OUR NEWSPAPER The Find Manningham was establish in 2019 for the purpose of bringing together everyone in the community in one place. Our core focus is to support all Not-For-Profits in the region by providing NFP’s with FREE advertising and helping them raise funds for their respective organisations. A core group of business owners attend the Find Network luncheons held once a month to discuss the paper and how best to make it even better for the local community. The Find Manningham has a strong editorial focus and is financed predominantly by the business community.

ALL THINGS MANNINGHAM The City of Manningham is a loacl government area in Victoria, Australia in the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Maanningham had a population of approximately 125,508 as at the 2018 Report which includes 27,500 business and close to 45,355 households. The Doncaster and Templestowe Council administered the area until December 15, 1994.

Borders close as cases increase. Not the 2021 start we were all hoping for. By Warren Strybosch

We were all hoping for a COVID free 2021 but that hope seems to have been dashed by the arrival of a handful of international travellers who were carriers before entering the country. New South Wales was the first to be impacted and this does not look to be slowing down. Now, Victoria has new cases of COVID, likely from those travelling from NSW. As cases have started to increase, boarders have started to close down. Holidays have been thrown into disarray and people are now concerned once again about the year ahead and how this will impact their future livelihoods.

Whilst we will continue to provide relevant information about the current events, we will endeavour to ‘Find’ some good in the everyday things with the hope of encouraging you through these stressful times. We are here to help you and everyone in our local community; whether it be via our fundraising initiatives, through the upand-coming Not-For-Profit events that will be advertised here for free, via our Find Network events, or simply by providing local relevant content about our local community. From all of us at Find, we wish you the best for 2021.

Renewed Call for JobSeeker Increase By Robyn Wuth (Australian Associated Press)

Welfare groups are calling for a permanent increase in JobSeeker payments to bring people above the poverty line as the federal government moves to reduce COVID-19 benefits. The Morrison government plans to lower the JobSeeker unemployment supplement by $100 a fortnight from Friday, January 1, and the JobKeeper payment by $200 on Monday. The new rates will be $150 a fortnight for Jobseeker and $1000 for JobKeeper and are effective until the end of March. The Australian Council of Social Service says the move will see vulnerable people trying to get by on $50 a day. The agency has called for a permanent increase of JobSeeker to $65 a day to bring people above the poverty line. “As 2021 begins and everyone tries to put 2020 behind them, people without paid work will be trying to get by on just $50 a day, which simply isn’t enough to cover housing, food, transport and bills,” ACOSS CEO Cassandra Goldie said. “The number of people on JobSeeker doubled to 1.5 million during the pandemic and is expected to rise still more when JobKeeper ends in March.”

JobSeeker is scheduled to revert to its pre-coronavirus rate of an “unliveable” $40 a day, and the Youth Allowance will be $33 a day, Dr Goldie said. “People and the economy need security to be able to rebuild – virtually every dollar of the coronavirus supplement goes straight back into the local economy, helping to keep other people in employment.” The federal government has always said the increased payments were a temporary measure which began in March during the nationwide lockdown. They have been extended in staggered reductions.

Federal Labor warned it is too early to reduce the payment. “We are not out of the woods yet with this pandemic and the economic effects, they (are) reverberating around the economy, especially in regional towns and suburbs where there is a lot of casual workers who have borne the biggest brunt,” Labor’s Bill Shorten told Nine’s Today Show on Tuesday. “For the less well off, we shouldn’t be cutting their circumstances at this point in time.” “The government should reconsider it.”

Are your tax affairs in order? ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

A new year, a new beginning. Let this year be the year to get your tax affairs in order. Currently, I am on holidays after a very busy 2020. I am sitting in the common room of the caravan park trying to decide what to write for my first article in 2021. To be honest, I am finding it hard to get focussed – I would rather be in the sunshine or having a swim in the river. Rather than providing some informative accounting information, I thought I would simply reflect on 2020 and provide some thoughts regarding tax in general. 1. I am still finding some business clients are using their personal accounts for business use. It is important to set up a business account and obtain a business credit card and to separate your personal expenses from your business expenses. Even if you are a sole trader this is still relevant. Keep your business transactions separate helps you to understand how your business is going. 2. When choosing a business name, make sure you check the domain name is available, that the name can be registered with ASIC and that there are no similar trademarks in place. You don’t want to set everything up to find a letter from a trademark attorney asking you to change/close down your business.

