UNTIL 17 MAY THE OLD LABORATORY AT RHS WISLEY

This beautiful Arts and Crafts style, Grade II-listed building is the symbolic core of the Wisley landscape. As the home of RHS Science for over a century, the Old Laboratory was instrumental in Wisley’s mission to conduct practical scientific research into ornamental horticulture, and to provide training for student gardeners. That role has been taken over by RHS Hilltop: The Home of Gardening Science. So the Old Laboratory has been renovated and from 20th March will welcome visitors to share its stories.

NATIONAL TRUST GEMS

Oakhurst Cottage and The Homewood two unique gems of the National Trust open to the public.

Two unique houses in Surrey, Oakhurst Cottage, and The Homewood, will be opening their doors to visitors this spring. Only open from April – October for guided tours, this is a rare opportunity to see examples of 18th century rustic charm and 20th century modern design which are cared for by the National Trust.

Nestled in the village of Hambledon near Godalming, Oakhurst cottage has remained practically unchanged for over 100 years and provides a glimpse into a rural way of life that you might only read about in books or see in paintings. As you walk through the doors to the front living room with its large fireplace, visitors can get a sense of a bygone era with the hearth being the centre of cottage homelife. Humble furnishings and homewares, further reflect what life was like for inhabitants of the time. Outside, the garden has been planted with vegetables which would provide food for the kitchen table with floral borders.

Due to the fragile condition of the cottage, it is open for guided tours only on Thursday and Saturday from 13 April to 28 October.

By contrast, The Homewood, offers visitors a chance to witness an extraordinary early 20th

century country villa which is a masterpiece of modernist design and icon of contemporary architecture. Built in 1938 by architect, Patrick Gwynne, as his family home, the house is elevated on stilts with white walls and expansive glazing. The exceptional living spaces remain unchanged from Gwynne’s original design and includes his furniture collection which again comprises unique design classics. Visitors can also explore the 6-acre garden designed by Gwynne which includes a number of special gardens within the main structure each with their own unique colour and seasonal interest.

Under the terms of its bequest to the National Trust, the Homewood remains a private home. However, it is open to visitors for guided tours from 1 April to 29 October on the first Saturday of each month and subsequent Fridays.

ALWAYS ON GUARD WESTMINSTER SECURITY

Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners.

So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat.

Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to keep clients safe from danger.

Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close protection operatives do not spend each day toeto-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning

bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, or nannies”

are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any physical altercation at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families with their stealth ability and emotional intelligence. With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites.

Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond.

PATRICK WALLS: FIGURATIVE AND ABSTRACT

Exhibition: 29 April - 10 June 2023 | Open: Tuesday - Saturday 10.30am-5pm, free entry

PATRICK WALLS SAYS:

”I am very fortunate in my practice to have the opportunity to make site specific public art and to also have the artistic freedom to explore ideas within my own personal work.

We are delighted to welcome Patrick Walls for a gallery exhibition at the New Ashgate, Farnham.

Patrick specialises in carved stone and cast metals. He works on large scale sculpture for the public domain and makes smaller, individual sculptures to exhibit.

Patrick’s work can be either figurative or abstract but often explores two dominant themes; “air/ water” and “volume/time”.

Air / Water explores wave forms and repeated patterns, both in terms of form and surface. These sculptures can be small intimate pieces or monumental landmark sculptures. Employing fluid sweeping curves the sculptures seek to evoke a sense of movement belying the solidity and weight of the material.

Volume / Time as a body of work explores the use of stone as a material. These sculptures are dictated by the natural properties of the stone; working with the volume of the material and emphasising its natural properties, formed through many thousands of years. The surface is meticulously finished by hand to exaggerate the form.

Patrick is one of the leading sculptors creating artworks for the Brightwells Yard in Farnham. The exhibition is simultaneous to the installation of new public art by Patrick in Farnham The sculptures for Brightwells Yard in Farnham are a series of ten large-scale sandstone figures standing

in the newly landscaped gardens. Each figure represents a different craft associated with the local area. They are arranged in three small groups, each group in conversation or looking out across the open space towards the other sculptures.

Other recent public art commissions include two large projects in Surrey; and The Regiment of Trees, Langley Vale Wood. The Regiment of Trees, commissioned by the Woodland Trust, are a series of twelve life-sized soldiers standing in a newly planted ‘regiment’ of trees. They commemorate the inspection of troops that took place at Epsom Downs in January 1915 by Lord Kitchener. The site is part of Langley Vale Wood, one of a series of memorial woods established by the Woodland Trust to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Patrick has also recently installed a series of five abstract sculptures as part of the River Tees Sculpture Trail. Each of these sculptures is a direct response to its location. Ranging from the gentle slopes of a village green to an intimate wooded glade, the iconic Tees Transporter Bridge to the wide open expanses of salt marshes and the sand dunes of the South Gare, each location and each sculpture is unique.

Patrick teaches stone carving at workshops, both at his studio and around the country. To celebrate the sculptures at Brightwells Yard there will be a program of workshops in the summer supported by the Waverley Borough Council.

I enjoy working on large scale public art commissions and responding to a brief. This method of working encourages me to find new creative solutions and to expand my practice. It has led to me working both figuratively and abstractly which to me is the best of both worlds.

