy; but the harmful bacteria actually feeds on sugar and works to increase your sugar cravings. Going cold turkey What’s interesting is that once you cut out sugar from your diet, it’s no longer appealing. Your taste buds get used to enjoying naturally sweet foods and sugar just doesn’t taste nice anymore. But getting to that point is where the difficulty lies. If you decide to go ‘cold turkey’, you will likely have around 3 days where your cravings ramp up and your self-control is genuinely tested. If you prefer to take your time and slowly reduce your sugar intake, it will be an easier ride, but it will take longer. Neither way is right or wrong, choose what will work best for you. The sugar craving seems to be unsatiable, whilst with honey or dried fruit, you get to a point where you just don’t enjoy it anymore and so you stop eating it. Junior Mayor Hteemoo Yohellaymusaw: Together with the Council, my commitment is to advocate for every young person in our diverse community. I believe that by working together, the Youth Council can make a real impact. My goal as Junior Mayor is to engage and collaborate with fellow community members to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and create a brighter and more inclusive future for everyone.

The Youth Council contains three representatives from each of the four council wards: Bellarine, Brownbill, Kardinia and Windermere, with Wednesday’s induction session signalling the formal commencement of their 12-month term. A term on the Youth Council offers invaluable opportunities for young participants to actively engage with and learn about civic and democratic processes. Simultaneously, it provides Council with a unique channel to seek advice and input from the youth on matters that directly impact them.

Twelve young people passionate about making a difference in the community were inducted into the 2024 Youth Council on Wednesday.

Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan congratulated the newly elected Youth Council members, recognising the honour and considerable responsibility that comes with being appointed as At the group’s first official event at City Hall, youth councillors. Young Minds Unite in the Co-design of a Vibrant Youth Hub in Central Geelong The co-design process for a Youth Hub in central Geelong is well underway with the recently elected 2024 Youth Council contributing their feedback. An information session for young people, parents and other interested community members will take place Thursday 1 February from 4.30pm-6pm and codesign workshops will be held with young people (12-25 years of age) at the future Geelong Youth Hub site (corner Gheringhap Street and Transit Place) on Monday 19 February, 4.30pm-6pm and Wednesday 13 March, 4.30pm-6pm. The project is being made possible thanks to $400,000 of funding provided to the City under the Victorian Government’s Youth Hubs grant program 2022-23, to support the establishment of a youth hub in central Geelong.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken: The insights and perspectives from young people across the region will help define the space, and the type of activities, programs, and services that will be offered. We want to encourage our young people to have an influence on the projects and decisions that will impact them and their peers. Christine Couzens State Member for Geelong: It is great to see the works of the Youth Hub come together, after years of ideas and visions that the members from the Youth Council have put in. I am very excited to see what this will bring for our youth in Geelong and wider community.

Junior Mayor Hteemoo Yohellaymusaw: We want to make sure that the voices of other young people are heard, and we’re really open to taking on feedback and ideas from across the community. The City has committed to the establishment of a Geelong Youth Hub and allocated the Busport building for the two-year Geelong Youth Hub pilot starting in January 2025 running until December 2026.

The groundwork for this initiative was laid through collaboration with the Youth Council during the development of the Geelong Youth Hub Feasibility Study in 2022. To learn how to register for the information session or co-design workshops visit our Geelong Youth Hub page. By competing the survey, you could win a $50 voucher, terms and conditions apply. The online engagement runs until 15 March.

Co-design is a collaborative journey where diverse perspectives converge, fostering innovation and inclusivity to shape solutions that resonate with the collective needs and aspirations of a community.

New project gets tails wagging at Aldershot Reserve The City of Greater Geelong will build a fenced dog park at Aldershot Reserve in St Albans Park with the help of funding from the Australian Government. The project is a key element of the Aldershot Reserve Master Plan endorsed by the Council in 2021. Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Member for Corio the Hon. Richard Marles said: “The Albanese Government is thrilled to announce in partnership with the City of Greater Geelong that the local communities and their fourlegged friends will be able to enjoy a new fenced dog park at Aldershot Reserve. Dog parks are a key part of local communities not only for pets but owners alike. We have a growing number across the community and we look forward to seeing this recreated at St Albans Park.”

