About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch

The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing

and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

When Australians celebrate the Christmas “holiday season”, we typically refer to the time frame from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day. But soon after, in numerous Asian nations, there’s another big holiday that brings people together with friends and family; Chinese New Year! Sometimes referred to as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year is one of the most important and extensively observed holidays worldwide. Families gather on this colourful and joyous event to celebrate the start of the Chinese lunar year, reflect on the past and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. There are many traditions and practices surrounding Chinese New Year, offering an understanding of the rituals, symbolism, and festive mood that envelop this fortunate time. Chinese New Year is believed to have originated during the Shang dynasty’s control in the fourteenth century BC. Its history is rife with folklore. According to one legend, peasants were assaulted at the beginning of each year by a monster known as Nian (“Year”). Red, bright lights, and loud noises were all things Nian feared. These were tools used by people to drive the beast away. A long, colourful dragon puppet is paraded through the streets as the centrepiece of celebrations during dragon dancing, which is popular throughout the nation since the dragon is a Chinese symbol of strength and good fortune. In addition, many extensively clean their homes during the New Year’s celebration to remove any unfavourable energy from the previous year. Firecrackers, fireworks, and red clothing and decorations are therefore common elements of celebrations to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the good fortune and prosperity of the new one. Money is handed to young people in vibrant red envelopes. Chinese New Year is also a time for feasting and family visits. This is a time-honored celebration that blends ancient traditions with modern festivities. As families come together to share meals, exchange gifts, and revel in the vibrant customs, the spirit of renewal and hope permeates the air. Whether you’re a participant or an observer, understanding the rich tapestry of traditions associated with Chinese New Year provides a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of this joyous occasion. As we welcome the Year of the Dragon, may it be filled with prosperity, good fortune, and the warmth of shared moments with loved ones. Gong Xi Fa Cai! - Wishing you a prosperous New Year!

Geelong Column By Mayor Trent Sullivan

There is so much energy and excitement in Geelong at this time of year. Drawn to the bay, the beaches, and our stunning dining options, visitors descend on our region to enjoy world-class events and attractions. The total overnight population for Greater Geelong and the Bellarine reaches 400,000 people during the peak January period. This is a crucial time for our tourism and hospitality sector, with more than 6400 jobs supported by the massive influx. On the Bellarine, about 30,000 local produce lovers are drawn to the Portarlington Mussel Festival, where they can choose from hundreds of market stalls. The region’s breweries, cideries and distilleries will take centre stage in Johnstone Park later in the month, for the Geelong Beer Festival. With a headline music act, Bag Raiders, among the entertainment, the revamped festival offers a broader experience than its name suggests. Of course, January would not be complete without the two titans. The Festival of Sails and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race are returning as strong as ever. With a rich history dating back to 1844, the Festival of Sails combines elite level competition with a buzzing atmosphere of cultural activities and entertainment along the foreshore. Geelong was thrust onto the world cycling stage when the UCI World Championships were held in 2010. But our local Tour De France winner, Cadel Evans, has ensured that we are a permanent fixture on the global circuit, with the stunning race named after him. The reputation of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race grows each year, and it continues to be well supported by residents and visitors alike. There is so much happening across the region, that there really is something for everyone. Visit Council’s events guide at www.geelongaustralia.com.au/events to plan your next day out.

How to Set Ambitious Goals in 2024 and Achieve Them All Photo by Armand Khoury on Unsplash

LEADERSHIP & TEAM SPECIALIST By Sally Higoe

All right, special goal-crushing lads, listen up! The fact that you’re reading this means your revolutionary wheels are already spinning even as we prepare to usher in another year. You could be envisioning the mountain tops you intend to claim over the next 12 months, whether starting that big venture, mastering a new skill, or fostering world peace (hey, dream big!). On your way to your goals, you’ll likely be caught between endless barrages of emails, needy friends blowing up your phone, and one too many Netflix movie binges. With such distractions, even the most ambitious plans can get swept away easily. In the words of the award-winning actor-cum-motivational speaker Denzel Washington,

“Dreams without Goals are just dreams, and ultimately, they fuel DISAPPOINTMENT. On the road to achieving your dreams, you must apply DISCIPLINE, but more importantly, CONSISTENCY because without commitment, you never start, but without consistency, you never finish.”

Lucky for you, this guide is packed with a surefire way to help any visionary dreamer navigate the murky waters of goal-achievement and manifest those once-in-a-lifetime goals over the next year. First things first, get specific. Rather than careening through another year without intentional direction, try getting into the specifics of what you’d like to achieve. Dedicate some distraction-free time and reflect on 2023. Which strategies worked out well? What things distracted you? Which goals matter most to you in the new year? How do you intend to achieve them? Quiz yourself so that you become clear about the goals you’d like to achieve. If you have clear goals, it’s easy to chart an ideal route to their realisation. Second, prioritise your goals. Multi-tasking is a useful skill, but only if you get past the pitfalls of fragmented attention. Concentrating on two or more tasks or goals simultaneously often lessens your overall output since you’ll not only have short attention spans per task, but also feel more anxious and eventually overwhelmed. To make significant strides in realising this new years’ dreams, direct your efforts and resources towards ensuring your output is top-quality. Focusing on a single task

at a go deepens your engagement and activates different cognitive pathways that allow for a richer understanding of the material or task in question. Design a distraction-minimising environment. For those who work office jobs, it’s easy to feel like a goldfish in a notification bowl with the infinite distraction points present everyday. In most workplaces, there’s always a guy who thinks every passing thought deserves a drop-by, an intern whose innocent questions can derail your train of thought for hours, and let’s not even get started on the siren call of hallway gossip. If you’re at home, the endless pop-ups and calls from friends serve the same purpose - they distract you. When you’re constantly bombarded with distractions, you might be “busy,” but that doesn’t mean you’re “productive.” To create a distraction-free environment, try; •

JANUARY 2024 | FIND GEELONG

That aside, build momentum and confidence. After outlining your goals and all the additional details therein, you’ll likely have an extensive to-do list that can seem overwhelming. You can remedy this by starting with small tasks and building confidence and momentum as you progress. Commence by completing tasks so small they’d make a hamster yawn. That’s right! Don’t start with tasks and actions that’ll likely demotivate you. So, you finally said no to attending that party and worked on your goal? Boom, feather earned! You resisted the urge to check your phone for ten whole minutes? Behold, another feather in your metaphorical tail! The more your metaphorical feathers accumulate, the higher your confidence struts its stuff.