The public art commissions often inform the smaller more personal sculptures that I exhibit, and vice versa. I find both equally exciting.”

CDW 2023 sees a total of 12 exhibition venues across Clerkenwell including: Design Fields, Contract, Light, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail, Platform, Ceramics of Italy, Old Sessions House (the festival hub), and two new additions – Catapult and The Garden.

While these unique venues will present over 300 design brands and emerging talent covering furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, materials and surfaces, textiles, decorative accessories, and lighting, an extensive network of more than 130 local showroom partners will host product launches, workshops and talks over the three days of the festival.

Headlining this year’s CDW Presents programme is a specially commissioned installation by British artist, Steve Messam – who exhibits internationally and is well known for his largescale, inflatable artwork reimagining our everyday surroundings.

At the festival, the County Durham-based artist will bring his distinctive public art – sponsored by 3D design software company, SketchUp – to St John’s Gate of the Order of St John. This site-specific piece, titled Gateway and measuring 6m (height) by 15.5m (length), will feature 27 giant spikes hand-sewn in a striking blue textile. It forms part of Messam’s ongoing art series taking over historic architectural sites – and inviting the public to examine their environment in a new light through its deliberately ambiguous shape and size. In addition to Gateway, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Messam’s artistic treatment of the iconic telephone boxes –sponsored by Budvar. K6, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the coronation of George V in 1935, is one of the most recognised telephone boxes; while K2 – also designed by Scott in 1924 – was the first national telephone box, many of which were initially installed in Clerkenwell. Spread over three locations, the former is located on Cowcross Street, and the latter can be found on Clerkenwell Road as well as outside St James’s Church.

CLARIDGE’S SET TO MARK THE CORONATION OF HIS MAJESTY THE KING

Claridge’s - the legendary Mayfair hotel - often referred to as the ‘annexe of Buckingham Palace’, will be unveiling a series of special royal moments this May 2023.

Claridge’s Archivist Kate Hudson has searched through the hotel’s distinguished historical archives to unveil some of its most memorable royal moments and treasures. Showcased for all to see in Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows, this display will have a particular focus on royal coronations throughout the 200 year life of the hotel. Mementos include pages from Queen Victoria’s diary, celebratory fans created by the hotel in 1911 for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, and Claridge’s menus and cocktail cards created for the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The showcase will also include treasures that have been collected over the years from a charming figural biscuit tin in the form of the royal state coronation coach.

Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows will be open to view in the hotel’s lobby throughout May 2023, when the Mayfair hotel will also be proudly flying Union Jack flags across its entrance bringing a sense of pomp and ceremony to Brook Street.

Meanwhile, the hotel’s signature Claridge’s Crest Cake, will have an extra regal touch. The crown in the hotel’s emblem acts as a symbol of status and Claridge’s royal appointment, and so – for the week of the Coronation – will be flourished with gold leaf. Claridge’s newest barThe Painter’s Room - will create a special drinks menu, nodding to the fact that King Charles

himself is a celebrated painter. The cocktail list will reflect the King’s love of his garden at Highgrove and all things floral, botanical and sustainable.

Claridge’s has long been seen as ‘the royal hostelry’ from as far back as the nineteenth century and has a wealth of royal stories and anecdotes. For one Coronation, extra emergency flagpoles had to be added to the brickwork of the hotel in order to fly the flags for the many different royals and royal dignitaries staying at Claridge’s. Another legendary royal tale was that a few days before a notable royal occasion, when a harassed diplomat telephoned the hotel and asked to speak to the King, the response was “Certainly sir, but which one?”.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUR DAUGHTERS INTO STEM

Boost your daughter’s confidence

Tell your daughters to “go for it”, says Dr Ems Lord, director of NRICH (nrich.maths.org), the University of Cambridge’s maths outreach programme. “You’ll never be bored if you love a challenge, and the thrill you get from solving a problem never wains.”

Stress the importance of not giving up, advises Rachel Youngman, deputy chief executive at the Institute of Physics (iop. org). It can be intimidating entering a male-dominated field, but it is important for young people to realise “you are just as worthy of a place on a STEM course as a male student, and just as able to achieve success”, she says.

experience at a university,” she says, recommending “emailing people and just seeing if you can shadow someone, even if it’s only for a few days, just so you can get a feel of what the job is like”.

When you think of women in science, some key names might come to mind, such as Marie Curie, Mae Jemison or Sarah Gilbert. But this is just scratching the surface: there are countless other women working to find cures for illnesses, teaching future generations about gravity or making coding seem as easy as breathing.

Women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) share their advice on how parents can positively encourage daughters into these fields…

It’s also worth challenging your own stereotypes, with Youngman saying: “Leave your preconceptions at the door, and acknowledge that your idea of what it means to study physics may not be an accurate one.”

“I think I was lucky, because my parents were very supportive,” says Dr Sadie Jones, outreach leader in astronomy at the University of Southampton. “I would say stuff like, ‘I want to be an astronaut’, and they would say: ‘Why not?’”

Reach out to organisations supporting women in STEM

As a parent, it can be hard to answer questions about STEM if you’re not involved in the field –but there are plenty of networks that can help.

