When Australians celebrate the Christmas "holiday season”, we typically refer to the time frame from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day. But soon after, in numerous Asian nations, there's another big holiday that brings people together with friends and family; Chinese New Year!
findmaroondah.com.au
Chinese New Year
Sometimes referred to as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year is one of the most important and extensively observed holidays worldwide. Families gather on this colourful and joyous event to celebrate the start of the Chinese lunar year, reflect on the past and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. There are many traditions and practices surrounding Chinese New Year, offering an understanding of the rituals, symbolism, and festive mood that envelop this fortunate time. Chinese New Year is believed to have originated during the Shang dynasty's control in the fourteenth century BC. Its history is rife with folklore. According to one legend, peasants were assaulted at the beginning of each year by a monster known as Nian ("Year"). Red, bright lights, and loud noises were all things Nian feared. These were tools used by people to drive the beast away. A long, colourful dragon puppet is paraded through the streets as the centrepiece of celebrations during dragon dancing, which is popular throughout the nation since the dragon is a Chinese symbol of strength and good fortune. In addition, many extensively
clean their homes during the New Year's celebration to remove any unfavourable energy from the previous year. Firecrackers, fireworks, and red clothing and decorations are therefore common elements of celebrations to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the good fortune and prosperity of the new one. Money is handed to young people in vibrant red envelopes. Chinese New Year is also a time for feasting and family visits. This is a time-honored celebration that blends ancient traditions with modern
festivities. As families come together to share meals, exchange gifts, and revel in the vibrant customs, the spirit of renewal and hope permeates the air. Whether you're a participant or an observer, understanding the rich tapestry of traditions associated with Chinese New Year provides a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of this joyous occasion. As we welcome the Year of the Dragon, may it be filled with prosperity, good fortune, and the warmth of shared moments with loved ones. Gong Xi Fa Cai! - Wishing you a prosperous New Year!

How to find peace within PARENTING By Lesley-Anne Banton
The saying of peace and goodwill to all is bounded around at this time of the year, it suggests it’s something you have to do and give to others. What if this year you give it to yourself? At this time of year attention is often brought to who we don’t have in our lives, family disconnects and disputes and lack of what we don’t have. It can raise so many unhelpful thoughts, behaviour patters and feelings. Sometimes we feel forced, obligated or guilted into spending time with people whom we may not get along with, feel trigged by or don’t align with. This maybe family and or close friends but mainly seems to be family members and we just don’t know how to navigate it. The situation or the anticipation of the event can evoke frustration, anger, anxiety and resentment, but not inviting them and including them in family gatherings gives you feelings of guilt, obligation, selfishness and or shame. What can you do? Without diving too deep, take a step back for a moment and look at your family patterns, dynamics, conditioning and rules. Who did you need to be to fit in and be accepted? Who did
your sibling need to be to fit in and be accepted? What roles did you take on? What were your generational family patterns and dynamics? Now just because you can recognise and see where the behaviour, conditioning, roles and patterns come from this does not diminish what you have experienced, however it does help to give reason to it Next, look at what part you have played in creating and continuing the behaviour pattern you are apart of with the person. We have responsibility in our part- if you deny this from yourself you disempower yourself with the ability to change the dynamic and set and protect your boundaries, so be honest what was/ is your part? By owning and accepting your part and committing to create change you can and you will. By finger pointing and blaming you can guarantee there will be no change within you. Labels given to family members as an outcome of your birth does not make you obligated to them accountable for their thought’s feelings, actions or inactions or the need to seek their approval or acceptance of who you are, your true self at the core. If you removed their title (Mum, Dad, brother, cousin, Aunt) would you still have them in your life? What boundaries would you set? Who do you now get to become? By taking away the labels and expectations you can see the person more clearly, you can see yourself more
clearly. You can humanise the experience and perception of events to allow empathy to yourself and, possibly, to them. By dancing through these steps, you get to observe what comes up and comes to mind, it can help you see things from a different perspective. You now get to give the story you are telling yourself another meaning, a more helpful and empowering meaning. It helps you to detach yourself from an old unhelpful story you were telling yourself, it helps you to see the multigenerational unhelpful and sometimes dysfunctional family patterns and dynamics. You now get to express empathy, compassion and forgiveness to yourself for all you have experienced, for all the disempowering beliefs, thoughts, behaviours and patterns. For all the internal shame and guilt, you have put on yourself, you get to forgive and learn to love yourself more. You get to unearth your inner peace. Your inner peace is your gift to you, the gift of accepting where you are now with the wisdom of your strengths and resources that your experiences gave you. You give yourselves the ability to relax and enjoy this time of year on your terms.

