It seems fashionable in today’s society to lay people off or fire them even if it’s not warranted. It’s all about the bottom line. Our bottom line is important also. If we don’t make money we will be one of the causalities of this recession. However we’ve already taken steps last year to ensure that won’t happen. I am fully committed to make sure our doors stay open and our sport lives on. That’s not necessarily the case however with our friends in the marine industry. I’ve been in this industry for the past 30 years and I’ve never seen things so bad. I know you understand that especially if you’ve tried to sell your boat to buy another one. But time will heal our country’s ills and our industry will come back stronger than ever. Until that time however some companies have had to cut back on their sponsorship. Understandable. But you have to know this is not what they wanted to do; in these cases it’s mandatory. We’ve been very fortunate in that the majority of the sponsors did not drop us completely. You’re to be thanked for that. If you didn’t support our sponsors, they would be gone completely. So for the next year we’ll have to take care of them
like they’ve done for us. First the people who say goodbye to the SKA. Sebago shoes, Ocean LED, Boone, and Rule. We’re quite sure Rule will be back in the future along with Boone but the other two are gone. Midnight Express is new however, and we’re real happy to have them. They build an incredible boat. Mercury was forced to cut our contract in half. From that we will be short five motors to give away, down from 11, and we will have to eliminate the “Go to the Nationals on Us” program for the top finisher in a Division in a Mercury powered boat. They are keeping their Junior Angler Scholarship program we started last year. As of this date we do not have a top prize for the Junior Angler of the Year but we are working on it. Yamaha has cut their contract by a quarter. The only program we will eliminate is the bonus at the end of the year to the top three Pros. However the Angler of the Year team will get a Yamaha Outboard. That’s it. All others are back on board so I think we’ve survived quite well. No, we are not giving up in finding more sponsors. Mercury knew their cutbacks would hurt us this
year so they gave us the opportunity to add another motor sponsor. We have been in contact with the other two but have heard nothing yet. Plus we’re working every lead we have. When the FLW collapsed I sent Irwin Jacobs, the owner of the circuit as well as Wellcraft and Hydra Sports boats, a letter telling him how sorry I was to see them go. Their trail made us at SKA work harder and I told him that also. I then told him that after selling many members of his circuit his products with vision of fame and fortune he should support them on our circuit by either being a sponsor or doing contingencies for his brands thru us. To date we have heard nothing. All my ranting over the years about supporting our sponsors has paid off. They know the value of your business. But we can’t stop now; we must be ever vigilant. Turn to the back of this magazine and once again familiarize yourself with those who support our sport and once again pledge your support of those who support us. It truly works. Tight lines! —Jack

Golden tilefish are challenging to catch, wonderful to eat, and an interesting break from the stress of tournament fishing.
The
baited hooks were firmly on the bottom, 650 feet below the boat, when the rod tip bounced once, then twice. With a smooth lift the interloper was impaled on one of the big circle hooks and it was time to go to work. Cranking up that much line with a pugnacious fish bouncing and pulling hard to get back into the hole in the bottom where it lives is akin to reeling up a running jackhammer from the roof of a 50 story building. Lift and crank, lift and crank, lift and crank—the line seems almost endless until finally, way down there, you catch a glimpse of a golden shape spiraling toward the surface accompanied by a release of air that bubbles up ahead of it. After you fight a few of these babies on conventional tackle most fishermen are begging for power tools. A piece I did on deep drop fishing in the Bahamas for the Angler a few years ago sparked some interesting emails so I thought I’d follow it up with one on a deep dwelling species that is available to most of you without having to make the run across the Stream. England to south Florida. They grow pretty big—my largest to date weighed 55 pounds—and their fillets are phenomenal on the dinner table! I can hear some of you chiding me already. “C’mon, that’s not sport fishing.” Maybe you’re right, but figuring out where these fish live, catching them and enjoying the incredible feast they provide makes the proposition interesting, fun and rewarding and isn’t that what fishing is all about? Golden tilefish, actually the correct name is great northern tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps), are brawny and beautiful with bronze colored backs that transition to gold sides and a white belly with a bright yellow streak down the middle. They have huge heads and a dorsal fin that extends from the characteristic rudder-shaped flap of skin on its crown all the way to their tail. They come equipped with a large, toothy mouth with serious crushing power, which they use to subdue some of the weird bottom creatures they like to eat. Young tiles devour stuff like brittle stars and an unusual deepwater crab called squat lobster, but larger ones go more for the gusto eating full sized lobsters, crabs and other fish. A Tilefish History Searching in the archives revealed that the existence of tilefish was ANGLER | March 2009
unknown until the late 1870s when a commercial fisherman out for cod was pushed considerably farther offshore than his usual haunts by a freak gale. Taking the storm as providence from the Almighty, the old salt deployed his bottom gear in deep water somewhere near Block Canyon southeast of Long Island, New York and caught these strange, golden fish that stunned the ichthyologists of the day. He was the first to discover the great northern tilefish, which, as it turns out, make their homes in burrows they dig in areas of soft, sedimentary bottom. What they didn’t know at the time was the range of these fish extended all the way to the Gulf of Mexico! A few years later, in the summer of 1882 to be exact, there was a mass die-off of tilefish. Sailing ships coming to the East Coast from Europe reported passing through miles of floating dead tilefish along with other unusual deepwater fishes stretching from New York south to Baltimore. The fish showed no signs of disease and some years later it was surmised that they were killed en mass by a freak movement of unusually cold bottom water. This event leads us to an interesting characteristic of these fish. Even though they live at considerable depths ranging from 350 to 750 feet, they are actually dependant on relatively warm water found along the edge of the Shelf that remains around 50 degrees year round. During an early spring exploratory tilefish trip out of Cape May, New Jersey a few years ago
we noted how warm the tilefish we caught felt when brought up from 600 feet. The surface temperature was still cold, but their body temps were around 50 degrees. But I digress, back to the history lesson. Tilefish were rediscovered as a commercial fishery in 1915. Sailing vessels would tow dories offshore where they would use bottom long lines, deployed and retrieved by hand, the sailing vessel acting as a mother ship. In 1915 commercial landings were 148 metric tons, but that jumped to 4,500 metric tons in 1916 just before the fishery came to an abrupt halt with the start of World War I when German U-Boats began harassing U.S. shipping in the approaches to New York Harbor. In one reported instance recounted by an elderly gentleman of German descent who was one of the last of the tilefish dory fisherman, a U-Boat approached his vessel and prepared to sink it when he recognized the captain of the sub from his school days in the old country. After a quick reunion, the sub captain ordered everyone off the sailing vessel and into the dories before sinking it with the deck gun. The sub then towed the dories within view of Montauk and cast them off so the fishermen, including his old acquaintance, could row to safety. Friends may be friends, but orders are orders in time of war. The commercial fishery was rediscovered again in the 1970s with far more mechanized bottom longlines and annual landings