3. Make sure you put aside funds to cover your BAS and PAYG obligations. Don’t get caught out and start building up a debt with the ATO. This will impact your ability to borrow funds in the future. Lenders won’t to know you are meeting all of your responsibilities. 4. Ask your accountant if you have any outstanding returns that need completely. It amazes me how many times I take on a new client to discover they have outstanding tax returns from previous years. 5. Consider using appropriate bookkeeping software. Even if you just starting a new business, I would encourage you to start using bookkeeping software straight away. I tent to find that those clients who use appropriate bookkeeping software tend to grow their business faster than those who do not.

4 Tips On Writing Web Pages ACCREDITED EDITOR By Susan Pierotti

A website is almost an essential for all businesses nowadays. Even if it is just one landing page, it somehow legitimises your business when people are searching for the service or product you offer. There are many components on a website that convert seekers into customers. The first thing people notice is how what it looks like. Think of your website design as a shop window that persuades potential buyers walking down the street to stop and investigate what you have to offer. However, what triggers people to buy from you website is the content – what you have written on it. Have you heard the saying: ‘Content is King’? It’s true. When I started my business many years ago, I was told I’d need a website. I found a web designer who captured the essence of what I was doing, I hired a web developer to set it up, I learned about SEO and so on. However, the site wasn’t ready to launch until I wrote the content. Being a newbie, I wrote what I thought was really engaging stuff – full of facts, interesting tips, proving why I was the go-to person in my industry. I wish I could tell you that hordes of people found my site so irresistible that I was flooded with work offers. I waited as the weeks and months went by, wondering why no one clicked on. My content was interesting (well, I thought so…!) – but it was irrelevant! A good friend told me how to organise my content better. Here are his 4 tips:

1 Interrupt People trawl through the internet, looking at up to ten or more sites a minute. Sometimes they are on the hunt for something specific, others are just getting ideas. Your content needs to interrupt their train of thinking with something unexpected, eye-catching, even startling.

Here is a trap that many businesses, especially new ones, fall into. They promote themselves. They explain every process they offer, they describe every widget they sell. Amazingly, potential customers don’t want to know that yet. They all have one question, and one question only, in mind: Can this business solve my problem?

For instance, when I wrote the content for my Book Editing page, I could have devised a title focused on price packages, content or customer service. Instead I headed it: Making your book readable, marketable and sellable.

You’ve heard of ‘features, not benefits’? Now you need to show the features of your service will benefit them. You don’t need to go into masses of details – you don’t need to convince yourself! Again, just put yourselves in their shoes.

That revealed a ‘wow’ factor about books that most authors don’t think about when looking for an editor, but which taps into the fear of their book possibly being a failure.

For instance, if you have water pouring from a gap in your ceiling, you don’t want to know the latest spanner that the plumber owns. You want to know that they are available now, how long it will take them to do the job and what they can do to prevent it happening again.

2 Engage Here’s where you need to hook the reader. Forget the facts – tap into their emotions. Most of us don’t know who looks at our websites, so how do we know what people are feeling when they check us out? Simple – put yourself in their shoes. If you are a business owner wanting a newsletter, what problems do you think you would like someone else to solve? It’s usually time, expertise and money. That’s why I wrote the following: Make it easier for your customers to choose you! 3 Educate So your reader, and hopefully by now your prospective customer, is reading on. What comes next? What do they want to know?

4 Offer Make it easy for your potential customer to decide to choose you. Have a defined and clear call to action on every web page. 2020 proved to be the beginning of what looks to be an eventful decade. The signage industry, like many others, had to adjust to a changing community atmosphere where retailers, business owners and entire industries contemplated how to achieve success in a “new normal”. Retail Sales Surge, but outbreak Lingers

Retail sales surged by seven per cent in November, but border restrictions and other measures due to a Sydney virus outbreak could reduce retailers’ December joy. Victorians were largely responsible for the sizeable improvement on October trade, according to seasonally-adjusted data published on Tuesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Victoria’s retail sales grew by 21 per cent after many shops re-opened in late October from months of onerous coronavirus restrictions. Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions across the country also helped boost trade. Yet a coronavirus cluster originating in Sydney, which has spawned 90 infections, may limit sales at retailers’ favourite time of year.

Many holidaymakers have had plans scuttled as most states and territories require people from Sydney or NSW to isolate on arrival. The Western Australian government has blocked them from entering. There are also travel and gathering limits for the residents of Australia’s most populous city. CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman said the outbreak would be of huge concern to retailers. He said department stores and fashion outlets could have fewer visitors as people isolate. The weekly ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence index fell two per cent this week, and by more than five per cent in Sydney. NAB director of economics Tapas Strickland said if the outbreak can be contained, there is likely to be only a mild impact on retail sales.

