LETTER FROM

THE DIRECTOR

Y

ou know our jingle, you know our brand… For over 40 years the Home Design and Remodeling Show has been South Florida’s largest and most trusted destination for everything home design and home improvement. Four shows per year with two in Miami and two in Fort Lauderdale. 2020 was set to be an exciting year with our expansion to Palm Beach with our latest addition to our event calendar with the Palm Beach Home Design and Remodeling Show set to take place in May. Two weeks before our first Miami show in March of 2020 Covid-19 forced us to postpone all of our events until 2021. Rather than sitting back and waiting for Covid-19 to pass we decided to face these times head on to expand our reach and be the year-round destination that South Florida has always needed. The Home Design and Remodeling Shows are no longer just an event but rather a platform where homeowners and industry trend setters can unite. A location where you can find the latest tips, trends, information and inspiration right here in South Florida. We immediately recognized that family vacations have been put on hold, employees are working from home, kids are learning virtually and now… we have placed a greater value on where we live more than ever before. Home is no longer just a house. Home is where we work, where we learn, and where we create memories that last. With that being said, we all now want to make sure that our homes are exactly how we want them to be. Whether this means creating a work space

in a guest room with multi-functional furniture, expanding and improving our backyard lifestyle, improving our dated kitchens, reimagining our furniture and décor, and finally getting to those DIY projects that we have been putting off for so long. We could not be more excited for our inaugural issue of Home Design where we celebrate the outdoors. Come with us and reimagine your outdoor living and discover some of the greatest tips and inspiration for your backyard lifestyle. We bring the approachability back to home design and home improvement where you will see how we can turn your home into the Pinterest board that you have dreamt of. Learn more about our mission and how we are here for you 365 days of the year. We are South Florida and we are here for you. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed putting this together.

LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR Two weeks before quarantine began, my family moved into a new home. In addition to some extra space to accommodate for our growing toddler, our house had something that neither my husband or I had ever had before...a pool. Living in Florida, especially in South Florida, conditions you for a few things: jungle-like humidity during the summers, afternoon showers, and the occasional hurricane (just another reason for a party when it’s under a Category 2). But 2020 definitely had new challenges in store for homeowners. As we spent more time than ever in our homes, we couldn’t help but take a look around, formulate new projects and find ways to entertain, recreate, and ultimately find escape in our very own outdoor spaces. From socially distanced swim lessons, to midday dips to break up the monotony of remote workdays, our pool, the seemingly novel amenity in our new home, became one of our favorite places to be. I never knew how grateful we would be for that pool. This issue is a celebration of outside spaces, and the free-spirited lifestyle that they represent. From the latest in pool trends, to outdoor dining and grilling essentials, we’ve compiled south Florida’s foremost experts on creating outdoor spaces that are inviting, exciting, and more than anything, unique to each family they belong to. We hope you find as much inspiration reading this inaugural issue of the Home Design & Remodeling Magazine, as we did creating it, and we look forward to continuing to create together. To the outdoors,

EUROTECH MODERN DESIGN WITH FRANK MATA, PRESIDENT

Crafting state of the art, smartly designed aluminum kitchens with style.

W

hen working with clients I first like to become familiar with their space and the functionality and design that they are looking to achieve. Listening is the key to creating our clients dream outdoor space. I have been manufacturing kitchens for many years and have seen the capabilities and design styles that I am able to implement into each and every custom project. No two kitchens are the same as every home has a different dynamic or feature. I like to complement their outdoor space and design a space that is not only an extension to their home but also a place where they envision spending time with family and friends to entertain and enjoy. We understand that people not only want a quality kitchen, but also one that is smartly designed with the luxurious look. Trends within the indoor and outdoor kitchen industry is constantly evolving. We stay ahead of the curve by implementing different materials into our designs, whether that is the countertop or door fronts of our aluminum cabinetry. We find ourselves to

be more of trend setters and ones leading the way in innovation as we are working with a material and a system of construction that is unparalleled to any other product we have seen in the market today. We are excited to announce that we recently became KCMA certified (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association), which puts us in an elite category where our products have gone through the most rigorous of tests to prove our strength, integrity, and quality. Our product has gone through and successfully passed five structural tests, two doors tests, two drawer tests and five finish tests to automate approximately 20 years of use. The KCMA certification is the ultimate approval within the kitchen industry. To us, this is what trendsetting looks like and we can confidently show our clients that they are receiving the highest quality product and the greatest value that they can find. EuroTech kitchens are light weight, resistant to corrosion, mold resistant, non-toxic among many other desirable qualities that are important for any kitchen to have.

looking for a greater outdoor space to entertain and enjoy.

