September has seen us all step into the light at Fine Music Sydney. After months of isolation, the sunshine and warmth that spring has delivered have created a change in both the temperature and mood in our studios. We hope that our listeners are feeling this shift too. With these thoughts in mind I invite you to venture outside (while practising safe social distancing measures) for our usual selection of books, records, CDs, DVDs and more at our Book and CD fair, running daily from 9am to 6pm at the Crows Nest Community Centre, 2 Ernst Place, Crows Nest until Monday 5 October. We hope to see you there! We have great news for our Beethoven fans, this month we focus on the launch of our extensive Beethoven 250 Festival which comprises 42 programs over nine weeks from October to December. Look out for five articles featured over the next three months which will cover different aspects of Beethoven’s life and music. Finally, I would like to thank the following dedicated volunteers who were involved in the production of this month’s program. Regards, Rebecca Beare

Louis Vierne Organist Extraordinare Written by Rex Burgess Photo via Collection Musée de Notre-Dame de Paris
Vierne started composing at an early age, with his visual impairment obliging him to use outsized manuscript paper and “a large pencil”, as his colleague Marcel Dupré recounted. Later in life, as his sight continued to diminish, he resorted to composing in Braille. His personal life was both physically and emotionally difficult, with severe spiritual trials that are reflected in his music: Vierne was deeply affected by his separation and subsequent divorce from his wife, as well as the deaths of his brother René and his son Jacques, who were killed in battle in World War I. Beside his great skills as a performer and improviser, Vierne was also an important composer in several genres. He composed an orchestral symphony, vocal and choral music, and a number of substantial but neglected chamber works, including a violin sonata and piano quintet. He did place, however, a particular emphasis on his own instrument. Most notable amongst Vierne’s compositions is a set of six symphonies for organ composed between 1899 and 1930. Monumental in style, they have been described as reflective of the immense and decorated architecture of his beloved Notre-Dame cathedral. Interestingly, in 2003, a German progressive rock group recorded a composition which “rearranges moments of an organ symphony” by Vierne, regarding its pomp and power as a forerunner to rock’n’roll. Jeremy Filsell recounted Vierne’s final moments, a recital at Notre-Dame on 2 June 1937: “He was … given a theme (in Braille) on which to improvise, decided which stops to use but suddenly wavered as a pedal note sounded. Placing his hand over his heart, he fell and died there and then of a stroke.” His wish to die at the console of the Notre-Dame organ was thus fulfilled. A spiritual ending for a man to whom music had been the absolution from life’s trials.

The origins of the French organ tradition can be traced back to a certain Jean Titelouze (c.1563-1633). Priest, scholar, performer and composer, his two collections of organ music from the 1620s set in train a great outpouring from organ composer-performers in France which has continued right up to the present day.
This October, we commemorate 150 years since Vierne’s birth. 18 months on from the fire in the Notre-Dame, and in a year where even ecclesiastical music has been silenced, we too can find solace in Vierne’s music and look forward to the days when church organs and choirs ring out again.
By no means least amongst the cavalcade of names — from the Couperins to Messiaen and beyond — is that of Louis Vierne. Born in 1870, he had congenital cataracts to an extent which nowadays would be called legally blind. Nonetheless, such was his musical ability that he was already tinkering at the piano at the age of two. Vierne attended the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles (The National Institute for Blind Children), where he learnt harmony, piano and violin as well as Braille. In 1890 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, going on to serve as assistant organist to Charles Widor at the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. Then in 1900 he became principal organist at Notre-Dame cathedral, a post he held until his death in 1937.