SHOULD YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION BE TO ENSURE THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF YOU AND YOUR EMPLOYEES? Many businesses may have a reasonable handle on this, but the best systems in the world can be undone if the key elements are not effectively documented. How do you adequately substantiate that you have effective systems in place and that they are working? How can you measure and improve? How do you defend yourself when an employee has hurt themselves because of behaviours that are outside those that you have implemented? How can you see the competencies of employees? How can you determine when upgrades and additional training are required?

Setting Realistic Goals for a Great Year NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger
As we find ourselves in 2024, it's the perfect time to reflect on the past and look ahead to a fresh start. One of the most meaningful gifts you can give yourself is the commitment to a healthier and more fulfilling life. Along with the common goal of weight loss, think about embracing a lifestyle that nurtures your well-being. So, let's embark on this journey together, with a positive mindset. Define Your Why Understanding the reasons behind your health goals is essential for long-term success. Ask yourself why these goals matter to you. It could be improving your energy levels, reducing stress, longevity, or simply feeling more confident in your own skin. Your "why" will be your anchor during challenging times, reminding you of the greater purpose behind your journey. Set Realistic and Sustainable Goals While aiming high is commendable, it's crucial to set goals that are both achievable and sustainable. Break down larger objectives into smaller,
manageable steps. This not only makes your journey less overwhelming but also allows you to celebrate small victories along the way. Remember, progress, no matter how small, is still progress. Focus on Holistic Wellness Consider setting goals that encompass various aspects of your well-being. This includes physical, mental, and emotional health. Incorporate activities that bring you joy, whether it's practicing mindfulness, spending time in nature, or engaging in activities that fuel your passions. Create a Support System You don't have to go on this journey alone. Share your health goals with friends, family, or join a community with similar aspirations. Having a support system not only provides encouragement but also accountability. Surround yourself with positivity and individuals who uplift and inspire you.
that’s the case, I think that so many weight loss diets have failed you. They give great results for a few weeks, then you plateau, and find yourself hungry, so you stop. What if there was a way where food was really satisfying along the way? I’m not promising rainbows and unicorns here, there will be some temptations you will have to say no to, but it will be sustainable long term. As you step into the New Year, remember that your health journey is a personal and evolving adventure. Embrace it with the belief that you are capable of positive change. Here's to a healthier and happier you in the coming year!

Do I really need bug spray around my house and garden? NATURE & CONSERVATION
Daddy Long Legs spider. Image courtesy of Australian Museum
By Liz Sanzaro
Have you seen these inside you home? They are called lawn shrimp are not insects but amphipods related to true shrimp. They are about 5mm long with seven pairs of legs.
Ladybird larvae Eggs While this looks quite creepy, it devours aphids and then matures into the superb lady bug.
If you are game enough to leave the Daddy Long Legs to take up residence in the corners of your room you will find their web contains lots of tiny insects almost too small to see, but they have come into your house too. Along with flies, moths (that eat your clothes) and mosquitos, these are very helpful in your home and better than insecticide sprays which are toxic chemicals. Nature takes care of itself if you let it. These outbreaks are triggered by lots of heavy rain. no surprise that this year is a bumper year for lawn shrimp. They do no harm in the garden, living amongst and digesting leaf mould in your garden. While alive they are, pale brown to greenish brown, but turn pink when dead, they flip or jump when you disturb them in the garden and if conditions are right for procreation, they will appear by the thousands all at once for a couple days. Like all insects, there is a place for them in the environment. When the rain is too much, their bodies begin absorbing too much moisture, and they have to get away from it, which is when you find them inside your house. Earthworms do this too when it floods seeking higher, not so sodden ground. Sadly, with the foods recently in Qld, many of these insects will have been drowned, so food for bird life will be scarce, especially for Magpies and other ground foraging birds that live predominantly on underground insects and worms. These incidents of extreme climate events are cause for concern, not only for us humans, but for the loss of diversity to sustain other wildlife.
The common wardrobe moth which eats cotton, silk and wool most commonly, can be deterred by using cedar wood shavings, that gives off a nice smell, but the moths do not like it, also use lavender and cloves for the same effect. Outside you may have seen these eggs on stick like threads, these are the eggs of the lacewing
once hatched they look like this. In your garden they are beneficial, eating scale, aphids and whitefly, keeping your plants healthy. Another interesting larvae that bears no resemblance to the adult is the larvae of the lady bird.
consuming an aphid colony Once mature they eat aphids nectar and pollen. Making them great pollinators for your vegetable plants and a natural pest control insect. Like the red ones, both hibernate over winter hiding in pine cones or other tight safe places in the garden before emerging and laying eggs.
Hoping you have some warm weather over the holiday period, when you can investigate your garden to see what beneficial insects are sharing your garden.