We find ourselves to be more of trend setters and ones leading the way in innovation as we are working with a material and a system of construction that is unparalleled to any other product we have seen in the market today. This pandemic has negatively impacted so many businesses but for us we have seen an incredible increase in demand. More people are staying home, less people are traveling and now homeowners are more focused on turning their house into a home. We have found that homeowners want to enjoy their space and spend time with those who are closest to them. When looking for more usable space to expand a home the greatest area to look is outdoors. We live in South Florida with the most beautiful weather that anyone can experience. The kitchen is the heart of the home and we are able to create that in the environment where South Floridian’s like to spend most of their time. We don’t just build outdoor kitchens, we create a lifestyle. We recently made the decision to over double the size of our production facility due to the overwhelming response in people

My favorite part of my job is to bring a dream to reality. Many of the people that I work with have never had a custom outdoor kitchen before. The dream of having a space where we can cook, entertain, and not have to worry about the product lasting is now a reality. I love to see the reaction from the homeowner or designer once the project is complete. Pictures are beautiful but the quality of our product is something that one must truly experience. When clients are looking to create a custom kitchen I suggest to ask for referrals and whether their product is KCMA certified. Referrals are true testimonials from people who have had a real experience with the company that you are looking to hire. If a product has the KCMA certification then they know that they can sleep at night in confidence that they are receiving the most high quality product that can be installed in their home. KCMA certified means that a major national organization with the highest regard did the homework for them to make sure that the consumer receives the quality product that they are paying for. There are many great companies out there delivering a beautiful design but I always recommend to know the product being installed as an investment should last and look great years from now and not just after completion. Delivering the Dream:

GALEY ALIX

12

HOME DESIGN MAGAZINE / HOMESHOWS.NET

GALEY ALIX She only knows how to over deliver, and with over 3.2 million followers, this DIY phenom is just getting started.

Weekend design warrior, Galey Alix shares her inspiring personal story, insights on her skyrocketing social media presence, and just how many times shoppers have offered to buy her entire cart at HomeGoods.

Tell us a little bit about your personal story, and how you found your niche in design? My story certainly subscribes to the “give your pain a purpose” mantra. My pain? Last year I opened up to my fiancé right before our wedding about having an eating disorder and I asked him for help. Because I’m so do-ityourself, asking for help is something I never do (never) so you can imagine how much I was struggling to have gotten to that point. I was breaking. Within an hour of opening up about it I was blindsided and sent on my way back home to Florida with my two dogs and everything from our home I could fit into two suitcases. I spent the next 3 months seeing a nutritionist, a therapist, and recovering from a heartbreak I can’t begin to describe the depths of. While in therapy, I left my Instagram videos up that I made of me DIY’ing and decorating the dream house we bought, even though I deleted the Instagram app from my phone so I could focus on recovering. When I felt healed enough to go back on, I was in complete shock. The decorating videos from our house that I had made for fun had started to go viral and I had hundreds of requests from people all over the world for me to decorate their home. The ironic part of this is that I work full time in finance and have been running that business since college. I’d never decorated for anyone, studied design, or even realized it was a passion of mine until I got engaged and we bought that home. I started saying yes to these requests and soon realized how healing this process was for me. I felt wanted again and I found my self-worth resurfacing with each space I lifted, and each homeowner I made smile. THIS. This is my purpose... and I had to go through that pain to find it. In the last year, I’ve continued to run my finance business for my Wall Street based firm while growing my DIY Design social media platforms to a combined 3.2 million followers.

