LABOR WINS 4

FIND MAROONDAH | JUNE 2022

findmaroondah.com.au

– what does that mean for Australia? By Warren Strybosch

The Labor Party’s victory ends almost a decade of conservative government. In a triumphant speech to supporters in Sydney, Labor leader Anthony Albanese boldly promised action on global warming, indigenous rights and sluggish wage growth. He said he wanted to “promote unity and optimism, not fear and division.” In his victory address, Albanese said Australia – which currently relies on coal for most of its electricity - has the opportunity to make fundamental changes. "Together we can end the climate wars. Together we can take advantage of the opportunity for Australia to be a renewable energy superpower," Albanese said. "Together we can work in common interests with business and unions to drive productivity, lift wages and profits.” From humble beginnings living with just his mother in state-subsidized housing, Albanese will be his country’s 31st prime minister. He said he hoped his journey would inspire “Australians to reach for the stars.” The 47th Parliament of Australia will be made up of 77 Labor seats, 58 Coalition seats, four Greens seats and 12 other crossbenchers. Whilst Labor party only received about 33% of the primary votes from the more than 17 million Australians who were eligible to vote, Labor picked up a large percentage of preference votes

from the Coalition who placed Labor ahead of Greens. It is estimated around a third of voters did not support either of the two main parties. Analysts have said non-aligned lawmakers, many of whom are women who are seeking action on climate change and integrity in politics, could wield significant power in the new parliament. Australia’s outgoing center-right coalition government suffered a humiliating defeat in the polls and Scott Morrison has stepped aside as leader. The Liberals will need to take time to consider where they went wrong. Was it simply that they had been in government for 10 years and it was time to have a change or is there other greater underlining issues that the Liberals will need to combat before they return to the polls in four year’s time. The final win for the Labor Party comes as Mr Albanese announces his ministry, following the first Labor caucus of the new government. Labor had enough seats to govern in its own right, but with 76 it would have needed to find a speaker from the crossbench. Several independents sounded out for the role.

had

been

The greatly expanded crossbench was one of the most significant results of the federal election, as several independent candidates successfully toppled established Liberal politicians on a promise to force government accountability and climate action.

Independent MP Rebekha Sharkie told the ABC that Labor's majority would not diminish the influence of the crossbench. "For the last two parliaments, for the majority of the time, the government, the previous government had the majority but they still needed to talk to the crossbench because they are very tight numbers and whether it is 76 or 77, in this parliament would still be tight," Ms Sharkie said. Australians are now waiting to see what Albanese and his team will do to get Australian back on track. With a large Australian debt, an ever increasing cost of living, and an interest rate looking to rise significantly over the next 12 months, Labor will have plenty of challenges on their hands as they begin their time in government.

Business Interruption – AICOW (Additional Increased Cost of Working)

GENERAL INSURANCE By Craig Anderson

Additional increases in cost of working which arise during a period of interruption to a business, can be covered under a business pack policy. The cost of removal and relocation of stock and equipment after a shop is storm damaged for example, is additional to normal operating costs. As it is a necessary expense incurred as a result of an insured occurrence, costs may be covered if the AICOW option is selected. An appropriate sum insured, and time period also need to be selected. Hire costs for emergency shuttering or hoardings, generator hire, or even temporary security patrol costs, to name a few items which may be covered. Many business owners are well versed in the main Business Interruption section of their policy, and realise they are reliant on their location for passing trade. Even a temporary relocation due to a fire or

storm may cause a plunge in revenue, and so they are keen to cover their gross profit or gross revenue depending on which option is best. Due to the tendency to often overlook the AICOW costs which may be incurred as a result of a total or partial loss, the client could suffer financially. The default level of cover offered in your average business pack is usually only $25k for a year, and can be increased to meet your needs. If your business premises could take 2 years to rebuild after a total loss, and it is necessary to relocate until the replacement building is completed, you will need to allow an adequate sum to refit other premises to meet your needs. Remember that there will be time spent on planning applications, building permits, possible problems with re-zoning, and construction delays with bad weather or supply of materials or trades. We all imagine that if the premises we rely on for our living are destroyed, that they will be back in a year; however this

is very rarely ever the case. In fact, 2 years can be too short a period depending on size, type, location, and complexity of the building. The simple solution is to sit down with your broker and examine your position carefully; it may just save you a load of money and heartache. Stolen generations payments in Vic: ATO factsheet By Warren Strybosch

The ATO has published a fact sheet on the tax treatment of lump sums paid by the Victorian Government under the Stolen Generations Reparations Package and Stolen Generations Funeral Fund. The ATO says such payments by the Victorian Government to a Stolen Generations member are not taxable. Accordingly, these payments do not need to be shown in the tax return for a Stolen Generations member because they are not taxable. JUNE 2022 | FIND MAROONDAH

What to look for in a Bookkeeper BOOKKEEPER By Neha Nayyar

Maybe you have been doing your own books, or perhaps you have a bookkeeper and it is time for a change. Regardless of your situation, a great bookkeeper should be an invaluable asset for your business, so it pays to take your time and choose wisely. There are a few key things to consider when deciding on a bookkeeper. Here are some key qualities to look for: A great reputation Does this bookkeeper have a great reputation? Word of mouth recommendations are fantastic. You can also check on their Google or Facebook Business Page if they have one to see what people have said about their services. Having said that, if the bookkeeper looks great but has just a few bad reviews, investigate a bit more and even ask the bookkeeper for their side of the story. Responsive In the modern world with the cloud and emails, there is no reason for a bookkeeper to not be reasonably responsive. Whilst you can’t always

receive things instantly, you need to determine the expectations of the business relationship. Ask questions like “what are your turnaround times for queries?”, “can I call if emergency?” etc. Proficient Your bookkeeper needs to be proficient in whatever accounting software you currently use, or you need to be happy to move across to their preferred platform. Most bookkeepers are multiskilled and will use all the main programs such as Xero, MYOB, Quickbooks etc but it pays to ask the question. Ideally, you want a bookkeeper highly skilled in cloud accounting, and most now are. Ethical & Trustworthy Over time, a strong relationship will build between you and your bookkeeper. They are usually heavily involved in the

backend of your business and want you to succeed. Your bookkeeper needs to be someone you can trust and someone who is compliant and conducts business ethically. Registered BAS Agent By ensuring your bookkeeper is a registered BAS agent, you know your business is protected. Registered BAS agents are licenced and carry mandatory insurances and have the required experience and formal training. At Sum and Substance we know the importance and need for the right bookkeeper for your business. Please contact us if you would like more information on our bookkeeping service. HERITAGE & HISTORY By Russ Haines OAM

Hermann Frederick Pump, one of Ringwood's early settlers, died on 1st January 1954, in Heathmont, Victoria, at the age of 79. Up to the day of his death he had seemed to be in his normal health, and had enjoyed a family reunion at Christmas, with twenty-three children — grand-children and greatgrandchildren—sitting round the table for Christmas dinner. Mr. Pump was a wellknown Ringwood personality. His close associates spoke of him as a wonderful man, always ready to help others, and as staunch a friend as one could wish to find. In 1890, 16-year-old Hermann Pump sailed from Denmark to Australia. After a voyage of three months he had his first glimpse of the coastline of the land where he was to spend the rest of his life. For a few years he worked on an orchard at Doncaster. Then he came seeking his own land at Ringwood. In 1896 he bought 50 high-timbered acres in Canterbury Road, which had to be grubbed foot by foot before fruit trees could be planted. "Why choose a site with such tall trees - giving yourself a lot of hard work, aren't you?" said a friend. But young Hermann Pump answered, that land which grew high timber was good land, and he was prepared to do the work and the necessary waiting for the orchard to come to fruition. In 1899 he married Louise Zerbe, of Doncaster, daughter of one of the early German settlers, and brought her to the house in Canterbury Road where they were to rear a family and live out their allotted span. With the orchard planted he had to wait for it to grow and bear.

7

hermann frederick pump

In the meantime he earned money carting wood over the rough bush tracks. As the children grew and the orchard progressed, there was plenty of hard work. His son, Wilfred, remembers going off to market with his father in the wagon, starting perhaps about 9.30 in the evening, arriving about 3 a.m. and getting home in the early morning, after which his father would start on another day's work. Money was hard to come by, but at least then it had real value. In the early 1900s one could buy a large loaf of bread for 4d. Mr. and Mrs. Pump had four daughters and one son, Wilfred, who now lives with his wife and family next door to the old farmhouse. Mr. Pump was President of the Heathmont Railway League which fought a stiff battle for the station at Heathmont. The station was built in 1926, and on the 1st May in that year Mrs. Pump was given the honour of cutting the ribbon at the official opening and presented with

the scissors used at the ceremony as a souvenir. Mr. Pump was a member of the Ringwood Cool Stores Committee for 40 years, and was its President at the time of his death. He was a member of the Ringwood School Committee for 13 years, and on retirement was presented with a mantel clock. One of the original members of the first Ringwood Horticultural Society, he was President in the days when the Ringwood Show was talked of as the second largest Show in the State. He was a foundation member of the Ringwood Bowling Club, and a member of the Ringwood Branch of the M.U.I.O.O.F. for 53 years, as well as one of its trustees. His interest in cricket was well known, and for 27 years he was President of the Heathmont Cricket Club, and was made a life member. His daughter, Rita, who is also a life member, has been official scorer for the Club for many years.