jumping quickly back to 4,000 metric tons in 1979, but began declining to half that shortly thereafter. The overfishing was halted not by management, but by the big money being paid for swordfish, which attracted a lot of the boats away from tilefish and into pelagic drift long lining for broadbills. One fish’s downfall was another’s salvation and the reduction in commercial pressure allowed tilefish stocks to rebuild. Today there is a small, but growing recreational interest in golden tilefish and the regulations vary from the north to the south so check with your state fish and game regulations before heading out. Finding Gold Catching tilefish, like football, is a game of yards. The key is finding a concentration of fish and dropping your baited rigs into the colony and the game can vary depending on the area you’re fishing. Golden tile range from Nova Scotia to the Gulf of Mexico, but the largest concentrations are found from George’s Banks to the Hudson Canyon. Scientists surmise that the composition of the sea floor within their preferred temperature and depth ranges has a lot to do Up close and friendly with a 20-lb golden tilefish. with it. Remember, tilefish live in burrows that they carve into flat or sloping areas along the sea floor. It’s tough to burrow in rocky or sandy bottom because one is too hard and the other rapidly fills back in. Clay is ideal and there seems to be great expanses of it around these areas. As you range south clay becomes harder to find and when you do such areas can vary greatly is size. While exploring the areas around the Wilmington and Baltimore Canyons we hit on some interesting clues. The majority of this area seems to be sand that appears as a solid, dark red reading on the depth finder, but we encountered areas with relatively steep changes in depth and slides occurred there exposing older clay substrates under the sand. We started looking for such areas of steep changes and, when we found them, the color of the bottom on the depth finder would change from dark red to light green since the clay absorbs more of the signal generated by the transducer altering the return signal. While you rarely mark tilefish, remember they live in borrows, we caught tilefish in most of these spots. My captain friends had found a few such spots on previous trips, but they didn’t always hold fish leading him to believe colonies migrated from shallower to deeper areas with the seasons or congregated into spawning aggregations, usually in April and May. On one trip his charter broke the world record on a spot in 700 feet of water. That same day they caught several other goldens over 30 pounds. I later discussed our migration theory with tilefish expert Bruce Freeman, then head of marine fisheries for New Jersey and a well published marine 7
biologist who did much of the seminal work on the species, and he explained that such seasonal migrations could very well take place caused by spawning behavior or even by the movement of deep bottom currents that might shift their preferred temperature range. Tilefish are temperature sensitive and studies Freeman was involved with in the 1980s indicated that the band of warm bottom water they rely on tends to expand and constrict with the seasons. During the winter it contracts to a narrow band of ten miles or less in width while during the summer it widens considerably, which lends credence to the movement of these fish. 8
Gearing Up Obviously fishing for tile is accomplished with bottom fishing tackle, either conventional rods and reels or electric reels. I bring along my trusty Kristal 601 Special while some friends use Electra-Mates mounted on Penn 114 Special Senators. There are certainly other choices. If you go conventional, use a large enough reel or one with a speedy enough gear ratio to make picking up all that line an easier chore. The line of choice is super braid for sensitivity. The stretch in monofilament means you can barely feel a fish hit, while braid telegraphs even the subtlest nibble to the rod like a message from Western

