FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION Florida Design Naples Edition is our most successful launch ever with nearly 300 pages in our premier edition. With the circulation and editorial almost entirely in Naples and Southwest Florida, our new magazine will be the place to find upscale design, real estate, furnishings and luxury goods. This issue features about 150 pages of editorial showcasing Southwest Florida’s most spectacular residences in Naples most exclusive communities.

Florida Design Naples Edition provides all of the sources that our readers need to create the lifestyle they desire. It is exciting to be a part of the Naples community. I have been coming to Naples since 1978 and have watched it become one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. It has become a world-class destination for affluent tourists and homeowners in the United States and internationally. When the Ritz-Carlton opened, a lot of their guests — including many of America’s top CEOs — enjoyed their vacations so much that they decided to stay. This is not surprising given the beautiful beaches combined with quaint shopping venues and a charming coastal ambiance. Our mission is to showcase Naples finest designers, architects and real estate, and to provide residents with great ideas to enjoy their dream home.

LEGNO BASTONE LEGNO BASTONE WAS FOUNDED IN THE LATE 1800’S, by the same family that runs the company to this very day. Over the years, we have optimized and expanded our production process, but we have never abandoned the age-old European traditions of craftsmanship when it comes to our floors. Every single floor is handcrafted and custom designed; regardless of whether it is a wellappointed home, a castle or a modern minimalist urban apartment, irrespective of whether the address is in Europe or coast to coast in the USA. We proudly admit that quality means everything to us. There are no greater projects than when we are paralleled by those who feel the same way. This is a reason why Legno Bastone works closely with International designers, architects and builders. Like us, they know that the unusually wide and long planks in a Legno Bastone Floor provide for a unique style in the spaces that they design. That is why they are referred to as “Custom Designed Furniture for Your Floor.” The wood behind Legno Bastone Wideplank Flooring: Legno Bastone gets raw wood from the best forests in Europe, which have been nurtured for generations for the benefit of society and the environment. The trees we select are generally over 150 years old and have been meticulously cared for throughout their existence. We make precise uncompromising demands regarding grains, knots and structure. We accept only the best logs, which we use with the greatest respect possible. Any other approach would be an injustice-both to the trees and to all the forest workers who have taken care of them for centuries. 239.206.1898 | Naples, FL | www.legnobastone.com 52 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 1-1

publisher’snote

A NEW NICHE ... Whenever something new enters the marketplace, one question is invariably at the top of people’s minds. How is it different? Creating a new niche means crafting and shaping a product, so that it can offer something completely unique to its community and provide a fresh and exciting mix of content. This new publication will do exactly that. First, and without question, the most compelling differentiator is that this publication will blend both luxury home pictorial layouts with luxury lifestyle content. Making this book a compilation of the best interior design in the region combined with being a very interesting read is one of our main objectives. With stories about design on private yachts and jets, travel to the most beautifully designed destinations, the curation of the best luxury gifts, and a celebration of the individual people in our region who are pushing the envelope in the luxury home industry, our new title will offer its readers a hearty slice of the luxury life in Southwest Florida and beyond. Second, it’s the brand behind this title that is beyond question, the leader in Florida publishing for almost 30 years. Florida Design’s quarterly marquis edition has been Florida’s largest paid newsstand Florida title, and is available at thousands of news outlets, with Time Inc. coordinating the distribution. This special Naples edition, which creates a trifecta of regional titles joining Palm Beach The Island and Miami Home & Decor, will focus on Naples and Southwest Florida’s best design and lifestyle. And it’s being brought to you by a 28-person team, well 29 now, that is fiercely dedicated to maintaining the highest editorial standards and quality of its well-respected brand. I’m honored and humbled to bring you this, our premier issue, and I hope you will find this interesting read as inspiring as it is visually stimulating. And I hope the unique blend of luxury lifestyle content and interior design layouts we’ve assembled here encourages you to work with the talented and esteemed

JULIE KEATEN-REED ARTIST JULIE KEATEN-REED WORKS ON CANVAS using traditional Japanese sumi ink along with watercolors or acrylic paints. Her clean and open style of work has its origin in a diverse series of life experiences—she grew up in the wide-open spaces of Wyoming with the influence of her notable and accomplished artist grandmother, Carley Craig, and spent time living and working in Japan. Keaten-Reed’s work brings a contemporary Western aesthetic to timeless Eastern traditions, creating her own signature style. A credit to Julie’s artistry is her ability to stop, to leave context undefined and ambiguous, allowing viewers to enter each piece, adding their own embellishments, completing their own stories.

A lantern fixture from Currey & Company embraces the vast size of the great room. Here, aged cabinets from Michael Donaldson Antiques and Anthropologie pair with a wooden armchair from Coco House, period table lamps from O’Sullivan and a small vintage lamp from Thomas Jolly to create a sense of history and antiquity. Pillows dressed in patterned textures by Quadrille and Clarence House fashion a layered look.

“WE WANTED AN INVITING TONE WITH FLOW BETWEEN ROOMS — A PLACE WHERE FAMILY AND FRIENDS WOULD FEEL WELCOME,” HOMEOWNER KAREN HELLER SAYS. “SUMMER MADE THAT HAPPEN.”

W

hen Karen and Dan Heller began their search for a perfect family retreat, they

knew Miromar Lakes, Fla., would meet their needs. Coming from the Midwest, the Hellers desired a beach feeling with access to amenities like golf and tennis facilities. When it was time to make their new house feel like home, the couple decided to call in a professional. Summer Thornton, a designer based out of Chicago, was a longtime friend of the homeowners’ son and had previously worked on a project with him. It seemed only natural to include Thornton in this new project as well. The belief in the importance of each client’s goals to tell the story of the their home is a true testament to Thornton’s design prowess. When she completes a project, the space should have a living narrative that reflects the wishes of the homeowner, and that’s exactly what she did here. “We walked in and it just felt like she got it,” Karen says. “It was exactly what was in my heart — what I would have done, but better.”Though the Hellers wanted a beach house, the designer created a space that implied its presence without an overt display. A warming nature flows between rooms, while a

as it takes the interior scheme from light and airy to cozy and welcoming. Upon entry into an intimate foyer that opens to a vast living space with 25-foot-high ceilings, the home’s architectural elements immediately speak to a feeling of antiquity. “The challenge of the great room was to bring it down to a human level,” Thornton says. The large lanterns, extending low from the wood beams, function to scale down such a sizable space. Blue-and-white porcelain jars juxtapose with bold orange accents to introduce the desired beach-like vibes, while bird imagery presents itself through the antique Heron drawings above antique wood cabinetry. Bleached walnut wood lines the wall of the great room behind a custom-designed wooden credenza inspired by colonial woodworking. Framing the television, two vintage photographs depict the shores of early Florida to bring a bit of the outdoors in. Tranquility from the great room carries through to the kitchen, where the neutral palette acts as a base for the intricacies Thornton uses to add complexity to the space. Wood beams across the ceiling juxtapose with the delicate light pendants in the elegant but cozy space. Thornton reinvents a classic look with wooden cabinetry and the hand-painted tile backsplash that adds age and detail. With a kitchen that opens to the

great room and the lanai, this home is designed for the family to come together. “We wanted a place where we would look forward to coming home,” Karen says. Color acts as a conduit for the guest room with its accessible open-air patio. A fourposter bed draped in Calvin Fabrics’ sleek silk from Donghia contributes to the traditional narrative, while sandy hued grass cloth on the walls and a thick textured carpet add layers of comfort to the space. In keeping with her penchant for pushing the edge, Thornton added texture and marble in complementary contrast to the otherwise sterile atmosphere in the master bath.

