ED’S NOTE

In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer. - Albert Camus I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with winter. Part of me is a shorts and sun type of girl and then there’s this other side of me that craves the sound of rain and the nights cuddled up in front of the TV. Of course, near the end of winter I’ve generally had enough and I find myself starting to complain constantly about how cold my hands are. So this year, as with most, I’m going to try and enjoy winter as much as I can, and rejoice in the fact that even though it’s cold at least I have a roof over my head and a stove to cook curries and stews. This issue and the next we will be celebrating all that is winter, through places to stay, things to do and of course delicious meals to make. If there is one thing that I love most about winter it’s the great excuse to eat more and of course to drink more coffee! So join me in this celebration. I’d love to hear about your favourite places to go in winter and your favourite things to do. So pop me an email and let’s make this the best winter ever. Lastly, if you want to get involved in Flat White Magazine, through articles or advertising, please contact me. We’d love to welcome you to the Flat White family! With love, laughter and a lot of coffee. Christine www.flatwhiteconcepts.com

So you’re a coffee lover? You’ve tried most of the top coffee brands in South Africa, have your view on what’s good and what’s not, where the best coffee shops are and what’s the best on their menu... But have you tried to Roast Your Own Coffee yet? Commercially, you’d need a roasting drum set very specifically to a set time and temperature, but for home roasting, you can literally do it on the hob, or on the braai, just like the Ethiopians do. RYO Coffee is South Africa’s first dedicated green Micro lot distributor and we’re here to help you make amazing coffee, yourselves. You can find most required tools on our site (beans, grinder, measuring spoons, French Press), and everything else is probably already in your kitchen (pan / pot, stove, sieve), as well as a host of information to do with the roasting, grinding and brewing of your coffee, and some other interesting facts that you may not know.

RED VELVET CRUMPETS (REfined Sugar Free) Serves two

I’m not sure about you but I’m finding it par- • 150ml coconut milk (or milk) ticularly difficult to get out of bed in the morn- • 2 tbsp honey ing with this cold weather. If you agree then it • 2 tbsp coconut oil seems there should be something worth getting up for right? Not oats or egg but rather red velvet crumpets perhaps?

Method

These crumpets are very simple to make and a lot of fun come to think of it! My mum would often let me cook pancakes, crumpets and waffles when I was young and I loved it! Not much has changed since then as they’re still my favourite thing to make. The recipe is refined sugar free – using honey to sweeten it. As for the topping I also kept it free from refined sugar by using banana, coconut whipped cream (it’s so easy to make – http:// minimalistbaker.com/how-to-make-coconutwhipped-cream/) and natural peanut butter. You could also top it with stewed apple, plain yoghurt and honey or just keep things simple with butter and honey.

Ingredients

1. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. 2. Seperate the egg and place the egg white in a medium size bowl. 3. Make a well in the dry mixture and add the coconut milk, beetroot juice and egg yolk. Whisk it together. 4. Melt together the honey and coconut oil and stir it in. 5. Whisk the egg white and fold in 6. Heat a good non-stick pan on a medium heat. Grease the pan with butter or coconut oil. 7. Pour some of your batter into the pan and fry for a couple of minutes until small bubbles start to form on the surface of the crumpet. Loosen the crumpet with a spatula and flip it over. Cook for about another minute. Serve immediately. Notes: If you are using a juicer to make your own beetroot juice then do so before you start making the batter.

But I was very excited to discover their set menu which sounded just perfect for winter. I decided to go for their two course menu but after seeing what was on offer for dessert I think I’m going to have to go back. I must’ve had great will power that night. Or perhaps it was stupidity? After all, the word Lindt appears three times on the dessert menu. Okay, I’m definitely going back. We had a lovely evening and I highly recommend it. The price is also fantastic, with the two course menu going for only R95 and the three course for R125. So what’s on the menu? Starters: • Rice paper rolls - chicken and crunchy veg served with a peanut sauce. (My choice) • Deep fried spicy calamari. • Prawn cheese & coriander spring rolls served with sweet chilli. (Warren’s choice)