A comparable example may be Adelaide, which had a three-day lockdown last month due to a virus cluster. South Australia had little change to its November retail sales result. The ABS did not provide a figure as part of its preliminary figures. Australian retail sales for the month were 13.2 per cent more than the same month last year. While this might seem remarkable given virus restrictions on trade, it is because the ABS retail sales survey does not include sectors hit hard by the pandemic such as travel and pubs and clubs. The bureau will publish its final monthly estimate for November on January 11.

All Green Lights Ahead for Coranavirus Jab By Daniel McCulloch (Australian Associated Press)

There appears to be nothing but green lights ahead for a national coronavirus vaccine rollout early next year. Health Minister Greg Hunt is not expecting any more setbacks after being forced to dump a vaccine trial at the University of Queensland. Mr Hunt expects to have early assessment of two leading vaccines – one from Pfizer and the other from AstraZeneca – by the end of January. Australian regulators will then be asked to give the drugs the tick of approval, putting the national rollout on track to begin in March. Mr Hunt spoke to the global chief executive of AstraZeneca at the weekend. The company is working to finalise issues including the size of the first vaccine dose and the time before the follow-up shot. “There are no red flags at this stage. There are only green lights,” Mr Hunt told reporters in Melbourne on Monday. The minister’s comments came as New Zealand committed to forming a travel bubble with Australia by the end of March 2021. NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the timeline was conditional on Australian government support and case numbers remaining low. Mr Hunt said Australia was ready to do its bit as soon as New Zealand was ready. “It’s good for the economy, good for our airlines and it’s good for both countries,” he said. Meanwhile, the mental and emotional toll of coronavirus on Australians appears to be easing, with fewer people feeling nervous or overwhelmed.

A survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has shone a light on the hidden impacts of the pandemic. The survey followed up on wellbeing questions first asked in August, when Victoria was at the peak of its second wave and nationwide restrictions remained in place. Far fewer people were feeling restless or fidgety in November than when the questions were originally asked. There was also a significant drop in the percentage of people feeling nervous or that everything was an effort. The survey also revealed changes in the spending habits of Australian households. Australians uncomfortable spending time in large shopping centres because of coronavirus are increasingly turning to online sales. One in three people now prefer to shop online, the ABS has found. Two in five people say they feel somewhat uncomfortable shopping at large complexes due to coronavirus.

In another big shift towards online services, almost one in six Australians used telehealth services for medical appointments in November. State and territory governments continue to record very few cases of coronavirus, with all new infections linked to hotel quarantine. NSW recorded another three cases in hotel quarantine on Monday. State health authorities are treating 70 active coronavirus cases, with one person in intensive care. Most people (94 per cent) are being treated in non-acute, out-of-hospital care, including returned overseas travellers in special health accommodation. Victoria has recorded one more infection in hotel quarantine, with seven active cases in the state. South Australia reported its first COVID-19 case in more than two weeks – a man in his 40s in hotel isolation.

Scammers set to exploit coronavirus fears By Marty Silk (Australian Associated Press)

Scammers are set to take advantage of Australian fears of coronavirus and public efforts to contain the disease in the coming year. Australia and New Zealand’s national identity and cyber support service ID Care warns COVID-19 and deepfakes will be used in scams in 2021. ID Care analysts say cybercriminals will likely target the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in the first half of the year. Pharamceutical giants Pfizer and Moderna are already working with America’s Homeland Security department to prepare for vaccine scams. ID Care expects scammers to pose as health officials or government agencies to harvest personal data and use vaccine conspiracy theories in phishing scams. “This is likely to lead to an increase in phishing scams, with the intent of scaring people into clicking on harmful links,” the service said in a report. ID Care said the solution is not to open links in emails or reply to texts you don’t recognise and be careful about coldcallers asking for personal information.

Cybercriminals could also take advantage of public efforts to contain the virus through check-ins with QR codes. Scanning the codes at restaurants and venues has become common practice, but ID Care warns there are few legal rules for the technology or use of personal user data in Australia. “And when you think of the information stored on there – your name, address and phone number – this information could be a honeypot for cyber criminals,” the service said. “Then there is the additional risk those scammers are plotting new measures to implant malicious QR codes in businesses which will harvest the data entered.” Unfortunately, there is little users can do to protect themselves and there are few warning signs for people who have been targeted. ID Care said Australians will also need to be vigilant about deepfakes endorsing products or services in 2021. Deepfakes are realistic videos or audio recordings of politicians or celebrities that are actually computer generated. They have been used to sow confusion in the US and ID Care believes they could be used to trick Australians. The service warned deepfakes will get even more convincing in 2021, so people should always get professional advice before acting upon online videos of famous people.