The rigs we use consist of 12/0 large circle hooks with two to five on dropper loops crafted from heavy, stiff monofilament. All the dropper loops are stacked above the sinker at the very bottom of the rig. The jury is still out on whether deep drop lights help or not for these fish as we get hits on rigs with and without them. They aren’t so deep that it is totally dark down there during daylight hours. Tilefish have a varied diet so the baits you use can vary, too. We fished a mix of surf clams, mackerel fillets, squid, and chunks of other oily fish like bluefish or herring. You could even try shrimp and lobster, but not if I’m on board because I’ll be cooking up a pot of bait in the galley before you get a chance to put it on your hook. When you locate a colony chances are you will catch the largest fish first since they are the more aggres-
sive than the smaller ones. On one trip with friends out of Cape May aboard the Clean Sweep, a friend’s triple-powered 36 Contender, we really started figuring out the right places to fish and located a couple new spots we had not fished before. With five anglers aboard we caught about 50 tilefish, but not all goldens. There were a lot of gray tilefish, also called blueline tilefish (Caulolatilus microps), mixed in and the further south you fish, especially of Virginia and the Carolinas, the more bluelines you will encounter. Bluelines don’t get as large as goldens and, in fact, we caught one that weighed 15 lb. 5 oz. and would have broken the current world record of 10 lb. 9 oz. if it hadn’t hit on one of the electric reels. Electric reel catches do not qualify for IGFA record status. Funny thing is gray tilefish are not even remotely related to goldens, but they certainly taste just as good. Both species are a culinary delight! Few fish I’ve tasted compare with the delicate flavor and snow white, firm, lobster-like consistency. Steamed, baked or sautéed you can’t go wrong and once you try it I’m sure you’ll agree. Vacuumed packed you can freeze tilefish for long periods and it retains its delicate flavor and consistency. Sort of makes me hungry just thinking about it so I think I’ll pop downstairs to the freezer and thaw some out for dinner this evening. And no, I don’t have enough for everyone so you’ll just have to go catch your own! ■

Catching an SKA tournament winning king mackerel requires a lot of hard work and fishing skills. Knowing how to prepare and cook your catch requires certain skills too!
Many
king mackerel fishermen prefer to eat their fish the same day they are caught. Fish are never frozen, while only enough fish are kept during their day of fishing that can be eaten within a few hours, or the next day. Taken up the occupation of a fishing charter captain for the past 30-years, I have the luxury of being able to eat freshly caught fish just about anytime I wish. Unfortunately some fishermen do not enjoy eating their catch, they just like to catch them! While in many cases, the fisherman may have tasted a bad piece of fish several fishing seasons ago and has etched in their mind that all fish taste bad. If you get a bad oyster in your mouth, it’s the worst taste imaginable. Don’t continue to eat the bad oyster, thinking the taste will go away, spit it out. The same with eating a piece of bad fish, don’t eat it! Mary and me were once eating in a well recommended Key West seafood restaurant where the special of the day was fresh red snapper. Naturally Mary ordered her typical steak and I ordered the grilled snapper. Once the waitress had placed my plate of grilled red snapper on our table, I immediately began to detect that the snapper was not fresh by the smell. My first taste of the snapper was simply terrible, so I called the waitress and explained to her that the fish was not fresh. She went back into the kitchen to discuss the problem with the cook and soon returned. “The cook said that the snapper is fresh and that it was just delivered to our restaurant today”, the waitress remarked. I then replied, “I don’t disagree that the fish wasn’t delivered to you earlier today. The problem is, the 12
snapper wasn’t caught today and probably within the last few weeks!” With this in mind, king mackerel is best when eaten ultra fresh. While some fishermen freeze their king mackerel fillets in vacuum freezer bags and eat the mackerel within the next few months. Most seafood lovers prefer eating their king mackerel within a few days after being caught. King mackerel are an oily fish, have a grayish meat and a large bloodline, both make good sense why mackerel loses its flavor when it is frozen, or not eaten within a few days of being caught.
The larger king mackerel, 15-50 pounds have a stronger taste, while king mackerel weighing less than 15-pounds offer excellent eating. So if you have a choice when fishing in a massive school of king mackerel, keep the smaller ones for eating and let the larger ones go. I also recommend taking the time to bleed your king mackerel while the mackerel is still in the water. Take a long bladed fillet knife and slit the mackerel just behind the gill, on either side of the fish. While holding the mackerel in the water, the blood will pump out of the meat and into the water, leaving the meat a white color and