You have an incredibly busy schedule with your weekend projects and full time career, how do you find time to balance everything and accomplish tasks and projects at such a high level? In one word? Efficiency. I’ve always been hyper efficient in how I work through problems and tasks. When you compound multi-tasking every day, your productivity builds quickly. It can be as simple as scheduling my conference calls on laundry day so that I can do both at once. It certainly helps that I’m single (though my two dogs should be considered full-time dependents on my tax return). I also physically write out a to-do list every night for what I want to accomplish the following day (and in what order I want to accomplish it in). When I wake up each morning there is no hesitancy about what to tackle first because the road map is already literally and physically spelled out for me. The only thing worse than making excuses for other people is making excuses for yourself. What is the most rewarding part of your design business; what keeps you going even when you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed? I love this question because the reality is, on every surprise install I inevitably hit a point of complete physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. It typically kicks in around 2:30am Sunday morning and doesn’t truly dissolve until I’m home, showered, and blow-drying my hair in preparation for the family’s surprise reveal that afternoon. When a complete stranger trusts me blindly with their savings and their home, I am entirely consumed with one thought: “I just promised to deliver on their dream, but how can I now over-deliver on that.” Then you have to price in the stress of furniture or decor inevitably breaking, painfully timed Florida hurricanes, and that I need to have this all wrapped up by Sunday so I can go back to my day job Monday morning.

This undoubtedly takes a toll and I am well aware this isn’t sustainable, but it’s working for me now as I start building out a team to help with future projects. That is the rewarding part. All the people I’m getting to touch, in big and small ways. Meeting new families, learning about their lives, and trying to make their home situation a little better is overjoying. Building a team means I am providing an opportunity for someone to also do what they love. The people are undoubtedly the most rewarding part of this business. We talked a little bit about places like HomeGoods and Target when we were at your house, talk to us a little bit about your favorite places to find hidden gems and how you mix and match with larger investment pieces? You nailed it. Homegoods and Target are my main jam (in that order). Budgeting is crucial, especially when it’s someone else’s money you’re spending, so I love stores that can help me stay within budget without sacrificing my design aesthetic. I often buy my larger pieces (think couches & beds) from places like The Parker Gwen, Wayfair and Houzz because I have great discounts there and they have high quality furniture that is already reasonably priced. For local stores in South Florida, I love Sanctuary Home & Gift, Broward Design and Vintage Vault. Not only do they source incredible and unique items that I just cannot find online, but they are all family owned. These are the businesses that need our support more than ever. Plus, my projects honestly wouldn’t look as good without any one of them! What design items should you spend on, and where can you go a little lighter? There’s only two reasons I would spend a lot on an item. First, if it will be heavily used and therefore needs to be well built and high quality, like a family room couch. Secondly, if it’s a one-of-a-kind show stopper, such as a chandelier that will pull the entire room together or a coffee table that’s unique and impossible to recreate. You can always spend less on pillows, candles, faux plants, and small decor items. I source all of these items on foot by treasure hunting at Homegoods for every project I’ve done. And let me tell you, it works 100% of the time. I may have to hit four different Homegoods, but my pursuit is relentless… and always victorious. We shot in a lot of spaces within your house; tell us about your favorite rooms or spaces, and what kind of design intention went into creating those spaces.

14

HOME DESIGN MAGAZINE / HOMESHOWS.NET

That’s like asking which child (dog) is my favorite. Impossible task. That said, I’ll have to say my master bedroom hallway that steps down into the master bath is my favorite room. The ceiling is shiplapped (can we please keep shiplap trending? Forever, please?), I draped the hallway windows in metal bead curtains (to allow light in during the day while maintaining privacy at night), and the fireplace in the background I built last year with my best friend Jay. It’s one of my favorite memories with him… a lot of Taylor Swift music, Sour Patch Kids, and at least 5 arguments in broken Spanglish, and yes, I realize saying “broken Spanglish” is redundant because Spanglish is broken Spanish + English… but this is broken-broken. What advice would you give to people that are interested in tackling DIY projects or home renovation for the first time? There’s a saying “Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail.” When it comes to DIY, I suggest you “Prepare to fail… then fail again… then 5 more times.” To be a successful do-it-yourselfer you’ve got to be determined, not afraid to fail (and often), and hard-headed (literally… wear hard hats often #WHHO). The real beauty in DIY isn’t the end result, it’s the

