Greetings in Jesus! With a new year comes new changes for not only me and my family but also for The Fit Christian magazine. We have had to make changes, just slight, to the layout in order to adapt better to printing, including lightening the page count in rder to make the print costs lower for those who prefer a printed copy. And with the new layout, some new design changes were implemented. We are tweaking things a little here and there as we go. To come are even more changes to the Web site, to the electronic format of the magazine, upcoming radio programming, and we even have apps in the making so you can take The FC mobile! And we are going back to bi-monthly issues instead of quarterly. It’s going to be a great year!

Happy Reading! Well things on the home front have been eventful since the last issue went out–traveling from Alaska to Washington, Arizona and New Mexico then back to Alaska; dealing with strep-throat and pneumonia (at the same time); packing and purging (mainly purging 10 years worth of “stuff”); saying goodbye to friends and family; then moving from Alaska to Florida. Yes, from one extreme in temperature to another–what is God thinking? With all that going on, I had to forego the winter issue, but I am happy to be settled in our new location and getting back to work. My eldest son Joshua, youngest son Chris and I all arrived in Key West, Florida one week before Christmas. It has been a dramatic but absolutely fantastic change. I have been wanting to work full-time in ministry for a few years now and get the training I need to run my own someday, and viola! God has opened the doors to answered prayers in ways that I never imagined. I am so grateful. It is such a blessing to be here with my boys (two of them anyway) and my fur babies. It is a blessing to walk out into sunshine every day instead of rain. My Vitamin D level is going up already–I can feel it! I’m looking toward to a brighter year (pun intended!).

hen it comes to health, making positive lifestyle changes is a goal for many people. But often times no matter how good the intentions, these changes only last a few weeks. Maintaining a healthy weight and staying active can help lower risk for developing a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes. Losing even 10 to 15 pounds - if you weigh 200 pounds can make a big difference in helping you prevent type 2 diabetes. If you have diabetes, these same changes can help keep your blood glucose and blood pressure on target to reduce your risk for diabetes complications. The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) wants all Americans to know that learning how to make these positive lifestyle changes begins with making a plan to achieve your goals. When it comes to better health, making lifestyle changes can be a family affair. For example, half an hour of moderate physical activity could be a fun hike with the kids.

When Megan Webber downloaded family photos off her digital camera, she found the usual problems that need touching up some were too dark, some were a little grainy, and some needed a little redeye removal. Some of the pictures of her 5-year-old son, Benjamin, had a golden glow in his left eye.
Clues to childhood eye diseases could be hiding in plain sight
"Benjamin has always had a freckle in his left eye," said Megan, "so I thought the flash was just a difference due to the coloring of his eye and ignored it - I even did red-eye correction to remove it from photos." But when her sister noticed that same glow in some family vacation pictures she had taken, she gave Megan a concerned call. "She said it was probably nothing. But she had seen on a television show that this could be a sign of a tumor in the eye and recommended I have him seen," said Megan. Benjamin's pediatrician didn't find anything, but he sent them to a specialist who urged them to come in right away. They were stunned to learn he was legally blind in his left eye. "He'd never bumped into walls or rubbed his eyes - he'd even just passed the paddle eye test in the doctor's office," said Megan. "His left eye could not see a letter E the size of a full computer screen eight feet away."
Benjamin wears a patch one hour a day to help strengthen his eye.
Scans of his eye showed a white mass, which had been causing the reflection in the photograph. After testing and a tense few days, they discovered that Benjamin had Coats' Disease, a life-

