GOVERNORS IN INDIA MUST BE DISCREET AND CAREFUL

The author is Former Minister of External Affairs of India

Those who hold important positions carry a heavy burden on their shoulders. They are individuals who are generally called VIPs- Very Important Persons.

Governors in India do not, as far as I gather, take the oath of secrecy. Yet, they are required to be exceptionally discreet and careful. That a Governor who does not have amicable relations with the Chief Minister invites avoidable discord. Tact is a virtue that the entire ruling establishment must practice.

Recently, a former Governor gave an interview to Karan Thapar, the outstanding interviewer in the country. He was interviewing Shri Satya Pal Malik, who has had the unique distinction of holding the Governorship of four states. His services to the powerful Jat Community are only too well known. Karan Thapar’s job is to be as aggressive as possible and that he does with professional dexterity.

Karan Thapar, as always had done his homework. The more he provoked the former and experienced ex-Governor, Shri Satya Pal Malik perhaps did not see through what Karan Thapar was getting at. He was provoking Shri Malik on Pulwama. He, in my judgement should have been much more cautious in his responses on Kashmir, which I believe is still on the agenda of the UN Security Council. Shri Malik, whom I know well could have been more cautious. Kashmir is too delicate an issue at the best of times.

Since Shri Malik is not an unknown person, his words and observations carry some weight. If I am not mistaken Pakistan welcomed some of the former governor’s off the cuff answers. Some of these might have reached anti India elements at the UN.

To my utter surprise Shri Malik had a dig at the Prime Minister too. The Prime Minister made him governor, not of one or two but of four states. The Modi government has done well to ignore the ex-governor’s not so gentle recklessness.

How does a Governor deal with an uncooperative and over verbal Chief Minister. With tact, wisdom, patience and good cheer. Shri Dhankhar displayed all these qualities while Governor of West Bengal.

The ten teams have back breaking schedules. Even at my age (94 next month), I watch matches till midnight. Cricket is both a great sport, superb entertainer and talent attracter. The great Brain Lara travels all the way from the West Indies to become a coach

IS SHARAD PAWAR PLAYING DOUBLE GAME YET AGAIN?

Sharad Pawar is an expert player of politics, but if ever he starts scoring goals in his own post, then understand that he has changed his allegiance. His eagerness to change faces has been clearly visible from his politics till now. So, when he has a closed-door meeting with Gautam Adani for about two hours, he assumes the posture of rejecting the JPC’s demand on the Adani episode. If sources are to be believed, he has had long conversations with the BJP top brass too. There are murmurs in the political circles that Pawar has a secret agreement with the BJP that Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule can become a minister at the center and his Nephew Ajit Pawar may be the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra in place of Shinde. But Ajit Pawar

started appearing in a different color. He removed the symbol of NCP from his Twitter handle and speculations started that now the time has come for him to bloom.

In fact, 16 MLAs of Eknath Shinde faction are still facing the threat of disqualification. This case is still pending in the court, so if these 16 MLAs of Shinde faction are disqualified by the court, then the Shinde government will come in minority, so BJP has placed a bet on Ajit Pawar under its backup plan. But it is famous about Sharad Pawar that he has expertise in playing two and a half moves on political chess. So he has tied his strings with the Congress as well. He wanted to come to Delhi and meet Rahul at 10 Janpath but Rahul asked him, “Why not have this meeting at Kharge’s residence.”

T he coming days may be difficult for Nitish Kumar who is working tirelessly day and night in the initiative of opposition unity. Ever since he broke the alliance with BJP and formed government with Lalu’s party, the Center is constantly eyeing Nitish. ED and CBI are continuously questioning RJD President and State Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav and the sword of arrest is also hanging on them. So, CBI is continuously increasing its resources for the complete siege of Nitish and Tejashwi. If reliable sources are to be believed, in recent days, CBI has taken more than 100 houses on lease in Patna, that means more and more CBI people are in Patna, and this aspect is also like an alarm bell for Nitish!