In the guest room, traditional takes a twist with Williams-Sonoma’s “Chippendale” bamboo bench cushioned in China Seas’ coral-hued print from Quadrille and Gump’s wicker-seated, cane armchair.

Here, a small blue-toned porcelain garden stool embellishes the freestanding tub to carry through with the home’s indoor-outdoor essence. The interior scheme continues onto the lanai, where the Nicaraguan tile accent wall serves as the centerpiece of the open-air space. In addition, the blue and white motif reappears with pillows, porcelain and pottery that enchant with floral accents. Designing their dream home proved to be a wonderful experience for the Hellers. “We really enjoyed the process,” Karen says. “We are a ‘come home and put your feet up’ kind of people. And that’s exactly the ambiance Summer created for us.”

hen homeowners Anne and Chris Policinski from Wayzata, Minn., bought their vacation home in Mediterra, a Naples golf community, they wanted a large house that would live small. To accomplish

that, they hired Pacifica Interior Design, whose work they had seen in a previous remodel. Lead Interior Designer Lusia “Lou” Shafran and Senior Designer, Mark Vanagas, reached out to contractor Michael Diamond to handle the construction aspects of the renovation while they handled all the details of recreating the interiors. “Our first meeting with Chris and Anne was an instant success. We immediately connected and forged a delightful relationship that has lasted beyond the completion of the project,” Shafran says.

The owners love the home’s architecture, its family friendly

layout, and gorgeous landscaped setting. “The garage is covered in creeping fig, and the mature planting makes the house welcoming,” interior designer Lusia Shafran says.

A circular, wrought iron stairway ascends gracefully in

the two-story foyer. Creamy travertine flooring flows into the living room, which features a new, custom-designed carved-limestone fireplace embellished with an ornate mirror from Formations.

“We previously owned a villa, but all of our children are adults and we realized we needed something bigger,” Chris says. “Our three children live in New York, Chicago, and Geneva, and they all love Florida. When they come to visit, they really move in.” With an Old World charm, this 7,232-square-foot home is sited in park-like landscaping with mature trees and overlooks a lake, giving an overall impression that is very soft, subtle and calm. “The home is elegant, but understated — a combination of grandeur and comfort,” Shafran says. Inside, that impression lingers. “When we were looking for our new home, this house had great bones,

and was fairly close to what we wanted,” says Anne, an architect. Upon entry, custom moldings proffer a subtle tone-on-tone dimension in the foyer, where furnishings and accessories are simple. A forged-iron table with a Roman travertine top prominently displays a floral arrangement, the first of many throughout the home. A custom, hanging iron-and-glass lantern adds sparkle, while Visual Comfort sconces light the way up and around a circular stairway dressed with wrought iron. To suit the couple’s needs, Shafran added a sitting room with a morning kitchen at the top of the stairway to create a self-contained space for guests. The living room, with a variety of textures and trims, resonates serenity and restrained splendor. A transitional-style skirted sofa and two lounge chairs clad in a beige cut-velvet complement a pair of wood-framed Alfonso Marina “Bella” chairs. “We thought the rock crystal bowl on the cocktail table would be so simple and elegant, but also exciting,” Shafran says.

An eclectic aura styles the master bedroom, where bedside chests fronted in mirror flank a stunning four-poster bed in a walnut and silver-leaf finish. Photos in a silver frame, glass objects, and crystal lamps shimmer and shine, while a dramatic chandelier in iron and crystal complete the intimate scene. Inspired by travels abroad, Shafran likes to take what she sees and recreate it in an avant-garde way … case in point, the chandelier. “We designed it to give the right focus from the bed and from the entry of the room,” the designer says. “In a five-star Southern Italy hotel, every room was elegantly appointed with special decorative features, such as the chandelier, that were simply placed and not overpowering.” Less is more when the simplicity is in the details. “And there you have it,” Chris says. “We have a home that lives small when we are there, but it’s a large house that lives big for our family and friends.”

MODERN KITCHEN Over the past 30 years UMI president, Donato DiNorcia, has curated one of the world’s most expansive and superior collections of granite, marble, onyx, quartz, Antolini Precioustone and porcelain slabs. ‘ The Source’ for South Florida’s most discerning designers, UMI is often first-to-market with innovative designs, colors, and technology. DiNorcia has worked diligently to perfect UMI’s back-of-house quality control, and front-of-house showroom experience. When asked ‘Why UMI’, designers say, “Customer service. The UMI Consultant listens and personally shows my client and I our options. We’re not left waiting, wondering about inventory, or wandering on our own. We get to see, touch, and feel the actual slab I will use.” UMI’s showrooms are located in Naples, Tampa and Boynton Beach. UMI’s Naples Showroom features three hot innovations for 2017: Pompeii Quartz Exotic Collection, SapienStone porcelain counter tops, and TopZero seamless sinks. When asked why this triad is so sought after, DiNorcia’s succint response captures UMI’s progressive philosophy,

“ Visual Integrity, Practical Luxury, Enduring Beauty ”

POMPEII QUARTZ EXOTIC COLLECTION (top right) provides the natural beauty and linear flow of marble with the durability and maintenance-convenience of quartz.. SAPIENSTONE (top left) is a world leader in porcelain slab counter top design. UV resistant, LEED compliant, outdoor friendly, and extremely durable. TOPZERO Sinks (bottom left) are the world’s only seamless, rimless stainless steel sinks for kitchen and bath. The vanishing edge is aesthetically pleasing and hygienically superior. TopZero sinks complement the sleek style, cleanliness, and durability of Pompeii Quartz and SapienStone. Pompeii Quartz features eco-safe, VOC-free Breton Technology.