Deeming Rates to be frozen for two years By Warren Strybosch

Labor and the Coalition have announced that they will freeze the social security deeming rates for the next two years. The Prime Minister said about 450,000 Age Pensioners and 440,000 other social security recipients would benefit from this measure. The lower deeming rate will be frozen at 0.25% for financial investments up to $53,600 for single pensioners and $89,000 for pensioner couples. The upper deeming rate will remain at 2.25% on investment assets over the amount of $53,600 (or $89,000 for couples). The Opposition Leader said Labor would also freeze the deeming rates for two years.

Vitamin D for a strong immune system

NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger

The most important role of vitamin D is putting calcium into our bones. But it also has other roles such as regulating our immune systems. Vitamin D is involved in the regulation of both the innate immune system (general defence) and the acquired immune system (specific targeted defence), as well as having a role in regulating inflammation. Studies have shown that higher levels of vitamin D are associated with reduced disease, including respiratory infections. A blood test for Vitamin D gives a reference range of 50-250 nmol/L, with the lower end of this range set in order to prevent osteoporosis (spontaneous spinal fractures). Whilst vitamin D levels above 50nmol/L does prevent osteoporosis, optimal health is found in levels between 100-150nmol/L. Our bodies make vitamin D with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) sunlight and it was around 100 years ago after the industrial revolution, when rickets (a disease of bone malformation) was found in many children of Northern Europe. These children spent most of the daylight hours inside working, but now it is estimated that almost 50% of the world’s population are deficient in vitamin D. Daily exposure of arms and hands (or

equivalent skin elsewhere) near midday is considered to produce adequate vitamin D, and emerging research shows that other health benefits come from exposure to sunlight. Being further from the equator, or having darker skin increases the amount of sunlight required to make enough vitamin D, and in Melbourne, little UV light is available in winter. Ideally, your body would make enough vitamin D from the sunlight in the summer, to get you through the following winter. Oily fish such as salmon, herring, and mackerel are the best food sources of vitamin D, and traditionally, these fish were regularly consumed by those living at northern latitudes. Cod liver oil is high in vitamin D, but it is also high in vitamin A which is toxic in high doses. Take care not to exceed the recommended amount especially if you are taking multiple supplements that contain vitamin A. If your vitamin D levels are low, supplementing through the winter can help to keep you well. But not all vitamin D supplements are the same. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) supplements of plant origin were the first to be available, but this type of vitamin D is not easily absorbed. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a form that is absorbed much more easily and if you are taking it regularly, look for a supplement that contains a low dose of vitamin K, as this will assist with absorption.

Recent research has shown vitamin D3 in the calcifediol form is more effective again as it is in a form that is easily absorbed. This is particularly true in cases of deficiency, liver damage, kidney disease, and intestinal malabsorption, as these organs are all involved in absorption, metabolism and activation of vitamin D. Whole Naturopathy has vitamin D3 in the calcifediol form in stock. A naturopath can also make a custom mix of herbs, recommend nutritional products, or homeopathy best suited to your unique symptoms.

This advice is general in nature and not intended to be prescriptive. For individualised prescriptive advice, please see a naturopath or other health care practitioner.

WHS Responsibilities of Company Officers

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY By Mark Felton

Are you an officer in your company? Did you know that officers of a company have specific duties under occupational health and safety (OHS) laws? If you are unsure, you will need to carefully examine your role in the company to determine if you meet the criteria as an officer. Roles and influence may be different for businesses but if you answer yes to any of the following questions there is strong reason to believe that you are an officer in your business (this includes Not-ForProfit organisations): • • •

Do you own or operate the business? Do you make high-level or strategic decisions about all or part of your business? Do you make the financial decisions for the business?

and

Officers of a company (this includes Not-For-Profit organisations in the state of Victoria) are required to show due diligence in ensuring its OHS duties are met. This can include safeguarding the health and safety of workers, and other persons, and making sure suitable safe work systems are in place. As an officer, it is important to be aware that with that responsibility comes higher penalties for failing to meet said duties, and include possible criminal charges

and imprisonment.

How you can meet your OHS duty as an officer

As an officer of a company, you have an important role in OHS management systems. You should help to develop and implement the system, and ensure it includes appropriate policies, procedures, and processes for managing OHS in your workplace.

One of the most important tasks is to ensure your OHS knowledge is current, and that you are aware of the specific hazards and risks of your business. You can demonstrate this by: • • • •

Keeping your knowledge current of OHS issues relevant to you and your business. Gaining a thorough understanding of the hazards and risks relevant to your business. Maintaining appropriate resources and processes to eliminate or minimise risks to health and safety. Ensuring appropriate processes for reporting and actioning incidents, hazards, and risks are in place, and are documented. Ensuring that processes comply with your obligations under the OHS Act.

As an officer, it's important that you take an active role and seek advice from others where needed. Actively drawing on the knowledge and experience of others, including employees and experts in OHS management, is good practice and demonstrates due diligence on your part. Is your documentation adequate? Often businesses have at least rudimentary WHS management systems, but documentation is poor. Lift On Ban for Mad Cow Blood Donors By Jodie Moore

These days, we often hear about diseases being passed from animals to humans. Bird flu, swine flu, even Covid-19 supposedly have their origins in animals. Mad-cow disease however is one that has been proven as coming from cows. In cows, it is called BSE or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. When humans eat meat from a cow that carries the protein that causes BSE, they have the chance of contracting the human equivalent, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or vCJD. vCJD can be contracted by eating meat, especially from the brain, spinal cord tissue and intestinal tract from cows who have the disease. It cannot be caught from drinking milk from a sick cow. It was also believed it could be transferred through donations of bodily fluids such as blood and breast milk. It is unknown how long the disease can lie dormant

but there are many who believe it could be for 50+ years. There is no way to detect if someone has the disease, no test available to test blood products. A true diagnosis can only be achieved postpartum through a biopsy of the brain. Transmission to humans appears to be rare with just 232 people worldwide (2019), 170 of which were from the UK, having contracted the virus. The UK have continued to accept blood donations throughout this time, mainly because they would have had no one left to donate blood if they didn’t. Recently however, the TGA, Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia, has lifted the ban, allowing anyone who was

in the UK for 6 months or more between 1980 to 1996 to now donate blood. The ban has been in place since December 2000 and the question of when the ban will be lifted is one of the top questions received by the Red Cross Lifeblood. A team have been working for well over 12 months to gather evidence to submit to the TGA to have the ban lifted. On April 28,2022 they were successful. Appointments for those affected by the ban won’t be available until late 2022 whilst Red Cross Lifeblood update all their systems and procedures. In the meantime, you can register here www. lifeblood.com.au/UK and be informed when you are eligible to come in.

Phoenixing – Directors Banned By Warren Strybosch

ASIC has successful banned a Tasmanian director who engaged in illegal phoenixing for several years. Between 2014 and 2018, Mr Robert John Walker was a director of Tazzy Tyres Wholesale, Tazzy Tyres Accessories, Tazzy Tyres Retail and Tazzy Tyres Pty Ltd. The companies provided retail sales of, and services related to tyres. Mr Walker engaged in illegal phoenix activities, whereby he transferred the assets of indebted companies to other companies for no consideration, namely Tazzy Tyres Accessories and Tazzy Tyres. He also failed to maintain proper financial records for all four companies.

ASIC disqualified Mr Robert John Walker of Rosetta, Tasmania, from managing companies for five years and as a resultof breaching his director’s duties for his involvement in four failed companies, has been disqualified from managing corporations for five years after engaging in illegal phoenix activity. “At the time of ASIC’s decision, the four companies owed unsecured creditors $1,944,418 including $855,121 owed to the ATO,” ASIC said.

“In disqualifying Mr Walker, ASIC relied on supplementary reports lodged by the liquidator of the four companies, Barry Hamilton of Barry Hamilton and Associates.” Mr Walker is disqualified from managing corporations until 2 May 2027. Mr Walker has the right to seek a review of ASIC’s decision by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

BOOST YOUR BUSINESS SIGNAGES By Glenn Martin

In business, first impressions matter. This impression can make all the difference to a potential customer and as such, signs are an important marketing element for businesses. Even in the age of digital media, websites, social media, eye catching signs can vastly improve your customer reach and make an impact to attract more attention. A study conducted by The Signage Foundation found that “good signage yields information to potential buyers, reduces transaction costs and improves well-being.” Additionally, “better information allows buyers and sellers to find each other for a transaction.” Signage can be thought of as an extension of your company’s online presence, and vice-versa. A business can easily become a major part of a community by including signs that align with the aesthetics of the area. Recognisable to every passer by, building signs become a part of the community’s mental map of the neighbourhood. One way to increase your business presence is by having a cohesive branding plan. Part of this plan should include signs appropriate for your industry, and a recognisable logo that can be used across other platforms, including on your vehicles.

