About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch
The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.
We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

Christmas Day and Holidays The Magic of Christmas Day and the Joy of Holiday Celebrations The Christmas season is a time of joy, togetherness, and reflection for people around the world. At the heart of it all is Christmas Day, a holiday that holds a special place in the hearts of many. While Christmas is perhaps the most widely celebrated, it’s just one of several holidays that make up the festive holiday season. Christmas Day: Celebrating the Birth of Jesus Christmas Day, celebrated on December 25th, is a significant Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a time when Christians come together to reflect on the story of the Nativity, the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, as recounted in the Bible. This day holds deep religious meaning for Christians and is often observed with church services, nativity scenes, and carol singing.
For many, Christmas is about much more than its religious origins. It’s a time of giving, love, and sharing. Families and friends come together to exchange gifts and express their affection for one another. The tradition of decorating Christmas trees with ornaments and lights, along with the anticipation of Santa Claus’s arrival, brings a sense of wonder and excitement, especially among children. Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas in some regions, is a beloved figure associated with Christmas. He is said to travel the world on Christmas Eve, delivering gifts to well-behaved children. The story of Santa Claus, with his iconic red suit and reindeer-drawn sleigh, adds a touch of enchantment to the holiday season. The holiday season is a time of reflection, gratitude, and the joy of spending quality time with loved ones. It’s a time
Infrastructure advisory body gets facelift after cuts Dominic Giannini (Australian Associated Press)
The peak independent body that advises on the nation’s largest infrastructure projects will be revamped. Reforms for Infrastructure Australia that passed the Senate on Tuesday mean the organisation will get the power to inquire into nationally significant infrastructure projects. Its functions have also been redefined and a new governance structure will be put in place. The coalition had allowed the independent body to lose its direction and be stacked with political board appointments, assistant minister Anthony Chisholm said. “They destroyed Infrastructure Australia as a major economic body and instead
used it as a vehicle to give jobs to their mates,” he told the Senate on Tuesday. “They ignored Infrastructure Australia’s priority list and instead invested in imaginary car parks rather than major projects that would lay the foundations for the nation’s future economic growth.” The minister said Infrastructure Australia would now provide “relevant and timely expert advice” to the government on infrastructure planning and project prioritisation. It will also remove duplicating work with the state and territories. The body will be governed by three commissioners appointed by the minister while the CEO will be appointed by the commissioners.
when cultures from around the world come together to celebrate the values of love, kindness, and generosity. No matter which holiday one observes during this special time of year, the message of unity and goodwill remains a constant, making the holiday season a truly magical and heartwarming time. Christmas Day is a central holiday in the holiday season, celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike. It’s a time of giving, sharing, and cherishing the presence of loved ones. However, it’s just one of many holidays that collectively make the holiday season a time of joy, celebration, and reflection. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other holiday, the spirit of togetherness and goodwill is what truly defines this festive time of year. By Mary Barnes
However, the bill failed to enhance the transparency of government decisions after the minister cut funding for dozens of projects, opposition infrastructure spokeswoman Bridget McKenzie said. “If you want to know why we bother having an infrastructure pipeline, it’s so that Australians have the road projects they need to get home swiftly and safely,” Senator McKenzie told the Senate. “That out in the regions we have a road network that allows us to get our fabulous product to ports and to capital cities to market around the world and that our truckies can travel on roads that are safe.” The amended legislation will need to be ticked off by the government-controlled lower house when it sits for the final time this year on Thursday. Infrastructure Minister Catherine King cut about $7 billion worth of commuter car parks, fast rail and other infrastructure projects, citing a $33 billion budget blowout. The cuts represented projects that were not realistically going to be delivered with the available funding or had made little to no progress over a significant amount of time, Ms King said.

Christmas is nearly here and Council’s Christmas program is now well underway following the official opening of the floating Christmas tree in November. This event signifies the beginning of what is one of the best times of the year for our region. Over a number of years now we have been working tirelessly to establish Geelong as the Christmas capital of Australia, and the team at the City continue to make improvements on the program with new offerings. It is a wonderful time of year and in 2023 there is once again something for everybody looking to partake in the spirit of Christmas. The projections on City Hall are always a big hit for families, as are our Letters to Santa, which offer kids the opportunity to send a message to the man in the big red suit in time before he makes his journey around the world on Christmas Eve. The Giant Selfie Trail, with more than 20 locations, is a fun way to explore the city on foot or by bike, there are competitions and the school Christmas Trees in Johnstone Park showcase the creative side of students around Greater Geelong. There are plenty of events for adults as well, and for those looking to take part in their own activities or to find something to do with friends, there are masterclasses, markets and special Piano Bar Christmas events. Those who like to get out and be active have also got lots of options during the upcoming festive period, with swimming, golf, yoga and surfing on offer with a special Christmas twist. Full details of the program are available at the Christmas in Geelong website. As Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong, I want to take this chance to acknowledge that it has been a challenging year for many Australians, and people in Geelong are no different. I hope that our program can bring some happiness to those who need it most this year, and I wish everybody a safe and merry Christmas.

Opportunity: Contributing to super can help reduce your capital gains tax while boosting your retirement savings
ACCOUNTANT
“15% tax instead of your marginal tax rate of up to 47%”
By Warren Strybosch
Have you sold an asset this year that created a significant capital gain, such as an investment property or a share portfolio? Are you wanting to increase your chances of a financially comfortable retirement by investing funds in the concessionally taxed super system? Making a personal contribution to superannuation may not only boost your retirement savings. You could also have the opportunity to claim some or all of your contribution as a tax deduction, allowing you to reduce your taxable income in the year of contribution. Concessional contributions Concessional contributions (commonly referred to as pre-tax contributions) are typically those contributions made by your employer, such as superannuation guarantee and salary sacrifice contributions and your own personal contributions where a tax deduction is claimed. By claiming a tax deduction for your super contributions, only 15% tax is payable on the contributions going into the super fund compared to your marginal tax rate of up to 47%. This could mean a tax saving of 32 cents in every dollar contributed.
For those on high incomes, where your total income and concessional contributions for the year exceed $250,000, an additional 15% tax may be payable on your tax deductible contributions (known as Division 293 tax). Even if this additional tax applies, 30% tax on contributions is still significantly less than the 47% top marginal tax rate. It’s also important to note that for those aged 67-75 if you wish to claim a tax deduction for your personal contributions, you will need to meet a
work test (or work test exemption) in the year of contribution. Cap on concessional (deductible) contributions There is a limit on the amount of concessional contributions that may be made in a financial year. This limit is currently $27,500 per annum. Plus, new rules came into play from 1 July 2018 where, any unused concessional contribution cap that accrues from 1 July 2018 may be carried forward for a period of up to 5 years. This measure only applies to those people with a total superannuation balance of less than $500,000.
Case Study Jon is 57 and recently sold an investment property which created a $100,000 capital gain. When added to his employment income, his assessable income for the year is $240,000. Jon has a total of $400,000 in superannuation, and his concessional contributions since 1 July 2018 are: Year

Step 2
As Joh has a concessional cap of $27,500 this year plus $32,500 unused cap from previous years, he can claim all of the $60,000 contribution as a tax deduction.
Step 3
That’s $60,000 taxed at 15% contributions tax compared to Jon’s marginal tax rate of 47% - a tax saving of $19,200.

How to Set Yourself Up for Success in 2024
Photo by Christina @ wocintechchat.com on Unsplash
LEADERSHIP & TEAM SPECIALIST By Sally Higoe
Although it is something everyone sets out to achieve, success is a concept with a different meaning for everyone. It could mean having a great career, a perfect family, or a dream home. There are a wide range of success variables, but they all have one thing in common; when they are achieved, you feel proud, fulfilled, and motivated to be better in the future. But how do you set yourself up for a journey towards success? Have The Right Mindset For obvious reasons, this one is crucial when gearing up. Your success all starts in your head. Asking the right questions is crucial for your definition of success and the foundation you lay for it. What do you want to achieve in 2024? What is the main objective at the moment? What are the actionable steps towards achieving your goal? The truth is, that many obstacles will fly right in your face when you are going after these goals. Without the right mindset, you will easily fall out of track. You know yourself best and how to be positive, even in the face of adversity.
Having the right mindset revolves around trusting yourself and getting rid of any self-deprecating thoughts. By identifying the challenges that you might encounter along the way, your mind is prepared to overcome them and keep moving forward. Decide on Your Strategies and Write Them Down Your imagination is the only limit to what you can achieve, and should guide your strategies. A bundle of healthy strategies leads to achieving goals. Writing down strategies is important because: • • • • •
It motivates you. You get a clearer image of what your success looks like in progressive steps. It helps you stay focused on the target. You can track your progress with time. You move each day with intent.
The simple rule for strategising to work is that the strategies should be smartly crafted, well-defined, achievable, and committed. Strategies should also be motivating enough to make you excited about working on them each day. To ensure the strategies are motivating, let them answer the question “Why is it important to achieving success”. Now, the next question that needs to be answered is the “HOW”. And that is by..
Getting the Right Tools for The Job One of the mental traps when setting out to be successful is to assume that you are capable of doing, and know everything. Most people do not know what they need to be successful, yet they still start off, hoping to learn from experiences. It is true though, that a lot of the things you will learn to help you achieve success will be learned from experiences along the journey. But many of the mistakes that would be made could have been avoided if you equipped yourself with everything you need at the very beginning. In every journey, there is a lot one doesn’t know, and even a lot more that the person is not even aware that they do not know. Taking time to prepare and learn before starting is important. However, there is an exemption, you might fall into the temptation of overpreparation and delay in starting your actual success journey. Take time to understand everything that is needed. That might mean having the right skills, and equipment or putting together a small team. For constantly evolving industries, you might need to upskill to catch up.

