FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION Florida Design Naples Edition is fast becoming the number one source for finding upscale design, fine furnishings and real estate in the Naples area. While our Naples edition has editorial and circulation primarily in Southwest Florida, for many years our ABOVE:
The 288-foot Maltese Falcon is ideal for entertaining with
its wide array of tenders and toys, many areas for cocktails and dining, and the largest outdoor cinema screen on the water.
Florida Design state and national edition has been Florida’s largest paid circulation Florida title. We are sold at thousands of newsstands nationwide through Time, Inc., our national distributor. With an estimated 50% of Southwest Florida’s homes sold over $2 million dollars coming from outside the state, we hope to entice newcomers to the area before and after they come here to buy. Once again, we feature about 160 pages of editorial showcasing many of Collier and Lee counties’ finest designers and architects. In addition, we preview upscale resorts worldwide plus spectacular yachts, private jets, luxury products and real estate. Please consider Florida Design when you complete a project and send us your submissions for future issues. Whether you’re a builder, architect, designer or homeowner, our editors are looking for the most inspired design Naples has to offer. We hope you enjoy this issue of Florida Design Naples Edition as you find inspiration for your next design project.

AN ECLECTIC MIX Photo by Mila Bridger
The new Florida Design Naples Edition has a curated mix of elite designers, representing a host of different styles that will inspire and intrigue. The results are an eclectic mix of our industry’s talents. On our pages, no two homes look alike and no two design statements are repeated. This keeps the eye on a fun journey throughout and offers a wider perspective for our readers, many of whom are buying, building or renovating a home. Naples is a jewel. It is not an urban, bustling city, and yet it attracts a very sophisticated and discerning individual. It has a peaceful vibe, yet offers celebratory experiences that attract people from all over the country to spend time making memories here. In celebration of that dichotomy, we have assembled a diverse feature well in our second edition to delight and inspire the homeowner looking for new ideas. Our goal is to bring that fresh inspiration to our community and to provide our readers with resources locally to whom they can call on to create a new or reimagine their existing environment. In this spirit of creativity, we will be publishing a selection of this year’s 2017
ABOVE: Designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller of Carrier and Company Interiors, Ltd., New York, NY, incorporate a French Deco cocktail table and a 1960s pagoda-style Murano glass lamp in the living room. See page 262. Photo by Robert Brantley.
Sand Dollar Award recipients in our next issue this November. As the Sand Dollar’s top presenting sponsor, we recognize the CBIA’s annual quest for the “A” List of the Naples area luxury home industry and will celebrate some of its winners in a special section in our next issue. So let’s shift the paradigm together as to what “luxury” in Naples looks like. We all know the Tuscan look has long seen its day, but what’s next? What is the future of luxury in the home here in Naples? Let’s find out together.

You don’t have to be a professional chef to appreciate the top-end appliances and finishes in the home’s gorgeous kitchen.
To call it perfect might be selling it short. Coming in at 3,347 square foot underair (3,913 under roof), the home’s interior is balanced, accessible and beautifully furnished by Clive Daniel Home with entertaining in mind. It features wide-plank wood floors under foot, 10-foot tray ceilings overhead, and a livability in between that blends elegance with comfort, so that family and friends alike can move freely from the high-end gourmet kitchen to the stylish dining area to the chic living room without ever being far from the action. And as mentioned, that space opens onto an outdoor living area with a custom pool and spa featuring rich IPE decking, an outdoor kitchen with dining area, and just enough lounge area for you to perfect your tan. Also off the fabulous pool area is the large master suite that defines serenity. It’s expansive master bathroom features breathtaking tile work and a full body jet shower system. Conveniently, a spacious laundry room is right off the suite. “And if you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet away from all the action,
The main floor master suite defines serenity and opens directly onto the outdoor living area.
all you have to do is walk up the home’s dramatic custom staircase located in the home’s tower — or take the elevator — to find yourself in a large loft that overlooks both the pool area and side yard,” says DiSabato, who has more than $100 million in sales to his credit. “The second floor is also home to three more bedrooms, one of which can function as a second master suite. … With exquisite finishes, the highest attention to detail and the perfect location, this home is a must see for anyone interested in experiencing the best of Naples.” The corner lot home, which also features a full two-car garage, is available fully furnished for $4,175,000. LAKESIDE LUXURY A NEW BUILD ON THE SHORES OF LAKE COMO EMBODIES ELEGANT COASTAL LIVING IN ONE COUPLE’S WINTER RETREAT
INTERIOR DESIGN BY ARLYNN MCDANIEL AND FAITH FIX, FREESTYLE INTERIORS, BONITA SPRINGS, FL ARCHITECTURE BY ALBERTO ABAD, NEW ARCHITECTURA, INC., BONITA SPRINGS, FL BUILDER GULFSHORE HOMES, BONITA SPRINGS, FL TEXT BY CHARLOTTE SAFAVI PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORI HAMILTON, NAPLES, FL
W
hen New Jersey residents Bill and Elaine Thompson decided to build a family vacation retreat on Lake Como in the Sorrento community of Miromar Lakes, Fla., they commissioned interior
designer Arlynn McDaniel to bring their visions for a Floridian winter retreat to fruition. “Two words come to mind: light and functionality,” says Elaine, in reference to the first conversation she and her husband had with architect Alberto Abad, who created the 5,537-square-foot lakefront house with builder Mike Soule. “We wanted ample glass to provide multiple sources of natural light and to connect with the lake views,” the homeowner says. “As for functionality, because of the one-story floor plan, it was important to establish appropriate social and private spaces that were separate, yet could come together for entertaining. That’s why the idea of a gallery was so appealing.” A colonnaded gallery serves as a foyer opening onto the main living space, and also a hallway that runs left to the master suite and right to the guest wing. Thasos marble flooring with mother-of-pearl inlays grounds the space, where McDaniel added symmetry with repeat furnishings and accessories, such as triple crystal chandeliers shaded in linen. ABOVE:

“Though this house is definitely transitional in style, it has a lot of classic elements, including extensive trim and moldings,” says McDaniel, who designed the paneled fireplace feature wall in the combined living and dining area. “The fireplace captures attention, serving as a focal point without consuming the space.” The aim was to create subtle sophistication in the more formal spaces styled for entertaining. “We wanted a lot of white, with ice blue tones, in the main area,” the homeowner says. “But, first and foremost, we wanted the house to be warm and inviting.” Perfect for large parties or small gatherings, the formal living and dining rooms not only provide ample seating hearthside and at the dining table, but the furnishings are user-friendly and comfortable. are roll-armed white sofas upholstered in a resilient Sunbrella fabric; a tufted, leather-clad ottoman; an easy-to-maintain, glass-topped dining table on a double-pedestal base; and slipcovered dining chairs in a tone-on-tone stripe with contrasting trim. Even the host and hostess banquettes don’t take themselves too seriously with their playful zebra print and chrome nailhead trim. “We went warmer in the kitchen and great room,” McDaniel says. “It’s a more casual area. We pulled in darker metal in the light fixtures and we also did our nailhead trim in a bronze, instead of chrome, on both the counter stools and dining chairs.” Rich walnut defines the open area from above, while wide plank walnut wood flooring grounds the open space in warmth.