In Conversation with Justinn Lu Mona Omar speaks to the emerging saxophonist Photos by Emannuel Esguerra
You won our 2019 Fine Music Young Virtuoso (YVA) Award, how did you find the experience? Competing in the Fine Music Young Virtuoso Award has become one of the most memorable experiences of my performing career, especially in times like these where there are limited opportunities to perform to a live audience. When I look for motivation to practice, I remember the thrill of the whole YVA experience, from choosing a competition program that had been my most challenging to date, to what seemed like a trance of focus and excitement performing live on the day in front of the adjudicators, guests and microphones broadcast to a much wider audience than I could imagine. I felt everyone was just so inspired and bursting with energy to show the world what we could offer in our performances. In 2018, you were invited to play at the Melbourne International Saxophone Festival as the youngest and only high school student hosting a recital. How did this opportunity come about? In January 2018, Jay Byrnes hosted his annual Sydney Saxophone Academy in which Joseph Lallo was the guest artist. During this academy, Joseph and Jay discussed and advertised the first saxophone festival to be held in Australia; the Melbourne International Saxophone Festival, a three-day event replicating the structure of the World Saxophone Congress. Looking for opportunities to practice for my LMusA, Andrew Smith, my teacher at the time, encouraged me to apply for a recital spot at the festival. When I was invited to perform, I was unaware of the high caliber artists such as Nick Russoniello, Mary Osborne, Michellina Chan, and members of the Nexas Quartet, also taking part. I was praised and presented a highly anticipated recital, despite being just a high school student amongst a sea of established artists and musicians. This festival was a game changer in my development as a musician, as it was a major contributing factor to my continued study of music after high school, and of course in my choice to study at the Melbourne Conservatorium under Joseph Lallo, who is such a passionate and dedicated musician, performer and teacher.

You completed your AMusA and LMusA with the tutelage of Andrew Smith and Mark Walton, and you currently study under Joseph Lallo at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Who would you love to work with next? Although I would love to continue studying with Joseph Lallo, as he is a musician that I feel looks deeply into the meaning of music and our purpose as performers, Niels Bijl, who recently moved to Melbourne from the Netherlands, may have a teaching style that would help me explore new ideas and philosophies about performance.

I was praised and hosted a highly

established artist and musicians, but had an amazing audience turn-out
including students and alumni from the Sydney Conservatoriums
How would you describe the opportunities that exist for young and emerging musicians in classical and jazz music? I believe that if you can express your unique voice through your music, you will have people who want to listen. When I post artistic ideas on social media these days, I definitely feel a growing audience the more I experiment with this idea of expression and artistry, which is at the core of our art: to express and experience things with people who are interested in listening. I believe although there are not as many opportunities to perform and prove ourselves in competitions yet in Australia, compared to internationally, with the right drive and passion, it is possible, and opportunities will arise where you actively search and prepare. If I can do it as a high school saxophonist in the classical music world, we all can!

The Very Human Humanist Exploring the Man Behind Beethoven’s Music Written by Dan Bickel
Fine Music Sydney is joining music lovers around the world to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with the broadcast of a Beethoven 250 Festival. From 17 October until 17 December (Beethoven’s baptism date; his actual birthdate is unknown) we will be exploring the full range of Beethoven’s oeuvre, relishing well-known favourites and exposing some lesser-known gems. Before turning to the music, however, I thought we should shine a light on Beethoven the man. Born in Bonn, Germany, Ludwig van Beethoven is certainly one of the best known and admired classical composers. His musical gift is recognised across cultures, and the adoption of his Ode to Joy as the official anthem of the Council of Europe attests to his wide impact and appeal. He was a true humanist, who wanted the best for mankind, but his own moods and complex personality were much harder to rein in. After initial musical education in Bonn, Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 to study with Haydn. Upon his arrival, he took part in piano competitions and it was said of him: “He is not a man but a demon. He plays in such a way that will drive us all to the grave.” His demeanour would not have helped; notoriously stubborn and at times quite difficult, he would deliberately arrive late at meals and pay little attention to the way he dressed. Beethoven lived in some 60 different apartments in Vienna and his quarters were said to be less than hygienic. Complaints from neighbours about noise (he had loud arguments with his servants) may explain his frequent moves. At the same time, however, Beethoven could be quite sociable.
Historic Images / Alamy Stock Photo
Beethoven is reported to have said: “Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy, it is the wine of a new procreation, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for men and makes them drunk with the spirit.” It is this intensity that characterises so much of his music. Goethe wrote about something similar, the ‘daimonic’, powerful, often irrational force that drives imaginative and creative people. He noted that Beethoven had this force to a high degree.