Shying away from professional help impedes the progress toward your success. When you bring a different perspective into the process, you get new ideas and the motivation you need to keep going. Some other ideas you should consider during your preparation include: 1.
2. 3.
Managing time effectively. This does not only help you account for all the time you spend preparing but also trains you on how to manage your time once you transition into the actual work. Get a good workstation. Prepare to pay the “entry fee”. Almost every venture needs some kind of investment as you start, whether it is a downpayment for a house, capital for a business, money for the right equipment, etc. Having that at hand
9
is an essential part of your success journey. I don’t know exactly what you want to achieve in 2024, but if you start flexing your thinking muscle now, assembling all the tools you need and strategising before the year ends, you’re halfway there. 4 Myths about HECS/HELP and Salary Packaging SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls
Many young Australians are paying off a Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) or Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debt every month. Some of them have found that salary packaging is helping to get rid of that debt quicker. Unfortunately, most people are in the other group, who either believe that you can’t engage in salary packaging when you have a HECS/HELP debt, or that doing so is confusing, and leaves you with less money every month and an additional debt come tax season. This article will put everything straight once and for all when it comes to salary packaging HECS debt. In it, we’ll cover the questions you probably have about salary packaging with a student loan, the benefits, and the process. By the end, you’ll see that not only does salary packaging benefit you every month, but it actually helps you pay off your debt quicker. So, let’s get straight into it.
1.
Salary packaging doesn’t work if you have HECS/HELP debt
This is the most common misconception when it comes to salary packaging and HECS/HELP debt. And you can understand why. Financial issues are complicated and people often find it easier to bury their heads in the sand, so they don’t have to face any of it. But salary packaging HECS debt is as simple as it is possible. And there are a wealth of benefits too. In fact, your experience will be exactly the same as the normal salary packaging process, where you’ll be able to pay reduced income tax (because of salary packaging) and receive extra pay at the end of a month. But there’s another amazing benefit that few people have realised. Because when you salary package with a student loan, your monthly debt repayments will usually increase every month. While most people may see this as a negative, all that really means is that you’re putting more money towards your debt every month. Meaning you’ll pay your loan off quicker.
2.
Salary Packaging increases my HECS/HELP repayment so I have less cash
This is a common misconception, because when you salary package you end up assigning more money to your HECS debt every month. So while it may seem like you have less cash every month, what is actually happening is that the ATO is assigning more of your money towards paying off your loan for you. Here’s how it works. When you make use of salary packaging, you receive more ‘benefits’ because you’re taking home more money at the end of every pay cycle. So the ATO takes your salary amount, adds fringe ‘benefits’ and ends up with your adjusted taxable income. Your adjusted taxable income is used to calculate how much you pay on your HECS/HELP loan every month. The more you salary package, the higher this number will be. But that doesn’t mean you’re left with less cash. As we saw before, what it means is that you’ll already have

4.
saved money from salary packaging in the short term. Plus, because your monthly repayment is higher, you’re paying off your loan quicker. So the money is all yours, some of it is just being channelled into paying off your loan. 3.
Salary packaging has no effect on the HECS interest rate increase.
The reality is that more and more young Australians are using salary packaging to overcome the recent interest rate increase on their student loan. In fact, they’re using the increase to their monthly loan repayments to pay off their loan quicker - so that they can start saving and building their financial futures. On the 1st of June 2023, HECS/HELP debts increased by 7.1% because of inflation, which is unfortunately forecast to become more like the norm each year as interest rates rise after a long period of very low rates. This left the majority of young people in our country in a tough position. But salary packaging can actually be a more effective way of getting rid of that debt. But remember, the more you ‘benefit’ from salary packaging, the higher your adjusted taxable income is - and the higher that is, the more your monthly loan repayment is. So you end up paying off your debt quicker and overcoming the interest rate increase more easily - and all using the savings achieved from salary packaging.
It’s going to leave me with massive tax debt, come tax season.
your future more financially secure and way more financially educated.
No one wants to end up with a debt for unpaid HECS/HELP repayments at tax time. But avoiding it is easy. You can do that by making sure that your employer is deducting an amount for your HECS/HELP loan from your post tax income before you get paid, and that they’re deducting the correct amount. Remember, when you start benefiting from salary packaging your monthly repayment may go up, so ensure that your payroll department is allocating the correct amount to your HECS/HELP debt every month. Employer’s processes differ, but you’re most likely going to need to fill out the ATO’S Tax Declaration form or a Withholding Tax form. Speak to your employer’s finance department, and follow their process. This will mean that you’ll be benefiting from salary packaging, and paying off your HECS/HELP debt quicker - with no nasty surprises come tax season. Easy, right?
It’s always best to bring on a salary packaging expert to help you along the way. The Video Production Process VIDEO PRODUCTION By Allison Groot
As we move into Christmas a lot of companies are working out their marketing and content strategies and budgets for the new year. I thought it would be a great opportunity to talk more about the actual video production process and debunk some of the myths around it. Some of the most common misconceptions are:
That it’s hard to understand, it’s timeconsuming and costly…in part this is true. However, with technology changing so rapidly and the greater accessibility to cinema cameras, production companies can make high-end videos within a lower price bracket, we can simplify the production process and hopefully alleviate the timeconsuming component. In the initial stages and briefing in of the project, the producer will talk with you about what your requirements are. This includes your ideas, the tone of the story, what your key messages are (what you would like to say), your target audience, and anything else that is relevant to your project.
Let’s talk about cost.
This can often take a little bit of time and is the bulk of your commitment. To minimise this process, it is always good to have a clear picture in your head of what you would like to do. If not sure or it’s your first time making a video we will help walk you through the stages. Here’s my simple 10-step breakdown of the production process: Pre-Production: Concepting - The Idea, The Tone, The Style Scripting - Including Key Messages Choosing - Voice Over Artist And Music Interview Questions
Yes, video production is a higher cost than most types of marketing material but the reason for that is you are paying for knowledge and experience. The majority of production companies have a team with a wide and diverse range of expertise. They are trained at crafting and telling visual stories. They understand what works and how to get the most out of your video content, so it is worth looking at hiring a video production company as an investment in your company’s future.
Quick Tip: Look for a video production company who aligns with your company values or who has experience in dealing with your field of work. This will help mitigate any concerns you may have. Production: On location filming Interviews Post-Production: Editing Voice Over Motion Graphics Drafts and Finals The approval process can stump a few people. The initial draft is what we call the assemble edit. We put together a rough edit that includes all the elements that have been discussed previously. This is where most of the feedback comes in. As Christmas approaches, it is the time of year when you’re buying gifts for friends, family, and colleagues. Whether you’re buying or selling unwanted gifts, it’s easy to be fooled and lose your hard earnt money or personal information. These tips will help you steer clear of the most obvious scams, while supporting Australian businesses. Use Reputable Businesses Buying from a business with a storefront or verifiable information is a great way to stay safe this festive season. There are many small Australian businesses selling online that have a verifiable presence, providing you with valuable products and services while supporting local businesses.
Reviews and verification on search engines (Microsoft Bing, Google) and social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) Is the business listed in multiple places? Does it have reviews and feedback? Website address and content Does the website address and content make sense? For example, if the domain name is for a different country or has a different name then you’re expecting, it may be a fraudulent website. ABN Businesses in Australia should have an ABN, this can be checked using the ABN Lookup Tool. A verifiable ABN is a clear way to understand if the business is registered in Australia. Contact Details Are there readily available contact details? Is there a phone number or an address? If you can’t easily reach out to the business you are buying from, even if they are legitimate, it can sour your purchase if you need support.

The deal is too good to be true. Profile lacking information or from a foreign country. Inability to pay via cash or bank transfer. Excuses for not being able to exchange in person in a well-lit public place. Overpayment and request to repay extra. Request for personal information (email, phone number, home address, etc.)
Where possible, organise for local inperson exchanges at safe, public places where you can inspect the purchase before handing over payment. Make sure that you don’t provide more information than necessary, it could lead to possible impersonation or other criminal activity.