Finally, embrace the power of habit. Pursuing goals can sometimes deplete your mental resistance, especially if you’re relying solely on willpower. Instead, develop work habits that ensure your actions become routine and you won’t have to agonise over them every time. You can start with simple stuff like reading a page every day or even meditating for 5 minutes. The key to building habits that’ll serve you long-term is to start with seemingly simple practices and piggyback on them gradually. You can get an accountability partner to aid you in staying on track.

Electric Vehicles: Eco-friendly and Fringe Benefit Tax free

Inclusions and exclusions The exemption is only applicable to EVs priced purchased with a novated lease under $84,916 and does not extend to vehicles that are not considered to be a ‘car’ under the current FBT legislation – these are vehicles that are designed to carry one tonne or more, or nine passengers or more. Buying a car with a novated lease Instead of buying a car outright, a novated lease allows you to finance your vehicle and pay for it with a combination of your pre-tax and post-tax salary. As you now know, you also don’t need to pay any fringe benefit tax on it either.

SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls

It’s been a year since the federal government introduced the new legislation that makes eligible electric vehicles (EVs), bought with a novated lease, exempt from fringe benefits tax (FBT). The change has inspired a rise in EV sales, which have skyrocketed since. This is fantastic news for anyone looking to buy an EV. In fact, given the benefits to the environment, and the significant savings you’ll make on the purchase, more and more people may trade their current vehicle in for an EV. So we’ve compiled all the info you need on the benefits of the EV tax exemption, what it means for the environment, and how much a potential EV buyer is likely to save. New cars on the block Sales of fully electric vehicles (EVs) have more than tripled in Australia across the first nine months of 2023. Current sales data shows that 65,743 EVs have been registered between January 1 and September 30. This means that sales of EVs are up an incredible 202%. WhichCar? Reports that the Australian new-car market has crested a million sales so far this year and 71,800 of those are EVs. Among the top EV models are Tesla, BMW, Volvo and Hyundai, although MG and VW sales are starting to pick up rapidly. Are EV’s really better for the environment? There have been many studies, and subsequent debates around the eco-

friendliness of electric vehicles. A recent, and trusted study done by the University of Technology in Sydney found that electric vehicles do in fact emit, on average, 2941% fewer emissions than regular fossilfuelled cars for every kilometre driven. Further studies reveal that EVs are more sustainable when driven over longer distances, which is perfect for Australians, who enjoy exploring the country come holiday season. Beyond Zero Emissions reports that ‘A shift to EVs for urban travel would eliminate 6% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. 8% if regional car travel is included. This would make a major dent in Australia’s emissions – while delivering a range of benefits to individuals.’ Saving in more ways than one Apart from saving on fuel costs, electric vehicles will also cost less in the long run because they have lower running costs and fewer mechanical parts. That’s not to mention the tax savings when you purchase an EV with a novated lease. Before the exemption, salary packaging your vehicle payments meant paying fringe benefit tax as well. Now, the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption allows salaried employees to take out a novated lease and pay for their EVs from their pre-tax income without having to pay FBT, which dramatically reduces the cost of the car itself, and levels out the daily running costs. In fact, treasurer Jim Chalmers announced that it could save you up to $4700 a year on a $50,000 EV or 40% off of the cost price.

A novated lease is also cheaper because you use your pre-tax salary to cover the running costs of your car including everything from the maintenance and fuel and servicing, to your vehicle registration and insurance. A world of benefits with salary packaging The fringe benefit tax exemption on electric vehicles purchased with a novated lease speaks volumes about the government’s commitment to sustainability. It’s no surprise that Australians who share that drive towards a more eco-friendly way of living are flocking to buy EV’s. The savings made on the purchase of an EV through salary packaging are just one of the many benefits. Countless Australians are reaping the rewards of salary packaging by paying for their expenses using their pre-tax salaries. Whether you’re looking to buy an EV with a novated lease or are considering salary packaging your expenses, CBB The Salary Packaging People have helped hardworking people make the most out of every dollar they earn for over 30 years. We’ve made it our mission to ensure that employees can maximise their pre-tax salary, so they can afford the necessities and luxuries of life. Targeting your ideal client BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins

Every business needs 5 key elements: 1. Feet through the door/ Bums on seats 2. Increased Sales 3. Increased Profit 4. Raised Brand Awareness 5. Reduced Costs Not all products or services appeal to everyone. Although sometimes they perhaps should. For instance, everyone of working age should have a Will and a Power Of Attorney. Try telling that to an 18year old. They are completely invincible. An advert will not get them to change their mind. This then forces our entrepreneurial skills into overdrive. They are decidedly not the ideal market for this product. Identify the right market for your products. Most business have an “ideal client” that they should be directing their marketing through. The 80/ 20 rule, or the Pareto Principle, asserts that 80% of outcomes result from 20% effort in almost all businesses This 20% needs to be very clearly directed to maintain your position in the market. The other 80% will then be all the icing on the cake to raise your profile to a wider market in brand awareness, product selection and profitable sales. This in turn will grow the core business as they become part of the ever growing 80%. Knowing how to identify that core client is crucial to success. These clients will then be the best marketers as they proport the virtues of the products they have bought and the business they bought it from. Identifying how to find these customers to target the marketing accurately is to understand their needs. Core clients are those for whom the business solves a problem with the goods or services