blood free. Next, slit the mackerel’s belly and remove all of the stomach organs. Finally place the king mackerel in a fish bag which is halfway full of semi melted ice. The slurry of ice will keep your king mackerel ultra fresh. A major mistake many saltwater fishermen make, is placing their fish in a large cooler that has just a couple of bags of ice on the bottom. Fish placed on top of the ice, begin to deteriorate with the lack of proper care. There are two popular ways to clean king mackerel, which in both cases, requires a sharp, long bladed ANGLER | March 2009
fillet knife. If you are a charter captain like myself, it always impresses your customers when using a high quality fillet knife and having a sharpening stone on hand. Before cleaning your king mackerel, sharpen the blade of your fillet knife and wipe the blade with a clean cloth. A clean, sharp fillet knife is a good beginning to enjoying your king mackerel seafood dinner. Always wear a fish-cleaning glove on the hand that you are holding the fish with. This will avoid any mistakes made by the hand holding the knife! King mackerel can be cut up into steaks or, filleted. To fillet the mackerel first make a cut just behind the top of the head with the mack-
erel belly down on the cleaning table. Continue to make the cut back towards the tail of the mackerel while keeping the knife blade close to spine bones of the fish. Which not only provides for the ultimate fish dinner, but atmosphere too!
Once you have reached the back portion of the rib cage, slide your knife just behind the rib cage and cut the remaining fish fillet from the mackerel. Next, place your knife just behind the gill of the king mackerel and while cutting back towards the tail, cut through the rib cage and remove the entire fillet from the mackerel. Lay the entire fillet skin down on the cleaning table and cut the bloodline and ribcage out of the mackerel. Whether you choose to grill, fry, blacken or bake your king mackerel, the bloodline is a seasoning you don’t wish to use! If the king mackerel fillet is fairly large, you may wish to cut the fillet into appropriate proportions, while leaving the skin on for grilling. Fish lovers also prefer to cut their king mackerel into steaks. Here a large “Butcher’s” knife is preferred that has a sharp, sturdy blade. Once again the mackerel is placed belly down on the cleaning table where the cut is made from the back to the belly of the fish into 1-inch steaks. Another critical mistake that I often see fishermen making, is piling their king mackerel up on the cleaning table where they begin to spoil with the hot summer weather. Leave your mackerel in the fish bag, or cooler and clean them one at a time. Once a king mackerel is cleaned, wash the fillet with clean water and place in a freezer bag with ice. By far king mackerel are best when grilled. Place the entire fillet of king mackerel (skin on) in a bag, with plenty of Zesty Italian salad dressing added. Marinate the mackerel for at least 45-minutes before grilling. Preheat the grill to a medium temperature. Place a large piece of aluminum foil on the grill March 2009 | ANGLER

so that the skin of the mackerel will not stick to the grill. The marinated mackerel fillet is then placed on the aluminum foil and seasoned with seasoning salts. Slices of lemon are also placed on top of mackerel fillet and the lid is then closed. Grill the mackerel from 15-20 minutes, or until the meat is white in color when the fillet is separated with a fork. Remove the entire mackerel and aluminum off from the grill and cut the fish into appropriate proportions. Umm-umm good! Small chunks of freshly caught king mackerel offers excellent eating when deep fried in hot peanut oil as well. Place the small chunks of mackerel in a bag with flour, salt and pepper added, then shake. Place the chunks of mackerel in the hot peanut oil and fry until golden brown. For those who prefer a more heavily battered fried fish, mix one egg and one cup of milk in a bowl. Place the chunks of king mackerel into the bowl and stir until they are completely coated with the milk and egg mixture. Next place the chunks of mackerel in a bag of flour, with salt and pepper added, then shake. Here, it is very important to heat peanut oil to a high temperature
before placing the mackerel into the oil. To make sure the oil is hot enough, first drop a small piece of fish into the oil. If the fish begins to snap, crackle and pop, the oil is hot enough! Fry the mackerel until the chunks of fish are browned and begin to float on the top. Place the pieces of fried mackerel on paper towels allowing the access oil to drain off from the fried fish. Eat hot and enjoy! Fish lovers must also be aware of the dangers of eating fish that contain mercury. While king mackerel have a relatively small stomach, they are constantly eating a variety of finfish that possibly have high levels of mercury. Mercury is carried by winds containing emissions by polluters, such as coal fired power plants and believed to be in fresh and saltwater waterways. Be sure and check on the portions of king mackerel that are safe to eat that are recommended where you live and fish. Obviously the smaller king mackerel measuring less than 30-inches, are safer to eat than the larger kings. Finally, if you wish to purchase your king mackerel from a local

seafood market, take a close look at the eyes and make sure that they are clear. Glazed kingfish eyes are a sure sign that the mackerel is not fresh.
Smell the fillet and if it has a fishy smell, it is not fresh as well. Fresh fish does not have a fish smell! ■