Five mythbusters for painting outside in summer around your neck or forehead for instant relief from heat stress. Better still, buy a polyester and cotton wrap: it stays cool for up to 2 days, is non-toxic and lasts for years. Always remember to keep yourself hydrated with water – coffee, tea, juice or even a beer aren’t nearly as effective. If paint fumes tend to make you feel queasy, wear a face mask. (Yes, they’re useful for more than Covid protection!) 5.
Painting won’t take long because it’s hot
Nope. The actual painting process may be quick, but the best paint jobs require preparation that may take longer. Spending time to prepare the surface will deliver the best results.
PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof
With summer holidays approaching, what better time to paint your house! Here, we smash five commonly held myths about outdoor painting in summer to give you a happier painting experience. 1.
The hotter the better as the paint will dry faster
This seems logical but in fact extreme heat causes paint to dry too fast. The paint blisters, flakes and peels, doesn’t stick well and can leave possible brush marks on the surface. Ideal painting temperatures are 15–30 degrees with humidity around 20–70%. The wall you’re painting may be a different temperature from the surrounding air and will need to remain at 10–35 degrees throughout the painting process. Always check the label on the can before beginning. Acrylic paints dry within 20 minutes at 25 degrees; that’s only a moderately warm day. If the thermometer rises above 35 degrees, put down the tools and go somewhere cooler! 2.
Midday is the best time to paint
You’d think that painting when the sun is at its highest in the sky would give you an advantage, but no. A golden rule is –
follow the shadow. Painting earlier in the morning or towards sunset is much better for you and what you’re painting. Avoid the glare and heat by painting the surface on the opposite side to the sun. in the hottest part of the day, you can remove detachable shutters, door and window frames and paint them in the shade, and for inside paint jobs, open the windows and doors to release any paint fumes. 3.
Any hot day is the best day to paint
You could rely on this if you were painting in the Sahara but Victoria’s weather is liable to change swiftly from one extreme to the next. A bright summer’s day can quickly become a thunderstorm. So plan your painting day with the aid of the weather forecast, and keep an ear out for possible conditions such as dust, wind, bushfire smoke (hopefully not!) and rain. 4.
You will need to clean your brushes, wash the dust and cobwebs off walls, windows, fascias and gutters, and then let them dry. Remove mould and scrape away all blistered old paint before beginning. Lay out drop sheets where you want them. Tie back or prune plants to give yourself clear access. You may wish to apply masking tape around window glass, door handles and other such items to prevent paint splashes and smears. (Remember to remove the tape before the paint has thoroughly dried as lifting it off later can leave a ragged, jagged edge.) If you follow these precautions, you will end up with a beautiful house, without damaging your health!
For all painting advice, contact Dahllof Painting Services at sjd67@bigpond.net. au. We will be happy to answer your enquiries.
I’m fit so I’ll have this house painted in no time!
Warning: after Covid lockdowns, you might not be as fit as you were this time last year...or two years ago? And there’s physically more to painting than just stretching and lifting cans and brushes. For a start, long periods in the sun can lead to heat stroke. You must cover your head with a broad-brimmed hat, preferably with a neck flap, and liberally apply sunscreen every one or two hours. Soak a flannel in cool water and apply

That way in January of February depending on your business you can do a thorough analysis on your store to assist with 2024 planning. When analysing the data collected you can make sound decisions in your planning for 2024 to ensure your store sales and profit keep growing. Define any problems Determine all the factors that affected the business and analyse both the good and the bad in each case. Define the problem areas within the business, which worked and which did not: • When did you sell out of key items your clients are looking for? • Did you maximise your marketing opportunities? • Where there staff shortages at specific times? • Did the Adverting draw clients into you? • Did your marketing program work what did and what did not? • Did you maximise your opportunities with collaborations? • Did you have draw cards at the front of the store? • What theatre were you able to create instore? • Did you have key lost leaders? • Where your staff knowledgeable in all your products? • More as applicable to specific stores. Once the issues are Defined you can look to Determine which of those areas worked well. Why did they work so well? What were the effects on the business and how could be even better in 2024? • Did you sell out too quickly? • Exclusivity, did you have a range of products that were very different to your competition?
• • • • • •
Did you have additional items to complement the range? Did you have plenty of the key items? Were they displayed properly? Did you allocate enough space? Did you have sufficient staff when needed? Were the deliveries staggered to enable the staff to get them all on the floor in a timely manner?
What were some opportunities that you overlooked that could grow your business next year? • Extended trading hours, where applicable? • Additional Staff training or knowledge? • Customer service such as gift wrapping the goods? • Complimentary gift cards? • Appropriate packaging? • If the packaging was an issue are the products saleable through the year when the packaging is removed? What did not sell to plan? • Where deliveries too early? • Were deliveries too late? • Were they displayed properly? • Did you execute an exit plan in a timely and cost-effective manner? • Did you have too much stock? • Did you advertise or market in anyway? • Did the marketing plan work? • Why did it not work? • Did you cover the five rights of retail ° ° ° ° °
Right Products Right Quantiy Right Quality Right Time Right Price
The lists above just touch the tip of the iceberg of each of the possible issues Defined and the possible factors Determined to affect the outcome. There are so many more possibilities to be explored. Each business has it own needs Defined and parameters Determined, making it unique, creating a demand in your business, through differentiation to competitors. By MidJanuary it is too late Analysis of these issue and the determining factors will enable you to PLAN better for 2024. Planning needs to be both Strategic and Tactical. Your tax guide for parties and presents this Christmas
ACCOUNTANT By Anjana Jogi
As we approach Christmas and the holiday season, it sometimes may get difficult to keep on top of your tax obligations. To ease matters, here is a comprehensive guide that highlights the key tax matters relating to Christmas parties and gifting. Any Christmas gestures by you, whether it’s a staff Christmas party or gifting your staff members a hamper of a gift card may have certain tax implications. Presents for staff members Buying your staff members a present this Christmas? Keeping the amount below $300 per person may qualify it as a minor and fringe benefit (s 58p FBTAA 1986) and hence exempt from fringe benefits tax (FBT). Hampers and gift cards may also be exempt from FBT if the value of each item is less than $300. To qualify as a minor benefit the presents must be infrequent and not ongoing, like memberships or subscriptions. The total value of similar benefits provided throughout the FBT year should also be considered.
Christmas bonus
Presents for staff members while attending the Christmas party
If you are planning to provide cash bonuses to your employee, please note, a cash bonus is not treated as a gift and gets taxed as ordinary time earnings subject to PAYG withholding and superannuation guarantee provisions.
If you give your staff members their Christmas presents at the Christmas party, the benefits become associated benefits, but each benefit needs to be considered for the exemption separately.
Staff Christmas Party The cost of food and drink associated with a Christmas party is exempt from FBT if they are provided on a working day on your business premises and consumed by current employees. This exemption is only available for employees, not associates. If a Christmas party is not held on the business premises and the cost per person is less than $300, it may also be exempt from FBT under the minor benefits rule.
Contact us
Still have questions? Reach out to us and our team will be pleased to work with you to resolve your queries. If you’re facing operational issues, tackling people challenges, or have health and safety questions, give us a call, email us or text us. We are here to help.
The ATO expects that the identical or similar benefits are provided infrequently but regularly (ie every Christmas) to qualify for the minor benefits exemption.
Anjana Jogi
If the cost per person is more than $300 and FBT gets levied on the business, the overall cost can be claimed as a tax deduction as at year end.

Life insurance through the ages FINANCIAL PLANNER By Warren Strybosch
Whoever said, ‘the more things change the more they stay the same’, was dead wrong when it comes to life insurance. While protection against adversity is always wise, your actual needs change as you move through different ages and stages of life. From when you take your first job and go out into the world, life insurance in all its many forms has a role to play. Life insurance falls into four main categories: • Income protection - Pays a monthly benefit if you are unable to work due to sickness or injury • Trauma - Pays a lump sum for a specific injury or illness • Total and permanent disability (TPD) - Pays a lump sum if you are permanently unable to work • Death - Pays a lump sum if you die or become terminally ill. Shifting needs Life insurance is like a bell curve – you need a low level of cover when you are setting out in life, growing to a high level in your middle years when your responsibilities and debts are at their peak and then possibly dropping back when you retire. The need for cover is ultimately about ensuring you have sufficient financial back-up should something go wrong. While superannuation offers most Australians some form of life insurance, it is generally a basic level of cover and may need topping up outside super. Each stage of life has its challenges, whether you are young and single, just married, starting a family, empty nesters or retiring. Whenever a major event occurs in your life, such as marriage or the birth of a child, you need to consider whether you have the right cover for your current needs. Young and single When you are starting out in life you may not need life cover, but what would happen if you were injured in a car crash and couldn’t work for six months? What happens when your sick leave runs out? How would you pay your rent, car loan, utility bills and basic living expenses? That’s when income protection insurance can be a lifeline.
Just married Once you are part of a couple you naturally want to protect each other’s wellbeing. If something happened to either one of you it could put tremendous strains on the other person. This is even more likely if you have bought a home and are saddled with a mortgage. Life insurance, income protection and trauma insurance can all help you protect your lifestyle. And both partners should seek cover because both are contributing. Starting a family Once children come on the scene, the need for life insurance is even greater. If something were to happen to you or your partner, then the financial burden could be significant. Who would look after the children? Could they stay at the same schools? Could your partner pay the mortgage on one salary? Income protection, life insurance, trauma insurance and total and permanent disability should all be considered. Once again, it’s important to make sure both partners are covered – even if one isn’t working, the costs associated with childcare and household tasks can be considerable. Empty nesters Just because the children have left home doesn’t mean you don’t still need access to money should something occur. Sure, you are probably at the peak of your earnings, but many empty nesters still have a mortgage. Even if you don’t, why put at risk all the wealth you and your partner have worked hard to build up for your retirement? Life insurance can help you protect these assets. Retirement Once you are retired, your need for life insurance may diminish. At this stage of life, you will probably have paid off your mortgage and your children are likely to be independent. As a result, insurance cover might just be a means to leave an inheritance for your children. Or you might want to have a policy to provide for your funeral. Life is forever changing, as are your insurance needs. It is not a one-size-fitsall. How to plan a gap year for grown ups It’s not just school leavers who dream of a gap year. Those of us who’ve been working for a decade or two (or more) may also long for a real break from career and commitments.
It does not even need to be a year – just enough of an extended break to reset and to take stock of what’s important to you. There‘s the opportunity to learn new skills or another language, explore different cultures or do a road trip around Australia. By planning ahead and making sure your break is not going to derail future financial goals, taking an extended period off work can be achievable. Dare to dream Start by finding an idea that might work for you. There are a host of websites that can help you to plan your adult gap year. They will provide tips and tricks for travel and where to find work (paid or volunteer). You might consider: •
Setting off around Australia. Taking off on an extended trip you can take the time along the way to really get to know parts of the country you’ve never seen. You could camp, caravan or stay in quirky country motels along the way.
•
Chasing the sun. Research affordable countries in warmer climates and set up in a beach shack. You will need to check rules on tourist visas.
•
Becoming a backpacker. There are plenty of cheap but comfortable accommodation options around the world to allow you to prolong your time away.
•
Taking a long walk. You can find much-loved and ancient tracks in Australia and around the world to expand your horizons. From the Great Himalayan Trail in Nepal – to Spain‘s Camino De Santiago, or one of Australia‘s iconic walks such as the Heysen Trail in South Australia.
The importance of planning Once you have established what your break will involve, work out a budget that takes account of the costs you will continue to incur (such as mortgage or loan repayments, insurance, utilities, car registration and rates) as well as your best estimates for accommodation, food, travel and spending money for your destination(s). Don‘t be daunted by an amount that may appear unachievable at first glance.