He was immensely fond of coffee and the Viennese coffeehouse scene allowed him lively discourse with friends and colleagues, free from the formality of the musical aristocracy upon whom he relied as patrons. Beethoven is usually regarded as a misunderstood genius as well as a loner who was unhappy in his romantic relationships. This is true to a degree, but some of his difficulties may have been the result of his financial struggles and increasing deafness. From 1798 his hearing began to deteriorate and with growing deafness he shied away from social events for fear it might be noticed. Eventually, he gave up on finding a cure, and accepted the situation with stoicism.
So perhaps Beethoven’s irritability and disregard of social graces was a strive to achieve his ideals. And one can’t help but think he wanted all to share his vision. This is evidenced in his music, from the spirit of the Eroica Symphony through to the Ode to Joy, a setting of a verse by Friedrich Schiller which champions the brotherhood of humanity. Most movingly, Fidelio, Beethoven’s single opera, expresses his fierce affirmation of human freedom and dignity.

The Bonn Accord The Music of Bruch and Beethoven Written by Nicky Gluch Image: Femme au Violin, by Henri Matisse
According to Joseph Joachim, “The Germans have four violin concertos. The greatest, the most uncompromising, is Beethoven’s. The one by Brahms vies with it in seriousness. The richest, the most seductive was written by Max Bruch. But the most inward, the heart’s jewel, is Mendelssohn’s.” Leaving aside Joachim’s characterisation of the four concerti, what interests me is his grouping of these four men, for it reminds me of a comment made by Christoph von Dohnanyi. When asked how he selected works for a concert program, Dohnanyi explained that he sought a common mentality, as diverse as the works might be. Thus Bruckner, for him, went with Mozart, not Beethoven, just as I posit Beethoven and Bruch share a common soul. A bon accord that may find its origins in the city of Bonn. Though Beethoven is referred to as a composer of the First Viennese School, he was born and raised in Bonn. Pre-COVID, many had planned to visit the city, and specifically the Münsterplatz, to celebrate 250 years since the composer’s birth. It is in the Münsterplatz that one finds the famous Beethoven Monument; unveiled in 1845 to commemorate what would have been Beethoven’s 75th birthday, it was the realisation of an idea, long in the works, initiated by musicology professor Heinrich Carl Breidenstein. It was with Breidenstein that the young Bruch allegedly had his first music theory lesson. Born in Cologne in 1838, Beethoven’s city lay just 30km away. When the 11-year-old Bruch visited, he would have seen the Monument shining in its newness. Beethoven’s legacy was thus inescapable, be it physically or through Breidenstein’s teachings, and that Bruch felt an affinity for Bonn is evidenced in his decision to return in 1873. He would spend five years there, working privately, before moving to Liverpool and, eventually, Berlin. Berlin was Mendelssohn’s city. He was 18 when Beethoven died, and had already written some of his masterworks, including the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and his String Octet. Almost 100 years later, Bruch would write his own, though his octet was for eight instruments, as opposed to the doublequartet of Mendelssohn’s conception. Mendelssohn, the conductor, was a Beethoven advocate, and in 1844 he conducted the Violin Concerto with Joachim as soloist. The work became key to Joachim’s repertoire, and he to the piece’s acceptance in the canon. When Brahms heard him perform it, he was deeply impressed, and so began a long and fruitful friendship.