Pioneer (joely-to.wixsite.com/pioneer) is a support network for girls wanting to pursue maths, set up by Joely To, who’s a student herself. It provides work experience with top companies, and gives girls the opportunity to connect with female mentors in the industry.

You could also reach out to Women In Tech (women-in-tech.org) – an organisation founded by Ayumi Moore Aoki to empower women to enter STEM, or The Blackett Lab Family Group (theblackettlabfamily.com) – a collective of black physicists.

Jones says parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re interested in. “I managed to get a week of work

Encourage curiosity from a young age

Lord says you don’t need to purchase expensive STEM tools or resources to spark curiosity in your child’s mind. “If families are looking to support their daughters, I’d encourage them to be more curious about their world when out and about,” she says. “Take time to notice the world around you, wonder at what you see and discuss what else you’d like to discover.”

Vanessa Oakes is doing her PhD in biomedicine, and is a clinical instructor in anatomic pathology at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (vetmed.vt.edu). Her advice is: “Take her to the zoo, take her to museums, spend time outdoors looking at grass and leaves and twigs, let her ask what they’re made of and how they grow. Every STEM field is about asking questions first, and finding answers only second.”

Advocate for STEM opportunities at school Schools can play a major role in a student’s development. “I remember when I was doing my GCSEs, the teacher actually showed us a video about supermassive black holes and I remember being so fascinated by that – and that’s what I ended up doing my PHD in,” says Jones. She now gives educational talks in schools, highlighting the contributions made by female scientists.

If you think your child’s school should be offering more STEM-based activities, why not feed that back and see if you can cultivate change?

What is Learning Support?

Mrs Krystle Flack, Head of Learning Support, Cranleigh School

to support them in the classroom. It could be a really minor detail but solving it sets them off on their own journey. We’re always helping to build that confidence that makes them independent and shows them not to compare themselves to others. The individual experience is at the heart of everything we do, whether it’s just strategies, differentiation in the classroom or one-to-one support – the idea is that we are building students up to flourish and thrive, regardless of any challenges or difficulties they face.

Many students will have coping strategies and will have learned to travel the academic journey on their own by using these, but then get to a level where their strategies stop working, perhaps around GCSEs or A-Levels. So it’s not uncommon to find that students who seemed to manage in the first few years at senior school then need help further down the line.

If pupils don’t need full support they can have regular reviews or check-ins at odd times, such as when facing exams and stress is looming. We can support with homework too, so if a student is really struggling with a concept we can break it down for them and that gives them the skillset to go and use resources correctly and find answers for themselves. They can then go into exams with a little more confidence.

cranleigh.org

Learning support is all about developing skillsets to enable pupils to become independent learners. The aim is to ensure that students who need support can thrive, not just at school but in the outside world. The strategies we put in place now will help them to succeed into higher education and their eventual careers.

We avoid using labels and look at each child as an individual. Labels, such as dyslexia, become something that we work around and with to help the student, ideally with parents on board too. If we have a good relationship with parents it supports the student and we can allow parents to take a step back and provide the care and nurturing that teenagers need, whilst we take on the role of pushing the student to progress.

We aim to help each student identify their skills and discover how we might need to adapt teaching

A guide to School Open Days

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…

• Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting

• It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly

• Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.

• Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally

• Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….

Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.

• How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?

• Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?

• Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too

compelled in pressure)

• What are the classroom sizes?

• What is expected of my child with regard to homework?

• Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?

• Is there a bullying policy?

• What lunchtime meals are available?

• What sports and music facilities are available?

• What after school clubs and trips are available?

• How many pupils branch out into further education?

After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

THE NEED FOR HUMANITIES

It won’t take you long to find something in the media to outline the issue that humanities are taking a dip. In recent years, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Guardian and BBC have reported on the declining uptake and prestige of the humanities. However, Hurst College believes that they play a hugely significant role, and their power must not be undervalued.

With worldwide current affairs seeing a rise of right wing and centralised politics in Europe; abortion laws resurfacing in the US; climate, energy and cost of living crises; war and conflict in Europe and beyond; the study of the humanities is ultimately more important now than ever before.

Hurst College created a Humanities Faculty in September 2022, to include the departments of geography, history, religious studies, politics, business, economics, sociology and classical civilisation from Year 6 in the Junior Prep School through to Upper Sixth in the Senior School. A fantastically diverse set of subjects and key stages all working together collaboratively, to share love for the humanities, instil passion and enthusiasm in pupils and make them acutely aware of the world around them.

The role of humanities is a vital one. From Key Stage 2, pupils are taught about a range of cultures, traditions, norms and values, social skills, how to show empathy for others. At a young age they foster justice and equality from humanities teaching. Throughout Key Stage 3 and beyond, pupils learn to deal critically and logically with subjective, complete, imperfect information and

weigh evidence sceptically, to consider more than one side of every question.