Mayor Trent Sullivan: “I extend my thanks to the Australian government for its $852,133 allocation via phase 3 of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) fund. Aldershot Reserve is a place where many people like to exercise their dogs, and a fenced dog park was a frequent request during the development of the reserve master plan. We’ve seen the huge popularity of the fenced dog park in Belmont and we’re pleased to now deliver a facility for the community in Geelong’s eastern suburbs.”

The fenced dog park was placed on hold via the Council’s 2023-24 budget process due to rising construction costs but can now be immediately reinstated in the City’s capital works program.

The park will feature a mixture of surfaces with separate areas for active and passive dogs, and works will include external connecting paths, internal paths, landscaping, park furniture, fencing and drainage. The City has also recently gathered community feedback to help in the upcoming renewal of the playground within the reserve.

NOT-FOR-PROFIT OF THE MONTH

In the vast landscape of social challenges faced by children, Friend In Me, an Australian charity founded in 2016, stands out as a beacon of hope. The organisation’s roots delve deep into the empathy stirred by a mother’s poignant narrative about her son’s isolated birthday party. What began as a compassionate response evolved into a movement addressing social exclusion and fostering inclusivity for thousands of children and their families. Louise Larkin, the driving force behind Friend In Me, was profoundly moved by a mother’s account of her son’s birthday party, where no one showed up. This heart-wrenching revelation propelled Louise to take action against the pervasive issue of social exclusion impacting Australian children. Motivated by a sincere desire to make a difference, Louise orchestrated a special event for children who had experienced exclusion. The response exceeded all expectations, with over 2000 children and parents attending. This event marked the modest beginnings of Friend In Me, highlighting the power of community and the profound impact that a single act of kindness can have. From its humble inception, Friend In Me has undergone exponential growth, surpassing the anticipated outcomes of the initial event. What began as a one-time gathering has transformed into a movement, drawing participation from thousands of individuals in the charity’s events. Friend In Me brings attention to a disconcerting statistic: about one in every six Australian children experiences social exclusion. However, the true figure could be higher, given that social exclusion often occurs covertly. The charity has become a formidable advocate for disadvantaged and at-risk children, tirelessly combating inequality and exclusivity.

FEBruary 2024

Louise Larkin envisions Friend In Me as a catalyst for change, determined to ensure that every child, regardless of background, can live a life filled with opportunity and acceptance. She emphasises the importance of education and understanding, stating, “Educating yourself, asking questions, and being open to understanding the diverse challenges people face is pivotal to building a better world for every child.” Since 2017, Friend In Me has successfully raised $500,000, a testament to the community’s support for their mission. The organisation aims to raise an additional $100,000 to fund community events, online education programs, and local play spaces. The commitment to financial transparency and accountability has garnered support from various sectors, including the proud endorsement of. Thank you to amazing organisations like CATCH who Friend in Me were so honoured to be a part of their Round Up Program have allowed Friend in Me to have funds where we can continue our mission of ‘Creating an inclusive world so no child feels left behind.’ Friend In Me organises various initiatives, including Family Fun Days, Community Days, workshops, and programs aimed at educating the local community about the importance of creating accepting environments for all children. These events notonly offer a day of joy and laughter but also serve as platforms for building understanding and breaking down barriers.

Friend In Me recognises the significance of physical spaces in shaping childhood experiences. The organisation aims to fund local play spaces that are designed to be inclusive, ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, have access to safe and welcoming environments for play and socialisation.

The heart of Friend In Me’s mission lies in their Family Fun Days. These events are designed to provide children, who may have felt excluded in the past, with an opportunity to create lasting memories in an atmosphere of acceptance. Families come together, forging connections and friendships that extend beyond the events themselves. These events go beyond the boundaries of individual families and neighborhoods, fostering a sense of unity that is essential for creating a more inclusive society. Friend In Me recognises the importance of education in fostering long-term change. The organisation conducts workshops that aim to educate the local community about the challenges faced by disadvantaged children and how everyone can contribute to creating a more inclusive environment. By empowering individuals with knowledge, Friend In Me seeks to create advocates for change in every corner of society. In an era where connectivity knows no bounds, Friend In Me has expanded its reach through online education programs. These programs not only cater to the local community but also extend their influence to a broader audience, encouraging a global conversation about the importance of inclusivity for all children.