Peter Barritt / Alamy Stock Photo
That Brahms revered Beethoven is well known; he was his great musical inspiration and, in many ways, shadow. That the Brahmsian aesthetic is distinguished from that of Wagner and Liszt is similarly recognised, however the divergence occurred not there but with Mendelssohn. In Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, for example, Wagner saw a programmatic theme, whereas Mendelssohn saw a marvellous symphonic structure which had no need for programmatic interpretation. The difference in mentality was whether one looked for drama behind the music, or whether one saw music as inherently transcendental. Those who walked Mendelssohn’s path walked a spiritual and metaphysical line. And so Brahms’ music speaks without words, as does Bruch’s, his recognised disciple. Join Fine Music Sydney this October to commemorate 100 years since Bruch’s death and delve deeper into his heartfeltArtwork oeuvre. by Leita Hutchings Friday 2 October at 2pm

13:00 OPERA IN MINIATURE Prepared by Elaine Siversen Gluck, C. Der Betrogene Kadi. Opera in one act. Libretto by Pierre-René Lemonnier. First performed Vienna, 1786. KADI: Walter Berry, bass bar FATIMA: Anneliese Rothenberger, sop ZELMIRE: Helen Donath, sop NURADIN: Nicolai Gadda, ten OMAR: Klaus Hirte, bar OMEGA: Regina Marheineke, sop Bavarian State Opera Ch & O/Otmar Suitner. EMI 4 64319 2 49 The Kadi (or Qadi), a Muslim judge, desires Zelmire (whom he has never seen) in preference to his wife Fatima. As Zelmire has rejected him, he has ordered her to be married to a poor man so that she would live in poverty. The groom, Nuradin, is in fact not indignant because he has deceived the Kadi about his finances in order to be able to marry Zelmire. She seeks revenge on the Kadi by arranging for him to take Omega, a less-attractive woman, as his new wife. Zelmire arranges for the Kadi to visit and sends Nuradin away. Disguised as Omega, she tells the Kadi that she is consulting him because her father Omar forbids her to marry. The Kadi falls for the story, and for the disguised Zelmire, and summons Omar. Amazed that anyone (much less the Kadi) is interested in his daughter, Omar asks for a substantial dowry. Fatima is angered when the Kadi declares that he has divorced her. The wedding to Omega is about to take place, but the Kadi is enraged when he sees the real Omega rather than the pretended one. Then Zelmire and Nuradin reveal the deception. Omega is disappointed, and the Kadi and Fatima reunite. Cui, C. A feast in time of plague. Dramatic setting in one act of Alexander Pushkin’s play, Little tragedy. First performed, Moscow, 1901. WALSINGHAM: Andrei Baturkin, bar YOUNG MAN: Alexei Martinov, ten MARY: Ludmila Kuznetsova, mezz LOUISA: Tatiana Sharova, sop PRIEST: Dmitri Stepanovich, bass Russian State SO/Valery Polyansky. Chandos CHAN 10201 32 During a feast, a Young Man raises a glass asking all present to toast one of their friends who has recently died from the plague. Instead, Walsingham calls for a moment of silence as a more fitting remembrance. He then requests Mary to sing a sad song before they resume their merriment. Her song touches him deeply but Louisa, in a cynical rant, says that Mary is just playing on his emotions.
Interrupted by the creaking sounds of a deadcart passing by, Louisa faints. When she recovers, she wonders whether she was only dreaming about the cart. The Young Man asks Walsingham to sing something about the plague. Walsingham responds with a hymn but the Priest enters, chastising the merrymakers for disrespecting the dead. He begs them to leave and attempts to shame Walsingham by bringing up the memory of the latter's recently deceased mother and wife. Walsingham sends the Priest away but remains lost in thought. The feasters return with the distant sounds of a funeral procession as the background to their feasting. 14:30 SATURDAY MATINEE Aladdin Davis, C. Ballet: Aladdin (1995-2000). crowns for marrying the condemned man. Her companion, a jester, Jack Point, wishes to marry Elsie but is assured that she will be widowed very quickly. Elsie is blindfolded and led off for the secret ceremony. Meanwhile Phoebe distracts Wilfred and steals his keys which she gives to her father who goes to free Fairfax. Sergeant Meryll disguises Fairfax as his son Leonard. All is ready for the execution. Wilfred, Fairfax (disguised as Leonard) and two Yeomen go to fetch Fairfax. They return and Fairfax announces his own disappearance. Point is distraught at the escape of Elsie's husband, Wilfred is blamed, and all rush off to hunt for Fairfax. Jack Point reveals the secret wedding to Wilfred and convinces him to swear that he shot Fairfax dead as he swam across the river to escape. Wilfred agrees to save his own skin. Fairfax discovers the identity of his secret bride and, disguised as Leonard, attempts to woo her but is rejected. He is about to reveal himself when a shot is heard. Wilfred and Point declare that Wilfred has shot Fairfax so Point asks Elsie to marry him. Fairfax (still disguised as Leonard) instructs Point in the art of wooing but it soon becomes clear that he is wooing Elsie for himself and Elsie is responding. Angry and hurt, Phoebe inadvertently reveals to Wilfred that ‘Leonard’ is in