“And don’t believe every video clip you see of a famous person, whether it be a celebrity endorsing cryptocurrency or a President giving a “speech” via YouTube,” ID care said. Meanwhile, established scams such as ransomware have morphed into more sophisticated and elaborate operations. Before this year ransomware attacks involved cybercriminals infiltrating networks of businesses, encrypting data and offering a decryption key for a sum of several hundred dollars. However, during 2020 scammers started targeting multinational firms, and rather than locking up data they threatened to publicly release it via the dark web. ID Care said it was a double extortion technique forcing businesses to negotiate or suffer the cost of data leaks and reputation damage. The service said many Australian firms have already been affected by this new style of ransomware attack and that will continue in 2021. “It’s the combination of making a big financial reward and relating low risk that has led to ransomware becoming a booming and viable business model for cybercriminals,” ID Care wrote. It advised firms to train their staff in cybersecurity so they avoid downloading malicious links from phishing emails.

Your library has a whole new look. While we were closed we have designed a new logo, built a new website and installed a new library management system. As with any large project there have been some teething issues and we are working to resolve them as fast as we can.

Restrictions Easing With restrictions easing, we are able to have many more people in the libraries. Social distancing requirements still apply, and everyone will be required to scan or log in for contact tracing. 2020 TA Coronavirus Supplement Payment Extended Again to March 2021 The Federal Government is extending the payment period again for Coronavirus Supplement to 31 March 2021. It was previously extended to 31 December 2020. However, during the extension periods the level of payment is falling from the original $550 per fortnight. Up to 31 December 2020 is new supplement is $250 per fortnight and this will be lowered to $150 per fortnight to 31 March 2021. The full Coronavirus Supplement amount is payable to the individual, provided they qualify for an eligible income support

NT COVID-19 Stimulus Package - JobMaker “Booster” Announced On 10 November 2020, the NT budget announced the JobMaker “Booster” wage subsidy for small businesses in the Northern Territory. This wage subsidy intends to run alongside the federal government subsidy, ensuring that employers will get $200 per week for any new hire during the scheme. This subsidy is on top of the other NT government stimulus packages announced and extended since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Payroll tax exemptions, deferrals and waivers are available for most businesses affected by the pandemic. For small and medium businesses in the Territory that can

AX UPDATES Accelerated Depreciation via Backing Business Investment Businesses with less than $500 million in aggregated turnover can accelerate depreciation deductions for new assets in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 income years. Accelerated depreciation rules for these entities have subsequently been superseded by new ‘temporary full expensing’ legislation in November 2020. However, the option to use accelerated depreciation continues. Accelerated depreciation is available for assets in the first year the asset would ordinarily claim a deduction. In the first year a deduction is allowable for 50% of the installed cost of the asset plus regular depreciation rates for the remainder. The Backing Business Investment measures are in concert with the extension of the instant asset write-off.

However, it may only be relevant for some clients until 6 October 2020, when the full expensing regime commenced. Small businesses using pooling can use a 57.5% write-off for assets purchased after 12 March 2020 that do not qualify for immediate write-off in the 2019-20 income year. Instant Asset Write-off - COVID-19 Tax Stimulus Package The instant asset write-off will be available for the majority of businesses during some part of the 201920 and 2020-21 income years. For purchases between 12 March 2020 and 6 October 2020, businesses under $500 million in turnover can get an immediate tax deduction for assets costing less than $150,000. In the purchasing time frame, the asset needs to be first used or installed ready for use by 30 June 2021. In the legislation, the update also extends to the low value pool for the 2019-20 income year. An entity with a small business pool balance of less than $150,000 will be able to write off the entire balance (up

Ruffey Lake Park is the green jewel in the Manningham crown and this draft masterplan outlines how we aim to preserve, enhance and encourage greater use and enjoyment of the park’s diverse natural environment and historic qualities.

Jackson Court pops with new park A colourful new pop-up park has emerged at Jackson Court to help reinvigorate the local economy and connect the community. Manningham Mayor, Cr Andrew Conlon said Council and the Victorian Government are investing $200,000 in the new park to make it a great space for everyone. “The pop-up park and activation at Jackson Court is designed to be an attractive, enjoyable space for people to come together, relax and enjoy,” Cr Conlon said. “In a COVID-19 safe way, people can stop for a while - reconnect with family and friends, have a coffee or a meal and give local businesses the boost they really need. The pop-up park is set up in the centre of Jackson Court as part of a Neighbourhood Activity Centre Renewal project and features arts projects and place-making activities. The space is fun and inviting with colourful chairs, bright

plants, large lighting.