Friend In Me, under the compassionate leadership of Louise, has emerged as a force for positive change in the lives of Australian children. From the initial event that sparked the organisation’s creation to the ongoing commitment to inclusivity, Friend In Me continues to grow, inspire, and make a lasting impact. The charity’s dedication to combating social exclusion, fostering understanding, and creating inclusive spaces is not only transforming individual lives but also contributing to building a more compassionate and accepting society for all. As Friend In Me looks toward the future, the hope is that their movement will continue to gain momentum, creating ripples of change that extend far beyond the borders of Australia.

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation. You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop. We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town. Patrick Dangerfield and Tom Stewart will again lead the Cats into the 2024 season as captain, and vice captain respectively. Dangerfield became Geelong’s 54th VFL/AFL captain last season after sharing the vice captaincy with Stewart in 2022 and having served in the role under former captain Joel Selwood since the 2017 season.

To coincide with the confirmation of the Club’s leaders for 2024, fans who sign up as a 2024 member before the end of January will have the opportunity to win a spot in the team photo alongside Dangerfield and Stewart this February.

“I was very happy; I was honoured, honestly, it was quite a shock,” Favell said. “It is going to help me a lot with my studies going forward and being able to play football and do everything that I want to do. It just takes a bit of the pressure off with the rest of my activities.

Abby Favell has been awarded the den Hollander Geelong Cats VFLW Scholarship through Deakin University

The scholarship has been awarded annually through the generosity of Jane and Jeroen den Hollander to an emerging player within the Geelong VFLW program who is also a student at Deakin University. Jane den Hollander was the Vice-Chancellor at Deakin from 2010 to 2019 is a strong believer in the power of education to change the lives

On the field, Stewart’s resume speaks for itself, having collected five All-Australian blazers, a premiership in 2022, and last season, became a dual Carji Greeves Medallist after averaging 23.2 disposals, 8.3 marks, 8.4 intercepts, and 7.2 rebounds per game, reinforcing his position as one of the game’s elite defenders.

Favell, who is about to enter the fourth year of her Occupational Therapy course, said she was thrilled to receive the scholarship.

Favell Awarded den Hollander Scholarship

Geelong VFLW midfielder Abby Favell has been awarded the den Hollander Geelong Cats VFLW Scholarship through Deakin University, following her impressive first season at the club in 2023.

Stewart’s leadership potential was also recognised early in his tenure at GMHBA Stadium, joining the Cats leadership team in 2019 after debuting for the Club in 2017.

“I’m studying Occupational Therapy and I’ve just finished my third year. I love it. I definitely think it’s what I want to do. It’s lots of placements and lots of hard units, but I think in the end it will be worth it.

of individuals and communities. The den Hollanders are also strong advocates for gender equity, including in sport.

“It’s a very broad field, so I’m sure that I’ll have a job waiting for me for the rest of my life, which is really exciting. It’s a degree that offers you lots of opportunities.”

Favell crossed to Geelong in 2023 after stints with the Hawthorn VFLW program and the Murray Bushrangers, joining the Cats’ VFLW leadership group in her inaugural season in the Hoops.

Deakin University is the Official Education Partner of the Geelong Cats and are proud co-major partners of the Club’s AFLW program.

Established in 2019, the scholarship boasts Cats AFLW stars Nina Morrison and Becky Webster among its recipients and aims to make studying easier for those trying to balance their workloads.

The 6-foot guard/forward brings a strong basketball acumen to the side, representing Australia in the under 18 Gems side in 2018 – Plus a wealth of college basketball experience at the University of Texas, where she was part of both a Big12 Conference Championship winning side and the Elite 8 at March Madness, as well as winning a Sunbelt Conference Championship with James Madison University. But it was Kobe’s individual stats and accomplishments that made her a much sought after signing for Geelong United, averaging 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game in her freshman season (earning NJCAA Division 1 firstteam All-America honours as a freshman at Gillette College, the only first-team AllAmerican as a freshman), and 15.5 points (shooting at 43.3% from beyond the arc) during her sophomore campaign. King-Hawea was also the first ever female NBA Global Academy scholarship athlete, which through the Basketball Australia Center Of Excellence was her initial link to Geelong United Women’s Head Coach Matthew Paton, who is

excited for their reunion – “I am extremely pleased to have Kobe joining our Geelong United NBL1 program. I have tracked Kobe’s journey since I coached her at the BA Centre of Excellence and jumped at the opportunity to reunite with her after her collegiate career. Kobe is the definition of ‘x-factor’ and I have no doubt she will very quickly become a fan favourite through her exciting style of play and great personality – she is a high quality player and will be a perfect cultural fit for our program.”