Famous for its casual chic French culture, a tropical island set deep in the French West Indies, called St. BarthĂŠlemy, is a singular oasis of white sandy beaches and aquamarine waters, where celebrities and socialites gather to unwind under thatched roofs and swaying palms with the world at their bare feet. Hailing from a French and Swedish heritage, this exotic destination exudes a seductive, sophisticated style and a relaxed yet refined way of life that mirrors its romantic roots. A volcanic island situated on a coral plate amidst a vast array of reefs, caves and canyons, there are very few places that are more chic than continued on 116

Whitewashed walls and West Indian accents imbue oceanfront beach houses and intimate bungalows with warm modernity, while hotel amenities include French and Caribbean restaurants, fashion boutiques and many creative outlets for guests. This small idyllic 8-square-mile island, with its vivid blue sky that blends seamlessly into the turquoise blue sea, brings the beauty and island style out in everyone. The mouth-watering sparkle, unique prints and vibrant colors of the festive fashion draw the eye and capture the spirit. And in season, many famous faces can be seen jaunting off to dine in gourmet restaurants, browse posh boutiques or sun on the white powder beaches of St. Barth. N

St. Barth offers uncrowded beaches, casual but chic designer shopping boutiques and world-class restaurants, many of which are situated right on the beach. 116 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 1-1

A

pioneering event for art and design aficionados and collectors, PAD has been reinventing the notion of eclecticism, anticipating the aesthetic

aspirations of its time. Season after season, it offers an intimate cocoon to those who have made decorative arts and design the core of their collection, driven by passion and heritage. PAD creates an unprecedented dialogue between modern art, historical and contemporary design, and jewelry. This edition gave greater room to Primitive Art and served to highlight the vitality of raising such perspectives. The mind was enlivened and the imagination exhilarated as when one enters a place where the contemporary taste for 20th and 21st-century decorative art is born. n Florida’s Gulf Coast, long before it became the choice destination that it is today, a legendary American architect set ground to build a charming beachfront home. Casita de la Playa, a

Naples, Fla., historic home built in 1926 by renowned resort architect Addison Mizner (1872-1933), is outfitted with a barrel tile roof, smooth stucco exterior and meticulously manicured grounds that extend to the beach. With construction of Casita de la Playa underway, Mizner was also beginning to build in Boca Raton, with such projects as the famous Boca Raton Resort and Club. A true visionary,

the architect left an indelible stamp on Florida’s coast, in particular Palm Beach and Boca Raton. His Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival style continues to be a source of inspiration to architects and land developers today. Laura Parsons, an interior decorator well familiar with Mizner’s work, was given the opportunity to furnish the 7,400-square-foot home and restore it to its original charm. She called on antique store owners Jett Thompson of Jett Thompson Antiques and Interiors, and Lorene Halverson of Antique Connector, to

12/20/16 11:53 AM

LAURA PARSONS’ DESIGN APPROACH WAS TO STAY TRUE TO ADDISON MIZNER’S VISION, ALBEIT LIGHTER IN FEEL AND FUNCTION FOR TODAY’S LIVING. THE LOOK WAS ACHIEVED BY MIXING FURNISHINGS FROM DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS, AS IF THE ORIGINAL INTERIORS HAD EVOLVED SOMEWHAT OVER THE LAST 88 YEARS.

lend a hand with the design. Together, they created an eclectic mix of old and new furnishings that feature a light uncomplicated palette. The front entry opens to a sun-filled foyer, where original terra cotta flooring leads to a stairway inlaid with 1920s tile and a period wrought iron banister. Overhead, a 1920s wrought iron lantern illuminates the space and enhances the natural lighting. Continuing inside, one-half of a 30-foot-wide great room features original oak wood flooring and a sofa designed by Charles Stewart. A vintage Lucite cocktail table lends an unexpected complement to Jett Thompson’s French empire chest, mirror and twin antique Tole Palm Tree lamps that punctuate a corner of the room. Outside on the elongated loggia lined with classic French doors, Gloster’s teak dining table and rattan chairs are perfect for alfresco entertaining and to view the 75-foot pool that was recently redesigned with mosaic tiles set in a wave pattern.

Once the home’s design was complete, it was clear that Parsons had succeeded in capturing the authenticity of Mizner’s architecture with a mix of age related antiques and timeless, compatible new furnishings. “In the case of Casita de la Playa, I think that any architectural renovations should be kept true to the original style of the home,” the designer says. In keeping with that belief, Parsons’ design was faithful to the spirit of Casita de la Playa. If Addison Mizner were alive today, he would undoubtedly agree. N

Expert Q&A

Q

Why is it important to consult with a professional lighting designer when replacing or putting new lighting in your home?

Lighting is currently in the midst of an LED technology revolution, and it is important to understand the way that these changes can affect your home and your lifestyle. So many factors—color temperature, brightness, size, lumens, energy efficiency, the final expense—should be considered when selecting new lighting. Additionally, knowledge of safety and building codes is essential. For example, the 12-foot chandelier (above, left) connects to a 32-foot ceiling and it gives you just as much drama from down below as you get from the second floor. And we fitted it with LEDs so there’s no heat and we shouldn’t have to change a bulb for 20 years. A professional lighting designer takes all of these important factors into consideration, as well as assists with the decorative decisions, so that you are pleased with your investment for years to come.

Q A

My walk-in closet lighting seems to just throw shadows. Can closets actually have decent lighting or is that a dream?

Well, the owner of the closet above wanted it to be very well lit but didn’t want to see the light source. She wanted a crystal chandelier, so we incorporated in-cabinet lighting, under-cabinet lighting, over-cabinet lighting, and 2-inch adjustable LEDs angled toward the clothes. And each one is on it’s own switch, so she can do whatever she wants in there. Chandeliers alone cause tremendous striation because of the crystals, so we increased the lumen level of the LEDs to correct that. So not only can it be done, but it can be done beautifully.

Q A

I’m looking for lighting that will really make my home stand out — something dynamic. What would you suggest?

Light as art becomes a focal point in someone’s home. It’s a dramatic feature that creates depth and interest. Everybody has art on their walls, but when you create it with light, it’s unique to that home. Often they’re small little fixtures, but when you put them in a certain pattern and in a certain quantity, they become more — there’s a synergistic effect. Of course, we tend to use LEDs in these cases because people tend to want to use their light walls all the time, day and night, and it doesn’t create any extra heat or use much wattage. We’re working on one right now that is going straight up a wall to a 28-foot ceiling. But you can do it on an 8-foot ceiling, say in a narrow foyer, to create some interest. It really is dramatic.

Her background includes owning her own lighting showroom, being the “go-to” lighting designer for the largest interior design firms in Southwest Florida and serving as president of the Naples chapter of the Interior Design Society.

nterior designer Joan Simonsen-Hickok’s vision matched one couple’s desire for an airy island lifestyle when designing a Caribbean-inspired home in Naples, Fla. “I knew they wanted an authentic British West Indies

style house,” says Simonsen-Hickok after extensive research of historic Caribbean plantation homes. “They were looking for a casual island elegance, nothing pretentious, but with English refinement.” Homeowners Michael and Patricia Cowhig already lived in this beautiful golf community, but with an ever-growing family, they wanted to build a larger home to accommodate everyone when visiting.