Members of the new faculty will structure, linearise and design an effective curriculum which interlinks topics between subjects and key stages. They will effectively outline skills, topic areas and cross-overs which pupils can apply to real life contemporary examples. This allows for scaffolding of the key skills, especially higher order logic and thinking, and improvement of writing styles. Plus, a focus on teaching the harder components of the humanities world - powers of analysis, discursive writing and evaluation skills. The humanities are vital for developing important life skills which pupils can use beyond their school years. It encourages them to debate, challenge ideas, reflect upon their own personal experiences and empathise with those of others who are very different. The faculty also promotes a range of super-curricular options and believes these are vital for preparing pupils for life and society. These include lectures, guest speaker events, workshops and trips.

Ultimately, the goal is to facilitate a love and excitement for the humanities and to show their relevance. Currently, the faculty is buzzingnumbers of pupils opting for these subjects are incredibly high. The robust set of departments are paving the way for creating well-rounded, thoughtful, inquisitive, passionate students who will go on to be successful global citizens in the world beyond school.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

ROYAL ASCOT STYLE GUIDE

EVOLVES TO REVEAL A BRAND-NEW INSPIRATIONAL LOOKBOOK FOR 2023

For the first time in over a decade, Ascot Racecourse has unveiled a new look and feel for its annual Style Guide, which has been renamed The Royal Ascot Lookbook.

This year sees the British racing institution take a new direction, producing the Royal Ascot Lookbook 2023. The inspirational editorial comprises six fashion edits: Luxe, Tailoring, Pre-Loved & Rental, Vintage, High Street and Emerging Designer.

Partnering with world-renowned photographer Damian Foxe and legendary stylist Luke Jefferson Day, the new lookbook perfectly encapsulates the zeitgeist of occasionwear dressing for the spring/ summer 2023 season.

Whilst the Official Royal Ascot Dress Code remains unchanged, the transformation of the Style Guide offers inspiration across the Royal Enclosure, Queen Anne Enclosure and Village Enclosure, encouraging racegoers to dream up an outfit that is authentic to their personal style and approach to sartorial shopping.

The new direction focuses on a deeply original sense of personal style inspired by fashion magazine editorial, elevating the creative direction to entice racegoers to get lost in the magical world of occasionwear. From retro-inspired vintage

looks evocative of the 1970s to exquisite tailoring and avant-garde millinery, the Lookbook is an inspirational fashion feast with inspiration to suit all budgets.

Luxe Edit – Featuring soft, buttery silk gowns by Roksanda, velvet mirrored suiting by Gucci and perfectly paired three-piece morning dress by Favourbrook, the Luxe Edit showcases a reimagined approach to designer dressing.

Pre-loved & Rental Edit – With sustainable dressing at the forefront of the style agenda, the Pre-Loved & Rental Edit showcases spectacular second-hand and hireable fashion from leaders in the rental space including HURR, Selfridges Rental, Moss Bros and Oliver Brown. From raiding grandma’s hat boxes to scouring charity shops for treasures, this edit is for the sartorially adventurous who are after unique fashion finds.

High Street Edit – Depicting style that transcends ‘off the peg’ suit buying, the High Street Edit sparks intrigue in summer linens, mint tailoring, alternative prints and glamorous dresses suitable for all enclosures. Featured brands include Ascot’s Official Ladieswear Sponsor LK Bennett, Sandro, All Saints and Reformation.

Vintage Edit – Complete with sleek 1980s skirt suits by Thierry Mugler, preppy blazers by Vivienne Westwood and flamboyant

silhouettes, the Vintage Edit evokes a sleek and surprisingly modern aesthetic for raceday styling, inherited from iconic wardrobes of yesteryear.

Tailoring Edit – Taking pleats and darts to the next level, the immaculate tailoring is here to make a statement in the Lookbook. Daring colour block suits, contemporary soft shades, and traditional fine tailoring, the Tailoring Edit presents inspiration from Zimmermann, Edward Sexton and RXQUETTE.

Emerging Designer Edit – Celebrating looks from the most coveted up-and-coming fashion designers. Luke pairs a billowing S.S. Daley checked suit with epic dream catcherinspired millinery crafted by Victoria Grant. Never included designers Richard Quinn, Charles Jeffery LOVERBOY and Ahluwalia, are heralded in the Emerging Designer Edit.

Felicity Barnard, Commercial Director, Ascot Racecourse, comments: “There are very few events that allow people to embrace dressing for a special occasion on such a global scale and each year Royal Ascot becomes the most followed display of sartorial elegance and individual flair – a true celebration of style that is woven into the very fabric of Ascot’s DNA. I look forward to seeing the racecourse brimming with colour and energy as we head into the spring/summer season.

“This year sees an exciting evolution for what has been known as the Royal Ascot Style Guide for more than a decade. For 2023 Ascot is proud to unveil the Royal Ascot Lookbook where, for the first time, we look to inspire people through six new fashion edits that draw from current styling trends. Responsible style remains a key part of Royal Ascot as we continue to find ways to dress, whether that is renting occasionwear or investing in forever pieces.”

Luke Jefferson Day, stylist, comments: “This season I wanted to encourage unexpected freedom under the guidance of the enclosure dress codes and inspire racegoers to be a little more unconventional and inventive in the way they

dress up, and how they source their looks. We’ve championed innovative British designers, whilst also showcasing international brands from further afield.

Damian Foxe, photographer and narrator of the Lookbook comments: “As a long-time collaborator of Royal Ascot, it has been a joy to be part of the Lookbook’s evolution as it moves away from a means to communicate the dress code, and instead towards becoming a source of fashion inspiration and a bellwether in the world of occasion dressing.