feeling you get every time you walk past something you created with two basic tools: your mind and your hands. And the more failed attempts you have on a project, the more rewarding that final feeling. So each time you have a setback, remember, that’s only going to make your feeling of accomplishment that much sweeter. Keep. Going. What are some of your favorite resources or sources of inspiration for design? I only have one source of inspiration: the homeowner. Because everything I’m doing is a surprise for them, I legitimately become an undercover CIA agent studying their life. I study their family dynamic, everything they’ve previously bought and why, what is and isn’t working for them, what their dream home would like and why, and then I listen just as closely to everything they aren’t saying. That is how to over-deliver. If I can anticipate their needs/wants before even they have and then deliver on them, that’s my inspiration right there. Then I just have to execute it… all in a weekend… and pray it works. Follow along with Galey’s weekend reveals on Instagram at @galeyalix.

COLOR STORY Never one to shy away from a little drama, color palette aficionado, Nicole White of Nicole White Designs shares her Sherwin Williams selects for 2021’s hautest color story. Urbane Bronze: “Love the moody vibes of this color. It’s dark but not as overpowering as a black paint so it’s an easy choice for projects.” Fashionable Gray: “Always a favorite gray for me and one of my go to neutrals. We needed this to transition from the moody vibe of the Urbane Bronze.” Cultured Pearl: “As dramatic as our designs tend to be, I always try to add moments of softness and this selection was made with that in mind. Think

of your paint selections like a story. Everyone can’t be the main protagonist, but everyone can have a key role.” Forward Fuschia: “You should know I live for positive drama, and this color is drama times ten. I’m a big believer in having a wow moment in a space, and this color achieves that.” Demure: “It’s the perfect foil to the drama of Forward Fuschia. Demure is that friend who will calm you down, and she functions like that in this color palette.”

TIPS FROM THE PRO

SELECTING THE PERFECT COLOR PALETTE Settle on your story. What do you want these colors to say in your space? Once you decide on that story, choose the lead paint as you would a lead actor or actress. And don’t be afraid to make a bold choice. Paint is literally the most forgiving item, since it can be easily changed.

Follow Nicole White @nicolewhitedesignsinteriors Designers, contact your local Sherwin Williams Designer Account Executive, Clint Craven at Clint.E.Craven@sherwin.com

Choose the supportive paint colors for that story by assigning them roles to soften the brightness or boldness of the main color, or to be a key transition color next to the lead color. Nicole White Designs Interiors is an award-winning and nationally published interior design firm. Recently voted among the Top 25 Interior Design Firms by the South Florida Luxury Guide, and among the ten emerging designers to watch by the Black Interior Designers Network, Nicole and her team are dedicated to transforming the spaces and lives of their clients homes and businesses.

LAUNCHING NOW: THE FLORIDA KING

ith over 20 locations throughout the state, CITY Furniture epitomizes the ideals of Florida living. This year, they’ve launched The Florida King, a mattress that’s 3 feet wider than the California King, along with all the accessories you’ll need to have your best rest. On their inspiration to launch the Florida King, President Andrew Koenig explains, “Many of our customers, and even team members, have big families with children and pets that all sleep in the same bed. It’s usually a pretty crowded and an uncomfortable arrangement, and no one really gets a good night’s sleep. After hearing about this challenge, we thought that our customers would appreciate a bed they could actually sleep in together comfortably.” The Florida King mattress starts at just $1499, with four different customizable mattresses and two color options, along with a la carte sheets, duvets, duvet covers and mattress covers.

“There’s definitely a sense of pride in having created a bed that is larger than a California King, and we wanted to spark some friendly competition with the West Coast.”

Choosing the Right Mattress It’s hard to find ultimate comfort without the right size. Remember that comfort level is subjective. A mattress that’s soft and plush to one person may be firm to another. Comfort is determined by the top layers and support is determined by what is under those layers. When the two mesh together in perfect harmony, that’s when you have found the perfect mattress. Get to know the most common mattress materials to select the right mattress for your unique sleep needs. After you purchase a mattress, be sure to maintain it by using the right bed frame and box spring, rotating regularly, and protecting your mattress with a washable mattress protector.