Work out how to save on costs when travelling. Some ideas include: •
•
•
Living like a local. Try swapping your house with someone in another part of the world. House swap websites match up homeowners looking to live in different places for varying periods of time. Alternatively, you could rent out your home while you are away and/or sign up to a housesitting website. Working differently. Your gap year might be more about doing something different than taking it easy. Find organisations and websites – such as http://workaway.info/ and http:// wwoof.com.au/ - that cater for working travellers. You could choose to work on farms around the world in return for food and board for example. Becoming a digital nomad. If manual labour isn‘t your thing, you could pack your computer and hook up to one of the many digital work websites – such as http://digitalnomadsworld. com/, http://upwork.com/ or http:// fiverr.com/. Many countries now encourage this trend by offering digital nomad visas.
Then, with your costs under control, and a clear goal in mind, it‘s time for a savings plan. You will want to reduce your current living expenses as much as possible to maximise savings and think about setting up a direct debit to a high interest savings account. Check the https://moneysmart. gov.au/saving/savings-goals-calculator to see how much you will need to save every month. If you have more than a few years to plan your gap year, you could look into some longer term savings and investment options such as shares, exchangetraded funds (ETFs), or term deposits. While a gap year is exciting, planning ahead financially is essential to ensure you don’t fall into debt. You also need to carefully consider how this could affect your long-term financial goals. You probably won’t be making super contributions, so this may impact your super balance and retirement plans.
Keeping your self accountable
“At the end of the day, we are accountable to ourselves our success is a result of what we do.” - CATHERINE PULSIFER
It can be both empowering and a little uncomfortable to think that we are responsible for our successes – and failures.
Being willing to accept the consequences of our actions, choices or behaviours is not always easy. We’ve all at some time or another played the ‘blame game’. It’s so easy to look outward and blame others for our problems, hardships or the obstacles that are getting in the way of us achieving our goals and dreams. For example, it’s the company’s fault that I keep getting passed over for that promotion, my team at work is holding me back, my partner is not being supportive enough of me. The reality is there are always external forces at play that impact our lives and focussing on these external forces takes away our personal accountability. What does it mean to be accountable? Being personally accountable means taking responsibility for one’s own actions (or in some cases – lack of action!). It’s maintaining an ongoing commitment to yourself and what is important to you. Here are a few ways you can become more accountable: 1. Remove the roadblocks It all starts with your mindset. Choose to consciously embrace an accountable approach and recognise that you are the architect of your destiny. That means letting go of the excuses and recognising them for what they are - roadblocks that are holding you back from taking responsibility for your own actions. 2. Set goals It helps to know what you are trying to achieve – whether that be in your career, relationships or personal life. Take the time to set concrete goals, jot them down, and have a plan of how you will achieve them and in what timeframe. Start by setting yourself smaller goals as they will be easier to achieve in the beginning. Setting goals (even if they are small ones) and achieving them allows you to prove to yourself and others that you can and will hold yourself accountable. 3. Create your own opportunities Accountability empowers you to be in control of your actions in your personal life and career. You can create your own opportunities rather than passively allowing life to happen to you. Being accountable is about fulfilling your obligations to yourself as well as to others, so when you achieve what you’ve been aiming for, take time to recognise these milestones and celebrate them.
4. Take responsibility for your decisions Embrace the ‘good, the bad - and the ugly’ and accept the consequences of your actions, choices and behaviours, be they positive or negative. Revel in the positives, but don’t be afraid to admit and own up to your mistakes. One of the most powerful ways we learn is through making mistakes and taking responsibility for them. That means acknowledging that there is a problem, identifying your role in it and proposing a solution to minimise or eliminate the chances of it happening again. 5. Learn from your mistakes To reach your potential it’s necessary keep extending what you are capable of and taking risks and that means making mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up but think of what you would have done differently and what you’ve learned from the experience. 6. Ask for help The road to success does not have to be a lonely one. An accountability partner can be someone who shares your goals and supports you to keep your commitments or maintain progress on a desired goal. Having an accountability partner has been proven to increase your chances of success to an astonishing 95% if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed to.

including writing a ‘to do’ list so that you don’t wake with it during the night. Realistic Expectations It’s easy to get caught up in the pictureperfect holiday vision depicted in social media. However, it’s so important to remember what Christmas is about, so set realistic expectations for yourself and your celebrations, let others help even if they don’t quite do things the same way you might. Embrace imperfections and focus on the joy of spending time with loved ones. Practice Gratitude
A Calmer Christmas NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger
The lead-up to Christmas can be a whirlwind of activity, shopping, planning, and celebrations. While it’s an exciting time for kids, being the parent who is often reminded of the countdown and just how few days they have let to get through the never-ending list, can be overwhelming and stressful. Finding ways to stay calm and maintain a balanced lifestyle is crucial to enjoy both the traditions of this special time of year and your family. Here are some tips for remaining calm and healthy as you navigate the bustling days before Christmas. Prioritise Self-Care In the midst of shopping for gifts, decorating, and preparing meals, it’s easy to neglect self-care. However, taking time for yourself is essential for mental and physical health. Incorporate short breaks into your day to recharge and reduce stress. Even a few minutes of deep breathing or a brisk walk can make a significant difference, or catch up with a friend if you have a litle more time.
Mindful Eating Holiday feasts are a common part of Christmas, but overindulgence can lead to feelings of guilt and discomfort, and sometimes weight gain. Practice mindful eating by savoring your food, eating slowly, and paying attention to hunger and fullness cues. This can help you enjoy a treat without overdoing it. If you do have a massive dinner, skip breakfast and wait until you feel hungry before eating again.
Christmas is an excellent time to reflect on what you’re grateful for, and what you really value in your life. Regularly acknowledge the positive aspects of your life. Gratitude can boost your mental wellbeing and help you maintain a positive perspective, even when things get busy. In conclusion, finding balance and maintaining calm during the lead-up to Christmas is really important for your health and well-being. Prioritising selfcare, mindful eating, exercise, sleep, and realistic expectations will go a long way in reducing stress and helping you enjoy Christmas and the lead up to it. If you make choices that support your physical and mental health, it may mean a happier and healthier Christmas for your whole family.
At Whole Naturopathy we can treat a nervous system imbalance, reduce your stress, and help to increase your energy levels if you’re needing some extra support at this time of year
Stay Active Regular exercise is a powerful tool for managing stress. Even during this busy time, make time for physical activity. It can be as simple as a quick home workout, a walk in the evening, or dancing to your favourite music. Exercise not only relieves stress but also boosts mood and energy levels.
This advice is general in nature and not intended to be prescriptive. For individualised prescriptive advice, please see a naturopath or other health care practitioner.
Adequate Sleep Sleep is often sacrificed during the holidays due to late-night parties and additional responsibilities. However, quality sleep is vital for health and managing stress. Prioritise your sleep, aim for 7-9 hours of sleep, create a relaxing bedtime routine

