Embattled billionaire Gautam Adani on Thursday spoke publicly for the first time since his ports-to-energy conglomerate publicly battled a short seller’s accusation of stock manipulation and accounting fraud, saying the abrupt move to withdraw a fully-subscribed share sale at his flagship firm was due to market volatility. Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) closed at ` 1,564.70 on the BSE on Thursday, less than half the price at which shares were offered to investors in the follow-on public offer (FPO) that closed on January 31.

‘After a fully subscribed follow-on public offering (of Adani Enterprises Ltd), Wednesday’s decision of its withdrawal would have surprised many,” he said.

Word is that owing to the constant jibes of the opposition regarding cabinet expansion and which Shinde and independent MLAs would be a part of it, Shinde had called the meet to find out what was going on in the minds of his faction leaders and also to ensure that discipline is maintained in case some legislators are not included in expansion.

Moreover, it is believed that discussion also occurred among the law makers over party symbol - Bow and Arrow - as the hearing is nearing its end and decision would be proclaimed soon by the EC. Further more, the election of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corpo ration (BMC) were also discussed along with the strategy of the Shinde faction.

Env Min defers proposal to dredge ocean floor, port likely to be delayed

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority had sought an amendment in the project’s Terms of Reference (ToR)

First India Bureau

Mumbai: In a major development that could delay the implementation of the proposed Vadhavan Port in Palghar, the Union environment ministry has deferred a proposal by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) seeking an amendment in Terms of Reference (ToR) for the project.

This development comes to light just a few days prior to a hearing of the Dahanu Taluka Environment Protection Authority (DTEPA) on February 13, when the quasi-judicial body is expected to deliver a ruling on the permissibility of the port.

In a meeting of the MoEFCC’s Expert Appraisal Committee

Mumbai: A sessions court that last Monday granted protection from arrest to former city mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori

Pednekar in a case concerning fraudulently acquiring Slum Redevelopment Authority (SRA) flats, has said in its detailed order that there is no reason for the police to take her into custody.

The court noted that the flats are already in SRA’s custody and the rest of the probe can be conducted by documents and recording statements of witnesses. It said that prima facie it appears that the stakeholders concerned

have given flats to Pednekar on leave and license. It also noted that as per Pednekar’s claim, the building had completed 10 years in 2017 and hence there was no question of violation of SRA rules. As per the SRA rules, flat owners are not supposed to rent out the properties for at least 10 years from the date of allotment.

First India Bureau

Ballia: SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar on Wednesday said he will contest the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections in alliance with the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). He said he met Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai two days ago.

“The meeting, which lasted for about oneand-a-half hours, was positive. Discussions were held with Thackeray regarding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections to be held in

Maharashtra,” Rajbhar said.

He claimed that Thackeray agreed to contest the polls in alliance with the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP). The Brihanmumbai Municipal

Corporation has 227 seats. It is currently under an administrator as the five-year term of its elected representatives ended early last year and fresh polls are due.

would forge an alliance with the Shiv Sena for elections in Uttar Pradesh, Rajbhar said the Shiv Sena has no party base in the northern state. On the controversy regarding Ramcharitmanas, the SBSP president exuded confidence that the Samajwadi Party (SP) will not gain anything from the row.

“The Samajwadi Party will not get anything through Swami Prasad Maurya. Maurya is not a mass leader. Had he been so, he would not have tasted defeat in the assembly elections,” he claimed.

Bullet Train project stalled due to ex-CM: Railway Min

First India Bureau

However, this project was stalled during the tenure of then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Railway Minister in a press conference adding that “Permissions required for various bullet train operations in the state were not grant-

In this budget, a capital provision of Rs2.41 lakh crore was made for Indian Railways. It will focus on high-speed trains, bullet trains and new tracks. Therefore, the work of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is likely to speed up. After the presentation of the Union Budget, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw blamed the delay in the bullet train on Maha Vikas Aghadi government-era Chief Minis-

1 new Vande Bharat train to reach today, other on Feb 06

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to launch the Mumbai-Solapur and Mumbai-Shirdi trains on Feb 10

First India Bureau

Mumbai: One of the two Vande Bharat Express trains which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to launch from Mumbai on February 10 will likely reach the city on Friday morning, officials said; the other is likely to arrive on

February 06.

The new Vande Bharat Express trains will service the Mumbai-Solapur and Mumbai-Shirdi routes.