Brett Sugerman & Giselle Loor

Tell us a little bit about B+G got started and what is it like to work with your significant other. B+G was born in 2006. We met when working in a large interior design firm, where we discovered synergy when collaborating. This January will be 20 years of us working together as a team. Being that we had been working together as a design duo for such an extensive period of time, we effortlessly balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We have grown, evolved, and bettered our craft together, which has been an extremely rewarding experience. We have more respect for each other now that we have been business partners, married, and proud parents. What services do you offer, and when is the best time for a potential client to contact you? We are a full spectrum interior design firm specializing in turnkey projects. Our services include, but are not limited to interior design, architecture, and lighting design. We prefer for clients to contact us before building or purchasing their property so we can be involved from the beginning of the process. What would you consider your specialty? What is your favorite part about your job? Our specialty is our hands-on design process, which is what creates and builds life-long relationships with our clients. We are in constant communication throughout the project process to provide clients with comfort and security. Our legacy clients are a testament to our quality of work, level of customer service, and skill as designers. Do you have any exciting projects in the works that you can share? We were recently contacted by a legacy client to begin working on their new property in One Park Grove. We have designed homes for them in Washington D.C., Aspen, and South Florida. This is our ninth consecutive project with them and we consider them family. Our bond and relationship goes beyond client and designer. How was this year different from years past, did you see more people looking to renovate their home or build new homes? This year we feel that there was an influx of clients renovating their homes especially with quarantine in full effect. Most clients seek to have their home fully equipped with all of the bells and whistles. With that said, we were sure to add ample space for entertaining, home gyms, game rooms, home theaters, bar embellishments, and top of the line outdoor amenities. What are a few tips you can share with readers on how to select the right interior designer for their next project? We recommend that clients review an interior design firm’s design portfolio before hiring to assure that they are the proper fit, confirm that aesthetic is compatible, and meet with them to see if there is chemistry between client and designer. Outdoor Escapes Our outdoor spaces have become more important than ever this year, but how does the vision come together? We sat down with Jason West of JW Landscape Designs and Brian VanKirk of VanKirk Pools to chat about all things outdoors, and the synergy between their two companies. 26

HOME DESIGN MAGAZINE / HOMESHOWS.NET

Jason West, JW Landscape & Designs

For many homeowners, an amazing yard is a huge point of pride for them, how does this play into your approach to each unique home and/or design? Most homeowners take a lot of pride in their outdoor space, just like the rest of their home. For the most part, they all have the same goal in mind, to enjoy the space they have in the best way possible. Some people are looking for a more modern, low maintenance design that they can enjoy without a lot of maintenance. This type of project usually involves very clean lines with palms and artificial turf as the bulk of the design. Many homeowners are looking for something truly unique, and that allows us to get creative. We really enjoy the process of design. What are some of the trends that you are forecasting for 2021? What are your customers asking for? Artificial turf will definitely continue to be in demand. There are so many different ways to incorporate turf, and the product itself continues to evolve. LED landscape lighting is also extremely popular. We have partnered with a line that is top notch! The products and their features are the best on the market. IPE wood accents have also become a huge seller, whether it’s a decorative landscape wall, transitional piece, or an actual fence, IPE is here to stay, and we predict that we’ll see a lot more of this product in 2021. Did you see more of a focus on outdoor spaces when people went into quarantine this year? How has that impacted your business? 2020 has been an interesting year to say the least. We had a few record months of growth during the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing quarantine. We feel very fortunate that our company was able to continue running, and as a result that our employees were able to continue working. We’ve heard from many clients who, after being stuck in their homes for weeks, were looking for their own personal paradise. We truly