“They purchased a lovely lot that backs onto a nature preserve with a serene water view,” says Simonsen-Hickok, who went to work right away, collaborating closely with architects Randall Stofft and John Cooney, as well as builder Steven Watts. The 8,000-square-foot house features creamy white stucco, varied rooflines and arched windows. Exterior details include stained-cypress rafter tails and navy shutters as well as colonnaded balconies. “Caribbean homes often have several balconies where people sit outside to enjoy the breeze,” the designer says. “True to form, I designed the railings in the Chippendale style.” Simonsen-Hickok also designed the mahogany front door with its fan and side transoms — a nod to English influences and inspired by a door she had admired in London. “This home was never about making a statement,” she says. “It was always about using restraint with a keen attention to detail and a gracious manner.” The home’s straightforward color palette of crisp whites, mild creams, and soft blues is enhanced with rich dark woods. A vaulted beamed ceiling above and a custom, navy-and-white striped, Nepalese wool area rug below define the great room. With an adjacent wine bar, as well as ample seating in the form of comfortable chenille sofas, boldly striped hassocks, and a pair of deep-seated

armchairs, this is a favorite gathering spot for the family to watch TV, play games, or simply relax. Stripes repeat in the curtain panels, flanking a corner that opens up by way of sliding glass doors onto the colonnaded loggia and pool. This architectural plan epitomizes the indoor/outdoor lifestyle of the Caribbean. For more formal entertaining, the dining and living rooms exude relaxed elegance. “My approach to furnishings is simple yet sophisticated,” the designer says. “I strive to create a collected look that evolved over time by blending antiques with reproductions.” In the living room, a fruitwood Marquetry butler’s cocktail table is paired with an English shelter sofa. In the dining room, white carved-back chairs surround a double pedestal, dark mahogany dining table. “The dining chairs are a subtle nod to an 18th-century English Manor House,” Simonsen-Hickok says.

The living room exudes a genteel elegance styled with Hickory Chair’s white sofa

LESTER HOLLAND’S CUSTOM FURNITURE COMES TO LIFE WITH THE BREAKFAST AREA’S BANQUETTE AND TABLE DESIGNED BY JOAN SIMONSEN-HICKOK. DURALEE’S BOLD STRIPES LINE THE BENCH, WHILE CANED SIDE CHAIRS BY GRANGE COMPLETE THE SETTING.

A well-orchestrated dance between white and dark accents continues throughout the house in perfect complement to the striking blue hues. The all-white kitchen has dark walnut molding set around a tongue-in-groove painted white ceiling. Walnut also surrounds a window above a farmhouse style sink. “My clients enjoy entertaining and often serve big family meals,” says the designer, who sourced the elusive, indestructible White Princess granite in a large slab for the island. An eat-in banquette, custom-designed by Simonsen-Hickok, bridges the kitchen and sitting areas in the great room. It’s large enough to seat all of the grandchildren, whether for a meal or a game. The seat cushions are clad in a sturdy indoor-outdoor striped fabric surrounding the custom trestle table. The open-air spaces offer multiple areas to lounge, dine al fresco or sunbathe. Most striking is the pool, which was designed to reflect the islands with its lush landscaping. “In the Caribbean, you live outdoors 90 percent of the time, quite comparable to the Southwest Florida lifestyle. That’s the way we designed this home ... there’s a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors,” the designer says. “Our goal was to create a genteel, but elegant retreat that gives this family a comfortable home to enjoy for years to come.”

hen builder Matt Knauf teamed with designers Leslie Sherman, Tatum Johansson and Michael Hayes to create this 6,786-square-foot spec home in Naples, Fla., they wanted to

design a home that was casual, comfortable and elegant with a touch of coastal influence. “We were interested in building a clean coastal home with lighter finishes for walls and floors, and lighter stained wood elements outdoors,” Knauf says. “We wanted the finishes and design to be unique

compared to some of the other homes in Naples.” From the beginning, Knauf liked this property because of its very private culde-sac location that was ideal for luscious landscaping. Working with the design team was a perfect collaboration from start to finish. “As a designer, it was a dream to be able to choose whatever we wanted, without limitations, in order to create a unique and appealing home for our clients,” Johansson says. New owners Marina and Ric Dillon fell instantly in love with the home’s sophisticated coastal look, lush garden views through large windows, and the expansive outdoor living space that was ideal for their dogs to run around. “We loved Calusa Bay Design’s work in other homes, so when we saw the design for this home we were very happy,” Marina says. The design of the home embodies elegant yet casual indoor-outdoor living with a neutral color palette, and pops of light blue and aqua hues, chosen to convey a coastal feel. Light-colored Legno

Bastone wide-plank oak flooring and walls in a soothing pale bluegray, enhance the beautiful colors and textures of the furnishings. Outdoors, the beautifully landscaped pool and spa is bordered by shellstone decking. “We wanted to bring landscaping into the pool and deck, so we surrounded the pool with Coconut Palms and placed Montgomery Palms on the deck,” Knauf says. “The huge backyard space is the most intriguing part of the home.” The lanai offers stunning views of the landscaped pool and is warmed by a stained cypress tongue-and-groove ceiling. The soaring 14-foot stone fireplace is the focal point of the space that features a custom outdoor sectional and woven armchairs from Calusa Bay Design, perfect for lounging. “This amazing outdoor living space is what makes this home so unique,” Johansson says. Behind French doors, the living room shines with a shell and crystal chandelier, a pair of leather chesterfield sofas and a pair of custom wingback chairs. The dining room is a bright open space with a view of the tropical oasis through sliding glass doors. Unique chandeliers from Currey & Co. cast a soft glow over a custom trestle dining table in an ivory finish. It is lined with side chairs upholstered in a textured blue hue and flanked with linen skirted, winged host chairs. A wall of custom oak cabinetry is stained to resemble driftwood and echoes the home’s coastal theme.

The room’s look is completed by a whimsical chandelier in a silver leaf finish that becomes the focal point above the kitchen island. The spacious master bath features views of the private gardens through 10-foot-tall windows and is centered by a white, free-standing cast iron tub in a geometric shape. The luxurious shower is designed with glass walls and his-and-hers showerheads. “With lots of light bringing the outside in, this is another wonderful space,” Knauf says.

A large Curry & Co. chandelier shines on the serene master bedroom created with soft colors and neutral tones. At the foot of Bernhardt Interior’s four-poster bed is an upholstered bench with a wood finish from Dovetail Furniture. Atop a taupe chaise sits Maggie, Sherman’s adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

The tranquil master suite is bathed in natural light by large floor-to-ceiling windows to take advantage of the gorgeous outdoor scene. The four-poster bed is wrapped in luxurious soft colored bedding with a calming touch of blue and is accompanied by beautiful two-tone bedside chests. “Everything is coordinated, there is no mix and match,” the builder says. A hand-knotted, stonecolored area rug grounds the space in comfort. A harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, the home’s seamless flow from room to room, and its light-filled spaces and spa-like pool area, make the most of fine Naples living. “This house is a relaxing and beautiful winter retreat,” Marina says. “We are so proud to have our northern guests visit us here.”

hough others applied, only one design team was chosen. Interior designers Rhett Josey and Wilfredo Emanuel of Clive | Daniel

Home fondly remember the moment the firm was chosen to design the interiors for the new Naples residence of William and Stephanie George Lenchinsky. “While the other designers had arrived with layouts and sketches, we came with nothing,” Josey says. “I simply said we needed to get to know them, their ideas and the life they wanted to live here.” A few minutes later, they heard Mrs. Lenchinsky, former president of both