“For 2023, we have decided to completely move away from creating a Lookbook dictated by enclosure, in favour of one which puts style centre stage. In many ways, I think this reflects what we are seeing as the evolution of style at Royal Ascot and the myriad of looks on show from its racegoers”.

Royal Ascot will be held from Tuesday 20th –Saturday 24th June 2023. ascot.com

Treating prostate cancer with focal therapy

Adiagnosis of prostate cancer can be frightening and overwhelming. There are many treatment options and whilst this might feel bewildering, the wide range of options represents a chance to choose the right one, along with your medical team, to successfully treat or manage your cancer.

PROSTATE CANCER IN THE UK

More than 130 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every day in the UK. There has been a sharp increase in incidence since the 1990s and it is now the number one form of cancer affecting men in the UK. Diagnosis with any cancer can be frightening, but for many men, being told they have prostate cancer can also spark additional worries about their continence and sexual health.

The good news is that as well as being one of the most common forms of cancer, prostate cancer is also one of the most treatable. Survival rates have trebled over the last 40 years and new and minimally invasive treatments, such as focal therapies are helping men treat their cancer with reduced chance of side effects.

FOCAL THERAPY IS A MINIMALLYINVASIVE TREATMENT OPTION

Focal therapy is a treatment option suitable for men who have medium (intermediate) risk prostate cancer, ideally in one part of the prostate. As it treats only the cancer, and a small area around the cancer, the side effects of treatment are much less than those for traditional prostate cancer surgery or radiotherapy. It requires a careful assessment of

the prostate using MRI and biopsy information. For men who are suitable, it is done as a day surgery procedure. Follow up is similar to being on active surveillance, and includes MRI scans and sometimes biopsy.

It allows some men to continue to have good sexual and urinary function, while treating the cancer. For example with following the HIFU procedure (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound), less than 1 in 100 men reported urine leakage and 2 in 3 men had no problems with sexual function, while the remaining third were able to with tablets. As it’s a small treatment, it can be repeated, and if necessary, surgery or radiotherapy can be used at a later date.

There are a number of different energies used in focal therapy for prostate cancer, including ultrasound (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound, or HIFU) and electroporation (passing an electrical current across the tumour to kill it). King Edward VII’s Hospital is one of the few private hospitals in the UK to offer these treatments.

KING EDWARD VII’S HOSPITAL FOCAL THERAPY CENTRE

The King Edward VII’s Hospital Focal Therapy Centre is led by world-leading experts, supported by nurse specialists and a multi-disciplinary

team meaning they’re able to offer personalised treatment plans tailored to your needs and recovery. Using the very latest technology including HIFU and the da Vinci xi surgical robot and located in a convenient central London location, you can access fast treatment for your condition.

It can be an overwhelming and nerve-wrecking time and starting private prostate cancer treatment can be confusing. The team at King Edward VII’s Hospital is able to talk you through every step of the process, choose the right treatment for you and get you back to living life to the fullest.

Debunking the Myth

Meet Dr Sina Salimi, Founder and Medical Director at estetica clinics for Surrey and Berkshire.

With more than 20 years in the aesthetic industry he’s heard it all and is keen to dispel a few of the many myths surrounding the most popular facial procedures, especially those which repetitively crop up and have a tendency to snowball into false truths.

“Many people think they fully understand the treatments and procedures carried out in aesthetic clinics. But, often this “knowledge” is just an accumulation of bad hearsay and not founded on any sort of considerable or accredited research they’ve done at all. I feel that, as a well known practitioner, it is part of my duty of care to put the correct messages out there and debunk these myths.

1). Aesthetic treatments are dangerous. Aesthetic treatments and procedures are safe - when done properly. It’s the non regulation of these treatments that is unsafe. It is critical to ensure that you undergo these treatments at certified clinics and with regulated products and safety measures in place and only under a medically trained practitioner. As a patient you should look at every treatment as a medical procedure and also make sure you research, in depth, the credibility of the practitioner you choose. I’d even go as far as saying avoid beauticians. Going to a medically

trained practitioner protects you, as a patient, as we are all regulated by the GMC (add more here). plus we have years of medical training behind us.

2). Dermal fillers will leave my face saggier when they wear off.

All dermal fillers will be naturally broken down by our body after time and the effects will gradually wear off. But, with today’s fillers, many of which contain Hyaluronic acid, the skin’s moisture levels are boosted (along with collagen production) from the inside and can vastly improve skin tone, texture and elasticity thus providing long term plumping benefits even after the fillers have been completely metabolised. So, you are often left with skin in better condition than before.

3). Lip fillers always give you big lips. This is a huge misconception. Sizing up with lips is an option for sure, but, as with any dermal filler, not always a requirement. Lip fillers increase hydration, correct asymmetry, and improve balance between the top and bottom lip. Sadly social media is saturated with overfilled lips and this creates a lot of confusion around the ‘lip filler’ treatment.