Targeting customers needs will automatically draw them to your store or website as you address their needs. Simon Sinek says

provided. There are two key aspects to core clients, Physical needs and Emotional needs. The physical needs include: • Demographics • culture • religion • education • age • gender Emotional needs include: • Time poor • convenience • support • service We live in a WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) society. Customers are only interested in themselves. How can they get what they want, at the best price, when they want it, at the quality standard they expect for their needs. In your research considering the target market the specific product range and assortment will also influence the logistics, display, marketing and advertising. PHYSICAL: Where are they situated? Can they get to the products they want quickly, or can they have it delivered to them? Where do they do their research into specific products? Ensure you are front and centre. What level of education do they have? How technical can your marketing be? Are there any limitation on the goods due to Cultural or Religious considerations? What age group is most prevalent? Are they gender orientated? Are they age specific? These are relatively easy to determine. EMOTIONAL: The emotive needs today have a high impact on the final purchase. Are the goods easy to find online and instore? We live in an instant society. Can the customers walk into your store and find what they want straight away? Do you

Which one gives you the greatest Win? If you manipulate people into buying what they don’t there is a fair chance they will not come back, they will not give you a good review and they want even give you a second change. If you Inspire people to want the products you are selling it will make their life better, make them feel more confidant and want to come back to you next time. Look at who needs your products, now and into the future and Target specifically. It is true your products can go across several groups. When you do your marketing aim at one group at a time. Be specific to that groups needs. If you are selling the life insurance as in the example above. The needs of a 25 year old single is very different to a 45 year old with 4 kids, and different again to a 65 year old retiree. Each of these groups of people need life insurance but the way you speak to them needs to satisfy their needs. In a children’s wear store The needs of a grandparent are different to a parent. Sell to their needs.

Business Phone Systems customers. Today, we start with a key technology, a top tier phone system helps your business communicate with customers. VoIP

Microsoft Teams IT CONSULTANT By Justin Middleton

A good phone system can enable a business by meeting the evergrowing demands of its customers and employees. Since the pandemic in 2020, it has been increasingly clear that having a flexible workforce that can pick up and work from any location can be the difference between your business surviving and thriving. Over the coming months, I will write about components enabling your business flexibility and being able to meet and surpass your employees’ technology needs while delivering more to your

VoIP stands for Voice of Internet Protocol; in simple terms it means a phone system that uses an internet connection rather than a dedicated phone line. Most phone lines, especially if you have moved to the NBN, use VoIP technology. With VoIP it is easy to have a phone system with increased functionality over traditional business phone systems, while reducing costs and simplifying administrative overhead. What Features do a VoIP Business Phone System offer? Business Phone Systems have evolved beyond a menu function that connects to specific targets or takes messages. A good VoIP phone system, available anywhere there is internet connection, provides an extensive range of features: 1.

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Schedule phone hours and multiple call-flow scenarios (business hours, after hours). Host online meetings and webinars. Message internally with colleagues or stakeholders. Share files, track tasks, and collaborate. Diversion of calls during long wait times. Calling multiple phone lines at once.

7.

Calendar integration to know when not to call employees. 8. Recognition of business hours to automatically divert calls, improving employee wellbeing. 9. Emailing voicemail messages. 10. Using computers, mobile phones, and physical handsets to handle calls. 11. Improve call quality with background noise suppression. 12. Using AI to take notes, key points, create tasks, next steps, and more. The list goes on for what a good business phone system can do to enable your business. Microsoft Teams There are many different VoIP business phone systems are out there, but one of the most popular, and for good reason, is Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is a product line that is built to augment the Microsoft Office suite, you’ll probably be familiar with mainstays like Word, Excel, and Outlook. Microsoft Teams is a top tier business phone system with close integration with the Microsoft ecosystem. Teams is a cost-effective way to enable your business, especially if you’re already using the Microsoft Office suite, with monthly operational costs generally being lower than traditional business phone systems.

painting wooden surfaces PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof

There are many wood surfaces inside a building that need painting. Skirting boards, dados, architraves, window frames picture rails, feature timber walls and furniture – all require different painting technique to plaster walls. Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving a smooth, painted finish. 1. Cover work surface Spread plastic sheeting on the floor around the to-be-painted area so it doesn’t get splashed on. Laying newspaper or canvas on top of the plastic will stop you slipping on the plastic beneath and also soaks up paint spills. 2. Prepare wooden surface Don rubber gloves and goggles or glasses to protect your hands and eyes. Mix a solution of water and TSP, sugar soap or borax according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip a cloth in the solution, squeeze dry and wipe all surfaces to be painted. Rinse with another cloth dipped in clear, warm water. Let the timber dry completely. Now check for any holes, gouges, nicks or scratches. Fill them in with wood filler using a flexible putty knife.