Both trains, manufactured at the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory, will be fitted with parking brakes, following which they will undergo trials in the hilly ghat section on the outskirts of Mumbai to check whether they need deployment of additional locomotives to cross

this terrain.

Having a gradient of 1:37--meaning there is a rise of 1m for every 37m run--both Bhor and

Thal ghats are among the toughest Railway ghat sections in the county, officials said. Hence, at present all

trains passing through these ghats are hauled up by additional locomotives (called bankers) from the Mumbai side. In ghat sections bankers are used for pushing trains besides avoiding incidents of train roll back in case of parting of coaches. But the process of attaching and detaching bankers takes at least a few minutes, increasing travel time due to technical halts, an official explained.

Now, Aadhar mandatory to buy ‘deadly’ farm tool

Several incidents of so-called ‘Koyta gangs’ bullying people by brandishing billhooks have been reported in recent times

First India Bureau

Pune: In the wake of a spurt in incidents of miscreants, including minors, attacking and terrorizing people with koytas, or billhooks, city police have asked sellers to take down Aadhaar card details of those buying these farm tools, an official said on Thursday.

The decision to track buyers comes after several incidents were reported in recent days, which involved members of the so-called ‘Koyta gangs’ bullying people by brandishing billhooks, especially in areas located on the outskirts of Pune city.

“We have asked the zonal DCPs to instruct the retail sellers of agriculture tools in their regions to ensure they record the credentials of the buyers of koytas at the time of purchase,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amol Zende. The sellers of farm equipment have been instructed to ensure that juveniles do not purchase koytas, he said. “They should also ensure that the tools are being sold for agriculture and other valid purposes only,” Zende added.

1,000-year-old Jain stone statue discovered in Hingoli

First India Bureau

Aurangabad: An ancient stone idol, believed to be about 1,000 years old, of Lord Kunthunath, one of the Jain Tirthankaras, has been found in Hingoli district, experts said on Thursday.

The statue was discovered during construction work on the premises of an existing Jain temple located at Sonune Galli of Aundha Nagnath, about 600km from Mumbai, on Tuesday, they said.

Indologist Saili Palande-Datar said, “The sculpture recently excavated near the Jain temple at Aundha Nagnath is carved out of a basalt stone, could be from the 12th-13th century. It is of refined make and can be identified as that of Kunthunath Bhagwan.” According to Jain-

ism, Kunthunath was the 17th of the 24 Tirthankaras, each of whom has a specific representative symbol or “lakshana”. This statue can be identified through its goat symbol, she said. Lord Ma-

havira was the 24th Tirthankara.

The antiquity of the sculpture matching with other remains at the spot substantiated the presence of an important Jain centre at Aundha Nagnath.

The BMC administration has claimed that they cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) which can file a charge sheet in the court but only after permission from the civic body. Till date, the ACB has 142 cases registered. Of these, the BMC has permitted to prosecute 105 cases. Out of the remaining 37 cases, 30 cases are under investigation.

Charge sheet filed against five arrested PFI members

Mumbai (PTI): The Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) filed its chargesheet against five members of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI), arrested after raids last year. The accused were arrested on the grounds of indulging in anti-national activities and waging war against the nation.

In the chargesheet filed before special judge AM Patil, the accused have been charged under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Indian Penal Code for various offences, including promoting enmity among different groups and conspiring to commit offences against the State.

More than a 100 branches of the radical Islamist group were raided and several arrests were made in a nationwide operation, in September last year.

The PFI was banned by the Central government through a notification issued on September 27 last year, in which it said the outfit (PFI) and its affiliates have been involved in subversive activities, thereby disturbing public order and undermining the constitutional set-up of the country.

First India Bureau

Thane: A local court here has acquitted five persons being tried under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) in an alleged robbery and assault case, on the grounds that the prosecution failed to examine any independent

The prosecution told the court that the incident had occurred on the night of February 03, 2010, when the victim--a driver--was returning from Dahisar by road. The prosecution, except the evidence through police officials, failed to produce any independent evidence.”

The evidence brought on record cannot be easily brushed aside. However, considering the serious offence and the prescribed punishment coupled with the ratio laid down in the case of Sanjay Dutt, some corroboration is required, the court said.

On the other hand, BRICS and countries in the Global South are committed to international law enshrined in the UN - promoting economic and social development as well as advancing international peace and security through international treaties and conventions. Clearly the BRICS and G-7 represent two distinctive global governance propositions and differ on their vision of economic development and globalisation.