There are several types of signs that can enhance your business branding. Each of these can be customized to complement your company’s overall branding. Signarama’s sign experts work with businesses to ensure a branding plan is in place so that all signage is complementary to each other and to the surrounding environment. • • • • • • • • •

Panel Signs Wayfinding & Directional Signs Parking & Traffic Signs Vehicle Graphics Illuminated Signs Dimensional Lettering Informational Signs Window Graphics Flags and A-Frames

When designing your business’s signs, it is important to consider the location or placement of the signs. The signs should clearly indicate your business name and any other important information (i.e., phone number, website URL, etc.). NATURE & CONSERVATION By Liz Sanzaro

By now, the Election is over and no one wants to hear anything about elections for a very long time. However, in November we have a State Election and all that entails. Our Croydon Conservation Society will be asking people to contact their local MP about an issue that we have been working on for many months now, and have supporters from many different municipalities and community groups across the wider Melbourne. We are focussing on only one issue. Which is, we have a State Law for illegal tree removal, that is being unused or under used. Illegal tree removal, happens regularly for a variety of reasons • • • • • • • •

People become scared of a tree, whenever we have gales of wind, they want it out People want to maximise the dollars, when selling, in case a developer wants the block People are getting older and can no longer clean their gutters of leaves People are harassed by their neighbours about the mess that seeds and leaves cause People have previously planted a tree too close to the house, and cracks are appearing People want to use Solar panels on their roof, and it is shaded by a tree (false economy) People think their garden is starved of water due to a large tree The list goes on.

The one common denominator is People. Some of these reasons are valid, and

A law that isn’t worth the paper it is written on most tree removal companies, rather than qualified arborists, will confirm concerns. It is very good business for them. A Conservation group however is concerned about the wildlife, birds, insects, lizards, possums, the list goes on. Where is their right to a home? And how do we conserve biodiversity? We are also aware of loss of shade, causing heat sinks in urban areas. A tree will reduce the temperature of a house with shade, and it is free. So, over the next months, we are asking the State Government to set a mandatory fee for illegal removal, so that Councils can apply a fine, easily to the land owner. Hopefully this will be sufficient in value, to deter people from environmental destruction at a whim. Currently the fine is set between $2,000 to $20,000. But to achieve this requires a Council to engage a lawyer and take the matter to the magistrate’s court, which is costly, time consuming, and often then watered down by a Magistrate who

does not appreciate the value of loss of Bio-diversity. The same Victorian Government that has this waffly law, has just released a paper Parliamentary inquiry into Ecosystem Decline https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/ file_uploads/LCEPC_59-05_Ecosystem_ decline_in_Vic_Y9rT7Z1v.pdf

In March 2022, the State Government's Environmental infrastructure report has recommended tree canopy target for Melbourne’s growth areas. (ie the West & North west) The Legislative Assembly Environment & Planning Committee inquiry also urged the state government to adopt a consistent framework for tree canopy targets and stronger tree canopy controls across Melbourne.

How to conquer 6 regrets before you die who often lived with the family when the other grandparent died. Grandparents have wisdom and patience that parents often don’t possess. Their wealth of knowledge, the bonds they create between generations, connecting values, shared history and ancestry cannot be underestimated. How sad to find out about your grandparent’s wonderful life at their funeral. Why not book time for a cuppa and ask them about their lives and what is important to them. You may be surprised! 6.

ACCREDITED EDITOR By Susan Pierotti

Many people have regrets of things they didn’t do, things left undone, things they would do differently if given another chance. Here are six oft-quoted regrets: 1. I didn’t take enough risks As children, we are taught to be careful. ‘Don’t touch the saucepan when it’s on the stove’. ‘Put sunscreen on when you go outside.’ ‘Don’t talk to strangers.’ These are all good, but sometimes the child grows into an adult who is overly cautious instead of seizing the moment. They cramp innovation and leadership capabilities of those around them and, of course, pass on their risk-averse rules for living to the next generation. There’s nothing quite like getting a diagnosis of a life-threatening illness to put things into perspective. Given your situation now, would you have taken more risks? 2. I didn’t plan ahead We need to plan some areas of our lives. From the most simple (such as being able to pay the credit card on time) to more complex (taking a job with less pay but better promotional prospects) – planning will help you achieve your dreams. Many people say that they are going to do something ‘one day’. Guess what? Every day is ‘one day’, so plan it out now.

3.

I didn’t have anything to leave as a legacy Do you wonder if what you’re leaving behind is worth anything? People who’ve just retired may wonder what all the work they did over four decades was for. Elderly parents often muse over whether they brought up their children all right. Unlike many cultures, our Western society has no ceremony that honours our elders. Yet they have lived through extraordinary times, they had resilience long before it became a Covid buzzword, they have wisdom to share – but who’s listening? 4.

I wish I had touched more lives and inspired more people Related to leaving a legacy is knowing that when you’re gone, you will have left the world a better place. Each of us probably has a favourite schoolteacher, someone in authority who influenced how and what we learnt and possibly even inspired us with our choice of career. Perhaps your influencer was a family member – a grandmother, an uncle. Whoever it was, they had an impact on your life. We want to feel that we have also influenced others. When a younger work colleague tells you that they have learnt so much from your example, you feel humble but grateful. Yet people’s influence is often unrecognised, their inspiration unaccounted for. I didn’t talk with my grandparents about their lives Most families today consist of Mum, Dad and the kids. But not so long ago , it included grandparents, one of whom

I didn’t stop to appreciate the moment We live in a world that is getting faster and faster. All too often, it needs a crisis to slow us down. Instead of waiting for the catastrophe to occur, why not slow down to appreciate the little things. Be thankful for your life and celebrate your achievements. How to conquer 6 regrets If you don’t want to experience these regrets, there is one easy solution – record your life story! A life story professional has the skills to draw out long-forgotten memories, the sensitivity to reveal the hard parts, the privilege of honouring a life well lived. Take a risk and tell your story. Plan to do it now, not ‘one day’ when you’re too ill to recall anything. You will be able to leave a legacy that lives beyond your lifetime. Inspire your family members with your amazing achievements. Your younger family members will be thrilled to know more about you. And enjoy the process, the moment of telling your life now. Single Touch Payroll (STP) – Phase 2 ATO wants you to start reporting Directors Fees By Warren Stybosch

Single touch payroll (STP) reporting has been expanded. This expansion is known as STP phase 2. If you a director paying yourself directors fees then you need to be aware of the new reporting requirements which started at 1st July 2021. “Some digital service providers needed more time to update their products and have applied for deferrals, which cover their customers. This means that when you can start Phase 2 reporting depends on when your payroll product is ready,” the ATO said. “If you haven’t already started Phase 2 reporting, make sure you ask your provider when their product will be ready if you don’t already know.” As an employer, the ATO said it was important that employers are across the changes required, and businesses are getting ready to start phase 2 reporting. “This includes checking if you need to make changes to payroll pay codes/ categories so they align with Phase 2 requirements and reviewing allowances you pay and how they need to be reported in Phase 2,” the ATO said. “Businesses need to understand changes to salary sacrifice reporting and understand how to assign an income type to each payment.” The ATO said amounts paid to closely held payees should now be reported through STP. There are concessional reporting options for closely held payees reporting that include reporting actual payments on or before the date of payment (along with your arm’s length employees). You need to keep accurate business records that demonstrate the type of amounts you pay to your closely held payees. This will help you to determine whether you have paid amounts that you need to report in STP. If you only pay amounts that do not need to be reported in STP (such as trust distributions or loans to directors),

Some common examples of amounts you might pay to a closely held payee include:

Type of amount

STP reporting required

Salary or wages

Yes - in scope for STP

Director's fees

Yes - in scope for STP

Distributions to a beneficiary of a trust

No - not in scope for STP

Dividends paid to shareholder

No - not in scope for STP

Amounts that are loan from the business

No - not in scope for STP

then your business records should also demonstrate this. Example Company A's directors are closely held payees. The directors draw money from the business throughout the year. When a director draws money, it is promptly recorded as a loan to that director. At the end of each month, the balance of the loan is reduced to zero by payment of a directors' fee to the director. The transactions that are promptly recorded as a loan do not need to be reported through STP, as they are amounts that are not in scope for STP and Company A has business records which demonstrate that. Company A has STP reporting obligations

when they pay the directors' fee at the end of each month, as directors' fees are an amount that is within the scope of STP. They need to choose one of the three methods for reporting these amounts through STP. “We have resources to help you understand the changes,” the ATO said. “You can also seek the advice of your tax or BAS professional or payroll provider.” See also: • • •

Air Leakage And What To Do About It ARCHITECT By Kathy Ismail

Now that we are coming into winter, you may notice two things: your heating bills have gone up and you are feeling more air draughts. These may have one and the same cause – air leakage. Air leakage occurs when outside air enters your home or office and inside, heated air leaves, both through cracks and openings in walls, roofs and around open features such as windows and chimneys. During the winter months, it becomes far more difficult to heat a building to the desired temperature which pushes your heating bill up, a sure indication of wasted energy. Air leakage can also contribute to moisture problems that can affect your health and the structure’s durability. It’s in everyone’s best interest to make homes and offices as airtight as possible. The first step is to identify the cause. Here is an overview of some of the ways uncontrolled air gets into a building. Construction design Buildings with dropped ceilings, angled staircase ceilings and knee walls (short, upper-level walls that fit to the slope of a roof) often lack an additional layer of plaster or drywall. Sometimes the areas behind skirting boards may lack proper insulation too. Block the airflow in the space under the roof by filling up plastic bags with unfaced fibreglass insulation. Placing reflective foil over the problem areas also works. Basements and garages Buildings with basements and built-in garages are more prone to air leaks because the cold air rises directly from the foundations. Older homes may need extensive modifications in the basement area. Caulking the gaps is an excellent stopgap measure and doors can be weatherstripped.