There are also Medicare Supplement plans, which are designed as an alternative to Part C to fill gaps in Parts A and B. v Generally speaking, Part A covers in-patient hospitalization while Part B covers outpatient services and other medical care. v Part C denotes the "Medicare Advantage" program where private insurance companies deliver Medicare Part A, Part B and in most cases - Part D benefits to plan enrollees. v Part D is the Medicare prescription drug benefit that provides insurance coverage for medications. v Your circumstances determine when you can enroll in or change Part D and C plans. Winter Winners Winter is a great time to think about getting or staying in shape. This is a series of games that can be played in a gym and the focus is on Winter fun! So instead of grabbing for the fruitcake try some fitness fun!
Warm-ups and Cool Down Roll and Say Hello! Materials: Ball Children take turns greeting each other by rolling a ball. One child takes the ball and says Hello (child’s name) says something that they like about winter/ Christmas and then roll the ball to another child in the circle. The catcher then says good morning to someone else and rolls the ball to him. Make sure that everyone has had a turn. Ask which children have not had a turn by putting their thumb up. The game is completed when everyone has had a turn. Winter Cross Country Limbo Materials: Stick such a pool noodle Have the teacher hold the stick at a comfortable height about waist high. Ask children to line up one side and find a way to under the stick without bumping it. Each time through, lower the stick a bit. Children will have a find a way to get low and go under.

Red Snowflake, Green Snowflake, Brown Snowflake, Yellow Snowflake
Hunt the Snowflake Materials: snowflake The players form a circle on the floor and one person is chosen to be “IT.” “IT” is in the middle of the circle and closes his eyes until the game begins. The other players pass a snowflake or another small object back and forth in the circle behind their backs. The object of the game is to have “IT” find out who has the snowflake. If the guess is right, the person with the snowflake becomes “IT.” This game teaches children to be quick, agile, and aware of their surroundings.
Two lines are established at opposite ends of the playing area. One line is the goal line; the other is the starting line. One player is "“IT”" and stands on the goal line and closes his eyes. When he calls “green snowflake,” players move toward him. When he calls "red snowflake," he opens his eyes and all of the players must stop moving. Yellow snowflake means walk slow and brown means sprint. Any player who is caught in motion must return to the starting line. Players can continue moving if any color other than "red snowflake" is called. The suspense of the game occurs as the players wonder what color will be called and if they are free to move. The first player to

Snowman, May I? This is similar to Mother May I? There is a goal line and a starting line, and the player who is "Snowman" stands at the goal line. The "Snowman" addresses one player at a time to "Take one giant step" or "Take 5 baby steps" or "Skip three steps,” etc. That player must remember to say, "Snowman, May I?" and wait for permission before he can advance. If the player forgets to ask permission first, he must return to the starting line. The Snowman then addresses another player on the line and continues until one player finally reaches the goal line. That player then becomes the "Snowman.” Listening and following directions is important in this game. Drop the Snowflake Materials: Snowflake One player is designated “IT” and gets the handkerchief. The other players form a circle by holding hands. “IT” walks slowly around the outside of the circle and puts the snowflake behind one person. The person must chase “IT” and try to tag him before “IT” runs around the circle once and gets back to the person’s place. Alertness and using direction are great skills taught in this game.
Active Games Snowflake Collection Day Materials: hula-hoop and leaves and newspapers Put a hula-hoop in each corner of your play area. Have equal numbers of Snowflakes in each hula-hoop. Divide the kids into teams. Each team stands by 'their' hula-hoop. This is their yard! Instruct them to begin to throw their snowflakes in the other members’ yard. Each group has to empty their hula-hoop by carrying the snowflakes one per trip to another team's yard (hula-hoop). The snowflakes have to be put into the other team's yard. Tossing is acceptable if the beanbag lands in the hoop, if not they have to retrieve it from the fallen area and put it in the hula-hoop. Make sure team members watch where they are going, to avoid accidents running into the other team. Count the number of snowflakes in each hoop at the end of the game. The team with the fewest snowflakes wins. Snowman Tag “Snowman” chases players within a certain area. Tagged players are “frozen” but can be unfrozen if tagged by a free player. The game ends when all players are frozen. The last one frozen becomes “Snowman” for the next round.
Snowflake Toss Materials: Plastic leaves or plastic eggs Students are lined up opposite one another in teams of two partners each. The partners stand about 5-10 feet apart depending on tossing skills. One plastic snowflake or plastic egg is provided per team. Students toss the snowflake back and forth, trying not to drop it. After each successful catch, the students take one step back, creating a greater challenge. Each time the leaves drops, they move one step closer. The team that successfully throws the snowflake the farthest wins. Green Egg Balance Materials: Spoon and plastic egg for each team Students are lined up in single file. The first student is given a plastic green egg which he or she will balance on a spoon. A cone is placed approximately 10 feet away from the front of the line. The student places the green egg on the spoon and tries to balance it while running to the cone and back. When the student returns to the line, he/she gives the spoon and green egg to the next person in line and returns to the end of the line. The team that finishes first wins. Snowman in the Middle A student is chosen to play the Snowman. He sits on a stool. The other players move around the Snowman and tell him he cannot catch them. The Snowman tries to catch them without leaving his stool. The first one tagged is the next Snowman. This game also teaches alertness, agility, and self-control. Snowman Says One player is the leader and orders the other players to make motions such as "Snowman says, thumbs up" or "Snowman says, hands on your head.” The leader also makes all of these motions. If he omits "Snowman says," however, and just orders "Thumbs up," the players must not make the motion. Anyone who does so is out of the game. The winner is the player who remains in the game the longest. This game shows the importance of following and listening to specific directions.

