About the Find Maroondah By Warren Strybosch
The Find Maroondah is a community paper that aims to support all things Maroondah. We want to provide a place where all Not-For-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-andcoming events in the Find Maroondah for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.
We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findmaroondah) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Maroondah Team.

Will we see record snowfalls in 2022? By Warren Strybosch
The ski season started off with high expectations and predications are that 2022 would be the season for record snow falls. We saw Victoria’s ski fields covered in early-season snow that broke 22-year records but was that an early prediction of what is yet to come or just mother nature teasing us once again. A great ski season may still become a reality but so far, the season has been a mixed one, with high snow falls one week and then rain the next turning all the snow into mush. As at time of writing this article, Falls Creek had 80 out of 90 trails open, Mt. Baw Baw Alpine Resort only had 2 out of 17 open, Mt. Buller had 14 out of 61 open, Mt. Hotham only had 63 of its 100 trails open. Currently, most of the snow can be found at Mt. Buller. Personally, I am hoping that the best of the season is yet to come as I am heading up to Falls with the family in September. “In terms of getting snow this early and before Queen’s Birthday, it has only

happened twice in the last 50 years [on record].” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Matthew Thomas said the strong snowfalls were a result of a burst of cold air pushing over south-east Australia and high precipitation. Do You Have Forklifts Operating in Your Business? You Need an Effective Traffic Management Plan OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY By Mark Felton
WorkSafe Victoria has announced that a food service wholesaler has been fined $35,000 after a worker was struck by a forklift and seriously injured at a Dandenong South warehouse last year. C.C.B. Enterprises Pty Ltd pleaded guilty in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Thursday to a single charge of failing to provide a safe working environment, and a single charge of failing to notify WorkSafe immediately after being aware that an incident had occurred. The company was fined $35,000 without conviction. In April 2021, the worker was walking across the warehouse floor when a forklift operated by another worker reversed around a corner and struck him, running over his foot and leg. The injured warehouse assistant was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a compound fracture of his leg, multiple fractures of his foot, and muscular damage that required a skin graft. The employee suffered postoperative infections and has not since returned to work. The court heard that the company did not have in place a traffic management plan to separate pedestrians and forklifts, and that it was reasonably practicable for the company to have implemented clearly designated exclusion zones, pedestrian walkways and safety barriers. WorkSafe Executive Director of Health and Safety Narelle Beer said duty holders will be held accountable for failing to protect workers from the known risks associated with forklifts. "It's frustrating that forklift injuries are still so prevalent considering the enormous amount of guidance, information and regulation that occurs," Dr Beer said. "WorkSafe will continue doing everything it can to protect workers who work with or around forklifts through inspections, investigations and prosecutions." Employers using mobile plant such as forklifts should ensure:
•
•
• • • • •
A traffic management plan is in place for pedestrians and powered mobile plant and that it is reviewed and updated as appropriate. Pedestrians are separated from moving machinery and that an effective communication system between operators, transport contractors and ground staff is in place. Signage is in place and barriers are erected where appropriate. Visibility issues are identified and controlled, particularly if lighting is poor. Workers operating equipment have the appropriate high risk work licences, as required. Machinery and vehicles and regularly inspected and maintained by a suitably qualified person. Employees and health and safety representatives are consulted about health and safety issues.
Do you have forklifts operating around pedestrians in your business? Do you have effective traffic management plans in place? Are you adequately keeping your employees and yourself healthy and safe? Is your documentation
adequate? Often businesses have at least rudimentary WHS management systems, but documentation is poor. We assist business owners identify what they need to have in place, and then ensure effective systems and documentation are implemented. Checks are put in place to monitor effectiveness, to ensure that going forward they are sound and comply with the Act, and most importantly keep them and their employees informed, and healthy and safe. Learn from the birds – writing makes you smarter! If farmer A stored his grain in October in a warehouse down the river but buyer B didn’t need it till February, how was the grain storehouse manager to remember who had bought what and when, and how was he to differentiate farmer A’s grain from farmer C’s identical grain? As children do, he probably made a mark he would recognise on the grain jar to remind himself. As more varieties and quantities of grains came in, with more farmers and buyers, the storehouse manager’s marking system would need to become more sophisticated. Thus, writing was born.
ACCREDITED EDITOR By Susan Pierotti
In the leafy streets of Maroondah, we are fortunate to have songbirds that are not only beautiful in their plumage but their calls. Even during winter, you can hear the joyful carolling of magpies and the melodious call of the currawongs. Yet, when you’ve been woken up at sunrise by a screeching flock of corellas stripping your next-door neighbour’s tree, you may wonder why our, peewees and wattlebirds are classified as ‘song’birds! Songbirds are ones that produce ‘organised’ sounds. Tim Low’s book, Where song began, describes how biologists have discovered that all birds classified as ‘songbirds’ originated in Australia when it was part of Gondwanaland. While almost all living birds produce calls of some sort, welldeveloped songs are delivered mostly by the songbirds. Their highly developed vocal organs enable their sonorous though not all songbirds deliver a call that is recognised as melodious by humans! Though parrots and ravens are not classified as songbirds, they can be taught to repeat human speech, but generally, being able to mimic is almost completely restricted to songbirds, some of which (such as lyrebirds) excel in imitating the sounds of other birds or even environmental noises like chain saws and camera clicks.
Bird brain – big brain Songbirds and parrots also have a large brain mass and therefore many more neurons for their body mass compared with non-primate mammals. In other words, songbirds, ravens, crows and parrots have the largest and smartest brains of all birds on earth, comparable with humans who have the smartest brains of all primate species. The ability to have complex language is directly connected to a larger size of brain, possibly influencing its size. Compared with birds elsewhere, our native feathered flocks are more likely to live in complex societies and are longlived. Again, comparable to us humans! Parrots in particular have another ability no other birds have. The relatively enlarged brains in parrots especially is likely associated with their greater learning skills, including vocal learning, and enhanced foot and beak dexterity. Parrots can pick up objects in their claws, as can other birds, but only parrots use them as tools. Humans have opposable thumbs and fingers – that is, we can make a circle with our thumb and finger – and that also gives us the ability to use tools as well. From tools to alphabets Humans first used tools to kill animals for food and later for agriculture as the food supplies expanded. As surpluses were created from wheat, barley and other grains, trade developed. Because of trade, one of the most amazing explosions in human history occurred.
The first instances of writing found have been on clay bricks from the Middle East region. They are accounts of goods being transported down the rivers. From a mark to a highly evolved alphabet probably didn’t take all that long, but alphabets and other writing systems – Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese characters, for example – have lasted for thousands of years. Being able to record our belongings, thoughts and deepest desires is one thing that differentiates us from all other animals. It is what makes us truly human. It means we can avoid the mistakes of others, we can plan into the future, we can control our world. Writing makes us smart! Language, writing and building – they’re all connected. So when you hear the screech of corellas or the carolling of magpies, remember that we share singing, building and language and these make us the smartest of our species. HERITAGE & HISTORY By Russ Haines OAM
The year 1927! What an impressive year for a young person to come to reside in Ringwood. A town surrounded by trees, native and cultivated. Greenwood Avenue, to the juvenile mind, appropriately named because of the stand of lemon-scented eucalypts forming a guard of honour for children treading their way back and forth to the State Primary School. I’m sure the Greenwood family would forgive me! Tall dark pine trees grew in the school grounds casting slender shadows for play on hot summer days. Opposite the school's eastern fence, virgin bushland provided low-growing native scrub for daring young schoolboys to play cops and robbers in the extended lunch break. As the fast electric train rattled the last lap of its fifteen-mile journey from Melbourne downhill from Mitcham into orchard land, one could observe here and there the last remaining crops of apples, pears, or quinces in the autumn days of April. When my parents with family came from Warrnambool to occupy the timber residence in Bedford Road, there were plenty of trees at the rear where we gathered mushrooms after rain, played cricket, kicked footballs and rode borrowed bicycles. Mostly male companions seemed to drift their way into that paddock — the Wigley cousins from Wilana Street, the Falconer trio from Pitt Street and boys of the family Lobb in Campbell Street; pals were numerous. Trips into the City were memorable; father drove a neat 1927 Chevrolet and found available parking at the rear of Wesley Church, Lonsdale Street, a considerable distance from the CBD. The Duke and Duchess of York were guests of the Australian Federal Government for the Opening of Parliament House, Canberra, in May 1927, and with flags and cheers from the kerbside of Spring Street, crowds greeted the Royal visitors as they drove in their elaborate horse-drawn coach to the Victorian Government House. With a gracious smile and a waving hand, the smiling Duchess returned the applause. Her lovely toddler daughter (our present reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II) had been left to the care of grandparents and nannies in London. Our educators at Ringwood Primary School had planned that at least some students should be privileged to hear a broadcast of Canberra's Opening
AMONG THE GUM TREES Day, and so wireless sets were brought into some classrooms (probably hired from Stoney's!). In those pre-radio days many, like myself, had scarcely heard a broadcast: a small crystal set in our home had been put together by older brothers but the reception was poor and mostly uninteresting. From our school desks silence prevailed as we strained to hear static voices coming over the airwaves. Whether a 'valve' set or battery operated we had little idea of the workings inside the heavy wooden case, nor of the whereabouts of an aerial which must have been essential in those pre-plug-in days for electrical operation. However, with tourism trends in Australia to promote the Capital, school listeners would proudly identify with Opening Day if privileged to visit Canberra. In mid-year 1927, a rare birthday treat for me was to attend the screening of "Ben Hur", a silent film in black and white, at the ornate Capitol Theatre in Swanston Street. Roman chariots and armour-clad horseman in conflict provided spills and thrills to eye gate whilst dramatic musical and sound effects were created by Horace Weber at the console of the grand Wurlitzer organ. Another modern cinema theatre, the State on Flinders Street was under construction. Mr Woollacott had been commissioned to work on the decorative interior of walls and ceilings of "the State". He had come from South Africa with his wife and two daughters to their lovely home in Bedford Road, architecturally designed to trends in Johannesburg. Mrs Woollacott was attached to the Women's National League and teenage daughters Eveline and May included me in their support group on occasions of political interest. Government elections pending were an opportunity for public meetings and for candidates to present
policy speeches, and gatherings were eagerly attended by young and old. Though 21 seemed a long way off to reach voting age, it was no barrier to the minors in good attendance numbers who sat under the powerful oratory of Robert Gordon Menzies and he, with sharp wit, was more than a match for the hecklers who endeavoured to stir and disturb. From Ringwood's public platform at the Town Hall the elegant Mrs Clarence Weber, health and physical education promoter, charmed female voters in her bid to enter parliament. Mrs Woollacott and daughters happily integrated into Methodist church activities and their departure came all too soon. Grandparents Mr and Mrs Evans of Wilana Street, and their aunt Gwen (later becoming Mrs Dawes) felt their embarkation keenly. My knowledge of South Africa, its provinces, States, customs and population differences was cultivated and expanded in a short but interesting friendship. The State Education system demanded a set standard of learning at the completion of year six in primary school and the 'qualifying certificate' was awarded after assessment by the class teacher of a students' attitude to school work. It was an exciting announcement at the end of the school year (though I do not remember any presentation of Certificates!). The Ringwood Mail published results two months later. Twelve years hence many of those named would be enlisted for war service. Twenty years from 1927, following six years with Australian military forces one lad would be asking me to marry him. The five children of Jack and Eva Tann completed primary education at Ringwood School No 2997! From Eva Mclaren-Tann-Moore March 2004 JULY 2022 | FIND MAROONDAH

NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger
Homeopathy is based on the principle that your body has an innate ability to heal, something that drives the body to repair and restore, known as vitality. You only need to study the process of wound healing to understand that the body’s has amazing repair process. Just like using a dressing on a wound provides an environment that allows the body to heal, likewise, homeopathy stimulates the body’s own healing process. This is different to a nutritional product which provides the nutrients that the body uses in the healing process. For this reason, homeopathy can be used to treat most health issues, in most people. It is gentle enough to be used on children and they usually respond well, as their body will heal more efficiently due to increased vitality. Homeopathy is a gentle, yet powerful system of natural medicines based on the principle of ‘like cures like’. Substances that can cause ailments, can be used to treat that same ailment when diluted. For example, if you are stung by a bee, homeopathic Apis mellifica (bee venom) will relieve the bite. Whilst this may seem counter-intuitive, conventional medicine treats anaphylactic bee allergy with diluted bee venom injections. The homeopathic medicine does not need to be the same as the original substance, just ‘like’ it. Apis will help other bites that are painful, sensitive, and stinging. “The difference between a medicine and poison is the dose” - Paracelsus 1538 Whilst it might be hard to wrap your head around, we do know that excess of any one thing is not good for us, regardless of how good it might be, and that even paracetamol is fatal in high doses. Homeopathy uses highly diluted substances, some of which are toxic (such as bee venom), but due to the dilution process, they become safe and effective in treating disease. Homeopathic philosophy recognises that people are different, and just like some people spend a week in bed with a cold whilst others might just have a sore throat for a day, there are nuances to our individual healing process. It takes into account things that make the ailment feel better or worse, for example, do you feel better with ice on your injury, better with gentle movement, better if left alone, or better with rest. It is holistic, and a practitioner will look to find a remedy
What is homeopathy?
Whole Naturopathy has a large range of homeopathy is stock and can choose the best remedy for your unique signs and symptoms. that fits more than one body system. A remedy is easily confirmed as a good fit for the patient if it fits more than one symptom, such as perhaps a digestive issue, with something unrelated such as something in the eyes, or the emotions. Homeopathy began in the 1700’s by a German Doctor Samuel Hahnemann, and as this was a time before pathology testing and our modern understanding of disease, choosing the right remedy is based on signs and symptoms. Together with his medical students, Hahnemann set out to prove that the remedies work by testing them on multiple people, which was not commonly done in medicine at that time. Worldwide homeopathy is used by around 500 million people. In Europe it is prescribed by many doctors, but it is India where it is most commonly used, where homeopathic hospitals and homeopathic doctors form a large part of their medical system. Often to understand homeopathy, you need to try it yourself. A great place to
start is with Arnica montana (Arnica), the remedy for bruising. The mechanism by which homeopathy works is still not fully understood, although advances are being made in the areas of quantum physics and chemistry. For more details on this and for homeopathic research articles, go to www.hri-research. org/

ARCHITECT By Kathy Ismail
Heating bills have skyrocketed. There are several ways to pay less by retaining the heat. Your windows could be a contributing factor. Did you know that about 30% of a home's heating energy is lost through windows? A single pane of glass loses almost ten times as much heat as the same area of insulated wall. As heat rises and escapes, and cold air rises to fill the place of the warmer air, this can create draughts. So, let’s look at some ways you can minimise heat escaping through your windows.
findmaroondah.com.au
USE YOUR WINDOWS TO HEAT YOUR HOME
Type of window If you are doing a new build or renovating, consider the type of windows you can install, as they will affect how much heat you lose. Fixed, casement and awning windows are more heat-efficient than sliding windows. Fixed windows are ones that don’t open, casement windows opens outwards on a side vertical hinge and awning windows opens outwards from the top of frame. Shut the window Seems obvious, but are your windows completely sealed? Run your hand along the inside perimeter of your windows to check for cold air seeping inside or try holding a candle up to that area’s closest window and watch the flame. Does it flicker? If so, it’s likely that your windows have draughts. Attach foam tape weatherstripping around the interior perimeter of your windows to help make your home airtight. Measure each side of your window to determine the amount of weatherstripping you'll need. You can use adhesive-backed foam or tape weatherstripping that comes in a variety of widths that you can cut to fit your window measurements. Frames The strength of your window frames have a great effect on heat loss. The most energy efficient window frames are made from materials that won't transfer heat and cold, such as timber, fibreglass, uPVC or combination frames composed of composite wood products, such as particleboard and laminated strand lumber, and others mixed with polymer plastics. Although very strong and light, metal frames, including aluminium ones, conduct heat very rapidly, which makes
metal a very poor insulating material. To reduce heat flow, metal frames should have a thermal break -- an insulating plastic strip placed between the inside and outside of the frame and sash. Curtains Curtains, pelmets and blinds are one of the cheapest, most effective ways to keep your home warm, effectively reducing the loss of heat by up to 10%. Choose closely woven, thick curtains with special thermal linings and hang them above the top of the window, allowing the bottom edge to touch the window sill or the floor to completely cover the window. A pelmet effect can be as simple as draping a long scarf over a wooden curtain rod. Curtain tracks provide a return of curtain to the wall that creates a seal. Close as the sun goes down to keep heat inside and prevent heat escaping. Sunlight If you are planning a renovation or a new build, capture as much natural sunlight as possible by orienting towards the north, west or east the windows of the rooms you will spend most time in – the kitchen, your office, the lounge room and entertainment areas. These areas will not only be warmer but more inviting when the winter sun peeks through.
Double glazing If you are building new or replacing window glass, now is the time to invest in double glazing. Traditional windows contain just a single sheet of glass; double glazed windows are comprised of two sheets of glass separated by an insulating air gap. This air gap creates an additional layer of insulation, preventing heat loss while still allowing sunlight into the home. Double glazed windows are more expensive than single glazed but the initial set-up costs are offset by the savings that come from reduced energy use. Deciduous plants Placing thickly leaved plants outside a window is usually advised to cool a room. By planting deciduous ones that will shed their leaves in autumn, you will allow more sunlight to penetrate inside during winter. Commonwealth Games 2026 By Warren Strybosch
The Commonwealth Games were last held in Melbourne in 2006 but have also been held on the Gold Coast (2018), Brisbane (1982), Perth (1962), and Sydney (1938). In a Commonwealth Games first however, the games will not be held in just one location, but instead will be showcased in four regional locations around Victoria– Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland. This is a boon for these regions as they will receive a boost to their local economies with additional spending from the government in the lead up to the games. Community infrastructure will be improved and thousands of jobs will be created in the lead up to the games as well as during. Hamilton, Canada, hosted the first Commonwealth Games in 1930 with just 11 Countries, 59 events (6 sports) and
400 athletes. For Melbourne in 2026 we can expect in excess of 70 countries, 280 events and 4500 athletes. Expressions of interest are currently open for the inclusion of additional sports. International sporting federations in conjunction with Australian sporting organisations have the
opportunity to request that certain sports be included in the line-up. Depending on the outcome of this, other Victorian regional areas may have the opportunity to host some of these additional events. The cut-off date for these submissions is August 19, 2022.