Doors and windows The most significant leaks occur around doors and windows. That’s where you feel the most draughts and drops in temperature. You can combat these air leaks by weatherstripping every window and door, including the manhole door into the roof. If the windows don’t open, caulking can work as well. For old buildings, the doors and windows often need a full reconstruction. Install new and better quality doors and windows; the benefits are significant. For new buildings, it’s important to select high quality and doors that seal well. Recessed lights This form of lighting is a common source of air leakage. Each light needs to be insulated separately, which can be timeconsuming. In the case of new homes, the owners might be advised to opt for a different way to position lights. Pipes and kitchen units Air leaks are common around sink and dishwasher pipes. Check also the panel behind kitchen counters and appliances. These gaps can be due to construction design or plumbing repairs. Caulk them with acrylic latex caulk if the gaps are smaller than ½ cm across. If you have larger gaps (up to 8 cm), soft foam is necessary. This is affordable and easy to use. Electric cables and fittings Any electric cable through your wall (for instance, from an air conditioner or burglar alarm) can leave a gap for air to come through.

Find all the draughts around electric fittings and other installations and caulk them. Chimneys and flues According to building regulations, builders must leave a space between metal flues and the framing around them. Clearly, this leads to air leakage. Fireplace flues are made from metal, and over time the metal can warp or break, creating another channel for air loss. Cut aluminium flashing to size, slot it into place using silicone caulk, then form an aluminium cylinder around the flue pipe and cut along the top and the bottom edge. To seal your flue when not in use, consider an inflatable chimney balloon. Inflatable chimney balloons fit beneath your fireplace flue when not in use, are made from durable plastic, and can be removed easily and reused hundreds of times. All things considered, airtight buildings are safer and more comfortable to live in. They are also far more energy efficient, which increases their value in many ways. Generally speaking, architects design plans to eliminate air leaks as much as possible while providing controlled ventilation. Serving coffee – your food business’s new selling point! COMMERCIAL COFFEE MACHINE By Ivana Smith

It’s tempting from time to time to get takeaway for the evening meal, isn’t it. After all, at the end of a long workday or watching your kids play outdoors in their weekend sports matches, who wants to cook? So you go to your local fish and chips or pizza shop. But winter is upon us and cold days are merging into colder evenings. The queue to order is always out the door and you just know that you won’t get your food for at least a quarter of an hour. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you could have a truly great tasting cup of coffee for just a dollar or two while you waited? If you are the owner or franchisee holder of a takeaway operation, take note. Fast food, good coffee From the customer point of view, being able to buy a coffee while they wait for their takeaway might seem simple. But we know that there are heaps of things to consider. You will need to buy, store and wash cups and spoons. If you choose paper and plastic ones, they also take up space. Knowing how fussy folks are about the quality of coffee they drink, where do you buy your coffee? Where will you store it so that it stays fresh? How about the milk, sugar and hot chocolate? Don’t expect that your customers will pile up the cups neatly or put the paper cups in a bin. Once they have their food order, they’ll be out the door and you’ll be left to clean up the mess. This is just the beginning. You will need to make room in your food outlet for the supplies but also for making the drinks. Will your staff be crossing the area of takeaway food production to get to the milk in the fridge? Do you have room for two fridges? Talking about staff, do you have the capital to pay extra staff just to deal with coffee making?

Adding in-house coffee to your menu could be time-consuming and expensive. However, it could become a great selling point, getting customers into your pizza shop instead of the one around the corner. What do you do? (Read on!)

box that fits snugly in a corner or on a quarter of a table. The environmentally friendly paper cups take up no room. Space issues solved!

Catering and coffee Did you know that caterers often don’t include coffee making in their catalogues? Food can be made ahead of time and delivered on flat trays but coffee must made on the spot and requires bulkier equipment.

Coffee is sourced from farmers in places such as Papua New Guinea, providing them with a much needed income. The coffee is therefore not grown in commercial quantities and is mostly free of pesticides. The fresh beans come to your premises with supplies of sugar, hot chocolate powder, teaspoons, cups and lids, enough for a week. Supply issues also solved!

Caterers often assume that they will be delivering and serving in a venue that already has facilities for making hot drinks. However, this is not always the case.

There is no mess to clean (who just shouted ‘hooray’?). The coffee machine supplier tends to machine and fills up the supplies once a week, so that you don’t have to.

People like to end a beautifully prepared meal with a cup of fragrant, flavoursome coffee. If you’re a caterer, do you now invest in a cumbersome machine and use your funds to source and buy coffee pods or grounds, and bring milk and sugar in containers along with cups and saucers, adding to the amount you have to carry into the venue?

And all for the price of a cup of coffee! Hiring a coffee machine for your food business could be the next best thing you’ve ever done!

A new selling point for your food business Providing coffee to customers is not the problem. The problem is staff time, money, storage, sourcing products and drink receptacles and so on. What if someone could do all that for you? A coffee machine is a roughly square

MORTGAGE BROKERING

Understanding Lender’s Mortgage Insurance

By Reece Droscher

As a mortgage broker I see a lot of clients who are wanting to get into the property market, but they don’t have a huge deposit. They may have been renting for a while, or are first home buyers who have been saving but keep seeing property prices rising, so rather than waiting longer to build their savings they want to buy now. The way lenders are able to assist borrowers in these cases is by taking out Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI). What is LMI?

Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) is insurance that a lender takes out to insure itself against the risk of not recovering the outstanding loan balance if you, the borrower, are unable to meet your loan payments and the property is sold for less than the outstanding loan balance. Photo by Monstera from Pexels

In layman’s terms, if a borrower cannot meet their loan repayments and no other resolution is found, the security property may need to be sold to cover the outstanding loan amount. In this situation, sometimes the house is sold for less than the amount of the loan balance, leaving an amount still owing. If this happens, you as the borrower are obliged to repay that outstanding amount of the loan. The LMI insurer will cover the loss for the lender in accordance with the LMI policy. Where there is a shortfall, the LMI insurer may then ask you, the borrower, to repay this directly to them, rather than to the lender. When would LMI be required?

has a 5% deposit and needs to borrow 95% of the property purchase price, will pay a higher premium than someone who has a 10% deposit to contribute, as there is a higher risk to the insurer when a borrower needs to borrow a higher percentage of a property value. As the LMI premium is a cost of providing finance, the lender passes the cost of the LMI premium on to the borrower. They can pay the premium at settlement of the loan through their savings, or by adding the cost of LMI to their loan which will result in a higher loan and repayment amount.

Where you don’t have a large deposit (usually 20% of the property price) but have managed to save at least 5%, a lender will apply to a Lender’s Mortgage Insurance provider to cover your loan. LMI reduces the risk of loss to the lender if you have difficulty meeting your loan repayments, making it more likely that they will lend the money to you to buy a property even though you don’t have a 20% deposit.

How do I avoid needing LMI?

LMI therefore allows home buyers to get into the property market a lot earlier than would be possible if everyone had to save at least a 20% deposit.

There are other avenues that some lenders also have available, such as Family Guarantees where parents can assist their children get into the property market by providing their home as further security. Some lenders also have specific policies relating to applicants who are professionals in certain industries where they may waive the LMI requirement, even when they only have a 10% deposit.

Who Pays for LMI? The cost of LMI is variable, as premiums are calculated based on the overall risk in the proposed loan. A borrower who

There are a couple of ways to avoid having to pay for LMI on your loan. 1. 2.

Save at least a 20% deposit. For first home buyers, access some of the Government assistance schemes such as the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme, the New Home Guarantee or Single Parents Guarantee Scheme.