InStyle and People magazines, say the words, “Hire this one!” And the successful collaboration had begun. The 4,400-square-foot former spec house, built by Milestone Development, sits on a beautiful man-made lake. “I don’t consider any of my homes ‘spec houses,’” builder Brian Beaudet says. “I build every one as if it was for myself ... and then someone else gets to enjoy it.” Though the couple loves the Naples area and has family close, there was absolutely no rush — no time frame to finish the project — since the owners have other homes in New Jersey and New York City. “It was very exciting to

have the opportunity for us to finally stretch the limits of what luxury means in the home,” Emanuel says. “Truly a collaborative effort, this contemporary design was refreshing.” The design duo began the design process with a neutral interior scheme of taupe, gray, cream and soft brown hues … followed by the magic that comes with luxurious textures and sparkling surfaces. “The material selections were particularly stimulating in that we had carte blanche to select fabrics like leather and suede that the couple was used to having in their northern homes,” Emanuel says. “We wanted to use natural finishes along with clean contemporary furnishings to complete a style we call coastal contemporary,” homeowner Bill Lenchinsky says. Filled with natural light from both the front vestibule’s entrance and the expanse of glass overlooking the pool, the living room is awash with walnut, oak, and the sparkle of chrome, glass and metallic surfaces that make color only an occasional must. Dark walnut provides the backdrop

for the television, while white angular shelving showcases the couple’s dramatic collection of glass. But leave it to nature to become the room’s pièce de résistance. A spectacular slab of cypress, rescued from its resting place beneath a Sarasota bayou, appears as a work of art perched upon pedestal legs. Adding to the whole, a wine room, formal dining room and the kitchen all flow outward, but remain near the central living space. a stony Jackson Pollock mélange, while the chairs, wrapped in Adriana Hoyos’ shimmering fabric and seated in leather, show off their woody sides in perfect complement to the table’s intricate base. “The wide, double-seat bench in velvet softens the corner and injects a surprise,” Josey says. And yet, sitting is just one option when dining can take place in other spots as well. The kitchen’s soft white allows the double prep islands to standout like furnishings. Topped in quartz and quartzite, surfaces sparkle against the breakfast banquette’s table of hand-blown glass and Kolkka’s metal base. A reminder of the sea, the master suite has its headboard wall lined in exclusive mother-of-pearl wall covering from Candice Olson. A dramatic overhead fixture of champagne crystal and amethyst fobs from Corbett Lighting sparkles above. The nearby study is packed with simple pleasures: a milk glass and metal chandelier; a gray ergonomic chair and ottoman; and floated cabinetry and shelves. Gulf Coast appeal is on full display from the patio. Summer shade when it’s hot and a winter fire for when it’s chilly, not a comfort left to chance. “Rhett and Wilfredo made this nearly two-year long adventure exciting every step of the way,” Bill says. “Creating this home was a true labor of love.” N

aking risks, avoiding trends and incorporating life into art defines interior designer Janet Bilotti’s

mantra. That’s just what the designer and architect did as they drew inspiration from their clients’ Far East travels to create a timeless interior scheme for this 5,000-square-foot waterfront home on Sanibel Island, Fla. Subtle, earthy and open, Bilotti integrated warm, natural materials to create clean lines and an inviting atmosphere. Over-scaled pieces define the living space, giving it a cozy feeling that provides comfort for the whole family. Bilotti used outdoor acrylic fabric to cover the sofas and additional seating to make a low maintenance environment. Here, the organic looking cocktail table adds an element of sophistication, while framed floor-to-ceiling windows offer an uninhibited view of the outdoors. The homeowner’s growing art collection was a driving force in the otherwise clean design. Artwork decorates the various walls and tables in the living room, adding depth to the neutral palette. Its beauty speaks for itself, from the sculpture, Rejoice, to the Chola piece from South India of Adavallan Nataraja serenely displayed in the wall niche. Carefully curated, the designer added the eclectic pieces to complicate the space’s simplicity.

Janet Bilotti_Snell_NP_new final 122016.indd 3

12/20/16 4:30 PM

Bilotti wanted the eyes to be immediately drawn to the most natural element of beauty, the outdoors. “The bay is the first view,” the designer says. “We didn’t want to design an entry that would compete with the water. This space truly expresses the idea that less is more.” Evoking earthy emotion, natural distressed oak wood flooring leads the way into the open great room. “The goal is to have this open space incorporate the kitchen, dining area and living room,” Bilotti says. “The natural theme continues to flow here to exude the Zen-like feeling these homeowners desired.” Similar to the living room, Bilotti oversized the center island to increase seating space and add complexity. “When I’m finished with a project I want it to be better than it would have been if I was not involved,” Bilotti says. “Interiors should reflect the owner and pay homage to the architecture.” Working on this project allowed the designer to incorporate different layers of the couple’s lifestyle, making it a family-friendly, peaceful island retreat. “Good design is intangible and long-lasting … that’s what makes a space so special,” she says.

his unique one-acre parcel, with 170 feet of bay frontage situated on scenic Man-of-War

Cove in Naples’ prestigious Port Royal, offered the perfect setting to build a 9,500-square-foot West Indies-style home with a contemporary transitional twist. The clients desired an Old Florida tropical style, with glorious outdoor spaces and elegant, young-at-heart interiors built with the finest materials. With these factors in mind, the design team of interior designers Lisa Ficarra and Molly Grup, architects Randall Stofft and partner John Cooney, and builder Travis Smith, worked together to create an extraordinary home. An ode to Florida’s tropical climate, as well as a nod to the West Indies, the home invites gracious indoor-outdoor living. The clients gave the team a spectacular palette and a very large site to work with. “West Indies is the style of preference here, but we thought there was a calling for contemporary and transitional as well, so we combined a cleaner contemporary home with West Indies style,” Cooney says. The home is equipped with traditional detailing such as a smooth stucco facade, a simulated clay tile roof, and tongue-and-grove soffits with cypress corbels,

but that’s as far as it goes. “Other elements you’d see in a West Indies home are not found here,”

the architect says. On the balcony in the back, for example, Cooney went with aluminum and glass in lieu of traditional pickets. Also, large expanses of glass, rather than proportionally punched window openings, convey a more contemporary flair. Another unique twist, he chose to design the home with large formal rooms, a returning trend, but the limestone flooring throughout suggests the feel of an open floor plan. The essence of this quality detailing flows through to the inside. Ficarra and Grup let natural textures guide them in creating a simple, elegant interior design. In the living room, a custom stacked-stone accent wall with a ribbon firebox contrasts with the dark-stained oak step ceiling. “I designed the fireplace wall to be asymmetrical, so there would be room for the tall sculpture on the right side,” Ficarra says. ONE DESIGNER CREATES A CONTEMPORARY AESTHETIC WITH VIBRANT USE OF COLOR FOR THE OWNERS OF A CONDO IN THE SEASONS AT NAPLES CAY THAT FACES THE GULF OF MEXICO