3. Sand the surface Don a dust mask or respirator and hearing protection. Sand the timber flat areas with a random orbital sander and 200–280 grit sandpaper. This helps the wooden surface to bond with the paint. Sanding by hand is better for uneven surfaces such as you find on furniture. 4. Clean off dust Using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, remove the dust and wipe with a damp cloth. 5. Prime wooden surface Mix your primer well and apply with a brush or roller. When it has dried, check to see if the primer is transparent or streaky; if so, apply the primer a second time. A roller will prime a flat surface more quickly and leave it with a smoother finish. 6. Sand again Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand down the dry surface again. Apply light pressure so that gouges don’t form.

roll the paint up and down the slope of the tray a few times to distribute the paint evenly onto the roller. Roll the paint lightly onto the wooden surface. A high-density foam roller gives better coverage with thinner latex paint than with oil-based paints. Paintbrushes are better for fiddlier jobs like window frames and furniture. Insert the bristles of the brush into the paint can just a third of their length each time you need more paint. Once on the wooden surface, stroke the brush in a parallel direction to the wood grain. Use short strokes. Keep a wet edge at all times so that you don’t leave overlapping marks. For a more professional appearance, you could try spraying the surface rather than using a paint brush. Do not be tempted to apply a second coat of paint after this coat has dried, as this will cause the paint to tear. 9. Sand the first coat The way to achieve a smoother finish is to sand and paint one more time. When the first coat has dried, sand as before. This will flatten any bumps or inconsistencies introduced by the roller or paintbrush. Gently sand by hand with 220-grit sandpaper. If using an orbital sander, attach the sandpaper and run it as lightly as possible over the surface. Do not apply any other weight except that of the sander itself. After sanding, bunch up a cloth. Keeping it loose, run it lightly over the surface. If you apply too much pressure, the cloth‘s surface may embed itself onto the wood. 10. Apply a second coat of paint Apply a second coat with the roller or brush, and let dry, preferably overnight. Paint is more durable the longer it is left to dry. For more painting advice on painting in winter, contact Dahllof Painting Services at sjd67@bigpond.net.au. We will be happy to answer all your inquiries.

7. Clean again Use a vacuum cleaner and cloth as before to wipe away the dust. 8. Paint the surface Foam-density rollers are useful for painting large surfaces. Insert a paint tray liner into the paint tray, then pour in paint so that it fills the tray less than halfway. Gently dab the roller into the paint and

Unemployment to stay low despite drop in job vacancies

Unemployment remains stubbornly low amid a gradual cooling in the jobs market, but the resilience of the Australian economy is being tested by a global slowdown. Job vacancies dropped 0.7 per cent to 389,000 in the three months to November 2023, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday. But the figure still remained 71 per cent higher than in February 2020 – the last month before COVID-19 disruptions sent the labour market into freefall. ABS head of labour statistics David Taylor said it was the sixth straight quarterly drop in job vacancies, which have now fallen by around 18 per cent from the peak in May 2022. “However, this quarter saw a relatively small decline, compared with the eight per cent fall in August,” he said. The biggest drops were in real estate and education, while the only two industries where job vacancies rose were mining and public administration and safety. The number of unemployed people to job vacancies rose to 1.5 per cent in November, still well below the pre-COVID figure of 3.1 per cent.

This suggests the labour market remains relatively tight, Mr Taylor said. Given recent trends in job advertising, NAB head of market economics Tapas Strickland had been expecting a more substantial decline in job vacancies. “Importantly, there is nothing in today’s data to suggest the unemployment rate will rise dramatically in the near-term,” he said in a note. The latest labour market figures coincided with the release of monthly inflation data for November, which showed a larger than expected cooling in consumer prices. The continued decline in job vacancies will add to the narrative that the Reserve Bank’s 13 successive interest rates have had their intended effect, with AMP chief economist Shane Oliver predicting the RBA to begin cutting the cash rate in June. “With job vacancies, job ads, and the ratio of job vacancies to unemployment ratio now all deteriorating, the jobs market is clearly cooling which will take pressure off wages growth, which in turn will add to the fall in inflation,” Mr Oliver said.

The labour market’s ongoing resilience comes as the World Bank warned that high energy prices, and conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East would cause the global economy to experience its slowest growth in 30 years for the first half of the 2020s. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the international monetary body’s dire forecast was a stark reminder that Australia could not afford to be complacent about the conditions confronting its economy. “Our job in Australia is to make this not a lost decade but a defining decade to modernise our economy and maximise our advantages,” he told ABC Radio on Wednesday. But the government’s plans to supercharge the renewable minerals sector were dealt a blow on Tuesday when US alumina giant Alcoa announced it will shut the ageing Kwinana refinery in Perth. About 1000 jobs are likely to be slashed as a result of the closure. Jacob Shteyman (Australian Associated Press)

Setting Realistic Goals for a Great Year

NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger

As we find ourselves in 2024, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past and look ahead to a fresh start. One of the most meaningful gifts you can give yourself is the commitment to a healthier and more fulfilling life. Along with the common goal of weight loss, think about embracing a lifestyle that nurtures your well-being. So, let’s embark on this journey together, with a positive mindset. Define Your Why

Break down larger objectives into smaller, manageable steps. This not only makes your journey less overwhelming but also allows you to celebrate small victories along the way. Remember, progress, no matter how small, is still progress. Focus on Holistic Wellness Consider setting goals that encompass various aspects of your well-being. This includes physical, mental, and emotional health. Incorporate activities that bring you joy, whether it’s practicing mindfulness, spending time in nature, or engaging in activities that fuel your passions.

Understanding the reasons behind your health goals is essential for long-term success. Ask yourself why these goals matter to you. It could be improving your energy levels, reducing stress, longevity, or simply feeling more confident in your own skin. Your “why” will be your anchor during challenging times, reminding you of the greater purpose behind your journey.

Create a Support System

Set Realistic and Sustainable Goals

Weight loss

While aiming high is commendable, it’s crucial to set goals that are both achievable and sustainable.