Common Misconceptions with LMI When speaking with borrowers who have taken a loan and paid for LMI there is some lack of understanding as to who LMI protects. They are often surprised to learn that LMI protects the lender and it in no way provides any protection to the borrower. Only the lender can make a claim under a LMI policy. Lenders Mortgage Insurance is also not the same as Mortgage Protection Insurance, which is another type of insurance cover that can protect a borrower from defaulting on their loan should they lose their income. LMI is a tool to help buyers get into the property market earlier than they otherwise could, as saving a 20% deposit is very difficult with the increase in costs of living combined with rises in the property market. At SHL Finance we have helped a lot of our clients improve their situation by working with them to achieve their financial goals, and we would love the opportunity to help anyone wanting to buy but are unsure whether they can. ASIC takes Online influencer to court By Warren Strybosch

In our April edition we wrote about the new laws surrounding influencers; notably, that ASIC has warned social media influencers that they may face substantial risks and penalties if they promote financial products and services online.

different share trading accounts, held in the names of friends and relatives, to manipulate the share price of 20 different listed stocks.

or a fine of up to $765,000, or both.

ASIC has previously warned about social media led ‘pump and dump’ campaigns.

Recently, ASIC has taken an influencer to court and they have been convicted of charges under s1041D of the Corporations Act, in relation to their online posts on HotCopper.

“ASIC continues to act against this form of market manipulation that threatens the integrity of markets. Posting on social media to coordinate ‘pump and dump’ activity in listed stocks is an offence under the Corporations Act,” the corporate regulator stressed.

ASIC is serious about stopping influencers posting ‘general advice’ via social media in relation to financial products and services. Stating you are providing the advice under the guise of ‘general advice’ or that you are doing so as a ‘financial counsellor’ will also not suffice. If you do not hold the appropriate financial planning qualifications and/ or have an Australian Financial Services Licence, then you should not be providing this type of advice. Not only does this apply to influencers but also to mortgage brokers selling personal insurances and accountants providing superannuation advice.

In a statement issued by the corporate regulator, it confirmed that on 6 June 2022, Gabriel Govinda, known online as Fibonarchery, pleaded guilty to 23 charges of manipulation of listed stocks on the Australian Securities Exchange and 19 charges of illegal dissemination of information relating to the manipulation. ASIC found that between September 2014 to July 2015, Mr Govinda used 13

It also noted a concerning trend of social media posts being used to coordinate ‘pump and dump’ activity in listed stocks, which may amount to market manipulation in breach of the Corporations Act. Mr Govinda faces a maximum penalty for each charge of 10 years' imprisonment

In March 2019, the maximum penalty for these offences was increased to 15 years.

ASIC has provided enough warnings to all of these groups and now are pursuing them in court.

Don’t Double Dip Your Deductions This Tax Time ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding people not to make the mistake of double dipping their deductions in their tax return this year. Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh explained “Around 8.4 million Australians claimed nearly $19.8 billion in workrelated expenses in 2021. That’s a lot of deductions so we want to make sure you get it right the first time. It’s important you claim what you’re entitled to – no more, no less.” When people prepare their tax return, it’s important to remember the rules for claiming different types of workrelated expenses. What can be claimed depends on the type of job, individual circumstances, and whether there are the required records to support the claim. “While some people make genuine mistakes, we do see people trying to gain an unfair advantage by claiming incorrect or false expenses. A mistake that we often see in tax returns is people claiming expenses twice.” “You wouldn’t double dip your chip, so don’t double dip your deductions” Mr Loh said. “Remember, we use sophisticated data analytics to monitor for incorrect information and you risk being audited or penalised for deliberately providing incorrect information.” Below are some ‘double dipping’ mistakes the ATO sees when people lodge their tax returns each year. Working from home expenses and the shortcut method “One in three Aussies claimed working from home expenses in their tax return last year and we expect this trend to continue” Mr Loh said.

A common mistake we see is people using the working from home shortcut method to claim their working from home expenses and then double dipping, claiming additional amounts in their return for expenses such as their mobile phone and internet bills, as well as the decline in value of equipment and furniture. When the working from home shortcut method is used to claim working from home expenses, it is all-inclusive. There are three methods available to claim a deduction for working from home expenses depending on individual circumstances, the shortcut, fixed rate and actual cost methods. The method that gives people the best outcome can be used, as long as the eligibility and record-keeping requirements for their chosen method are observed. Taxpayers can use the home office expenses calculator to help them work out which method will give them the best outcome. “While the traditional methods require receipts, paperwork and other record keeping, the shortcut method only requires a record of hours worked – diary entries or timesheets will suffice,” Mr Loh said. When claiming working from home expenses using the shortcut method, the amount needs to be included at the Other work-related expenses question in tax returns with ‘COVID-hourly rate’ in the description field. If a method other than the shortcut method is used in later years and you want to claim depreciation for an expensive purchase such as a laptop, the correct records for that item must be kept. “Getting your tax return right is simple if you have the right records. Make sure you have your records before you lodge your tax return and keep your records after you’ve lodged, in case we have

any questions. The easiest way to keep track of your records is with the ATO app” Mr Loh said. “Even if you choose to lodge your tax return with a registered tax agent, it is still your responsibility to make sure the agent has all the correct records” explains Mr Loh. Car expenses Nearly 3 million people claimed workrelated car expenses in 2021 and one of the most common mistakes was people using the cents per kilometre method to make their claim, and then double dipping by claiming expenses separately such as fuel, car insurance, and registration. The cents per kilometre rate is allinclusive and covers decline in value, registration, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and fuel costs. These expenses can’t be added on top of the rate when calculating deductions. The ATO will also be taking a closer look at claims calculated using the logbook method, to ensure they reflect people’s circumstances coming out of the pandemic. “You must choose your preferred method when calculating car expenses, the cents per kilometre or the logbook method. Just because there is a dip in the road, doesn’t mean you can double dip your car expenses” Mr Loh said. Reimbursed expenses Finally, the ATO is making sure taxpayers aren’t claiming expenses where they have already been reimbursed by their employer. “If your boss has reimbursed your drycleaning costs for your uniform, but you then claim laundry deductions on your tax return, well you’re picking your neighbours’ pockets” Mr Loh said. Pets Feel The Cold Too By Jodie Moore

Winter is officially here. And with it comes the chilly nights, snuggling down with your favourite blanket in front of the heater to stay warm. As a pet owner, you will already be thinking about their needs, wanting them to be as healthy and happy as possible. But with winter here, it can be easy to get it wrong. Your natural inclination is to stay inside where it is warm and dry, and whilst that is important for your pet as well, it is just as important for them to still get outside for some fresh air and, particularly for dogs, a good run around. Timing is important though. Early morning or late evening runs may be too cold for most pets. Just because your pet has fur doesn’t mean they can stand the colder weather. Animals acclimatise to warmer weather and indoor living just as people do.

Small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs, older pets, pets with short coats, pets with conditions such as arthritis, all require extra attention on these cold days. Pay attention to the way your pet behaves. Are they moving slower than usual, seeking out warm places more, shivering or trembling? These are signs your pet is feeling the cold and may need additional bedding, a coat or more shelter. If your pet has access to a heater or fireplace though, you will need to pay attention to their skin as it can dry out if they are too close to a heat source or may even burn. require extra attention on these cold days. Keep an eye on your pet’s diet as well. They may want to eat more as they can burn up a lot of energy keeping themselves warm but, especially if your pet is indoors most of the time, you don’t want to over feed them either and then have to try and get rid of their ‘winter weight’ next spring. Ensure they have access to plenty of fresh sources of water and check any that are kept outside regularly in case they freeze up and your pet is unable to drink it. If you regularly groom you pet, it is important to maintain that routine to avoid fur that gets overgrown and matted. You may not want to trim it as short as normal, but a regular groom will keep your pet in top condition. All pet owners understand the joy a pet can bring. By following these simple guidelines, your pet will thrive during the colder months.

Work begins on rebooting digital economy Marion Rae (Australian Associated Press)

Australian businesses who could be providing goods and services have been missing out on billions of dollars of government contracts, according to Labor. A Made in Australia Office is expected to be established within the prime minister’s own department to support local firms. Labor has also promised to fix the reach and quality of the NBN and keep it in public ownership, with 90 per cent of Australians to have access to world-class gigabit speeds by 2025.

Australia’s peak body for innovation technology has called for a digital economy minister to be appointed within the Labor cabinet to urgently fix the crippling skills shortage. “Our sector could easily employ 1.5 million Australians in the next few years if the government addresses our skills shortage and supports the sector,” Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) CEO Ron Gauci said. The proposed role would oversee policy and regulation of the tech sector, promote new training and education, and make Australia a leading digital government so the nation can achieve top 10 digital economy status by 2030. Australia has dropped on the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s Global Innovation Index during the Morrison government, having fallen five places to 25 over the past three years.

The sector fights for staff in a global talent pool, and risks the loss of groundbreaking ideas to rival economies without internationally competitive research, tax and investment policy settings. Commercialisation of Australian intellectual property needs greater support to continue to deliver growth and jobs in Australia, ensuring our IP is not sold overseas, Mr Gauci said. Australian Computer Society president Nick Tate said Labor’s plans to build an advanced manufacturing sector will require a strong national investment in digital skills as well as incentives for business to invest in emerging technologies. Under the Future Made in Australia policy, Labor pledged to provide up to $15 billion of capital through loans, equity and guarantees to projects in resources, agriculture, transport, medical science, defence technology, and renewable energy and low emissions technologies.