The G-7’s launch of the Build Back Better World (B3W) initiative as an alternative to China’s Belts and Road Initiative (BRI) reeks of power politics instead of a genuine desire to help the Global South. The failure to get Russia isolated on Ukraine war in the back-toback meetings of BRICS and G-7 in 2022 have been big setbacks for the US. The G-7 continues to pursue unilateralism and global hegemony and the BRICS is emerging as a real challenge to the West. However, the BRICS potential to challenge the US led global order is undermined by the internal makeup of the group, lack ideological homogeneity and capacity to develop a collective foreign policy. Presence of Indian PM Narendra Modi and South African President Cyr-

THE FORMER (INCLUDING THE EU) HAS A POPULATION OF 987 MILLION WITH A GDP OF US$34 TRILLION WHILE THE LATTER HAS A POPULATION OF 3 BILLION WITH A GDP OF US$23.5 TRILLION

il Ramaphosa, two prominent BRICS leaders as guests of German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz at the G-7 Summit is an indicator of BRICS prominence in global affairs. Despite the lack of internal cohesion, the BRICS still represents both a developmental and geopolitical challenge to the US led G-7 as China has been able present a non-capitalist market-oriented development alternative to the West and India’s voice is being heard globally more than ever before. The G -7 knows that global green transition and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets cannot be achieved without India. For its ambitions, India needs G-7 investment, technology, and green finance. The last G-7 summit took place under the shadows of the Ukraine war, which has threatened economic recovery and the many issues in Indo-Pacific Region still remains unresolved and the leaders reiterated the “importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific”, and reminded China to “abstain from

threats, coercion, intimidation measures or use of force”. Narendra Modi, along with the leaders of Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal, and South Africa, also attended some of the sessions.

India now has very strong economic and strategic ties G-7 and EU and the Indian economy is likely to be one of the fastest growing economies in the post-pandemic phase, partnership with India is attractive for the West. Modi rightly focused on strengths of the Indian economy, its ambitious climate targets and performance, and contribution to global food security. The G-7 relations with Russia are bad, and tensions with China have grown. In these circumstances, strengthening partnership with New Delhi is useful for the G-7. Indeed, the BRICS is fast emerging as a direct competitor to the G-7 and the possible entry of Argentina and Iran may turn BRICS into a geopolitical, entity. While G-7 will continue to fight for unity and relevance, Russia, China, and their supporters will invest in various economic, political and even military infrastructures, in the hope of creating a permanent and sustainable counterbalance to Western dominance. India is fast emerging as most important voice on the global fora expected to be helping bridging gaps between the west dominated G-7 and EU and South Global Economies represented through G-20, SCO and the BRICS.

Being a journalist is no crime, said Siddique Kappan after his release from Lucknow jail after over two years of incarceration. The journalist from Kerala was arrested by the Special Task Force of UP Police while on his way to Hathras to cover the rape and murder of a Dalit girl. He was first booked under the UAPA and then the Enforcement Directorate joined the investigations alleging wider conspiracy. The UP STF alleged Kappan to be the “mastermind” of the Popular Front of India, a Muslim outfit which was outlawed by the Union Home Ministry in 2022. The STF also claimed that Kappan’s motive was to create unrest. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court which did not find sufficient evidence against him. The ED had accused him of fraudulent transactions of over Rs 1 crore but could not prove it in the Allahabad High Court. Kappan was thus arrested for not committing any crime, prompting the courts to grant him bail.

Govt agencies not looking at terror acts through prism of religion: DGP

Jammu (PTI): Law enforcement agencies do not look at terror acts through the prism of religion, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh said on Thursday, asserting that strict action will be taken against those found involved in such acts. He said the recent terror attacks in Jammu region at the behest of handlers from across the border were aimed at reviving terrorism and harming the communal harmony and brotherhood in the Union territory.

“We work in accordance with law of the land and do not see (any terror-related incident) through the prism of religion. An accused is dealt with on the basis of the crime and not religion,” Singh told reporters here.

“Jammu province witnessed a series of terror attacks (in the past one year),” he said.

Jammu (PTI): Referring to the recent arrest of a government teacher-turnedaterrorist who was working at the behest of his handlers, DGP said a terrorist cannot hide himself for ever and has to face the law. Asked whether there is a possibility of more terrorists in government departments, the officer said anyone found involved in such acts will be dealt with as per the law. “A new dimension was given to terrorism in J-K under which terror modules are created and assigned particular tasks,” DGP said. TO GENERATE ILLEGAL FUNDS

‘Delhi Excise Policy was made by top AAP leaders’

New Delhi (ANI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in its chargesheet stated that the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) investigation done so far has revealed that, the Delhi Excise Policy, 2021-22 was created by the top leaders of the AAP to continuously generate and channel illegal funds for themselves.

