VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S DESK May is Teacher Appreciation Month Raise your hand if you remember a teacher. Is your hand raised? Mine sure is. Who among us can’t think of a teacher who impacted our learning, selfesteem and classroom success while also being a role model and good friend?

The Greater Flagstaff Chamber acknowledges the value and significance of every single teacher in our public, private and charter schools by celebrating them during their month – MAY - and throughout the year. You see, about a dozen years ago the Board of Directors decided to celebrate teachers and thank them for their priceless role preparing young minds for future careers and social responsibility. From that awareness came Flagstaff Values Teachers, an ongoing expression of gratitude through discounts offered by businesses in the community to Flagstaff’s educators.

As a former educator myself, I understand teachers’ desires to ensure students have the tools and materials they need to succeed. To that end, the Chamber has run a teacher supply drive for five years with local business partners. We have partnered with more than 70 local businesses to create the above-mentioned Flagstaff Values Teachers, a discount card with which teachers may receive a better than average discount for needs outside the classroom, such as an oil change, dinner or glass of wine.

Collaborating with teachers has been our forte through our Education Division since 2006. Our Skills for Work Success initiative pairs teachers with local businesses to give students opportunities to network with leaders in the community. Owners and managers share employability information in classrooms, and students visit businesses to understand work environments and available career paths. It’s a win-win.

In the summer, we have been pleased to offer science and technology instruction for 11- to 16-year-olds through a partnership with APS and our host, Coconino Community College. This year’s STEM Camps will feature such topics as Coding, Web Development, Robotics, Space Exploration, 3D Printing and Drones. We provide the opportunity for our technologically-talented youth to put their skills to great use as they explore these options.

As technology dominates our lives, learning basic computer programming isn’t just a smart idea, it’s an essential skill for grown-ups and children alike.

The mission of Flagstaff STEM Camp is to introduce Greater Flagstaff youth of all socio-economic levels to these higher-level activities through hands-on learning. In the process, we hope these kids will gain useful technical skills, experience the joy of creating something from idea to fruition, and learn how to learn.

Learning how to build simple websites and games helps kids refine logic and problem-solving abilities.

It also allows them to express ideas and creativity in unique ways. The sky is the limit!

The Chamber is dedicated to remaining active in and committed to education in our community.

We celebrate teachers and their dedication, commitment and passion, and we honor them for all that they are and do this May, Teacher Appreciation Month.

The institute has hundreds of volunteers that help and also works with AmeriCorps, which is a national service that compensates for the workers time on projects. One of their big projects is Arizona Ready for College and Career where they are dedicated to getting groups of all ages a higher level of education. Families can volunteer together at the food center where they learn so much more than just giving back to our community. Fred Reese is the General Manager of Little America Flagstaff, and an important member of the Flagstaff community. We are happy to spotlight him this month as he has worked in hospitality for 34 years, and always greets people with a smile. Fred attended Northern Arizona University, and considers himself a proud Flagstaff local.

FRED REESE WHY ARE YOU IN YOUR BUSINESS OR PROFESSION? I have a desire to serve and interact with people. Sitting at a desk and performing the same task every day is not very desirable to me. In hospitality your day is always different and offers so many challenges and rewards.

HOW LONG HAS YOUR COMPANY BEEN IN BUSINESS OR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS PROFESSION? The Little America Hotel in Flagstaff opened in 1973, so we just celebrated 45 years last year. I started in the hospitality profession over 34 years ago and have enjoyed all the highs and lows that it brings day in and day out. You are never bored when you work in this profession.

FROM WHOM DO YOU SEEK BUSINESS ADVICE? I seek business advice from many different people. The individuals I report to, the staff I have the pleasure of working with, the customers I have the honor of serving and my family. Remember to put your ego aside and be humble, and you will find there are many out there that want to help you.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN YOUR PROFESSION? Have patience and don’t take feedback personally. In the hospitality industry, your patience will be tried on a day to day basis by your peers, your customers, and your staff. Listen to all of them and encourage feedback. When you get the input, don’t take it personally and use it to become better at what you do.

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS? I attribute my professional success to what I learned from my father. He was a very hardworking and honest man who spent his life in the public sector. Both as a police officer and a college professor, he committed

his life to helping others. He instilled in me that same strong work ethic and drive to interact with and help in the community.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? I like to remodel homes. I get a great sense of accomplishment from tearing something apart and rebuilding it better than it was before. I also get great enjoyment spending time with my family. We are a close-knit crazy bunch that likes to go out to eat, travel, listen to music, go to the movies or just hang out and talk.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My family inspires me. They mean the world to me and I want to be the same example to them as my parents were to me. I lost my father at a young age, yet the life lessons and work ethic I learned from him are engrained in me, and I apply them every day.

WHAT MANTRA OR RULE DO YOU STRIVE TO LIVE BY? There are two I like to live by. “You get what you expect from what you inspect.” Mr. Holding lived by this, and it has carried on in our company culture. The other one is, “You should never ask someone to do something for you that you wouldn’t do for them.” I believe a good leader should always be willing to roll up their sleeves and work side by side with their employees.

WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO BE IN 10 YEARS? I hope to still be working for Little America.

I am very blessed to work for this excellent company that treats all its staff with so much respect and like we are a part of their family.