Metcash declared a fully franked final dividend of 11 cents per share, up from 9.5 cents paid last year.
The IGA Supermarkets owner and distributor says net profit for the 12 months to April 30 rose 2.7 per cent to $245.4 million. Sales revenue for the full year were up 6.4 per cent to $17.4 billion, while underlying earnings jumped 17.7 per cent to $472.3 million.
IGA stores continue to gain market share from bigger rivals Coles and Woolworths as shoppers increasingly shift towards neighbourhood and local supermarkets.
Metcash shares rose sharply after Monday’s announcement and were up 3.4 per cent to $4.29 by 1205 AEST.
Metcash said total food sales rose 1.4 per cent to $9.5 billion while like-for-like sales in the IGA network increased 2.9 per cent.
Group chief executive Doug Jones attributed the record sales growth to “initiatives designed to further improve the competitiveness of our retail network, continuation of the local neighbourhood shopping trend, and the success of recent strategic acquisitions”.
The strongest growth came from Western Australia and Queensland. At its liquor wholesale arm, total sales increased 8.7 per cent to $4.8 billion, while earnings were up 9.8 per cent to $97.4 million.
Mr Jones has warned of external challenges in the second half of the year, including supply chain disruptions and flooding in the eastern part of Australia. He said food inflation is accelerating within the business, with about 60 per cent of its food and grocery suppliers having asked for price increases. Metcash said the strong growth momentum has continued, with food sales up 5.0 per cent for the first seven weeks of FY 2023, while hardware sales have jumped nearly 20 per cent and liquor sales rose 8.6 per cent.

Oh, the pain of interest rate rises By Warren Strybosch
I don’t know about you, but we are feeling the pain of all these interest rate rises, and I am not sure anyone, except the RBA, knows when they are going to stop. We were supposed to have had our renovations finished last year but it got pushed out to June and even now we continue to incur delays. This delay has resulted in us missing locking in our interest rate on the new home mortgage (currently the construction loan). We were supposed to have locked the rate in back in January for four years. So, not only has the renovations cost us more due to building supply constraints due to COVID, but we are now going to have to pay higher mortgage repayments over the next four years because of the unforeseen delays – we have missed the ‘fixed-rate’ boat. Yes, I can hear the “pffts”, and “put your adult pants on” from all those who had mortgages throughout the 1980’s. With the 30-year fixed mortgage rate reaching a pinnacle of 18.4 percent in October 1981 and seesawing down to the 9 percent range by 1986 and closing the decade at 9.78 percent, you might have reason to think we still have it relatively easy. But as my own children remind me when I start telling my war stories, ‘about when I was young’, that my life is not their life and that I need to have some consideration as to what they might be going through right now rather than being dismissive about it. So, hopefully all of you Baby Boomers, who have already paid off your mortgages, might be able to emphasize with those of us who still have one. What is happening with interest rates? On the 5th of July the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced at its monetary policy meeting an increase in the cash rate by 50 bps. It marked the second 50-bp hike in a row and followed the 25-bp hike in May, taking the official cash rate to 1.35 per cent, up from 0.85 per cent. The RBA board’s decision comes as inflation is expected to hit 7 per cent at a time when unemployment rates are low, household budgets are under pressure and global uncertainty remains.

Governor Philip Lowe anticipates that Australia’s inflation will peak this year before declining back down towards 2-3 per cent, driven by an increasing interest rate environment.
Let's take a trip back to the housing market of 1984 to see just how different buying a house was in the 80s versus today.
Higher interest rates will also help establish a more sustainable balance between the demand for and the supply of goods and services,” he said.
Australian home buyers today must save bigger deposits, borrow much more and face much larger repayments. This means more of their weekly income goes into housing costs today than in 1984.
Ironically, we are experiencing the same run-away inflation that occurred in the 1980’s due to high government spending, increased property prices and people still spending their money. As a result of increased inflation, interest rates continue to rise, and there is going to be a world of pain felt by a lot more people now compared to the pain that was felt in the 1980’s. Australians now are experiencing it harder The truth is that the average Australian is now purchasing homes that are worth way more than what they were worth in the 1980’s. In fact, the average Australian now is spending on average 10 times their annual earnings on their first home compared to the Boomers who paid 3.3 of their average annual earnings. The average Australia in 1984 could buy a home that cost 3.3 times their annual income. In 2022, it's 10 times what the average person earns in a year.
Australian buyers in 2022 now have to save much bigger deposits. Saving a deposit is one of the big challenges for home buyers in 2022. As prices have risen so much, the amount you have to save for a 20% deposit just keeps jumping up. This is a stark contrast. In 1984, a 20% deposit was 66% of a year's income. Today, it's 202%. It would take you just over 2 whole years' of income to save the same deposit. (Source: finder.com.au) Further hikes anticipated Further rate hikes are anticipated, and it is likely we will see rates increase by at least another 50-bp before the end of the calendar year. Even Brokers are expecting more rates rises to come.

Export restrictions push up food prices Dominic Giannini (Australian Associated Press)
Export restrictions in about 24 countries globally are pushing up prices and increasing food insecurity, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences.
“Export restrictions reduce the supply of food in world markets and increase prices, creating greater incentives for other countries to restrict exports,” ABARES said.
The latest ABARES Insights report showed food prices have increased 65 per cent in the past two years, and reached their highest level since October 2012.
“For this reason, widespread export restrictions have a negative impact on global food security and hurt the poorest people who are already struggling to put food on the table.”
Executive director of ABARES Dr Jared Greenville said there were lessons to be learnt from the 2007-08 food crisis. “Often when there is an increase in world food prices, governments respond by placing export restrictions on their own commodities,” Dr Greenville said. “The aim is to moderate domestic prices and ease the burden on their own populations, which is understandable in the circumstances.” But the report said the 2007-08 global food crisis showed export restrictions are detrimental to global food security, and provide “questionable benefits” to the domestic market.
The report found several factors are contributing to higher global food grain prices, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, poor growing conditions in major exporter countries, and the impacts of COVID-19. Tim Harcourt, chief economist at the University of Technology, Sydney, said experts have been warning export restrictions would push prices up and help with increasing domestic food security. “It’s what a few of us were predicting a few months ago, that we’re going to have a global food crisis,” Professor Harcourt told AAP.
He said the export restrictions have seen price increases to wheat, palm oil, maize and barley. “They (export restrictions) are going to hurt the poorest people who need the food, not just at home but abroad,” he said. The report concluded there had been an increase in the number of countries introducing export restrictions which could cause world prices to spiral higher. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates between 720 to 811 million people faced hunger in 2020, with high food prices making conditions even more challenging. Governments across Asia, Africa and the Middle East have introduced export restrictions in response to rising grain prices, in an attempt to ease their domestic food prices. “Removing export restrictions, or agreements to avoid implementing them in the first place, can help to ensure food is more available globally and increase the stability of food supplies,” Dr Greenville said.