• Vegetable spring rolls served with sweet chilli. Mains: • Chicken, roasted chilli and cashew nuts, stir fry veg served with egg noodles. (Warren’s choice) • Marinated sweet and sour beef noodles, stir fry veg, egg noodles and a hint of mint. (My choice) • Wok fried chicken in a Malay curry sauce, stir fry veg, fresh chilli served with egg noodles. • Grilled calamari with a side of your choice. • Thai green chicken curry with savoury rice. books to cuddle up to this winter We asked you what books you are cuddling up to this winter, and here’s what you had to say. Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner by Dean Karnazes Ultrarunning legend Dean Karnazes has run 262 miles-the equivalent of ten marathons-without rest. He has run over mountains, across Death Valley, and to the South Pole-and is probably the first person to eat an entire pizza while running. With an insight, candor, and humor rarely seen in sports memoirs (and written without the aid of a ghostwriter or cowriter), Ultramarathon Man has inspired tens of thousands of people-nonrunners and runners alike-to push themselves beyond their comfort zones and be reminded of “what it feels like to be truly alive,” says Sam Fussell, author of Muscle. Suggestion by Heids @B0kk13 Shantaram: A Novel by Gregory David Roberts “It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.” So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay’s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere. Suggestion by Leigh-Ann Luckett @FindingWining Sister-Sister by Rachel Zadok In childhood Thuli and Sindi are inseparable, pinkie-linked by a magic no one else can understand. Then a strange man comes knocking, bringing news from a hometown they didn’t know existed. His arrival sets into motion events that will lead them into the darkest places, on a search for salvation where the all-too-familiar and the extraordinary merge, blurring the boundaries between dream and reality. CREATE The Humans by Matt Haig The Humans is a funny, compulsively readable novel about alien abduction, mathematics, and that most interesting subject of all: ourselves. Our hero, Professor Andrew Martin, is dead before the book even begins. As it turns out, though, he wasn’t a very nice man--as the alien imposter who now occupies his body discovers. Sent to Earth to destroy evidence that Andrew had solved a major mathematical problem, the alien soon finds himself learning more about the professor, his family, and “the humans” than he ever expected. When he begins to fall for his own wife and son--who have no idea he’s not the real Andrew-the alien must choose between completing his mission and returning home or finding a new home right here on Earth. Suggestion by Helga Pearson This Burns My Heart by Samuel Park Chamara is difficult to translate from Korean to English: To stand it, to bear it, to grit your teeth and not cry out? To hold on, to wait until the worst is over? Such is the burden Samuel Park’s audacious, beautiful, and strong heroine, Soo-Ja Choi, faces in This Burns My Heart, an epic love story set in the intriguing landscape of postwar South Korea. On the eve of marriage to her weak, timid fiancÉ, Soo-Ja falls in love with a young medical student. But out of duty to her family and her culture she turns him away, choosing instead a world that leaves her trapped by suffocating customs. In a country torn between past and present, Soo-Ja struggles to find happiness in a loveless marriage and to carve out a successful future for her only daughter. Suggestion by Amber Gutermann Breakfas with Buddha by Roland Merullo When his sister tricks him into taking her guru on a trip to their childhood home, Otto Ringling, a confirmed skeptic, is not amused. Six days on the road with an enigmatic holy man who answers every question with a riddle is not what he’d planned. But in an effort to westernize his passenger—and amuse himself—he decides to show the monk some “American fun” along the way. From a chocolate factory in Hershey to a bowling alley in South Bend, from a Cubs game at Wrigley field to his family farm near Bismarck, Otto is given the remarkable opportunity to see his world—and more important, his life—through someone else’s eyes. CREATE How did you come up with the idea for your I will be writing 5, 10 or 20 years down the line, first book, The Legacy? but as long as I’m still writing, I’ll be happy. I was reading a lot of dystopian fiction right before I wrote The Legacy and it struck me that most of the novels written in this genre feature ‘unlikely heroes’ as the protagonist. Many dystopias are written for a YA audience and, as such, the main characters are often in their teens. I find it difficult to believe that where 5-star Generals fail, high school students survive, although it does make for spectacular reading. I tried to write a dystopian book with characters that are exceptional, equipped with the skills and the gifts to not just survive but excel in the harshest of circumstances. The character of Rebecca came to me first and the plot evolved around her.

What is the market like for South African authors compared to overseas?

You've also written a psychological romance as well as a science fiction action novel. Would you say there is a particular genre that you enjoy writing the most or do you have a few different writing styles?

What 3 books have had the most impact on you?

The SA market is much smaller than the overseas market, particularly when it comes to fiction. Becoming a successful fiction writer in this country is incredibly difficult. South African publishers are cautious and very selective, but with the advent of independent publishing, and the ease of use of international platforms such as Amazon, it is possible to compete with our international counterparts. South African authors are also incredibly supportive of one another, which really helps.

I honestly couldn’t say. I don’t think any particular book has influenced my writing, although people will always draw comparisons. As to my personal I write predominantly in the speculative fiction favourite reads, I would have to say Harry Potgenres – dystopia, fantasy, sci-fi. was lucky enough to spend the night at Protea Hotel’s Fire & Ice! in Gardens. I had been there once before for an event and since then I had been itching to go back. I knew that it would be the perfect place to get warm this winter, which is funny because within moments of arriving I was already gulping down one of their famous milkshakes. But really, how could I resist? Mention Fire and Ice! to anyone and their first words are ‘you have to try their milkshakes’. So obviously, this is what we did. It took us quite a while to decide, after all they offer a whopping 37 different varieties, but in the end I went for The Bees Knees - dark chocolate, orange and honeycomb. Warren wanted a bit of a kick in his so he went for the Elephant’s Truck Amarula Cream. Both were amazing but I must say, The Bees Knees was one of the best milkshakes I have ever tasted. I have decided that my new goal in life should be to make my way through the entire menu. Who wants to join me?