“We received feedback from the community that they wanted the Jackson Court Neighbourhood Centre to be more inviting and friendly. We’ve listened and are investing in the future of this important community space. “We asked the Jackson Court traders, Discovery Group members and local artists for their ideas on making the popup park and dining area a colourful, vibrant space for all the community to visit. Some traders were concerned about the loss of car parking spaces to deliver this park, so we reduced the size of the park from the original plan. With movement sensors now installed, Council will be able to monitor the number of visits and parking to evaluate patronage and make adjustments as required. “We welcome feedback and ideas for making our outdoor spaces great.

People can share their ideas on how we can make Jackson Court Pop-Up Park event better at yoursay.manningham. vic.gov.au/jackson-court-pop-up-park Construction of the pop-up park began on Monday 23 November and will be completed by 1 December, 2020. The pop-up park will be trialled for five months with park use and feedback evaluated to ensure the park and activities meet the needs of the community. “Jackson Court is one of four temporary new pop-up dining spaces in Manningham designed to deliver support for our local business. “We will continue to work in partnership with traders and the community to ensure our public spaces add value and enhance the local neighbourhood vibe.” Other pop-up dining locations within Manningham include Templestowe Village, Tunstall Square and Macedon Square.

Engaging with our community a top priority Manningham Council is always looking for new ways to engage our community and in January will host a community forum on Zoom to listen to feedback about our Draft Community Engagement Policy. Recently appointed Mayor, Cr Andrew Conlon invites the community to attend the forum to discuss the Community Engagement Policy anf share their ideas regarding community engagement. “We’ve released our Draft Community Engagement Olicy and want to hear your feedback,” Cr Conlon said. “Engagement is at the heart of what we do at Manningham. The new 2020 Local Government Act makes engagement with the community even more important.

“Our forum on 13 January provides the opportunity for our community to review and discuss the Community Engagement Policy and to tell us how they want to be engaged. “As detailed in our draft Policy, from this year we will be undertaking deliberative engagement on our major strategic documents: the Council Plan, Asset Plan, Ten Year Financial Plan, Community Vision and any new or changing local laws. “Deliverative engagement is authentic engagement that require participats to critically consider information, community needs and perspective, and weigh up competing demands in order to determine preferences for resolving public policy questions.

DO RETIREES NEED A PROFITABLE HOBBY?

Today the concept of Retirement has lost its sharp definition. Today retirement is best described as those 25-35 years after we leave the workplace. And the related issue is that – for the first time ever since birth – we have to determine our own future. Which includes how best to generate some income to supplement the pension and the crumbs available from super.

We’ll need to keep working as long as possible, but if we can’t find a job later on, will the pension and super be adequate to maintain our lifestyle? The answer is obvious, so we need to create an income through some form of self-employment.

There is a growing realization that, as we pass age 65, a woman has a probability (i.e. a better than a 50/50 chance) of reaching age 93 while a man’s probability is to reach age 91.

Our superannuation nest egg will be inadequate to support our lifestyle indefinitely, and many of my articles over the years have included the benefits of having a “profitable hobby” in retirement.

These ages are when the average “estate event” is likely to occur. It’s becoming obvious that over half of us will be living well into our 90s.

We’re going to need additional income to be able to afford to visit the dentist, or to replace those worn car tyres.

And that’s a long time to be bored, especially if we’re on a meagre income. In October 2017, ASFA reported that around 50 percent of men age 60-64 had

And with a profitable hobby, you’ll find that your clients replace those friends that you lose along the way. Of course, even traditional hobbies - such as short story contests - will expand your mind and change your world and keep you stimulated. But they won’t generate an income for you. So let’s return to the issue at hand - the best solution to generate additional income as a senior is to take whatever hobby you have, and convert it into a “profitable hobby”. Not only will you have additional income, but you’ll also avoid other age-related issues – such as becoming invisible and irrelevant.

Some restaurant/Cafe/Coffe establishments will have additional terms and conditions on the page where the business is advertising their offer).

Present Find Card You are required to present your Find Card at any participating businesses if you wish to secure the discount or goods/service being offered.

Authentication Code & Customer Signature All Find Cards must display an Authentication Code and a members signature to be deemed VALID. If your Find Cards does not display your signature and the correct code, the business can refuse to provide the discount offer advertised. You will receive your Authentication code after registering your Find Card.

Valid Find Cards have four folds and contain six different categories. Valid Find Cards will have its Regions logo sticker placed in the circle at the back and has an Authentication code display in front of the Find Cards

NOT VALID

Find Cards that DO NOT display its Regions Sticker in the circle at the back and DO NOT display an Authentocation code in front of the Find Card are INVALID. They will not be accepted at any participating businesses. Also, your signature must be present. You may be asked to present ID to verify that Find Card belongs to you.