First,
you could bring up all the reasons why you would never put radar on your boat. It’s too expensive, too big, draws too much current, and you only take the boat out during the day, anyway. However, since a new, small radome can be added to a networked navigation screen for about the same cost as a couple full tanks of your boat’s fuel, it’s not too expensive. Many of the radar antennas introduced in the last year weigh less than a gallon of that gas. March 2009 | ANGLER
Now the brand new type of broadband radar, just introduced at Navico, uses less electricity than one of your running light bulbs. That brings us to that last point about only going boating during the daytime. Without radar or an infra-red camera, you are missing half of the time you could be using for fishing, heading out to sea to get started at dawn, moving your boat somewhere overnight, or just partying offshore while enjoying the view of the lights on the beach. Fog is another issue. Radar cuts through fog. Infra-red cameras
see through some kinds of fog, and night-vision cameras with the green look to them don’t help at all in fog. How many times have you had to wait for fog to burn off before you could leave the dock? Radar would have saved those mornings. Maybe you run at night or in the fog and just hope for the best. Radar could make things a lot more comfortable and a lot less stressful. GARMIN You can add the 4kW GMR 18 to

your Garmin network for under $1,000. That 4kW figure indicates that you get double the power of many small radar systems. The power rating is not the amount of draw on your batteries, since the pulse is only transmitted for a small fraction of a second. For a couple hundred more dollars, Garmin can provide a slimmer antenna and the latest in digital signal processing for a sharper picture with less interference and clutter. Garmin uses “HD” in the radar part number to indicate the digital signal processing. 15
Long range radar is for seeing a ship out on the ocean from 15 miles so two ships can avoid a collision in a reasonable amount of time. Those ships are not going to be near the beach where you are looking for kingfish, and you can maneuver fast enough to avoid anything you see within a mile of you. The longer ranges can also be used to confirm the navigation targets on your chart plotter. Either by overlaying the radar signal on the charts, or by using the radar rings to confirm the distance to marks and land, you can pinpoint your position with on a radar screen.

MOUNTS Another common objection to radar was the secondary costs of mounting the radar antenna so it would not interfere with other antennas or block the running lights. The angle of the t-top or arch sometimes has to be adjusted to make up for the boat’s running “attitude” which is usually bow-up compared to the resting position at the dock. A simple wedge cut from plastic makes up for this angle problem, or adjustable pedestals are available for a couple hundred dollars. The radar needs to be level when you are using it, because it transmits only in a very narrow beam with no upward or downward view. Pedestals to raise the radar and adjust for running angle at the same time have come down in price, along with mass production. Around $250 to $300 will get you a radar pedestal with an anchor light on it. As your antenna farm grows on top of your boat, you do have to worry about the highpowered signal from the radar interfering with your cell antenna, TV antenna, GPS, etc. Mounting pedestals can help with those clearance issues, or if the new broadband radar is your choice, its low transmit power will not interfere with other sensitive antenna reception. NAVICO BROADBAND Broadband radar is a radically different approach to radar. It is not 16
just a low-powered version of a traditional radar for small boats. The low power and low battery drain are just side benefits. The major advantage is the very high resolution at short ranges and the targets as small as nearby pilings that you will pick up. These would be filtered out or mixed with clutter on a traditional radar system. If an SKA boat is most concerned about short range targets and low current draw, then this radar is more suitable for you. We are speaking of finding your way on a small boat leaving a marina before dawn and finding the way out to the inlet. Broadband radar has a range of up to 24 miles, but the difference in images seen is in the short ranges, down to 1⁄32 of a mile.
DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING Perhaps you want the longer range of a traditional radar. There are improvements being made to the design of Furuno, Raymarine, Garmin and others, mostly in their switch to Digital Signal Processing. It is the same as the move from analog to digital that happened when cassette tapes went to CDs, and what is going on now in broadcast TV as it moves to digital. Clutter and interference is going away. The picture moves

more smoothly as the boat turns. Another feature in the new radar displays is the ability to see a split screen with a short range on one side and a long range picture on the other side. Automatic gain and tuning controls have made radar far more reliable in that the older radar displays had to be fine tuned by coordinating four different adjustment knobs. Then if you tuned out too much clutter, you also could tune out the targets that you wanted to see. These automatic adjustments are simple now that the digital signals can be manipulated so easily and quickly for you. INFRA-RED CAMERAS Running at night is not just about radar any more. In many situations, a camera that can see in the dark may be easier for you to use. Rather than interpreting the radar images, you see images that resemble things that you normally look at. A few new models of infra-red cameras will be introduced in the Spring of 2009,
but the price has not come down much below the $10,000 list price. However, there is no denying the confidence and comfort you will get from having a FLIR camera on your boat at night. There are entry-level models in the $5,000 range but they do not have the pan and tilt mechanisms. Once you have one of these cameras, you will wonder how you got around in the darkness without it, and you will want the version with all the features. If your budget keeps these radar and camera purchases out of reach, at least be careful out there at night. Slow down, for my sake, too. ■

f you were to check Andre Moore’s bank account on Monday, the day after the opening event of the Yamaha Professional Kingfish Tour, you would find an extra $40,000 just deposited. Andre, his wife Kim Bain Moore, Greg Watts, and Glyn Austin won the event on Sunday with a spectacular 55.35 which was the biggest king scaled this weekend. That king coupled with the 36.68 caught on Saturday gave the Crikey team, fishing an Evinrude powered Invincible, a two fish aggregate of 92.03, nearly ten pounds better than the second place team. “A week ago I didn’t even have a team put together,” said the popular bass fishing professional. “We made it happen and look at us now.” The team also won the piggyback event, the Key West Harbour Tournament, which awarded them a new 21’ Yamaha