The kids will all be out of the house by that time, allowing my wife and me to travel.

Who knows, we might even have some grandchildren to dote on.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO LIVE AND STAY IN FLAGSTAFF? I attended NAU in my youth and always wanted to come back. My wife is from Camp Verde, and we wanted to be close to our extended family and Flagstaff is the perfect location for that. I also love the four seasons and mountain destination as well as how conveniently it is located to all the places we like to go.

WHAT IS WORSE THAN FAILURE? I think being afraid to fail is worse than failure.

You must fail in life to get better, and you learn from your failures. There is a great quote from Michael Jordan: “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying”.

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU TODAY THAN IT WAS 10 YEARS AGO? Spending quality time with my family and finding a better work-life balance. We have a very short time on this earth, and you must make time for those that you love and care for.

WOODSON ENGINEERING & SURVEYING CELEBRATES 25 YEARS In June, Woodson Engineering and Surveying will celebrate its 25th year in business!

The business was immediately successful growing to 12 employees in 18 months.

Mark Woodson and his wife Lupe started the company using their spare bedroom as an office which they outgrew quickly. The location changed twice in the first year to keep pace with the growing staff.

Other notable projects that have touched the lives of many residents include the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, The Peaks Senior Living Community, the Branigar-Chase Discovery Center and Colton House at the Museum of Northern Arizona, Coconino Community College's Lone Tree Campus, and the Village at Aspen Place.

The footprints of the firm are visible across northern Arizona. One of Woodson’s first high-profile projects was Ponderosa Trails.

This popular master-planned subdivision was Flagstaff’s largest and included 1,500 units on 350 acres. The new development under construction on the west side of town on Route 66, known as Timber Sky, is another one of the firm’s projects.

One of Woodson's earliest contracts was with the City of Winslow as the City Engineer - a role they continue to fill to this day.

Woodson has managed the redevelopment of Winslow’s historic downtown area which has spanned over 20 years with over $20 million of improvements. The project, known as Renaissance on Route 66, features the Standin’ on the Corner Park.

Woodson had a major role in the redevelopment of Flagstaff’s southside business area. The firm designed the improvements along San Francisco and Beaver Streets south of the tracks with an emphasis on beautification elements and

Woodson also serves as the City Engineer for the City of Williams and the on-call engineer for Camp Navajo. They recently completed a Water Master Plan for Williams that will help the City diversify its water resources and build redundancy into their system. Mark

Woodson indicated that “the services that we provide to Camp Navajo are similar to those required in serving a small city, since they have a significant amount of infrastructure to maintain and improve.”

When asked to reflect on the 25th anniversary, Mark explained “there are several things that have been part of our success. First, I’d like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to all our clients over the years, and especially those who have entrusted us with their projects year after year. I also want to recognize our great staff that has consistently delivered quality projects, resulting in many repeat clients. Finally, I thank my family for their support – it’s been a great 25 years and I look forward to many more.”

CHAMBER BUSINESS ADVOCACY CITY OF FLAGSTAFF GUIDELINES FOR TRASH DISPOSAL Here are some friendly reminders which will help keep our Flagstaff community clean!

Acceptable Trash Guidelines • Place all household trash in secured plastic bags to prevent spillage and to keep the container clean • Materials such as small trimmings and yard debris should fit easily into the container • Animal wastes should be wrapped in plastic bags and tied • Household generated diabetic sharps such as needles and syringes must be placed in a sealed sturdy plastic container such as a laundry detergent container. The plastic container must not be clear. It must be sealed with duct tape and the words "Not Recyclable" must be written clearly on the container. This properly labeled and sealed container can then be placed in the trash • 150 pounds is the maximum weight when full. Lids should be closed Unacceptable Trash Items The following materials should not be placed in the brown trash container. These materials can harm trash collectors, the equipment, and the environment: • Liquids of any type - the trash in landfills must be as dry as possible • Hot coals, ashes or lit cigarettes • Building and construction debris - dirt / rocks, tree trunks, carpets or large scraps • Furniture, appliances or auto parts - water heaters, major appliances, couches/chairs, car bumpers, fenders, engine blocks, batteries, items over 50 pounds • Unwrapped sharp objects - broken glass should be well-wrapped in newspaper before placing it in the trash • Household Hazardous Waste: CFLs, fluorescent tubes, paint, cleaning fluids, coolant, motor oil, insecticides, solvents, acids, gasoline, pool chemicals, highly flammable liquids, radioactive materials, gardening or toxic chemicals • Medical waste from home health care services may require special disposal - talk to your doctor or provider about disposal instructions

Flagstaff Young Professionals participated in an Earth Day Community Clean up. The group of driven individuals volunteered to pick up trash around Flagstaff and had a great time talking with local community members about ways to continue to keep our city clean. They picked up over 5 bags of trash and 4 bags of recycling in an hour and a half! The event had over 75 locals participate and was hosted by the Flagstaff Sustainability Program and Arizona Conservation Corps.

Bookman's sponsored the event by providing breakfast and giveaways! One final shout out to FYP's group Leader, Dr. Edward Griffin from Natural Grocers, he did a great job educating FYP on sustainability practices! Overall the event was a huge success and we would like to thank the members of FYP that came out and participated. You really made a difference!