RAJNATH WILL NOT LEAVE LUCKNOW

R ecently, Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met Prime Minister Modi and shared his mind. Earlier, there were indications that Rajnath would not contest the 2024 elections as he would be 73 by next year, but it is said that Rajnath has expressed his wish to the PM that ‘he wants to contest the Lok Sabha election of 2024 from Lucknow seat only, i.e. the same seat and this will be his last election. In fact, Rajnath’s younger son Neeraj Singh, who oversees the entire work of the Lucknow parliamentary constituency, is keen to enter active politics. Neeraj is associated with BJP since 2000. Rajnath’s elder son Pankaj Singh, who is BJP’s MLA from Noida as well as the party’s state vice-president, has actually set his sights on the Lucknow parliamentary seat. So the biggest challenge before Rajnath is how he can manage both his son and provide a a new sky to their political ambitions.

MP GOVT RECOMMENDS CBI INQUIRY

I n what couldbe termed as a major development in the Sanjivani Credit Society episode, the Madhya Pradesh government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the matter. There are some victims from MP who had lodged an FIR against the society, whereas in Rajasthan, union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat was also seeking the same and filed a petition in Jodhpur High Court regarding the same. Now the road has become easier with the decision of Madhya Pradesh government and sooner or later the investigation will go out of the hands of Rajasthan SOG and go to CBI, and this could have far-reaching political consequences.

...AND FINALLY

T he alliance between the Congress and the Left parties got a new face in the Tripura elections, gas the results of the alliance were also encouraging. So, the same pattern was repeated in Manipur also. Now intense brainstorming is going on in the Congress as to why not in the 2024 general elections, following the same pattern i.e. by forging an alliance with the Left parties, the Congress should together present a challenge to Mamata and the BJP in West Bengal.

UP CM YOGI ON SEVENTH HEAVEN

The popularity of Yogi Adityanath , who took the initiative to end the mafi a rule from Uttar Pradesh, is on the seventh heaven these days, especially since the dreaded criminal of the state Atiq Ahmed has been eliminated.

If sources are to be believed, in recent days, Yogi has received an important message from the BJP top leadership that ‘he is going to play an important role in the 2024 general elections.’ He will also have a big responsibility to bear the expenses of the party.

In fact, in the ‘Global Investor Summit’ organized by Yogi in Lucknow recently, an investment of Rs 32.92 lakh crore has been promised and a record number of 18,643 MoUs were signed. Earlier, in the ‘Global Investor Summit’, Gujarat used to be at the number one position. When Narendra Modi was the CM of Gujarat, there was an investment of about 15 lakh crore rupees, which was a record. Now Yogi has planned to set up a new industrial city on the lines of Noida at Shandila near Hardoi, which is only two and a half hours away from Lucknow airport.

WHERE IS GUDDU MUSLIM?

I n the famous Umesh Pal murder case, in a CCTV footage, notorious Atiq’s follower Guddu Muslim is seen throwing a bomb. While most of the accused have been killed by the UP STF, but the whereabouts of Guddu Muslim are still not known. But there is also a myth associated with Guddu that ‘whoever he is with, gets killed’. It is said that he has an old habit that he either kills the said person himself or gets him killed by being an informer. When he was with Satyendra Singh Langad, he got him killed him with the help of Santosh Singh. Then Santosh Singh was killed by Bahubali Dhananjay Singh on Guddu’s information. It is said that then this person started making bombs for Mukhtar Ansari, but when Mukhtar went to jail, he joined Atiq Ahmed. Sources also claim that UP Police and STF killed Atiq’s son Asad and his accomplice Ghulam in an encounter in Jhansi on the basis of information received from Guddu Muslim. Atiq’s brother Ashraf wanted to tell the media persons before his death - ‘Main baat hai ki Guddu Muslim...’, however, he was killed before he could finish his sentence. It is being said about Guddu Muslim, who has a prize of 5 lakhs, that these days he has become the biggest informer of UP STF.

Additional posts for teachers will also be created with the schools.