fact Fairfax. In her remorse, she agrees to marry Wilfred if he remains silent. The real Leonard then returns and announces that a reprieve has come for Fairfax. When Elsie arrives for her wedding to ‘Leonard’, she learns that Fairfax lives. Fairfax arrives but the distraught Elsie does not turn to see his face. He keeps up the pretence until Elsie begs for her freedom to go to ‘Leonard’ but he refuses. Finally Elsie turns to see his face and finally recognises him. Everyone is happy except the broken-hearted Jack Point. Suite no 1 from Victoria and Merrie England (1897). Royal PO/Royston Nash. Ali and his female slave, Osmin, are surprised when Rezia enters and the three women tell of the unfortunate travels that brought them to Cairo. Osmin asks the dervish Calandro for his help in allowing Ali and Rezia to escape together. Plans are made for the escape and, when the sultan returns unexpectedly from the hunt, all flee via a secret staircase. The Sultan offers a reward for the recovery of Rezia. Calandro decides to betray them to win the bounty. Ali disguises himself as a French painter to avoid arrest, but to no avail. However, the Sultan pardons Ali and Rezia, gives them his blessing and condemns the treacherous Calandro. CBS M2K 79213 1:35 In a small Flemish village in 1302, Edgar is torn between his infatuation with the passionate gypsy Tigrana and the pure love of his sweetheart, Fidelia. He elopes with Tigrana, but eventually tires of her and joins the army. He falls in battle and his body, fully dressed in armour, is borne back to his village where his great bravery is acclaimed. However, a monk, who claims to have heard Edgar’s final confession, speaks of Edgar’s dissolute life and hints of more heinous crimes. All except Fidelia curse him and fall upon the suit of armour only to find it empty. The monk reveals himself as Edgar who has now overcome his passion for Tigrana. As he embraces Fidelia, Tigrana stabs her. Tigrana is arrested. Edgar falls weeping onto Fidelia’s lifeless body as the villagers kneel in prayer. Con onor muore, from Madama Butterfly (1904). Glossa GCD 920310 1:57 [The most beautiful name]. This serenata was written in praise of the new wife of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, Elisabeth Christine who does not make an appearance in the serenata. Venus, Paris, Juno and Hercules each take turns to make a case for the importance of love, beauty, wisdom and strength, the casting vote being made by Fate. Just as all have rested their cases, Fate announces that another goddess is set to capture their praises, revealing that this is none other than Elisabeth Christine. All declare loyalty to Elisabeth and sing her praises in solo, duet and ensemble arias. After Fate reaffirms the supremacy of the Queen, everyone joins together in a hymn of praise to her. EMI CMS 7 64394 2 1:37 The Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro arrive in Venice from Spain with their daughter Casilda who, as a baby, was married to the son and heir of the King of Barataria. The infant prince was taken by Don Alhambra to Venice and, as the King has died, the hidden prince is now king. Casilda is now the reigning queen of Barataria but she is secretly in love with Luiz, the Duke's drummer. Don Alhambra explains that the prince was raised by the gondolier, Baptisto Palmieri, a drunkard, who eventually forgot which boy was his own son and which boy was the prince. The two boys, Marco and Giuseppe, are now gondoliers. They have just married Tessa and Gianetta respectively. Don Alhambra informs them that one of them is the King of Barataria, but no one knows which. The gondoliers agree to go to Barataria at once, acting as one individual until the actual king is identified. Don Alhambra neglects to mention that the King is married to Casilda. In Barataria Don Alhambra breaks the news that one of the gondoliers had married Casilda when they were babies and therefore is an unintentional bigamist. The Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro arrive with Casilda and Luiz. Don Alhambra finds the nurse who cared for the young prince. She happens to be Luiz's mother. She hid the prince and gave Don Alhambra her own son instead. Thus, the king is neither Marco nor Giuseppe, but Luiz. Casilda finds that she is already married to the man she loves and the two gondoliers surrender their crown to Luiz and, although a little disappointed that neither will be a king, they can return happily to Venice with their wives. Emerging Artist Jaques Emery Bandleader on the Bass Written by Barry O'Sullivan Photo by Sarah Walker