fter spending winters in Key Biscayne, this Canadian couple bought an 18th-floor condominium in The Seasons at Naples Cay with mesmerizing views of the Gulf of Mexico in Naples, Fla. “I think

my clients were drawn to the relaxed vibe of Naples,” interior designer Kira Krümm says. “They wanted a winter residence to enjoy with their family and friends.” Upon admiring Krümm’s work with a similar vista featuring large circular windows on the cover of a magazine, the couple chose the designer to style their 7,500-square-foot winter retreat wrapped with

sweeping Gulf vistas on view through expansive walls of glass in all of the main living areas. “I like to create serene and calm interiors that reflect the tranquility of Southwest Florida,” Krümm says. “My clients brought a contemporary Miami aesthetic from their previous residence and we adapted it to work for their new home in Naples. So, I kept it light and coastal white using vibrant pops of color.” With inspiration from the Gulf waters and Southwest Florida’s tropical setting, Krümm kept the design of the grand salon open, clean and sensitive to its surrounding architecture to elicit a sense of floating at

sea. The timeless, classic background works well with white-leather sofas Krümm paired with leather-clad lounge chairs bathed in a light “hearts-of-palm” hue. Nearby, the grand salon’s intimate built-in bar area and cocktail lounge is a favorite spot to socialize at night when its design comes alive. Stainless pendants cast a shimmering glow over the bar area backed with an exquisite slab of marble above built-in cabinetry. A mirror that conceals a hidden television continues the contemporary theme. “I used striped fabric on a pair of comfortable swivel chairs here because the pattern and texture add to the personality of the home,” the designer says. The polished sheen of sleek, Italian marble flooring flows from the grand salon into the dreamy dining room. Here, an oceanic palette of aqua, light blue, green, white and crystal becomes a masterpiece of tropical elegance and sophistication. Foregoing traditional window treatments, Krümm used only hidden motorized coverings. “I kept the room clean and simple with a splash of color in the ceiling treatment and art by photographer Brian Goodman that reflects the serene view outside,” she says. Casual elegance defines the breakfast area awash in color and texture from the copper-hued walls to the four side chairs wrapped in Kravet’s lively geometric pattern. “The couple uses this room the most,” says Krümm, who finished the panoramic waterfront space with a casual glass and metal chandelier. Both the kitchen and family room were completely renovated for functional and aesthetic reasons. The couple wanted a break from the original dark and traditional interior of that space which was common in such condominiums built with a Mediterranean theme

Waves of oceanic hues draw the eyes up and around the formal dining room. Here, Arteriors’ crystal chandelier shimmers above the glass-topped dining table lined with aqua-colored chairs that seat eight. Brian Goodman’s photography echoes the Gulf view beyond.

The breakfast area’s vibrant coastal setting keeps the couple’s desire for a contemporary aesthetic. Designmaster’s creamy hued “Miami” arm chairs from Angela Fine Furnishings host family and friends around Tritter Feefer’s oval “San Blas” dining table with its polished steel base.

in 2002. More transitional than contemporary, the kitchen now sports new doors, hardware and beveled low-edge cabinetry. The designer also added new lighting to modernize the look. Styled for comfort, the family room’s custom-designed sectional sofa and a pair of deep-seated lounge chairs shape a conversation grouping set amidst stunning panoramic water views. Glass-topped cocktail tables, each with a gunmetal finish, keep the clean-lined theme. A sense of seaside tranquility washes over the master bedroom with its sea-blue walls and hand-painted aqua metallic paneling. Refreshing furnishings and accessories perfect the tropical feel. “Even the area rug, which was hand loomed of banana silk in Nepal, adds beauty and understated coastal elegance to this waterfront sanctuary,” the designer says. Krümm was delighted to create something different for the couple that reflects their personality and lifestyle. “These clients have exquisite taste and allowed us to create a unique interior of high quality and the finest workmanship,” she says.

effrey Fisher and Deborah Fisher, a brother and sister design team, tackled a challenge when they designed Deborah’s own residence in sunny Naples, Fla. Surrounded by beautiful flora, the 4,200-square-foot

property aims to capture some of that beauty indoors. From an abundance of natural light to a mix of modern and vintage furnishings, Deborah’s home is a space carefully curated for comfort and quality. “Design is in your DNA,” Jeffrey says. “Fashion, interiors and gardens all require the same basic design principles.” Shifting focus from fashion design in his early years to home interiors following his successful role as host of W Network’s Arresting Design, Jeffrey partnered with his sister Deborah, a former advertising

executive, to launch their design firm now based in Toronto, Ontario. When Deborah approached him about her new Naples residence they knew every item that made it into the home needed to be special in some way. “We didn’t want filler pieces just taking up space,” Jeffrey says. Additionally, they chose the color purple to act as a unifying element. The vividness and frequency of the hue varies from space to space, but its presence, regardless of quantity, creates flow between rooms. Immediately upon entry, Fortuny’s silk chandelier draws the eyes up and around the expansive space. Set against a crisp white backdrop, the living room exemplifies a “less is more” concept with dashes of purple

found in Wendell Castle’s eggplant-hued cocktail tables and the dome-like wall piece by Colombian artist, Federico Uribe, which is made out of hundreds of red, orange and purple colored pencils. “If for whatever reason my sister and her husband wanted to gift me anything from their home,” Jeffrey says, “I might pick the Uribe colored pencils.” Fluidity continues between the living room and the study with matching vintage armchairs in both rooms. The chairs in the study, however, are surrounded by various shades of purple that define the entire space. A custom-designed console table fits perfectly between shelving filled with specifically sourced books with purple spines that add dimension and vibrancy. Dubbed the “conversation room,” Deborah and her husband relax, sip a glass of wine, and catch up after a long day. Lined with white cabinetry, the kitchen is anchored with a dark gray island that adds warmth to the otherwise cool culinary space. Though modeled after a 1970s design, the set of chandeliers provide a contemporary feel. Glass doors slide open to the loggia, where the contemporary design of furnishings from the classic 1966 Richard Schultz Collection is perfect for the limited space. “The collection is manufactured today by Florence Knoll,” Jeffrey says, “and it’s precisely as it was [manufactured] in the 1960s.” It is specifically intended to withstand Florida’s salty climate. From the purple “conversation room” to the white kitchen, and beyond to the loggia and shimmering pool, color weaves its way through the very foundation of the home to complement its modern aura. The natural beauty of the home’s location is reflected in the design. “It’s a warm, livable, contemporary home that pays homage to the design classics of the past,” Jeffrey says.

UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE STEALS THE SHOW Calusa Bay Design’s style is in high demand. PHOTOGRAPHY BY: AMBER FREDERIKSEN

The Calusa Bay team.