88 APRIL 2023 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
HERE I HAVE LISTED THE TOP 6 MOST COMMON INACCURACIES THAT SURROUND FACIAL AESTHETIC PROCEDURES:”
“Sizing up with lips is an option for sure, but, as with any dermal filler, not always a requirement. Lip fillers increase hydration, correct asymmetry, and improve balance between the top and bottom lip”

Most assume lip filler to always equate to the duck look - hugely unnatural, stuck on looking, cartoon lips. But, if you choose a reputable clinic, like estetica, they will never overfill, and in fact they will refuse to create that look and also strongly advise against seeking that outcome elsewhere. At estetica we gauge your ideal lip shape and volume on your face shape and existing lip size.

4). If I don’t like the way I look after filler, I am stuck with it until it dissolves.

Filler formulated with hyaluronic acid (which we use) can always be reversed if necessary, by being injected with a specific enzyme. It’s easy and immediate. I’d like to add here that at estetica we never use permanent filler. We also bespoke every injectable procedure according to a patient’s unique anatomy, baseline anatomy, severity of skin laxity and texture, lifestyle and also desired outcome. So, reversing fillers is very rare for us and patients are thrilled with results.

5). Botox will freeze my face.

It is a common misunderstanding that Botulinum Toxin freezes your face. The outcome is in fact actually all down to the practitioner. Anti Wrinkle injections (often called Botox - which is actually a brand name and thus a misnomer), relax the muscles, preventing them from contracting or moving. It is therefore important to go to a medically qualified, experienced practitioner who can decipher and also discuss with you how many units are needed and in which areas and to what effect. With the correct and precise injection patterns and quantities, these injections can also “lift” eyebrows, raise sagging eyebrows and in turn help reduce hooding of the upper eyelid. Additionally, the wrong amount can increase any ptosis already present in a patient’s eyes, but a qualified practitioner would point this out before carrying out any treatment.

6). Botox is only for wrinkles.

Proving very popular for preventing wrinkles, Botulinum Toxins are not just used for this outcome - in fact they have many other benefits, both aesthetic and medical. It was first used medically by Ophthalmologists for eye muscle disorders, very successfully, and is still used for those disorders today. Additionally it is used, equally successfully, for pain management,

sweat control, preventing or reducing bruxism and gummy smiles and also muscle spasm and migraines.

I hope that, armed with this information and myth debunking, I have given you a greater understanding of the facial aesthetics industry, products and procedures, and thus greater confidence to begin your own rejuvenation journey with the correct clinic and practitioner.

DESIGNING A COTTAGE GARDEN WITH BRIDGMAN

Create a romantic cottage garden straight out of a fairytale with award-winning furniture makers, Bridgman.

For over 45 years, British furnituremakers Bridgman understand more than most the importance of harmony and happiness at home and in the garden. That’s why, their expertise and passion have inspired them to create beautiful furniture that transforms the way we live, relax, entertain and enjoy the finer things in life for 3-generations.

This year, create your very own ‘cottagecore’ inspired space with Bridgman’s luxurious outdoor furniture and accessory collections, designed to help you embrace the idyllic English country lifestyle and get closer to nature than ever before.

ORGANIC PATHS

Elegant pathways and patios are an easy way to add interest to your space. Make sure to avoid straight lines by designing winding paths that create an interesting journey through your space. Combine ethically sourced brick, sandstone and granite with the rustic textures of gravel, wood chips and stepping stones to keep things light and natural. Match these organic shapes and materials to your dining and lounging furniture to truly transform your outdoors…

SECLUDED SEATING

Immerse in your beautiful cottage garden with a secluded space that’s entirely your own. Create a secret seating spot by placing a cosy garden sofa or bistro set beneath a tree or underneath a floral archway. Use timeless rattan furniture to complement your garden’s natural beauty, placing it in a space that offers shade from the hot sun while providing a wonderful view of your stunning garden. If a sudden downpour does seek to ruin your relaxation, Bridgman’s exclusive 100% Waterproof Cushions come as standard across their All Seasons Collections, so all that’s left for you to do is sit back and relax with a good book and lovely cup of tea.

NATURAL CHARM

When planning your cottage garden, don’t be afraid to leave formality behind. Part of the charm of this style of garden is its more rustic and natural design. Instead of planning out every single detail, keep in mind that there is no one ‘perfect formula’ for creating a cottage garden. Give every aspect of your space wild and whimsical touches, like placing hanging lanterns in your trees for a rustic ambience.

To transform your garden this spring, visit bridgman.co.uk or head to Bridgman Walton-on-Thames at Brassey House, 22-24 New Zealand Avenue, KT12 1QD to see, feel and experience Bridgman’s exquisite collections for yourself.

Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites’ stylised depiction of woodlands, the garden is filled with plants selected for their perfected forms.

The RSPCA Garden - designed by Martyn Wilson, built by Landscape Associates. Featuring a contemporary structure akin to a wildlife observation hide, enabling views out into the space. A rill, framed from recycled plastic, flows through the garden, creating movement and sound. It cascades into a pool, providing a spot for quiet contemplation, as well as a source of water for wildlife. The whole space is enclosed by hedging and a canopy of native trees and shrubs, essential for birds and wildlife. the garden hopes to inspire visitors to mark the RSPCA’s 200th birthday by creating outdoor spaces for all creatures to share.