Born in 1997 into a musical family, Jacques Emery is an emerging voice on the double bass as a bandleader and collaborator. “My Mum and Dad are both professional string players. My mother plays violin with The Sydney Symphony Orchestra and my father plays cello with The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestras. My older brother, Douglas, also a classically trained musician, is a Marketing Manager at the SSO.” His early teen jazz memories include hearing his parents’ jazz recordings mainly of Ella and Louis with the most vivid musical memory recall being a Dave Brubeck compilation played continuously in their car. “I was really into listening to all different types of music — jazz, classical, contemporary, as well as electronica. It allowed me to draw on lots of different points of inspiration. Having that as a basis has helped me creatively in many different musical situations” He attended Mosman High School and was involved in many of the school’s musical activities. “There were some really great jazz teachers at that school including the trumpeter Todd Hardy” said Jacques. “I was getting classical lessons as well as jazz lessons throughout all that time”. Jacques commenced learning the double bass around then. In 2016 he auditioned for and was offered a scholarship for his first year at the NSW Conservatorium of Music. While attending, he also received the Dean’s Award for academic excellence, SIMA’s ‘Jazz Stars of Tomorrow,’ and was awarded the BBM Youth Support Award by Judy Bailey. In his final year he received the George Henderson Mobility Scholarship which was a funding grant for an overseas study exercise, with fellow student Charlie Sundborn, for two months collaborating and workshopping with prominent musicians in Oslo, Berlin, and New York. Jacques now belongs to some of Sydney’s most celebrated jazz ensembles including the ARIA-nominated Zela Margossian Quintet and HEKKA with pianist/composer Novak Manojlovic, winner of the 2019 Freedman Jazz Fellowship. I first met up with Novak in 2016 at the Conservatorium when we were both in Mike Nock’s ensemble. He was in his fourth year. I was in my first.

I played with him and the drummer Tully Ryan at a street festival in Surry Hills that Barney McAll had curated for the City of Sydney in shop fronts all along this one street. From that experience, the band HEKKA evolved.” Since 2018, Jacques has been engaged regularly with the Australian Art Orchestra, which has led to appearances at prestigious jazz festivals in Wangaratta, Berlin, London, Poland, and Melbourne. Equally, in demand as a freelance musician, Jacques’ reputation has led to performance opportunities at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in 2019 with Australian jazz luminaries Vince Jones and PBS Young Elder of Jazz Josh Kelly. Jacques considers himself lucky to be a part of an exciting new generation of improvisers in Sydney where a community is forming around experimentation with improvisation and musical form. This year Jacques has been nominated for a Freedman Jazz Fellowship, one of the highest recognitions of talent in the Australian jazz community. Jacques’ ambitions for the next few years are
Jacques’ ambitions for the next few years are to establish his name further as an eclectic solo artist and a bandleader with ongoing releases and performances, as well as furthering his existing musical projects including his new project Soft Attack.

Dread Junction Lively Up Yourself Written by Vince Carnovale Photo by Annie Shillington Design by Lyndon Pike
One of Australia’s foremost, knowledgeable and respected DJ identities in the reggae music business, Prince Vince has hosted “Dread Junction” a fortnightly 2-hour reggae program on Fine Music Sydney since 2010. It’s been described as ‘Australia’s hottest 2-hour reggae show’ with Prince Vince presenting a strictly Roots & Culture selection featuring the best riddims, new & old exclusive rare cuts and tunes originating from Jamaican culture dating right back to the early 60’s as well as the sounds of now! But what is so great about reggae music is that much of what exists in popular music today started in Jamaica. To put things into perspective, it’s worth going back in time before the rise of Bob Marley and the Wailers to trace the origins & roots of reggae. In the 50’s Jamaicans were listening closely to Miami and New Orleans radio. Rock ‘n Roll & R&B was the order of the day. But whilst catchy, nothing at that time was embracing the African heritage, there was little notion then in America of Afrocentricity. At the end of the 50’s different local sound system operators like Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid and Prince Buster rose to prominence and started to cut their own records. The local sound systems in Jamaica were really taking off and this drove the local recording business, with their need to have the latest hot recording. The emergence of the effervescent beat of ska was simultaneously brewing in the early 60’s. At this time the colony of Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962. In Jamaica, this date is celebrated as Independence Day, a national holiday. Rocksteady is a sensational rhythm which slowed down the beat during the mid/late 60’s. Reggae is considered to have hit the town having been formulated around 1967/68. Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica. In 1963, Marley and his friends Peter Tosh & Bunny Wailer formed the Wailing Wailers. The Wailers’ big break came in 1972, when they landed a contract with Island Records. They took the world by storm. The rest is Legend. Prince Vince presents Dread Junction on alternative Wednesday mornings fortnightly on Fine Music Sydney from Midnight – 2am. You will always hear the best in reggae including the old favourites but also featuring latest releases from Jamaica, the UK, Europe, America and from our very own Downunder.