powered Contender boat complete with a Continental Trailer, valued at $40,000. “We fished both days at the Critter,” said Andre referring to a popular spot west of Key West. On day one the team weighed
their smaller fish, a 36.68 they caught on a rainbow runner. Back they went to the same area on day two. “The blue runners we had were just too big,” Moore went on to explain. They received a dozen smaller baits from another

team. “The tide had just changed and I noticed a good piece of bottom on the depth recorder and told Greg to drop a bait deep,” Moore added. “It worked!” He saw the fish early in the fight and knew she was a good fish. When she hit the deck everyone was in awe. This was the biggest king the team had ever seen let alone catch. “I’ve heard about the giants in Key West, now I’ve caught one,” Andre added. Kim Bain Moore was the event’s Top Lady Angler. The Yamaha Professional Kingfish Tour is made up of five events. Stops include Key West and Jensen Beach in Florida, Fourchon, Louisiana, St. Simons Island, Georgia, and the final in Little River, South Carolina. It is perceived by the participants that you need big fish in the first three events and replace your drop fish in the remaining two. It’s the toughest test of skill in our sport. The Weathers, Greg and Jeff, fished at the Tail End Buoy area. Fishing their Yamaha powered Contender, Triple Gobble, they caught a 46.93 on day one. “It was about eleven o’clock, at the tide change when the bite turned on,” said Greg. “She hit a goggle eye on the surface. Jeff got her to the boat and we knew we were in the race. It certainly made our day.” Back to the same spot on Sunday, the bite turned on an hour later. “We knew we needed a half way decent fish and we got a 35.83 I caught on a blue runner. We really needed a bigger king to win the event but when you look at the overall picture this one was just fine.” The 82.76 aggregate was enough for second place and the $11,000 prize. “We’ve been in the chase every year for the “Angler of the Year” title but we have always started out slow in Key West and had to make up ground to catch up,” Greg added. “This is really the best start we’ve ever had. Ron Mitchell, got off to a rousing start on his Suzuki powered Contender, Bandit. Ron came back to the series this year with a lot of Pro talent. First, long time fishing partner Will Geraghty came back. Then he added Carl Carder who fished his own boat last year, “C Crazy.” David and Brad Butler round out the team. They fished Season Ticket last season. That’s horsepower! The team fished the Banana Bar and kept working the reef line. They scaled a 34.42 on day one however they showed me a king

bitten in two by a shark that would have gone into the mid to high 40s. “It was a tough break,” said Ron but when you fish here you always have that problem. “We had her under the boat but felt when the shark hit.” On day two they brought a 46.84 to the boat at noon caught on a tinker mackerel. “We called Jim S. in on the bite and he caught a 44.” The Bandit team ended with 81.26 points, good for third place and the $10,000 paycheck. The Conched Out team elected to join the tour this year and proved
their team was up to the task. Corey and Ryan McBride, Greg and Chase Haskin, and David Kalik ran 40 miles south and fished in 100 feet of water on their Mercury powered Conch. “We fished the same place as last year where we caught our 50,” said Corey. “Ryan got a 34.11 on day one to scale using a blue runner.” On day two they were within two miles of where they fished on Saturday. “The water temperature was 70 degrees,” Corey continued to explain. “We had a tinker mackerel out and it’s the one our 41.81

hit at 11:30. David was on the rod and didn’t take long to get her to the boat.” The team’s 75.92 aggregate won the $6,000 for fourth place. Chase Haskin was the event’s Top Junior Angler. Corey wanted to thank Mercury Outboards, Total Marine in Davie, Florida, and Accurate Reels for all their help. Conrad Lau and Dell Williamson’s team, Koolau, earned fifth. With Rad Lau, Rocky Cusack, and Gill Strelec on board, the team could also be found at the
INVINCIBLE BREAKS 80 MPH! Alex Lipworth, the driving force behind Invincible Boats, came to Key West to fish the Key West Harbour Tournament as he did last year. The new Mercury Verado Racing Motors were fitted on Alex’s personal 36’ Invincible. The boat, at the start of the day one Bimini start, ran 80 plus miles per hour in two- to three-foot seas. “I knew it was going to be fast with the Verados,” said Lipworth. “Our vacuum bagged, vented hull, built for strength, speed, and durability, coupled with Mercury’s rac-
ing motors will be a plus for any tournament fisherman looking for ultimate performance. However, at cruising speeds, fuel economy is superb. He went on to tell SKA management, “I wish I could have fished the whole tournament but I’ll see you at the next one.” Alex had been suffering with the flu all week and still had not recovered enough to fish the entire weekend. “The last thing I wanted to do is give this to one of my friends fishing the tournament.” ■ The Irvines, Lance, Max, and Houston, plus Harrison Smith, picked up sixth on the Young Guns.