believe less travel, and more home entertaining is here to stay. What’s your favorite part about your own yard or outdoor space? What makes it special. My favorite part about my own outdoor space are the three Sylvester Palms that I installed around my pool! They are truly majestic and tie in the pool, patio and other accents trees and plants perfectly. Nighttime is my favorite time to sit out back. Our landscape lighting illuminates the whole space and with our new audio system, I never want to leave! We wanted to create a space that future clients could come by and see and say “I want this!” How should a homeowner approach a new landscape design, what are some of the questions they should be asking? A homeowner’s first question should be “How do I utilize the space I have in the most efficient way?” Homeowners should also have an idea of a couple elements they really like, and also be clear on what they don’t want. While no one likes to talk about the budget, homeowners should have a number in mind so everyone is on the same page from the beginning. Can you give us your top 3 tips on how to select the right landscaping firm? Interview a few different companies, and feel them out. Ask for references. You want to like and be able to trust the company that you’re working with. Look at your contractors completed projects. Like homeowners, all designers have their own vibe. Cost and quality are very important. These two usually go hand in hand. When top notch material is used, clients get to enjoy their outdoor space hassle free, for years to come. How has your industry changed since you started in 1975? In 45 years lots of things have changed and continue to change, fortunately we have been able to hire A+ employees. That not only excel at there departments, but also personally are great individuals. The last 45 years have truly been blessed because of all the members of the team and family culture. What is it about pools that brings families or homeowners so much joy? The Swimming Pool, along with the entire outdoor living space have an opportunity to change peoples lives. Whether it brings families with small children closer together for pool parties, or creating a private intimate space. The new dynamic the swimming pool opens up for them definitely brings homeowners the most joy. There is a debate about how much value adding a custom pool brings to your home, what’s your take on this? Well, that really depends on what type of swimming pool we’re talking about... does an ugly, poorly designed, poorly built swimming pool add value? No, But I do know with Covid, families are staying at home more as well as not traveling, along with the massive amount of families relocating from the northeast, California, or Internationally, to South Florida. I do know and see most of those families desire a home that also has a completed outdoor living space with pool, spa, pergola/hard roofed structure, with fully equipped BBQ/outdoor kitchen. We’re seeing those homes, when being listed, selling quickly and for Top Market Prices. So I’d say yes, an outdoor living space that offers families an extension of their home and lives absolutely adds tremendous value. What factors do you take into consideration when designing a custom pool? When designing a client’s outdoor living space , I’d say that each and every project offers unique variables that will need to be factored. Being that we construct the actual design, we have to make sure the homeowner provides us with a survey, then we contact the city to obtain the property setbacks. Now we’re ready for a site consultation with the client to discuss the potential project desires, but to also visually survey the potential project site. To see if there are any on-site variables that we would need to take into account while constructing. Did you see a big spike in your business throughout Co-Vid? Were more people motivated to create their own escape while being stuck at home? Yes, there has definitely been a spike in clients. People spending more time at home and staying away from public places especially water parks and community pools, there has definitely been an uptick in demand.

Talk to us about the collaboration between the architect, builder, landscape, and designer? What is that process like and where do you fit in? Well, like I said all clients have unique variables, meaning at Van Kirk we can work 1-on-1 with a homeowner and design their complete outdoor living space as well as build it. But we also work along side Architects, Engineers, and Developers . In these cases we all are a team working for a Home Builder that is building the home for a client. So we all work together to ensure the concept, structurally, and timing/coordination is all executed perfectly for that homeowner. Can you share the top 3 things homeowners should keep in mind when remodeling or building a new pool? What are some things that can be easily overlooked in that process? I’d say all homeowners need to keep in mind to be upfront with what your over all budget is for a project, this allows for zero time to be wasted . Then I’d remind them to value craftmanship, reputation, and process of the contractor they choose, especially during these strange uncertain times not all contractors are created equally. Also remember you will look at your backyard 70% of the time so make sure it’s aesthetically pleasing to your eyes, so get the extra light, or upgraded deck marble. CLOSING THOUGHT

WHAT MAKES A HOME A HOME?

I

believe the answer to this question is limitless. But as a designer, my goal will always be to design spaces that are representative of the people who hired me, the places that matter to them, and things that are more than things–the memories, the objects that tell a story and evoke an emotion as you make your way through the home. I call these the nouns of design–people, places and things. They are warm and approachable, artistic and unique. And together they create an environment that allows the homeowner to feel connected to the space itself, and more importantly, connected to all the people that walk through the doors, that sleep in the beds, that sit at

the tables, that make up the heartbeat of the home. If I lose sight of those things in the design process, I will miss it. Conversely, when I get the balance of function, beauty and emotion right, that is the magic in making a home feel like a home.