McDaniel also custom-designed a TV feature wall and console in stained wood with open shelving and closed storage. On one side, accordion sliding glass doors open onto the patio and pool area for casual lakefront gatherings. On the other side, the space connects back to the gallery hall, creating a circular flow between the social areas throughout the house.

Expert Q&A
Q
Why is it important to consult with a professional lighting designer when replacing or putting new lighting in your home?
A
Lighting is currently in the midst of an LED technology revolution, and it is important to understand the way that these changes can affect your home and your lifestyle. So many factors—color temperature, brightness, size, lumens, energy efficiency, the final expense—should be considered when selecting new lighting. Additionally, knowledge of safety and building codes is essential. For example, the 12-foot chandelier (above, left) connects to a 32-foot ceiling and it gives you just as much drama from down below as you get from the second floor. And we fitted it with LEDs so there’s no heat and we shouldn’t have to change a bulb for 20 years. A professional lighting designer takes all of these important factors into consideration, as well as assists with the decorative decisions, so that you are pleased with your investment for years to come. 2016 Sand Dollar Award-Winning Project: Big Island Builders, Inc. 2016 ASID Design Excellence Winner: Koastal Design Group – Kira Krümm & Co.

Q A
My walk-in closet lighting seems to just throw shadows. Can closets actually have decent lighting or is that a dream?
Well, the owner of the closet above wanted it to be very well lit but didn’t want to see the light source. She wanted a crystal chandelier, so we incorporated in-cabinet lighting, under-cabinet lighting, over-cabinet lighting, and 2-inch adjustable LEDs angled toward the clothes. And each one is on it’s own switch, so she can do whatever she wants in there. Chandeliers alone cause tremendous striation because of the crystals, so we increased the lumen level of the LEDs to correct that. So not only can it be done, but it can be done beautifully.
Q A
I’m looking for lighting that will really make my home stand out — something dynamic. What would you suggest?
Light as art becomes a focal point in someone’s home. It’s a dramatic feature that creates depth and interest. Everybody has art on their walls, but when you create it with light, it’s unique to that home. Often they’re small little fixtures, but when you put them in a certain pattern and in a certain quantity, they become more — there’s a synergistic effect. Of course, we tend to use LEDs in these cases because people tend to want to use their light walls all the time, day and night, and it doesn’t create any extra heat or use much wattage. We’re working on one right now that is going straight up a wall to a 28-foot ceiling. But you can do it on an 8-foot ceiling, say in a narrow foyer, to create some interest. It really is dramatic.

A NEW COUNTRY HOME TELLS A GENERATIONAL STORY FOR A FAMILY IN MEDITERRA
S
erene, rustic, elegant and out of the past, the heart of this French country-style home is a simple structure capped with a stone and terracotta chimney. Behind it, a roof and gable top a two-story building, while a one-story wing
branches out to greet guests through an arched entry. A true manifestation of homeowners’ aspirations, their new 9,149-square-foot home in Mediterra, an idyllic community in Naples, Fla., is very much how they envisioned it — authentic, old and expanded over generations.

With natural stone walls and earthy hues, this French country-style home is set off by live oak, magnolia, Italian cypress and red cedar trees. A gravel driveway winds around informal gardens with brilliant spots of vivid color.
“We were after a French farmhouse style with an organic feeling,” the homeowner says. “That’s how it all started, probably inspired by our travels through France, particularly in the wine country. My husband and I love the architecture and the gardens there.” To build a brand new home that appears as if it was 300 years old and in France may seem daunting. Not so for architect Rob Herscoe and builder Joe Smallwood. “The execution of putting the finishes together and pulling off the look

“A FARMHOUSE SHOULD NOT BE OVERLY DECORATED,” ARCHITECT ROB HERSCOE SAYS. “ITS BEAUTY SHOULD COME THROUGH IN THE PROPORTIONS, MATERIALS AND VOLUME OF THE SPACE.”
was the challenge,” Smallwood says. Having worked very closely with the homeowners on the interior scheme, designer Ivy Scheinholz brings it a little closer to home. “Like Dorothy’s home landing in Oz, this French farmhouse looks like it dropped down in Naples,” she says. To achieve an aged European look, the homeowners’ team of wizards worked out every detail. “Going further than a temporary mockup, Rob did a full-scale printout on paper of what he wanted the house to look like,” Smallwood says. “Using that as a template, we then sketched it on the structure and built it … watching every step to make sure it was right.” Stone rubble shows through walls covered in tinted lime plaster; natural irregular stone coining edges doors and windows; and the terra-cotta clay-tile roof is in buff and ochre.

Laura Lee Designs’ rustic wall sconces and an iron chandelier from John Rosselli fill the open great room with the glow of candlelight. A custom banquette shapes the dining bay, while Stark’s hand-knotted Egyptian area rug defines the living area.

“EVERY TIME WE COME BACK TO THIS HOUSE, WE ARE HAPPY TO BE HERE,” THE HOMEOWNER SAYS. “IT’S A HOME THAT WE DEARLY LOVE AND IT FITS OUR LIFESTYLE.”
Interior architecture carries through Old World details. In the great room, vaulted ceilings are set off with true oak beams and the wood-plank flooring is polished with layers of wax, creating a rich patina. For furnishings, the designer integrated the couple’s antique collection with simple elegant pieces. “The trick is to blend all elements of design,” Scheinholz says. In the dining bay, Louis XVI chairs, clad in white and taupe woven linen from Nobilis, and a custom banquette, covered in a creamy white linen-cotton blend, surround an antique French farm table. Nearby, a conversation grouping in the living area is inviting with its linen-clad sofa by Kravet accented with throw pillows in caramel velvet. Joining the mix, a deep-seated armchair and ottoman from Jerry Pair are styled with turned legs and transitional lines. The homeowners’ bronze sculpture offers a touch of whimsy on a glass-topped cocktail table based in hammered iron.
RIGHT:
Old and new elements also intermix for a
farmhouse feeling in the kitchen, where minimal upper cabinetry, a custom hood, period hardware and brackets evoke age. Black iron pendant lights from John Rosselli continue the rustic theme.