uring the short days and cold nights of winter, many of us crave comfort foods. Unfortunately, the rich dishes we usually think of tend to be low in nutrition and packed with fat and calories. Well, take heart. It's possible to enjoy satisfying dishes that are tasty, hearty and nutritious. Dry peas, lentils and chickpeas (garbanzo beans), all part of the legume family, are one way to make comfort foods more healthful. These ingredients pack a nutritional punch while adding flavor to recipes: just one cup of dry peas, lentils or chickpeas gives you more than half the recommended daily dosage of fiber and up to 18 grams of protein. They also contain little to no fat, making them a healthy meat alternative. Chef Tracy O'Grady, from Willow Restaurant in Arlington, Va., knows how to make the most of these versatile ingredients. "You may already love lentil soup," she says.
14 | The FC Jan/Feb 2012
"But lentils have a wide range of uses, and are a great addition to hearty fare like enchiladas, veggie burgers - even chocolate cake." And while chickpeas are best known as the key ingredient in hummus, they also appear in richtasting foods like Willow's Chickpea Fries (see O'Grady's recipe). For more recipes and information from the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, visit www.pea-lentil.com.
Willow's Chickpea Fries Serves: 8 (6 per person)
2½ cups water 1 garlic clove, minced fine 2 cups whole milk 2 teaspoons kosher salt ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika 3 cups chickpea flour; reserve 1 cup for dusting 1 cup cooked chickpeas, roughly chopped 2 cups Parmesan cheese, finely grated ½ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 gallon canola oil