Coffee driven COMMERCIAL COFFEE MACHINE By Ivana Smith
Dealerships Congratulations - you’ve got the sale! Mr and Mrs X have checked out all the car models you have in the showroom, they’ve done a test drive and now they’re ready to sign on the dotted line. Now what happens? You go into your office to prepare the paperwork and they sit around and wait … and wait. When Mr and Mrs X want to upgrade their car in five years’ time, what will draw them back to you? We all know the answer to that – a great customer experience! It’s the little things that count. So, instead of leaving them to cool their heels while you deal with documents for them to sign, why not give them a treat while they’re waiting. Something as simple as an awesome coffee could be the winning factor to get you the next big sale years later. It's so easy to install a coffee machine that produces high quality coffee in a variety of styles. No mess, no supplies to order, no machine maintenance required, no need for your staff to morph into the in-house barista instead of doing what they are paid to do. For less than a couple of dollars per cup, inclusive of all consumables, you could hire a machine that is equipped and run by the installer.
All you need to do is provide a power point and a space to set it up! Automotive workshops Six months after Mr and Mrs X have bought their car, they will need to take it for a service. Mechanics usually prefer cars to be delivered by 8.30 am which in winter means a cold, early start to the day. Why not install a coffee machine to provide a warm drink for your customers to cheer them up? They will probably appreciate you for the rest of the day. Talking with the mechanic before and after can take time and there may be a queue for paying the bill. Again, a quality coffee could be a selling point to gain and retain more customers in your automotive business. Your employees will love you for it as well. Driving schools If Mr and Mrs X are the parents of kids in their middle to late teens, they now face the expectation of them wanting to learn to drive. Mr and Mrs X don’t want their children to learn from a driving school that pick kids up from their homes. They have consulted and picked one, yours, that has premises where children can safely learn to drive off the main roads but in conditions that simulate real traffic. Have you thought of how stressed these parents can feel? Apart from the issues of safety, they are now confronted with their ‘baby’ growing up and entering the adult world. While they wait for their child to finish their driving lesson, as they are
musing on feeling older, why not soothe them with a surprise – a superior grade coffee with superb flavour or even a scrumptious hot chocolate. A coffee machine can easily be installed in a corner on a table. With cups, coffee, sugar and hot chocolate powder supplied, there’s never a need to run to the shops to stock up on products. The staff will not be required to clean up a mess of mugs in the kitchen. The machine will not break down as it will be constantly maintained by the installer. If you run or are employed by a car dealership, an automotive workshop or a driving school, do you operate your business near to a local café? If your premises are too far away for your customers to walk or drive to get a coffee, talk to a coffee machine supplier about the advantages a coffee machine could bring to your business. For advice on coffee and how to supply it to office spaces and clubs, contact Ivana at ivana.smith@xpressodelight. com.au.

What’s Powerful about this? NATURE & CONSERVATION Photo by: Australian Geographic
By Liz Sanzaro
A group of researchers from Deakin university have been involved with this magnificent species the Powerful Owl, now for over 20 years. Recently a small team of two professors and some PhD students, have been stepping up greater monitoring. The team is known as Deakin University Powerful Owl Research Team (DUPORT) The most important factor threatening the Owls survival is increased urbanisation and landscape changes that impact this apex predator’s behaviour. The team is also needing to identify if there are any solutions that can contribute to conservation of the species.
and found lots of evidence of them in a second reserve. One of the PhD students from DUPORT also tracked them to two other reserves. At this stage there have been no examples of nesting pairs identified in our area. Most likely they are flying in to use our reserves to forage for food. While a nesting pair has not been observed in Maroondah, it is possible, they may be hiding in plain sight. And Nicholas Carter from DUPORT suggested the following ways in which us residents can help. He recommended the following • Reduce and avoid impacts to native vegetation, particularly hollow-bearing trees, to continue supporting foraging and potential future roosting/nesting behaviours. So please think hard before getting a big old tree removed due to dropped branches, it is these wounds on a tree that become nesting hollows • Council can and will prioritise habitat restoration and retention works near already existing habitat to expand wildlife corridors and connect isolated habitat patches •
In 2016, the team began tracking them to discover what they do at night, where they roost during the day, and how the owls identify resources that are important to them. Conservation groups of course are always keen to assist in any way to manage them, and mitigate threats. Locally one of our Maroondah Council environmental contractors saw an owl in one of our local reserves last year,

Keep outdoor lighting to a minimum, All bird species suffer from light pollution, it messes with their ability to function, just as it does for us humans, if we don’t get darkness for sleeping Please do not put out rat or mouse bait, instead get a trap. Baits readily bought at the hardware store are ingested by owls, second hand as they easily find any slow-moving dying animal which is often a ring
tail possum that has eaten the poison, which apparently is tasty to them too. •
Rodenticide kills the birds too!! This is verified by vets doing post mortems on dead Owls. Anything we can do to reduce the potential of these chemicals reaching owls would be great.
Powerful Owls with ringtail prey. The 2022 breeding season is right on our doorstep, with the owls undertaking their courting and mating behaviours in April and May. Females should start entering a large hollow-bearing tree between late-May to mid- June to lay and sit on the eggs. Take note of where owls are roosting between May - September because the nest tree is likely not too far away. If breeding and rearing was successful, one or two chicks should fledge lateSeptember (AFL Grand Final day is our milestone for fledge day!). Our team is very keen to document the breeding outcomes of as many owl pairs as possible this breeding season. If you know of any nesting trees, or wish to monitor the breeding behaviours of your local birds please let the team know. ATO: Common myths about work expense deductions ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch
The ATO is trying to make it easier for those preparing their own tax returns to understand some of the common mistakes that are made when claiming deductions in their returns. The ATO has listed some common myths about deductions which may lead you to make an incorrect claim. Here are some of the most common ones: Clothing and Laundry Expenses Myth: Everyone can automatically claim $150 for clothing and laundry expenses , 5000 km under the cents per kilometre method for car expenses, or $300 for work-related expenses, even if they didn't spend the money. There has been much debate in the news in recent months regarding transgender athletes competing in sports alongside people they most closely associate with. On one side, you have arguments for them being included. If they associate as a female and have transitioned to being a female, then they should be treated as female and compete against other females. On the other hand, you could argue that although they associate as a female and are having hormone replacement therapy to become ‘more female’ they are still built like a man with a man’s strength and size. I think we can all agree that the top female swimmer in the world still can’t compete against the top male in the world and expect to win. So how do we resolve this? In a world first, Fina, the swimming’s world governing body has voted against allowing transgender athletes to participate in elite women’s swimming events. Of the 152 Fina members who voted, 71% decided that transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete in these events if they have started puberty as a male. This essentially means they would have had to start the process to change their gender before they turn 12, a controversial topic on its own.
transgender in sports Almost immediately after this decision by Fina, the International Rugby League announced a ban on female transgender (male to female) players from participating in international rugby league events until they can undergo further research. The British Triathlon Federation has also made changes to their policy towards transgender athletes. Any transgender athlete older than 12 years of age will not be able to compete against femaleborn athletes. Instead they have created an open category for male transgender, female transgender and non-binary (but male sex at birth). This decision was made after 80% of 3000 members of the British Triathlon Federation surveyed supported the change.
The UCI, the World governing body for Cycling has updated their policy requiring a rider who is transitioning from male to female to double the time required with lower testosterone before they can compete from 12 months to 24 months. They have also lowered the allowable plasma testosterone level from 5 nmol/L to 2.5 nmol/L. It appears there is a huge movement going through the sporting community at the moment. What are your thoughts on this subject? Is this fair? Is it on par with the movement of women into traditionally men’s sports such as football? Email us at editor@findmaroondah.com.au and share your views. We will publish some of the responses next month.
Pilots pressured to fly while tired: union By Liv Casben (Australian Associated Press)
“The (survey) results show workers continue to bear the brunt of aviation’s peaks and troughs while profit-fanatic executives draw bonuses and exorbitant salaries.
Australian pilots are being pressured to fly while tired and work around “unstable” rosters, according to a union survey.
“We need a commission to rebalance aviation, support good jobs, and ensure Australians can always rely on safe and secure skies.”
The survey by the newly-merged Transport Workers Union and Virgin Independent Pilots’ Association has highlighted concerns about job security after thousands of aviation workers were stood down earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the 150 respondents from multiple companies, more than half said roster uncertainty was pressuring pilots to work while tired or unfit to fly. The vast majority expressed concerns about fatigue management and believed there was a growing trend towards insecure work. Workers will meet in Perth on Tuesday for the official launch of the TWU’s pilots division after the merger was recently approved by the Fair Work Commission.
Rex pilots, represented by the Australian Federation of Air Pilots, last month voted to take protected industrial action after years-long wage negotiations stalled. One respondent to the TWU survey said industry morale was at an “all-time low”, with the pandemic used as an excuse to erode wages and conditions. “Bringing pilots into the TWU means all aviation workers benefit from the might of collectivism, from the ground and baggage room right through to the flight deck,” TWU national secretary Michael Kaine said.
“Very few pilots would view this as a sustainable career in the long term anymore,” another respondent said. “We have no job security, are asked to work more for less and have no control of our lives due to rostering practices.” JULY 2022 | FIND MAROONDAH