Why Summer Latin Jazz is Cool Part 3 in the Why Jazz is Cool series Written by Leita Hutchings Illustration by Leita Hutchings
Ever thought how close Latin rhythms are to the rhythm of a heartbeat? Take the syncopation the heart-beat; a regular 3-3 beat, where the 3rd beat is silent. Now listen to “Lagrimas Negras” by Aldo Lope Gavillian and Sexteto Cubavana; there’s a literal jumping across a mid-beat, just like a heart-beat. It’s not a matter of art imitating life; it’s a perfect fusion of art and life. The first few guitar bars of Lagrimas Negras SOUNDS like sunlight sparkling! And the tzzzk tzzzk of the Guiro is so close to high summer buzzing of Cicadas. How about the 50s madness when they “discovered” Latin jazz? Imagine! While everyone’s crooning to Frank Sinatra and dancing to Glen Miller, Latin jazz was “discovered”. Then, amongst an explosion of discovery; new fads happening all at once, there was the incredible leap from bobby sox, Aeroplane Jelly and post war conservatism; to the smouldering sensuality of Latinos and their music, along with Beatniks; Rockabilly, and Elvis Presley. The only musical genre to have endured, without interruption, was Latin Jazz. Their unique rhythms; well documented, like the Tressillo and habanera rhythms; introduced all sorts of new rhythms to the musicians vernacular; bossa nova, rhumba, salsa (no, not the food!). I learnt the trick of Latin dancing in Cuba; you mark the beat with your knees, not your feet. That’s why your hips start swinging. So you’re listening to some fabulous Latin jazz; your heartbeat and your breathing are in syncopation with the music; your hips are swinging, and there’s a great culture all around you, of sharing and good will. No wonder they’re always smiling and enjoying life; what a fabulous trick! In the middle of the day, you retire to a beautifully tiled, elegantly cool courtyard and drink “soft” mojitos to beat the heat … in a Hotel that Sinatra stayed in; there’s so many Hotels in Cuba that boast Sinatra stayed there. And while you’re reading or eating or sipping another Mojito, another exquisite Cuban group starts up some soulful or spritely jazz, and the spirit of dancing and sharing is palpable. This summer; with the sun burning your hair, or dancing on the lawn; could there be anything better than Latin jazz, bare feet, tanned limbs, and a season of blistering hot days? I’m already anticipating sitting under a shady tree, a pair of super cool sunnies, wet hair drops evaporating off the skin … maybe a cool mojito in hand. What a great way to handle the coming months.

Volunteer Spotlight Richard Verco Written by Pamela Newling Photo supplied by Richard Verco Illustration by Lyndon Pike
‘Excellent’ and ‘exhilarating’ are words Richard Verco uses frequently when talking about his busy life. Regular presenter, and occasional programmer, Richard has volunteered with Fine Music for about five years and currently broadcasts for three hours a week. He originally applied to the station to deliver magazines, as a way of adding to his regular walking routine. Not long after, he began programming and presenting, with Maureen Meers as his coach. “She was a very good coach—exceptionally good at languages”, he says. Richard spends about two days preparing to broadcast the music selected by others. This involves assessing the character of the music and style, getting the CD notes and researching what the composer has been thinking. Then he writes a small spiel about it and, ‘the thing that drives most presenters nuts’, getting the pronunciation right. He admits that it is easier to present music he likes, but regardless of that, says it must be presented in a positive light. He often presents Musica Sacra and The Classical Era on Sundays and these are among his favourite programs to present. A 30-year Telstra career provided Richard with great opportunities and challenges. Starting as a country engineer, he then designed telephone exchanges, network planning, sales and marketing, ran a few divisions and was part of the senior management team for a decade. No position was for more than two years and, thanks to frequent promotions, ‘it was a very good career’. One of the pleasures of that time was country service. He spent a lot of time in Armidale and Moree—and ‘loved the flat country’. In Armidale Division conversion of manual exchanges to automatic was a huge task in terms of money and designing networks.