Tips for a meaningful Christmas
(Feedsy Exclusive)
Creating a Christmas filled with genuine warmth and joy often seems like a daunting task amidst the hustle of holiday preparations. The season of cheer can quickly turn into a flurry of stress, leaving many of us more relieved than regretful when it’s over. If you find yourself nodding along, it’s time to pause and rethink how to celebrate Christmas meaningfully with your family and friends.
of baking, where the whole family gets involved in making cookies to share with friends and neighbours. Volunteering as a family at a local shelter can also be a tradition that not only brings your family together but also extends love to those in need. These acts need not be grandiose; their repetition over the years will weave them into the warm fabric of your family’s Christmas.
Selective Festivity: The Art of Saying No
Gift-Giving: A Deliberate Gesture of Love
The first step to a fulfilling Christmas is to be discerning about which events to attend. Begin by planning your gatherings thoughtfully, considering the unavoidable holiday traffic and the dizzying crowds if shopping is on the agenda. Prioritise events that enrich the season’s meaning for you and your loved ones. Learning to say no is crucial—it allows you to say yes to experiences that truly matter. For instance, if attending a community carol service uplifts you more than an office party, choose the former. It’s these choices that will curate your holiday into a series of joyful memories rather than a checklist of obligations.
Rushing through gift-buying can lead to forgettable presents. Instead, take time to consider what would be meaningful to each recipient. Handmade gifts, though they may require more time and effort, can carry significant personal value. Alternatively, purchasing from charities or non-profit organisations can add a layer of purpose to your gift-giving. This thoughtful approach to presents is about quality over quantity, about showing love and appreciation in a way that resonates personally with each loved one.
New Traditions: Weaving the Fabric of Family
Christmas is the perfect backdrop for reaching out to those you’ve lost touch with. Whether it’s through a heartfelt letter, a long-overdue phone call, or a message, reconnecting with a distant relative or an old friend can rekindle important relationships. The season’s spirit of forgiveness and renewal makes it an ideal
Traditions serve as the backbone of family memories and can be delightfully Christmas tree together, swapping stories and dreams as you hang each ornament. Or perhaps institute a Christmas Eve tradition
Reconnections: Tying Up Loose Ends of Meaningful Relationships
time to mend fences and renew bonds that time or circumstance may have strained. Meaningful Movie Nights: More Than Just Entertainment Finally, consider making movie nights a special part of your Christmas tradition. Choose films with themes that resonate with the spirit of Christmas—generosity, love, and kindness. This shared activity can be both entertaining and inspiring, setting a tone for the holiday season. Let each family member take turns selecting a film each year, ensuring that everyone’s tastes are honoured and making it an eagerly awaited family event. In wrapping up, these five tips aim to transform your Christmas into an experience that’s rich with personal connection and joy. It’s about creating a season that’s not just bearable but memorable. As you implement these ideas, may you find your Christmas becoming a time where love is demonstrated, memories are made, and the holiday spirit is truly alive. Here’s to a happy and heartfelt Christmas! A memorial celebrating the life and achievements of the late Frank Costa AO has been unveiled to his family, councillors, Cats representatives and community members on the corner of Ryrie and Moorabool Streets. Funded by the City of Greater Geelong, the Costa family, Rory Costelloe and the Geelong Cats, ‘The Newsboy’ sculpture recognises the many roles Frank Costa played in the community: a generous philanthropist, passionate Geelong Football Club president, well-known businessman and fierce advocate for our region. Accomplished Australian artist and sculptor Louis Laumen has spent six months in the studio and foundry carefully crafting the bronze statue through the process of Lost Wax Casting. Frank Costa is represented as a 13-yearold newsboy outside the T&G Building, where he sold newspapers and subcontracted other paperboys. The statue explores a number of unifying themes evident in his life: • •
• • •
the newspaper represents his ties to the Greater Geelong community the Herald front page about Geelong’s 1951 Grand Final victory over Essendon links to his lifelong dedication to the Cats and crucial role as President (1998-2010) when Frank’s business sense elevated and united the club the burden of papers in his arm pays homage to his strong and unwavering work ethic the money pouch represents his business acumen and appreciation of the value of a shilling and the newsboy stands on a fruitbox pedestal, alluding to the greengrocer trade and family business that started in 1888 and grew into the highly successful Costa Group.
The newspaper being held aloft in the sculpture details how more than 85,000 people watched the Cats claim its fourth premiership by 11 points amid police clashes with up to 8,000 people locked out of the MCG. The article text is fully legible. The celebrated sculptor has completed many commissions across Australia, such as the Dennis Lillee statue at the MCG and Nicky Winmar at Optus Stadium. The artist was carefully chosen through an invited Expression of Interest to a select number of Australia’s leading bronze sculptors working in the figurative form.
Permanent recognition for Frank Costa AO Artist Louis Laumen, Mayor Trent Sullivan, Frank’s wife Shirley Costa and Cats champion Joel Selwood.
Rory Costelloe (Geelong Authority member) approached Council with the idea to create a permanent memorial to Frank Costa.
The cost to fabricate and install the memorial was $100,000.
Mayor Trent Sullivan Council is thrilled with how this permanent tribute to such an iconic Geelong figure turned out. Frank’s passing two years ago remains a massive loss to our community because of his incredible advocacy and contributions to make our region the best it can be. He is known as a legend in these parts and it’s only fitting that we celebrate his values and achievements through a bronze statue. We are very grateful to sculptor Louis Laumen for his commitment to this important project and his skilled eye for detail. The statue not only illustrates the many facets of Frank’s life, but symbolises a youthful sense of adventure, entrepreneurism, and the promise of a bright future that the community can relate to. Gillian Costa - Franks’ daughter I’ve worked on the project from Rory Costelloe’s initial concept and am honoured and humbled to be involved with such a significant piece of both family and Geelong history. The T&G corner is where Dad began his entrepreneurial journey, so this statue is not only a lovely way to remember him and the big part he played in Geelong as an employer, visionary and champion of growth, it also illustrates a moment of Geelong’s past in such a lovely way that residents and visitors alike can relate to and enjoy.

City unveils Rainbow Crossing Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken addresses the gathering at the unveiling of the Rainbow Crossing in Yarra St
The City of Greater Geelong has unveiled a permanent rainbow pedestrian crossing on Yarra Street, under the Westfield flyover, as a symbol of pride in the diversity of the region and a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community. The rainbow flag (also known as the Pride flag) is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) pride and social movements. The rainbow design chosen for the crossing is based on Valentino Vecchietti’s progress pride flag design, the most current and inclusive rainbow flag to date. The flag has integrated, alongside the traditional rainbow colors, the transgender flag, intersex flag and the brown and black lines to represent all people of colour, including First Nations Australians. The need for a rainbow crossing in Geelong has been expressed by the community consistently over the last four years. Planning was initiated which included the installation of a non-permanent mini crossing in Little Malop Street, at the launch of Geelong Rainbow Festival 2020. However, the planning for the permanent crossing stalled until 2022 due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.
Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken “The installation signifies the City’s commitment to the region’s diverse rainbow community. The rainbow crossing forms a vibrant and colourful representation of the City’s support for the local rainbow community. The installation of a permanent rainbow crossing is a part of the broader City strategy to be an inclusive local government.” Amanda Glasson - LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee and Liberty Disability Services Director “It’s great to see City of Greater Geelong visually representing our PRIDE community, showing that we are all welcome here, taking a hardline stance on LGBTQIASB+ discrimination and moving towards being an inclusive city. The rainbow crossing means a lot to so many within our local community.” Jen Walsh - LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee member “The region’s LGBTQIA+ community is grateful for the City’s investment in the rainbow crossing. It is a powerful symbol of hope for all LGBTIQA+ people and their loved ones across the region. The colours represented by the Progress Flag indicate that all City of Greater Geelong residents have the right to live as our authentic selves, and that our LGBTIQA+ identities deserve to be celebrated. At a time when a lot of LGBTIQA+ people are doing it tough, this rainbow crossing is a strong sign of solidarity and strength.”

take your rubbish with you
surrounding land and water, or spread about by wildlife. When this happens, what was heaped rubbish becomes litter. This sounds bad, but it gets worse. The same way the more rubbish is heaped around a bin, the more people will heap rubbish around it, the more litter spread across an area, the more likely people feel it is okay to litter. If you take your rubbish with you, others are likely to copy The good news is, the cleaner an area, the more pressure people feel to keep it clean. If they notice others taking part in a new rubbish related behaviour, taking it with them, they are likely to be more open to doing the same themselves. Simply seeing others approach the bin, but decide not to use it and instead take their rubbish with them, means they are likely to do the same. Okay, you’ve convinced me – but where should I take my rubbish instead?
This year you might notice signs around Geelong asking ‘If you can, take your rubbish with you’. This request is for everyone, tourists and residents. And here’s why. Geelong is beautiful We all know Greater Geelong is a beautiful place to live, which is why our home receives more than six million visitors per year. It is up to everyone, whether they live here permanently or are only here for the day, to keep it that way . Last year popular areas such as Eastern Beach received more than 10,000 visitors per day during the peak period. We are doing our best to help everyone do the right thing and dispose of their rubbish correctly by putting additional bins, skips, and daily rubbish collections in place, but due to the sheer volume of people and the rubbish they generate, it can be difficult to keep up. This is why we are asking everyone, no matter where they live: ‘If you can, take your rubbish with you’ even if the bin is not full.
Why should I take my rubbish with me? There are a two main reasons: 1. To prevent bins filling up Not everyone will be able to take their rubbish with them. If you can though, and choose to do so, it leaves more room in the bin for those that are unable. This is important, and leads into the second reason. To stop rubbish being stacked on and around bins When bins are full, people begin to stack their rubbish on top of them, or at their base. Once this starts, more and more people notice, do the same, and the heap gets bigger, making it more noticeable, leading to more people heaping more rubbish, and so on. This is an example of people trying to do the right behaviour – put rubbish in the bin – but as they are unable, copying their peers in what they see as the next best thing. Most people who do this don’t think of themselves as litterers.
What you do with your rubbish instead will depend on your particular circumstances, but here are a few suggestions to get you started: •
If you bought food or drink from a café or take away you could return the packaging to the business
•
Take your rubbish back to your house or holiday accommodation and put it in the bin there.
•
Remember, if your recycling bin is filling up you can take excess recycling to the Geelong or Drysdale Resource Recovery Centres.
•
Eligible drink containers can be returned to CDS points.
2.
Stacked rubbish turns into litter
Remember, every little bit helps Even if you can’t take every single bit of rubbish with you, every little bit helps. You might scrunch up a greasy food wrapper and put it in the nearest bin, but then take your empty drink container you have to your nearest CDSpoint. You have still helped save space in the bins in the area you visited.