Breastfeeding for the second time
without compromising their latch.
LACTATION CONSULTANT
Three Top Tips to Remember When Feeding a Newborn Again:
By Dr. Joanna Strybosch
When a woman has breastfeed a previous baby, there may be an assumption that she will just know what to do when her next baby comes along.
1.
Although prior breastfeeding experience is helpful, in my experience as a lactation consultant, I find that oftentimes mums need a refresher on how to position and latch a newborn. Afterall, the last baby she breastfed would have likely been an older baby, or even a toddler. Feeding a newborn is very different to feeding a toddler. The way she approached feeding her last baby will not be the way she begins with her next baby. It is important for mothers to realise this to avoid the mistake of assuming her newborn has skills that he has in fact not yet acquired. Breastfeeding a newborn is different to feeding an older baby and requires attention to specific aspects for best success. Newborn babies have to learn the skill of breastfeeding and they need certain things to be optimal to help them in that learning journey. Older babies have more mature sucking skills and have far greater head control and therefore they can be much more adaptable and flexible with their positioning
Ensure babies lower arm is around mum. When feeding a newborn in the cradle hold position, one of the commonest mistakes I see is forgetting to get the lower arm out from under baby and put it around mum. Babies have a reflex called the Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) that makes them extend and straighten their arm on the same side as they turn their head. Having baby’s arm extended as they are brought to the breast will help baby turn towards mum and not away. This reflex can be used to great affect in helping a newborn baby learn to locate the breast. In addition, this position will encourage maximum closeness between mother and baby’s bodies, which is ideal for optimal positioning and a deep latch.
2.
Babies are more stable when they are lying on their front, not on their back. Mum should recline as much as possible and have her baby lying on her tummy, on top of her. This will allow baby to have maximum contact with her mother’s body and
assist her stability at the breast. This prone position will also help avoid triggering the Moro (or startle) reflex. 3.
Have baby’s head and spine in alignment during latching and feeding. When the head and body are in a straight line, not turned, swallowing is easier. You only have to try swallowing a mouthful of liquid whist looking over your shoulder to know how uncomfortable this is. Older babies can easily sit on their mums lap and twist their body or turn their head to locate and latch onto the breast. But a newborn needs their head and body aligned to allow the most optimal latch and swallow.

Is Now The Best Time To Fix The Rate On Your Home Loan? MORTGAGE BROKERING
2.
Most flexible features are unavailable Flexible features that are standard on most variable rate loans are either not available or offered with reduced benefits on a fixed rate loan.
3.
Potential to lose on the interest rate bet Fixing a rate is effectively betting that the fixed rate will be lower than the variable rate for the time you choose to lock in for. In a volatile interest rate environment, where variable interest rates are dropping, if you have a fixed loan your rate will not reduce. The inflexibility of the fixed rate which is great in stable environments can be a curse at other times.
4.
Potential for higher repayments once the fixed rate expires A large number of borrowers have fixed their rates at historically low rates for the next few years. Once these rates expire the new interest rate will have increased significantly during this period, so their loan repayments could be much higher than what they have been used to paying. Borrowers may be in for a rude shock in the next year, depending on how long they locked in for when rates were much lower.
By Reece Droscher
As a mortgage broker one of the most common questions I receive from clients is whether they should fix the interest rate on their Home Loan. With interest rates rising and the cash rate increased just last week by a further 0.50%, borrowers on variable rate loans are seeing their loan repayments increased significantly from where they were only a few months ago.
dollars. For example, if you were to fix a rate today you could lock in for 4.59% for two years with some lenders. These same lenders have variable rates at 3.34% after the most recent rate rise, so you are looking at a difference of 1.25% to lock in a rate. If the variable rate was to keep rising, by locking in now you could save interest, however there is a risk that fixing now could cost you money too.
With commentary from the Reserve Bank indicating that they will use interest rates as a tool to reign in inflation, lenders have lifted their advertised fixed rates, particularly in the popular 2 and 3 year fixed rate products, from around 2% late last year to close to 5% now. This is much greater than the increases to variable rates, although with further increases in the cash rate expected this situation may change. Fixed rate loans are priced differently to variable rates and the recent significant increases are due to issues not linked to local inflationary pressures, although this is part of the problem. Banks and other lenders need to borrow money to be able to then lend it out to Home Loan customers, as they don’t hold sufficient deposits in bank accounts to cover the demand for lending. They access this from a number of different areas, with a large proportion borrowed from overseas banks. As the cost of money from these sources has increased, the extra costs are being reflected in the rates offered by lenders here. Given the current interest rate uncertainty is now the best time to fix the rate on your Home Loan? There are advantages and disadvantages to locking in your interest rate which would determine if fixing your rate is the best option for you. Advantages 1. Security When you fix a rate on your Home Loan you are guaranteed that the rate will not change for the period you have fixed for. This means your repayments will also remain unchanged which is helpful for household budgets. 2.
Potential Money Saver If you are able to fix your rate at the right time you will save money on interest, potentially thousands of
3.
Some Flexibility Most lenders will allow borrowers to make additional repayments when they have a fixed rate loan without incurring a penalty. It is most common for any extra repayments to be capped at a maximum $10,000 per year. Some lenders also offer the ability to have an offset account linked to the fixed rate loan to help reduce interest costs further, although these are generally only partial offsets usually 40%. For example if you had a $1,000 balance in an offset account only $400 of that balance would be offsetting your loan.
Disadvantages 1.
Penalties may be payable for early repayment If you become dissatisfied with your lender, decide to sell your home or you simply want to take advantage of better deals elsewhere, when you are locked in to a fixed rate you could be charged a substantial interest penalty to break the contract. A complex formula is used to determine what the loss to the lender would be if the fixed rate contract is broken which is outlined in any Home Loan Contract. This penalty could offset any benefit you received by locking in originally.
Split Loans If you can’t decide which option is the best one for you it is possible to hedge your bets. Lenders also offer a split loan option which means you can have a portion of your loan at a fixed rate and the balance on a variable rate. By splitting your loan you retain the flexible repayment features of a variable rate loan, as well as having some of your loan locked away securely on a fixed rate for a few years. It is always a great idea to speak with a mortgage broker who can guide you through the process, advise you on which loan structure would suit your needs best and recommend the most suitable lender to meet your requirements. At SHL Finance we are available to speak with you at any time. We are already proactively helping our clients negotiate a better rate with their current lender, reviewing their existing loans and discussing ways to potentially save clients thousands of dollars. LOOKING FOR SPONSORS Peter Horton
Whether you are involved with a Sporting Club or a Community Organisation I have no doubt your club or organisation would be seeking to increase their annual sponsorship dollars. Have you taken the time to analyse how you go about seeking sponsors? Have you appointed someone in your club or organisation who has the responsibility of both retaining and adding new sponsors and subsequently building your sponsorship revenue stream? Should your club or organisation have a person sales or marketing experience then convince him or her to take on the role. Look closely at the age demographic of your club/organisation to determine the range of business organisations to be approached that would be interested in using your club to reach their target audience. Develop sponsorship packages that clearly define the benefits that a sponsor will achieve depending on the level of sponsorship they agree to. Look at producing an introductory letter that would be sent out to prospective sponsors.

Do not send out letters or in fact emails to Dear Sir/Madam – take the time to find out the most relevant person to write to.
Plan to undertake the mail out of letters and or emails on a regular basis – the letters/emails are sent out and the following week you start making your calls seeking to make an appointment.

