A SEASON OF GIVING We are excited to bring in the new year with the winter issue of Florida Design’s
Palm Beach The Island. Now with the social season in full swing, we aren’t missing a beat as we highlight a whirlwind of charity events and holiday galas. And in keeping with the season, we also focus on the world-class art shows as collectors and connoisseurs from around the globe travel to the sunny shores of South Florida. Inside these pages, we highlight some of the best winter events Palm Beach has to offer as Olympians and top U.S. show jumpers compete at the Winter Equestrian Festival, world-class champions hold court at the Palm Beach International Polo Club, and the always entertaining Bryan Brothers return to the 2017 Delray Beach Open tennis championships. You may want to take a look at our Valentine gift ideas for that special someone in your life, or peruse through our luxury travel section for the ultimate in winter escapes from the French Riviera to the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. On behalf of the entire staff at Florida Design’s Palm Beach The Island, we wish you a happy and healthy 2017. i

ON THE ISLAND
PALM BEACH REPORTS THE NEW WINTER WHITE HOUSE Quintessential New Yorkers, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will in all likelihood remain snowbirds wintering on the Island in their tropical castle The Mar-a-Lago Club, hailed as the new winter White House. Following in the historical footsteps of the Kennedy’s who enjoyed their Palm Beach compound on the Island’s North End as a family retreat for decades, it seems unlikely that the glamorous Trumps will vacation any time soon at Camp David, the preferred presidential retreat in the woodsy hills of Maryland. Years ago, President Trump procured Mar-a-Lago for nearly $10 million from its original owner, cereal heiress Marjorie Meriweather Post, who would no doubt be delighted as she had hoped it would one day serve as a winter retreat for presidents. The Trumps and their 10-year-old son Barron occupy a residential area of the opulent club, and his other children stay in nearby cabanas situated on the 118-room, 20-acre waterfront property surrounded by secret service that are blended discreetly throughout the landscape. But the seaside location will not be without its security concerns which would be paramount to the President and his family’s safety, not to mention the club’s guests who say they are happy to go through a security check if it keeps everyone safe. With the eyes of the world now on Palm Beach, Island tourism and real estate will no doubt soar. Photograph of The Mar-a-Lago Club, above, courtesy of The Mar-a-Lago Club. L
Living in the shadow of a famous relative is never easy when trying to establish your own identity in the beauty and fashion industry. But for celebrated model, fashion blogger and skin care business owner Jaimie Hilfiger, it doesn’t hurt to be the niece of iconic international designer Tommy Hilfiger. She grew up with a front row seat to her uncle’s runway shows, brushed shoulders with the likes of Britney Spears, Kate Hudson and Ivanka Trump, and landed a coveted internship in JLo’s showroom while still in college at the University of Central Florida. This savvy entrepreneur, who is adept at turning heads with her flawless beauty, divides her time between New York and South Florida, blogging on the latest fashion trends and perfecting her capsule skin care collection that bears her name, launched last year in collaboration with La Curcio. An Island girl at heart who enjoys frequenting its social scene and golden beaches, Jaimie vacationed in Palm Beach often as a child and hopes to one day open a boutique on Worth Avenue, one of her favorite places to visit. i LEFT AND ABOVE:

Once guests attend a polo match, it’s hard not to walk away a fan. And that’s good news for the 2017 Winter Polo Season at Palm Beach’s own International Polo Club. When it comes to polo in the United States, the exceptional 200-acre International Polo Club nestled within Palm Beach’s Wellington horse community is unparalleled. Drama and excitement unfold as high-goal games get underway — a Sunday afternoon destination that guarantees thrilling entertainment. For 17 weeks through April 23, 2017, the world’s finest polo players and their ponies storm into Wellington, Fla., where international teams go head-to-head in the greatest athletic and equine polo matchups. Spectators heading out for a day of polo will enjoy the pageantry of thoroughbred horses charging down the field, the solid click of mallet on ball, and the traditional halftime “Champagne Divot Stomp” as fans are invited to stomp down the grass that the ponies kicked up on the field. Whether you are a longtime polo fan or have never attended a polo match before, the “Sport of Kings” is one of the most thrilling to observe in person as top players such as Facundo Pieres, Hilario Ullo and Nic Roldan hold court. WINTER EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL 2017 Champions take the reins to compete for top honors at this year’s Winter Equestrian Festival from Jan. 11 - April 2, 2017. TEXT BY KIM MOSLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SPORTFOT