Revitalising the heart of Geelong A bold vision to transform the Market Square Quarter at the heart of central Geelong proposes a pedestrian ‘EatStreet’, an outdoor market and two new plazas designed in collaboration with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners. Council has endorsed the draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan for community consultation. It seeks to guide development and progressively reinvigorate the city block bound by Malop, Yarra, Ryrie and Moorabool streets. The preferred ‘Malop Heart’ option proposes turning the Market Square Quarter into the thriving heart of Geelong, with Little Malop Street Central • reinvigorated as a welcoming, accessible, vibrant, safe and inclusive meeting place • that celebrates Wadawurrung Country. • This option would feature: •
• • • •
A north-south pedestrian ‘Eat Street’ with outdoor dining, creating an important extension of Union Street through the site; A new plaza on Malop Street that benefits from northern light; An adaptable central open space to support outdoor events and markets; 5-12 storey development above parking, with the potential to include a fresh food (super) market; and Conversion of Union Street to slow traffic speeds with more greenery planted.
This option strongly aligns with the vision and objectives of the Central Geelong Framework, is the most commercially attractive and delivers best practice urban design and built form outcomes. The draft master plan was shaped by extensive consultation earlier this year through online and in person conversations with residents, visitors, landowners and occupiers, the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Cooperation and the Department of Transport and Planning. Our Have Your Say page consisted of multiple comment boards for the community to provide their suggestions and feedback, receiving nearly 8,500 views from 3,341 visitors. The top 5 opportunities identified by the community were: •
Introduction of more dining opportunities;
More public art, live music and events; More diverse shopping opportunities; and Creating an externalised shopping experience or high street.
• •
•
They also identified existing issues: •
Perceptions of lack of safety including anti-social behaviour or needing police presence;
•
Concerns around bus stops; Concerns around public realm being uninviting, tired and neglected, untidy, lacking atmosphere; Concerns around poor access and parking for private vehicles within and around the precinct; and Concerns around accessibility and poor pedestrian connections.
Mayor Trent Sullivan “The Market Square Quarter location is of strategic importance to the whole of Geelong. This city block is a prime destination for both locals and visitors looking to shop, dine and experience the best of what the region has to offer. Redevelopment of the site would provide in demand housing, hotel, retail and office space as well as public gathering spaces that serve as a daily meeting point or location for major events and cultural celebrations. We want to create strong connections, celebrate the site’s significance to Wadawurrung people and work with existing heritage elements to reinvigorate central Geelong. Help us collectively achieve the best outcomes for this area, the community and our economy by looking through the masterplan and having your say.” Councillor Peter Murrihy: “The feedback from this round of consultation will inform the final masterplan, before going to Council for endorsement in 2024. The final vision will require partnerships between landowners, developers, local and state government, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the broader Geelong community to be fully realised. This draft master plan supports Council’s efforts to revitalise central Geelong through grants, Geelong Major Events, our free Business Concierge service and other masterplans such as the Draft Mercer and Gheringhap Streetscape Masterplan.” Consultation through an online survey and in-person sessions are underway: visit the have your say page before Sunday 11 February.

Cat vaccine shortage impacts Council services The City of Greater Geelong has made changes to its cat trapping services as the result of a nationwide cat vaccine shortage, due to production issues. Effective immediately, and for the foreseeable future, the City of Greater Geelong will not be offering or performing cat trapping within the municipality. This is to reduce the number of cats needing to be taken to shelters, particularly the City’s pound service operator, Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS), who are currently experiencing critical supply shortages. While the situation will be actively monitored, and cat trapping services will resume as soon as possible, the situation is unlikely to change until February next year at the earliest. In an effort to manage capacity at GAWS, a number of other actions will also be implemented to slow or cease admissions: •
•
The surrender of cats will be discouraged until the supply of vaccination stock has recovered. Food and bedding support will be provided where possible. Whilst the vaccine shortage is impacting shelters, free Council registration will be offered for newly adopted cats currently in GAWS, for the remainder of the current period and through to April 2025.
•
There will be an extension of the current subsidised cat desexing program offered by the City at GAWS to minimise litters in coming months. The concession requirement will be removed, and program dates extended until funding allocation is exhausted.
The City is continuing to work closely with GAWS to monitor and respond to the
situation as it unfolds and remains committed to supporting animal welfare. Adopting a cat, keeping your cat indoors, ensuring your cat is wearing Council registration tag when outdoors, desexing your cat, or making a donation to a local animal shelter or rescue group are some ways residents may consider helping during this critical time.
Mayor Trent Sullivan “The vaccination shortage is a significant issue that is being experienced on a national scale. The health and wellbeing of cats in care is of utmost importance and the City is doing its part to support the community based on the advice provided by our shelter partners at Geelong Animal Welfare Society. While we’ve been told the situation is temporary, there is currently no confirmation of when vaccines supply will increase and so we encourage the community to do their bit to help.”
Alistair Miller - Acting Executive Director Community Service Delivery “As difficult as the situation is, there are a variety of ways in which the community can help reduce the pressure on the system. All cat owners have a role to play by keeping cats safely inside their homes, so as to minimise the risk of contracting or transmitting disease in the community. Along with considering making a donation to GAWS, the community can play it’s part by desexing their cat and considering cat adoption to reduce the load on the shelter system.”

Marshalltown Road/Bailey Street closure
Mayor Trent Sullivan, Principal Tina Barnett, School Captain Isabelle Petsas, School Captain Amaya Lesko, Libby Coker MP Federal Member for Corangamite, Assistant Principal Graham Byworth.
The Marshalltown Road/Bailey Street intersection (roundabout) is set to undergo improvements as part of the 2023-2024 BlackSpot Safety program resulting in full road closures from the 3 January until 25 January 2024. This project is aimed at enhancing road safety and increasing pedestrian security, with a focus on attenuating approach speeds and providing improved accessibility. The key aspects of the project include: •
•
•
•
Installation of wombat crossings: wombat crossings will be installed on all approaches to the intersection, enhancing pedestrian safety and making it easier for residents to navigate the area. Roundabout upgrades: the roundabout at Marshalltown Road/ Bailey Street will be upgraded, along with drainage, splitter islands, kerb ramps, and the provision of new footpaths. This comprehensive redesign will ensure the entire outer perimeter of the intersection is properly linked, providing accessibility at each quadrant. Street light upgrade: an expert review and analysis have led to the implementation of a street light upgrade, improving visibility and safety for all road users. Awareness initiatives: the project also aims to increase awareness of vulnerable road users at the roundabout intersection, fostering a safer and more considerate environment.
The extensive list of improvements includes new footpaths, roundabouts, kerb and channel enhancements, street lighting upgrades, and drainage improvements. Additionally, all new footpath pram ramps/laybacks, asphalt wombat crossings, asphalt overlays on all approaches to the roundabout, and new signage and line-marking with further delineation upgrades featuring Raised Reflective Pavement Markers (RRPM’s) are part of the project. While these enhancements will significantly improve road safety and accessibility in Grovedale, the closure of Marshalltown Rd and Bailey St will be necessary during the construction period. Local residents and commuters are encouraged to plan alternate routes and expect delays. Please follow detour signs and roadwork advisories to ensure a safe and efficient commute.
The Marshalltown Road/Bailey Street intersection in Grovedale is one of the priority areas selected for improvement in the 2023-2024 program.
Ms Libby Coker - Federal Member for Corangamite “Located just nearby a primary school, childcare center and a busy shopping area, this federally funded upgrade of the Marshalltown Road and Bailey Street intersection will go a long way to improving safety for residents in the fast-growing area of Grovedale. I’d like to once again thank everyone in the Grovedale community who advocated for this much-needed upgrade, and also emphasise that the safety of construction workers and local residents must be a top priority as works get underway in January next year.”
This project represents a substantial investment in the safety and infrastructure of the Grovedale community. The Marshalltown Road/Bailey Street intersection is set to become a model for road safety, accessibility, and community enhancement.

Now in its seventh year, Elf Squad Inc. is the little, Geelong-based charity that makes a BIG difference to hundreds of local children and teens-in-need each Christmas.
Elf Squad Inc.’s network of volunteer elves now collects more physical toy donations than any other Christmas charity in the Greater Geelong region. And they unite more business and community volunteers at Christmas than any other local notfor-profit. Elf Squad Inc. Founder, Stephanie Beitzel, explains,
“Geelong region locals support Elf Squad Inc. because they know we don’t have ANY paid employees, offices, big ad campaigns or overheads. They love knowing EVERY toy and tax-deductible donation will ONLY be used to help families across our region who are seriously struggling. And the fact that we provide unique experiences for business, community and family groups to get involved and give back is the almond on the Christmas cake!” As the Christmas season is now in full swing, community need is at an all-time high. It’s not too late for you to get involved in Elf Squad Inc. and support local families-in-need. Here are 5 easy ways to make a difference: 1. Book a shift – or group event - in the Elf Squad Elf Factory Each December, Elf Squad Inc. runs its iconic ‘Elf Squad Elf Factory’, where hundreds of elves - young and old – book in for a 4-hour shifts to sort toys, print paper, stencil Elf Sacks, make cards and wrap thousands of presents, as they listen to Christmas classics, enjoy festive treats and make magical memories. Business and community groups also love booking a shift for their people, to celebrate end of year, combined with a lovely lunch or evening drinks event.
The 2023 ‘Elf Squad Elf Factory’ is at Vines Road Community Centre, Hamlyn Heights, and is open most days and nights, from 10 am to 9 pm, from Tuesday 12 December til Christmas Eve. This truly unique and heart-warming experience is $15 per adult, $10 concession, $5 per child or $30 per family of up to 5. Group Bookings for 10 or more people are also available for $15 pp, or from $30 pp with a catered lunch or evening drinks event. Bookings are essential, with all proceeds going to Elf Squad Inc. At the time of writing, there were still individual shifts and a few group bookings available. Check the Elf Squad Facebook Page, or website, for latest availability and to book.
2. Donate NEW Toys & Gifts Elf Squad Inc. welcomes donations of NEW and UNWRAPPED gifts for ages 0 to 21. Art supplies, stationery, sports gear, games and Bluetooth speakers or headphones are always in high demand, as are gift cards, toiletries and stationery sets for older kids. There are 30 collection points across the Greater Geelong region, that are receiving items right up to Christmas. We’re also able to receive donations direct to the ‘Elf Squad Elf Factory’ from 12 December to 22 December. This year, for the first time, we’re also accepting donations until 5 January, 2024, so that our supporters can take advantage of the Boxing Day and New Year’s Sales and help us stock up for next Christmas. Where possible, donations from K-Mart, Target or Myer are preferable. These stores happily accept returns for store credit. This is vital for us, as we always receive huge volumes of gifts for toddlers and little kids, and very little for teens and older children. We rely heavily on the easy exchange policy with these larger stores to provide suitable gifts for all ages and interests.