N

NAPLES ARCHITECTURAL AND DESIGN STYLE IS CHANGING. Gone are the Mediterranean castles that once were featured on every corner. Today a fresh, clean, simpler style dominates

the Naples new construction marketplace. Influenced by British West Indies architecture, today’s new homes are serene and sophisticated, with an understated elegance. Calusa Bay Design has captured this trend beautifully, interpreting the fresh, breezy, coastal style that homeowners today want into their own blend of coastal chic design. Calusa Bay Design is not your typical Naples design firm. The company was born out of

the Developer’s need for beautiful, tasteful, coastal interiors to perfectly complement the multi-million dollar homes for which Calusa Bay Development is known. And complement these homes they have, influencing all aspects of the home’s design from start to finish. With a hand in everything from collaborating on architectural plans, to specifying interior and exterior finishes, trim, and flooring, to designing cabinetry, scaling furniture and specifying stonework…make no mistake, Calusa Bay Design knows how to turn out a spectacular home. Elegant design detail is highlighted against the night sky.

Principal Leslie Sherman is credited with numerous multimillion dollar homes along Naples Gold Coast. Working on only a few homes a year, her signature style clearly stands out.

“My goal is to create beautiful and unique homes, designed for living.” says Sherman. “I have an amazing, talented team whose passion is to create simply fabulous homes”. Key to Sherman’s team is general contractor Matt Knauf, Knauf Koenig Group. The pair has worked together on all of Sherman’s new construction projects. Although each home is unique, her homes all bear a striking architectural similarity, a rustic contemporary style that is both unique and refreshing. Design Director Debra Lysy and Interior Designer Tatum Johansson create the stunning interiors in Sherman’s homes. Years of design experience combined with excellent taste and unwavering attention to detail have produced a trail of satisfied clients, and 2017 promises more of the same. Calusa Bay’s breathtaking new homes have been attracting a lot of attention in Pelican Bay. Open houses produce numerous inquiries from prospective clients who would like the teams ‘magic touch’ applied to their own home. As a result, Calusa Bay Design has expanded to provide customized project management and interior design services to a limited number of outside clients. The goal is quality, not quantity, a mantra which Sherman has maintained throughout her career. Quality and creativity are clearly evident in every project, from the architectural design by Stofft Cooney Architects, to the unique finishes, to the stunning interior furnishings. Calusa Bay Design is currently working on a few select new construction projects in Pelican Bay. After previewing design plans for these homes, it’s evident that for Season 2017, Calusa Bay Design will once again Steal the Show. For more information, or to schedule a private consultation with Calusa Bay Design, please call Leslie Sherman at 239.537.2949 or visit CalusaBayNaples.com. initial view of the site was enough to set the wheels of inspiration moving. “When you walk toward the rear of the site and see the beautiful Gulf of Mexico and all of that bright, white sand, it inspires you very quickly,” Cooney says. We’d been coming down here to vacation for about 25 years,” David says. “At the time, we were living in a traditional, arts and crafts-style home in Long Island, N.Y., on a natural wildlife preserve with views of Oyster Bay Harbor. We loved living on the water with all of the wildlife surrounding us. Spending time on Captiva, with its proximity to the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge along with the island’s natural beauty, drew us to living here full time.”

and Anthony Baratta designed the foyer’s stairway runner, fabricated by Stark, to feature a white, woven border that emulates waves. The wall mural, painted by artist Eric Beare, serves as the designers’ modern perception of PostImpressionist painter Paul Gauguin.

When David retired from a career on Wall Street, the Georges relocated to their island retreat, and contacted Cooney and Stofft to provide the full architectural design, site planning and interior architectural detailing. Cooney designed an Old Florida-style compound that includes a 6,700-square-foot main house; a 2,400-square-foot, two-story guesthouse with two full living/bedroom suites; and a gazebo that was built on an additional piece of property. Interpreting a grand-scaled, modernized version of a true Florida cottage required the architecture team to rethink design elements. To this end, the home features a new use of expanse glass revealing panoramic vistas. An exterior palette with a standing seam metal roof references Old Florida, while outdoor pavilions are executed with a high-tech materials palette that mimics the style’s authentic qualities. Plank siding recalls traditional cedar clapboard siding, and outdoor railings of aluminum extrusions exhibit the proportions of early wooden railings. For the interior scheme, the Georges turned to the same design team they had used for their home on Long Island — William Diamond and Anthony Baratta. “We’ve always loved their enthusiasm for color

and ability to personalize each project with great style,” Verna says. The two devised an exuberant plan that embraces the Georges’ “fearless design aesthetic and desire for strong color,” Diamond says. “Verna and David had great confidence in our abilities and gave us a free hand but were intimately involved in every aspect, and encouraged us to punch up the colors even more than we suggested.” The home’s signature turquoise, white and chartreuse color scheme initiates in the living room, where an elongated sofa emulates the iconic styles of Dorothy Draper and Frances Elkins, and four armchairs covered in an specially commissioned harlequin-patterned fabric radiate around a white-lacquered, Deco-esque cocktail table. In the dining room, a latticework installation answers to Verna’s request for something different. “Artist and furniture maker Paul Flammang sketched our design,

measured the room once, returned to his workshop in Connecticut and built the entire room,” Diamond says. “When it was complete, he trucked it down to Florida and installed it piece by piece.” The kitchen, which Diamond and Baratta designed from scratch, continues the home’s turquoise, white and chartreuse palette, and overlooks the gazebo and koi pond outside. A circular theme seen in the kitchen recurs in the breakfast room with a table that ascends from the center of a round area rug that emulates the design of an Emilio Pucci-inspired scarf. Turquoise-hued Italian linen by Scalamandré wraps the walls of the family room, complementing tropical shades of leafy green and sunny yellow. A carpet design that Diamond calls “paisley gone wild” served as the muse for the room’s whimsical decor, while wicker furniture covered in a Hawaiian floral fabric completes the garden atmosphere. Because the Georges were willing to push the envelope, the design and architecture team were able to depart from the expected. “The end product here,” Baratta says, “is a tribute to the homeowners’ passion and steadfast resolve for a home that is exciting, unique and wondrous.”

he Estuary at Grey Oaks is one of Naples, Fla.’s most prestigious

resort-style luxury communities boasting world championship golf and tennis. This turnkey model, situated in a bucolic natural landscape, is an expansive transitional style home created with lavish attention to detail. The community’s developer chose recognized architects Randall Stofft and John Cooney to create an inspiring structure, and well-known interior designers Troy Beasley and Kim Grimes to design a home that would be both irresistible and very inviting.

Through the great room’s sliding glass doors, the patio can be viewed while seated on a sectional sofa adorned with floral accent pillows from Duralee. “Even when you are inside, you feel like you are outside,” interior designer Troy Beasley says.

With a golf course as one of the main attractions, the two-story 6,698 square feet home was built with spaces that take advantage of the view. “I wanted to create a resort-style home with a pool, spa and fire-pit that all contribute to the atmosphere,” Cooney says. The rear exterior of the home is just that — with a very special private suite for overnight guests. From the white stucco exterior to the gray slate pitched roof and cypress corbel overhead, the home makes a clean and sophisticated impression.