Each winter season, Wellington, Fla., welcomes the best equestrians from around the globe and across North America to compete at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center from Jan. 11 - April 2, 2017. Celebrity sightings will be uber-intense at what insiders tell us is the “beginning” of the global winter equestrian scene. The WEF is one of the world’s largest and longest running equestrian competitions and plays host to more than 5,000 horses and 2,800 riders from all 50 states and 33 countries. Considered one of the most recognizable equestrian sporting venues in America, the 500-acre Palm Beach International Equestrian Center is nestled in the heart of an 8,000-acre equestrian paradise in Wellington, Fla. During the winter season (December - April), Wellington becomes an equestrian mecca, home to local and visiting horses of all breeds and sporting disciplines including show jumping, hunter, dressage, western/trail riding, driving and polo. For information, visit www.equestriansport.com. i

remembers walking away with a smile on her face. She turned to her design team member Ashley Sharpe and said, “This is going to be fun.” The owner’s wife had just chosen the first bit of fabric for the project. It was a tropical motif of hibiscus, royal poinciana, pineapples and magnolia blooms done in pinks, corals and blues. That swatch of fabric ended up providing not only the island theme for the home’s decor but also its vivacious color scheme. And to make things even better, the clients were willing to try just about anything. “Although they may have been apprehensive about certain suggestions, they didn’t set any rules,” McMakin says. “We were allowed to let our imaginations run free.” Architect Peter Papadopoulos joined the team early on and it was his job to blend the casual comfort and fun the clients wanted with the home’s venerable Palm Beach surroundings. This finished house easily boasts 6,400 square-feet of air-conditioned space. It’s the perfect place for the clients and their standard poodle to retreat

In the back of this lot that measures over 21,000 square feet, he helped create a Chippendale-inspired gazebo. “The owner said he wanted a place where he could sit and look back at his ‘pretty house.’ So we worked as a team to create this gazebo,” McMakin says. lamps add another playful touch of the tropics. “The glazed walls have a reflective sheen that changes color depending upon the angle of the sun,” Sharpe says. But as the sun sets and it’s time for dinner, it’s also time to enjoy the dining room — literally a work of art itself. Beneath the 14-foot-high pitched ceiling, a hand-painted, 360-degree panoramic mural mimics the view from a mountaintop in Antiqua. Local artist Zenon Toczek worked for months painting this scene from

a photograph the owners had taken while visiting their favorite spot. Sharpe got involved when the owners wanted to use an antique area rug and the dining room is where it fit. The designer matched the muted tones of the rug, one by one, to paint chips for the artist to use in the “sunset” mural. Like the dining room, the master bedroom features a pitched custom-crafted tongue-and-groove ceiling. “In fact, just about everything in this room is custom made,” McMakin says. The vanity in “her” bath also is a custom piece made from painted wood with a honed limestone top. The loggia is where the designers honor famed architect Addison Mizner whose distinctive Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial architecture has influenced much of what you see in Palm Beach. Stepping into the backyard, Papadopoulos is pleased with the results of the teamwork that created this cherished home. “When I stand by the pool and look at the house, I get a feeling of comfort. I love the detail and juxtaposition of elements that work so well together,” the architect says. “It’s not just a big block of a house.” And what’s better, McMakin’s premonition came true. “I’ve been in the design business for many years, but this project stands out as one of the happiest,” she says. continued on 108

TENNIS ANYONE? The world’s only 10-day combined ATP Champions Tour and ATP World Tour event celebrates its 25th anniversary from Feb. 17-26, 2017.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Delray Beach Open returns with world-class tournaments featuring many of the top-ranked men’s tennis professionals in the world, more than a week’s worth of parties, special events and nightly concerts. One of the most intimate and fan-friendly competitions in professional sports, the event plays host to more than 50,000 spectators expected to rock the stands at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center from Feb. 17-26, 2017, while millions more watch on television and live broadband coverage. It’s two tournaments in one as this 10-day anniversary extravaganza includes both the annual ATP Champions Tour and the ATP World Tour — two events held simultaneously to showcase the best of today’s tennis professionals. Milos Raonic, who is currently No. 4 in the world, returns to compete in the Delray Beach singles draw, along with Juan Martin Del Potro, continued on 150 ABOVE:
As the most celebrated team in tennis history, the Bryan Brothers (twins Bob
and Mike) will be looking to build on their record 112 ATP tournament wins and reaching their 1,000th career match wins — a feat accomplished only in singles by ATP legends Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl.

And the dynamic Bryan Brothers will vie for the championship once again, having won four Delray Beach Open double titles since 2009. It’s a blast from the past when tennis greats the likes of USA’s James Blake, Mardy Fish and Vince Spadea join international players Fernando Gonzalez (a new face at the Delray Beach Open), Sebastien Grosjean and Mikael Pernfors center court. With US Open champions, Delray Beach champions, top American players … and the Bryan Brothers leading the doubles draw, Delray Beach is the place to see champions play in 2017. S
uperyacht ZEN creates a new typology of yachts. Unique in its use of space, the profile of the 262-foot yacht breaks from the typical layered “wedding-cake” appearance, without sacrificing usable space. A collaboration between Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design and Feadship Royal Dutch Shipyards, ZEN caters to the clients’ tendency to spend a large proportion of their time in one preferred lounge and on one particular deck. The result? ZEN concentrates all the owner’s spaces on only two decks. A full-beam front section of the main deck is reserved for the owner state room and lounge, office, and his and hers dressing area and bathroom. At the sides, full-height glass facades offer sweeping vistas of the ocean from those key areas. All of the yacht’s furnishings are custom designed by Sinot and produced by the finest craftsmen. The balanced application of dark wood, chenille fabrics, bronzes with a variety of patinas, and natural materials such as split sandstone and teak, create unity among the different elements. www.sinot.com; www.feadship.nl i