Look at the businesses in your local area – do you think they provide services and or products that meet the membership demographic of your club or organisation. Have you ever wondered what an insurer looks for when assessing the suitability of a potential new insured? The following article is penned by a highly experienced and respected underwriter by the name of Jeremy O’Connor, who describes succinctly what underwriters want and why they want it. “Risk management in insurance is the practice of identifying potential risks in advance, analysing these risks and taking precautions to mitigate the chances of potential claims. This usually involves the planning and implementation of procedures and processes that will reduce the likelihood of future claims. Risk management procedures help businesses insureds to identify potential risks in the day to day running of their businesses and provide an action plan to prevent future claims. Personal Insurance – How much cover should I have? FINANCIAL PLANNING
Income Protection Required Insurable Income
By Warren Strybosch
Last month I shared with you two stories about people who had personal insurance. The first person had it, cancelled it, and then was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The second person, had it, wanted to cancel it but thankfully spoke to me before they cancelled it and we managed to get the client over $400,000 in claim payments. The need for personal insurance is a real one. This month, I want to provide a guide as to how much personal insurance you should consider taking out. This is only a guide, and you should seek professional advice from a licensed financial planner before making any decisions regarding personal insurances. We suggest you book in a time with an advisor like myself (https://calendly.com/findgroup/15minute-phone-conversation) to discuss your insurance needs. We will help you work out what you need and provide you with a Free Insurance Report containing quotes for your consideration.

When it comes to future education costs, you estimate how much you are spending each year on kids’ education and multiply that by the number of years left before each child finishes high school. For instance, if your education costs are $12,000 per year, you have three children and the total number of years left for all three children is 8 years, then multiply $12,000 x $8,000 = $96,000. This figure would go also under Life, TPD and Trauma. Life

Medical costs vary between advisors. Given it is hard to predict what the out-of-pocket medical costs will be if you suffer an injury or illness, advisors tend to pick an arbitrary figure. For myself, I have done some research in out-of-pocket medical costs, and I found that leukemia was one of the costliest illnesses a family would have to deal with. It is estimate that the out-of-pocket costs for leukemia is about $150,000. As such, I use $150,000 in my calculations. Life

When it comes to modifications to home or car, this is where I do use an arbitrary figure of $100,000. If someone suffers a major Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) and needs wheelchair access, the cost could easily be $100,000 to upgrade the car and modify access to the home, bathroom, toilet, etc.

Laws have changed and most insurers will now only allow you to cover 70% of your earnings. So, if you are earning wages of $120,000 per tax, they will only allow you to insure yourself for $84,000 ($120,000 x 70%) or $7,000 per month. Client

For Other Provisions, we include Funeral costs of $25,000 under Life. Under TPD, assuming you are getting Income Protection Cover, we calculate how much income you would not have received from income protection e.g., 30%, and multiply that by the number of years left until you are able to apply for the age pension at age 67. If your wages were $120,000, then 30% would be $36,000. If your age was 52, you would have 15 years until you were able to apply for the age pension. Therefore, we multiply 15 x $36,000 = $540,000. For Trauma, we ask the question as to whether you need any additional funds before your Income Protection starts to be paid. Given most people are on a 90 day wait then they may need 3 months’ worth of wages (assuming no savings) = 3 x $10,000 = $30,000. Client

When it comes to provision for tax, many clients are unaware that if you suffer a TPD event and the TPD is held in super, you will have to pay about $25% in tax on the amount you have insured. For instance, if you have $100,000 of TPD cover in super and are entitled to be paid out, you are likely to lose $25,000 in tax and only be paid around $75,000. So, it is important to consider the tax side of things when it comes to TPD. With our example, assuming the total amount of TPD is to be held in Super then the taxable amount would be around $355,250 in tax.

We now have a rough idea as to how much cover we should have in place for Life ($806,000), TPD ($1,1776,250), Trauma ($811,000) and Income Protection ($7,000 per month). Life, TPD and Trauma are lump sum payments. This means that if you have an illness or injury and meet the insurers definition for a payout, then you or your loved ones will receive these amounts as a lump sum. Income protection is not a lump sum payment but a regular monthly payment to replace lost income from injury or illness. After the waiting period has passed, you will start to receive payments until you return to work or for the length of your benefit period, whichever occurs first. Needless-to-say, those of you who have a mortgage or debt, the amount of insurance you should hold will be higher than those without debt. Once you have an idea as to how much cover you need, the next step is to work out how much cover you can afford. I call this the difference between what is ‘ideal’ (what the advisor works out) to what is ‘real’ based on your cash flow and affordability. I jokingly state that the two shall never meet because it is not often that clients are able to afford the ‘ideal’ e.g., all the cove, that has been calculated. Once you decide on how much cover you require, then you need to request quotes to determine if the amount you requested is in fact affordable. You need to be aware, when requesting quotes of the following: a. b.

Level vs Stepped – if you are young, you should consider Level premiums. First year premium compared to cumulative premiums – it is now law to be told what your cumulative premiums will cost under Stepped and Level cover and not just told the first years Stepped premiums. Industry default cover vs Retail cover – it is often cheaper to obtain Life and TPD via a retail insurer than via your industry fund. These days you can have industry fund super but hold your insurance in super somewhere else. You don’t have to have your insurance with your super fund anymore. TPD ‘Any’ vs TPD ‘Own’ definitions – super funds do not offer TPD ‘Own’ cover. You should consider having TPD ‘Own’ definition, especially if you are a professional or work in an office type roll. Everyone should try and obtain TPD ‘Own’ if they can. IP and TPD in super or Super-linked – if you have a mortgage you might like to consider taking out Superlinked IP or TPD.

We will discuss in further details the above, but it is worth noting that personal insurance is not just about the amount of cover you should get. There are a lot of other factors to consider. Therefore, it is important to speak to a qualified financial advisor about your personal insurance needs and not to simply read a book that tells you to take out cover with industry fund. Industry fund cover is ‘good’, but it is not ‘better’ or ‘best’ practice. That type of simply advice might have applied 10 years ago but it does not apply now. If you simply take out cover with an industry fund you are likely to pay more in cover and be provided with sub-standard terms.

Strong outlook for Australian agriculture Mr Smith said beef, sheep meat, wool and dairy production were all forecast to deliver strong results in the second half of 2022. He told AAP that while global trade conditions have been challenging for some exporters, Australia has also been able to diversify the number of countries it sells to over the past year. By Liv Casben (Australian Associated Press)
Wet conditions across parts of the country haven’t dampened Australia’s agricultural outlook according to the latest report from Rural Bank.
strong production across most agricultural sectors. The report doesn’t account for this week’s wet weather across NSW.
Australian farmers continue to cash in on high commodity prices and strong production despite a volatile global environment, according to the bank’s half yearly outlook report.
Wet conditions are forecast to continue through to September across much of the country with the chance of a third La Nina weather event over the summer. Southern parts of Western Australia and Tasmania will likely see average rainfall.
Rural bank’s Andrew Smith says strong seasonal conditions for most of the country has seen strong results for farmers with forecasts that will continue. “It’s a good outlook and quite positive, and it’s great to see this three years in a row for our producers … where we’ve had good conditions across both the seasons and commodity prices,” Mr Smith told AAP. While heavy rainfall and flooding has provided a challenge for producers in Queensland and NSW, seasonal
The forecast is for above average Australian winter crop production for a third season in a row thanks to favourable weather conditions in most parts. Horticulture is also expected to see a return to strong production, after flooding in Queensland recently impacted supply. It’s expected the wet conditions will provide a boost to the nation’s cattle herd and sheep flock which are continuing to rebuild after the drought.
“For example lamb, we’ve been growing pretty strongly our lamb exports into the US for the last couple of years, but this last 12 months we’ve seen markets like the UAE, South Korea, Malaysia, Saudia Arabia increasing as well.” Australian sheep meat, almond, wool, lentil, and wine producers are expected to see big benefits from improved access to the Indian market with the recently signed interim Australia-India economic cooperation and trade agreement. The report concluded the relationship with Australia’s largest trading partner China has shown no tangible signs of improvement with a range of tariffs in place on Australian barley, wine, lobster and beef. It says little to no supply of grain available from Ukraine has driven strong demand for Australian grain, particular throughout Asia. Mr Smith said seasonal conditions, trade conditions and supply chain disruptions would all continue to impact output in the second half of 2022.