WORKING TOGETHER
Ever wondered how many sporting clubs there are in the City of Maroondah. Football, Cricket, Basketball, Tennis, Netball, Lawn Bowls – the list goes on and on. And guess what – all clubs are seeking to increase their membership, increase the number of participating players, increase their revenue streams through sponsorship, social activities, membership fees – just to name a few. Just picture it – dozens of sporting club representatives trying to attract new sponsors, retain existing sponsors and creating benefits to showcase the reasons why companies should become a sponsor. Maybe it’s time to consider working together – time for non-competing sporting clubs to consider how they
can develop alliances that will assist in attracting new members, encourage sponsors to promote their products and services to more than one club and to give people the opportunity to take up a sport that may be more suitable to their skills. consider? Like many clubs some people decide that after giving it a try a particular sport may not be to their liking and they drop out. Where do they turn to? What other sport can they With sporting clubs working together it may open up new sporting challenges and provide opportunities for people to seek another club and take up a different sporting code. Just think about the benefits that a potential sponsor could receive if their business was promoted
by more than one sporting club. Attractive sponsorship rates, a wider variety of sponsorship benefits, a larger target market and the potential for greater participation with club members. Working together the non-competing clubs would be in a position to hold combined membership drives, conduct open days and undertake joint promotional activities. Think it has merit – think your club could be interested? The Ringwood Bowls Club is ready to look at working together with other sporting clubs and is keen to get the ball rolling. All it takes is a phone call and an initial meeting to discuss what needs to be done and how to go about it. JANUARY 2024 | FIND MAROONDAH

During the four-day challenge period, from 24 November to 27 November, a total of 592 observations were made in Maroondah of 284 different species, with local nature-lovers uploading their photos of wild plants, animals and fungi using the free iNaturalist mobile app. Of the 13 Melbourne metropolitan Councils that took part, Maroondah ranked 5th for the most species observed
and 8th for the most observations made, with 34 people making observations in Maroondah this year. Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Kylie Spears, said the data collected will help benefit our local environment and the wider community. “It was fantastic to see even more observers taking part in this year’s Great Southern Bioblitz. Whether you made observations through Council’s Nature Discovery activities or in your own backyard, your observations will make a difference,” Cr Spears said. “It was also exciting to see 36 new species added to Maroondah’s observations this year. These will join the growing database we have of Maroondah’s stunning biodiversity, which will help Council and local environmentalists, scientists and land managers better manage and protect it.” In Maroondah, the commonly observed
more species
included the Common Brown Butterfly, Pacific Black Duck, Australian Magpie and Prickly Currant-Bush. There were, however, a few unusual sightings too. These included the nationally endangered Gang-gang Cockatoo, seen in Croydon North, and the nationally vulnerable Grey-headed Flying Fox, which was seen in Heathmont. Other noteworthy sightings included the White-lipped Snake and a species of Burnet Moth, both seen in Kilsyth South. These observations serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment for the benefit of these unique and vulnerable creatures. You can view Maroondah’s database on iNaturalist.