Following retirement from Telstra 17 years ago, Richard ran a few consultancies in the dot.com era, one involving a Swiss-financed consortium with Telstra, China Telecom and other smaller players associated with the optical fibre loop from Singapore to Korea. As a regular listener to Swiss Radio Classical, Richard comments that the broadcasts are excellent quality and is surprised how frequently the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra is programmed—more than other Australian Orchestras. He also says that it is amusing to observe how European presenters often struggle with pronunciation of names like Mackerras and Bonynge. ‘Absolutely exhilarating’ is Richard’s description of participating in ChorusOz in 2018 in a performance of Handel’s Saul. The brainchild of Brett Weymark, Music Director of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, ChorusOz gathered 600 singers from around Australia, who paid $300 each for the thrill of singing, to perform in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. Singing with Warringah Musical Choir is on hold during Covid-19. Richard’s other interests include sailing, and regular city and bush walks with friends. A recent purchase of a caravan adds another opportunity for more fun, whenever time and current travel restrictions permit.

CD REVIEWS
Romantic Dreams: Farrenc & Saint-Saëns Ironwood ABC 481 9887
Forgotten Fields Mark Isaacs Gracemusic/MGM
Debussy/Rameau Víkingur Ólafsson DG 483 7701
Louise Farrenc was a highly talented pianist who became Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatoire: she was also a composer who wrote finely crafted chamber music and symphonies. Farrenc’s Quintet for piano and strings No 1 was composed at a time when Romanticism was beginning to establish itself; it has been compared to Mendelssohn and described as “Mozart on steroids”. A male critic once said of her music that it displayed, “all the graces of her sex in her melodies, and all the vigour of ours in her knowledge of counterpoint”. What this CD illustrates is that, regardless of gender, both Farrenc and Saint-Saëns, whose
own piano quintet is also performed, are capable of weaving both grace and vigour through their music. The comprehensive liner notes discuss the historically informed performance practices that have guided Ironwood’s interpretations.
Mark Isaacs is an Australian master composer and improviser. On this latest recording, he displays sublime subtlety, while always keeping one eye trained on the avant-garde, with a compilation of bucolic piano solo miniatures. The piano solo is quite often the window into the artist’s soul and left to his own devices and desires, this pianistcomposer produces music that’s as much about respecting a moment as it is about developing it. Captured on a Steinway Model D Concert Grand piano, these gorgeous cameos provide comfort and inspiration to listeners with a depth
and beauty to spare. From the familiar passion encountered in his composition Remembrance to the delicate quietude of Forgotten Fields, Isaacs branches out in myriad directions, utilising rubato romanticism and lush chords to deliver a sonic palette that represents a delightful culmination of his many varied musical explorations.
Debussy paid homage to Rameau in one of the first set of his Images. He praised the “perfect taste and strict elegance which make up the consummate beauty” of Rameau’s music, and wrote that, despite the separation of two centuries, “Rameau seems to be our contemporary”. The pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, having become familiar only recently with Rameau, here intermingles pieces by both composers in a fascinating program that allows us to appreciate the similarities and synchronicities. We become aware of Baroque models such as toccatas and
sarabandes underpinning “Jardins sous la pluie” and other ‘hazy impressions’ by Debussy. We are surprised by the advanced harmonies in the operatic interlude “The Arts and the Hours”, written by Rameau when he was eighty and here arranged for piano by Ólafsson. This is an intelligently arranged recital and a very rewarding listening experience.