Tips for cooking dry peas, lentils and chickpeas § Dry peas and lentils don't require soaking. Soak dried chickpeas in cold water for 12 hours before cooking (or you can buy pre-cooked, canned chickpeas). § Spread dry peas and lentils in a single layer on a baking sheet. Check for and discard any debris. Rinse under cold water. § To cook lentils, use 1 1/2 cups of water to 1 cup of lentils. Bring water to boil and add lentils. Boil for 2 or 3 minutes and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until tender. Green or brown lentils take approximately 30 minutes and red lentils about 8 to 10 minutes. Place water, garlic, milk, salt, cayenne and paprika in a non-reactive sauce pot and heat until it boils. Lower heat to gentle simmer and whisk in chickpea flour. Whisk just until smooth and then use a high heat spatula to finish the process. Cook mixture for about 5 minutes, constantly stirring to make sure there is no scorching. Once flour is nearly cooked, fold in chopped chickpeas, Parmesan cheese and extra virgin olive oil. Stir until well incorporated and hot. This should take about 3 additional minutes. Place in a plastic wrap lined 10 x 12-inch tray. Cover with plastic wrap
and push down so it is even. Chill for at least 2 hours in the refrigerator or until completely chilled. After well chilled, turn the chickpea mold onto a cutting board. Cut fries 12 times in 1-inch pieces and then cut each strip into 4 pieces, forming 48 pieces.
Mix all dry ingredients together in one bowl. In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, melted butter, olive oil and egg yolks. In third bowl, whip egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold dry ingredients into buttermilk mixture gently (do not over mix or pancakes will be tough). Let batter stand for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, gently fold half of the egg whites into batter, then fold remaining egg whites in.
Heat canola oil in a large stainless steel fry pot to 350°F. Dust fries with remaining chickpea flour and fry in 4 batches until hot and golden brown. Drain in paper towels to remove excess oil. Winter Has Come Winter has descended, and for me, like an unwelcome guest. This boy of spring and summer can hardly wait for more sunlight, higher temperatures, new buds, leaves and flowers. And not much of a growing season either right now, at least not one to be seen. But there is hope everywhere, whether it’s a new seed catalog in the mail, and evergreen that stands out against the brown and gray of winter or a few fresh sprigs of plant life standing firm against the cold and the wind. There is hope. Many of us at this time of year are S.A.D. or bothered by Seasonal Affective Disorder, where the loss of sunlight puts us in a funk or depression. I say ‘us’ because I am effected this way. I have found ways to combat it like making sure that I take advantage of all the day light hours I can get. A long walk on the sunny side of the street, during mid day seems to help. Get out and enjoy the fresh air and the sun, if it is shining. I let it shine full face on me so I can absorb some Vitamin D. One of a number of herbs that helps with this is Kava Kava. This is a tropical plant of the South Seas that is now cultivated in many places because of its popularity as mood lifter. This flowering shrub with oblong leaves was named the intoxicating pepper by explorer Captain James Cook when he came upon it.
People use it for muscle spasms and the pain that goes with it. It is touted as a safer alternative to painkillers like aspirin and other over the counter pain meds. Some people have used it as an alternative for prescribed drugs such as Prozac and Valium. This is a powerful herb that must be used correctly so if you are considering Kava Kava, best to check with a health care provider who is very familiar with it.
You can gather your own. This is a evergreen so it is a little easier to find in the winter because its dark green leaves stand out against the dullness of winter. This is as simple of a foraging as you can get. Collect a few branches, remove the leaves, wash and then let naturally dry and within a few days you have leaves that are ready for the kitchen. You can also use the leaves for tea. Just steep them in near boiling water for ten minutes. Some people find that the tea gives a warming and calming effect.

This is also where I found myself pushed to compete in local IFBB shows, but my heart and my faith kept warning me not to enter the scene. Stay Motivated All Year with These Easy Fitness Tips In 2012,
millions of people will make a vow to lose weight or start a fitness plan, but many will lose the motivation it takes to sustain a fit and active lifestyle within just a few weeks. With the right tools and support though, finding motivation to stay fit can be a snap.

Father, New York Times Best-Selling Author, and “Extra” TV host Mario Lopez finds his motivation to stay fit using the techniques of his personal trainer, Jimmy Peña. Now, Peña wants to help people keep their fitness vows using the same techniques by offering these simple tips to maintain motivation all year long:

your exercise activities – whether you’re running or jogging a route, walking a path, biking, swimming or weight training – to push yourself a little farther each week. Grab a Partner – “You can improve exercise performance by having a partner who pushes you to your limits. But if you prefer to workout solo, the built-in audio trainer in the new MOTOACTV from Motorola can provide motivation. It’s like having a personal trainer right in your ear,” says Peña. The new device tracks fitness stats including time, distance, heart rate and even calories burned. Then, upload your workout to www.motoactv.com to analyze the performance data tracked by the device – and challenge your friends to beat your latest stats. “A little competition can be a big motivator,” explains Peña. Mix it Up – It’s important to make a fitness schedule and stick to it, but that doesn’t mean doing the same routine over and over. To stay motivated, try changing your workout. From walking to running to cycling, you can always find a new activity to challenge yourself – and you can bring MOTOACTV with you. Sweat-proof and rain-resistant, this device also features a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass display. You can wear it on your wrist, clip it to your shirt, or purchase a mount to attach it to your bike during an outdoor ride, making it easy to change up your activities to keep you interested (sold separately). Turn Up the Volume – “Music is key for most of my clients. When they’re running out of steam, the right song can help put them on track to meet their fitness goals,” says Peña. Creating playlists of different music that keeps you motivated for different types of activities can really help keep you going. Remember to refresh playlists, as you can quickly tire of the same music.
“MOTOACTV is a personal trainer and a DJ all at the same time,” says Lopez. “It tracks all the data I need – from pace, heart rate, Start Small – If you haven’t distance, miles logged, and it plays all my favorite music. Pilate's for the Soul Health advocacy groups are becoming increasingly concerned with over stimulation and high stress levels associated with lifestyles and behaviors in Americans. Other medical researchers say 85 % of Americans suffer with some sort of back pain. Rather than focus on some of the causes of these dilemmas, some of which are obvious, I want to offer a solution which has given me personal peace and relief from the discomfort of back pain. It is these dilemmas which help me appreciate the transforming peace of a spirit led Pilates class. I teach, and have taught, a variety of different fitness classes in my career, but no class compares to Pilates. Pilates is a series of stretching and strengthening exercises developed after World War II by Joseph Pilates. Pilates called his method, Contrology, which refers to the way his method, encourages the use of the mind to control the muscles. Scrawny and sickly as a youth, the photographic results of his method are astounding. Using the mind to control our muscles reminds me of the way we can meditate on God’s word and then put His Word into practice by flexing our spiritual muscles. Both take focus and discipline to reach the next level. With the mind focused on our muscles, the daily dilemmas are forgotten and the