Kobe, who has signed on for 2 years through until the end of the 2025 season, is eager to get on the court and start her NBL1 journey – “I’m very exited to be part the Geelong United family. The one goal is to win, but to also create and keep the culture here at Geelong Untied. My development is what I look forward to, I am eager to develop my game under Coach Matt Paton.” For all the latest on the signing of Kobe, check back soon for more with the Geelong Times.

Matildas at Home Review: Simon makes her return after 480 days; Yallop scores and assists Kyah Simon made her return to competitive football on the weekend, coming off the bench for the Central Coast Mariners 480 days after rupturing her ACL for Tottenham Hotspur in October 2022.

Jada Whyman and Cortnee Vine started the match for Sydney and both played the full 90 minutes. It is particularly encouraging for Vine, who looks to now be back at full fitness after struggling with injury this season.

It allowed the Reds back into the game, and goals to Isabel Hodgson – repurposed in the last few games a centre-forward – and Nanako Sasaki either side of the break was enough for the home side to secure three points.

Meanwhile, Tameka Yallop scored one goal and assisted another as Brisbane secured their fourth win of the season.

Courtney Newbon again took the gloves for Victory as Lydia Williams was ruled out with a continuing ankle injury. Elise Kellond-Knight and Alex Chidiac started in midfield for the home side, while Emily Gielnik came off the bench at half-time.

The Wellington Phoenix found themselves back in the winners circle after overcoming Canberra United 2-0. A brace to Mariana Speckmaier gave the home side a two-goal advantage early in the second half. Canberra had an opportunity to get back in the game after Phoenix goalkeeper Rylee Foster was sent off in the 66th minute. However, substitute Brianna Edwards saved the ensuring penalty with her first touch, and Wellington held on to the clean sheet with ten players.

Read our review of all of the action below. On Thursday evening, Western United continued their tremendous record against Melbourne teams, defeating Melbourne City 3-1. Last season’s golden boot winner Hannah Keane scored her first brace of the season while Young Matilda Kahli Johnson – coming off the bench in the second half on her return from injury – made it three. Chloe Logarzo played the full match and was heavily involved in the action, including assisting Keane’s second goal. The Big Blue between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC ended in a 1-1 stalemate, an early goal to 16-year-old Maddie Caspers cancelled out by a first-half Rachel Lowe penalty. Sydney FC dominated the chances – despite having only 39% possession – but were not able to make it count.

Western Sydney Wanderers’ four-game winning streak came to a grinding halt on Saturday, as the Brisbane Roar defeated them 3-1 at Marconi Stadium. Despite early Wanderers pressure the Roar struck first, a wonderful through ball from Tameka Yallop finding Kijah Stephenson, who calmly slotted it home. Holly Caspers equalised before half-time but goals to Yallop – who started the match, and was substituted in secondhalf stoppage time - and American striker Mia Corbin after the break sealed the result for Brisbane. Adelaide United came from behind to defeat Perth Glory 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Glory struck first after a nice volley from Hana Lowry, but Perth otherwise struggled to create opportunities.

Kyah Simon made her first appearance of the season – and played her first competitive football since October 2022 – as the Central Coast Mariners were 2-0 victors in the F3 Derby against the Newcastle Jets. Chinese international Wurigumula struck early before Paige Hayward made sure of the result late in the second half. Simon was introduced in the 83rd minute to warm applause from the crowd and will be hoping to increase her involvement in coming weeks. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FEBRUARY 2024 | FIND GEELONG

Geelong waterfront

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards. This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards. There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

poppy kettle playground

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer. The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net. The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

geelong arts and cultural precinct Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions, and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong. The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars. The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

western Beach People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s.