Tail End Buoy area on day one. “We started just east of the area on Saturday,” explained Conrad. “But we just couldn’t find the good fish we needed and had to settle for a 23.74 on the scale as day one ended. The second day was much different. “We were really hoping she would go 50 but she ended up going 49.85,” he went on. “But what was sad is that we had caught a 43-pound king earlier that day. That king on day one could have made the race very close for the top slot.” The one thing that Conrad does

that most don’t is fly a kite rig. “It’s a lot of work keeping them adjusted but I find it pays off.” The team ended up in fifth place with a 73.59 aggregate and Conrad earned the Senior Angler award for the event. Lance Irvine showed up in Key West to fish the Pros in a rebuilt Fountain boat he worked all last year on. It was a magnificent job, the boat looking and running great with Mercury power. With Lance were Max and Houston Irvine, and Harrison Smith. The team caught a 33.87 on

Team Donzi already has one “National Championship” title under their belt (2000) and would like to add the “Angler of the Year” title to their resume. to pick up seventh place honors. Another great start for this very experienced team. Dan, Travis, Lucas, and Laurie Crowley, plus Lewis Rogers, and Muller Otto earned 69.31 points fishing the Posse, a Mercury powered Yellowfin. They scaled a 36.51 on the first day and ended with a 32.80 for a 69.31 aggregate. This is one team I will keep my eye on. They finished thirteenth last year and should finish up much higher this year if not win it all. Last year’s eleventh place finisher is now also on the prowl. Kevin

Most teams reported two to three foot seas going west to their destination and seas three to five foot outside the reef line. ■

This is a special tour of five events held in prime locations from the Carolinas to Louisiana. It is the toughest test of team skills in any fishing contest in the world. Not only do these highly skilled contestants have to fish in unfamiliar waters but in all types of sea conditions. They are allowed to weigh one fish per team per day, total of ten if they weighed a fish each day in the five events. The SKA tabulates the team’s best seven fish and the winner, the team www.FishSKA.com
with the best aggregate, is crowned “Top Angler of the Year,” sport fishing’s most coveted title. The tour is named after its title sponsor, Yamaha. The Yamaha Professional Kingfish Tour will host most Captain’s Meetings on Thursday nights with tournament fishing on Friday and Saturday. he Key West Harbour Tournament, formerly the Hog’s Breath Tournament, drew 129 teams this year and many were not disappointed. A cold front which ended Thursday and calmed the seas thus enabling one out of every five teams to scale five kings in the 50s and 23 more in the 40s. 44

The biggest of the weekend, a 55.35 caught on day two of the event, belonged to Crikey. Andre and Kim Bain Moore, Greg Watts, and Glyn Austin, fishing an Evinrude powered Invincible, scaled a 36.68 on day one of the event but knew that wasn’t going to even make the top 15 payoff spots. The Moores didn’t even know they were going to fish SKA this year because of their hectic schedule on the bass tour plus a week before Key West Andre still didn’t have a team put together. Andre is a successful professional bass fisherman fishing the BASS & FLW Tours while his Australian born wife Kim fishes the ladies Bassmaster Tour. She won the top title this year and earned a berth in
the all male dominated Bassmaster Classic in February. She is the first woman to ever accomplish this feat. Greg Watts is a star on the Redfish circuit. At the end of day one, the Twin Vee team had a 54.02 on the scale and the lead in the tournament. “It’s tough to lose the event on day two,” said Captain Charles Chandler. “But a 54 to start the season still works just fine.” Charles went on to explain, “We were on our way to the Critter when our steering messed up so we stopped at the Banana Bar, about 35 miles from Key West.” The water looked good to the team, Paul Langel, David Faircloth, and Rick Baruta. The water temp gauge read 70.8 to 71.2 degrees,

perfect for king mackerel. “Our first bait in the water, a long lined blue runner, got hit,” Chandler added. “Dave picked up the rod and by 8:30 we had her within range of Paul’s gaff. She had made two long runs then circled under the boat.” The team had a Contender next to them so they eased the smoker over the gunwale and did away with the usual high fives and shouts of elation. “We didn’t want anyone to know where she came from,” Chandler added. “We did tell Ron Mitchell who went there on Sunday.” Chandler did think it was ironic that on Sunday morning they needed a downrigger ball and asked Andre (Crikey) if he had a spare, ANGLER | March 2009