Losing weight is a common goal, but maybe you feel like you’ve tried that before and failed. I’m not convinced

You don’t have to go on this journey alone. Share your health goals with friends, family, or join a community with similar aspirations. Having a support system not only provides encouragement but also accountability. Surround yourself with positivity and individuals who uplift and inspire you.

that’s the case, I think that so many weight loss diets have failed you. They give great results for a few weeks, then you plateau, and find yourself hungry, so you stop. What if there was a way where food was really satisfying along the way? I’m not promising rainbows and unicorns here, there will be some temptations you will have to say no to, but it will be sustainable long term. As you step into the New Year, remember that your health journey is a personal and evolving adventure. Embrace it with the belief that you are capable of positive change. Here’s to a healthier and happier you in the coming year! This advice is general in nature and not intended to be prescriptive. Supermarkets told to pass on savings at the checkout

Shoppers were frustrated but had nowhere else to go, consumer spending expert Graeme Hughes said. “Consumers have little power to vote with their feet due to the lack of competition,” he said. Nationals Leader David Littleproud wants the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to launch an inquiry into the prices of everyday goods at supermarkets. “If Labor had initiated the investigation, then the ACCC would have given the government solutions before Christmas for so many Australians doing it tough,” he told AAP. A Senate inquiry has already been set up but hearings won’t begin until February. “It makes more sense to have the professionals with the expertise and tools to investigate supermarkets, rather than a bunch of politicians,” Mr Littleproud contended. Coles has defended its prices, saying they’re set by the market and also depend on seasonal conditions as well as supply and demand. Woolworths said it was always working to strike the right balance to ensure access to high quality produce and giving suppliers a fair market price. But Opposition Leader Peter Dutton attacked the government for promising Australians they would be better off under Labor. Labor campaigned on the increasing price of everyday items under the coalition outside – and inside – grocery stores during the 2022 federal election.

Supermarkets have been put on notice to pass on savings when meat and food prices drop. When wholesale prices go down, the cost of items at the checkout should drop as well, Treasurer Jim Chalmers says. The government is reviewing competition laws to help people doing it tough “in the aisles of our supermarkets right around Australia”. “We are concerned that when the price for meat and fruit and vegetables at the farm gate goes down, we want to see

the price of those goods go down on the supermarket shelves as well,” he told reporters in Brisbane on Monday.

“The cost of food is up under this government, the cost of gas, the cost of electricity and every other item under the budget at the moment is putting pressure on families,” Mr Dutton said.

“The prime minister is out there saying that he’s now asking the Treasury and finance (department) to come up with “If the supermarkets are buying it cheaper, ideas about how they can address they should be selling it cheaper, too.” people’s cost of living pressures – that’s what he promised to do before the The treasurer is in contact with the election.” consumer watchdog, which monitors prices across the economy and is set to The government is focusing on taming speak with the ACCC again this week. inflation and boosting wages to make “This is a fairly regular topic of conversation, how we make sure that we’ve got the monitoring arrangements right,” Dr Chalmers said.

Councillor Peter Murrihy, Brownbill Ward “The Draft Mercer, Gheringhap and Bayley Streetscape Masterplan considers pedestrian improvements, greening intersection upgrades, seating, art, cycling and accessibility. Key themes from our previous engagement included a desire for footpath improvements, more trees and landscaping, better street lighting, extra bins, more outdoor dining, additional public seating and more historical information.

Community input sought for Mercer, Gheringhap and Bayley streets We’re encouraging residents, city workers, commuters and visitors to central Geelong to drop into our inperson engagement sessions about the Draft Mercer, Gheringhap and Bayley Streetscape Masterplan. The City’s Engagement team is taking feedback next Tuesday 16 January between 10am-12pm and 4.30pm-6pm at our Wurriki Nyal civic precinct (137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong). Register your attendance at the Mercer, Gheringhap and Bayley Streetscape Masterplan information page. You can also have your say via our online survey, which closes at 5pm on Tuesday 23 January. The draft masterplan aims to progressively make the entire length of Mercer, Gheringhap and Bayley streets more inviting, accessible and green with support from the Victorian Government and developers. The draft plan puts forward a significant increase in community areas, gardens,

parks, tree planting and safety measures, such as: • •

• • • • •

New and improved outdoor dining areas; 620 trees – a 400 per cent increase and 15 per cent increase in canopy cover; 20,800sqm of fully accessible public area such as footpaths, pram ramps and parking; 7,400sqm of additional footpaths – a 36 per cent increase; Recognition of First Nations culture and heritage; 260 new seats, bins, drinking fountains and other street furniture; Opportunities for public art; and Changes to road layout and onstreet parking.

During consultation over 2021-22, community members suggested Gheringhap and Mercer streets could look more like Malop Street in the future and Bayley Street could resemble Little Malop Street.

We want to progressively improve these streets, so that they are more appealing and user-friendly for all users.” Councillor Eddy Kontelj, Brownbill Ward “I’m keeping an open mind on the various proposals.” “Feedback in this round is a vital part of planning and will help Council make decisions that meet the needs of the community. We need to hear from the broader Geelong community, central Geelong residents, city workers, commuters and visitors on how Gheringhap, Mercer, and Bayley streets can be welcoming and suitable for our community, whilst also supporting small business. It is so important that the community provide open and honest feedback, because these potential changes will have a significant impact on the future look and functionality of this area of Geelong. The City will analyse and take into account all the responses as the master plan is finalised. Hit the ‘Follow’ button at the top left of the Have Your Say page to stay updated on the progress of this important project.” Community consultation is also underway online for the draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan. The final plan will guide the regeneration and redevelopment of the city block bound by Malop, Moorabool, Ryrie and Yarra streets. JANUARY 2024 | FIND GEELONG

Drop in and have your say on the Draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan

Cr Peter Murrihy with Jenny, Erin and Felicity from the City’s Engagement team.