soul can celebrate peace with God. Pilates requires concentration and focus because the body is moving through precise ranges of motion. This is when we learn to turn the dial and listen to God as He moves us from one exercise to another. The special thing about Pilates exercise is it caters to the novice and the advanced. A knowledgeable, experienced instructor will teach each person how to perform each exercise and help them feel comfortable in the class. The instructor will demonstrate modifications to gently guide the novice to the next level. Pilates also allows the freedom to perform the exercises on a mat using your own body weight, or with the aid of various props, such as a; stability ball, small weighted ball, stretch bands, Pilates circle, foam rollers and Pilates equipment. For maximum benefit you should do Pilates at least two or three times per week. Body transformation and postural improvements should be noticeable within ten to twenty sessions. I must warn you, it is habit forming. Once you start, you won’t want to stop. These sessions experiencing God opens new doors of strength and closeness to God. It is the healthy balance of physical and spiritual well being. Pilates helps us slow down and BE in communion with God. In Psalm 46:10 He tells us to “Be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Just because we live in the world doesn’t mean we must live like the world. unning is a terrific sport that defeats stress, increases energy, improves fitness, and burns calories at a high rate. One thing that you cannot cheat yourself in running gear is the type of shoes that you wear. Running with the wrong shoes accounts for 80% of injuries. Good running shoes provide the first defense against the potential of injury. Here are some tips to keep you on the road and injury free. First, you need to invest good money in a running shoe. That means that you need to be willing to spend $75.00 and up for good running shoes. You are not paying for fancy extra features but equipment that will help keep your feet free from injury. Large department sports stores take off essential equipment in a brand name shoe such as reflector tape, stability backing, and essential cushion fiber and motion control oftentimes to sell a cheaper name brand shoe. On the first fit for a shoe, go to a running specialty store. Make sure that the salesperson is a knowledgeable runner. Consultation with a running podiatrist is great help as well. Another suggestion is to try your shoes later on in the day and buy shoes that are half to one size bigger, since your feet can swell that much due to long and difficult runs. The shoes must have a comfortable first feel that will enable you to use them immediately. Your heel should fit snugly into the end of your shoe. The part of the shoe that wraps around the top of the foot should fit securely but it should not bother or press too tightly on any area of the foot. Lacing or material should in no way rub or scratch any part of the shoe. This is an indication that this is the wrong kind of shoe for you to wear. Feet at any time in the shoes should not slide in the shoe.
The Normal Foot has an arch that leaves a wet footprint but shows the forefoot and heel that is connected by a broad band. A normal foot lands on the outside of the heel and rolls inward and slightly to absorb shock. Stability shoes are good for this type of runner. A normal foot means you probably are a normal pronator.
are helpful in the shoe selection process. This will give you the best fit for your running. Be sure to be fitted with both width and size since makers of various brands have different sizes and features. Even the same brands of shoes can vary in size and fit. Some runners have commented that their feet have grown with running and some women have comment- The Flat Foot has a low arch and leaves ed that pregnancy can add a half a size to a print that looks like the whole sole of the foot. For example if you run 30 miles a week remember that you will need to replace them in 10 weeks or 2 and a half months. This is important for those who are running big races in the coming months. A marathon shoe should have more than 60-70 miles logged into them. Discussing your history and running goals can be very helpful in choosing the right shoe. Some questions include how long have you been running, what is your weekly mileage, where do you do your running, what is your weight, and current foot conditions such as flat feet, overpronation, or supination? Be sure to allow the salesclerk to watch you run to see if the shoes look like a good fit.
Running shoes should be used only for running. Cross-training shoes are fine for short runs but cause injury if you run long distances. The High-Arched Foot leaves a foot print with either a very narrow band nor no band at all between the forefoot and the heel. A curved, highly arched foot is generally supinated or underpronated. Cushioned or neutral shoes with flexibility are great for this type of runner. Running is a sport that can be enjoyed over a long lifetime. Spending time in a running store and the willingness to buy a good shoe, will keep you on the trails for life!