6 ways thieves can tell when you’ve gone away If you’re heading off on a much-needed holiday, be careful you don’t advertise to a clever thief that you’re away. Here are the key signs thieves look for which signal you’re away and some simple steps you can take to outsmart them.
1. You’ve told everyone on social media you’re going away. We understand. Everyone gets excited about going on holidays. But don’t feel you have to let everyone know where you are and what you’re doing all the time. That innocent insta story, Tik Tok video or Facebook post, might just let a thief know that you’re away from home. And if you haven’t tightened up your security settings, or aren’t super careful about what you post where, often it won’t take much for them to find out where you live. Tip: You never know who’s seeing your social updates. So, make sure you strengthen the security settings on your posts and limit the info you share. If you really want to share your holiday adventures with your family and friends, wait until you’re safely back home. 2. Your house is totally dark when it shouldn’t be. A home with no lights on in the evening, is like a bat signal telling people your house is empty. And if there’s not even any light coming from a TV or computer screen, it’s a pretty sure bet for a thief that you’re not home. Tip: Most people have a nightly routine so try to find a way to continue that to some degree when you’re away. Use timers on lights and TVs so that they turn on when it gets darker and off around bedtime. Install motion sensor lights outside above the front entry, driveway and garage and invest in some solar lights in your yard that come on when it gets dark. 3. Your mailbox is overflowing. This one’s a no-brainer. If you’re mailbox is overflowing with junk mail or unopened letters and bills, or there are newspapers piling up on your front lawn, it’s a sure sign you’re away. Tip: Arrange with Australia Post to have your mail held at the post office or redirected to someone you trust, and put a “no junk mail” sign on your mailbox, even just for the days you’re away. Or ask a trusted neighbour to empty your mailbox for you every day.
Tip: If you have a garage, get into the habit of parking your car in it and keeping it locked. If you don’t have a garage, asking a trusted neighbour to occasionally park in your driveway or in front of your house while you’re away, may thwart of potential thief. 6. Your household is too quiet. Whether it’s a lawnmower, a TV, a radio, excited kids, noisy pets, video games, music, power tools or visitors, there’s usually some sort of noise coming from most households at certain times of the day. So, if your house suddenly falls silent for a few days or weeks, or someone rings your doorbell and there’s no answer, it may let a thief know you’re not home. Tip: If you have smart appliances, or they have timer functions, set radios or TVs to turn on and off at varying times of the day. Radios set to talk stations are particularly good. Investing in a motion sensor smart camera, or a video doorbell, that sends notifications to your smartphone, can also help fool a thief that you’re at home. Some allow you to view the video in real time and even have a conversation with whoever’s at your door, even if you’re hundreds of kilometres away. Before you head off Be sure to incorporate home security into your holiday preparation. Before you head off: • Download our free Home Security Holiday Checklist to make sure you’ve all avenues covered. • Register your absence from residence with Victoria Police. Once you submit this form, your local police station will be notified and they may be able to increase patrols in your area while you’re away or notify your emergency contact if something happens. Be sure to let them know if you return early. • Ask a trusted neighbour, friend or family member to keep an eye on your place while you’re away and do regular checks.
4. You’re not keeping to your normal schedule. Some thieves will canvass a neighbourhood for a few days and watch the comings and goings to learn residents’ routines. They’ll then use this info to determine when to target your home. So, if you’re house has less activity than usual – or no activity at all – they’ll realise you’re not there. Tip: Try to arrange someone to house-sit for you or ask a trusted neighbour or family member to keep an eye on your place. See if they’ll help make it seem like someone is home by occasionally parking in your driveway, turning on a radio or TV, opening and closing blinds, mowing your lawn and putting your bin out on garbage day. Also try mixing up your routine every now and then to keep people guessing. 5. Your car isn’t where it’s usually parked. If you always park your car where it can be seen by passersby, such as in a carport, driveway or on the street, and then it’s suddenly not there for several days, it’s a good indicator that you’re away. Christmas and School Holidays Best wishes for Christmas and the holiday season. Trust it’s a good one. Here’s a few thoughts for families as we tackle the six weeks of school holidays. The summer school holidays are a great opportunity to do some special things with our children that we often don’t get the chance to do at other times of the year. Traditionally it’s a time to get away and have a holiday but I know that doesn’t work for everyone. It's been affectionately stated that children spell love, T-I-M-E. Children seem to demand all our time, resources and more. And it’s exhausting! But the dividends are marvellous. Rich and rewarding experiences involve interaction, sharing and talking – opportunities to laugh and connect with other family members. Some suggestions for having a rich school holidays – see how many you can do:

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB
In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation. You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop. We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town. SPIRIT EXTENDS MAJOR PARTNERSHIP WITH TAC, ANNOUNCE GEELONG HOME GAMES The Bendigo Spirit are delighted to have the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) driving the team forward once again as a major partner this 2023-24 Women’s National Basketball League season. The Spirit’s three-year partnership extension with the TAC is integral to highlighting the importance of road safety, particularly on country roads. The partnership will see the Spirit play a key role in sharing the TAC’s road safety messages, including a variety of content with Spirit players. Thanks to the partnership, the Spirit will be heading down to Geelong for their Round 7 clash against Adelaide Lightning on December 15, and again in Round 10 to take on reigning champs Townsville Fire on January 7. In both games, the Spirit with wear specially designed jerseys featuring road lines inside a yellow sash.
“We spend a lot of time on the road, both during the pre-season and regular season, so keeping safe on the road across regional Victoria and beyond is something we’re passionate about as a team.
The TAC’s Chief Executive Officer Tracey Slatter said the TAC was proud to support the women’s basketball team with the partnership allowing us to engage directly with regional Victorians on the road safety issues that impact them most.
The crowd-favourite TAC blimp is also back for the 2023-24 WNBL season.
“The TAC also have a strong commitment to all-abilities basketball programs in the region in a further sign of our brands aligning.”
“It’s an unfortunate reality that people travelling on regional roads are more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash,” Ms Slatter said.
“We are rapt to have the TAC’s support once again this season as we look to promote the importance of road safety on country roads together,” Bendigo Spirit General Manager of Operations David Ingham said.
There will be all-abilities curtain-raisers ahead of both Geelong games, as well as various clinics run by Spirit players and coaching staff across Bendigo and Geelong.
Additionally, the TAC’s branding will be prominent at both home games at Red Energy Arena and on the road, with their logo to be proudly displayed on the Spirit’s home and away uniforms and oncourt signage.
“This partnership means we can work with the basketball community to ensure the players, team members and spectators all have road safety front of mind as they travel for games.”

“JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH”: AUSTRALIA CALLED OUT AFTER FORCING BOLAND TO MISS BBL CLASH
Former Australian all-rounder Simon O’Donnell agrees with Melbourne Renegades coach David Saker who had a dig at Cricket Australia for ruling Scott Boland out of the BBL season-opener. Boland, who was selected in the 14-man squad for the Melbourne Stars for their clash against the Brisbane Heat on Thursday night, won’t play in the fixture with Cricket Australia putting the bowler on ice in case he plays in the first Test against Pakistan in Perth. On top of Boland likely missing out on Test selection next week, Saker feels that the Victorian should be playing in the competition with four overs of bowling at most unlikely to affect him. Saker also called for more consistency and transparency on when Test players can and can’t play BBL, all points O’Donnell agreed with. O’Donnell believes resting such players weakens every level of cricket and hopes the sport’s governing body in Australia finds a happy medium. “Four overs is certainly not going to kill him,” O’Donnell said on SEN Breakfast. “Cam Green didn’t bowl on the first day of the Prime Minister’s XI, I don’t know whether he’s carrying a slight injury. But I just hope that’s not being managed.
“Cam Green as a young cricketer should be saying, ‘Give me the pill. I want to try and get a four-for here and get my name back in contention for the Test side’. “The other aspect that makes the water murky is there’s no red-ball cricket now until the end of January for anyone to impress on a domestic level. “This filters down not just with Cricket Australia and the Big Bash, this filters down to state cricket and club cricket. Every aspect of cricket is being weakened by these guys being constantly rested under medical advice.
“It seems ridiculous to me that he cannot make the choice to go and do that. There are too many examples of this going too far. “People say, ‘Get up to the modern times or whatever’, but look, the bottom line is cricketers have got to play cricket. “Yes, I think there is a load limit, but this is taking the load limit to ridiculous levels and the people making a decision on whether Scott Boland plays or not are the wrong people making a decision on whether he plays or not.
“We’ve got to find a happy medium here because it’s just not good enough.”
“He should be able to play and bowl 24 deliveries in that match and be part of promoting cricket as a high-profile cricketer in this country.”
O’Donnell also believes it’s ridiculous that Boland can’t pick and choose himself how much cricket he wants to play.
Boland will hope to be selected for the first Test against Pakistan in Perth which begins on December 14.
While he understands that pace bowlers should have load limits, he thinks Cricket Australia are taking it to “ridiculous levels” when it comes to stopping players from competing in the game’s shortest format.
MORE IN CRICKET
“This is a classic example, Scotty Boland is paid to bowl a cricket ball,” O’Donnell said. “He’s being asked to bowl four overs, that’s 24 deliveries maximum and field for another 16 overs or be subbed out and sit down if need be.