ED further states that the extent of involvement and abatement of the criminal activities by the leaders of the AAP covered in the subject, Prosecution Complaint further substantiates their design and scheme of the scam.

The policy promoted cartel formations through back door awarding an exorbitant wholesale profit margin of 12 per cent and a huge retail profit margin of 185 per cent and incentivized other illegal activities on account of criminal conspiracy by the top leaders of AAP to extract kick-

Ebacks from the businesses, stated the ED.

ED revealed that it is disclosed by C Arvind, DANICS, Secretary to Manish Sisodia, in his statement dated December 7, 2022, the draft GoM report was given to him in the mid of March 2021 when C Arvind was called by Manish Sisodia to the residence of Arvind Kejriwal, CM (where Satyender Jain was also pre-

sent). The conspiracy of the GoM to give wholesale business to private entities and fix a 12 per cent margin (to get a 6 per cent kickback out from the same) is clear from the statement of C. Arvind wherein he disclosed that there was neither any discussion in the GoM meetings about giving wholesale to private entities nor fixing 12 per cent profit margin for them.

DABUR THIRD QTR PROFIT FALLS 5.5% TO `476.55 CRORE

New Delhi (PTI): Eminent economist Arvind Panagariya has said India is on the cusp of returning to a high growth trajectory and voiced confidence that the country will become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027-28.

Currently, India is the fifth largest economy “so it’s another five years. We are already in (the year) 2023. So 2027-28, India should be the third-largest economy,” Panagariya, Columbia University Professor and former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, said.

GDP growth at 6.5% in 2023-24. The International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook update Tuesday said growth in India is set to “decline from 6.8% in 2022 to 6.1% in 2023 before picking up to 6.8% in 2024, with resilient do-

CARS TO MEET EMISSION NORMS

New Delhi (PTI): Measures announced in the Budget such as extending the period of incorporation of eligible budding entrepreneurs for providing tax incentives, would provide a lot of support to further strengthen the country’s startup ecosystem, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said.

The government on Wednesday proposed to extend the period of incorporation of eligible startups by one more year till March 31, 2024, for providing tax incentives to encourage budding entrepreneurs.

Goyal said that the government has consistently been supporting the start-

up ecosystem and since the launch of the startup India initiative, the country has had significant growth in the startup arena.

“So my sense is that this (Budget) will certainly give a lot of support and help to the startup ecosystem so that it flourishes in

world. Panagariya said his reading of the Economic Survey is that the “narrative that comes across tells the story of a much stronger economy” than the one that is growing at 6.5%.

“My sense is that given where India stands cur-

Had there been a BJP candidate, we would have won: Bawankule

Maha BJP chief displays short memory after party-backed Ganar loses in Nagpur

First India Bureau

Mumbai: In an embarrassment for the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sudhakar Adbale— backed by the Maha Vikas Aghadi—claimed the Nagpur Teachers’ constituency seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council with a 55% majority.

Understandably, BJP state unit president

Chandrashekhar Bawankule—who, along with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, is from Nagpur—is far from pleased. However, he was quick to point out that Nagorao Ganar’s

loss is not a reflection of the BJP.

In fact, Bawankule highlighted the fact that while Ganar may have had the party’s support, he was not an

“It cannot be said that the loss of that seat is a failure of the BJP. Had there been a BJP candidate in Nagpur, we would have won. So, I

don’t think there is any need to get upset over this. We have won in Konkan. We got over 14,000 votes in comparison to the 1,000-1,500 votes received the last

time,” Bawankule said, seemingly quick to forget that he, Gadkari and Fadnavis were all public in their support for Ganar. In fact, the BJP had even set up booths on polling day to show its support for Ganar.

Notably, Adbale got 14,071 votes in the first round of counting, while Ganar received less than half of that, with 6,309.

Bawankule was not the only BJP leader to comment on the shock to the party.

“The Nagpur seat was held by Congressbacked candidates for 18 years before 2010. After I became the state president of the BJP,

that place came under our control. The BJP held that seat for the last 12 years. Generally, we work on the principle of not celebrating after victories. So we will definitely analyse this defeat as well. Wherever there is a gap, we will try to fill it,”

BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar told reporters in Mumbai.