Civica executive Ben Cowling says the ambitious reform agenda for the social housing, health and care sectors depends on accelerating the pace of digital transformation across public services. The Insurance Council has urged Labor to reset policy to bolster the resilience of Australia’s digital environment, including a sustainable cyber insurance market. The AIIA is calling for a separate research and development software tax incentive and an expansion of the limited scope of a “patent box” proposed by the previous government. The planned patent box would have taxed business income from Australian medical and biotechnology patents at a concessional rate of 17 per cent, effective July 1. But ex-Treasurer Josh Frydenberg failed to pass the 2021/22 budget measure into law before the end of the last parliament.

SUPER GUARANTEE CHANGES TO TAKE AFFECT 1ST JULY 2022 Employers are reminded that from 1 July 2022, that all employees can be eligible for super guarantee (SG), regardless of how much they earn. The $450 per month eligibility threshold related to SG has been removed and so every dollar earned will now attract SG. However, employers need only to pay super for workers under 18 when they work more than 30 hours in a week. The ATO also reminded employers that the SG rate will also increase from 10% to 10.5% on 1 July 2022. As a result, employers will need to use the new rate to calculate super on payments made to employees on or after 1 July, even if some or all of the pay period is for work done before 1 July.

Managing Mastitis LACTATION CONSULTANT By Dr. Joanna Strybosch

What is it? Mastitis is a common inflammatory condition of the breast tissue. It is estimated that one in four breastfeeding women experience mastitis at some point in time, most commonly in their first 26 weeks postpartum. It is a condition that presents with red, tender, hot and/or swollen areas of the breast and flu like symptoms such as fever, aches and chills. It can vary in severity from mild through to a more severe condition. It is possible to develop mastitis more than once in the same lactation as well as in subsequent lactations. What causes it ? The most common form of mastitis is acute lactational mastitis (ALM). Sometimes there is an infectious agent most frequently staphylococcus aureus. However often there is no clear infectious pathogen involved. In these cases, the most common cause is inflammation due to milk stasis. When there is inadequate milk removal from the breast, milk builds up within a lobe of the breast causing inflammation and the characteristic intense local pain of mastitis. Acute lactational mastitis has a sudden onset of symptoms and usually runs a short course. The known risk factors for mastitis are the wearing of a tight bra, previous mastitis, no breastfeeding support, long times between feeds, hyperlactation, use of nipple shields and quick weaning. These situations lead to milk stasis and/or inadequate milk removal. In addition, nipple wounds are a risk factor for staph aureus infections. How do I manage it? The first step in the management of ALM is to keep the breasts as empty as possible. This means breastfeeding more often and making sure that baby is properly positioned and latched for effective milk removal. If baby is unwilling or unable to feed, milk removal must be done through hand expression or use of a breast pump.

Mastitis can be an extremely painful condition. Mothers need to be cared for and supported to continue breastfeeding while recovering from mastitis so as to not prematurely wean. They need lots of rest, which is vital for a quick recovery. They also need to remain well hydrated and to eat well. The use of cold compresses on the affected breast can be soothing as well as short periods of warmth on the breast just before feeding in order to help the milk flow. Practically, mums need help with their baby and any other siblings as well as help around the home, in order to allow her to have adequate rest. What if it doesn’t go away? If symptoms do not resolve within 12 to 24 hours or if the mother is feeling very unwell she should continue with the above measures and seek medical treatment. In these cases, antibiotics will be required. After commencing antibiotic treatment usually the symptoms of fever and chills disappear within 12 hours, although the pain, redness and breast lump will take longer to resolve.

breast frequently is usually the most effective way to remove milk from the breast and resolve mastitis and should always be encouraged. What else can I do? Recent studies have shown that the risk of developing lactational mastitis is significantly reduced by the daily consumption of fermented foods and drinks, including kefir and boza, homemade and conventional yoghurts and pickles. Consuming a diversity of these foods was also found to be protective. In contrast, the consumption of probiotic supplements for the management of mastitis is unproven. Mastitis is a common inflammatory condition of breast characterised by local pain and redness and flu-like symptoms. Management involves the effective removal of milk by frequent breastfeeding or expressing/pumping if required. The majority of cases will resolve with this management. Antibiotic treatment may be required in some cases.

If symptoms do not improve within 48 hours see your doctor again for further help. ALM can lead to a breast abscess if not managed correctly or treated adequately.

See your lactation specialist for further advice.

Does it affect my milk? During mastitis, a mother’s milk will taste more salty but it is perfectly safe for her baby to drink. Putting her baby to the

Personal Insurances: What is it and are you wasting your money on it? FINANCIAL PLANNING By Warren Strybosch

Last year I met with a couple who were in the early fifties. They wanted to review their financial situation to make sure they were on the right track leading into retirement. As part of their pre-retirement planning, we had to review their personal insurances. Whilst this was not an area, they had considered needing reviewing, it is an important part of their planning to get right. Why? Simply put, insurances cost money. It is either being paid for out of cash flow or it is being paid for from superannuation. At the end of the day, your personal insurances premiums will have an impact on how much you will have in retirement. On the flip side, if you don’t have enough insurances in place and you suffer an illness and/or injury, you might have to sell some of your assets to help cover future costs or the loss of income because of sustaining a said injury or illness. The loss of assets prior to retirement can have a devasting impact on one’s future retirement aspirations. My analysis of the couple’s situation was that, whilst they had enough assets e.g., two investment properties and plenty of superannuation, they still should consider holding on to their Income Protection at the very least. They had discussed cancelling all of their insurances as they did not feel the need to hold on to it anymore; after all, they had two investment properties. During my review, I referred the clients on to a mortgage broker to refinance their investment loans. Whilst they were refinancing their loans, even the mortgage broker encouraged them to hold on to their income protection and life insurance until they either had paid off their loans or had reach retirement age. The outcome, the couple believed they could self-insure and made the decision to cancel all their insurances. Selfinsure, as it states, is where you decide to use your own assets or have a plan in place to cover any future insurable costs without the need to rely on any insurance – basically, they were going alone on this. Unfortunately, for the couple, strategy struck. Two years later, the wife was

diagnosed with terminal cancer. The couple had to sell both investment properties to help cover medical bills and the associated costs of trying to battle the horrible disease. They ended up losing all their assets they had built up during their working life. It was horrible to watch her struggle with the cancer and it was made worse that they were now worried about their future livelihoods. A few years back, a different client, that I had inherited from another financial advisor, rang me up and wanted to cancel all his insurance cover immediately. The male client, in his sixties, was very irate and accused me of not helping him last year when he had suffered a mild heart attack. Given the insurer told him recently he was not entitled to a payout, he told me what he thought of me and what I could do with the insurances. I acknowledged he was upset, apologized for my lack of service that I provided to him last year (even though I could not recall speaking to him) and proceeded to ask him a few questions. I learned he had undergone surgery and had a stent put in one of his arteries. Whilst I was talking to him I looked up his policy and discovered he had income protection in place and trauma plus cover. I asked the client if I could enquire with the insurer on his behalf because I felt that he might be able to put a claim in. The client was incredulous that I believe he might be entitled to something. He was angry and reiterate the claim had already been denied. I explained that I felt he might be entitled to a part

payment and that his income protection might also come into play. He admitted he had not enquired about the income protection but was very dubious about the part trauma payment. Even though he was not impressed with me he allowed me to make some enquires on his behalf. We agreed I would call him back as soon as I heard something. I rang the insurer and enquired about his heart attack and whether a full claim was payable. The insurer had his information on file and as they had explained to the client, he was not entitled to a trauma payment. I then proceeded to ask about a partial payment because of the ‘trauma plus’ part of the policy. Ironically, the insurer did not pick up that he had ‘trauma plus’ and agreed that under ‘trauma plus’ the client might be entitled to a part claim. I then enquired about his Income Protection as well, and sure enough, the client had never made a claim under his Income Protection even though he had many months off work due to his heart attack. I rung the client back up and explained what I had found and that not only did I believe he would be entitled to a partial payment, but I also felt he might be entitled to an Income Protection claim. The client was still annoyed and thought I might be making all of this up but was willing to go along with the process – he did not want to take the chance of missing out in case I might be right. To shorten this story, the end result was that the client was not entitled to one partial trauma payment but in fact two

partial trauma payments as he had two stents put in at over a period of 12 months. Also, he was entitled to many months of Income Protection payments. The result was that he received well over $200,000 in payments. A year later, he had another heart attacked and received the full trauma payout resulting in another $250,000 in payments. To my surprise, after several conversations with him, the client admitted that he had never spoken to me in the past and had only dealt directly with the insurer. I was relieved because I make it my point to try and look after clients who are going through a trauma event. I am now invited to pop in anytime to visit him and his family. I could bring up many more stories related to personal insurances. My intention here is to highlight the

importance of having personal insurances or at least the right amount of cover in place. Also, having a financial advisor, who has had experience in this space can not only save you money but may be able to help you at claim time get what your entitled too. Over the proceeding months I will go through the four main personal insurances: Income Protection, Trauma Cover, Life cover and Total and Permanent Disability. I will talk about the pros and cons of having each type of cover and hopefully help you to, at the very least, give some thought as to whether you need to make any timely changes to your own personal insurance. After all, you might be wasting your money, or you might be risking your money in the future. You won’t know until you take a look.