“SHOULD BE TOO GOOD FOR THEM”: TRAINER VERY KEEN ON EARLY CHANCE AT BALLARAT CUP DAY
Punters have been tipped into a hot favourite in the first race on Ballarat Cup day to kick off Saturday metro racing. Ballarat plays host to a 10-race card this weekend, with the feature, the Ballarat Cup, to be run at 4:20pm AEDT. Trainer Calvin McEvoy, who trains in partnership with dad Tony, says his threeyear-old filly Sunset Dreaming can get the chocolates in the Eureka Stockade, the first race on the card. Coming up a $1.70 favourite with Sportsbet, Sunset Dreaming is backing up

across the road and if she does, I think she should be too good for them.”
“She’s come through the race really well,” McEvoy told SENTrack’s Giddy Up.
The McEvoys train out of a base adjacent to the Ballarat racecourse.
“She hits a flat spot in her runs and that would suggest the recipe of dropping back in trip on a seven-day backup might not be the right one.
McEvoy also gave a good push for Blue Stratum (Randwick Race 5), Arabian Summer (Ballarat Race 2) and Give Giggles (Ballarat Race 3).
“But she’s the highest rated horse in the race, we think she’s a really good filly. The blinders going on I hope gets her out of that flat spot and she just needs to handle the seven-day backup, walk

THE TRICKS COLLINGWOOD USED IN GRAND FINAL THAT BRISBANE WEREN’T EXPECTING Brisbane veteran Dayne Zorko wants the Lions to take a leaf out of Collingwood’s book in 2024. The Lions were defeated by four points by the Magpies in last year’s Grand Final and Zorko was impressed by a few tricks Collingwood threw at them in the big decider. While Zorko is happy with 99 per cent of Brisbane’s game style, he says they’ll focus on gaining that extra one percent by adding a few moves to their playbook.
SPORTS NEWS & EVENTS He referenced Collingwood’s willingness to throw Nick Daicos forward and Brody Mihocek back at stages throughout the Grand Final as what the Lions could try and emulate this campaign. “I think we’re just probably missing a couple more tricks,” Zorko said on SENQ Breakfast. “It is something that we, as players, identified and the coaching group identified that we could do throughout games that the opposition team hasn’t necessarily seen. “I think we saw that in the Grand Final with Collingwood. They did a couple of moves that I certainly hadn’t seen them do.
“I think they played Nick Daicos as a forward and he came around and played at halfback or he just floated and did his own thing. Brody Mihocek went back as an eighth defender at times to win the ball back. “Then they just used the ball so well going forward and almost made our spares null and void.” Zorko says the Lions will begin trialling throwing players into new positions in the next six to eight weeks to see what works ahead of the 2024 season. “There are little things there that I think that we can pick up on and we can bring out and use,” Zorko said.
DECEMBER 2023 “There’s no doubt, fundamentally, our game plan is in a really good position, but we certainly do need to tweak it. “Whatever that looks like, we’ll probably discuss over the next six to eight weeks as pre-season goes on. “I think that’s our x-factor and that’s where we’re going to get it from because individually, we have a lot of talent on our list. “But we do need something else just to sort of push that one percent further.” Brisbane will hope to build through a strong pre-season before they host Carlton in an Opening Round clash at the Gabba on Friday, March 8.
Plenty of criticism has been directed towards manager Tony Gustavsson who opted to play an inexperienced team in the first match who went on to lose 5-0. In the second friendly, Gustavsson only used the one substitute across the match which raised some eyebrows.
ARE THE MATILDAS READY FOR INCREASED SCRUTINY?
Gill admitted she found Gustavsson’s tactics bizarre but ultimately, she believed he was the right person to lead the Matildas through this next phase. “We definitely could’ve seen some changes a little bit earlier,” Gill said.
The Matildas succumbed to their second straight loss to Canada 1-0 as their 2023 campaign ended. The Matildas were arguably the biggest story in 2023 following their remarkable World Cup run which saw them reach the third-place playoff. 11.5 million Australians were tuned in to watch the Matildas’ semi-final against England which shattered TV viewing records. However, the recent results against Canada have drawn wide criticism on the team from former players such as Robbie Slater. With a massive increase in the amount of eyeballs on the Matildas, Channel 10 football commentator believes the team must be prepared for an increased level of scrutiny. “It’s been developing for this team over the last six to 12 months because it’s right, they haven’t had the eyes and attention on them previously. “Whether or not they are ready for it, as human beings you are never truly ready for anything.
“When you hear criticism, it takes some time to absorb it and reflect. “These girls are professionals though and they would be the first to put their hands up and admit they had a bad game. “There’s not much finger pointing at the team because they know (they have underperformed). “It was of course disappointing across both games that were either individual mistakes or collective. “They have plenty of eyes on them that they have never had before.”
“Some of the starting 11 looked really tired whereas Canada used their subs really well. “Gustavsson will wear the heat for the decision. “I don’t think it’s cause for concern after what has been a really big year.” The Matildas have played their final fixture for 2023. The team will next play two Olympic Qualifiers against Uzbekistan in February.

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards. This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards. There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

poppy kettle playground
www.findgeelong.com.au
Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jampacked with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer. The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net. The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

www.findgeelong.com.au
The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong. The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars. The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away. Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront. Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve. Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas. The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground. The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy! Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water. Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views. Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

AGED CARE

CONDITION OF RELEASE CONDITION OF RELEASE - RETIREMENT Superannuation benefits are generally preserved, meaning they cannot be accessed either as a lump sum, or be used to commence an income stream, until a condition of release has been met. The superannuation legislation provides for a number of conditions of release, depending on a superannuation fund member’s personal circumstances. The Fact Sheet considers the retirement condition of release. PRESERVATION AGE The retirement condition of release is met when a member retires from the work force after reaching their preservation age. Preservation age is based member’s date of birth. Date of Birth
on
the
Preservation Age
WHAT CONSTITUTES RETIREMENT? The retirement condition of release differs depending on when retirement actually occurs. RETIREMENT BEFORE TURNING 60 Where a member of a superannuation fund ceases to be gainfully employed before they reach their 60th birthday, retirement is taken to have occurred where: a b
They have ceased to be gainfully employed, before they turned 60, and They have no intention of becoming gainfully employment again on either a part-time or fulltime basis.
Both conditions need to be met for the condition of release to be satisfied. Part-time employment is gainful employment or self-employment of between 10 and 30 hours per week, whereas fulltime employment is more than 30 hour per week. Retirement before reaching age 60 has an element of permanency around future employment. That is, to have met
the condition of release, a member must intend never to become gainfully employed on a part-time or fulltime basis in the future. However, seeking to become gainfully employed in the future for less than 10 hours per week is acceptable. There may be other circumstances where a member genuinly has no intention of becoming gainfully employed again in the future however circumstances may change. While the retirement condition of release prescribes there be no intention of resuming gainful employment, this intention is tested at the time the declaration of retirement is made. RETIREMENT FROM AGE 60 Where employment ceases on or after reaching age 60, the requirements are simplified. A member aged 60 or older is taken to have met the retirement condition of release when an arrangement under which they were gainfully employed (or self-employed) has ceased, since they turned 60. Where a member ceases gainful employment after turning 60, it is not conditional upon them not re-entering the work force. If fact, a member aged 60 or older may cease working with an employer one day, and commence employment with a new employer the following day. Furthermore, where a person aged 60 or older has more than one employment position, merely ceasing one of those positions is sufficient for the retirement condition of release to apply to all superannuation benefits that have accrued to that point in time. RETIREMENT PRIOR TO AGE 60 BUT REQUESTING RELEASE OF FUNDS AFTER TURNING 60 There will be occassions when a member ceases to be gainfully employed before turning 60 years of age but they may not seek to access their superannuation benefits until after their 60th birthday. In such a situation, the date the most recent employment arrangement ceased is the one that is applied. If the member had last ceased to be gainfuilly employed before they turned 60, they will need to not only have ceased to be gainfully employed, but also have had no intention of becoming gainfully employed again.
December 2023
Fact Sheet However, if they had retired before turning 60 but had resumed gainful employment of a part-time or a fulltime basis, and subsequently ceased that employment arrangement after turning 60, the cessation of the second employment arrangement will be take as the trigger to satisy the retirement condition of release. ONCE UNPRESERVED, ALWAYS UNPRESERVED When the retirement condition of release has been met, a member of a superannuation fund should inform their fund they have met the condition of release. This should enable their preserved benefits to be classified as unrestricted non-preserved benefits. Once a benefit becomes unrestricted non-preserved, it will retain that status into the future even though the member’s circumstances may subsequently change and they may re-enter the workforce. Individual superannuation funds may require proof that employment has ceased (e.g. a separation certificate from the employer), or they may rely on a signed declaration from the member. When benefits become unrestricted non-preserved, future investment earnings and future contributions will be preserved. For future benefits to be released, a subsequent condition of release will need to be satisfied. It is therefore possible that even though a condition of release has been met, and the member’s benefit has become unrestricted non-preserved, their superannuation account may include a subsequent preserved benefit. CAUTIONARY NOTE There will be times when members may wish to access their preserved superannuation benefits and may be tempted to contrive an arrangement in order to satisfy the retirement condition of release. Any arrangement to circumvent the preservation rules should be avoided. In the event that preserved superannuation benefits are accessed illegally, the member’s tax assessable income will be increased by the amount withdrawn, and will be taxed at their marginal tax rate. Significant penalties also apply to promotors of schemes designed to facilitate the early release of superannuation benefits.