HAVING OVERSEEN THE HOME’S GROUNDS THAT BORDER A NATURE PRESERVE, THE OWNER TWEAKED THE GARDENS TO BE REMINISCENT OF INFORMAL FRENCH GARDENS ... LIKE THE ONES SHE ADMIRED IN FRANCE’S WINE COUNTRY.
An aged patina look wraps the kitchen, where a cerused oak ceiling looks like it may have been refinished many times, and a massive iron grill recalls a farmhouse’s kitchen hearth. Cabinetry is finished in white milk paint with brushed nickel hardware, while decorative iron corbels support the granite countertops. And with country cuisine on the mind, Windsor host chairs and parson-style side chairs beckon the family to gather around the French antique cherry wood farm table for culinary delights. French doors open to the lanai and pool beyond. In keeping with historically correct architecture, old brick, natural stone walls, wood-stained columns, rough-hewn wood shutters, webbed trusses and custom iron railings lend a certain authenticity. “The design process was as enjoyable as seeing the final execution of the house,” Herscoe says. “The clients were thoroughly engaged in creating not just a house, but a home that has a history they helped create … that has nostalgic meaning for them.” N

A FIFTH-GENERATION NEAPOLITAN, Lisa Lovetto spent her childhood immersed in the unspoiled outdoors of Southwest Florida, where she developed a passion for natural forms and textures that informs her design aesthetic to this day. Her travels around the globe, meanwhile, have helped shape her understanding of how the spaces we create reflect the rhythms of our lives. Claudine Léger-Wetzel, and Matt Sellick, Vice President of Stock Custom Homes, joined together again to create this unique 4,189-square-foot dream home in Naples, Fla., — an open concept floor plan that makes
indoor-outdoor living a focal point of the space. “We want a product that resonates with the buyer,” Wetzel says, “and this project has it all.” “From the sleek entrance of the home you can see through to the outdoor living space,” Sellick says. “This sets the tone right from the start.” Each room pays homage to this transitional theme with color and detail, while still telling a story of its own.

THE TRANQUIL MASTER BEDROOM IS CREATED WITH NEUTRAL FURNISHINGS FROM BERNHARDT THAT BRING WARMTH TO THE SPACE. A COZY CHAIR, PERFECT FOR READING, IS POSITIONED IN A CORNER NEAR FRENCH DOORS THAT OPEN TO THE POOL AREA.
The entry foyer makes a spare yet striking visual statement. A polished nickel chandelier from Visual Comfort illuminates the space, while white, polished porcelain tile flooring flows throughout the home. Echoing the polished feel, an interlocking ring console, garnished with a minimalist touch and accented with a tranquil painting, Into the Mist 1, by artist D’Alessandro Leon, helps to bring the outside in. Nearby, in the sophisticated great room, a sofa clad in a light gray fabric and twin Bernhardt lounge chairs wrapped in a pearl fabric with a white oak wood frame add elegance to the space. “I find all the pieces in the great room to be attractive, alone,” Horvath says. “Together, however, they create a look that’s very fresh and sophisticated.” A recycled green-glass chandelier by Curry & Company lends color and texture to an otherwise neutral palette. The space opens to the kitchen, where gray counter stools pull up to a white, cascading breakfast bar covered with quartz. In the master bedroom, Bernhardt’s “Aragon Metal” bed is designed with a German silver headboard. Lit by a chandelier with a green-glass finish, it brings outdoor color to indoor living. Sheer draperies lend a softer touch with bead accents. “These are the small details we tried to bring into the home,” Horvath says. RIGHT:
In the office, an oversized desk in espresso wood adds warmth and provides a bold contrast to contemporary

Geometric built-in wall shelving in the office is offset by playful artwork on the opposite wall. It adds fun with color and texture without competing with the room’s focal point — a polished nickel modular ring chandelier with exposed Edison bulbs. Plush seating poufs from Interlude Home lend a more delicate touch. Outdoors, the expansive pool shimmers near the loggia, where white, powder-coated stainless steel sofas and armchairs covered in “Spinnaker Salt” fabric are accented with bright blue and patterned pillows from Elaine Smith. Underfoot, a navy blue-and-white area rug from All Modern grounds the space in a bold color. Serenity Pool’s shellstone paver flooring in a white-pearl finish adds a luxurious feel. The design team created a home with exemplary style and extraordinary features. “It’s such a rewarding experience to see a job when it’s all said and done,” Horvath says. “It’s amazing when everything is just how you envisioned it.”

French-Russian artist Marc Chagall’s Le Peintre and L’Oiseau paintings from Metcalfe Klopfer Gallery give each living room wall its own stake in the claim for attention.

S
ituated in Naples’ Bay Colony, this 6,100-square-foot condominium overlooks the Gulf of Mexico from its 12th-floor perch. Naturally, the view is the main act … but interior designer
Janet Bilotti wanted even more for her clients, prominent real estate agent Carol Gilman and retired CEO Doug Esson. The goal: a home that is both functional and meticulously aesthetic that reflects the couple’s way of life. From the abstract art and kitchen counter space galore, to the gray, white, and beige tones that canvas the floors and walls. It’s a space for living, a clean slate for two tastes blended together. The living room is delicately punctuated by statement pieces that divulge the owners’ affinity for glass and simplicity. White tones prevail in the social space, where custom deep-seated sofas sit atop NIBA Home’s white-and-silver wool area rug and Coraggio sheers open to reveal turquoise Gulf views. “This premier view should be enjoyed,” Bilotti says. “A space with such large square footage, which can often be intimidating, was made inviting.”

Vivid red hues capture attention in the foyer, while neutral tones dominate beyond. Wildwood lamps top
a Gregorius/Pineo console from Holly Hunt that was chosen for its airiness, slightly concave top and the interplay between textures — a multi-medium of woods and the hammered bronze metal that flanks each side.

A contemporary chandelier casts circles of light around the dining room as family and friends gather at the mahogany wood table from Councill. A striking interplay of color, the contemporary piece by artist Gilles Gorriti dots the white museum-like walls in the formal space. Art plays a key role throughout. Right from the start, a large, red piece commissioned for the foyer entry pairs with a vivid Persian area rug to make a notable first impression. The cozy breakfast area offers a perfect spot to read the morning paper and enjoy a cup of coffee while gazing at the vacationers at the Ritz Carlton just beyond. Holly Hunt’s creamy leather-clad chairs circle a walnut wood table in complementary contrast. “I like the play on textures and form,” Bilotti says. “We have the marble Lazy Susan in the middle of the wood table.” A circular pendant light fixture completes the scene with its silver leaf finish and warm linen shade. Set within dark, stained ash cabinetry and framed by a Taj Mahal quartz mantle, the EcoSmart fireplace provides a warm hearthside glow in the family room. Here, the designer colored the otherwise cool space with vibrant works of art and stunning blown glass. In a drastically darker plot twist, the study pays homage to the condo’s former style, full of rich, deep tones in features such as the wood and granite flooring, yet with a lighter ceiling and cleaner light fixtures than before.