which he graciously gave to them. This was not the first time the Twin Vee team has caught a 50 in Key West. Chandler fishes a Suzuki powered Twin Vee. It was wonderful to see Team Salt Rock earn third place with a great 53.12. We have watched Frank Chivas’ sons, Cody and Kyle, grow up in our sport. Now they’re finding leaderboards all over the southeast and garnering lots of press in their wake. They fish the Redfish Tour and the Tarpon Tour. “We wanted to fish the SKA Pro Tour but the schedule didn’t work,” said Cody. Both are in college and according to dad, getting excellent grades. Had they entered the Pros, they would have finished second with an aggregate score of 85.89. Along with Rob Campbell, they caught their fish on day two after weighing a 32.77 on day one. Their home waters are off Florida’s west coast and fish a Suzuki powered Yellowfin. Bar Fly, a Yamaha powered Contender, was fourth with a 51.91 also caught on Sunday. Billy Green, Ken Harris, Andy Glynn, CJ McLaughlin, and John Danduono, worked the Tail End Buoy area both days. “This is an area we’re familiar with and it has been good to us,” explained Green. They had only a 22-pound king to show for their efforts on day one but had all the confidence in the area so went back there on day two. “We were fishing in 75 feet of water,” said Green. “She hit a long lined blue runner at 9:15. C.J. worked the fish and as she came in the boat we thought she would go 50.” Ken Harris, a very well respect-

ed guide in the Florida Keys has seen bigger kings but after fishing this event from its inception 13 years ago he knew it was a payday fish. Neil Nix, Eric Kindell, and John Crane, earned fifth in the event and caught the fifth and final king mackerel in the 50-pound range. “The Tail End Buoy has always been good to us,” said Nix. “On day one we had only caught one small king before noon but as the tide changed the bite turned on. Eric was ready when our 50.19 ate a blue runner on the surface. We knew she was a good fish and took no chances. We were elated when she came in the boat knowing we had a great season opening king.” The team fishes a Yamaha powered Wellcraft. The 13th annual event was moved from Murray Marine to the new Key West Harbour Marina. Of all the marinas we’ve been in over the past years, this is by far the best. In fact it’s big enough to
house the Nationals, everyone at one marina. However, there are just no fish in Key West at that time of year. The staff at the marina went out of their way to help the fishermen and us. They also have a clubhouse, which has a superb restaurant. It certainly made for a very successful event! In sixth place was the Keri-NOn / Koolau team with a 49.85 caught on day two. Gill Strelec, Jr., Jason Naumann, Conrad Lau, Dell Williamson, Rocky Cusack, and Rad Lau make up the team. Conrad was the event’s Top Senior Angler. The Weathers, Jeff and Greg, picked up seventh place thanks to a nice 46.93. They fish the Triple Gobble, a Yamaha powered Contender. Chalk up eighth to Ron Mitchell’s Bandit team. Ron combined the talents of former Pro participants to make an incredible team including Will Geraghty, Carl Carder, and David and Brad Butler.
Charles Chandler’s Twin V team earned second with this 54.02. With Chandler was Paul Langel, David Faircloth, and Rick Baruta. Team Salt Rock nailed this 53.12 for third place. Cody and Kyle Chivas and Rob Campbell.

The Suzuki powered Contender team weighed a 46.84 caught by Brad on day two, improving on a 34.42 caught on day one. Ken and Dan Upton, Jack Wood, David Heavenridge, and Matt Davis got the season off with a bang with a nice 46.73 fishing Team Donzi. This impressive trio of Wood and Uptons has been winning for years, even capturing the National Championship in 2000. Wood won the title also in ’93. Their ninth place finish gives them a lot of confidence going into ’09. Now look at the scores between seventh and tenth place. Less than one and a quarter pound separate the places. That’s very interesting, a 46.93, 46.84, 46.73, and a 46.71. You think it’s not important to handle your fish carefully? The final weight, the 46.71 came from Mike McDuffie’s Black Gold. Mike, Don Williamson, Jordan Williamson, Lawrence Bullard, and Karl Mrozek fished a Yamaha powered Hydra Sports. The Knot Me team, Brian and Bill Hasson, Randy Keys, and Luis Urbay, may be the best Class boat fishing today in Florida. Once again they won another event, this time Key West Harbour’s Class of 23 with a 46.90. That’s a $3,000 king mackerel! The Class of 23 was sponsored by ProMarineUSA.com who is also a Corporate Partner of the SKA. Chase Haskin who fished the Conched Out was the event’s Top Junior Angler after scaling a 41.81 plus he also won the Mercury Scholarship $500 award. Ryan Johnson from the All In was second and Devon Ellis from Easy Drinkin was third in the Junior Category. Fred Piper Sucumbs to Heart Attack! Fred Wesley Piper, a charter member of the Southern Kingfish Association (member number 164) died on Monday, January 30th from complications to a heart attack he suffered the previous Thursday. He was 67 and lived in Raleigh, North Carolina. Fred was certainly a great competitor winning his share of events in North Carolina on his boat Sandpiper. Fred successfully owned and operated Piper’s Automotive since 1956. Fred loved the outdoors and fished with his son, Dane. He was instrumental in the formation of the SKA in North Carolina and was one of those guys March 2009 | ANGLER
you could bounce ideas off of and know you’d get an intelligent answer. The fishing community has lost a great ally, friend, and competitor. Fred was survived by his wife Laura, son Dane, daughter, Pam Piper Kirby, sister, Joanne Piper Soileau, brother Jimmy Piper, plus numerous grandchildren.