Records Forecast For Aust Agriculture Finbar O’Mallon (Australian Associated Press)

Australian agriculture is expected to deliver an eye watering $80.4 billion of produce in the next year, the second biggest amount on record, while exports are forecast to be the highest ever. It comes despite producers continuing to face challenges over workforce shortages and inflated input prices, with world fertilisers at their highest levels since 2008. ABARES Executive Director Jared Greenville said next financial year will be another “standout” for the sector. “We’re seeing record production values and export values across our winter crop range, including wheat, barley and canola, but we’re also seeing strong growth in the horticulture sector which is set to hit a record value as well,” Dr Greenville told AAP. “Horticulture is an industry that’s grown close to 115 per cent in real terms over the past 20 years … a big part of that is access to international consumers.” The ABARES quarterly outlook, produced by the department of agriculture, reflects a combination of favourable Australian conditions and very high world food prices. A poor outlook for world food production, on top of war in Ukraine and trade restrictions, are all pushing commodity prices higher. The gross value of agricultural production is forecast to be down slightly from last year’s high of $83.1 billion. The total value of the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors is forecast to be $86.2 billion. Agricultural exports are forecast to be a record $65 billion in 2022-23, although continuing disruptions to the global supply chain and high shipping prices present ongoing challenges, according to the outlook. Grain growers are expected to deliver their fourth largest and second most valuable winter crop on record, due in part to high global grain prices as well as the war.

Above average rainfall from February to April led to flooding, harvest delays and the loss of some crops, but the report found it hasn’t had a significant impact on national totals. While the gross value of all major crop commodities is expected to remain high, the outlook predicts a record $13.5 billion for horticulture, $12.7 billion for wheat and $5.1 billion for canola, both the second highest on record for those commodities. The gross value of production for the livestock sector is also forecast to rise by 1.2 per cent to $35 billion in the next year.

Dairy herds are expected to continue their decline, but higher yields will support a modest increase in production. Food prices globally are now at their highest levels in a decade and are not expected to ease during 2022 or much of 2023. The World Bank has noted food prices have now been rising for two years, and as of April 2022 were 78 per cent above their average between 2015 and 2019, with prices not expected to ease until 2023.

The outlook expects livestock prices will ease from all time highs. While livestock production will grow, the value of exports will fall marginally to $25.1 billion as beef export prices ease.

The impact of the labour shortage is expected to continue for agriculture, particularly horticulture, with the Reserve Bank forecasting the unemployment rate will continue to decline into 2023.

Falling livestock prices are expected to push the value of beef production down slightly by 1.4 per cent to $15.6 billion, and the value of sheepmeat production down by eight per cent to $4.3 billion.

A high domestic supply of wine is expected to bring prices down, exacerbated by a surplus from last year, stagnant domestic consumption and the loss of China as a major importer of Australian red wines.

The outlook predicts the national beef herd will grow by six per cent to 24.2 million head in the next year, while the sheep flock will stabilise at around 69 million head.

The outlook says opportunities will also present for the livestock industry after the trade agreement signed in April between Australia and India.

energy price hikes after 'perfect storm' Dominic Giannini (Australian Associated Press)

A spike in gas prices, liquid fuels and electricity have created a perfect storm within Australia’s energy market. Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the failure of the Liberal government to land an energy policy and put in place infrastructure for renewables has made the domestic market less resilient. “This is the chickens coming home to roost when it comes to almost a decade now of climate change and energy policy failure from our predecessors,” he told reporters in Canberra. “Our first responsibility in times like this is to implement our Powering Australia plan, so we can boost renewables and storage but most of all boost certainty so we can get that investment flowing

… to make our energy markets more predictable.” Dr Chalmers says the spike in gas prices has multiple causes and no easy solutions as he plans discussions with regulators and other ministers to manage increasing costs. “There is no simple mechanism that would immediately take this pressure off the gas price,” he said. “These challenges will not be addressed overnight but it’s important we work hard together to address them.” Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says the cost of living and rising energy prices remain key concerns for the government, with some families struggling to afford turning on the heaters. “We are very well aware of that,” he told the Nine Network. “It is not something we can solve overnight but we will be working very hard with the policies we’ve

29

put forward to get the energy policy settled. “Renewables are going to take a long time. No one is saying it’s not important but that’s going to take some time.” As Labor looks to address the issue, more than 80,000 customers could face energy price hikes of more than double, the CEO of smaller power retailer ReAmped says. Luke Blincoe says he is being upfront with customers by telling them the retailer cannot offer them the best deals, with wholesale electricity costs higher than retail prices. “We thought we would be upfront and tell our customers (that) to get the best deal they would have to leave us. It is gutting for us but it’s the right thing to do,” he told Nine Network. Mr Blincoe said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the exposure of Australia’s domestic gas market to global gas prices resulted in rocketing rises. “The wholesale energy price is effectively set by the gas price and the Australian gas price has now effectively doubled with the global commodity price for gas,” he said. “We’ve seen a really, really steep incline. As late as the last seven days, it has really rocketed away. That’s the driver of the energy prices.” The Australian Energy Regulator has a dedicated price comparison website, Energy Made Easy, which shows offers allowing residential customers to save about $443, or 24 per cent, off their bills. Small businesses can save about $1308, or 29 per cent, by switching.

Company Tax Rates are changing but not everyone is eligible. Did you know that reduced tax rates may be available to eligible entities? These include companies, corporate unit trusts and public trading trusts. If your company is a 'base rate entity', your company tax rate is 25% from the 2021–22 income year onwards. For your company to be a 'base rate entity', it needs to meet the following eligibility criteria: • • •

Your aggregated turnover for the income year is less than the aggregated turnover threshold (which is $50 million from the 2018–19 income year onwards, or $25 million for the 2017–18 income year). If your company earns passive income, it cannot exceed 80% of the company's assessable income in that income year. Passive income can include: corporate distributions and their franking credits; royalties and rent; most income from interest; gains on qualifying securities; and a net capital gain.

The full company tax rate of 30% applies to all companies that are not eligible for this lower company tax rate. The rates are different for previous years and different rules apply. Go to https://www.ato.gov.au/rates/changes-to-company-tax-rates/ to learn more.

Lift your spirits with the Maroondah Lift Project Learn simple and easy strategies to improve your mental wellbeing with the Maroondah Lift Project, with registrations opening on Monday 23 May. The Maroondah Lift Project is a seven-week, evidencebased mental health and wellbeing program commencing Sunday 19 June and is available to all Maroondah residents. The Project brings together scientifically-proven strategies from the fields of neuroscience, positive psychology and lifestyle medicine to improve mental wellbeing. As part of the Project, participants will receive videos each week on different wellbeing topics. Residents can register and complete the sessions online in their own time or join one of our face-to-face groups. Cr Mike Symon, Mayor of Maroondah, hopes that the Maroondah Lift Project will encourage time-poor residents invest in their mental wellbeing. “Although restrictions are easing, the pandemic continues to be a cause of stress and anxiety for some. “The Maroondah Lift Project is a great opportunity to devote a little bit of time each week to supporting and improving your mental wellbeing at a time that is right for you. “If you join online, you can also work through the program at your own pace and encourage your family and friends to join you on the journey.

Dodgy breeders — know the signs Have you recently welcomed a furry friend into your family? You’re not alone! In Maroondah, there are more than 20,000 pets registered with Council, and these numbers have risen significantly over the past 18 months. But do you know if your pet has been ethically bred? With demand for pets increasing during the pandemic, there has also been an increase in scams and illegal behaviour. The Victorian Government has recently released a Choosing a Healthy Pet checklist to help combat scammers and dodgy breeders, which encourages prospective pet owners to make informed decisions when looking for a furry friend.

“Participants can also share their learnings and support each other through the Maroondah Lift Project Facebook group,” Cr Symon said. Dr Darren Morton will be conducting the Maroondah Lift Project. He pleased to be able to offer the Project to all Maroondah residents. “I’m sure you’ll find the videos useful and supportive on your journey to a mentally healthy lifestyle. The beauty of this program is that you can complete the topics at your own pace,” said Dr Morton.

