Florence appeals court sentences Knox to 28 years and Sollecito to 25 Avani Kapur The Florence appeals court has found Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito guilty of the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher. After nearly 12 hours of deliberation by two judges and six lay jurors on January 30, Knox
was handed a prison sentence of 28 years and six months while Sollecito was given 25 years. Two-and-a-half years were added to Knox’s original sentence for her slander of bar owner Patrick Lumumba, whom she initially claimed had committed the crime. The case is now expected to go to the Su-
preme Court. “I am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict,” Knox wrote in a statement. “Having been found innocent before, I expected better from the Italian justice system. The evidence and accusatory theory do not justify a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt
… There has always been a marked lack of evidence.” Lyle Kercher, the victim’s brother, said the length of the legal process had taken its toll on the family: “To lose someone you love so dearly is hard enough, especially in the way she died, but that has been compounded
by the fact that it has gone on for six years and three months,” he said. “It makes it very difficult to start the grieving in earnest.” During the retrial, prosecutors argued that the possible motive for the murder
