Technology has impacted virtually every aspect of our lives. The proliferation of tiny sensors that can be integrated into just about any physical item is expected to exponentially increase the number of devices that an average home or business uses.

An often-overlooked impact of the desire for the latest and greatest is the environment. Anything that uses batteries or plugs in for power can contain toxic materials that range from lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury, brominated flame-retardants or polychlorinated biphenyls. The world is now discarding around 50 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste) per year, which is more in weight then all of the commercial aircraft ever made! It’s the fastest growing municipal waste sector in the U.S. Here’s the biggest problem – 80% to 85% of e-waste is improperly discarded and usually ends up in our landfills which can contaminate ground water or in incinerators where the hazardous chemicals can become airborne.

What We Can All Do Did you know that it takes over 500 lbs. of fossil fuel, almost 50 lbs. of harsh chemicals and 1.5 tons of water just to create one computer and display?

This makes it easy to see why upgrading an older computer rather than replacing it helps the environment. Even if you can’t find a use for it, donating it to a charity or shelter before it becomes useless to anyone else helps. The same goes for your old tablets and smartphones; just because it’s not good enough for you anymore doesn’t mean that someone else can’t benefit from it. (Hint: don’t let your old technology sit in a closet or drawer for years before you decide to get rid of it)!

Year Round Recycling Drop Off Data Doctors is celebrating 30 years of helping people with their technology: A community service initiative we adopted over a decade ago leading the way in providing an easy way for people to responsibly dispose of their old technology. Our long-standing partnership with Westech Recyclers, which is a certified electronics recycler, allows us to serve as a drop-off location in Flagstaff for all of Northern Arizona. Unlike many other organizations that only offer the ability to drop off e-waste

MUSEUM OF NORTHERN ARIZONA Chamber Introduces MNA Executive Director Mary Kershaw Mary Kershaw, the new Executive Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona, arrived just in time for the museum’s busy summer season, packed with cultural festivals, live music performances on Thursday evening, and the Gala fundraiser.

At different times she was responsible for a medieval abbey, a historic observatory, an 11th century hermit’s cave and a 12th century castle. Compared to those the oldest building at the Museum of Northern Arizona, the 134-year-old McMillan Homestead, is practically new.

She is taking every opportunity to meet community members and talk with museum supporters. “These initial conversations are so helpful in understanding the aspirations and potential of a museum. It is important to go beyond conversation and create opportunities for broad involvement, too,” said Kershaw. “The museum has a great reputation, so we are building from a position of strength. I look forward to exploring new partnerships for the museum, both within Flagstaff, across the Southwest, and possibly beyond."

A seasoned museum professional, Kershaw came to MNA from the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, where she was Director for nine years. During her tenure in Santa Fe, the museum celebrated its Centennial and launched a $12.5 million capital campaign for a new art venue.

The Museum of Northern Arizona is also counting down toward its 100th year. “In my view, the centennial is a time to look back at the origins of the museum and to understand what energy, creativity and innovation led to the foundation of the museum 100 years ago,” said Kershaw. “As we move into the next century, how can those founding values be relevant to our museum and our communities today?"

Kershaw also appreciates that the museum founders had the foresight to combine science, culture and art in a single institution, building diverse collections spanning geology, paleontology, archaeology, botany, zoology, fine art and more.

“I love working with a range of collections, and seeing what creative connections and conversations emerge from working

Nancy Emerick, Executive Director of Haven of Flagstaff and Flagstaff resident, was recently honored and presented the Executive Leadership award by the Arizona Health Care Association in its 2019 annual conference in Scottsdale.

Emerick has been a part of Haven Health since 2013 just before the location in Flagstaff underwent a full-scale multimillion-dollar renovation. Emerick has been a caring professional for more than 20 years in several roles throughout the country. At Haven Health, Emerick leads a team of 115 dedicated caregivers in various capacities. But it’s not just the professional experience at work here.

Programs include Free Art Workshops for Youth and Adults all year long, and WAA sponsors Youth Art Month in March and the Senior Show in November.

One of WAA’s most significant programs is the annual 8th Grade Identity through Photography Project at Williams Middle School. During this project, students are given professional instruction on the concepts of photography, composition, and how to make a statement through photography. Another major project is the Williams Second Saturday ArtWalk, which WAA organizes and promotes every year, May through October. It showcases a wealth of original, quality arts and crafts, reflecting the diverse beauty of Northern Arizona.

BUSINESS ADVOCACY Coconino County & City of Flagstaff Simultaneously Review Zoning Code By: Joe Galli The question of what will Flagstaff look like in coming years has loomed over the community for recent decades. As a smaller community, relative to larger cities in Arizona, typical development and redevelopment often draw a keen eye from the public, which can result in changes to existing zoning guidelines.

Both the County and the City of Flagstaff are considering changes to the local zoning codes governing future development, and it's important you weigh-in during the public comment section of the process.

First, the City of Flagstaff Zoning Code Administrator, Daniel Symer, brought forth City zoning code changes related to accessory dwelling units or ADUs, and presented those changes to the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission in late June. Those changes seem to be acceptable, including clearly defining an ADU, and will move forward to the Mayor and Council with an approval recommendation.

Additionally, the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed proposed changes to mixed-use zoning in Flagstaff. While the changes are quite technical, they are designed to bring uniformity to future mixed-use projects, so they jive with what mixed-use development currently exists. The problem with this idea is some of the changes proposed could infringe on a property owners current property rights, causing a Prop 207 issue to arise, and subjecting the City of Flagstaff to lawsuits for a future restriction of property rights. The City Community Development staff, including Mr. Symer, are currently reviewing the proposed mixed-use changes for Flagstaff’s Zoning Code, and we should see the changes before the Mayor and Council before year’s end.

At the direction of the County Board of Supervisors, Coconino County Planning staff are also considering zoning code changes in an effort to: • Modernize the six-chapter code by reviewing land uses for those that are obsolete or unused, introduce new land uses to reflect changing trends and update the definitions.

• Review land uses that currently require conditional use permits for those that may be administratively permitted instead, meaning that these land uses may be permitted either with an administrative or a building permit.

• Clarify and improve performance standards to guide design and standards for many new and updated uses.

• Streamline and clarify administrative processes, such as expanding waiver criteria for administrative adjustments.

CHAMBER'S 4TH OF JULY PARADE ROCKS!

My wife Jane and I attended our first 4th of July Parade in Flagstaff. We had nearly front row seats on the corner of N. Beaver St and W. Aspen Ave. First, I was amazed to see well over 100 floats entered in the parade. The Greater Flagstaff Chamber did a tremendous job with organization. Being an engineer, I marveled at the comprehensive and detailed attention to safety. This was especially critical with the exceptionally large vehicles. Every large float or vehicle had spotters, in reflective vests keeping the kids away from the equipment and expertly navigating the turns throughout the parade route. This was truly impressive. Please thank Julie, Kat and the entire organizing committee for hosting such a wonderful Independence Day Parade.