At the end of the "kick" he asked "Will you guys be coming again next week. If so, I'll bring a few friends." And he did just that! Each Saturday morning, more again next week. If so, I'll bring a few friends." And he did just that! Each Saturday morning, more and more boys arrived with Ray and Peter turning up each Saturday. Soon, some of the dads started coming down too for a "look" and wanting to get involved. In 1968 Ray organised 4 sets of jumpers - Red, Black, Green and Red and games were played amongst those teams. The "Blacks" won the first premiership coached by Barry Dennis. This informal arragement became the beginning of the Heatherdale Junior Football Club. In 1969, a team of Under 13's was entered into the Melbourne Boys League. The distance they travelled was vast, and the opposition very aggressive. In 1971, the Club entered teams into teh Doncaster and Districts Junior Football League. In 1972, there were four Under 11 teams.
Coached by Frank Horsnaill, one of these teams won the Club's first premiership. Frank was a long time curator of the Heatherdale Reserve, Purches Street, Heatherdale. It was also this year, that the new pavilion was used for the first time. The founder Ray Woolridge was President for the first 3 years from 1969-1971. Ray then went on to coach teh Saturday morning competitions. In 1974, he took on the Under 10's, a role that he did for a long time and was famous for. Kids would come from up to 220 kms away to play at Heatherdale to be part of the spirit that Ray had instilled. The encouragement he gave each and every boy was a joy to their parents. Ray's unique style of coaching saw him win 4 premiership, and where "runner-up" in 1975 1976, 1977 and 1979. Ray went on to coach until 1990 and was also a trainer at Vermont Football Club for 10 years. He was affectionately known as "The Godfather" for the way he looked after the kids in his charge. During the late 1970's and early 1980's the Heatherdale Football Club was
unofficially the largest Junior Football Club in Australia. With some 450 boys playing each weel this equates to about 18 teams. The Club wore purple and gold stripes and were known as the Dales. They competed in the DDFL until 1998, when they merged with Heathmont Junior Football Club. At the time of the merger, Heatherdale was strong club both financially and in terms of its total player membership and was not in need of rescue. Five young players with had been drafted to AFL clubs in five consecutive years with the clubs returning money back to the junior clubs of the draftees. Heathmont at that time. The merger wasn't a popular move, but the Committee had "run out of steam". As the area aged, most age group had become short on numbers and the Club no longer enjoyed the success it formerly did. Heatherdale was a proud Club and saw many great people pass through it doors, all who have many great memories.

Apprentice wage subsidy programs All eligible businesses who employ an apprentice between 5 October 2020 and 30 June 2022 are eligible to receive a 50% wage subsidy. The wage subsidy is available for 12 months from commencement of employment. The maximum available subsidy is $7,000 per quarter per apprentice. This wage subsidy is a stimulus payment announced to effectively boost employment for young people and help businesses transition away from the COVID-19 downturn. These payments will be received via the Australian Apprentices Incentives Program. This program currently services employers by providing cash payments when apprentices meet certain targets.
Announced: 12-Mar-2020 Updated: 12-Apr-2022
Another program for apprentices that was in place prior to 5 October 2020 dealt with keeping apprentices employed (as opposed to employing new apprentices). These subsidies were to combat rising unemployment and an expected economic downturn due to COVID-19. The wage subsidy was based on which apprentices remained in employment with their employer on 1 March 2020 and 1 July 2020. Originally, only small business employers were eligible to participate. From 1 July 2020, the government extended the measure to include medium-sized businesses. The original wage subsidy commenced for employers from 1 January 2020 and ran through to 31 March 2021.

Tips for maintaining your wood heater this winter As the cold snap of winter sets in, the incorrect use of wood heaters can affect air quality and potentially compromise our health. Maroondah Environment Advisory Committee Chair Councillor Marijke Graham said that due to an increase in enquires and concerns about the use of wood heaters, Council was urging households to check they were being used properly. “Solid fuel heaters, such as wood heaters and fireplaces, continue to be a valued source of heating for many residents. Well-operated, they can provide an efficient way to heat your home and should produce heat without smoke,” Cr Graham said. “But wood heaters that aren’t maintained or used correctly can be a major contributor to air pollution, an environmental nuisance for neighbours, and waste money through unburnt fuel if used inefficiently,” she said. Check your chimney regularly to see how well your fire is burning. If there is smoke coming from your chimney, increase the air supply to your fire. Your fire should only smoke when you first light it and when you add extra fuel. “Excessive smoke generated by wood heaters can affect indoor and outdoor air quality and potentially impact people’s health. This is particularly concerning for people with respiratory illnesses, vascular conditions, the elderly and children,” Cr Graham said.
When replacing or looking to buy a new wood heater, look for the Australian Home Heating Association (AHHA) logo and Landcare logos to ensure your new wood heater complies with current Australian standards and has minimal impact on the environment.
•
What to do if you’re concerned about smoke If you’re concerned about smoke from your neighbour’s wood heater, Council suggests first talking to your neighbour as they may not be aware there’s a problem. If this issue continues, or you don’t feel comfortable speaking directly with your neighbour, you can report your concern to Council’s Environmental Health Unit on 1300 88 22 33.
How to reduce wood smoke
Using unseasoned or damp wood that contains moisture can struggle to catch fire, resulting in more smoke and dangerous creosote build-up in the chimney, which is a potential fire hazard.
Simple steps to reduce wood smoke include:
You should also never burn rubbish, driftwood, painted or treated wood. These are sure to pollute the air and can produce poisonous gases.
•
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) advises households with wood heaters to minimise the risks through regular cleaning and maintenance; burning dry wood with a bright flame; not allowing the fire to smoulder overnight; and never burning rubbish or treated wood.
•
•
•
•
•
Don’t let your heater smoulder overnight. Keep enough air in the fire to maintain a flame. Burn only dry, aged hardwood in your wood heater. Unseasoned wood has lots of moisture, which causes a fire to smoke. Store your wood undercover in a dry, ventilated area. Freshly cut wood needs to be stored for at least 8 to 12 months. Never burn rubbish, driftwood, painted or treated wood. These are sure to pollute the air and can produce poisonous gases. When lighting a cold heater, use
•
• •
plenty of dry kindling to establish a good fire quickly. Use several small logs rather than one large log and stack them loosely in your heater so air can circulate. Don’t cram the firebox full. Keep the flame lively and bright. Your fire should only smoke when you first light it and when you add extra fuel. Open the air controls full for 5 minutes before and 15 to 20 minutes after reloading the heater. Check your chimney regularly to see how well your fire is burning. If there is smoke coming from the chimney, increase the air supply in your fire. Have your chimney professionally cleaned every year to prevent creosote build-up If you are buying a wood heater, make sure it has a compliance plate showing it meets Australian Standards.
Further information For more tips on how to operate your wood heater correctly, visit the EPA website To make sure your wood heater is an AHHA-certified wood heater, visit the Australian Home Heating Association website The Australian Home Heating Association Inc. (AHHA) is Australia’s the peak industry body representing over 250 manufacturers, retailers, installers, maintenance companies and firewood suppliers within the home heating industry.

Maroondah Council News What attracts rats and mice to your home during winter?
When the cold weather sets in, so do rats and mice. As temperatures drop, rodents search out new shelters, opting for the warmth and comfort of the indoors and where there are plentiful food supplies available. Rats and mice are rodents that carry disease and can be a public health concern in the community. When in the right environment, they breed rapidly and can quickly cause damage. Rodents have been successful in populating every continent except Antarctica. This is because of their small size, short breeding cycle and ability to eat a variety of foods. They are the second most successful mammal on the planet, second only to humans. Not all rodents are considered pests. Many rodents are an important part of the food chain, as they are prey for meateating animals such as native birds of prey, snakes and lizards. Common pest rodent species in Victoria include the Norway rat, the roof rat and the house mouse. Although Council does not provide direct pest control services, there are things you can do to prevent rodent harbourage. We recommend maintaining a clean and
hygienic environment and eliminating possible food, water or shelter sources as the most effective way of reducing activity in and around the home. Apart from actual sightings, there are some tell-tale signs you should be aware of.