In the family room, a deep-seated sofa and lounge chair from Kreiss shape a social grouping around a
silver-leaf wood cocktail table topped in black mirror. Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild cabinetry, crafted of dark stained ash, lines the wall in perfect complement. Vibrant glass art — pieces from Santorini, Greece on top, Gallery One in Naples in the middle, and Piece Art Gallery in Vail on the bottom — dramatically hold their own.

3/31/17 11:11 AM
A PICTURESQUE VIEW OF NORTH NAPLES CREATES A SERENE SETTING FOR THE STUDY — A QUIET PLACE FOR BUSINESS AND REFLECTION. NEW ADDITIONS INCLUDE A COUNCILL DESK AND SHELVING TO HOUSE THE OWNERS’ COLLECTION OF BOOKS. Lit overhead by a tray ceiling outfit with small LED lights and Fine Art Lamps’ pendant light fixtures, cool quartzite reappears in the kitchen. Counter space abounds, fitting nicely into the understated gray, beige and white color scheme — a canvas for the focal points including the amber blown glass pears that rest atop the anchoring center island. A morning view from the master bedroom is like waking up on a cruise ship as natural sunlight dances off the turquoise waters beyond. In addition to the conventional contrast of dark verses light, a lilac hue dresses the private space in elegance, yielding a result that whispers a slight feminine delicacy. “When someone walks in and says, ‘What a great chandelier,’ or ‘What a great rug,’ that’s not a compliment to me,” Bilotti says. “I want it to be, ‘What a great room, what a great home!’” And that’s just what this couple’s renewed condo is … fresh, inviting and the sum of all parts.

ituated in an ideal location between Naples Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway, it is no surprise that this 6,625-square-foot spec house in the affluent neighborhood of Port Royal in Naples, Fla., sold within days of
completion. “The owners — a family who already lived in the neighborhood — traveled to the opening night house party by boat. They fell in love with the site and bought the house that evening,” says interior designer Lauri Godfrey, who collaborated on the project with longtime colleagues architect Jeff Harrell and builder Joe Smallwood.

“I TOOK MY DESIGN CUES FROM THE BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURAL DETAILING … I WANTED TO CREATE A SPACE WITH AN ELEGANT PERSONALITY, YET ONE THAT WAS COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED TOO,” INTERIOR DESIGNER BETSY GODFREY SAYS.
“The house is designed for outdoor use as much as for indoor use,” says Smallwood of its shady verandas, spa and pool area, and landscaped gardens. “With our temperate coastal climate, people live outside nine months out of the year.” The home’s architecture, which takes advantage of the breathtaking scenery at every turn, has a distinct Mediterranean flavor with an exterior of creamy hued stucco walls, cast stone friezes and corbels, and decorative arches along shaded verandas. Inside, the home exudes European flair with its columns, beams and moldings, “but it is clean lined and more transitional,” Smallwood says. “Nothing is overdone — architectural details are simpler yet more refined and sophisticated.” Entering the foyer through mahogany front doors, French-inspired wrought-iron scrollwork, a dramatic groin-vaulted ceiling and a quartet of Doric columns define this open space. White Carrara marble and a perimeter of Black Absolute marble flooring define the entry, with decorative insets that tie them together. “It looks so striking when you enter the

home,” Godfrey says. The eye travels across the room to a two-story living room with soaring floor-to ceiling windows and water views that make an even more dramatic statement. To best showcase the architecture, artwork and views in the living room, Godfrey painted interior walls a neutral creamy hue, with moldings a touch lighter and brighter to highlight its features. A tone-on-tone color palette incorporates grays and blues, with dashes of silver, platinum and pewter. Godfrey enjoys mixing textures and patterns with accent pieces such as floral pillows on a tailored sofa from Hickory Chair and geometric pillows on wing chairs in gray leather from Holly Hunt. Floor-to-ceiling draperies in ivory wool add warmth but do not impede the water views. The refined formal dining room is a more intimate space. Walnut dining chairs with seats clad in a patterned-platinum fabric from Cassaro surround a dark walnut table. “To me, the dining room feels like a jewelry box with its silk-upholstered walls, silver-leaf faux-finished tray ceiling and double crystal chandeliers,” Godfrey says.

Just steps from the dining room, the more casual breakfast area and family room with its vaulted ceiling and glass transom lend an open airy feel. Warmer in palette, the breakfast area is fashioned with taupe linen-blend covered dining chairs and in the family room beyond, comfortable armchairs are wrapped in a navy blue chenille. Here, strong architectural details can be found in a walnut door, metal-framed glass pendants and double grid-mirrored walls that reflect water views. “Instead of leaving the ceiling timbers and trusses rustic, they are painted,” Smallwood says. “It keeps the room more refined like the rest of the home.” Godfrey furnished the outdoor spaces with a combination of wrought iron, woven rattan and teak wood furnishings. Viewed from the private dock, the house stretches languidly on its peninsula, and with its variety of rooflines, resembles a small Mediterranean village. “This house could be found on a Riviera hillside designed to take advantage of the water views, or it can be found in Naples, Fla., built to just out onto Naples Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway,” Smallwood says. “It’s all about great architecture on a very special piece of property,” he says.

QUESTION: ANSWER:
What is your design philosophy?
If you don’t feel comfortable in a space it just isn’t
well designed. Comfort is more than a physical reaction — it also has to do with a state of mind that occurs when you feel that you can really live in the space. QUESTION: ANSWER:
From where do you draw your inspiration?
I think that travel is one of the best ways to expose
yourself to new ideas and inspiration. I constantly keep pushing myself to grow, experience and learn new things. QUESTION: ANSWER:
What are the key influences in your life today?
No matter the size or style of the project, I always
focus first on how my clients want the room to work for them. Our surroundings should be the place that lets us be our very best selves. Then I add in the decor. QUESTION: ANSWER:
What do you define as a successful project?

estled in the heart of Pelican Bay in Naples, Fla., is a sophisticated tropical oasis in the upscale waterfront community of Pelican Bay Woods. With remarkable vision, the dream team of Stofft
Cooney Architects, Knauf-Koenig Group and Calusa Bay Design created this 7,166-square-foot estate home with a glorious outdoor area that flows effortlessly from the interior spaces. “We wanted to create a sophisticated yet casual lifestyle that brings the outside in, with entertaining as a key factor,” says Leslie Sherman, who is both the home’s developer and part of the design team. The project was seamless from beginning to end. “There were no major challenges, as this was a great site,” architect John Cooney says. “Leslie likes a contemporary twist with a tropical West Indies style, and the home developed well with an open plan that lives inside and out via its expansive

In the dining room, Hickory Chair’s high-back host chairs with nail head trim and side chairs upholstered in crème linen bring formality into the space. “Many of our clients spend four to six months in Naples, and appreciate having a beautiful space to entertain while enjoying this peaceful lifestyle,” design director Debra Lysy says.