In the great room, a variety of styles and fabrics meld together to create a signature look of sophistication. Designed for comfort, a sectional sofa is clad in soft chenille with a slight tone-on-tone fabric. Juxtaposed are two club chairs from Bernhardt — more structured and classic in nature with their tapered walnut legs and patterned fabric. Shades of bronze are infused throughout the home. “It mixes well with all the wood variations,” Beasley says. An antique bronze finish chandelier ornamented with

mini tapered lampshades hangs from stained ceiling beams that lend a rustic feel. Wide oak-stained plank flooring, and a natural cream and tan wool area rug intertwine gracefully. The clubroom is designed for both work and entertaining. “It’s a sizable room that is not just for work or study,” Beasley says. The Larson sofa from Heritage Home Group has Mid-century modern appeal with its straight edges, tailored frame and tufted back. Blue-chenille wingback chairs add color and a sculptural cocktail table of exotic wood captures the attention as the focal point of the room. “I like to pair structural pieces with organic elements,” Beasley says. A pair of painted-aluminum pendants from YLighting are grand enough to illuminate the large space.

THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS LUXURIOUS HOME’S DESIGN IS WARM, SOFT AND COMFORTABLE — A LOOK THAT IS SOOTHING TO THE SOUL.

In the dining room, a walnut table seats 10 comfortably surrounded by simple yet elegant side chairs that are swathed in a light cream, soft-brushed cotton, while host chairs offer diversity clad in fully skirted, tan-and-cream-striped fabric. A rich mahogany buffet faced with a pearlized shell boasts a starburst design that lends an iridescent effect. Above it, a double-edge mirror from Century Furniture, set in a walnut encased inlay, appears to expand the space. The master bedroom, created with a variety of textures and neutral fabrics, offers striking pool and golf course views. A bed with a soft, tan-linen headboard and a cushioned iron bench at the foot help to create a comfortable retreat beneath a bronze lampshade chandelier from Visual Comfort. A patterned wool area rug from Rosecore grounds the space in comfort. “There is a nice contrast between the light tones and dark tones throughout the home,” Beasley says. When all was said and done, the design team succeeded in creating a very special place with inspired interiors … one that someone will undoubtedly be proud to call home.

aples-based interior designer and developer Karen Larson assessed what today’s buyer wanted in an upscale beach

home and then commissioned architect Matthew Kragh to design this spec home in Old Naples just one block off of the Gulf of Mexico. “Buyers today expect the best of everything,” says Larson, who divides her time between Naples and Chicago. “They want to walk inside and see the home completely finished.” The large, uniquely shaped lot was a challenge for Kragh, who has worked on many homes with Larson. He designed the two-story, 3,582-square-foot corner home with a beautifully landscaped front and rooms that take full advantage of striking views. “Most views from the rooms are of the back which is spectacular with its sparkling pool and lush courtyard,” the architect says. The exterior of this sophisticated cottage-style home exudes Old Florida charm with a craftsman approach utilizing unique eaves and architectural brackets. “I like working with Karen because her vision is to recreate Old Florida using new construction,” Kragh says. “We respect Old Florida yet put our own twist on making the space unique, modern and livable.” To design the large open great room, which is comprised of the living area, kitchen and dining area, the designer opted to keep everything light and neutral accented with the color blue for chairs,

decorative pillows and accessories. “This is really the first ‘blue’ house that I have done,” Larson says. “I used the color because it emulates an island vibe.” In the living area, a herringbone marble wall tiled in a blend of gray, white, cream and blue hues allows the backlit wine wall in the bar area to shine through. Above, the tongue-and-groove ceiling provides a beachside feel along with a white leather sofa and mirrored cocktail table topped with a shapely white seashell. The bright white kitchen features an uncluttered island space. “I try not to put the sink and stove on the island,” says Larson of her minimalist kitchen concept. Custom white cabinetry and dark floating shelving in high gloss mahogany, showcase collectibles that echo the colors of the sea and sky. The pool can be viewed from tall, sliding glass doors.

The kitchen flows into the dining area, a versatile space that can be used for formal gatherings or family dining. A rich wood table with a shiny silver base, from Robb & Stucky, and white-leather chairs from St-Tropez Home, create a sophisticated yet casual look. “When you open the doors from the main living areas to the pool and courtyard, the feel of the home is sheer perfection,” Larson says.

estled within the private neighborhood of Port Royal in Naples, there is an enclave named Little Harbour that features 32 beautiful homes on 25 acres. A gated, single-family residential

Due to a large amount of glass facing south, the house has a bright airy feel throughout and conveys the essence of a seaside retreat. “Intricate cypress wood details such as kerf corner columns, decorative rafter tails and beams together with Bahamian blue shutters, balance the white exterior of the house,” Almeida says. Only top quality construction is evident throughout the home thanks to the project management of builders Ryan Benson and Evan Weaver. The extensive details, materials, and systems within the house include a whole house water filtration system, Sub-Zero, Wolf, Bosch, and Miele appliances and Harmon Hinge doors. Concrete construction throughout provides the most solid foundation to manage Florida’s

elements. The windows are hurricane rated and fully waterproofed, and the rear terraces are enclosed with automated shutters and screens. A consistent visual throughout the home is the stunning, bleached-black walnut wood flooring. “The designer requested a Legno Bastone floor which is created and fabricated to age gracefully, and requires the least amount of maintenance,” Legno Bastone owner Tiffany Guido says. “It is fabricated by the hands of European artisans from French white oak.” Energy efficiency was also a top consideration. “The fully enclosed attic, insulated glass and professionally engineered mechanical systems all achieve that goal,” Benson says. “We were fortunate to be able to construct this home with a client who appreciated quality and style, and to work with a design team that was second to none,” he says. This was the first time builders Benson and Weaver had collaborated with interior designer Berry, and they achieved results that made both of their companies proud. There were several meetings with both teams. They worked side-by-side with the architects combining the exterior details with the interior styling to create a cohesive design. “The

directives were to keep the interior design ‘beach casual,’ while maintaining a modern yet transitional space,” the designer says. The home’s coastal chic vibe is best illustrated in the design of the spectacular kitchen, dining room, and family room spaces, which are central to the home and most dramatic in regard to the finish details. The kitchen cabinetry features Shaker-style uppers and slated wood bases, which keep the overall style casual yet still elegant. The master bath’s tile juxtaposed with built-in wood cabinetry is one of Berry’s favorite design details, as is the pool’s mosaic tile. All these elements play off the water views and capitalize on the homeowners’ affinity for cool, beachy colors on the inside and out. Contemporary and Bermudian are the only two architectural styles accepted in Little Harbour’s stringent architectural code. The design team worked closely together to follow these guidelines. With a 5,000-square-foot maximum under air limit for homes in Little Harbour, the layout had to be efficient. The final result was a huge success, illustrating just how rewarding it was for all involved in the project. “Everyone worked closely with us to understand our style of living and our tastes which resulted in this beautiful home,” the owner says.