As Greater Geelong’s population swells over the holidays, the City is encouraging residents and visitors to help shape the future of central Geelong’s Market Square Quarter. Our Engagement team will be taking feedback in person on our draft masterplan for the city block bound by Malop, Yarra, Ryrie and Moorabool streets from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on Tuesday 9 January and 12:00pm to 2:00pm on Tuesday 6 February 2024. Community members can drop in at 111113 Little Malop Street, Geelong to read about the vision, ask questions and have their say. There’s no need to register. Our online survey remains open until Thursday 11 February 2024 on the Draft Mercer and Gheringhap Streetscape Masterplan have your say page. The draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan seeks to guide development and progressively revamp the city block by turning it into the thriving heart of Geelong, with Little Malop Central becoming a more welcoming, accessible, vibrant and safe meeting place. It proposes a pedestrian ‘Eat-Street’ with outdoor dining that extends Union Street

through the site, an outdoor market and two new plazas designed in collaboration with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners. The vision was informed by engagement with community members who called for more dining opportunities, a fresh food market or a supermarket, more public art, live music and events, diverse shopping opportunities and the creation of external shopping experience or high street. As the land is owned by private landholders and government, the final plan will require partnerships between landowners, developers, local and state government, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the broader Geelong community to be fully realised. Feedback from this round of consultation will inform the final masterplan, before going to Council for endorsement in 2024. This draft masterplan forms part of Council’s continued efforts to reinvigorate central Geelong and support local businesses through grants, activations and activities such as live music, Geelong Major Events, our free Business Concierge and investment services and other masterplans. Consultation for the Draft Mercer and Gheringhap Streetscape Masterplan is underway until Sunday 11 February 2024.

Mayor Trent Sullivan “With people visiting the Waterfront, dining outlets and our cultural venues, we’d love for residents and visitors to stop by our engagement and share their insights on how this significant location can be reshaped. There is so much potential to unlock in this city block that will contribute to a more cohesive, lively and inclusive space.” Councillor Peter Murrihy “The draft masterplan won’t require any changes to the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme. The preferred ‘Malop Heart’ option has been assessed against the requirements of the Central Geelong Framework Plan and the Planning Scheme and has been found to be the most economically viable option. The masterplan will be used to secure funding for key actions identified in the plan and to guide future public realm projects in the quarter.”

Wet wipes cause significant issues at Waterfront facilities Community members heading to Geelong’s Waterfront as the weather warms up this weekend are urged to dispose of wet wipes correctly when using toilet facilities.

This includes extra portable toilets, more dedicated cleaners, additional contracted waste collections and increased Community Safety and Regulation patrols.

David Greaves - Executive Director City Infrastructure “We ask that community members respect the facilities along our Waterfront and do the right thing.

The toilets at Cunningham Pier were also clogged during this time.

Wipes, even the ones labelled as flushable, and items like nappies, cotton buds and sanitary items should always be disposed of in the bin.

For more information on what can’t be flushed down toilets, please visit the Barwon Water website.

Unfortunately, these products are made from materials that don’t disintegrate when exposed to water.

Up to 10,000 people a day are expected to descend on the Eastern Beach area over peak periods in January 2024.

By using the bins provided for items that can’t be flushed, there is less chance of blockages and our facilities are cleaner and safer.

The City has put on additional resources to ensure this visitor attraction is well maintained, safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Community members can report a blockage or other waste issues online now or call the City’s customer service line on 03 5272 5272.”

Changing lives through

Cottage by the Sea’s Take a Break program

The first glimpse we have of Rose, a teacher from Western English Language School (WELS), is on Cottage by the Sea’s outdoor climbing net with the kids – they had asked her to join them. “We want to support the kids – from a distance – to build their confidence,” she explains. ‘’We call it ‘scaffolding’.” Rose has been teaching at WELS for more than 20 years and has stayed at Cottage by the Sea on multiple occasions for Take a Break programs. “It’s a great place to visit,” she says. The children on this week’s Take a Break program have all recently arrived to Australia from more than 15 countries, including Samoa, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Argentina, Afghanistan, Chile, Pakistan, Iraq and many more. Their life experiences across these different cultures are varied. But what they have in common is their resilience, gratitude for the small things in life and a collective sense of joy. “They appreciate what they’ve been given – all the things we can take for granted,” Rose explains.

Their focus this week is on making new friends and learning things along the way. For all the students, English is their second or third language which can make communicating with each other and staff challenging, but this is all part of the learning process and makes for great problem-solving and bonding. Camp Leader Tori noticed that throughout the week, even if the kids couldn’t understand what each other was saying, they were still smiling and laughing with each other. “They were just all happy,” she explains.

Harnessing the benefits of Take a Break Increased confidence is one of the many benefits the participants can experience as a result of working through challenges on the Take a Break program. Rose explains that this is one of the most notable benefits she witnesses. “This place just gives them that confidence,” she shares, adding that she has also observed their increased willingness to try new things, including new foods. Independent impact studies have shown that Cottage by the Sea programs leave a lasting impact on children, from increasing their confidence and self-belief to enhancing their sense of belonging. You can find more information about this research with Deakin University here.

New experiences by the sea As the name suggests, the beach is on our doorstep at Cottage by the Sea. The majority of this week’s visiting children have never been to the beach before, let alone swam in the sea. You can’t help but smile at the excitement on their faces in experiencing the ocean for the first time. “Seeing their joy is priceless,” says Rose. Feeling the sand on their skin was a whole new experience in itself. As they were building sandcastles, one of the boys starting yelling, “Shark! Shark! It’s a shark! I see a shark!” and made a shark fin with his hand on his head. The whole group looked on to try and spot this “shark” in the water, and then one fin popped up, then another, then a few more. One of the girls shouted, “No, not a shark – it’s dolphins!” She was right – there was a pod of dolphins cruising past about 10 metres from the shore. The group watched in awe as the pod of dolphins put on a show. Seeing dolphins during their first time at the beach is an experience that will stay with the children long after they return home. Rose explains how their experiences at Cottage leave a lasting impact. “Those memories do last – I know they do for them.” This group of children are from different school campuses, which has given them the opportunity to connect with children they otherwise wouldn’t have crossed paths with. “They’re making new friends with kids from different campuses,” explains Rose. “To all come from different schools and countries, it was great to see how they all gelled together. They all got along so well,” adds Tori. Many of the children on this program have also spent time with participants from their same culture, which has enhanced their sense of connection. Two boys from Samoa are based at different campuses, but being on this same program at Cottage has given them the opportunity to become friends. Despite some of their challenges at school, such as low confidence and reduced learning, they have found a greater sense of belonging by their shared commonality. “They’re having a ball together,” shares Rose. Another two children from the same township in Columbia have been great company for each other – the young boy has even been helping as a translator for the young girl, who hasn’t been in Australia for as long as him.