Hamptons Mediterranean Garden - designed by Filippo Dester, built by Garden Club London. A contemporary outdoor living space redolent with the look, feel and smell of sunny Mediterranean landscapes; a tranquil place where the warm textures of the architecture merge into nature. An

outdoor kitchen is the garden’s focus with a shady alfresco dining space to relax, enjoy cooking and entertain friends and family.

Bistro and lounge sets are perfectly versatile for myriad

uses and offer solutions for every space. You can tuck one of these sets almost anywhere or keep them centre stage on a patio or raised decking. For dining al fresco with friends, a corner set could be the answer for the compact urban garden or small terrace, as they offer an immediate solution to space saving and create a neat area especially for the purpose of entertaining. A hanging chair makes a statement wherever it’s placed but is particularly perfect for making the most of a secluded corner. New this season – the ingenious addition of a clip-on side table allows you to keep a book and a glass of something chilled reassuringly close to hand. Offering versatility to suit all spaces, an extendable day bed transforms easily from a neat bench seat into a relaxed daybed for more serious lounging as the mood and occasion takes you. Compact outdoor furniture pieces aren’t limited to just small spaces. In larger outdoor areas both bistro and corner sets are also perfect for zoning or creating cosy little nooks for when there’s nothing better than curling up in the shade with a book.

Discover the great outdoors with Cane-Line…

carving out a protected piece of space within its loosely woven walls. A sculptural silhouette creatively crafted from weather-resistant, weave, it’s at once a visual focal point and a shaded, private area to have to yourself. Hang it on a rope to add a meditative swing to stolen moments. Need some extra outside space to host or relax in? When no other areas seem quite right? Fashion a new one in seconds with Cane-Line’s Hyde Parasol, which forms its own living zone

The season of outdoor living is upon us, and as open-air spaces become areas to extend life into, we should make the most of every minute. Renowned outdoor design brand Cane-Line knows the effect fresh air, seeing the sky and – dare we dream it – a flash of sunlight can have on the day, its pieces focused on creating joy, as well as the weatherproof practicalities.

The 2023 Cane-Line collection of designer outdoor furniture doesn’t do conventions. Picture a set of outdoor chairs, an outdoor table, an outdoor sofa. It doesn’t look like that. Every contemporary, boundary-pushing al fresco design is carefully crafted to create daily servings of indulgence, intimacy, satisfaction, smiles, charm, and cheer. Let’s explore the highlights and how they can impact our day-to-day lives.

Self-care is the phrase on everybody’s lips, but so often not at the top of to-do lists. We all need some time to ourselves, to step back and assess, or to put everything to one side and just be. That’s where Cane-Line’s Hive Hanging Chair comes in, an encompassing shape which hugs the sitter,

114 APRIL 2023 HOME & PROPERTY

wherever it travels. Sunny or not, the expansive square canopy is architectural, like an extension of an indoor ceiling, instantly creating a room-like feel, shade, and a sense of seclusion, everywhere it stands.

Taking lounge furniture outside can sometimes feel wrong. That’s what living rooms are for! Think again. Who says outdoor living is only for functional occasions like hosting, eating and cooking. Why not relax al fresco? Take a book, take a cup of tea, take another person and take time out under the sun. It’ll be the highlight of your day.

The Peacock Chair straddles the bridge between indoor and out – pretty and practical, visually like something that belongs inside, but ready to be exposed to the elements. Member of a comprehensive collection of designer outdoor seating, the range’s brutalist grey palette echoes the tones of many buildings’ exteriors (and the occasional sky...), while its curved forms mirror contemporary interior trends, with natural accents pulling them both together. Calming the designer chair’s predominant greyscale tones are teak legs and woven seats made from weather-proof soft rope, which speak of nature and craft tradition, adding an elegant, shouldn’t-that-be-protectedfrom-the-rain edge.

There’s a moment when the evening starts drifting, begins to loosen and unravel. When pudding is finished. When guests begin to float away. When there’s nothing left to do but deeply exhale. It’s a dream-like, gentle time when light has faded but the day’s not come to a proper conclusion. There’s still time for something more.

How to tackle this hazy feeling furniture-wise?

With something similarly undefined, that can change and evolve as well as forming areas that are alluring, easy and oh-so comfortable. Enter the Cane-Line Capture Sofa, which effortlessly harmonises with any backdrop, so the eye

smoothly meanders over its calming curves before the body melts into them. Its rounded corners and integrated tables prompt socialising. Its tonal taupe upholstery and teak details create tranquillity. Its sink-into-me softness is all about snuggling. Finally, say goodbye to limitations with the Choice Chair: a modern interchangeable seating system of different parts, it’s created with flexibility, classic Scandi style, and the environment at its forefront. The pioneering modern chair is based around a seat produced with up to 98% recycled polypropylene, its cover and legs designed to be changed without tools, transforming it from metal sled-based bar stool to teak-legged dining chair. And at the end of its life? Effortlessly recycled.

MAKE A STATEMENT WITH A LUXURY POOL

every aspiration – if you can imagine it, we can create it.

But we don’t stop there - if you already own a long-established pool that needs a new lease of life, our Refurbishment Team can transform your outdated pool into a stylish new one.