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away. Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront. Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. AGE CARE BASICS – RAD vs DAP

AGED CARE By Warren Strybosch

When moving a loved one into care, there are several costs to consider. The first one is regarding the Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD). If your loved one is not assessed as being ‘Low Means’, something we will cover in next month’s article, then you will be required to pay the RAD. The RAD is set by the accommodation provider and is a lump sum payment required to secure a room in a facility. RADs can start as little as $450,000 and can be as high as $1,250,000. It can be a very scary thought for some people because often, most people moving into care, do not have a lazy $1,000,000 lying around to pay the RAD. If you cannot pay the RAD, then you might need to consider paying the Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP). The DAP is like rental payments. Instead of paying, less say, the $1,000,000 RAD, you would pay a daily rate of rent based on that $1,000,000 RAD. How much you pay is determined by the government who set the maximum permissible interest rate (MPIR) (currently at 8.38%) to your agreed room price (RAD cost). If the RAD or room cost is $1,000,000, then the daily DAP fee would be $229.59 per day ($1,000,000 x 8.38% divide 365 days).

The decision between paying a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) or a Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) when entering residential aged care in Australia depends on various factors, including your financial situation, preferences, and long-term goals. Here are some considerations to help you make an informed decision:

Paying a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD): Pros: 1. Refundability: The RAD is refundable when you leave the aged care facility. This can be beneficial for estate planning, as the refunded amount can be passed on to your beneficiaries. 2. Potential for Interest Earnings: Some aged care providers offer to pay interest on the RAD. While the interest rate is set by the government, this can contribute to the overall return on your investment. 3. Certainty of Lump Sum Payment: You make a one-time lump sum payment, providing certainty regarding the upfront cost of accommodation. 4. No Potential Impact on Age Pension: Whilst the RAD is considered an asset, it is not considered a financial asset and therefore no income is deemed to be earned on this amount. Any amount paid as a RAD is also excluded from the age pension asset test.

Cons: 1. Reduced Cash Flow: Paying a large lump sum may impact your immediate cash flow, especially if you have limited liquid assets. 2. Avoiding Daily High Interest Charges: As discussed above, if you do not pay the RAD, you must pay the DAP. With a current interest rate of 8.38%, the DAP can become an expensive option over the long term.

Paying a Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP): Pros: 1. Preservation of Lump Sum: Opting for a DAP allows you to preserve your lump sum, which can be advantageous for maintaining financial flexibility and addressing future needs. 2. Smaller, Ongoing Payments: The DAP is an ongoing daily payment, which may suit individuals who prefer smaller, more manageable payments over time.

Cons: 1. Non-Refundable: Unlike the RAD, the DAP is not refundable. You won't receive a lump sum back when you leave the aged care facility. 2. Longer-Term Cost: Over an extended period, the total cost of the DAP may surpass the equivalent RAD amount, depending on your length of stay.

& Considerations: 1. Financial Assessment: Conduct a thorough financial assessment to understand your assets, income, and how different payment options may impact your overall financial situation. 2. Cash Flow: Consider your current and future cash flow needs. If you have sufficient liquid assets to pay a RAD without compromising your lifestyle, it might be a viable option. 3. Estate Planning: If passing on a lump sum to your beneficiaries is a priority, the refundability of the RAD may be appealing. 4. Negotiation: Be open to negotiating with the aged care provider regarding the RAD amount. Some providers may be willing to adjust the RAD based on individual circumstances. 5. Financial Advice: Seek advice from a financial advisor or aged care specialist to ensure you understand the implications of each payment option and how it aligns with your financial goals.

February 2024

AGED CARE payment. If you choose to pay a lump sum (the RAD) you then have 6 months to pay the money to your provider. If after the 6-month period, you cannot afford to pay the RAD, the provider can either proceed to sue you for not meeting your contractual obligations or they can remove your loved ones from the premises for non-payment. It is better to agree to pay the DAP even if you believe you have enough funds to pay the RAD. Whilst paying the DAP, at any time you can make contributions to the RAD, which will then reduce the DAP payments. Ultimately, the choice between RAD and DAP is a personal one, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It's important to carefully assess your financial situation, goals, and preferences before making goals, and preferences before making a decision. Consulting with professionals can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed choice.