And every wise hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work made he them. The length of one curtain was twenty and eight cubits, and the breadth of one curtain four cubits: the curtains were all of one size. And he coupled the five curtains one unto another: and the other five curtains he coupled one unto another. And he made loops of blue on the edge of one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling: likewise he made in the uttermost side of another curtain, in the coupling of the second. Fifty loops made he in one curtain, and fifty loops made he in the edge of the curtain which was in the coupling of the second: the loops held one curtain to another. And he made fifty taches of gold, and coupled the curtains one unto another with the taches: so it became one tabernacle. And he made curtains of goats’ hair for the tent over the tabernacle: eleven curtains he made them. The length of one curtain was thirty cubits, and four cubits was the breadth of one curtain: the eleven curtains were of one size. Exodus 36:8-15 The people have delivered the materials, and now the craftsmen and women produced the parts of the tabernacle. They were produced per a detailed plan. 26 | The FC Jan/Feb 2012

Wouldn’t it be interesting to build even a small replica of this for our lesson? Perhaps in the scale for children’s lessons in Sunday School. We could even take the materials on a campout for a campfire skit. How much more will this lesson live in our memory than reading or coloring books? At least the Ark of the Covenant is a box of reasonable size:
According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel made all the work. And Moses did look upon all the work, and, behold, they had done it as the LORD had commanded, even so had they done it: and Moses blessed them. Read Exodus 37:1-9 Special Lessons With some materials from the local lumberyard, one could make an interesting tool for learning. Building the ark would be a lesson for every worker involved. We do not know exactly what type of wood the bible is referring to, but we have many available today. Hard woods come from trees with leafs, and soft woods are from pine type trees. The dark hardwoods can become a beautiful item if we are patient to work it. Someone in your church has the tools and skill to make this a great lesson.
I would submit that you may want to visit a Messianic Fellowship, a gathering of Jewish Christians to gain understanding of these ceremonies. Such a presentation can bring a lot of understanding to life. Search the web for fellowships in your area:

Again, we can build great lessons with the help of others. Invite your people to learn from the teachings of a fellowship that has an expertise you want to learn. Or invite a member of your church to teach on their skill or great interests. We are a body of many individuals who can help each other. The Physical Manifestation I have been writing to Christians who are interested in fitness. This lesson can offer some physical labor in moving lumber and later the articles of the tabernacle. A camping trip can give us physical activity, fresh air, good rest, and fellowship. This time can allow you to share your passion and fitness with others. You can gain from their knowledge and interests as well. Studies show that physical activity stimulates the mind. We are all members of the same body, and we need each other. The encouragement of the Holy Spirit comes through interaction with others who are filled with the same spirit. We have fellowship with the Holy Spirit when we have fellowship with other Christians. This is why we need to attend a church fellowship as well. The Tabernacle was a place for God to dwell among the people. Christ entered Heaven itself to pardon our sins, not the Holy place of this earthly tabernacle. We have a High Priest who is without sin, and a tabernacle for all to witness the Holy Spirit working. To Love, Honor and Obey A scripture to help you focus on your Christian life. Meditate and pray on this verse from the Bible and see how it applies to your life, or how you should apply it. Ask the Lord for revelation and understanding on the scriptures and He will grant your request. “If you love me, show it by doing what I've told you.” John 14: 15 The Message. You may have heard this scripture more often in the King James version rather than in The Message version, but The Message says it loud and clear. Here is the original: “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” John 14: 15 NKJV.
That’s a very simple directive: if you love me, obey me. What’s not simple, is following it! And I wonder why it is so hard for us to follow, basically one command: to love. According to Matthew 22:37-40, we are simply commanded to love: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind … You shall love your neighbor as yourself….” These two commandments sum up the ten that were given to Moses and the Israelites–thou shalt not, thou shalt not, etc. Jesus fulfilled the law so we are no longer under the law, including the ten commandments; however, Jesus gave us two simple commandments, and by them “hang all the law and the prophets.” By obeying the two commandments to love, we are obeying the ten commandments without even trying. By loving God and honoring Him, you certainly wouldn’t have any gods before Him; by obeying God and loving others you certainly wouldn’t murder anyone. And on goes the list. By loving God with all our heart, soul and mind, and loving our neighbor as ourselves, we are bringing on world peace, if we could just do it. One constant thread in my disobedience in loving others, is pride and selfishness. “What about me?” “I want or I [think] I need…” but I have learned, through some very difficult and painful trials, that it is not all about me! It’s all about Jesus!Let me say that again so it gets deep down in your spirit: IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS! At the end of the day and the end of the world, only one thing matters–our relationship with Christ. When I feel that thread of selfishness and pride trying to sew its way through what God is asking me to do, I have to take a step back and look at the big picture–SOULS! He wants us to have a relationship with Him, and to show others how much he loves them so He can have a relationship with them as well. How do we show others the love that God has for them by being rude, stingy, greedy, selfish, boastful, or even just downright mean! We can’t. Nor can we always walk in love, at least not without the Author of love living within us, loving through us, and teaching us what real love is all about. And with Him, we can do our best to try and keep trying. Do we really love God? Then we need to love Him with all our heart, soul and mind and we need to show Him our love by loving others, and without condition. We are not told to love others “if”–no–we are told to love others just as God loves us–imperfectly standing right in the mess we are in, and so we shall love our imperfect, messy neighbor, just as Jesus did.†

Explosive Pen Pal Ministry Issues Solemn Call Needs People willing to write to Prison Inmates
Matching over 100 Inmates a Month, Remarkable Harvest is Praying Daily for Earnest Laborers to Serve Jesus Christ. "We send people to nations far away, and that’s good, but there are people right here who need and long to learn about JESUS," says Beth Michael who Co-directs Christian Pen Pals with her husband, Jesse. "There are many prisoners who want and need pen pals to help them find and/or grow in their relationship with JESUS. We can serve Jesus and reach out to someone right from our homes, through letters." The thriving organization hit the ground running in 1998 when it was founded by the Michaels and Christopher Dunn, an inmate they informally adopted as a son. It has grown in both numbers and credibility and is currently used as a referral by some of the most renowned Christian organizations in America including: The Billy Graham Evangelical Association, Joni & Friends, Stonecroft Ministries, RBC Ministries, and T.D. Jakes Potter’s House. "We hear from many inmates who are hungry to know Jesus and anxious to have a friend who can support them in helping to provide a second chance in life." The Michaels notes, "Sadly, there is a waiting time of over a year now for the males – the harvest is white, the workers are few; we are praying to the God of the harvest daily." Christian Pen Pals matches people in prison with Christians who are willing to correspond with them. The ministries growth has exceeded both their expectation and imagination. They are now matching over 100 inmates a month with a caring Christian. "Lives have been touched and changed, not only the inmates', but those of us on the outside who are sharing with them," explain the Michaels. “We are encouraged by the many wonderful testimonials of God’s mercy and power to change hearts." According to the Michaels, the only things needed to be a successful pen pal are a willing heart and a pen. “Could you correspond with one or more, could God use you as a mentor, encourager, teacher, or a friend to someone feeling abandoned?” She adds,“Maybe you could begin a ministry group in your church!!”