Whether you want a traditional swimming pool, one with a movable floor or want to revitalise an older pool, we will be by your side when the pool is completed. Our expert Pool and Spa Servicing Engineers will commission the pool and then provide servicing to keep your pool in peak condition all year round.

Abespoke luxury swimming pool is one of the most spectacular additions to any home. It should be a focal point that draws the eye and delights you every time you look at it. Getting that dream pool is all about working with a pool designer and builder that shares your vision and passion.

That is where London Swimming Pool Company comes in. We have been designing outstandingly beautiful pools for clients for over 30 years, and many have won design accolades. What sets us apart is how we work with our clients – interpreting what they want and ensuring their pools reflect their lifestyle, taste and décor.

We achieve this by collaborating with clients, their architects and interior designers, and worldclass manufacturers that supply high-quality equipment that enables us to construct pools that not only look fantastic but are technologically advanced and energy efficient.

A prime example is a pool built with a movable floor system. This allows the pool to be concealed beneath a solid, load-bearing floor that matches your decor, so that the pool area can then be used for other social activities.

Not only can you make your pool vanish at will, but the movable floor can also be set at different depths to suit everyone in the family, from a shallow paddling pool for young children to full depth for adults and experienced swimmers.

London Swimming Pool Company designs and builds elegant indoor and outdoor pools to satisfy

Our Servicing Engineers provide comprehensive regular pool and spa servicing and maintenance. This includes the vital task of keeping the water in pristine condition, ensuring safety for bathers and protecting the longevity of the pool. Your regular engineer will advise you on the frequency of servicing based on whether your pool is located indoors or outdoors, its size, frequency of use and number of bathers. You will receive a bespoke programme to suit your schedule and needs throughout the year, including when you are away from home.

Opening outdoor pools for the spring/summer season is one of our specialities. These services involve a thorough deep clean of the pool, the addition of certain chemicals and inspection of the plant room equipment. You can use these services even if you are not a regular service client. And of course, we provide an emergency service in London and the Home Counties. If something goes wrong with your pool or spa you can rely on us to remedy the issue promptly, so you do not miss any swimming time!

Frustrated with your home internet? Orbi Mesh WiFi System is the solution.

WiFi has become a fundamental part of life, whether for leisure or work. WiFi and internet are so closely related that many people don’t make the distinction between them. But you depend on your internet service provider’s router to supply WiFi, and you may be disappointed with the signal strength. Especially if you have a larger home, or a garden which extends some distance from your house.

Are you relying on the lagging router from your current internet provider to get strong WiFi everywhere? Have you tried Wireless repeaters, but were dissatisfied with results?

Fortunately, WiFi Mesh systems are the solution to spread stronger signals throughout your home and garden. Unlike WiFi repeaters, which only extend your main router’s signal, Mesh systems create a new, boosted wireless network across your entire home.

Mesh systems give you the ability to fully enjoy the internet speeds you have subscribed for thanks to a WiFi up to ten times faster! They are usually based on 2 or more units, which create a single, reliable WiFi network, expandable with additional satellites. Connected devices are handed off seamlessly to the unit with the strongest signal, making Mesh WiFi ideal for large homes and businesses with WiFi “dead spots”.

For today’s needs as well as tomorrow’s, we recommend premium WiFi, meaning products which are easy to install and use and which offer the speeds and capacity to support your family’s evolving needs. Premium WiFi upgrades your

home, opening new possibilities, and elevating the things you already love. Imagine your hobby, favourite activity, anything you’re passionate about, taken to the next level with high-speed WiFi.

NETGEAR’s Orbi WiFi 6E Mesh Systems bring unparalleled performance based on cutting edge, patented technology. On top of that, the units are elegant enough to fit unobtrusively into your décor and secure enough to automatically shield your family from external threats such as hackers and identity thieves.

NETGEAR Orbi 960 series Mesh System: Nocompromise, best-in-class performance, capacity and range

The Orbi RBKE963 Mesh system features best-in-class, lightning-fast WiFi Internet access to homes of up to 7,500 square feet, with packages available for further coverage of up to 15,500 sq. ft. The Orbi 960 is also available in stylish white or black designs, making it a welcome addition to any home, and with up to 200 devices even the most demanding smart homes are covered.

If you’re tired of weak WiFi signals and slow internet speeds, consider a WiFi Mesh System like NETGEAR’s Orbi 960 series. You’ll enjoy lightning-fast, wall-to-wall WiFi access, seamless network operation, and the ability to expand coverage as needed. Shop online for the white or black edition today.

GOING FOR GREEN

Because green really is the new grey, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Sage accents, faux foliage, grasses and leafy illustrations are all bringing fresh life into home decor right now.

As springtime hots up and buds bloom, the temptation to forage for greenery and channel new beginnings is hard to resist. In fact, John Lewis is even citing green as the new grey, with a spike in sales for all things green.

“Avocado has been in the style wilderness since those Seventies bathtubs were ripped out in favour of dazzling white,” says John Lewis colour expert, Melanie Archer. “But now it’s finding love again among a new generation, who want some colour and joy in their lives.

“What we are seeing is far more than green shoots – with the colour poised to overtake grey as the nation’s interior shade of choice,” Archer adds.