A neutral palette with touches of blue and green tones along with wide-plank flooring, original artwork and hand knotted area rugs add to the home’s coastal chic look. The great room with its large framed view of the landscaped pool area and outdoor living space provides “a beautiful welcoming view from the minute you enter the home … and from there every room gets better,” Design Director Debra Lysy says. “The beauty and quality throughout are what make this home so special.” Two ivory colored sofas from Hickory Chair, one skirted and the other upholstered with tapered legs, are arranged to take full advantage of the view. “The style is sophisticated and eclectic, as evidenced by the combination of antique cocktail tables, contemporary artwork, soft, hand-knotted area rugs and a beautiful, rustic Legno Bastone wide plank oak flooring, all beautifully accented by an occasional pop of tangerine color. In the elegant dining room, a rich walnut table edged by neutral-toned side chairs and patterned host chairs, rests beneath a green recycled glass Currey & Company chandelier that exudes hushed

Perfectly paired with a soft, dove-gray stained island and wet bar, all topped with two-inch mitered quartzite counters. A glass tiled backsplash coordinates perfectly with four unique upholstered counter stools. The family room offers comfortable living with low-key elegance. Pearson’s large, stone-colored herringbone-print sectional anchors the space, adorned with vibrant throw pillows in aqua and other coastal blue colors. A cozy breakfast nook with custom bench seating by Calusa Bay Design accommodates casual dining. Perhaps the home’s most notable feature is the folding glass wall which separates family living from the outdoor great room. “The glass wall is an example of this team’s thoughtful design and exceptional attention to detail,” General Contractor Matt Knauf says. “This key design element integrates the indoor and outdoor living spaces to create a fantastic open-air venue perfect for entertaining or casual lounging.” The master bedroom wing affords complete privacy coupled with a spa-like serenity. Flanked by park-like gardens on view through large, floor-to-ceiling windows, the king-sized bed features a graceful upholstered headboard with curved wings, dressed in light-toned bedding. Vintage Mid-century modern master chests and a coordinating dresser complete the look. The spa-like master bath is defined by its unique custom cabinetry, finished in driftwood

and topped with two-inch white marble, and a freestanding cast iron soaking tub that resembles a work of art. “We created two distinctly separate spaces, perfect for a couple’s daily living,” Sherman says. Outdoors, the pool area and loggia are designed for lounging and entertaining. “This house is perfect for a wide range of people … it is great for anyone who loves to entertain and enjoys the lifestyle of indoor-outdoor living Naples has to offer,” Knauf says. A 50-foot-long pool with a raised spa offers hours of fun in the sun. A screened and shuttered loggia featuring a light teak sectional and armchairs cushioned in pale gray, provides a relaxing spot to relax after a swim, or enjoy an al fresco summer dinner. “This home provided a fantastic canvas to work with,” Lysy says. “The team has successfully captured the spirit and essence of a relaxed and sophisticated coastal retreat.”

n designing this 7,600-square-foot home situated on the Intracoastal Waterway in Naples, Fla., designer Leslie Derrick wanted to take it to a new level of beauty. “I believe that editing is the most important
ingredient in achieving successful design,” she says. Drawing from her previous history with the owners, the designer already had strong insight into what they desired in a home. The clients wanted to accommodate extended family and friends with a collection of suites and guest apartments separate from the main residence.

a new level of beauty THERE ARE NO BOUNDARIES WHEN IT COMES TO THIS ELEGANT AND SOPHISTICATED NAPLES HOME THAT BLENDS CONTEMPORARY FURNISHINGS WITH TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS
A stained mahogany door welcomes guests to this architecturally refined residence that boasts lush garden views and steps of stone that lead to the entrance. “It is a timeless style and design similar to a British Colonial home,” architect Steven Brisson says.
“My clients were very attracted to the architectural layout,” Derrick says of architect Steve Brisson’s design that features an exterior façade of soft cream stucco, custom blue-green blended shutters and a stairway entrance of exotic stone from Syria. Rather than creating a specific theme for a home, the designer likes to bring out her clients’ personal style. The exterior walls of the dining room were matched to the color of the wife’s pearls. “I like to look

at my client’s wardrobe to get a better feel for their personality,” Derrick says. Flanking the entrance to the dining room, a Petite Bergere chair from France on the left, and on the right, cushioned in the same floral fabric, a chair from the Oscar de la Renta with Century Furniture collection with an intricate backing serve as a prelude to the elegance that awaits inside. The dining room is bathed in a captivating palette of cool blues. A custom-designed black granite fireplace features a handhammered polished-nickel screen that lends a contemporary feel. The walnut parquet pedestal table anchors the room and is surrounded by antique side chairs that are painted in a Swedish wood finish and upholstered in a pale-blue fabric. Skirted hostess chairs swathed in a neutral linen toile with varying shades of blue, meld well with a natural sisal area rug. Architectural interest surpasses expectation in the breakfast room. Its planked wood barrel-vaulted ceiling rises above a round metal base table that’s crowned with a striking emerald-green top. French, antique white-painted chairs clad in a stunning Florentine Damask-linen fabric from Bunny Williams Home encircle the table. Underfoot,

a custom Moroccan, pink and orange trellis area rug makes a daring impression. In a sitting area just off the main hallway, crisp white woodwork and stately columns offset a backdrop of textured wallcovering in deep blue silk. A French antique settee, cushioned in green-velvet and trimmed with embroidery, is accented with colorful pillows from Brunschwig & Fils to lend a touch of whimsy. “I wanted to add color and fun to the palette,” the designer says. A hallway vignette, created with an antique painting from Mexico and a shell-inspired console, is tucked in a corner near the living room, where the home’s blue and green tones continue in a blend of traditional and contemporary furnishings. cabinets set with iron-mullion glass panels flank a cozy fireplace. Seafoam-green, linen-embroidered sofas from O. Henry House and antique upholstered chairs with Fortuny fabric add dimension. “All the colors were abstracted from the Oushak area rug in the entry hall,” Derrick says. An oversized basket-style cocktail table lends an informal feel. The outdoor area is a paradise that exudes luxury along with nature’s palette of blue hues that stretch from the shimmering pool to the sky and beyond. All things are possible in this aesthetically pleasing home where creativity and luxury go hand in hand.