Reduce food supply Food products are a prime target for rats and mice. Avoid leaving pet food outside; pick up any fallen fruit and nuts (these along with grains are among their favourite things to eat); keep compost covered; and store bulk foods in air-tight sealed containers. Keep outside areas tidy Remove garden waste or other disuse materials from your property. Ensure bin lids are secure (If your Council bin is damaged contact our Customer Service Team on 1300 88 22 33). Use mint as a repellent
Signs you may have a rodent infestation
Rats and mice avoid the scent of mint. Plant mint in your garden and rub peppermint oil indoors along areas you’ve experienced rodent problems.
•
Rodenticides
• • • • • •
Droppings - often found in the pantry or kitchen cupboards and drawers Sounds in the roof, walls or sub-floor areas Damaged food packaging Odours - usually a musty odour Burrows found along walls, or fences, woodpiles, stored items Damage from gnawing Greasy tracks along the floor or footprints and tail tracks in dusty areas
How to deter rodent activity If you are experiencing issues in relation to vermin and rodent activity, there are ways to discourage their presence and manage the problem. Here are a few tips to help deter these unwanted visitors: Pest proof your home Seal gaps and holes under eaves, roof tiles and in external walls - mice can squeeze through the smallest of gaps.
If opting for rodenticides (bait stations, blocks etc), do not place baits in areas where they can be accessed by children, pets, wildlife or livestock, or use lockable bait stations. Always read the label before use and apply in accordance with directions. Always follow control safety precautions When in doubt, contact a licensed pest controller who can advise you on the best course of action. Further information For advice on the responsibility for managing or deterring pests on you or your neighbour’s land, including other measures for removal, see our Pest Control page or phone 1300 88 22 33. Zoe’s parents were told there was no cure for NF and limited treatment options. Every NF outcome is different, resulting in constant fear of what the future may hold. There was an urgent need for more medical research. NF encompasses three types - NF1, NF2 and Schwannomatosis. The condition causes tumours to grow on nerve endings throughout the body. It can affect major organs and lead to many serious and debilitating health issues including cafe au lait spots, blindness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, chronic pain, amputation, cancer, epilepsy, learning difficulties and autism. Approximately one in 2500 people are affected – meaning about 10,000 Australians and 2,500,00 people worldwide are impacted by NF. Zoe’s family was determined to make a difference. In 2018, when Zoe turned 18, The Flicker of Hope Foundation was born – a registered charity dedicated to raising funds for medical research into NF. Thanks to incredible support of many generous sponsors and supporters, the Foundation has raised, and donated, over $1.5M to NF medical research in just 3.5 years. 100% of funds donated are directed to medical research as Flicker of Hope is run by Zoe’s family and volunteers – there’s no paid staff or overhead administrative costs. Flicker of Hope is currently funding world leading Australian research, partnering with The Royal Children's Hospital, Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, The Florey, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation and the Children's Medical Research Institute. Read more about these projects at http://flickerofhope.org.au/

Everyone affected by NF has a different story and experience. Diagnosed with NF1 at 18 months, eight year old Katie has endured m to fight her brain and eye tumours. It's an ongoing battle against an advancing enemy.
year old Spencer was diagnosed with NF1 when just 12 ks old, and Neuroblastoma at age three, requiring eight s of treatment. Surgery for a Plexiform Neurofibroma ed on the base of his neck resulted in complications when nal cord folded and pierced his brain. Months of traction, e surgeries, a spinal fusion and learning to walk again his dream of becoming an AFL footballer. With over 20 s in his neck, chest and central nerve system he faces an ain future.
old Libby has NF2, and is rapidly losing her hearing and he is scared about also losing her mobility.
a six year old full of energy, despite struggling with tibial asia causing daily leg pain. Wearing an ankle foot orthotic ns he can’t run around like others his age.
dly these stories are not unique - there are many more hildren, and adults, living with NF. Many medical practitioners have little knowledge of NF – leading to many with the condition being undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed. This can have the flow on effect of many generations being impacted by NF. Please help The Flicker of Hope Foundation shine a light on NF. RETIREMENT
Did you know? 40.0% is the new permissible interest rate (up from 4.01%) that can be charged to calculate the daily payments for outstanding acccommodation balances for new residents entering care between 1 January 2022 and 31 March 2022.
Downsizer Contribution RETIREMENT By Warren Strybosch
What is the downsizer contribution?
The amount you are contributing is from the proceeds of selling your home, where the contract of sale was exchanged on or after 1 July 2018.
The downsizer contribution is an amount of up to $300,000 that can be paid in to your super, from the proceeds of selling your home. If you have a spouse, the total contribution is up to $600,000 ($300,000 each).
Your home was owned by you or your spouse, for 10 years or more prior to the sale (the ownership period is generally calculated from the date of settlement of purchase, to the date of settlement of sale).
A downsizer contribution does not count towards your contribution caps,1 and can still be made if you have a total super balance of $1.7 million or more.
Your home is in Australia and is not a caravan, houseboat, or other mobile home.
Downsizer contributions are only available where the contract of sale was exchanged on or after 1 July 2018, and must be made within 90 days of receiving the proceeds of sale. Who is eligible? Eligibility is determined by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The ATO outlines eligibility to make a downsizer contribution as follows: You (and if applicable, your spouse) will be eligible to make a downsizer contribution to super if you can answer yes to all of the following: You are 60 years old or older at the time you make a downsizer contribution (there is no maximum age limit)
The proceeds (capital gain or loss) from the sale of the home are either exempt, or partially exempt from capital gains tax (CGT) under the main residence exemption, or would be entitled to such an exemption, if the home was a CGT rather than a pre-CGT (acquired before 20 September 1985) asset. You have provided your super fund with the Downsizer Contribution into Superannuation form either before, or at the time of making your downsizer contribution. You make your downsizer contribution within 90 days of receiving the proceeds of sale, which is usually at the date of settlement. You have not previously made a downsizer contribution to your super from the sale of another home.
findmaroondah.com.au
Please Note If you sold your house and your name (and not your spouse’s) was listed on the title of your property, your spouse can still make a downsizer contribution, or have one made on their behalf, provided you both meet the eligibility criteria. If you have a spouse, the combined total contribution is up to $600,000 ($300,000 each), and both you and your spouse will

What if the ATO determines that I’m not eligible? Eligibility to make a downsizer contribution is determined by the ATO. If the ATO subsequently determines that your contribution does not meet the downsizer contribution eligibility requirements, they will notify you, and QSuper. Once we are notified, we will assess whether your contribution could have been made as a personal contribution, and which contribution cap it will count towards.
need to complete the form at the end of this factsheet.
If it is decided your contribution can not be accepted, we will return the contribution amount to you.
Downsizer contribution examples:
What else should I know?
A couple sells their home for
•
$400,00 The maximum contribution cannot exceed $400,000 in total. This means they can choose to contribute half each, or split it - for example, $300,000 into one account and $100,000 into the other.
•
•
A couple sells their home for
$600,00 Out of John and Fatima, only John is on the title. They both meet all the other requirements, therefore John and Fatima can make a downsizer contribution of up to $300,000 each.
A couple sells their home for
$800,00 Each spouse can make a contribution of up to $300,000.
• •
While the downsizer contribution must be made within 90 days of receiving the proceeds of sale, in some circumstances you may be able to request an extension from the ATO. Please contact the ATO for more information. The downsizer contribution does not count towards your contribution caps. However, when you move your super savings into retirement phase, it will count towards your transfer balance cap,1 currently $1.7 million. You can make more than one downsizer contribution from the proceeds of a single sale (up to your limit). However, all contributions must be made within 90 days of receiving the proceeds of sale, unless you have been granted an extension. Downsizer contributions are not tax deductible. Downsizer contributions will be taken into account for determining eligibility for the Age Pension
Where can I find more information? The ATO provides detailed information on downsizer contribution eligibility. Visit ato.gov.au/downsizing or call the ATO on 13 10 20.

celebrating NAIDOC week
By Mandy Camilleri
On Saturday, 2nd July, Norwood FC, South Croydon FC and Eastern Devils FC joined together to celebrate NAIDOC week which is held from 3rd-10th July. An initiative started by Norwood in 2021 and the brain child of Norwood player Jamie Bennell who is the current AFL Players Association Indigenous Relationship Manager. Jamie’s initiative was to be the first club in the EFNL to wear an Indigenous jumper and to celebrate NAIDOC Week as a club. With the help of Indigenous artist and input from both Jamie Bennell and Tristen & Tyler Tweedie, the jumper came to life. On that occasion in 2021 Norwood played South Croydon who fully supported the initiative and confirmed in 2022 they would be honoured to continue playing Norwood on this round and would design their own Indigenous jumper. The day kicked off with an Indigenous lunch hosted by President Mark Etherington. The menu for the day included many indigenous ingredients
being utilised with a full breakdown of those ingredients as an information sheet included on each table. The attendees heard from special guest Matthew Whelan, former Melbourne player and currently serving as Indigenous Projects Officer at Melbourne. Matt was instrumental in the recent 2-week name change of Melbourne FC to Narrm FC. Matt shared some stories about his football career and his current role at Melbourne FC.
At the conclusion of the lunch, Norwood presented South Croydon with a boomerang as a gift of respect and recognition. Following the lunch, the celebrations continued on the ground with a traditional smoking ceremony and dances performed by the Koorie Youth Will Shake Spears dance group. A truly moving experience with all Norwood, South Croydon, Eastern Devils players, officials and supporters forming a circle and sharing the experience as one united group. The day ended with best player from Norwood’s Senior side being presented with an Emu Caller and the Development Squad best player receiving clap sticks. Again, giving a gift as a sign of respect and recognition for each of these players. The day truly paid justice to the significance and celebration of Indigenous culture and heritage in Australia. Norwood Football Club prides itself on continuing this tradition, to support NAIDOC week for many years to come. NAIDOC Week | NAIDOC JULY 2022 | FIND MAROONDAH