Celebrating gender diversity with IDAHOBIT Day Maroondah City Council is an inclusive organisation that recognises and supports the diversity of our community. This year marks the 32-year anniversary of 17 May 1990, when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Every 17 May, Council celebrates IDAHOBIT Day (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia). IDAHOBIT Day recognises LGBTQIA+ people around the world and acknowledges the work that still needs to be done to ensure true inclusion and acceptance within the community. To acknowledge and celebrate IDAHOBIT, Council will fly the Pride flag in Croydon, and a virtual Progress Pride flag on the big screen in Eastland Town Square support for and commitment to reducing the barriers faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, both locally and across the globe. Approximately 10 to 12 per cent of Maroondah’s population (over 10,000 Maroondah residents) identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual (LGBTQIA+). Research shows that homophobic discrimination and heterosexism (i.e. the favouring of opposite-sex sexuality and relationships) has resulted in transgender people aged 18 and over being 11 times more likely to attempt suicide in their lifetime; approximately 42 per cent of homosexual/ bisexual people aged 16 and over meeting the criteria for a mental disorder and have had symptoms in the past 12 months; lesbian, gay and bisexual people aged 16 and over being three and a half times more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety in their lifetime. Councillor Mike Symon, Mayor of Maroondah, said the day is about celebrating the diversity of Maroondah’s community

and making sure the LGBTQIA+ community know they are supported. “We recognise and support our LGBTQIA+ community members and invite all residents to take part in celebrating IDAHOBIT Day this 17 May. “By taking a public stand in support of Maroondah’s LGBTQIA+ community members, Council continues to challenge prejudices and strives to build an inclusive, prejudice-free society, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation,” Cr Symon said. Blue Cross Animals Society of Victoria is a Pro-Life animal shelter that works to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals that come into our care and give them a second chance at life. We rescue cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies whose futures would be bleak without our care. Blue Cross is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the health and happiness of pets since 1966. Abandoned or unwanted, ill or injured – we do what’s needed to give every pet a healthy life in a happy home. As a smaller organisation with recently updated facilities and lots of room specifically for larger dogs, we are able to provide a personalised shelter experience to each of our animals and strive to ensure that each of their needs are understood and catered to. We care for hundreds of animals every year, and our tailor-made service means we not only help each pet find the right person for them, but also do our best to ensure that our customers are able to find a lifelong companion in one of our animals. Unfortunately, due to the nature of animal shelters, some animals tend to get largely overlooked when it comes to adoption, whether it be due to age, health or behavioural requirements. These animals are often waiting for a very special owner to come along, and generally become our ‘long term animals’. Below are just a few of our long-term animals who are waiting for that special someone to come along!

LEO Leo is a very special case who is looking for a dedicated owner who will visit him at the shelter many times before taking him home, has no other animals, and is home majority of the time. Leo will need strict management when visitors come to the home, and when out in public.

LOR Lor is a confident boy who loves the company of his humans but can get a bit overstimulated with patting, so it’s better to leave it to a couple of pats, then let him continue with his own nuzzling. As Lor is FIV+, he will need to be an indoor only cat, but as long as he gets his daily quota of attention and playtime, he’ll be happy as Larry.

TARI Tari is a very special girl with oodles of personality. She is looking for a relaxed, adult-only home with no other animals where she can live the pampered life she’s always dreamed of. Tari loves attention when it’s on her terms but can get a little bit over-stimulated and nippy at times.

All of our adoptions are via appointment only, so if you would like to pay us a visit to meet any of our animals, give us a call to make an appointment!

PUSS Puss is a beautiful senior lady who is looking for a loving retirement home to grow old in, and someone to snuggle up to. Unfortunately for Puss, she displays all the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, and the vets recommend that she stays on medication and a special type of food for the rest of her life.

NOT-FOR-PROFIT STORY

Flicker of Hope The Flicker of Hope Foundation is a charity set up to raise funds to go towards research into Neurofibromatosis. Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a group of genetic disorders that cause tumours to form on nerve tissue. These tumours can develop in the brain, spinal cord and nerves. NF can also cause bone deformities, learning disabilities, hearing loss, vision loss and chronic pain throughout the body. It is more common than cystic fibrosis, yet not many people have heard of it. There are 3 types of NF and my beautiful 8 year old daughter Katie has NF1. Katie has numerous tumours in her brain and one on the base of her brain/top of spine. She was diagnosed at only 18 months old and has endured years of chemotherapy treatment ever since, most recently finishing a three year stint in February 2022. Although Katie’s condition came on as a spontaneous gene mutation at birth, she now has a 50% chance of passing it on to her children, and their children, and so on and so on. Tumours can form at any time, and there is currently no cure. We work hard to raise funds to find better treatment options and hopefully one day, a cure. Katie’s father, Vid Jelo, will be swimming in the Port to Pub in Western Australia on March 18th 2023. This event sees swimmers facing a gruelling 25km open ocean swim from North Fremantle to Rottnest Island. His motivation is: "Katie faces challenges every day of her life. I will challenge myself to do this for her, and for all who are living with NF." The money raised through our GoFundMe page will help Vid get to WA to compete, including his entry fee into the swim and for his accompanying paddler and skipper on the safety boat. Norwood made it back to back wins for the first time this season with an important road win over Berwick on Saturday. We wore a version of the original eye-catching clash strip for the game, a retro all purple jumper with yellow logo and numbers to avoid Berwick's all black home strip. We won the game with strong 2nd and 3rd quarters where we scored 9 goals to open up a 23pt break at the last change. Berwick challenged with the first couple of goals in the last quarter, but we steadied and ran out solid 20pt winners. JB and Lochie Dickson led our goal scorers with 3 apiece. Final scores: Norwood 13.11.89 d Berwick 10.9.69. Best players: Lochie Dickson Tom Maloney Rej Jordon The run into the bye sees us on the road down to Blackburn with a real chance to make it three in a row before we tackle the Old Enemy in North Ringwood. With some good form and some good luck Marty and the boys have the opportunity to set the tone for the back half and a tilt at a top 5 position. Lets get down to Blackburn and help build the momentum

RETIREMENT By Warren Strybosch

The reduction in the superannuation drawdown rate for another 12 months will enable retirees to cope better with the volatility in investment markets, SMSF Association deputy chief executive Peter Burgess says. The Morrison government first introduced a reduction in the minimum annual payment required for account-based pensions, annuities and market-linked pensions during the pandemic in 2020. However, as many retirees and SMSFs continue to be hit by losses in financial markets the government has extended the measure for 12 another 12 months. For clients with APRA-regulated funds, Mr Burgess said it was worth keeping an eye on any communications the client received from the fund explaining how they would apply the measure. “Planners will need to work with their clients to determine whether the minimum pension still meets their client’s income needs,” he said.

61

Minimum pension drawdown rates for FY 22-23 provides relief to retirees. “In most cases, where you have previously chosen the minimum pension amount, the fund will automatically apply the 50 per cent reduction, so it’s a matter of assessing whether [it] still meets their needs with regards to cost of living pressures and the like.” While this recent announcement is simply an extension of the current temporary rules, to ensure the optimal outcome for clients, it is important to understand that the legislation halves the drawdown rates themselves.

For example, the normal 5 per cent drawdown factor for the recipient of an account-based pension aged 65–74 is now 2.5 per cent. It is important for pensioners to make sure they do not fail the minimum draw down pension rules, especially those who operate their own SMSF. If a client requires more than the minimum, then they will need to notify their advisor or the pension provider that they will require a fixed amount rather than the minimum drawdown amount set by government.

POCKETS SPORTS TODAY SURPASSES ANNUAL BUDGET OF $300K AHEAD OF SCHEDULE 3 weekends to go for the Pockets Pro Series, 1 Weekend of the Pockets Pro Challenger and 1 weekend of the Trans-Tasman Pockets Cup is surely going to break the bank. The average businessperson would certainly be quite worried about their investments, but Director Arthur Titus thinks otherwise. “We will continue to look at all the positives surrounding the Pockets Pro Series and how far we’ve come, we have gained deals never seen before in the industry and we have a good product which just needs a bit more time. Time which costs Money.” With that being said, Pockets have substantially reduced sponsorship pricing which can be found on our website https://www.pockets. com.au/sponsorships and are seeking more sponsors of the Pool community to get involved. A message from the President Welcome to the home of the Norwood Football club. On behalf of the committee, members and staff we look forward to sharing with you all that this outstanding and dynamic sporting organisation has to offer. Norwood is one of the most progressive and all inclusive family football clubs in Victoria. We offer participation from Auskick and Junior through to Senior in both male and female teams. The emphasis of developing from within means many players have called Norwood their home for the duration of their football careers. We operate within the Norwood Sporting Club and a brand new state of the art facility located in Ringwood, we boast multiple user groups, who each respectively serve the wider sporting community with multiple sporting disciplines. The “One Club” slogan we are so proud of embraces every corner of the city of Maroondah and captures not just sporting participants, but business partners and multiple support groups. We often state that a sporting club has a far greater role than just developing sportspeople – we see the journey also as one which develops people and life skills in a family friendly environment. Taking a little bit of ownership becomes second nature once you are involved with Norwood. Please take a tour of our site to become familiar with every aspect of our organisation and all that we have to offer. From our remarkable history through to our mission statement, from our unique football department and the sheer volume of sides, to the Wooders and Norsemen groups which repeatedly serve alongside all of our amazing volunteers. We look forward to seeing you at Norwood……….. Mark Etherington – President, Norwood Football Club