How I became Iron Woman

A

few months ago, just before the Two Oceans Marathon, I found myself with very little energy and constant problems every time I went out for a run. I had no idea what was wrong but assumed I was just tired from all the training. It was strange because I was only doing the half marathon and I am quite used to training for runs longer than that. I finished the Two Oceans but I wasn’t at all happy with my time. I found the race hard and I battled with a lack of energy throughout. A few weeks later I attended the Rondebosch Park Run and did one of the worst times ever. I had sore shins, no energy and just a general feeling of unease. So I decided to make an appointment with the doctor. I knew that I wanted to check my iron levels because it was something that I had battled with before. A few days later the doctor phoned me back in shock. My levels were dangerously low and if I didn’t do something about it now I would be in trouble. I was to take double strength iron tablets, eat as much iron rich food as possible and I had to stop running.

was pounding in pain. I dutifully took my iron tablets and coupled it with multivitamins, omega 3 and vitamin B. I have never been a very good vitamin taker but I was determined to get better. The problem with low iron levels is that it takes forever to fully restore them again. I am not a very patient person when it comes to exercise and I hated the fact that I couldn’t run. I had a very interesting chat to the doctor during one of my check ups when we spoke about why my iron levels were so low. Firstly it seems I am just naturally prone to lose iron faster than most people, and being a female and being on the pill makes it even worse. Exercising, especially running, can have such a big impact on some women that there is even something called ‘Runner’s Anemia’, and has to do with the pounding of the feet on the tar. It seems I was doomed.

I have been running for many years but I have only become anemic twice. The first time was when I had just started running and was training for my very first marathon. The second time was now, when I had decided to concentrate on speed rather than distance. Both times I was pushing myself too much The next few weeks were terrible. I found too soon. That’s the problem with myself and myself feeling worse and worse, to the point running, I get too addicted to the feeling of it. where I was battling to breathe and my head www.flatwhiteconcepts.com | Issue 25

DISCOVER I realised that I push myself too much sometimes for reasons I cannot even explain. It took this incident to make me take a step back and look at how important it is to look after my body at all times. Keeping fit and healthy is important but looking after my body is even more so. I like pushing myself. I like to see how much I’m capable of. But I need to stop comparing myself to other people, and to do things in my own time and in my own way. Through this journey I have rediscovered myself. I spent the first week relaxing and waiting for the headaches to subside. Then the next few weeks I went for hour long walks each day instead of running. I forgot how nice it was to simply walk and watch the world around me. It was a great time of self-reflection and good for the body and the mind. Then, when I started feeeling a bit better, I incorporated some yoga back into my life. I have always loved yoga but I have neglected it a lot lately. I found myself some free home videos and practiced for about fifteen minutes a day. It was wonderful. Now, almost two months later, I’m feeling like my old self again. I’m back to running again but I’m doing it in a way that is smart and enjoyable. I did my first Park Run in ages and I ended up doing one of my best times. It seems all my body needed was a bit of a break. I’ve also started going to the gym again. I belong to the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. I’ve never been a big gym person but this gym is a wonderful place and I’m enjoying keeping fit in new ways. I’ve even used the swimming pool and I discovered that I enjoy swimming far more than I thought I did. I finally realized that it’s good to take time for yourself. It’s good to have long breaks. It’s good to keep fit and healthy. And it’s good to just have fun with it all. I am Iron Woman.

(Salomie du Plessis & Patrys Niemand) The furkids that join the Lucky Lucy family are mostly abandoned and abused souls that come from townships and strays in need of urgent help. We accept transfers from other animal welfare organizations too. A large percentage of new intakes are what we call the no-hope left cases that need urgent medical care and rehabilitation afterwards. We focus on the furkids that stand a very slim chance at other shelters. We take in the neglected, sometimes non-socialized, abused, sick and old ones and give them a ‘home’ in our shelter to call their own until their dreams come true and they find forever homes. We help owners who cannot afford medical care for their furkids during Outreach programs. These are called ‘act of kindness’ cases and we provide them with general and medical care and love at our shelter until they are fit to go back to their owners where we monitor their progress

to ensure they are healthy and happy. We get our cats from: • People surrendering their animals because they move to accommodation that do not allow pets. • Abandoned cats left behind when people move out of their current homes into new homes. • People emigrating and not taking their cats with. • Stray cats that have been living on the streets and some that are hurt. • Stray cats moving into a neighbourhood trying to get food at homes where the existing animals do not tolerate their presence. • From other Welfare Organisations that are not pro-life and where they feel the animal has a good chance of getting a home even though it might take some time. • Unsterilised cats being dumped in other neighbourhoods because they are a nuisance to neighbors. This is a challenge because the animal needs to be advertised as found and can only be available for adoption after 7 days if not claimed by an owner. In some instances we find the owner and they do not want the cat any more because they got kittens to replace the older cat. • One of the biggest contributing factors are unsterilised female cats. The mother and the kittens are then surrendered.

Volunteers on Saturday 30 May 2015.