omeowner and designer Kimberly Dacier was in the market to find her own vacation retreat in Naples, Fla. Her longtime realtor and friend spied the perfect property built in the 1960s, and Dacier mapped
it on Google Earth and purchased it sight unseen. Razing the 1,000-square-foot bungalow was only the
first step in the creation of this 5,500-square-foot French Caribbean-style home with guest house. To help with the project, Dacier gathered a visionary design team consisting of architect Jeffrey Harrell and builder Randy Kurtz. Harrell’s portfolio of sophisticated, romantic homes with complicated roof lines

and “secret gardens” appealed to her. Kurtz, who often works with Harrell, is known for his attention to detail in the select bespoke homes he builds. “It was unique working with a client who is also a talented designer — she was very involved and worked with us all the way,” Kurtz says. Bahamian slate-covered rooflines and natural stone adorn this sophisticated coastal cottage. “The home’s scale and symmetry give the residence its timeless charm,” Harrell says. As part of a large open space designed with eclectic furnishings, the kitchen needed to be as much “furniture as function, architect Jeff Harrell says. The island and counters are topped with Cristallo quartz and the cabinetry is from Silver Leaf Woodworks.

walkway, an open kitchen and a dining room. The spaces are united by both color palette and fabric selections. “I’ve used many of the pieces here in other homes,” Dacier says. In the living room, surrounding the bar, the designer’s own tapestrytopped stools and burnished accent tables suggest some ancestral thread, though overhead, three circular chandeliers from Pagani Studios are thoroughly modern. Embracing Romo’s teal and blue floral pattern on an Avery Boardman sofa, Dacier added sheer comfort to the family room with beige, cotton-striated club chairs. Lime green on an ottoman and a golden ceramic garden stool enhance the color scheme without overwhelming it. The custom kitchen is designed with pristine white cabinetry. A Calacatta mosaic tile backsplash adds texture under the hood, while Cristallo quartz tops the counters. Nikzad Calais wood flooring connects the kitchen to the living area, where a cream-colored bouclé sofa and armchairs from Robert Allen, covered in kiwi-colored fabric, surround a cozy fireplace.

Setting a tone of delicate formality, the study glitters beneath an agate-tiered chandelier from Corbett Lighting. To replicate the building style of the 18th-Century Caribbean, Harrell makes sure the room’s “island-high” ceilings are the correct scale.

The study is indeed a study … in “relaxed elegance.” Walls and 13-foot-high ceilings in tidewater cypress and the patterned mullions of transom windows harken back to a bygone era. A burst of flowers in the area rug, “Nepal Sunburst,” melds its garden reds and golds with fabric from Lee Jofa in E.J. Victor’s delicate armchairs. In the front hallway, where light emanates from a nearby roof, a reproduction of a mirrored antique chest in black and gold is crowned by artist Albert Wein’s 1946 bronze sculpture. “I’m always cognizant of the direction of light when I design a home,” Harrell says. In a long narrow master bath, two vanities are separated by a mirror that is flanked by identical glass cabinets. Natural light flows through a window that overlooks the courtyard. Just steps into the master bedroom, a refuge created with pearl-gray hues, antique wood and mirrored elements awaits. A mirrored chest from Nancy Corzine, and brass and crystal table lamps sparkle against a gray-tufted linen headboard, along with wallpaper from Farrow & Ball, in a classic English floral pattern drawn from 19th-century pure silk woven jacquards. With the blossoming wisteria, it captures the warmth of English romance and

creates a flourishing, exciting design. French doors lead outdoors to Dacier’s private Jacuzzi. The outdoor pavilion is a favorite place for friends and family to relax. A custom pool designed by Patrick Trefz is separated from a Jacuzzi and fountain that are united by a long watery channel. Leafy latticework patterns on walls and grass seem almost mazelike. Hurricane shutters and automated screens protect the pavilion’s dining area in inclement weather. When all was said and done, Dacier, together with Harrell and Kurtz, had created a home that truly bears the fruits of her vision.

nterior designer Roz Travis has an eye for style. When asked to design a model unit in the luxury high-rise, Kalea Bay, she looked to the ocean waves and white-sand beaches for inspiration. Her sense
of style and attention to detail came together seamlessly, with clean lines, modern furnishings and a creative interior scheme. Travis used a fresh palette of cool aqua hues, sandy neutrals and chrome accents, cuing the beach outside. “A mix of fun textures and use of wood keeps the contemporary space warm and inviting,” Travis says. “Interesting wall features and intricate ceiling details give this home a unique look.”

The main living area is outfitted with custom walnut wood built-ins designed by Woodworker’s Cabinet. Sculptural Italian occasional tables by Minotti give the space contrast, while Thayer Coggin’s stone-topped console speaks to the curvature of Kravet’s sofa.
Located in the North Naples area, overlooking state park greenery, sandy beaches and the Gulf of Mexico, Kalea Bay is coastal living at its finest. This five-tower condominium complex boasts resort-style amenities, from a tennis pavilion to rooftop terraces with breathtaking views. A massive clubhouse, open-air bar and restaurant puts the Gulf Coast condo community on the social map. And this 3,700 square-foot model unit fits perfectly into the luxury lifestyle.

“MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS BASED ON THE COMBINATION OF CLASSIC ELEMENTS, TIMELESS STYLE AND A TOUCH OF SOPHISTICATION,” INTERIOR DESIGNER ROZ TRAVIS SAYS.
Clean and crisp, the kitchen is simple and modern with a white tone-on-tone color palette and a backlit aqua-colored glass backsplash that adds a dramatic pop. Styled with a luxurious waterfall edge, Artistone’s Santa Margherita quartz countertop flows into the adjacent dining area. Here, a unique piece of laser-cut Hermès silk from Jerry Pair floats in Lucite above a Roberta Schilling sideboard. Cool aqua hues continue in the master suite, where the master bath is a vision in shimmering undersea waves. A freestanding tub is anchored in the space by a gorgeous feature wall that catches the light and reflects the water from the tub. Like water droplets, delicate vanity sconces dance with dappled light. Just beyond wood-framed doors, the serene sweep of creamy hues and shimmering accents in the master bedroom exudes a timeless aura as a touch of romance greets the allure of the sea. ABOVE:

A custom-designed media wall lines the home’s study energized with fun patterns and textures in gray tones. The custom desk sits in serious repose, while a pair of upholstered Barcelona chairs offers total relaxation. When Travis set out to design this model unit, she wanted to be true to her clean modern style, while incorporating the outside elements of water, sand and ocean breezes. “My design philosophy is based on the combination of classic elements, timeless style and a touch of sophistication,” Travis says. Nothing short of fabulous, the home’s original local artwork, cool feature walls and clever design concepts throughout capture the spirit of resort-style living at Kalea Bay. RIGHT:

ncorporating the style of their historic 1880s Ohio home in Cincinnati’s historic district into their new home on the Gulf Coast of Florida was important to homeowners Marnette and Paul Perry. Just
steps from the beach and strolling distance to the Old Naples shopping district, their 5,400-square-foot residence was inspired by the historic home they left behind, and their desire for a tropical aesthetic. “The location — a one-third acre in the heart of Old Naples — was everything,” Marnette says. The couple spent a great deal of time with architects Randall Stofft and John Cooney, as well as builder Scott Weidle, to develop the essential concepts of this British West Indies Colonial-style home. “Every element of this home represents a team effort,” Weidle says. The Perrys also worked very closely with interior designer Molly Grup, making every decision together, a process that included choosing which antiques from Cincinnati to bring with them to the Naples home. “The team paid such attention to the details that I live with and enjoy every day,” Marnette says. Outdoors, a custom-designed pool by landscape architect Koby Kirwin helps create a tranquil setting where the family can enjoy the Florida sunshine. “The design takes advantage of the site’s abundant natural light as well as the indigenous indoor-outdoor lifestyle,” Cooney says. In the striking foyer, a dramatic floating stairway beneath a soaring 16-foot-high pecky cypress ceiling can be appreciated from almost every angle of the first-floor living spaces. to view the home’s sparkling pool and lush gardens. “We spent a long time trying to find materials and colors to match our vision,” Weidle says. In the tranquil master bedroom, the soft color palette was derived from the Persian area rug that the owners brought with them from Cincinnati. “We wanted to pull the bright periwinkle blue from the area rug, freshen it up and make it feel different than it did in their home in Cincinnati,” Grup says. The designer also chose accent pillows in blue hues to adorn Bay Design’s cozy armchairs by the large scenic window.

hen homeowners Tom and Carmen Grifferty hired interior designer Sherri DuPont to design their 7,000-square foot home at Quail West, an exclusive residential community in Naples, Fla., they had
admired her talent to define classic detail. The home is a cross between traditional and contemporary with the classic and timeless details this year-round couple desired to capture the outdoor lifestyle while enjoying understated elegance inside. “Our home wraps around the pool, and we just love the views,” says Tom, who, along with his wife Carmen, is a realtor with John R. Wood Properties. “We entertain at least three or four times

a month. We bought the land and had the house built so we could enjoy a beautiful interior yet have a great outdoor living space for our parties.” The couple worked well with DuPont in planning both the interior and exterior spaces, which took about 1-1/2 years to complete. DuPont’s approach for their home was to enlist simple, yet classic detail. There is oak wood flooring that looks like driftwood, flat linen tone paint, LED lighting and low light chandeliers, neutral colors and metallic fibers add texture and elegant glitz. “I definitely designed this home around my clients’

lifestyle,” DuPont says. “Carmen had her own ideas and comfort level. She likes sparkle and glitz, so I used diamonds and rhinestones in a classic and understated way.” The living room is designed in neutrals around the linear fireplace that is balanced with the tall, floor-to-ceiling windows. Twilight Glow, an abstract painting made of glitter and metallic, adds drama to the quiet space. “With the Halogen lights used at night, the painting really shimmers,” DuPont says. For the breakfast area, the designer started with the tray ceiling, repeating the neutral tones and picking up color from the pool area viewed through the large windows. The chrome chandelier was selected because the room needed volume with enough light. “The chandelier holds its own yet doesn’t distract from the view outside,” DuPont says. In the bar area, the iridescent turquoise-blue-green granite bar top virtually sparkles as guests mix and mingle. The columns, which support the two beams reaching the barrel ceiling, give the much-used space a unified look. The velvet-textured banquette and custom antique mirror add the timeless look desired.

“I DEFINITELY DESIGNED THIS HOME AROUND MY CLIENTS’ LIFESTYLE,” INTERIOR DESIGNER SHERRI DUPONT SAYS. “CARMEN HAD HER OWN IDEAS AND COMFORT LEVEL. SHE LIKES SPARKLE AND GLITZ, SO I USED DIAMONDS AND RHINESTONES IN A CLASSIC AND UNDERSTATED WAY.”
Nearby, the antique mirror reappears in the formal dining room to create unity. This time it was placed above a dark walnut buffet with doors finished in metallic. A rectangle ash and oak dining table is surrounded with chairs covered in linen and punctuated by silver nail heads. The double chandeliers made of iron with antique silver platinum finish add the needed volume. “Light sparkles off of the crystal in the evening,” DuPont says. The beautifully designed kitchen is bright with low-voltage recessed lighting in square aperture that works well with the ceiling design. White cabinetry is illuminated so Carmen’s turquoise, green and brown china and glass collection can be displayed. The light Pompeii quartz countertops have a contemporary feel. Elegant and durable, this surface was selected because the look is cleaner than granite. Since Tom is a “wine guy,” he brought 750 bottles from the couple’s former home in Napa, Calif., to fill his temperature-controlled wine room that holds 900 bottles in total. “We lived in California after we left Canada and before settling in Naples,” he says. “I wanted a wine room here, and I did the racking system myself.” Outdoors in the rear, the luxurious, mosaic Vihara-Metta iridescent tiled pool and putting green serve as focal points for dinners and parties of all sizes. The large and diverse space includes a terraced design created on varying ABOVE:
In the wine room, the designer used uplighting for the ceiling, a chandelier for

complex levels. “It’s a mini version of what they had in California,” DuPont says. “The design is layered and not flat. The differing levels give it more depth.” DuPont succeeded in designing a comfortable and happy home for this couple that truly loves their Naples lifestyle with an emphasis on the outdoors. “I am very proud of this house and thrilled that my clients gave me the ability to execute the design that I felt was ideal for them,” DuPont says. “I have to say it was a dream job!”