Building a Neighbourhood There are many benefits to buying a new home in a brand new, modern and stylish estate – tidy streets, community facilities, a chance to make your environment exactly what you want it to be. But to ensure the best lifestyle, it is important to turn that estate into a neighbourhood – a connected community. And at the heart of a neighbourhood are – neighbours. There has been a lot of research over the years, all which indicates that knowing your neighbours, at least recognising them, will enhance your feelings of safety, wellbeing and mental health. Knowing your neighbours can also help you to recognise when there are people in your neighbourhood that perhaps don’t belong, bringing your attention to suspicious behaviour that you can report to authorities. Knowing your neighbours doesn’t mean that you have to ‘live in each other’s’ pockets’. If a strong friendship forms, fantastic. But it may just be that you look for the opportunity to catch their eye, and you don’t hesitate to ask and offer help. At any time, it is vital to be in touch with the people around you. So – what are some of the things you can do know that will connect you to your neighbours and enhance the spirit of the neighbourhood during these challenging times?

1. Say “hi” and wave. When you’re out and about, give your neighbours a wave and a smile and say “hi”. If it’s a nice day, sit outside in your front yard with a cuppa and wave and say “hello” as your neighbours go by. A small interaction can really brighten someone’s day. 2. Offer to help with their gardening. Bit of a green thumb, or just want another reason to get out of your house? You could offer to mow your neighbour’s lawn or nature strip while you’re doing your own. You could also help with weeding or trimming back shrubs, trees and lawn edges, especially around windows and entry ways. 3. Brighten their day with a homemade surprise.

If you have neighbours who are elderly, live alone, have disabilities or are immunocompromised, offer to call them every few days to make sure they are doing okay. If they don’t have friends or family, they may appreciate the chance to chat with someone. However, always check to see what their preferred way to communicate is - phone call, text message, notes in the mailbox, email or something else. And don’t be offended if they turn down your offer - they may already have someone looking out for them. 6. Organise a driveway happy hour. Grab a chair, your beverage of choice, your sandwich or even your barbecue and sit in your front yard or driveway. Encourage your neighbours to do the same and chat to each other at a safe social distance. If you’re musicallyinclined you could add instruments and singing to the mix and start your very own neighbourhood band. 7. Start a neighbourhood chat group. Start a chat group for your street or neighbourhood on WhatsApp or Messenger. Residents can post requests for assistance or make offers to help. It’s also a great “no contact” way to check in with your neighbours and make sure they’re doing okay. However you do it, make connecting with your neighbours a priority for a happier lifestyle and enhanced wellbeing.

It could be a bouquet of flowers or a potted cutting from your garden, some home grown veggies or fruit, a jar of homemade preserves, a plate of homebaked treats or perhaps some fresh eggs, if you have chooks. Maybe when you’re cooking your own meal, make an extra serve for your neighbour and drop it around. Leave the goodies on their door step with a note. You will definitely put a smile on their face. LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

BOWLS

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation. You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

GOLF

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club. Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

RACQUET

FC LEOPOLD FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop. The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop. We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town. FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions. FC Leopold are looking for enthusiastic members of the community who would like to contribute to the clubs ethos and family friendly feel - whether that is through being a committee member, volunteer, coach or player. AFLW Stats Wrap| Midfield We dig deep into the stats sheet to review the AFLW season

By Jake Langenegger Now that the season is done and won, it’s time to take a look at the fantastic year the Cats had in the AFLW. There were big wins, close finishes and heartbreaking losses, but the trajectory is clearly trending in an upwards direction. There were some key statistical metrics blowing previous seasons out of the water. This is the second in a three part series were we take a closer look at the at the stats of the season, and it’s easy to see why Geelong had the season they did. PART ONE AFLW Stats Wrap - Defence Transition In the middle it all started with Erin Hoare. The former Cat and #1 (re)Draft Pick played a pivotal hand, literally, in giving best use of the ball out of the middle. Hoare recorded 77 Hitouts to Advantage taking her to 4th in the competition and had a total of 250 hitouts seeing her finish 6th overall. Her ability to give the midfield best use was the key to what would become a formidably powerful engine room and key to the Cats’ 2023 success.

Georgie Prespakis (315), Nina Morrison (298) and Amy McDonald (295) finished 6th, 7th and 9th in disposals respectively making it three representatives from Geelong in the top 10. Prespakis had a dominant season, ranking 1st for Total Clearances (86, 1st in Stoppage Clearances with 64), 2nd for Contested possessions and 4th (117) for Ground Ball Gets in the comp. Morrison in those same categories ranked 10th (63), 10th (146) and 5th (113) whilst McDonald finished 2nd (75), 4th (164) and 6th (112).

Livewire small forwards Renee Garing and Kate Surman both recorded 22 tackles inside 50, seeing them finish equal 8th in the comp. Garing amassed a total of 69 tackles seeing her inside the top 30 in the comp in her final season.

