Pierre started his business as a furniture restorer 25 years ago. Today all of Pierre’s furniture is locally manufactured by over 180 South African craftsmen in the 4000 m 2 factory in Lansdowne, Cape Town. Pierre Cronje pieces are truly South African future heirlooms, both from their design origin and through the artisans who craft them.

Pierre Cronje original pieces are created in a variety of styles that combine international furniture trends with Cape heritage design, including Classic, Country and Contemporary ranges. Pierre’s Bespoke range is the most exclusive. The expression of individual preference has earned the Pierre Cronje brand a distinct following.

Z ANDLO 0 PER DININ G TABL E The name Zandloper comes from the dutch word for hourglass, the shape of the tables’ base. It features hand forged nails which are for construction, not decorative. It has been developed by Pierre Cronje as a way to make use of the tremendously character filled French Oak that is currently being imported. Currently Pierre favours rare French Oak, which he personally sourced from France. The individual trunks are cut to specification, stacked and bound together

in their original form to be used in single furniture items such as tabletops. This method ensures that the grain of the wood matches in the final product. At the end of a lifespan of a tree, many as old as 600 years, Pierre believes that the symbiosis of man and tree lives on through timeless functional furniture pieces. Locally wood is sourced through Forest Stewardship Council compliancy (FSC), ensuring sustainable forestry practice.

PIERRE’S TIPS

Pierre likes to combine different timbers, whether this is for one piece or within a room. French Oak which is a lighter, sandy coloured timber and rich brown timbers like Walnut complement each other well. This is inspired by traditional Cape Dutch furniture where Stinkwood, a hard wood, was used for the carcasses of cupboards and units where softer, fruit woods like French Cherry, Witels and Yellowwood were used for the doors and drawer fronts. These days different pieces of furniture made from different materials can work alongside each other in the same space. Caring Instructions: Natural Oak and Blackwashed Oak: a damp cloth with a little Sunlight liquid when necessary. Dark Oak is usually polished and can be cared for using our Pierre Cronje wax.