design team set out to maximize the home’s generous Gulf of Mexico views. “The owners wanted the interior palette to reflect coastal views in a clean and uncluttered home with a modern beach house feel,” Aitcheson says. The front entry leads to the main parlor, where a soaring two-and-one-half story, seamless window, crafted by Faour Glass, drinks in the ocean setting. “The frameless glass window is storm-rated and mitered together,“ says Warfel, who also built the family’s previous home. Two cohesive conversation groupings center the space. At the forefront, four white Ralph Lauren armchairs cluster around an Italian-crafted, contemporary cocktail table

hen a florida couple commissioned interior designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller to work on their vacation home in the Hamptons, they were more than pleased. The couple had recently
relocated to Naples, Fla. Happy with the area, they found themselves wanting to put some roots in with a single-family home — a place to spread out and enjoy. Having admired a particular home on their jogging route, they were ecstatic to find it had gone up for sale. In the middle of their Hamptons project, the couple contacted Carrier and Miller with news that they just purchased a new home and have a new

venture for the husband and wife design team. This being the duo’s first project in Florida, Carrier and Miller didn’t waste any time getting started. Located in a lovely lush and private development in Old Naples, the 7,600-square-foot, 1990s home was purchased from its original owners who lovingly kept it in top condition. The homeowners like the area for its character and “Old Florida” feel, and the authentic Florida architecture. Practically a turnkey, the Caribbean colonial-style home designed by renowned architect Kasmir Korybut needed only minor updating and it was design ready. “Our clients wanted something that feels like Palm Beach in Naples,” Carrier says. They captured the owners’ vision by designing the interior with a blend of new and antique pieces, using different styles to give the impression that the pieces were collected over decades. A classic vision in colonial white with columns framing arched windows, the home’s symmetrical structure capped by two round patios gives a stately appearance. The patio opens up to a wide stairway that leads to the sparkling pool surrounded by luscious grass. Two more open patios frame the yard on either side — one to enjoy an early morning breakfast, and later when the shade has shifted, an alfresco lunch on the other. Complete with a pool house and dining pavilion, the open-air social groupings are wrapped in warm yellow tones that pop against cool greens and blues. “The outdoor space is a fun family area by day that, at night, can be transformed into a wonderful party space,” Miller says. “THIS WAS OUR FIRST FLORIDA PROJECT,” INTERIOR DESIGNER JESSE CARRIER SAYS. “AS A NEW YORK DESIGN FIRM, WE WERE EAGER FOR COLOR AND OUR CLIENTS WERE HAPPY TO USE THESE TROPICAL TONES THAT WE WOULDN’T NORMALLY SEE IN THE NORTHEAST.”
Step inside, where gleaming red oak flooring leads to the living room fashioned with a mix of periods. A French-inspired sofa, a stunning art deco cocktail table and mid-century Murano glass lamps, despite their difference in eras, work nicely together amidst the white walls, classic molding and the neutral raffia area rug that keeps the overall look fresh and modern. Largely two-toned, the dining room features monochromatic whites and creams that surround a massive period French table and black leather-clad chairs. Striking and bold, the contrast puts a modern twist on this traditional dining space. With walls wrapped in warm yellow, the colorful breakfast area sets a less formal vibe. In the family room beyond, lime-green sofas sit in bold contrast to the coral-colored chairs that surround the breakfast table. Just down the hallway, the master suite turns up the play with patterns and textures. With a dreamy color palette of foggy blue and mossy green, this space defines lux with its gold accents and uber-plush textiles. Vaulted ceilings, comfortable seating and a study make a grand statement in this romantic and peaceful place to wake up in, with the sun basking through French doors that open to the outside gardens. hen clients have worked with a designer for over 20 years, and she has come to
know their every fancy and whim, it’s no wonder they wanted her to help decorate their new vacation home. Enter architect and designer Karin Dorberth-Krauss, who designed the interior and furnished this residence in Naples, Fla. She designed their other homes in the U.S., too, but she only worked from her office in Germany. To proceed with this project, the owners
needed to put together a creative team that could accommodate both their American architectural preferences and their European design aesthetic. The clients set out in search of houses with the exterior styling they wanted. “They liked the style of architecture and curb appeal of some homes I had done with architect Jeff Harrell in Port Royal,” builder Joe Smallwood says. “It’s Naples’ premier waterfront community.” Upon commissioning Smallwood and Harrell, the design team set to creating and building the clients’ 7,400-square-foot home, without the builder or architect ever meeting the interior designer in person ... or even speaking to her because of the language barrier. They communicated through the homeowners who shared the designer’s point of view. “I came to

understand the clients’ wish for a clean Florida coastal home,” Harrell says. But instead of just a “drywall box,” they wanted detailing on walls and well-thought-out ceiling treatments. Approaching the front of the home, its classic British West Indies style is punctuated with a trio of custom mahogany French doors. The symmetrical white windows on the second floor give status to the glossy black-painted entry doors below. Custom ceiling treatments delineate the living room, where Selva GmbH furnishings from Italy make a contemporary statement. Architekin designed the custom black marble fireplace that sets off the homeowners’ Art Deco wall scones, while a stunning Swarovski chandelier draws the eye up and around the space. Glass pocket doors disappear to reveal the glorious outdoors.
“The clients wanted the house to have an airy feeling and be open to the views, but they still wanted the rooms to feel distinct. I did that with ceiling treatments,” says Harrell, who is known for his interior detailing. The architect also used detailing on the walls to make them appear thicker and more substantial than they really are in order to give the illusion of a European home with thick stone walls. The light color palette used throughout helps integrate the detailing into the interior design for a more contemporary look than might be otherwise expected. “Simple yet elegant Biedermeier-style furniture offers a mix of ‘upper east style’ with ‘manor home’ architecture,” the designer says. Much of it, including

the settee and lounge chairs in the living room, were custom-designed by Dorberth-Krauss and then crafted in Italy. The other furnishings were selected by the clients in Germany and shipped to the home. “While Americans tend to like their kitchens integrated into great rooms, these clients preferred to have the food preparation area feel separate yet united with the rest of the living spaces,” Dorberth-Krauss says. An elliptical arch and kitchen ceiling gently set the cooking area apart from the clean yet detailed dining room. “I like to balance curvature in a house with straight lines because it emphasizes both nicely,” says Harrell, who uses the ellipse as a signature to his architecture. Wall detailing begins in the foyer entry, where a sculpture niche adds a sense of depth to the walls. And in the master bedroom, a modicum of contemporary furnishings is juxtaposed with architectural details including ceiling and wall treatments, a wall of windows, an alcove, decorative classical columns and a cherry wood veneer wall. “The sum total is that this house is clean and contemporary, yet warm and inviting with its detailing and classic style ... it just feels good,” Harrell says.

PRIVATE JET DECOR
HAECO Private Jet Solutions transforms an ordinary jet cabin into a luxurious Asian-infused milieu.
T
hose who have the good fortune of globetrotting around the world might as well do so in style. HAECO Private Jet
Solutions is a Hong Kong-based cabin completion company that specializes in innovative solutions for jet interior design. Its “East Meets West” concept is flavored with classic, decorative “eastern” lattice patterns deployed in an otherwise modern, clean and chic “western” cabin setting. Bold use of color is evident in the pale green and matte gold hues of the furnishings, which provides both contrast and harmony with the prevailing neutral scheme. Unique features of the cabin include a sushi bar — treating flyers to a decadent experience at 39,000 feet. “East Meets West” offers flexibility, as it can be adapted for many aircraft types. Private Jet Solutions brings glamour and sophistication to air travel. The refined yet exotic look, infused with a touch of Asian heritage, is one of several design possibilities that allow the imagination to take flight.