Also reaching new heights was young Cat, Darcy Moloney, who in a career best season broke her season disposal record, going from 109 last year to 185 this year. Along with almost double her previous best season tackle record with 64 for the year. Pressure Pressure was a key component of Geelong’s attacking forays in 2023, with a number of Cats ranking high in the pressure categories. Nina Morrison led the way in pressure acts with 287, placing her 3rd in the comp, with Georgie Prespakis, (258, 5th) not far off. Nina’s 127 pressure acts in the defensive half saw her ranked 6th in the comp. Amy McDonald, 94 and Prespakis, 93 finished 6th and 7th respectively in total tackles. JANUARY 2024 | FIND GEELONG

Stewart Signs On | Four more years in the 44 Tom Stewart has committed to the Geelong Football Club until the end of 2027 the 2023 Geelong Cats AFL Carter Family Community Champion, Stewart was also a 2023 Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award nominee. An exemplary leader, Stewart has been a key figure in many Cats Community programs, which includes working closely with the Good Friday Appeal.

Tom Stewart is set to be Cat for life after committing to the Geelong Football Club until the end of 2027, signing a three-year contract extension.

The defender has been a key supporter in the Cats Wishes, supporting a My Room Children’s Cancer Charity auction, donating his 2022 Grand Final matchworn guernsey, and supporting the ‘2 feet and a heartbeat’ walk for Heart Kids, alongside wife Emma.

Drafted to the Cats as a mature-aged selection, the Premiership defender has stamped himself as one of Geelong’s finest modern-day players. A two-time Carji Greeves Medal winner (2021, 2023), Stewart has been awarded five All-Australian blazers in just seven AFL seasons (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023) and has been the Club’s vice-captain since 2022.

Geelong Cats General Manager – Football Andrew Mackie said the Club is thrilled to have Stewart commit long term. “Tom’s resume is a credit to his commitment, his consistency, and his professionalism in his relentless pursuit of excellence since his very first year in the Hoops.

“I am humbled and grateful to the Geelong Football Club for the opportunity to pull on the Hoops week in, week out,” Stewart said.

“In recent years he’s demonstrated his capacity to unlock the same drive and standards amongst his teammates and has extended his positive influence beyond the football field and into our community.

“Ever since I walked into the Club, everyone has been so supportive of me, and I can’t thank the playing group, coaching staff and wider organisation enough for all the time and effort they have not just put into my journey, but to everyone lucky enough to pull on the Hoops. “The future at the Cats is so bright and to be able to be on that journey with so many exciting young players and experienced heads is something I am really looking forward to and we all can’t wait to crack into 2024 and continue to give our all for this footy club.” One of the League’s premier defenders, the evolution of Tom Stewart has been remarkable. Drafted from Geelong VFL / South Barwon Football Club in the 2016 National Draft with pick 40, Stewart has made an instant impact since walking through the doors at GMHBA Stadium.

“We are excited to have Tom playing in the Hoops until at least the end of 2027.” Debuting in the opening round of the 2017 season, Stewart quickly established himself as one of the best intercept marking and rebounding defenders in the competition. Consistent, courageous and durable, Stewart has played at least 18 games every season since being drafted and across his career ranks elite for his position in meters gained, marks and disposals. Stewart’s outstanding commitment to the Hoops extends beyond the field, with the defender’s commitment to the community unrivalled. Recognised as

KERR RUPTURES ACL IN MASSIVE BLOW FOR MATILDAS’ PARIS 2024 CHANCES Sam Kerr has suffered a ruptured ACL and is set to miss the Matildas’ Paris 2024 Olympics campaign. Kerr, 30, copped the blow while on a mid-season training camp with Chelsea. She’s already been ruled out of the rest of Chelsea’s season and Australia’s Olympic qualifiers against Uzbekistan in February. But with the Olympics taking place across July and August this year, Kerr would require a stunning recovery to have any chance to feature in Paris.

Stay up to date with all the latest news from SEN. Sign up HERE. “Considering how hard Sam has worked over the past six months to return to play, this news is a devastating blow for everyone,” Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson said in a statement.

“Our focus now is on ensuring she has all the support she wants and needs to navigate recovery and rehab.” It comes after a difficult year injury-wise for Kerr, who missed the early stages of the FIFA Women’s World Cup with a left calf strain. She was later revealed to have also strained her right calf in Australia’s bronze medal match loss to Sweden.

“With her ability to lead by example, Sam’s guidance and influence on the team is significant and, as a result, this will be an incredible loss for the national team.

On the waterfront of Corio Bay Geelong, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club is one of Australia’s most successful yacht clubs. The Royal Geelong Yacht Club welcomes sailing and social patrons alike. The clubrooms offer a cafe and a fully licensed bar. The Royal Geelong Yacht Club prides itself on being a family club, with generations of families have contributed to the rich culture that the organization now enjoys. Following the huge success of the “Geelong Regatta” now known as the “Festival of Sails”, which was first held on Corio Bay in 1844, the enthusiastic organizing committee unanimously voted for the formation of the Geelong Yacht Club in 1859. On the 27th of March 1924, the Club was granted a Royal Warrant and became the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. From these humble beginnings, the club has grown to be the home to the best sailing experience you can have, with over 1200 Members ranging in age from 5 to 90. Being an innovative club, strategic to introducing sailing to the community and strengthening the membership base is always uppermost in planning the way ahead. The Royal Geelong Yacht Club has made a major commitment to Discover Salling and continues to develop youth involvement.

Geelong waterfront

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards. This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards. There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

poppy kettle playground

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer. The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net. The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. geelong arts and cultural precinct Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions, and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong. The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars. The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

western Beach People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s.

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away. Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront. Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

Ripplesside park

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve. Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past enroute to more popular areas. The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground. The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy! Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water. Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views. Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.