Mungantiwar also commented on the issue of the BJP getting hit over the issue of pension for teachers.

“The old pension scheme was a problem during the Congress era. It is unfortunate that we are being blamed for it,” he said.

First India Bureau Mumbai: Reacting to the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party-supported candidate Nagorao Ganar in the Nagpur Teachers’ constituency, MP Vinayak Raut of the Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray has claimed that Ganar’s defeat is a defeat for Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

Notably, Maha Vikas Aghadi candidate Sudhakar Adbale beat Ganar in the election to the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

“Nagpur assembly election is considered very important.

Mumbai: The Aam Aadmi Party has announced that will contest the by-elections to the Chinchwad and Kasba Peth Assembly constituencies, potentially marking the party’s entry into Maharashtra.

Those familiar with the issue say there are four aspirants interested in the Kasba by-election, and six for the Chinchwad seat. The party will decide on its nominees soon, party insiders said.

Addressing the media in Pimpri-Chinchwad, AAP’s regional vicepresident Haribhau Rathod said, “The party’s local workers and the central leadership have discussed it and de-

cided to participate in the Chinchwad and Kasba Peth Assembly bypolls. We will announce our candidates in the next two days,”

He added that the party is confident of its chances.

“We don’t do emotional politics. We do not accept the politics of sympathy. In a democracy, no constituency is dominated by anyone. Our leaders and our party have reached every household, so we are contesting this first election in Maharashtra for the voice of the common people,” Pune district president Mukund Kirdat who, along with city working president Chetan Bendre and city president Anup Sharma were also present, said.

First India Bureau Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party has marked a victory in the Konkan region with its candidate Dnyaneshwar Mhatre winning one of the five seats up for grabs in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. This has led analysts to begin discussions on the changing equations in the state.

to insist that he joins the BJP.”

Notably, the Congress also suspended Satyajeet’s father and three-time MLC Sudhir Tambe for failing to file his nomination papers, despite having

been named as the party’s candidate for the Nashik division graduates’ seat.

However, Jayant Patil, the Maharashtra state unit chief of the Nationalist Congress Party, has rubbish such claims.

When asked if Tambe’s victory in Nashik would be a win for the BJP, Patil replied, “Even if Satyajeet Tambe wins in Nashik, it will not be a win for the BJP. Satyajeet is an Independent candidate.”

This is a constituency with a political presence of leaders like Fadnavis and Bawankule. Therefore, this defeat belongs to Fadnavis and Bawankule,” said Raut.

Speaking further, Raut said, “All the voters in Nagpur have shown that they love the Maha Vikas Aghadi more than the current government. In fact, the Maha Vikas Aghadi has won the Nagpur seat held by BJP for 12 years.”

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar gave us blessings in Guwahati: Shinde

Guruji said very good, keep doing the good work and you will succeed, CM remembers meeting from last year

First India Bureau

Jalna: Chief Minister

Eknath Shinde said on Thursday that spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar had given him blessings and told him that he would succeed when he and other rebel Shiv Sena MLAs were camping in a Guwahati hotel. The CM was

speaking at a farmers’ gathering organized by Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living Foundation at Watur village in central Jalna district. The spiritual leader was also present on the dais. In his speech, Shinde said that Sri Sri Ravi Shankar supports good work.

“Let me tell you something...when we

were in Guwahati...,” he said. The mention of Guwahati evoked laughter from the audi-

ence, forcing the CM to pause. “...then Gurudev-ji had given me blessings over the

phone. We told him that we have launched a battle. He said very good, keep doing good work, you will succeed....Gurudev-ji supports those who are doing good work,” the CM said.

Shinde and a majority of Shiv Sena MLAs rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership in June 2022. The rebel MLAs stayed in a hotel in Guwahati, more than 2,000 km away from Mumbai, for a week, triggering the

fall of the Thackerayled Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Shinde formed the next government in the state in alliance with the BJP.

The chief minister also said that his government will actively support the Jaltara water conservation project of the Art of Living Foundation. He also claimed that the Marathwada water grid and other irrigation projects in central Maharashtra undertaken by

the earlier BJP-Shiv Sena government were stopped by the MVA regime. “But now we have restarted these projects,” Shinde said.

After coming to power, his government allowed the resumption of all religious festivals which had been banned (on account of the coronavirus pandemic), the chief minister said. Festivals are necessary as they provide solace and mental peace, he added.
